The Austrian-born Ms. Lamarr was no slouch in the brains department.  Though she was primarily known for her work as an actress as major as a major contract star of MGM’s “Golden Age,” Hedy Lamarr, (born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler) was also a scientist who co-invented an early form of spread spectrum communications technology, a key to modern wireless communication.  Avant garde composer George Antheil and Ms. Lamarr (under “Hedy Kiesler Markey”, her married name at the time) officially patented the idea on August 11, 1942, under U.S. Patent 2,292,387.

Ok, I was having lunch on campus yesterday with Dan when who should appear but some god-mocking, frequently guitar-twanging, big word using Psychology prof by the name of John V. who proceeded to complain that the old Thinking Shop has been featuring too many cats and not enough slinky babes of late.

John’s complaint seems to be based on the fact that I haven’t celebrated a carnival for a while. Well, it’s not my damn fault. Despite submitting a number of posts to the monthly Biblioblogger’s Carnival I didn’t get a look in for the October edition (which I’m not bitter about). And the same thing happened with the fortnightly Carnival of the Godless (which I am bitter about since the last edition had only about one third as many entries as usual). So, I wasn’t in a carnival mood so NOBODY got slinky carnival babe photos. SO HERE IS WHAT YOU DO.

For those who don’t know the story, one of the sons of Jacob ended up in Egypt slaving for a guy named Potiphar. Potiphar’s missus rather liked Joe and grabbed onto his robe. Joseph ran away in his birthday suit only to be arrested after the jilted Mrs. Potiphar accuses him of rape. In April of this year Chris Heard wondered who Potiphar was mad at (I bet it was the guy who first set him up with her…)

Ok, there are two of interest. The first was the girl who found baby Moses in a basket in the Nile and adopted him.  Matt Page at the Bible Film Blog had a post this past July on an 8 minute film from 1910 on the scene: Henri Andréani’s Moïse Sauvé des Eaux. I couldn’t find a still from the film, but I did find this:

Joan Collins in Land of the Pharaohs from 1955 is probably totally historically accurate. Found the pic at DoctorMacro.

The other Pharaoh’s daughter is Solomon’s wife. It should be a different daughter. Probably neither Moses or Solomon  existed, but they didn’t exist at rather different times. Couldn’t find any pictures of Mrs. Solomon, either. Here is a reasonable facsimile.

Dass die Verbreitung von neuen Technologien ganz entscheidend damit zusammenhängt, ob diese auch den Zugang zu Unbekleidetbildern erleichtern, darf man mittlerweile als Binsenweisheit betrachten.

Nach wie vor ungewöhnlich jedoch ist es, wenn eine Schauspielerin, die wesentliche Teile ihres Ruhmes einer textilfreien Rolle verdankt, auch noch als Erfinderin zur Telekommunikation, wie wir sie heute kennen, zu Ruhm und Ehren kommt. Und so feiert man am heutigen 9. November, dem Geburtstag von Hedy Lamarr, auch den Tag des Erfinders.

Die Geschichte der Wiener Schauspielerin verdient eigentlich selbst eine Verfilmung: 1933 erschütterte sie mit einer minutenlangen (!) Nacktszene im Film “Ekstase” (!!) die Welt bis hin zum Papst; nach der Flucht nach Hollywood 1938 drehte sie eine Reihe eher mäßiger Streifen, lieferte aber immerhin noch angeblich das optische Vorbild zur Disney-Trickfigur Aschenputtel.

Im Zweiten Weltkrieg kam sie zusammen mit dem Künstler George Anheil (mit dem sie angeblich Kontakt aufnahme, um sich über die Möglichkeiten einer Brustvergrößerung zu informieren) auf die Idee einer Torpedo-Fernsteuerung unter Verwendung von Frequenzsprüngen.

Das dafür erteilte Patent wurde zwar nie zu militärischen Zwecken verwendet; die darin beschriebene Frequenzsprungtechnik wird aber heute für Bluetooth und GSM verwendet.

Was ihr 1997 den Pioneer Award der Electronic Frontier Foundation bescherte und inzwischen auch den Tag der Erfinder, der in Europa an ihrem Geburtstag zelebriert wird. Davor lag noch eine Copyright-Klage gegen Corel: Anfang der 90er hatte man ihr  Bild ungefragt für die Verpackung von Corel Draw 8 verwendet.

Man. It’s been a while so I’ve got copious notes on shit I need to unleash on. Where to start?

In the spirit of getting myself readjusted to this blog at the proper rate, I’ll only offer this today.

A few weeks ago, comedian Louis CK went on The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien and, in a little over four minutes, explained the root of what’s wrong with most everything.

if you don’t know who Angelina Jolie is, well then, I’d have to check your earth’s citizenship status. she’s a beautiful, intelligent, outrageous actress (famous also for marrying another beautiful person and adopting many beautiful children) and also the goodwill ambassador for United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which for me, completely up her points on the sexy scale.

3. Che Guevara
What can be sexier than a revolutionary who is a doctor who is a poet who freed a nation, Cuba from oppression?  One person that my mother, my friends, artists and activists alike would all love (especially me)!! Well probably not my government but heck, you can’t please everyone. Unfortunately, he is no longer around. Che was executed by CIA-assisted Bolivian force on October 9, 1967 (aged 39).

4. Aung Sang Suu Kyi
Ok, sexy is probably not the right term to describe Daw Suu Kyi, the Nobel Peace Prize recipient of 1991 and elected Prime Mininister of Burma in 1990 whom were then put under house arrest by the Military Junta to this day. She is actually more regal than anything else, but damm, her courage and perseverance and revolution are amazingly inspiring loh!

Hedy Lamarr ran around naked on screen back in 1933, escaped from a powerful possessive husband, became a movie star in Hollywood and invented frequency-hopping, a technology ahead of it’s time that serves as a basis for modern spread-spectrum communication technology, such as COFDM used in WiFi network connections and CDMA used in some cordless and wireless telephones. So, I’m finally getting around to discussing this film, which I actually watched a couple of weeks ago. And, as expected, it did not disappoint!

Quick summary: The film revolves around two friends, “Big John” McMasters(Gable) and “Square John” Sand(Tracy), and their tumultuous adventures as dreaming and scheming wildcatters. The two oilmen continue to experience the ups and downs of the industry, when Sand’s sweetheart Elizabeth “Betsy” Bartlett(Colbert) comes into town. She becomes the ultimate test to the pair’s friendship, when she and McMasters fall for each other.

The rest of the film depicts the “make or break” reality of the industry, as the two friends struggle to realize their material desires. Their struggles are heightened when Sand finds out about McMaster’s extramarital relationship with a beautiful industry advisor Karen Vanmeer(Lamarr). In his eternal devotion to Betsy, Sand knocks some needed sense into his longtime friend and ultimately saves McMaster’s marriage.

I realize that I didn’t detail the plot too much, but I’d rather just simply state why this film was so likeable – pardon my laziness. I feel that the loyalty motif explored in the characters’ relationships with one another really defined the film. Sand and McMasters are always seeking each other out, despite their competitive natures toward each other. Sand does whatever it takes to make Betsy happy, who in turn stands by McMasters through it all. I guess you can say that this is exactly what the film tries to reason by the end: material fortune compares nothing to the true happiness of human bonds.

On a last note, I honestly bought this film to see some more Clark Gable yumminess, but instead ended up with a rejuvenated love for Spencer Tracy. My heart just broke for “Square John” throughout this film.

Kate Has always worked in oil paints, producing a whole array of differing images, based upon various subject matter. In her latest exhibition, however, she has chosen to pay homage to some of the glamorous female icons of ‘The Dream Machine’, the golden age of Hollywood. Kate’s paintings, executed in black and white, portray the crisply evocative images of the thirties, forties and fifties. Each image stares out from its own imprisoning canvas, isolated in a static timeless nostalgia. Her subjects are pictured as a series of ’stills’. Faithful to an era in which cinematic special effects were still unknown, and which the main source of light was placed high up in front of the subject, her idealised portraits display faces in which the shadows of the skin texture are smoothed away, and facial contours are exaggerated. This gives them the dual quality of being Sirens, both goddess like and ghostly.

Hollywood Gossip

THE SCRAMBLE for John Wayne is amusing.  Until he made “Stage Coach” he was lucky to get a job at Republic.  Since “Stage Coach” every producer in the business has asked for him in roles that require a typical Western hero.  His coming year is all mapped out.  He goes to Hal Roach for “Captain Cautious” by Kenneth Roberts, author of “Northwest Passage.”  But before Hal can borrow him he has to make a Walter Wanger picture and “Wagons Westward” for his home studio, Republic.  If possible, John Ford will be borrowed to direct him at Republic and if Ford accepts he will be the highest salaried director to ever set foot on this lot.

A LINE OR TWO:  Greer Garson and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer are having a friendly controversy.  MGM is trying to keep her in the old fashioned clothes that were so becoming in “Goodbye Mr. Chips.”  La Garson has different ideas and wants to wear some smartly turned out creations.  Can’t blame her.  She is such a beautiful woman and should have a chance to dress in modern attire . . . Dian Manners had a hectic weekend what with losing her purse with $100, being arrested for speeding and being held over in Salinas by an irate judge.

They know now at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer just how important Hedy Lamarr is since the fans expressed themselves in letters, postcards, etc., following “Lady of the Tropics.”  So Mervyn Leroy is bringing back William Anthony McGuire to build up her role in “The Ziegfeld Girl.”  She plays a Viennese beauty while Margaret Sullivan holds the drmatic spotlight.  The plan is to build each role equally so there will be no trouble with either star.  Sascha Guitry is expected in Hollywood the last of October.  Since he speaks no English it isn’t likely he will be cast as actor, writer or director as in France.  I am confident, however, his plays will be grabbed by the major studios.  His bride, his third or fourth wife, will accompany him.

SNAPSHOTS OF HOLLYWOOD COLLECTED AT RANDOM:  Orchestra Leader Charles Barnet, Dorothy Lamour’s much publicized heartbeat, arrives Wednesday to see Dorothea Kent, his real girl friend . . . . . Lana Turner and Greg Bautzer surprized Hollywood by appearing together at the Troc; Baby Sandy must have gotten under Mischa Auer’s skin for now he and his wife have adopted a girl; Richard Gully and Andy Lawler are in the Jack Warner party leaving early next month for Europe . . . . . very cute invitations sent out by Fannie Brice in Baby Snooks language for a cocktail party next Sunday . . . . . Ronald Colman returned from deep sea fishing without a marlin strike . . . . . Lillian Gish met Mary Pickford when she arrived at Pasadena.  Both of them were guests of Russell Birdwell later at a cocktail party.

OFF THE CUFF:  Secret ambition:  To see Spencer Tracy in a dual role stealing scenes from himself . . . . . A preview group gandering “The Wizard of Oz,” discovered that Bert Lahr is a bear in lion’s clothing.  What’s more, they agree he’s the hit of the show.

HOLLYWOOD—Glenn Ford may stay over in Europe for another movie for Irving Allen.  Irving wants him for the remake of “The White Hell of Pitz Palu.”  But now, by Johnson office decree, they have to remove that word after “white.” . . . Hedy Lamarr’s former beau, John Howard, painted a very good portrait of her recently, and then gave it to her.  Now Ginger Rogers and Teresa Wright have commissioned him to do theirs.  John’s heart throb nowadays is Rhonda McClean. . . . Joan Davis has two pictures to make at Columbia.  Her second will be the movie version of her radio show, “Leave it to Joan.”  She is now romping through “Traveling Saleswoman.” . . . Joan Crawford has the belle of the Mocambo for the opening there of dancers Marge and Gower Champion.  Joan wore a strapless blue number and danced all evening with Mel Ferber.  Other interesting twosomes:  Ann Sheridan with Bruce Cabot, Judy Garland with Vincente Minnelli.

Judy, incidentally, is getting a new wardrobe from her adoring but still-not-living-together husband.  When I spotted them at a local shop where Vincente was buying Judy the new “Breath of Spring” mink cape, he said “this is only the beginning.”

Jimmy Cagney will sing and dance and do another George M. Cohan act in “West Point Story.”  And singing and dancing with him are Doris Day and Gordon MacCrae.  Producer Lou Edelman takes his troupe to West Point in the fall for much of the filming.  Sounds like fun.

Bob Hope and Hedy Lamarr were the guests on the Lux Radio Theatre tonight in “The Bride Came C.O.D.” I read some time ago that Bob was Hedy’s favorite movie star. In fact C.B. deMille said tonight that when he asked Hedy who she wanted for a leading man she had turned down Clark Gable and insisted on Bob. And everyone knows how Bob feels about Hedy, so what a show that was! After the play was over Bob and Hedy talked for a while. Bob asked Hedy if she would go out with him New Year’s Eve. Hedy, “Why yes, I guess so, Bob. What have you passes for?”

Bob Hope and Rita Hayworth were on Lux Radio Theatre tonight after the play. They were given silver trophies for being the two most photogenerous stars. Not only that, but it was announced that Bob Hope and Hedy Lamarr would be guests on the Lux Radio Theatre in the play “The Bride Came C.O.D.”. Imagine! Hedda Hopper said today that Bing Crosby and Bob Hope are planning that benefit golf tour through Texas that they postponed ten months ago.

Hedy Lamarr (November 9, 1914 – January 19, 2000) was an Austrian-born American actress and scientist. Though known primarily for her acting (she was a major MGM contract star), she also co-invented an early form of spread spectrum communications technology, a key to modern wireless communication.^[1]
