Naniwa-no-miya Remains, with the NHK building and Osaka Museum of History in the background

Long before the city of Osaka existed, there was an imperial capital called Naniwa. It first served as the seat of the emperor and his grand palace in 645, and for the second time in 744 (capital cities tended to move regularly as new emperors took power). Thanks to its strategic location, Naniwa developed into an important seaport for trade and cultural exchange not only between different regions of Japan, but with Korea and China as well. Even after the first permanent capital was established in 710 in Heijo-kyo (modern-day Nara), and in 794 in Heian-kyo (modern-day Kyoto), Naniwa acted as the seaport for imported customs and traditions that Japan integrated with its own to form the civilization we know as Japanese.
Besides sea routes, Naniwa was the trading hub for overland routes, much as it remains today. Militant Buddhist influence was be strong here, centering on the Honganji sect, but would finally be violently crushed by Oda Nobunaga in the late 16th century, and in the 17th century Toyotomi Hideyoshi would establish the great merchant’s capital of Osaka.
The name “Naniwa” remains in place names, such as Naniwa-ku (Naniwa Ward), Naniwa-bashi (a bridge on Nakanoshima island), Namba (the famous entertainment district, whose name is a modern reading of the same kanji characters (難波) for Naniwa).
Naniwa-no-miya, which was built two times on two different sites, was one of the grandest palaces in ancient Japan, and when its role as the imperial government center had ended, it served as a diplomatic meeting and lodging place for high-ranking overseas dignitaries visiting Japan. Only a small portion of Naniwa-no-miya remains, which can be seen in a small park adjacent to Osaka Castle Park. Next to the ruins is the Osaka Museum of History, which is the best museum in Osaka and one of the most enjoyable museums I have visited period. It is not only informative but engrossing, as it appeals not just to history buffs but average people who may not know anything about Osaka’s deep history. Additionally, you can enjoy a spectacular bird’s-eye view of the grounds of Osaka Castle and the Naniwa-no-miya remains from the tenth floor of this building. Both of these can be accessed from Tanimachi 4-chome Station (Chuo and Tanimachi Subway Lines).

Yo!

had to return some of my library books today. couldn’t finish the greek/roman necromancy book

had to return some of my library books today. couldn’t finish the greek/roman necromancy book in time, so just ended up renewing it. returned soseki’s “ten nights’ dreams” which i read very quickly. the story about the lady who asked her lover to dig her grave with a clam shell and subsequently blossoms as a flower a hundred years later is the one that is most memorable. also returned an anthology of saibara songs. i didn’t end up doing much with the book. that’ll have to be something to check out again in the future.

today i was on a mission to find if the library had any of the books referenced in the ‘heian superstitions…” book that i read earlier. they had some in english translation, some only in japanese and others i couldn’t find at all. of course, in the process of searching for those books, i inevitably came across many other interesting books in the stacks. i checked out seven to peruse for this month. one of them i happened on quite accidentally and is a picture book of different types of japanese ghosts. it’s amusingly creepy (for example the upside down giant woman head walking on its long hair). i’m going to have to break out the dictionaries for this one because it’s completely in japanese!other books i found were ‘tales from uji,’ ‘myths and legends of japan,’ ‘eccentric spaces; hidden histories,’ ‘japanese grotesqueries,’ ‘ghosts and the japanese,’ and ‘japanese rainmaking.’

the weather today was fantastic. high in the low 70s and low of 50. soooo perfect! there’s something about the turning from late summer to early autumn that makes me feel positive and energetic. i feel the briskness in the air and can’t help but smile. while strolling about in the leafy wash of myriad of green colors, i was listening to bark psychosis’ album ‘hex.’ i kept repeating track one (the loom) although track three (absent friend) was also a nice complement to my nature walk.

vegged out most of the rest of the day watching penn and teller bullshit and rifftrax of the 5th element. it was a silly night overall ^__^

i guess i shouldn’t be complaining too much since it only took about two weeks to apply, interview, and be offered this job, but i’m still extremely relieved. there’s nothing like a bad economy and wanting to have a full-time job that *only* lasts until march to make employers throw applications like mine in the circular file. i really lucked out with this job in that their present secretary will be going on maternity leave for roughly the same time that i need work here. one cover letter expressing this later and i’ve become the best fit candidate for the position. YAY <3

i’ve been enjoying my time here even while unemployed, too, as i managed to get a university library card (maybe because of my alumni status) and have been reading, reading, reading. after reading royall tyler’s lengthy ‘tale of genji’ fiction this summer, i was pretty curious about heian life and have been reading some non-fiction related to customs, mythology, and magic practices during that time period. interesting stuff.

friends stopped here for a few days as part of their lengthy roadtrip and we had a really fun time hanging out yesterday. i played the part of the tour guide and showed them a thousand different things around campus. all of us were sore and sunburned by the end of the day. i guess five hours non-stop will do that. still…it *was* wonderfully fun.

other than that, been drawing a lot. found some discount paper at the art shop and have just been doodling away whenever i’m bored. i wouldn’t say anything’s a great work of art, but it’s really fun drawing random stuff and i seem to be developing random characters that keep reappearing based on different aspects of my/friends/fictional characters personalities. i started giving them names like ame onna (雨女), yuki otoko (雪男), etc…they’re very random.

For the past week or so I’ve promised various people that I would be posting additional Spring ‘10 Trip Information, including pricing and trip package details, “withing the next day or two”. I’m talking about the group trips here: the ~ 2-week “Cherry Blossom Spring“ and the ~ 1-week “Kyoto Sojourn“ trips. General itineraries for each are, in fact, up (see top of this page) and anyone who’s emailed me with any questions, including pricing, has received a prompt response. At any rate, I’m still not quite ready to publish all that to the world at large, but almost there. I will have that information up before the end of THIS week. Promise. Ishi no ue ni mo san nen.

Kotowaza are Japanese proverbs, “wise sayings”. I use one just above: Ishi no ue ni mo san nen. The literal translation is “Sit on a rock for 3 years”. Loses something between the Japanese and the English, indeed. It means: “Have patience. Patience. Patience…” I think of this one a lot.

Other favorite kotowaza of mine, which can sum-up an emotion, nail a situation, or remind me of an attitude or outlook I need to adopt — and to which I posit you can, or will, relate — include:

* Baka ni tsukeru kusuri wa nai. There’s no medicine for (to cure) a fool.

A tree that’s grown up in the wind has strong roots.

* Chi mo namida mo nai. [S/he has] neither blood nor tears.

* Heh o hitte shiri tsubome. [No use] scrunching-up your bum after the fart.

* Saru mo ki kara ochiru. Even monkeys fall from trees.

I’ll leave it to you to figure out their respective “inner meaning”, though I believe each is rather obvious. If you want to guess or have a question, please feel free to comment below. I’ll be incorporating these and others into one of my stories — it’s a work in progress.

. . .

Taikai no itteki . . . Just one drop in the ocean. Only a moment in time. C’est la vie . . . C’est la Soul Sonic Boogie.

Aplikasjoner for pin’an ni’dan og pyung’ahn cho’dan

På bildene: Hans Erik Hornell og Torkild Hausken. Fotograf: Wendolie Berrospi.

Hva betyr egentlig gedan’barai?

Heian Nidan – JKF

I had traveled to Kawasaki, about 30 minutes by train from Tokyo, to attend the Kanamara Festival, but ended up first in the Kawasaki Daishi (Heikenji Temple), instead of the Kanamara Shrine. Clearly, I am quite ignorant and can’t tell the difference between a Buddhist temple and a Shinto shrine – fail!

On the way to the temple, just outside the main gate, you will find a colorful street with stores selling food, snacks, souvenirs, trinkets, daruma dolls, etc.

Kawasaki Daishi is the center of worship for devoted followers and spreading the teachings of the Buddhist priest Kukai (774-835), also well known by his posthumous name, Kobo Daishi, which means “the great master who spread the Buddhist teachings”. During the Heian era, Kobo Daishi introduced Shingon Buddhism to Japan, and is still considered the founder of these teachings in Japan.

The Dai-Sanmon (Main Gate) gate was built in November 1977 to commemorate the 850th anniversary of the founding of the Kawasaki Daishi. On the gate rest images of Yakushi Nyorai (The Medicine Master Buddha) and the Four Heavenly Kings.

The Statue of Prayer and Peace was erected to commemorate the 1,150th anniversary of Kobo Daishi’s death and with the Displaying of the Image Festival, held on October 7, 1984.

Hakkaku Gojunoto (Octagonal Five-Storied Pagoda, Restoration Pagoda) was completed in the same year (1984). This five-storied pagoda is built in a simple and solemn octagon in compliance with the form of the Shingon School. An octagon is a building form which is akin to the circle, symbolizing broad-mindedness and wholeness. There is also an analogy with devotion to Buddhism through Shakamuni’s teaching of the “Eight Right Ways”.

The Dai-Hondo main hall was destroyed by fire during the war in April 1945 and rebuilt in May 1958. Constructed of steel and concrete, it is a splendid cathedral of the Showa period with an architectural style of the Heian period.

In the temple grounds, you will also find the Crane Pond and the Prayer Hall for Safe Driving (really!?).

Last week I posted a bunkai for Heian Shodan, the most distinctive part of which is the interpretation of most of the moves in the kata as hair-pulling. I promised a couple of more details. It turns out that hair-pulling is not just a grab-a-random-fistful-and-jerk sort of proposition. Here’s how you do it…

Grab hair at the temple if possible – it hurts far more there than other parts of the head.

Twist – don’t pull. It hurts far, far worse! Try it on yourself. Grab a fistful of your own hair at the temple and compare the misery of twisting vs. pulling. Now, for some relief, try it on the top of your head.

Notice that the down-blocks in Heian Shodan start high and across the body and they involve a pulling motion, bending the elbow as your fist approaches your center. Then the fist twists and the arm locks out into the down-block position. Turns out this is the perfect way to pull hair in a fight.

.

Grab, pull toward your chest, twist, push down, and hold.

.

That’s a recipe for a great offbalance and distraction.

( artikkelen i Aftenposten )

Morgendagen står i globaliseringens navn.

I’ve gotta get some video capability for this blog – a short video would do a lot to facilitate posts like this, but alas, recession etc… Anyway, I promised this past week a post on Heian Shodan as the Fine Art of Hair-Pulling. I’m not claiming to have the official answer to the age-old question of what do the weird moves in Heian mean, but I have an answer and a pretty good one too.

.

Kata says: Chamber a left low block high near your right ear, turn left 90 degrees, low block, then step forward with a right lunge punch.

Bunkai: Opponent agresses from the front, you sidestep either way, putting your hands up between you and him. Grab hair with either hand, try to position yourself beside uke (optimally at 90 degrees), pull the hair with a twisting motion toward you then lock your arm out in a down-block position. If there is no hair to grab or you can’t get to it, grab clothes or arm or face and do the same move. This may be combined with or followed up by a punch or push from the free hand.

Kata: Chamber right low block near your left ear, turn right 180 degrees, low block, pull back into a vertical hammerfist, step forward into a left lunge punch.

Bunkai: The previous hair pull and lunging punch/push failed to down the opponent. Grab hair/clothes/etc… with right hand and pull down at 90 to 180 degrees from his strong line. During this scuffle, if he manages to grab the arm you are grabbing him with, do a release #1 or #4 from aikido (depending on which arm he grabs with), countergrab his arm and twist it, then punch or push with the left arm.

Kata: turn left 90 degrees, left low block, left rising block. Right rising block. left rising block. right rising block

Bunkai: the left low block is a repetition of the pulldown one way and if it fails pull down the other way. The rising blocks are alternately grabbing hair, twisting as you pull down, and rising forearm smash into the jawline.

Kata: turn left 270 degrees into left front stance, left low block. right lunge punch

Bunkai: the left turn executed from the preceeding high block position is a leg throw, similar to taiotoshi in judo. This can be accompanied by or followed with a punch or push with the free hand.

Kata: repeat the low-block, lunge punch sequence on the other side and then back down the center line of the embusen.

Bunkai: repetition of the preceeding pull-downs.

Kata: four shuto block/strikes at 90 degrees and 45 degrees to the starting position.

Bunkai: opponent aggresses from the front. grab arm and hold down with one hand, try to position yourself at 45 or 90 degrees to the opponent to expose head/neck targets, and strike with the free hand.

So, you have a limited, but very useful set of skills in Heian Shodan…

grab hair, pull head down, and punch/push

if that doesn’t work, try it on the other side

if he grabs your arm while you are doing this pulldown, release, countergrab, and punch/push

if you need to up the severity of your response, grab hair and jawjack him with the free forearm.

while you’re trying that you might get an opportunity to turn into a leg throw

or you might just cover his hands and shuto with the free hand.

Stay tuned for a little more detailed look at that hair-pulling action!

This is another case of something nice passing right below my nose and not seeing it. I am not really interested in tables so it makes sense to me I wouldn’t notice it but when I photographed it I really noticed for the first time the detail and quality of craft.

The legs are shaped after birds legs and are called sagi ashi in Japanese. The sagi is Japanese for heron. There is shell inlay detail. The surface of the top is cracked and gives the impression of being very old and crackled. It is in fact a device employed during the making of the table. There is a type of mesh that shrinks less than the lacquer embedded in the table so when the lacquer dries and shrinks it will give the impression of an old cracked surface. It is a Taisho, early 20th. century, reproduction of a Heian period piece. The Heian period ended roughly 850 years ago. The picture of the table in the book is of a Muromachi period table of the same type.

The story behind this table will show you how small the antiques world is. The dealer where I photographed the table is selling it for the second time. It was originally bought by three Osaka based dealers who paid 1,000 yen, what was then the price of constructing a new house. They then found out it was a reproduction and sold it to the dealer where I photographed it, albeit for a lot more than 1,000 yen. He then sold it and bought it back at the Wakakusa auction last week for a very good price.

Today is Hinamatsuri or Dolls Day (aka Girls Day). Hina means “doll” and matsuri means “festival” by the way. It’s always on the 3rd day of the 3rd month. In Japanese households you may see exquisite dolls representing the Emperor and Empress and their court on a red stair-like display. They’re all dressed in the traditional dress of Heian period.

I was lucky enough to have part of the display (just the emperor and empress, 2 lanterns and few other items) and my mom and I would put it up in February all the way until Hinamatsuri. For any boys out there, there is also a Boys’ Day on May 5th (i.e. the 5th day of the 5th month) so don’t feel left out.

I’m not sure why but they tend to refer to both Girls’ and Boys’ Day as Children’s Day now. When I was young they didn’t do that. Maybe they didn’t want to make one gender feel left out on either day.

Anyways, here are some pictures of Hello Kitty representing Hinamatsuri.

This is a Heian period Ko Tokoname vase. For more on the Heian period click here, here, or here. The vases with 3 incised rings are called sankinko. There are also vases with 2 rings, one ring and no ring. How many rings is an indicator of age. There is also a connection to Bhuddist telling of the future in the rings. On this particular point I am unclear. If you search “sankinko” most references point to the Bhuddist aspects of it. If you count from the space above the top ring as one, the next, between the top and second ring as two, the next between the bottom and middle as three, the space below the bottom as four and the foot area, that is to pick up the vase and look at the foot and count it as five you will have the corresponding areas mentioned in the fortune telling references. The Japanese words that correspond to the different areas are 1)= chi, earth, 2)=mizu, water, 3)=hi, fire, 4)=kaze, wind, 5)=sora, sky. These are not in the order from top to bottom, that is to say #5, the foot of the vase isn’t sora, sky. I am unsure of this aspect.

These vases have an interesting aspect to them. They went through a period of being shunned when it was discovered some of them were used as cremation urns. The vases used for that purpose have holes in them, to drain liquids, again, a point I am unclear on. I don’t understand what the liquid would be that needed to be drained. People selling antiques then started to repair the holes and sell the vases. The point being there are a lot of these vases around with holes that have been repaired. They are worth less than one with out a hole or one that hasn’t been repaired.

Now, as a side note. In my village, which is off the beaten track, the bodies aren’t cremated. They are buried. This is a fact I found out about after asking why the candles that line the path from the deceased person’s house to the cemetary wern’t lit. If the body is buried the candles are left unlit. If the body is cremated they are. My lay understanding is the spirit uses the candle light as a guide.

The last three pictures are of the main auction I attend every month. The pictures are from a local magazine, Naranto is the name. The dealers would have a collective heart attack were I to whip out a camera. They are very sensitive to things they are selling being photographed, a fact I found out the first time I attended the auction and started to take out my camera.

The photos show the auction taking place in the alternative venue. It happens there on weekends and holidays as the main room isn’t available during these times. I prefer the alternative venue as the catered lunch is seafood based. At the main place, in a hotel ballroom, the catered lunch is meat curry with rice. I don’t eat meat so I end up lunching on sweet bean paste rolls. Not the best to keep your mind alert. The photo shows the inner circle of bidders. I usually pace around the outside looking at the baskets as they pass. In one of the photos there are a number of large Imari chargers about to go up on the block.

To get into this auction group you need to be accepted into a sub- group, the minimum size of a sub- group being 3 with some of the groups having 10 or more members. The group is mainly for insurance. You join and make a commitment to guarantee the purchases made by everyone in the group. If one of the group doesn’t pay their bill for purchases everyone else is responsible. A product of this set up is groups tend to shill bid for the members in their group, withdrawing from the bidding when the person selling the item has hit the price they want. The antidote to this is to not let yourself be pushed up by members of the persons group, difficult for me as I don’t know who is who.

Following is a good video of the first movements of Heian Yondan. This movement seems superficially

Following is a good video of the first movements of Heian Yondan. This movement seems superficially to be kinda dumb, but if you look a little deeper you can see it as the basis of a whole lot of very fine self defense technique. In this video, tori demonstrates these moves as:

a wedge-like block similar to the ‘cowcatcher’ that we teach at Mokuren.

an iriminage-like clothesline throw with a great hip bump as insurance

shomenate throwing the attacker straight down his weak stance line.

a groin strike (notice how the off-hand follows to stay in the center of the relationship)

a gedanate-like throw

a pick-up type scooping throw

a kubiguruma-like throw

a form of oshitaoshi (ikkyo)

It seems as if the first move of Heian Yondan could be one of those universally-applicable techniques.

.

Sure, there’s something missing in trying to learn these types of applications in a solo form – these things will pretty much be impossible to develop without doing a good bit of partner practice. But on the other hand, the jujitsu guys that practice these same ideas in partner kata all the time are missing something too – the ability to train these things (at least to some degree) solo.
