<title><![CDATA[Definitely circling the hypo-waters.]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Well, there is some legitimate stress in my life right now, but I&#8217;m going to attribute the excruciating headaches, sensitivity to comments/situations, and dry skin to becoming hypothyroid&#8230; which I am not happy about at all.  I don&#8217;t mean to be harsh, but I feel like shit and I&#8217;m quite down.  I found myself breaking down today on multiple occasions about nothing particular and my forehead is just unbelievably painful to the touch!</p>
<p>Anyway, I&#8217;m going to do a small Thyranksgiving post to sum up my thyroid afflicted holiday this year:</p>
<p>For the first time since I moved to Germany I had thanksgiving with my family&#8230; this occasion was groundbreaking in many ways&#8211; first, my family truly tried to accommodate the vegetarians (myself included) which made for probably the most food options at a family gathering able to be eaten by myself in YEARS&#8230; perhaps even since I became vegetarian (and that&#8217;s about 8 years back!)!  Secondly, it was the first time I had seen my father&#8217;s aunt and her family since my cancer diagnosis, which became extremely apparent after looking at my now 17 year old cousin, H, and him gasping at the gash across my neck (something I haven&#8217;t really taken notice of as &#8220;gasp worthy&#8221; since the steri-strips were removed and one no longer saw old caked on blood!).  He asked me what happened and I thought to myself, go figure, it&#8217;s been left up to me to break the news to all of my little cousins!  As I started to explain that I had thyroid cancer and that&#8217;s where the thyroid gland goes and what not he nodded his head and, in his very teenagery way managed something like a &#8220;oh right, I remember&#8221;.  Third groundbreaking moment was the whole evening going by without discussing my condition at all (with the exception of H&#8217;s reaction and conversation).  Fourth groundbreaking moment is that my uncle&#8217;s mother died on thanksgiving evening, which sort of brought a solemn, grave tone to the holiday.</p>
<p>In other news, I am moving along in my finishing up in the USA process in that I have purchased the gifts I needed to for my return to Heidelberg, and managed most things remotely from the USA for Heidelberg.  I hope things come together!</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Vielen Menschen fällt zu Mannheim gleich folgender Satz ein, den sogar die HP meiner Fakultät so oder leicht abgewandelt propagiert: &#8220;Man weint zweimal wegen Mannheim. Einmal, wenn man dort hinzieht und ein weiteres mal, wenn man denn wieder wegzieht.&#8221; Hm.</p>
<p>Ich habe komischerweise noch nicht geweint, obgleich ich jetzt über fünf Jahre hier lebe &#8230;. und ich bin mir ziemlich sicher, daß ich es auch nicht tun werde, wenn ich denn erstmal das Weite suche. Ich war lange Zeit vor meiner Niederkunft in Mannheim mit einem Mädchen aus der Kurpfalz liiert &#8230; dementsprechend war ich auch sozusagen ein bißchen zwangsgebunden an die Region selbst. Diese &#8220;Geiselhaft&#8221; löste sich direkt am ersten Tag auf, an dem ich meiner Freundin einen Besuch abstattete und auf sie wartete, bis sie Dienstsschluß hatte &#8230; um 6 Uhr morgens. Ich war bereits mit einem Zug am Vorabend gekommen und hatte mir die Zeit zu vertreiben. Komischerweise war es tatsächlich der Silvesterabend. Und ich zog durch die Straßen. Ich erwartete nicht viel &#8230; aber bekam alles. Sofort wurde ich von ein paar jungen Typen aufgegriffen, die mir bereitwillig ein Bier abgaben und mich auch ansonsten recht gut unterhielten. Mit ihnen ging es rechtzeitig zur Stunde Null auf die Alte Brücke Heidelbergs. Ich bekam keine Chance abzulehnen. Und neben diesen Saufkumpanen lernte ich ungefähr weitere 10000 Leute kennen. Abzüglich der fotomanischen Asiaten fast alles Kurpfälzer.</p>

<p>It’s Friday night and the Christmas events are in full swing in Germany.  Luckily, if you feel the need to escape the noise and stress of the holiday season, you can escape to a quiet, pleasant restaurant off the main street in Heidelberg.</p>

<p>Being inside the Schnitzelbank restaurant, you get an eerie feeling as if you are sitting in a secret underground hideout dating back to historic times.  Vintage photographs and drawings adorn the walls around.  The aged, wooden tables are so worn out from countless uses that you can only wonder which famous historic figures have set foot here.  People’s names, initials, and lover’s heart shapes from years past are deeply engraved into the benches (hence the name ‘Schnitzelbank’: <em>Schnitzel</em> meaning carve and <em>bank</em> meaning bench).  Even the method of transferring food from the kitchen to the dining area is old-fashioned – there is a dumbwaiter used to convey dishes from the bottom floor to the ground level.  It’s certainly a unique dining experience here. </p>
<p>The menu is elegantly presented in a large, brown folder.  There are numerous dishes to choose, including traditional favorites and regional fare.  A wide variety of wines are also available.</p>

<p>Order the 13,90 € Schnitzel “Art des Hauses” (House Special Schnitzel) and you get a fresh salad, home-made Spätzle, and two pieces of fine pork cutlets.  Instead of Spätzle, it is possible to request fried potatoes (Bratkartoffeln).</p>
<p>First, the accompanying salad – large whole leaves of red leaf lettuce, shredded carrots, chopped red cabbage, a slice of cucumber, and a tomato wedge – comes completely drenched in a salty vinaigrette.  Not what I was expecting.  Although all of the ingredients are fresh, the dressing utterly annihilates the natural flavor of the individual components.  One bite and I find myself reaching for my drink.</p>

<p>This aggressiveness continues on in the main dish.  The schnitzel is consumed by mounds of sliced button mushrooms and dark, aromatic cream sauce.  When the plate comes to the table, you are left searching for the meat.  Also unexpected is the lack of breadcrumbs on the schnitzel.  With the intense flavor of the cream sauce, however, it makes sense that the pork isn’t breaded.  The meat is cooked well and seasoned properly, although it can be a chore to cut through at times.  The mushrooms add a flavor and texture to the dish that complements the schnitzel rather well.  Overall, however, the dish lacks focus.  Piling on the mushrooms isn’t exactly a good thing.  You will be left wondering, “Am I eating mushrooms with schnitzel or schnitzel with mushrooms?”</p>
<p>One bright spot is the fried potatoes.  They are buttery and crisp, browned to perfection.  There are also hints of grilled onions mixed in with the spuds, providing an added sweetness.  These potatoes are absolutely delicious and worth the substitution!</p>
<p>As a wine bar that boasts having a lot of history, Schnitzelbank could do better.  As a restaurant, it still has lots of room for improvement.  For now, it would be best to leave the schnitzel in the bank and invest elsewhere.</p>

<p>If you don&#8217;t know much about Isabella Beeton, besides that she put together a rather weighty niche book, what image leaps to mind when you try to guess what she was like in real life?</p>
<p>a)  A bosomly matron</p>
<p>b) A sweet old dear</p>
<p>c) A bossy housewife who thought she knew it all</p>
<p>d) All of the above</p>
<p>As you probably guessed from the oh-so-cleverly leading examples, none of the above.  <em></em></p>
<p><em>Household Management</em> flickered into volume-by-volume existence in 1861 &#8211; although Isabella wrote excerpts for the <em>Englishwoman&#8217;s Domestic Magazine</em> from 1857, when she was no more than 21.  Already by that point she was a wife, running a home and working as a journalist.  When I was 21, my time was invested in obsessing over some guy I was desperate to marry and squeeze 5 kids out of (What was his name again?).  I hadn&#8217;t much of a clue about budgeting or housework.  Certainly, anything beyond Vegetable Pasties and (frequently-burnt) biscuits would have had me reaching for a bottle of wine.</p>
<p>Yet by 25, Isabella&#8217;s book had been published (after a 4-year slog, amongst everything else the poor girl had on her plate) and she was well on her way to becoming &#8211; literally &#8211; a household name.</p>
<p>Despite her age, her life experiences seeped into her book in one way or another.  So, if I&#8217;m going to spend 365 days in her shoes, I figure I should have more than just a superficial knowledge of what made her tick.</p>
<p>One experience already connects us:  she finished her schooling in a historic town not so far from where I currently live &#8211; Heidelberg.</p>

<p>Isabella would probably be completely at home there, even today.  Heidelberg Castle remains mostly an enigmatic, majestic ruin.  A toppled gunpowdered tower here, brick-maker&#8217;s stamps  in the moat wall there, the bakeries, the main street, the vineyard-packed hills and market square all retain their familiarity and centrality to the town&#8217;s pulse.</p>

<p>It was probably here that she picked up her recipe for <em>Dampfnudeln</em> (a literal translation is &#8217;steamed noodles&#8217;, but in actual fact it&#8217;s a steamed bun with a crispy little bottom).</p>
<p>One of my colleagues, with glistening eyes and a dreamy smile transporting him back to his Oma&#8217;s kitchen as he spoke, told me that they&#8217;re not as easy to make as her recipe in theory implies.  His grandmother&#8217;s mouthwateringly enticing <em>Dampfnudeln</em> were produced in a special pan and required a certain knack to get them right.</p>
<p>On Saturday I plan to recreate Isabella&#8217;s recipe and compare it to the <em>Dampfnudeln</em> available in 21st century Germany.  She may have adulterated it for the middle-class Victorian kitchen.  Or perhaps she just decided to simply let them have it with the original.  I&#8217;ll soon find out.</p>

<p>However, I hope that my boyfriend will be the proverbial canary in the mine when the time comes to test them&#8230;</p>

<p>“Are you okay with the music?” asked the lone Syrian worker behind the counter as Arabic tunes echoed throughout the restaurant.  I nodded in approval as I enjoyed a sip of Arabic tea and a bite of my falafel wrap.  This is the scene at Falafel restaurant, where the ambiance is casual and the food is remarkable.</p>

<p>The menu board here is relatively small, which is not a bad thing at all.  You can choose an assortment of items to be stuffed in flatbread (mit Brot) or different types of entrées on plates (auf Teller).  They also have various salads and a few dessert items.  Drinks are rather inexpensive.  However, what makes this place unique is the free hot Arabic tea.  That’s right.  I said free!  There is a small table in the corner with glass cups, a large tea kettle, and sugar cubes to sweeten your drink as desired.  The tea is unusually addicting.</p>

<p>Falafels here at Falafel are, as expected, fantastic.  Although I have only eaten falafel once before, I was completely blown away by the taste and texture of the spiced chickpeas here. </p>

<p>At 3,70 €, the Falafel with Halloumi cheese in flatbread is a definite hit.  Upon placing your order, the falafel is scooped into balls and deep fried.  Sticks of halloumi cheese, which has a high smoking point, are also put into the deep fryer.  Next, the cook smears red tomato sauce on a soft, thin sheet of flatbread, adds the falafel balls, presses down to spread them out, places a couple of tomato slices and a handful of shredded lettuce inside, scoops a generous amount of Tzatziki sauce on top, sprinkles some chopped parsley on top, folds the bread over like a wrap, and then places it inside a sandwich press.  The end result is a falafel sandwich wrap with eye catching grill marks. </p>

<p>The combination of falafel, halloumi cheese, assorted vegetables, and yogurt sauce is undeniably delicious.  The wrap is reminiscent of a burrito – the falafel acts like ground beef, the red sauce spicy resembling salsa, cheese adding a flavor boost, and the vegetables granting a crunchy consistency.  Unlike ground beef, however, the falafel has a crunchy texture and a distinctive flavor that had my taste buds dancing in excitement.   </p>

<p>Order the 4,70 € chicken breast plate and you get a platter with a small portion of salad, Tzatziki sauce, hummus, chunks of tender chicken breast, and a thin piece of flatbread.  The salad consists of sliced carrots, thinly sliced cucumbers, chopped tomatoes, shredded lettuce, and green onions with scattered pepper flakes, all tossed in a vinaigrette.  In terms of taste, there isn’t anything special about it.  The hummus with olive oil is decent.  Unfortunately, the cook was a bit too aggressive in sprinkling the cumin on top.  The chicken breast – tender and bursting with juice – is terrific, although you only get about twelve small chunks.  You only get one piece of bread, so you end up with an excess of dips without anything to eat it with.  How sad.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, Falafel restaurant definitely serves up some of the best falafels in Heidelberg.  Add in a cozy atmosphere, fresh ingredients, reasonable prices, and free tea and you have a winner in the heart of the Heidelberg Altstadt.  It’s a nice alternative to the Döner Kebabs in Germany.</p>

<p>Falafel, located at the corner of Heugasse and Merianstraße in front of a large church, is an Arabic restaurant specializing in, you guessed it, falafel.  The prices here are extremely affordable.  Free tea!</p>

<title><![CDATA[My Filipino-inspired Birthday Lunch (4 months overdue)]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p style="text-align:justify;">It has been some time since I posted something here, so apologies to my friends who&#8217;ve been expecting something from me for a while. Anyway, the <a href="http://phoodjournal.wordpress.com/2009/07/25/geburtstag-mittagessen-pinoy-comfort-food-served-in-a-finer-way/" target="_blank">last time</a> I wrote something, I gave the lunch menu for my 25th birthday.  It looked daunting when I first planned it, but I was ecstatic to actually have pulled it off.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">My concept was a Filipino tasting menu since I always had difficulty explaining Philippine cuisine to my friends. The best definition I could give them was &#8220;Think Southeast Asian, but not too spicy and with Chinese and Spanish influences.&#8221; That only puzzles them further.  (I knew I should have brought Ma&#8217;s copy of the <a href="http://www.kulinarya.net/" target="_blank">Kulinarya</a> cookbook with me.)</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">I spent a week planning my menu and got everything I needed from the Tiger and Dragon Food Store which had a really impressive collection of Asian ingredients.  Every Filipino ingredient I could think of was there.  Note that in the latter dishes I will mention, everything was prepared from scratch. Yes, they even had fresh pandan leaves, powdered ube root, and coconut milk!</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">I did the meal twice: the first time for my PhD student friends, and the second time for my research group.  So that it would be easy for me, I made sure there were no more than seven guests at a time.  Also I thought it would be more practical (ie. cheaper) and impressive to just serve the food in portions and course by course.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">The first time I did it, one of my guests came a few minutes early and watched me in the kitchen.  I was preparing the lumpia (Philippine spring rolls) when she arrived and she was excited to learn how to prepare the peanut sauce served with it. What really made me happy was how she thought that I looked professional and asked if I studied cooking somewhere. I told her I never took formal lessons, but I&#8217;ve helped out my mom in the kitchen since I was a little kid and I enjoyed reading cookbooks, watching cooking shows &#38; competitions, and eating in all kinds of restaurants.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">She then complimented my chopping skills, which I was thankful for again. You see, as a birthday present to myself, I had bought a professional <a href="http://www.wuesthof.de/en/le_cordon_bleu-knife-collections.asp">Wüsthof</a> chef&#8217;s knife before I even secured all the ingredients just so I would have a more fun prep period.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">I had to serve this in small bites since I just wanted an appetizer.  <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sisig" target="_blank">Sisig </a>is usually prepared with boiled and grilled pork (pig face to be exact), but I used tofu for easy prep and a healtier alternative.  As an amuse, it was good that the sisig packed a punch with the salt and spices.  Since I couldn&#8217;t find quail eggs the day before, I decided to just drizzle heated egg yolk and cook the egg white with the sisig.  The &#8220;pork rind&#8221; was a cheap German snack which looked like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicharr%C3%B3n" target="_blank">chicharon</a>, but tasted like a Philippine snack called Fritos Ring. Really nice alternative since real pork rind was expensive and sold only in large bags.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">I thought of pairing the sisig with SMB (<a href="http://www.sanmiguel.com.ph/" target="_blank">San Miguel Beer</a>) for them to taste the most famous beer in the Philippines.  However, since SMB was expensive (about 3x as expensive as German beers), I decided to do shots of it. Most of them really liked the lightness and fruity tones of SMB. One of them who didn&#8217;t drink beer a lot really liked it as well.  An Indian friend commented that I should just cook this dish and we should have a beer party with it. Great suggestion. I mean the Germans love grilled food, pork, onions, vinegar, and beer. Why wouldn&#8217;t they love <em>sisig</em>, right?</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">For the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lumpia" target="_blank">lumpia</a>, I originally wanted to use ubod / hearts of palm, but the only available ones were canned and really expensive. I decided to just use carrots, togue/mungbean sprouts, and preserved bamboo shoots. It turned out to be really tasty, especially with the sweet-salty peanut garlic sauce. Since I wanted it to look pretty as well, I made the lumpia wrapper into a net instead of a plain crepe. Got great reviews on the taste and presentation of this one. Some of them couldn&#8217;t stop eating the sauce!</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Since it&#8217;s tradition to eat <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pancit" target="_blank">pansit</a> on one&#8217;s birthday (for long life), I decided to have this as the prelude to the main course.  I used dried pancit canton, various fresh veggies, and an oyster-based sauce for this. This was the only dish I cooked from scratch on the actual party day. Got the kropek from my favorite Chinese restaurant in Bismarckplatz.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">The adobo was the star of the lunch. Everyone kept raving about it. I prepared it the night before and let the meat absorb the oil and sauce. Then, just before serving it, I seared the skin to almost crisp and drizzled the sauce on it on the serving platter.  The kaldereta was stewed for three hours the day before as well. It cooked for so long that the lamb cubes just melted in one&#8217;s mouth.  The meat dishes went well with the red wine that my roommate bought for the occasion. For the adobo, I had to try it out as a vegitarian option as well since one of my labmates was vegitarian.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">For dessert, I had so many things in mind I ended up with a tasting platter. For the frozen dessert, I originally planned to make a buko-pandan gelatin salad. Unfortunately, my pandan jello did not set so I just mashed it together with the cream and made some kind of sherbet that still had the refreshing taste of pandan.  They really liked the taste of pandan and kept on asking about it. The rice cake / puto turned out well and I was surprised since it was the first time I made it.</p>

They all agreed they had a blast on the &#8220;culinary adventure&#8221;.  My boss even commented that I should already extend my Ph.D. to seven years, haha.  My friends now call me &#8220;Chef.&#8221;  Not really, but why not?  Well, if things don&#8217;t go well with my Ph.D. at least I know I have a fallback!  A Filipino restaurant in Europe would really be something interesting, wouldn&#8217;t it?  I&#8217;m sure the folk here in Heidelberg would welcome it.</p>

Visitar Heidelberg nos llena el espíritu de fantasía y ensoñación. <p><strong>Destino:</strong> Heidelberg,situada a 80 kms de Frankfurt, alberga el castillo en ruinas más conocido de Alemania.  <strong>Imperdible:</strong> El Heidelberg Schloss (Castillo de Heidelberg), desde donde se divisa toda la ciudad y ofrece un paisaje impresionante especialmente para los amantes de la fotografía. Se puede pasar todo un día ahí, recorriendo el castillo palmo a palmo, dejándose llevar por la historia de sus ruinas y por su increíble encanto. Igualmente, el castillo alberga el Museo Alemán de Farmacia, que exhibe desde fórmulas farmacéuticas antiguas hasta los envases usados para preparar medicamentos.<br />
<strong>Memorable:</strong> Pasear por el Philosophenweg (Camino de los Filósofos), que se encuentra en la margen opuesta al castillo. Desde el camino, se divisa el castillo y toda su increíble majestuosidad. Ver caer el sol desde ahí y ver como el castillo se pierde mientras se apagan las luces del día es una experiencia que quita el aliento.<br />
<strong>Recomendacion: </strong>En la parte moderna y cosmopolita de la ciudad, se encuentra el <a title="Print Media Academy" href="http://www.print-media-academy.com/www/html/en/startpage" target="_blank">Print Media Academy</a>, que se ubica enfrente de la estación de tren.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Wer hätte das gedacht: Zuerst sollte die Bausubstanz des alten Schlosshotels auch beim Bau der Luxuswohnungen erhalten und restauriert werden, dann stellte der Bauherr überraschend fest, dass man leider doch alles abreißen müsse, da baufällig. So ein Pech!</p>
<p>Der unglaubliche Vorgang rund um diesen neuen Schandfleck für das Heidelberg-Panorama hat System. Auch andere Projekte, wie die Gründerzeit-Villa an der Bergstraße in Neuenheim, wurden nach dem gleichen Prinzip sturmreif geschossen.</p>
<p>Auch hier wurde vom Investor ein altes, als stark restaurierungsbedüftig bekanntes Gebäude erworben, um dann wenig später &#8220;überraschend&#8221; festzustellen, dass die Wände feucht sind und man die historische Villa abreißen müsse. &#8220;Mit einer Restaurierung der bestehenden Bausubstanz könne man hier kein Geschäft beim späteren Verkauf der Wohnungen machen&#8221;. Man muss sich das mal vorstellen: Ein Profi-Investor kauft für Millionen ein altes, baufälliges Objekt und behauptet nachher, er hätte nicht gewusst, in welchem Zustand das Objekt war. Das ist nicht blöd, sondern unverschämt, die Öffentlichkeit so verarschen zu wollen.</p>
<p>Noch frecher ging&#8217;s dann beim Projekt Schlosshotel zu. Hier ist einer der größten und erfahrensten Baukonzerne (Hochtief) der Bauherr. Schade, dass dieser DAX-Konzern mit zehntausenden Mitarbeitern keinen Bauingenieur im Haus hat, die einen Altbau auf seinen Zustand beurteilen können&#8230;</p>
<p>Hier müssen wir von SOS Heidelberg natürlich weiter fragen: Wer trägt denn die Verantwortung dafür, dass in beiden Fällen (und weiteren, wie z.B. Möchhofstraße und Lutherstraße in Neuenheim, 2005) nachträglich Abrissgenehmigungen für denkmalgeschützte Gebäude erteilt wurden? So eine als &#8220;Versehen&#8221; getarnte Frechheit von Bauunternehmen und gierigen Investoren darf doch eine Stadtverwaltung nicht nachträglich noch belohnen!</p>
<p>Und im nächsten Schritt stellt sich die Frage, weshalb die Verantwortlichen der Stadt solche indiskutablen Abrissgenehmigungen erteilen. Wer hat welche Vorteile davon? Wird hier noch jemand anderes belohnt?</p>
<p>Wir bleiben dran und werden mal nachschauen, welche Namen in diesem Zusammenhang wo auftauchen. Vielleicht ergänzt der ein oder andere Blogger hier auch mal die Recherche?</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Ein &#8220;zweitklassiges&#8221; (Originalton Stadtverwaltung) Kongresszentrum für Heidelberg? Ob das angesichts immer öfter leerstehender Kongresshäuser in anderen Städten notwendig ist, mögen andere Wissen.</p>
<p>Aber was soll dieser blödsinnige &#8220;Schuhkarton&#8221; neben der Stadthalle? Hat mal einer der Juroren vom Philosophenweg aus auf die Altstadt geschaut und sich vorgestellt, wie dieser Bauklotz das historische Alstadt-Panorama verschandelt? Und weshalb gerade dieser Entwurf, der dann in seiner Trostlosigkeit kaum zu überbieten ist?</p>
<p>Eine Säulenhalle wie ein Friedhofsgebäude, aber keine Bereicherung für Heidelberg!<br />
Ich wüsste mal gerne, weshalb sich die Jury gerade für diesen Entwurf entschieden hat, und was die einzelnen Jury-Mitglieder dazu gesagt haben. Vielleicht weiß das ja einer der Blog-Leser hier?</p>
<p>Völlig unverständlich ist mir, wie man so einen Bauklotz dorthin platzieren kann und damit die ganze Idee &#8220;Stadt am Fluss&#8221; zunichte macht. Noch mehr Verkehr, der dann am Neckar entlang unterwegs sein wird, trotz Tunnel. Da kann man sich den Tunnel auch sparen. </p>
<p>Was ist denn aus dem viel besseren Platz für ein Kongresszentrum neben dem Bahnhof geworden? Das liegt wenigstens verkehrstechnisch gut. Und hat mal einer die Belegungszahlen vergleichbarer Kongresshäuser aktuell angeschaut? Das kann doch gar nicht gut gehen&#8230;!</p>

<p>Julia wollte schon als Kind immer Sachen machen, von denen es hieß, dass sie nicht gingen. Mit 8 Jahren wollte sie zum Beispiel die Küche neu tapezieren. Ihre Mutter sagte: &#8220;Das geht nicht!&#8221;. Da wartete Julia einfach, bis ihre Mutter ins Bett gegangen war. Und als die Mutter am nächsten Morgen aufstand, war die ganze Küche komplett mit einer stylishen Tapete tapeziert. Die kleine Julia saß ziemlich verkleistert auf dem Fensterbrett und sagte: &#8220;Siehst du, es geht doch!&#8221; So zumindest die Legende.</p>
<p>Seitdem sind 22 Jahre vergangen. Julia hat jetzt ihre eigene Näh- und Designwerkstatt in der Bergheimer Straße. Wie das aussieht, seht Ihr auf <a href="http://www.naehkoenigin.de">www.naehkoenigin.de</a>.</p>
<p>In der kleinen fensterlosen aber äußerst geschmackvollen Bude finden neben Nähkursen und Modeschauen auch Gitarrenunterricht, Englischunterricht und &#8220;Jelly&#8221; statt, das sowas ist wie ein Offenes Büro, wo man lernen und arbeiten oder aber Seminare von <a href="http://twitter.com/powtac">powtac </a>besuchen kann. Die Location trägt den anglophilen Namen <a href="http://www.actionhouse.org/">Actionhouse</a> und wird von dem christlichen Verein Oneway e.V. verwaltet. Oneway, das sind Julia und noch viele andere Leute, die ich nicht alle kenne.</p>
<p>Ja, und wäre Heidelberg nicht Heidelberg, dann hätte die Location auch Fenster. Dafür gibt es hier aber einen &#8220;Spiegel&#8221; von 1967 mit Rudi Dutschke auf dem Cover. Sich mit Raritäten zu umgeben, die nach Kommunismus, aber auch nach Kapitalismus, Großstadt und Kindheit aussehen, ist eine wahre Kunst. Eine Kunst, die einem dabei hilft, sich in Heidelberg auf einmal wieder ganz wohl zu fühlen. Das hier ist deshalb der erste Blogeintrag zu lohnenswerten Locations in Heidelberg. Der Blog wünscht Actionhouse viel Gelingen beim Weiterbestehen!</p>

<p style="text-align:center;">I guess everybody knows the quote &#8220;Life is not only black and white&#8221;. In my world &#8216;life&#8217; was not all colourful, at least &#8216;orange&#8217; didn&#8217;t play a big role. I honestly admit that I didn&#8217;t even consider it  to be a colour. I couldn&#8217;t imagine how this colour could paint my life. But because from time to time changes come into our world&#8230; &#8216;orange&#8217; surrendered me. I started to adore it. So, I reached  the conclusion  that  autumn and my life would be &#8220;black &#38; white&#8221; without orange.</p>

Because I am alone here in the dorm, I can cook anything I want&#8211;I&#8217;ve tried making porkchops with peach sauce, frozen syrup desserts, ice cream with balsamic vinegar, pasta in bacon fat and hopefully all other stuff in the coming months. Yes, very unhealthy. That&#8217;s why next week is salad week!  Haha Right now I&#8217;m waiting for the peach syrup with peach and mango chunks to semi-freeze. <p>It has been nearly three months since my plane touched down in Germany and I have yet to touch a single burger, let alone be in the proximity of one.  Until today.  On a Friday night.  A cold winter day.  Here in Heidelberg.  At Mandy’s Fast Food Center.</p>

<p>Mandy’s Burger is more than a typical fast food eatery.  Sure, they have a service counter typical of fast food restaurants.  But enter the dining area and you will notice that the seating and design is stylish and chic &#8211; a stark contrast to the greasy food being served up.  The place has several arcades and a couple of slot machines, which makes the place confusing.  Is it a family friendly place?  Or an upscale diner?  Maybe it’s a mix of both.</p>
<p>Like pretty much all major fast food chains, Mandy’s Burger has special value meals that can be easily ordered by saying a single number.  For example, order Menu 1 and you will get a double burger (your choice of a double patty hamburger, double cheeseburger, or double Heidelberger), a small order of fries, and a small drink.  8 your lucky number?  Then that will you get a Heidelberger with cheese, fries, and a beverage.  Size wise, think kid’s meal. </p>

<p>The burgers are a disappointment.  A Heidelberger comes with a hamburger patty, 1 slice of tomato, lettuce, Heidelberg sauce – an orange-red sauce reminiscent of In-N-Out sauce – all in between a sesame seed bun.  The side ingredients are entirely let down by the main component of the burger &#8211; the meat.  The beef patty is made up of what appears to be minced meat, rather than ground beef.  The texture is odd, tasting more like Salisbury steak that came from a TV dinner.  In fact, one bite and you can tell that the meat has been frozen.  Simply upsetting.  Overall, the taste of the burger is okay, but it’s hard to get over the soft texture.</p>

<p>However, the other items on the menu, particularly the chicken nuggets, are marvelous.  The fries are rather thick and lightly salted.  Good flavor, reminding me of potato chips.  The chicken nuggets are surprisingly delicious.  They aren&#8217;t your typical fast food nuggets.  These are made with real chicken breast meat with crunchy breading.  Unexpected is the type of coating used – it tastes like crushed corn flakes.  The nuggets are not uniformly shaped, so that is also a good indication that they aren’t made up of processed meat.  Get the nuggets hot and crispy and they will remind you of hot wings.  Absolutely appetizing.</p>
<p>The service here is excellent.  The female cashier taking my order was patient and kept a smile despite some communication problems.  Upon service, the cook declared it was his first day on the job.  Despite forgetting some items that needed reminding, the fact that the nuggets came piping hot and delicious earns him an A+ in my book.  Even though the menu lists prices for dipping sauce, I was given Heinz barbeque sauce without any cost.</p>

<p>Overall, the food is satisfactory and the prices are reasonable &#8211; Menu 8 will set you back 4,90 € while an order of chicken nuggets (9 pieces) 3,80 €.  Add on excellent service and an odd, but hip dining area and you have a fine establishment.  Even though Mandy may make her burgers differently, she knows how to make her chicken nuggets the right way.</p>

<p>Mandy’s Burger, located inside the Mandy’s Fast Food Center in the southern part of Heidelberg, is a quality American style burger joint featuring various types of burgers, fish sandwiches, chicken items, and sausages.  10 % Student Discount Available.  Service with a smile. </p>

Hella Moormann liegt in der Heidelberger Frauenklinik &#8211; mit Rosemarie Hirte als Bettnachbarin. Um sich die Zeit zu vertreiben, vertraut Hella der Zimmergenossin die abenteuerlichsten Geheimnisse an. Von Beruf Apothekerin, leidet sie unter ihrem Retter- und Muttertrieb, der daran schuld ist, dass sie immer wieder an die falschen Männer gerät &#8211; und in den abenteuerlichsten Situationen: eine Erbschaft, die es in sich hat, Rauschgift, ein gefährliches künstliches Gebiss, ein leichtlebiger Student und ein Kind von mehreren Vätern sind mit von der Partie. Und nicht zu vergessen Rosemarie Hirte in der Rolle einer unberechenbaren Beichtmutter&#8230;</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Inhalt:</span><br />
Hella liegt in der Frauenklinik in Heidelberg und erzählt niemand geringeren als Rosemarie Hirte (bekannt aus &#8220;Der Hahn ist tot&#8221;) ihre Lebensgeschichte.  Hella gerät schon seit ihrer Jugendzeit immer an die falschen Kerle. Der Grund dafür mag in ihrem Helfersyndrom liegen, denn dies weiß auch sie selbst. Aber dies abzustellen ist bekanntlich schwer. Und so gerät sie im Alter von 34 Jahren an den sieben Jahren jüngeren Zahnmedizinstudenten Levin. Levin ist ein wahrer Tunichtgut und lässt sich von Hella aushalten, denn an sein Erbe kommt er erst ran, wenn sein Großvater stirbt. Aber wieso so lange warten, man kann doch ein bisschen nachhelfen! Vor allem wenn man eine Apothekerin als Freundin hat. Als sein Großvater stirbt, erlebt Levin eine Überraschung, aber dazu verrate ich jetzt nichts.<br />
Levin bleibt nicht Hellas einziger Mann, sie verliebt sich in den besten Freund ihres Mannes und gerät dadurch in so manche Schwierigkeit. Als ob dies nicht schon langen würde, setzt sie dem ganzen noch die Krone auf und verliebt sich noch in einen verheirateten Mann mit zwei Kindern und einer psychischkranken Frau. Dabei möchte Hella eigentlich nur ein ruhiges Familienleben, dem sie selbst und auch ihre Männer im Wege stehen.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Meinung:</span><br />
Mein dritter Noll hat mir gut gefallen. Vor allem die Rückkehr von Rosemarie Hirte, auch wenn sie hier nur am Rande als bettlägrige Kranke vorkommt. Allerdings kommt ja da noch etwas zum Schlus. <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':-)' class='wp-smiley' /><br />
Wie auch bei den anderen Romanen von Ingrid Noll kommt der schwarze Humor, Sarkasmus und Bissigkeit nicht zu kurz. Interessant sind auch immer wieder Hellas Gedanken, wie viel Rosemarie von ihrer Lebensgeschichte überhaupt mit bekommt. <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':-)' class='wp-smiley' /><br />
Ein Buch für alle, die schwarzen Humor und auch Sarkasmus mögen.</p>
