Gabe Somma landed a helicopter behind Deering High School, to have the staff and students see the way the helicopter works. As a graduate from Deering High School, Lt. Somma was able to show his helicopter and enlighten students. According to the Principal, “It’s great to welcome a Ram back to Deering who has done so well while serving his country.”

It is exciting to have local individuals from Southern Maine grow up to achieve such great things. I hope to soon follow in his footsteps, and be able to come back and share my experiences.

By me All photos me too, copyrighted With the winter clampdown at the field proceeding as planned de

By me
All photos me too, copyrighted

With the winter clampdown at the field proceeding as planned despite the unusually warm weather – leading to some serious photo-deprivation – I thought I’d dig through my database and cobble together a short post to keep this blog going until something new happens . And noticing that they’re strangely under-represented in my previous posts, I’ve decided to concentrate a bit on helicopters.

Despite Lučko being somewhat of a hub for general aviation in this part of Croatia, we don’t often see many civil helicopters. Apart from one local Robinson R-44 – and the five-strong Police squadron – we don’t have much of a choice here, the limiting factor being fuel availability. A vast majority of civil-registered helicopters in the country are turbine-powered, and the lack of Jet A at Lučko (except for military and police use) means we’re not all that interesting . Nevertheless, I’ve given it my best shot and this is what I’ve come up with…

1. Sud SE.3130 Alouette III, 9A-HAT:

First on the list is a very rare 1961. Alouette III, by far and away the oldest helicopter in Croatia. Operated by Eudora Let Vodice based at Zemunik airbase (LDZD) near Zadar, this fascinating whirlybird is a rare visitor to Lučko, having last been here almost two years ago. Unfortunately, it was damaged about a week ago, when a drunk police officer crashed his car through the Zemunik perimeter fence (a public road crosses one of the taxiways) and caused significant damage among the aircraft on the apron – including totaling AK Zadar’s C172.

Wearing a simple, all-over army green scheme, HAT looks like something that came out of M*A*S*H

Almost like being serviced out in the field in 'Nam...

To conserve the helicopter's limited service life remaining, non essential trips to various airfields are flown on the back of a low trailer . Assembly/disassembly is relatively quick and painless, as you only need to detach the main rotor blades and you're done

2. Bell 206B JetRanger II, 9A-HBC:

Second up is – what are the odds – the second oldest helicopter in the country, manufactured in 1973 . A nowadays rather rare JetRanger II, 9A-HBC is operated by the Croatian Police, mostly used for training, personnel and liaison flights. One of my favorite helicopters here, it’s always a joy to catch it flying. It’s a very photogenic thing .

Sporting a catchy 70s aquamarine scheme, HBC is seen sliding away from the Police helipad. Out back is the Ecos apron, as well as one of the now-sold Air Tractors previously featured here

Plugged in and almost ready to fly after a prolonged period in the hangar

How not to get hit by a helicopter... While externally identical to the later JetRanger III, HBC is still somehow more interesting

3. Agusta-Bell AB.212, 9A-HBM:

The “heavy” of the non-military helicopter world here, 9A-HBM is and remains the largest helicopter flying in the country, as well as one of only two twins. Produced by Agusta in Italy, HBM is also operated by the Police and is an active participant in SAR, EMS and firefighting missions down at the coast. The only helicopter with some hauling capacity, it is also used by special forces during rappelling missions.

Looking imposing on approach . A big Huey, but still a Huey, its lines are instantly recognizable

Off for some rappelling practice with the Alfas, the Police special unit team. The crew would lower two lines on either side of the helicopter, down which two men could descend at the same time (to maintain balance). In this photo, the Alfas are still not on board and would be picked up at the "drop zone" away from the main runway

4. Bell 206B-3 JetRanger III, 9A-HBZ and 9A-HDB:

Representing the Police some more are 9A-HBZ and HDB, both JetRanger IIIs. Filling pretty much the same roles as HBC, they’re the most often seen Police helicopters, bearing the brunt of the squadron’s work.

HBZ approaching its pad in lighting I have been hoping for for ages .
A few photographs taken on the 20th November 2009 of the floods in Cockermouth town. These few posted here have been taken on the day after the evening’s flood waters that raced through the town on the eve of the 19th November. The volume of water in the confluent of two rivers and from about 300mm of rainfall, which fell in a 24 hour period was too much for the rivers to bear. My thoughts are with all those affected by these floods and heartfelt credit goes to all the rescue services and volunteers involved.

Or like the dead, your choice. Me, myself, and I, sleep in sweet peace AND like the dead. True story

Or like the dead, your choice. Me, myself, and I, sleep in sweet peace AND like the dead. True story.

I’ve known about my – shall we call it? – sleeping ability. Yeah, that’s it, for a while now. Notice I did not call it a disability. To me it’s not. I go to sleep. I sleep like the dead. I wake up, go to work, or whatever. No insomnia, never had it. No slight noise jerking me awake at o’dark thirty.

Sweet sleep. Most times. Unless, I have nightmares. I have a standard recurring one. I watched Red Dawn so many times, that I have a dream where aliens encounter like the Russians. Their ships descend, and they rappel down on the terrified people.

It gets a little weird after that, because the safe ground we run to is a cemetery. The cemetery residents come alive, crawling from their graves sites, and pushing up more than daisies. Well then, NO where is safe. I guess that’s the moral of the dream. That, and don’t let your children watch Red Dawn, Night of the Living Dead, American Werewolf in London, or Alien movies at a young tender age. Mkay?

All that, and not to mention as a little girl, I would wake up at night convinced there were demons in the room with me (shudder). The only way I could go back to sleep was to sing the ONLY Christian song I knew (we didn’t go to Church), which was from choir, called My Lord. So you can see why I don’t wake up at night. I just don’t. I sleep. I learned at young tortured age -thanks mom and dad – to JUST sleep. No matter what, SLEEP.

As an adult, this is really awesome. I hear about so many people, (via Facebook) that have all these sleeping problems. Not so for me, I lay my head down and I am out. BLISS, pure bliss. Nothing can wake me up. In fact, I used to set three alarms in different parts of the room. Now, thank goodness, I only need one and it’s set to crickets. I assume crickets wake me up because it’s not the freeway sounds I’m used to.

The freeway is right out the back door. I don’t mean it’s out the back door, down the hill, through the meadow, and THEN there is the pesky, noisy highway. No. I mean out the back door, ten steps to the fence, over the fence is the access road, and RIGHT next to the access road, separated by <del datetime="2009-11-21T14:12:31+00:00">an illegal exit from a traffic jam</del> a grassy embankment, is the FREEWAY. The noisy truck roaring, trailers banging, tire wheel crunching freeway. It bothers me not a bit, because? I sleep <del datetime="2009-11-21T15:44:27+00:00">dead</del> sweet.

So get this, I wake up two nights ago, yeah I know, I actually do arouse (in my defense the window was wide open). I hear sirens, somewhere around 4am. They started off way in the distance and get louder, and louder, and louder – then rrrruppppt. They stop. Like right outside behind my place. Then I hear another siren, rrreeeow, rrreeeeow – closer and closer – errrooowwww, rruupppppt!

My thought was, ohmygosh, they are right outside! I should get up, go look, and see what is going on. I promptly fell back asleep. THEN, I wake up again (barely) my puppy is in her crate, shaking it. It’s LOUD in the room. Salem barks, and puppy Anna is making this sad little noise between a bark, a yelp, and whine. Merufferrrffft. Merufferrffft. It was the oddest thing I have ever heard. Of course I tell her to shut up, so I can go back to sleep – which I do. I’m convinced it was self-induced because – I’m just sayin’ – demons could have been around, YIKES.

Next day, I see my roommate John, my niece’s boyfriend, all excited he is like, “Hey, did you hear that last night?”

Suddenly I perk up, because I realize, I did hear something and it wasn’t just the sirens was it? (or demons?) I tell him about the sirens. He says, “Yeah, I heard them too. I could see emergency lights flashing through our window. I get up to go see, when it sounds like a PLANE is landing on top of the house.”

I’m like, “NO WAY!!!”. It hits me how Anna was shaking, and scared out of her mind, SHE wasn’t shaking the crate, what was passing over us was shaking the crate, and the whole house. I CAN’T BELIEVE I SLEPT THROUGH THAT.

John told me how freaked out he was – it was sooo loud – all the walls were vibrating. He went outside. Sure enough, several emergency vehicles, and a helicopter – ON THE FREEWAY. He checked the paper the next day but couldn’t find out what happened (obviously an accident).

But I know what really happened. I slept through a friggin’ helicopter practically landing on our roof. WOW.

Most of you know Jason is diabetic, type 1, takes the shots. AND it is possible (and has happened) that he could go low in his blood sugar (need insulin), have seizures in his sleep, and go into a coma. Yeah, a coma. Unless, say his wife (this happened too) wakes up, calls an ambulance, and saves his life.

So imagine, his reaction upon hearing this story, “What happens if we get married, and I go into a coma? Who is going to wake up, and call the ambulance?”

For once, my special sleeping ability IS a disability. FAIL. However, my only answer, because obviously – my track record is very bad – I have FAITH. I have faith, that I would wake up, or Salem would wake me up. I have to believe I would know. Just know, supernaturally.

If a ghost can use an alarm to wake me up, ha, I just got why it used an alarm, since that is the ONLY thing that would wake me up. Then by gosh, I can be woken up. I would sense danger…. I just know it. I believe that. I trust God. (let’s not even mention NOW with him living ALONE, what happens NOW? Same thing FAITH)

So, Jason, don’t worry my friend. Sleep sweet, if the times comes, I won’t let you down. (but if we get married, we should totally get another dog just in case) I’m really proud of myself, how I obscurely threw that in.

P.S. Sydney slept through it too. Yeah, if a tornado comes, we’re doomed.

Wow. Just, well, amazing. So amazing I momentarily left my Weetabix unguarded and the milk got a head of itself. Soggy Weetabix. On top of everything. What a morning.

Bill, well he usually doesn’t get flustered, but, my God, he was nearly shouting. He was possessed by shouty shouty Vanessa Feltz (you’ve seen her on the London local news, well those of you in London have, shouting, great entertainment is shouty shouty Feltz – IS FAT REALLY FAT OR IS IT PEOPLE’S IMAGINATION – TUNE IN FROM NIIIIIIINE!!!!!).

Poor Sian just looked flustered. She’d never seen 12 inches. She didn’t think it was possible. The largest ever recorded and here she was, looking at it’s after affects. She closes her eyes and wonders what it would have felt like to have been there when those 12 inches came.

They go live to the Cumbria correspondent who is stood in the dark talking over dark pictures and getting vaguely hysterical, in the dark.“You can see the damage,” she witters.

I think you’ll find we can’t. It’s dark. We can’t see anything. Except your eager hopeful face that just screams “Prime time baby. This is my ticket back to big time. Thankyou rain God.”

I doubt it darling. You haven’t even found us a weeping person. Or there must be some bastard in a blow up boat rowing around smugly following the TV cameras so he gets on telly. Or even I could find a woman standing in some water saying it’s Gordon Brown’s fault and that she can’t wait for the postman to get on his jet ski to deliver the mail because then she can ring The Sun up and say he got her son’s name wrong. She hasn’t got a son. But, you know, that’s not the point is it. Brown you bastard.

We’re back in the studio and Bill just looks tired. Sian’s still dreaming of those twelve inches.

“Twelve inches!” says Bill. Sian smiles. Catches herself.

“It’s horrific,” she says. Nice save. She congratulates herself.

And, well, what more can you say, really. Twelve inches of rain, it’s quite a lot of rain. It’s wet, isn’t it? And the rivers, they don’t like it too wet. So pernickety. And 200 people got a ride in a helicopter.

You could say it was a tad ridiculous in a country where it pretty much rains every year at around the same time, where it pretty much always causes flooding, and where it pretty much always results in people saying it will never happen again, and where it then pretty much always does happen again, that we can’t cope with a downpour, even now.

Other countries must be puzzled. Poor Holland, it thought it had a monopoly on water-based danger, what with it being flat. But us Brits, we’re plucky. Given the chance, we can fuck pretty much anything up.

*Written before the death of PC Bill Barker was confirmed. Condolences go out to his family.

Will I won’t I shall I shan’t I? Write? Well. I’m unwell. A long felt awarenes

Will I won’t I shall I shan’t I? Write? Well. I’m unwell. A long felt awareness of continually running at sub-par always seems to manifest whenever I take some time off. Maybe the energy and stresses of work allowing my immune system to keep trucking on, keeping a low profile from the distracted awareness of my brain, crash and burn when I stop. When the long weekend and relaxation kicked in it translated into rapid sinus congestion, sore throat and muzzy head.

Reasons to write? One being the fun weekend we all had in Akaroa. Got monumentally drunk Friday night with good friends and to my immense sense of self satisfaction I managed to play the entirety of Tarot Sport to a room full of people in a party type situation. And only 2 people asked me to turn it off (cunningly by this point of the evening attention spans had been tequilaed down to bare seconds so I just ignored their pleas for musical leniency). I actually played Street Horrrsing too but there was only one other left drinking and awake by that point so not sure I can claim that one.

Our sortie on Saturday for a bit of a ramble was scuppered when we arrived on the desolate beach to find a freaked out surfer who pointed us out to his 2 mates who were being swept out by the rip. Our mate jumped in his kayak and went out to help the swept away guy (the other one made it to the rocks) while we went to call the coast guard.

One helicopter later, lots of standing around for us (plus a fuck load of paddling our mate) and all 3 were safe. Good result and they were sheepishly nonplussed once it was all over. Surfers are stupid. We on the other hand went sea kayaking the following day and didn’t need helicopter rescue. We did need burgers though.

Then we all got to see this:

And finally, perhaps the most joyous thing of all is that someone has posted the boot of the Royal Albert Hall gig by Mogwai from 2006. In the 7 times I’ve seen them this was and still is the best they’ve ever been and I’ve been hoping for a copy ever since. Everything about that night was perfect. The venue was immense; the crowd were real fans, committed and politely quiet; the sound was enormous, it filled and decimated everything else in the hall, you could feel it through every inch of your body (I thought the bass on 2 rights was going to rupture my sternum); the version of 2 rights was the best I’ve ever heard live, the welcome return of Tracy and the second surprise encore (which I almost missed thinking they had gone) of a monumental and righteous MFMK was perfect. I was there with a sweet Jewish San Franciscan girl I was sort of dating at the time at the end of a brief summer of letting go; she jumped a mile out of her seat at the noise mid way through fear satan and half way through MFMK said, ‘wait, this is…’

Yes it is; with a smile. It felt better sharing it with someone and I was elated for days. The recording’s pretty good so please download, listen and share it with me.
