Josh Kumra has had a busy year and has since signed a solo deal with RCA, toured extensively and has delivered a stunning set of songs for his debut album, scheduled for release in September 2012.

For anyone unfamiliar with his music, Josh Kumra produces flawless acoustic songs with a breathtaking lyrical prowess and when presented in such a soulful, raspy voice filled with honesty, it is impossible not to be drawn in. It is this natural ability that is setting him apart from other emerging artists his age, however, as much as I enjoy listening to his songs I have wondered if he could adapt his voice further and surprise us by becoming a little edgier.

This is exactly where his debut single ‘Helicopters & Planes‘ fits in, the single features K Koke and was produced by UK man of the moment Naughty Boy, who has worked with a variety of artists from Leona Lewis to Emeli Sande.

In this track Josh really embraces the UK urban scene and is taking his time to develop this carefully. His roots will always remain in the acoustic realms along with similar artists such as Paolo Nutini and James Morrison, however he has quite rightly decided to experiment. Genres have begun to fuse together and by associating himself and collaborating with rappers such as wretch 32 and K Koke, he has been able to dip one toe into the world of grime and hip hop, not only widening his audience, but ultimately allowing for more creative collaborations in the future.

‘Helicopters & Planes‘ is brilliantly described as being “like a beat-peppered Ray Lamontagne or Gnarls Barkley in an introspective mood and slightly paranoid”, with Josh’s smooth vocals and dark lyrics set against strong beats and dramatic tones, being compared to Gnarls Barkley is a logical comparison.

Listening to the song for the first time I was pleasantly surprised by this new edgier sound, yet knowing the rap verse was due at any second I was concerned that it might take away from the song. However K Koke’s rawness in the verse fits perfectly adding an interesting element and flowing well. The music video accompanying the song creates the perfect vibe of isolation and paranoia, the camera angle used creates quite a triply feel, especially when he is stood on the edge of buildings but again compliments the song well.

Overall, I feel ‘Helicopters & Planes‘ is a good choice as a debut single as it demonstrates the versatility in his music. This is definitely going to be an interesting Summer for Josh Kumra and by the time his debut album is released I have a feeling his will be the name on everybody’s lips.

Josh Kumra, famous for featuring on Wretch 32′s Don’t Go is currently working on his debut album. Helicopters & Planes will act as the first single and features Roc Nation signee K Koke.

Although the visuals are simple for me it’s all about the music and with production from Naughty Boy you won’t be disappointed

As far as the video is concerned, it is, for what appears to be a fairly low-budget effort, there seems to be some great pieces of cinematography in there – making genuinely good use of the ‘camera-attatched-to-the-body’, as opposed to being utilised merely to induce some kind of nausea.

This one’s taken from his forthcoming debut album, which is billed for a September release date.

We first heard of Josh on Wretch 32′s track Don’t Go, since then he’s been working on his album through RCA and most importantly that first single which, after a year of waiting is here!
