Review: Dark Entries: A John Constantine Novel Author- Ian Rankin Artist- Werther Dell’edera A

Review:

Dark Entries: A John Constantine Novel

Author- Ian Rankin Artist- Werther Dell’edera

A few years ago I got into crime fiction for about 3 weeks. I was burning thorough every Joe Lansdale book I could find, and several of his works are best classified as mystery. I liked what he was doing with what was, to me, an unfamiliar genre. It was no secret that Joe hisownself was a fan and friend of Andrew Vachss.

I picked up the first 5 or so Burke novels, and made it through 4 of them before succumbing to a dark depression sparked by Vachss unrelenting fetishization of child sex crimes. I know, the man’s a saint and a philanthropist, but he describes the sex crimes in the same way that closeted preachers describe man on man action. It was just too much.

What does this have to do with Ian Rankin, Hellblazer, and comics? First, I’m establishing that my familiarity with the crime genre is limited to the point that I can only name 2 modern authors, and Rankin is not one of them. Also, like Vachss and Lansdale, Rankin is a mystery novelist with an affinity for comic books. So when Vertigo began a crime imprint in Summer 2009, they sensibly chose Rankin as the token non-comics writer to launch the line.

The first character that leaps to mind when one thinks “crime comics” is.. not John Constantine. In fact, Detective Chimp would have placed higher on my list of pre-existing characters to place in a serious crime book.

The publisher’s confusion about what genre their flagship character of 25 years belonged to was enough to get me to pass on the book, despite my love of the character in question. I was being the typical cranky fan, judging without knowing shit. Well, not only are comic readers cranky, they are also bargain hunters. A used copy of Dark Entries for $9.98 got me right the hell over my resistance a few weeks ago.

What’s the plot if it’s not a crime story? John Constantine is approached by a mysterious stranger with a fat wad of bills. He’s a TV show producer in charge of a reality program that places a group of twenty-somethings in a haunted house. The Real World: Amityville, basically. Lots of manufactured scares are planned to terrify the residents. However, before the fake horrors are unleashed, they all start experiencing visions that the producers didn’t plan. John is hired to go in and find out who’s haunting the haunters.

The criticism of reality TV feels like an unused Delano plot from the early days of the Hellblazer series. It’s a good, fright inducing tale, that touches on some of the same kinds of psychological horrors as the works of Junji Ito. Werther Dell’edera’s black and white art is spontaneous and moody, evoking the claustrophobia and creepiness of the situation well.

Does it work on any level as a mystery novel? Well, the plot device that carries the book does have two twists built in, both of which I was able to anticipate, one much earlier than the other. In all, the author did a good job of giving the reader enough to work with the figure out these twists without being too obvious about either one. In each case, figuring things out enhanced the anticipation of the characters working things through.

There are a few spots that thank go “clunk”, however. First, Constantine is shown as having a modern widescreen TV in his flat. For the character to have a TV at all seems strange, and for it to be from this decade is even stranger. Also, and I say this without wishing to give anything away, I have a core issue with an aspect of the genre at work here that allows for the corporeal and non-corporeal to behave by the same physical rules.

Ahem.

So, although it is a horrible mystery novel, Dark Entries is, in fact, a damn good John Constantine story. Rankin gets the tone of the character perfectly, walking the line between the poetics of Delano and the straightforwardness of Carey’s portrayals.

Recommended.

Filme: Constantine
Duração: 121 minutos
Ano: 2005
Elenco: Keanu Reeves, Rachel Weizs, Shia LaBeouf
Recomendação: 14 anos

When John Constantine moved from the pages of Swamp Thing into his own comic in 1987, he was an intriguing character, but lacked a lot of background. Moore had planted seeds that could, and would be expanded on by the author he hand-selected to carry on the adventures of his, Bissette and Totleben’s creation.

Jamie Delano was an old friend of Moore’s, a writer who had gotten into comics after his career as a cab driver grew stale. He had previously followed Moore as writer on a run of the English adventure hero Captain Britain. This would be the writer’s American debut, although the book itself would be distinctly British in its concerns. Originally the series was intended to be called Hellraiser, but there was a conflict with an upcoming Clive Barker film which resulted in a last minute change to the title Hellblazer.

Delano quickly set to establishing a life for Constantine. He was a man of some large and frightening reputation England in occult circles, and kept his home-base in London. A group of friends and acquaintances are introduced in the premier issue, most notably Chas. Chas is Constantine’s oldest mate, one who is only peripherally aware of the degree of nastiness that his friend gets up to. As an act of self-reference, Delano shows Chas to be a cab driver. Handy for getting his lead character around without resorting to him having a “Hellblazer-Mobile.” or some such gimmick.

Jamie Delano wrote the majority of the first 40 issues of the series, and has revisited the character a few times since his 1987-1990 run. There were a dozen artists visualizing Delano’s writing, the most notable of which are original series artist, John Ridgway who established the visual tone for the series. He illustrated most of the stories which are contained in Hellblazer: Original Sins, which collects the first 9 issues of the long-running series.

The tone of the series was nasty, and embittered reflection of Thatcher’s England. It was a portrait of an empire in remission. Hellblazer introduced to American comics the same cultural and creative tone that bands such as Shriekback, Bauhaus, and Joy Division offered. In other words, it was Goth before a name was branded on it. It was still free to do and express what it liked, and what it liked was to peer into the abyss, march through the decay, laugh when it could, and shed a tear only when it was all over and no one was looking. The comics were contrarian critiques of what had gone wrong salted with a a mixture of Sysiphian optimism.

Unlike many comics of the era, there was a stark realism to the character of Constantine that shone through tales of capitalist demons, and poly-limbed skinheads. He lived in a world of prejudice, greed, pernicious conservatism, homophobia, gluttony, and religious corruption. Early on a gay friend of John’s named Ray is introduced who has AIDS, a notable first for American comics. That there was a gay character at all portrayed in a positive light in a comic that was not perceived as part of the Underground movement was astonishing for the time. That he was shown to have AIDS and have the character be presented at face value, with no cautionary tale, victimhood, or homophobia attached was unheard of in 1987 in any media that was not specifically directed at a homosexual audience. What readers were given was a gentle portrait of a man who had struggled and was dying in an era when AIDS was effectively an automatic death-sentence.

Delano takes this same story as an opportunity to spotlight the racism, homophobia and xenophobia present in the skinhead movement. As an American, it was my first exposure to “football hooligans”. The skinhead’s desire for purity and conformity is ironically presented as a demon fuses 4 skinheads together into 1 monstrous four-headed eight-armed monstrosity of hate. This was a far cry from the racist skins of the middle-American Punk scene that I saw in 1987. This was a brand of racism that only intense poverty can bring. A far cry from the working and middle class mix of punks at the all-ages show in Kentucky.

Other highlights include Salvation Army analogue the Damnation Army, a tale which uses the internet for chaos magic (in 1988!), and a spell that compels one to consume that which they love most all while wasting away, whether it be food, comic books, or in the case of a priest, a massive crucifix.

Delano walks a fine line with Constantine’s circle of friends. Some characters, like Chas, are close, but kept away from the chaos. Others, like Gary Lester, are right the thick of the occult action, and pay the price. Then there is John’s family consisting of his sister Cheryl, her husband, and his niece Gemma. The extended family is portrayed like a real family. There is familial love of Gemma. Cheryl and John often have friction over different life paths. The brother-in-law is suspicious and begrudgingly accepting of John, viewing John’s occult activities through a Christian lens. It is in this family unit that John is the least guarded, but most protective.

Demonstrating so fully the different roles the lead character plays is an ingenious means to make what could be a distasteful character sympathetic to the reader. We all have different roles we play, and different masks we wear with different groups, particularly if we are behaving outside socially normative behaviors. John has his work friends, his real friends, and his family. Each set of relationships bring out different characteristics.

As most of John’s “work friends” die by story’s end, it could be easy to grow to dislike the character. However, Delano addresses this by showing that all the deaths his lead is responsible for in the cause of defending the disenfranchised from the empowered haunt him. Literally. In this, Delano establishes the character to have a conscience.

The exploration of relationships, the critique of culture, and the potent use of metaphor throughout Delano’s Hellblazer stories are what set the character apart from other genre-based series of the day, and form the template that keeps the character relevant 25 years later.

Delano is writing a new story as an original graphic novel with the character called John Constantine, Hellblazer: Pandemonium. It is illustrated by Jock, who worked on the character a few times with writer Mike Carey in the early 2000’s.

Hellblazer de Andy Diggle Nº 01

Edición original: Hellblazer Joyride TPB

Guión: Andy Diggle
Dibujo: Leonardo Manco

John Constantine is one of the few new characters created in comics in the last 30 years to still ha

John Constantine is one of the few new characters created in comics in the last 30 years to still have not only his own series, but to have ben published uninterrupted since his series debut. The character’s survival is due in part to the high quality of writers that have worked on him since his 1985 debut in Swamp Thing #37.

Alan Moore had been writing DC’s Swamp Thing comic since issue 20, and had maintained a high level of innovation in collaboration with artists Steve Bissette and John Totleben. The artists, who debuted on the series a few months before Moore’s arrival as writer, had done a bit of innovation as well. Moore had recontextualised the lead character, who was originally portrayed as a man that had transmitted into a literal vegetable-like state. Under Moore’s pen, the character was shown to be a walking swampland GMO gone wild that was infused with a consciousness that believed itself to be bio-scientist Alec Holland. An army of smart planarian worms were gathered together into a homunculus, holding out hope they would one day be turned from moss back into a living man.

What does this have to do with John Constantine? Moore, wise to the strengths of his collaborators, would adapt the stories he wrote to match what the artists wanted to draw. For instance, the regeneration of the Swamp Thing from man-trapped-in-plant-body to plant-body-thinks-it’s-human allowed the artists to stop drawing the character as a man in a suit, and to draw him as a plant trying to be human. The visual shift was startling. In issue 25 Bissette and Totleben drew a background character modeled after pop musician Sting. It didn’t take much additional nagging for Moore to write in a character that looked like the musical icon.

Constantine was special. He was introduced as a man of mystery who understood what Swamp Thing really was. He first appeared wearing a trenchcoat and a 2-piece suit, wearing white gloves and smoking. He stood looking out of place yet untouched by any contradictions in the midst of a punk club, sharing secret words with a Goth woman named Judith. We didn’t know as readers that he was a magician just yet, mainly due to the avoidance of the typical comic book costuming. No special emblem, top hat, or wand, unless one wants to re-conextualise the cigarette as a metaphor for a wand. By the middle of the issue the gloves are gone, and he begins looking more himself. Constantine wanders through the issue having pointed yet cryptic conversations with a stuttering teen, a nun, and even thorough a casual sexual encounter with an ex before winding his way across America to the Swamp Thing.

He intersects the lives of Swamp Thing and his partner Abby Arcane by appearing in the back of Abby’s car. Abby takes him to Swamp Thing, who is incapacitated due to an earlier incident. John cajoles the series lead, dangling the promise of special knowledge before him, and leaves with a challenge wrapped in a threat. Concurent to this the characters John spoke with prior to his arrival in the Swamp all sense a mystical/psychic disturbance. All but one, the lover, who meets her death at the hands of a terrible twisted naked thing called the invunche.

It’s a horrifying scene which powerfully establishes what the character is about. The basic rules which have guided the writing of the character through 300 stories since are present.

1. Constantine knows something you don’t.

2. He is using you for something only you posses.

3. He is promising you something in exchange for your special skill or information.

3. The forces he is fighting are larger than any individual.

5. You will die.

So who wants to read 300 hundred stories about a guy who’s bad news, will get you killed, and who knows up front he’s getting you killed?

This brings us to rule 6:

He really does fell every death, and it tears him apart. And that’s what makes the character worthwhile. The internal conflict mixed with the horror that is as likely to come from the tension of his personal interactions that it does from the stakes of the threat involved.

John Constantine became the third lead character of Swamp Thing for the better part of the 3 years following his debut. Moore fleshed him out, spotlighted his inherent nobility, and showed a character who was willing to sacrifice his own life in a war against a coming apocalypse of evil in Swamp Thing 49 and 50. It was noted at the time that the initials “J.C.” were no co-incidence, hinting at the possibility of a familial lineage greater than that of a fellow from Liverpool.

In 1987 the character began starring in his own series, called Hellblazer. Moore chose not to write it, instead approving old friend Jamie Delano as the man best suited to chronicle the magician’s adventures. Artist John Ridgeway we the original artist. The pair would put Constantine directly in the middle of Thatcher’s England, making John a voice of 80’s malaise.

More on Delano’s initial Hellblazer run next time.

So there I was, looking to spend my birthday book tokens on something I’d actually read and not just lump onto my bookcase. From my fumblings through a very small graphic novel section at a chain book store, I picked out the unusual sized Dark Entries from Vertigo and their new Crime line of graphic novels.

I finished reading the book last night and have mixed feelings about the story and artwork. Ian Rankin may write a good crime novel but as a comic book writer, Dark Entries feels a little forced and un-involving. Over the course of the 214 pages, the black and white artwork doesn’t breath enough life into the story for me to say I really enjoyed it. Especially in a character like that of the main protagonist, John Constantine.

Essentially a look at Limbo and its place between Heaven and Hell, Dark Entries doesn’t bring much that is new or develops the Constantine ethos. It instead aims for some obvious and forgettable blows towards reality TV and its fans.

I do like the format given to Vertigo Crime, a self-contained black and white inked story in a hardback off-size(slightly bigger than standard paperback) but I expect more for my £15. Maybe Filthy Rich has more to offer with Brian Azzarello(100 Bullets) onboard as writer – It certainly looks that way from the preview that I have seen.

The latest Felix Castor novel (for US audiences at least) is an enjoyable supernatural mystery, albeit one that doesn’t offer much that’s new to the series. ”Fix” Castor is a freelance exorcist in a world in which ghosts, zombies, and werewolves have become fairly routine. He’s also clearly modeled off of John Constantine, a character that Mike Carey wrote for years previously. And I pretty much view this series as the stories he wasn’t able or allowed to tell while writing for Hellblazer.

This time around Castor is dragged into 3 cases at once. First he’s investigating the sudden suicide of a colleague who had been working on the case of his career. Then there’s the mater of a man on trial for murder whose claiming he was possessed at the time of the crime. And in the background Castor has to fight to protect a demon possessed friend from becoming a paranormal lab rat.

The multiple plot threads are all fairly strong but ultimately they don’t hold together quite as strongly as I would like. Dead Men’s Boots makes for a decent perpetuation of the series, but Carey is definitely capable of better.

Forrige forsøk, etiketten Paradox Press, ga oss Road To Perdition og A History of Violence.

A History Of Violence
Paradox Press/DC Comics

Wagners svært lite muntre, men spennende, A History Of Violence, anbefales også.

Juul Forlag
5/6

Tegneserien bak storfilmen Road To Perdition byr på bedre underholdning.

Vertigo consistently makes the smartest, deepest and most diverse comics for adult readers in the ma

Vertigo consistently makes the smartest, deepest and most diverse comics for adult readers in the mainstream market. Whereas some publishers used the “adult” rating to merely amp the violence and sex, Vertigo allows the freedom such a rating gives them to explore thematic depths, philosophical concepts and ambiguous character traits that more approachable fair shies away from. Of course, using “Scalped” or “Preacher” as an example, the violence and sex isn’t shied away from either when necessary to the story. Yet it’s never the main goal or method in a typical Vertigo work. The problem presented by Vertigo is evident in last month’s cancellation of “Young Liars.” These are not books that fit a wide variety of tastes and preferences. Being funded by a subsection of a mainstream company, in this case DC comics, means that only so much money will be allocated in support of an artistic venture. With creator owned and distributed works like Jeff Smith’s “RASL” or Terry Moore’s “Echo,” low sells and limited appeal is overcome if the author has the time, money and passion to devote to a work that may take years to catch on. DC can always pick another up-and-comer to give a 2 year shot to with Vertigo, or they can move some money back to their main stable and release a new Superman ongoing title.

So, even though there is a tremendous history of smart, great works in Vertigo that got to start, run and come to their natural culmination in the beforehand planned “final issue” like “Sandman,” “Preacher” or “100 Bullets,“ the still ongoing “Hellblazer,” the going-past-originally planned “Fables,” or a host of other books that look like they’re in good shape to end their tale correctly, there are also a lot of books that get the axe before their time. Most recently this is the case with “Vinyl Underground” and “Young Liars.” Both of these titles launched about 2 years ago– “Underground” lasted 12 issues, “Liars” made it to their 16th last month. “Young Liars” is a frustrating example. It was the full work of writer/artist David Lapham, who never got around to wrapping up his creator owned “Stray Bullets” but who looked fired-up to tell this mind-bending, fully involved head-trip adventure through Vertigo in an on-going that never shipped late, often was set on the day it shipped to stores, and always delivered the goods. Axed before its time, we’re left with a hastily thrown together ending that tells us pretty much nothing…we have no idea where this would have really ended up and what detours it would have taken along the way.

So, that said… There are a few very promising works kick-starting this year, all a few issues into the story now. These three books all started around the same time, so the odds on all of them making it to the usual 70 some-odd books it takes to fully wrap a Vertigo tale aren’t tremendous…but if the numbers are decent, they will make it. So as a fan of these, I’m doing my part to get the word out. Buy the monthly…buy the trade too, and, if you like at which point you can sell the “floppies,” but you must buy the monthly if these series’ are going to last. It’s a gamble you take, sure, but you’re certain to be entertained along the way even if the ending never comes. We’re talking about an 8 or 9 dollar a month commitment; dig for some change and take the plunge.

First off, “The Unwritten.” This is a literary fans dream; if you’re a classics dork, check out the entire premise and especially the great detour this past months issue, Issue #5, takes. The basic story follows Tom Taylor, son of a famous author who has died. Taylor is the basis for his fathers best selling books about “Tommy,” a teenage wizard with animal cohorts and adventures. The series is written by Mike Carey and billed as a “literary conspiracy mystery.“ Last month’s issue # 5 tells an alternate history of Rudyard Kipling and features his encounters with Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain). There are things that have occurred in the first 5 issues of this book I haven’t seen done since Neil Gaiman ended “The Sandman,” and I don’t mean to imply any overt similarities other than artistic ambition and non-pandering to popular taste.

Next, “The Unknown Solider.” A fully researched and prepared book by a former self-proclaimed pacifist struggling with the concept of war and “just” violence in the pursuit of peace. It’s set in Uganda and is complete with child soldiers, corrupt governments, agencies with misplaced priorities, humanitarian fervor and real, vivid- yet- dark, life.

“Sweet Tooth,” a post-apocalyptic story of a half-human/half-deer teen in the company of a hunter on the way to the promised land. Bizarre and although entrenched in an overly-used archetype of a setting, wholly invigorating and unconventional enough to make that setting new again.

Okay. I’ve pitched them and if you’ve ever been a fan of comics or graphic novels, pick them up. Support them, lets see them through to their natural conclusion. Don’t forget “Scalped,” either— Vertigo’s best series which seems to be going strong, winning awards and in no danger of cancellation. It’s modern noir at its finest and hopefully one of the above three titles live up to it in time.

Percebam no vídeo o quanto é estranho.

It’s been said elsewhere but it bares repeating, Dark Entries marks the low point in publisher marketing this year. A little history is needed for this. A few years back when Denise Mina was writing Hellblazer she managed to connect Vertigo with her friend, bestselling writer Ian Rankin. Before too long word started to leak out of Rankin writing the book. Then Vertigo started thinking of launching a line of crime books, and with Rankin already commissioned to write for them it made sense to launch the line on his name (which appears in a font roughly 5 times the size of the title).

The only problem, THIS ISN”T A CRIME COMIC!!!!! It’s not even much of a mystery, despite the god awful “graphic mystery” logo on the cover. Also worth noting, the title of this book comes from the name of a reality show that is central to the plot, however the plot description calls that same show “Haunted Mansion”. Nice to see that people are paying attention.

OK, enough with the rant, what about the book itself. It’s a pretty routine Constantine story. There’s a haunted house, a damsel or two he fails to save, a few demons, and a lot of British snark. Rankin also performs admirably for a first time comics writer.

The art from Werther Dell’edera suits the material well, but suffers at the begining because I’m guessing the first 40 pages or so were originally intended for the ongoing series. There are pretty clear chapter breaks, and the art feels like it was inteded to be colored (later in the book the pages gain a lot more detail).

So, this is a pretty good Hellblazer comic and it seems better suited to a graphic novel format than it did a serial. However, if you buy this expecting an Ian Rankin mystery you’re going to be very disappointed.

Buenas, pessoal.

Y, THE LAST MAN.
