I’ve been slacking on my blog. I guess you can say I’ve been preoccupied. I haven’t been slacking on my movie watching though. I saw District 9 and though I don’t usually discuss new movies. I will when I figure out if I loved or hated this one. Matt won’t watch Sons of Anarchy with me because it’s gay. He will though watch In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale(2007). Who ever cast this doozy was a moron. Matthew Lillard, Ray Liotta, and Jason Statham in a period piece movie. I know it’s based on a video game but come on. Well at least Jason Statham has the right accent and who can complain about Burt Reynolds. This movie is a piece of shit. It also had Ron Perlman in it and last night I watched another piece of shit movie with him in it. What movie you ask, umm Hellboy II. That movie was a pointless cg, no plot having, pile of steaming poo. Yes I seem to be obsessed with shit in this blog.

I also sorta watched Southern Comfort(1981) from the acclaimed director/writer Walter Hill. It’s another Deliverance type movie. Some national guard dudes get lost in the woods. While in the woods they piss off some rednecks. Matt says this movie is awesome. It couldn’t really hold my attention. I’ve seen Deliverance, do I need to watch this? At least Deliverance had some disturbing man rape to make it memorable. Maybe I’ll give it another look some other time.

What you need to watch is The Hidden(1987) starring Kyle MacLachlan. I am a little biased because I find Kyle MacLachlan to be horny. I still have dirty fantasies about Agent Dale Cooper. The plot of this movie is seemingly normal law-abiding citizens suddenly go on crime sprees. They steal, murder, maim, and oh listen to heavy metal. I won’t tell you anymore just put it on your netflix list. It’s a gem, watch it. If you dig the 80’s, cop flicks, and sci-fi you will love it.

A few days ago, I read on Science News a bit about a comet housing some proteins integral for producing life. The concept of life beginning on Earth by being struck with a comet or asteroid is not new, I’m fairly sure I heard about it in my High School science classes. However, to find some evidence of this theory being truth makes me pretty happy, especially coupled with the news earlier in the month about Titan potentially brewing life on its surface. If the human race survives long enough, we might just see the birth of life elsewhere in our solar system. I was always convinced in the statistical improbability of there not being other life in the universe. It’s just too bad the universe is so goddamned big that no living thing can traverse it. Yet.

I’d like my first post to be longer but I’m watching Hellboy II and it’s really distracting me.

The first Hellboy movie, directed by my current favorite director Guillermo del Toro, impressed me b

The first Hellboy movie, directed by my current favorite director Guillermo del Toro, impressed me because of its awesome ability to marry del Toro’s breathtaking cinematography, his fabulous special effects, and his fantasy-inspired style of storytelling with mainstream filmmaking. The perfect balance was struck between del Toro’s artistic flourishes and the obligatory action sequences, love stories, sidekicks, and so on which make the quintessential superhero movie. This combination appeals to both kinds of moviegoers — those looking for art and those looking for entertainment — and managed to make it to my list of favorite mainstream films. Thus, when I realized that the sequel was already out, I was very happy.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army, however, fails in the area that the first movie exceeded most. The perfect balance between art and formula does not exist here; the bar has swung rather substantially to the side of art, with distractingly stunning cinematography, a complex and sympathetic villain, new species strongly reminiscent of del Toro’s work on Pan’s Labyrinth, and new deep and powerful issues rooted in the main characters. The shallow entertainment of the superhero movie fades in the path of del Toro’s artistic genius, a fact that makes me enjoy the film much more personally but also makes me consider it far less of a success.

Picking up from the first film’s end, Hellboy II follows the eponymous devil-hero, played with great realism by Ron Perlman, and his returning partners Liz (Selma Blair) and Abe Sapien (Doug Jones) from the Department of Paranormal Research, led by the pompous, arrogant, humorous beaurocrat brought perfectly to life by the fabulous Jeffrey Tambor. This time, they must face a renegade elf prince, Nuada, wonderfully portrayed by Luke Goss, who wishes to take the earth back from mankind because of their destructive nature with a mythological mechanical army made of pure gold.

Delving into a mysterious, ancient elf court, as well as all the races that accompany such a world, seems to have been too much temptation for del Toro, who served as writer, director, and producer of the film. The fascinating depiction of the elves, tall, thin, and blonde as a mild throwback to Peter Jackson’s elves in Lord of the Rings yet with strange facial tattoos that grant them a far eerier edge, is only the tip of the iceberg of the new world opening up in Hellboy II — elf guardians in bulky black coats with faces reminiscent of toucans’ bills, a squat troll with skin like a tumor hiding precariously as a grandmother figure, a fallen angel with eyes on her wings instead of her face, an elemental god unleashed on a city block, a magnificent elf king turning to ivory in his death. Each scene is filled to the brim with del Toro’s unique fantasy style, one that sends shivers up my spine as a writer and one that fascinates me for weeks as an audience, both in the stunning cinematography and the strange concepts so perfectly brought to life through special effects.

However, the film gradually becomes tangled in this fantasty style, strangling what remains of its mainstream appeal. Though these touches of fantasy helped the first Hellboy to shine past its formula, in this film the formula seems to be drowning in the midst of them. Though I loved this movie far more than the previous one, engrossed in the new species and in the complex script, I watched others more inclined to mainstream films leave the room grumbling about how disappointing they found the movie.

With del Toro signed on to a number of mainstream films in the next few years, including the much-awaited movie based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, I worry that critics’ admiration for the director in the wake of films such as Pan’s Labyrinth may have pushed him too far into a comfortable position of indulging all of his artistic whims. Though I love the his art and though I love his indulgences, there is usually a specific place for those ideas to shine through, and that is rarely in a multi-million dollar production; instead, it typically belongs to independently funded projects, such as Pan’s Labyrinth, or in films that don’t carry an automatic expectation, such as superhero movies and sequels. del Toro is a fabulous director, and in the first Hellboy film he showed that he can merge his art with the commercial; yet in the second he showed that even he can make a mistake.

Alex Billington – FirstShowing.net Miramax and Guillermo del Toro will together produce a remak

Alex Billington – FirstShowing.net

Miramax and Guillermo del Toro will together produce a remake of the horror film Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark that first aired on TV in 1973. Comic book artist and writer Troy Nixey will make his feature directorial debut with the film. Del Toro himself and his writing partner Matthew Robbins (Mimic) will be adapting the screenplay for the remake. The original film was directed by John Newland and gained a cult following after its debut and on VHS. The story follows a young girl who is sent to live with her father and his new girlfriend, only to discover that sinister creatures live underneath the stairs. If I remember correctly, this is movie that scared the crap out of me as a kid and here we are remaking it!

Development on the film is only at the very early stages, as they haven’t begun any research on the monsters. However, Variety says that we can expect “an upscale creature feature along the lines of del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth, with an emphasis on distinctive characters in keeping with the Miramax slate.” And for those that saw Hellboy II, the creatures were the best part, so maybe that’s a good thing. Director Troy Nixey is the latest of Del Toro’s mentors to be given his first gig, along with Spanish filmmaker Juan Antonio Bayona who directed the highly praised thriller The Orphanage. “It has always been a dream of mine to work on a project with Guillermo, my favorite filmmaker,” Nixey said. “I had no idea it would be on my first one out. Miramax’s faith in me is everything a first-time director could ask for.”

Anyone who saw Orphanage will attest to the fact that Guillermo del Toro is as good of a producer as a filmmaker. I think he knows great talent when he sees it and I’m sure Nixey is the next talented filmmaker being given his big break. As for the film itself, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, let’s just hope it will scare the living crap out of me as it did back when I was a kid.

Michael Hancock,( Altered States, The Burning Bed, The Untouchables) was the makeup artist for the original 1973 version

MTV Generation Award

Ben Stiller

Obviously one thing is clear: Everyone that voted was a girl between the ages of 10 and 20. It’s a good thing that these awards are just fluff and fun to watch, because I literally disagreed with every winner. Like “The Climb”? Mily Cyrus does not have a good voice. There is a reason her dad was a one hit wonder. Also…best fight? Come on.

And, as far as best movie goes, Twilight only beats High School Musical 3. It doesn’t matter how you look at it. The Dark Knight, Iron Man, and Slumdog Millionaire all made more money, which means more people went to see it, and got higher ratings on rottentomatoes, which means more people liked it, and were nominated for more Oscars, which means it was well made. What do you guys think?

Here is the MTV Movie Awards Nominations list. We have it all marked out for you and give our opinions on how the kids are going to vote for this one. All you have to do is click the link and do some reading.

BEST MOVIE (voting stays live throughout the 2009 Movie Awards ceremony)
- The Dark Knight
- High School Musical 3: Senior Year
- Iron Man
- Slumdog Millionaire
- Twilight

InternetPopular’s Choice: We are going with The Dark Knight. It got snubbed at the Oscars and kids like to rebel against parental figures like the academy. The sleeper pick in this one will be Twilight which has a huge following that will have nothing better to do but to vote for their movie over and over again.

BEST FEMALE PERFORMANCE
- Angelina Jolie – Wanted
- Anne Hathaway – Bride Wars
- Kate Winslet – The Reader
- Kristen Stewart – Twilight
- Taraji P. Henson – The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

InternetPopular’s Choice: We are going with Anne Hathaway on this one. But why the hell was Taraji P. Henson up for nomination on this one? She had such a minor role in Benjamin Button that I had t look it up on IMDB just to remember who she was.

BEST MALE PERFORMANCE
- Christian Bale – The Dark Knight
- Robert Downey Jr. – Iron Man
- Shia LaBeouf – Eagle Eye
- Vin Diesel – Fast & Furious
- Zac Efron – High School Musical 3: Senior Year

InternetPopular’s Choice: Batman wins. Bale was by far the best performance out of anyone in this category and like we said before Batman was snubbed at the Oscars and MTV will pick up the ball where they dropped it and give The Dark Knight some awards.

BREAKTHROUGH PERFORMANCE FEMALE
- Amanda Seyfried – Mamma Mia!
- Ashley Tisdale – High School Musical 3: Senior Year
- Freida Pinto – Slumdog Millionaire
- Miley Cyrus – Hannah Montana: The Movie
- Vanessa Hudgens – High School Musical 3: Senior Year
- Kat Dennings – Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist

InternetPopular’s Choice: Miley Cyrus. MTV needs to get her on stage once to get viewers and this will be it.

BREAKTHROUGH PERFORMANCE MALE
- Robert Pattinson – Twilight
- Taylor Lautner – Twilight
- Ben Barnes – The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
- Dev Patel – Slumdog Millionaire
- Bobb’e J. Thompson – Role Models

InternetPopular’s Choice: Robert Pattinson will pick this one up out of default. The other actors are basically unknown and commodities. If Bobb’e J. Thompson wins though I will shit a brick though.

BEST COMEDIC PERFORMANCE
- Amy Poehler – Baby Mama
- Anna Faris – The House Bunny
- James Franco – Pineapple Express
- Jim Carrey – Yes Man
- Steve Carell – Get Smart

InternetPopular’s Choice: We want James Franco to take this award for his under appreciated role in Pineapple Express but we are pretty sure Steve Carell is going to win this one. His comedy is accepted across the board which makes him a lead horse in this race.

BEST VILLAIN
- Derek Mears – Friday The 13th
- Dwayne Johnson – Get Smart
- Heath Ledger – The Dark Knight
- Johnathon Schaech – Prom Night
- Luke Goss – Hellboy II: The Golden Army

InternetPopular’s Choice: Heath Ledger for the Joker. Hands down, no questions asked.

BEST FIGHT
-Anne Hathaway vs. Kate Hudson – Bride Wars
-Christian Bale vs. Heath Ledger – The Dark Knight
-Ron Perlman vs. Luke Goss – Hellboy II: The Golden Army
-Robert Pattinson vs. Cam Gigandet – Twilight
-Seth Rogen and James Franco vs. Danny McBride – Pineapple Express
InternetPopular’s Choice: Seth Rogen and James Franco vs. Danny McBride. That fight was awesome and deserves to win. Sleeper pick might be the Dark Knight which will be looking to clean up at these awards.

BEST KISS
- Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy – Wanted
- Freida Pinto and Dev Patel – Slumdog Millionaire
- James Franco and Sean Penn – Milk
- Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson – Twilight
- Paul Rudd and Thomas Lennon – I Love You, Man
- Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron – High School Musical 3: Senior Year

InternetPopular’s Choice: Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson will most likely win this award. Twilight is all about kissing and love and junk like that.

BEST WTF MOMENT (New Category)
- Amy Poehler – Baby Mama, Peeing In the Sink
- Angelina Jolie – Wanted, Curved Bullet Kill
- Ayush Mahesh Khedekar – Slumdog Millionaire, Jumping in the Poop Shed
- Ben Stiller – Tropic Thunder, Tasting the Decapitated Head
- Jason Segel and Kristen Bell – Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Naked Break-Up

InternetPopular’s Choice: Jason Segel and Kristen Bell’s naked break-up scene from Forgetting Sarah Marshall was a huge What The Fuck. If that doesn’t win then I could see Amy Poehler peeing in the sink taking it.

BEST SONG FROM A MOVIE (New Category)
- “Jai Ho” – AR Raham, Slumdog Millionaire
- “The Wrestler” – Bruce Springsteen, The Wrestler
- “The Climb” – Miley Cyrus, Hannah Montana: The Movie
- “Decode” – Paramore, Twilight

InternetPopular’s Choice: The Twilight soundtrack was huge so Paramore is probably going to pick this one up by the end of the night. And Bruce Springsteen in this group sticks out like a sore thumb btw.

I happened to run into a sneak preview of this movie, it doesnt release in Theatres until April 24th. Im assuming after watching this movie that it may never release and may go straight to DVD. Starring Thomas Jane, Ron Perlman, Devon Aoki, and John Malkovich for 10 minutes.

This was probably the biggest piece of shit Ive seen in a few years. Tom Jane, used to be one of my not so hated actors, but now he is on the list. I liked him in DreamCatcher, and the first Punisher(yes I liked it.) But this movie really just sucked hard!

A Post Apoctalyptic War between the continents which are all controlled by corporations is blown and all of the sudden they accidentally open a vault to a machine where the apocolypse started. The machine turns people into Mutants…

So Tom Jane, a Fat Mexican, Hell Boy, a Mute Priestess, a Nazi, an 2 Asians, and a Black British guy all decide to save the day and go into the pit to blow up the machine with a magic book and a locket or some garbage.

It was seriously just so horrible I dont know why Im even writing about it, maybe just to warn people not to waste their time. I saw the preview and thought it looked decent but was sorely mistaken. The filming was even horrible, it was too dark the entire movie and hard to make things out even in HD on a huge screen.

Stay away, and if you see Thomas Jane in the streets..Tell Him To STOP MAKING MOVIES..Maybe Try Broadway.

I watched Hellboy II last night. If you haven’t seen it, do so. It’s pretty good. Particularly interesting is the villain, Prince Nuada: he’s not evil, he’s not intimidating, and he actually means well. Plus, he’s a badass elf warrior, and badass elf warriors never get old.

Just look at Drizzt Do’Urden, trademark character of fantasy author R.A. Salvatore. I first read The Crystal Shard trilogy in college, when I was supposed to be reading my assigned texts for my English classes. I haven’t been able to get much into any other Drizzt books since, but those three really grabbed me. They were heroic fantasy of the finest stock.

Of course, the whole time I was reading those books I was thinking “Man, Drizzt would make an awesome video game character.” I still can’t help but think that. Sure, he’s cameo’d in a few games, but I want to see one where he flows freely with twin blades, executing intricate combos against waves of enemies. Imagine a mixture of Prince of Persia and God of War and you have an idea of what I’m getting at, or maybe a Ninja Gaiden II that’s less over-the-top with gore and more tactics-based than, well, utterly ridiculous. A game with brutal combat wherein Drizzt moves like Prince Nuada from Hellboy II; I would buy the Overpriced Collector’s Edition of that one.

So come on Some Enterprising Developer/Designer Team: get on it.

In spirit of Watchmen coming out, and The Dark Knight last year, I really got to thinking about the best comic book adaptations of all time. These films got points on storylines, characters, casting, and how faithful they were to the source material. Also if I feel they ruined the comic they aren’t on this list. For example you will notice no Spider-Man movies are on this. They stories were gay, the third one was one of the worst movies of the decade, and I don’t like the choice for Peter Parker, in the comics hes jacked and the man. Anyways… Here are my top 10 favorite comic book film adaptations of all time.

10. Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008)

I liked this movie and I thought it was better than the first. The makeup was really sick (del Toro’s monsters always look awesome). The plot was very solid and the fighting was sick. It really captured the feeling of the comic.

Best Actor: Ron Perlman as Hellboy

Movie Rating: 7/10

9. Constantine (2005)

Based on the comic book series “Hellblazer” from Vertigo Comics, this movie is a great adaptation. Keanu plays a perfect John Constantine and the casting was perfect. I also should add this is one of the best portrayals of Satan ever in film. This was a dark movie that matched Hellblazer and it liked this movie the first time I saw it before knowing it was a comic.

Best Actor: Keanu Reeves as John Constantine

Movie Rating: 7/10

8. Superman: The Movie (1978)

One of the first superhero films ever made, and it paved the way for the rest of them. Even tho it was in the 70’s the special effects are not that bad. The acting in this film was really good. Reeve was a perfect Superman and Gene Hackman was a pretty good Lex Luthor (although I think Kevin Spacey trumped him. Why is this only #8? Because in this list I’m not giving brownie points just for being a classic.

Best Actor: Christopher Reeve as Superman/Kal-El/Clark Kent

Movie Rating: 7/10

7. Batman Forever (1995)

The first of many Batman films on this list. Why? Because Batman is the greatest superhero of all time, plus these movies are all good. This one is the lowest because its not really like the comic but they still did a good job. There is a really good cast and the plot is awesome (mainly because you can do so much with The Riddler). Val Kilmer was actually not that bad as Batman and Tommy Lee Jones and Jim Carrey were hilarious. This movie has high entertainment value and is a good watch.

Best Actor: Jim Carrey as The Riddler/Edward Nygma

Movie Rating: 7/10

6. X2: X-Men United (2003)

The best X-Men movie to date, although I think “Wolverine” will have something to say about it. In this film the cast was much more comfortable than the first and the story line was the best out of the 3. Also, Wolverine was given the chance to go berserk in this.. and it was awesome. X-Men was always one of my favorite comics and this movie did a great job with it.

Best Actor: Hugh Jackman as Wolverine/Logan

Movie Rating: 8/10

5. Iron Man (2008)

This movie reminded us why we fell in love with superheroes: they are fun. This movie was very good, and I think Robert Downey Jr. even added to the character of Tony Stark. He was hilarious, and a good actor as always. Great cast, great plot, and loyal to the comics. This is what makes a great film adaptation. I can’t wait for the sequel, and also for the Avengers film. Clearly one of the best superhero films of the past decade.

Best Actor: Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man/Tony Stark

Movie Rating: 8/10

4. Batman (1989)

Michael Keaton as Batman and Jack Nicholson as the Joker, yeah that pretty much means awesome. This movie was really close to the comics and was very very very entertaining. Jack vs Ledger for the best Joker? Impossible. They were too different. Jack’s Joker was just pure entertainment as opposed to Ledger’s dark and intense take on the Villain. Keaton was also amazing as the Caped Crusader. This movie had a great plot and I always watch when its on TV.

Best Actor: (tie) Michael Keaton as Batman/Bruce Wayne

Jack Nicholson as The Joker/Jack Napier

Movie Rating: 8/10

3. Batman Begins (2005)

When I saw this movie for the first time I said “This is what superhero movies needed.” I felt like this was straight off the pages of Robert Kane’s comic books. This movie showed the most realistic version of Batman yet. Christian Bale played a perfect real world Batman and this movie was all around amazing. Oh, except for the boring crap before he became Batman. Although it was needed… it was really boring. However, once it got back to Gotham City it was so good it made the beginning very much worth it (thats the only reason this movies not a 10). Also, thank god someone put Scarecrow and Ra’s al Ghul in a Batman movie. Nolan should have won an award for his take on the Batman universe.

Best Actor: Christian Bale as Batman/Bruce Wayne

Movie Rating: 9/10

2. Watchmen (2009)

If you really want a review, go read the one that I JUST wrote. Anyways this was exactly like the graphic novel and was an awesome movie. I will probably see it one more time in theaters. The casting in this movie was AMAZING, the fighting was AWESOME, and they did a really good job taking the plot to the silver screen.

Best Actor: Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach/Walter Kovacs

Movie Rating: 9/10

1. The Dark Knight (2008)

THE PERFECT COMIC BOOK FILM. This was the best thing to ever happen to superhero movies. Bale was back with an ever better performance showing the flaws of Batman and this might be the performance making him better than Keaton. Heath Ledger as the Joker? Greatest film villain of all time. Aaron Eckhart was also perfect, and Gordan was casted perfectly again. Fuck it, this is the best cast ever. Phenomenal story, perfect adaptation, and great action make this movie perfect. Never mind the powerful (to say the least) performance of Ledger. This is hands down the best comic book film adaptation of all time.

Best Actor: Heath Ledger as The Joker

Movie Rating: 10/10

Well there is it… if you dont like it than your an idiot.

Until Next Time, OBALLER.
