I wasn’t so sure I could even make it past the title of this one, folks. It’s hard to cleverly squeeze four podcast titles into a single line. This week brings another double dose of the podcast goodness because of our out-of-town trip last week. With that, let’s get on with it.

Last Tuesday we got into the Large Hadron Collider. You may have heard about this humongous machine that lives underground in Europe. Pretty soon, the scientists that operate the LHC are hoping to juice it up to full speed and slam some particles together in order to simulate the moments directly after the big bang. Pretty heady stuff indeed and we did mess some stuff up on the physics front. First and foremost, I think we said they were beams of light and this isn’t quite right. They are particles, so you stop the email corrections!

Last Thursday was a show on the Hells Angels. As tremendous squares, we managed to do a decent job with this one and have heard some good stories from folks who know some real Hells Angels. Interesting factoid on this one — Hells Angels is a legitimate corpration and their insignia and name are both trademarked. This means they can sue, say Disney for say, a horrible movie like Wild Hogs. We also talked a little about the famous incident at the Rolling Stones concert in Altamont.

This week we hit on narco states and kleptomania. The narco states show made me a little wary about traveling to certain parts of Central America and Africa any time soon. There are some sad things going on there as a result of the massive drug trade and the puppet governments that allow it to happen.

Yesterday we closed out the week with a little show on kleptomania. We learned that it is indeed an actual compulsive mental disorder that may have its roots in chemical defects in the brain. Not sure if this is the case with Winona Ryder, but Josh was severely dismayed to know that Ryder is a stage name.

So let’s hear from you, folks. Who out there has a good inside story here about one of these four juicy topics? Surely someone out there is a Hells Angel or has kleptomania, right?

I learned that what to do when you get out of college is a movie/tv/play/whatever idea that is overdone.  People just try to mask the banality of the idea with dick jokes in one direction and witty banter spoken by people who always wear tweed jackets in another.  They always have a degree in something that gets them on the path to teaching high school or writing a shitty book before being reduced to teaching high school.  And don’t think you can avoid this bullshit plot device by writing an uplifting story about college grooming success because your movie will suck unless someone’s expectations are not met and strife ensues.

I learned that Hunter S Thompson jumped into the trunk of a car and closed the lid during a fight big brawl the Hell’s Angels were having and that was when they started thinking of him as a pussy.  He also got the shit kicked out of him, thus ending his year with the biker gang.  Apparently one of the members kicked his dog and Thompson said, something about how assholes hit their mother and kick their dog. On the other hand, he was a journalist and not a burly biker and he always seemed to get himself into trouble with other people wanting to kick his ass.  This might have been the reason he traveled around armed with a few weapons at all times.

I finally learned that Santa is not real and is a secular role model for the olden day slaves of 19th century New York.  Hooray Santa

I learned for the millionth time that cell phone’s don’t cause cancer.  Seriously though, end of story

I learned that the Chinese still support Iran, not because they need their oil, but because they probably see sanctions as a stepping stone to international pressure against themselves.  OH, and Obama is powerless against Israel attacking Iran.  What is all that money for anyway?  Aren’t we overlords there?

I learned our collective GayDar is strong.  50 milliseconds is all we need

I learned that Sexting needs more support.  Our children are dying due to lack of understand by adults of how kids in this technological age are playing “doctor”.

I learned that I am sick of the term “fatally wounded”.  The woman was shot dead

I learned about one of the sickest things a person can do.  Warning:  It involves a mostly developed fetus and christmas

I learned that poor kids are prescribed anti-psychotic drugs more often then their middle class counterparts with the same symptoms.  It seems that its cheaper and easier to manage then counseling sessions.  This despite being the most expensive type of drug for Medicaid. Another place for health reform

I also learned that shit is so bad in the US that the states are letting people in droves out of the prisons, but once they get out, the ex cons can’t find work and would prefer to go back to their cell where food and shelter is provided. This is not working.

Animal Collective’s new EP, “Fall Be Kind”, and STS9’s new full length, “Ad Explorata”, are really making life sound good right now. I highly recommend playing both often, as I will during my travels this break.

I need to purchase HST’s Hells Angels for my excursion to San Francisco.

Sea of Dreams want’s LostinSound to do a full write up with an interview with the head of production. I believe we have been given the go ahead to interview any of the artists at the event as well. Um, fucking sweet sauce.

I’ll be missing Dizzy’s going away Shpongleextravaganza at 20 Pratt this Friday, sadness will ensue as he and Nallers will not be around for the spring semester. As Rob Uslan said today(post-motorbike), “Dude i love this place, its the perfect combination of having friends in high places and high friends in places”.

I must purchase a bigger space heater for my cave. It is imperative that we get a microwave at this house. I need to stop getting sick every two weeks, insert exercise and moderate healthlyness.

One semester left before i get my BA in Journalism, and the wild rumpus begins….

I don’t think I’d mess with this guy. He appeared on a wall in the East Village the other day. He’s quite the fearsome lookin beastie there. In fall 2008 I sublet a furnished apartment from a twenty-something who left Chicago for a culinary internship in San Francisco for six months. She left all her furniture, including her extensive record, movie and book collections.

I picked up Hunter S. Thompson’s Hell’s Angels from the bookshelf shortly after I moved in. It had apparently been stolen from a library at some point in its life, as evidenced by the bar-code and stamps on the front cover.

At some point I lost the book and never finished reading it. I figured it had to be somewhere in the apartment, so I didn’t bother to replace it when I moved in March 2009.

I lived in the next apartment, a studio in Ravenswood, until I decided to take this reporting job in Wyoming in July 2009. Somehow after I moved to Pinedale this same Hell’s Angels book showed up again. How? I have no clue.

About six weeks ago I picked it up again to read it and discovered some strange things. First of all, the bookmark was an index card with directions to my friend Marcus’s house.

Every once in a while I’m struck with a bout of homesickness for any one of the places I’ve lived. At that moment I happened to be homesick for Chicago and remembered going to his house last fall to meet the Chicagoist.com crew for the first time.

As I started to mope, I noticed something stranger. The library sticker on the front cover—

Teton County Library??

Somehow this book traveled from Chicago to Wyoming through me.  It sneaked by me through two apartment changes and one vehicle change.

Stranger yet, the previous owner of the book hailed from Florida, so who knows how it came to be in Chicago in the first place.

The book was last checked out in 2003, so after a six-year journey, I will return it to its original home in Jackson. Maybe they’ll give me a reward? Or maybe they’ll try to stick me with six years of overdue fines?

You might be able to work out from the title/quote that I watched The Silence of the Lambs today. This is one of my favourite movies and one of my favourite books. I’d say I prefer the books, but the acting in the movies is so brilliant. I also noticed for the first time how good the filming is in “Lambs,” it’s very intense and overwhelming, a lot of extreme close-ups and the actors look directly at the camera a lot. It’s intimidating, which fits in perfectly in a world so filled with highly intelligent, dangerous characters who are always watching, not missing a thing.

Meanwhile, I’m listening to Virgin Black, an amazing Australian band, from Adelaide I think. Don’t mind the wank, they really are amazing, they just like to dress up and give themselves silly names, etc. I saw them live last time Opeth came down, they sounded very good but I didn’t like their performance, if that makes sense. Regardless, I recommend them, they’re very powerful, crushing, they use the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and choirs to back up the amazing operatic lead vocalist who also growls very well. So, take a listen some time.

I haven’t watched any more Californication yet tonight, I doubt I will. What day is it? Saturday. Sunday morning, to be more specific, but whatever. I’ll likely watch Hannibal tomorrow, then Red Dragon the day after. I won’t watch Hannibal Rising since it’s a shit of a film and I don’t care for the book at all either. I’m of the opinion that Hannibal and Hannibal Rising delved way way way too deeply into Hannibal’s character and history and removed all of the strength and mystery from the character. (spoilers) Maybe I’m being immature or something, but I don’t want to see  Hannibal dropping to his knees and being breastfed by Clarice; not that the image is something I reject for itself, it just seems like a complete simplification of the character. He has always been set up as something that cannot be defined, a mind that cannot be cracked, he was called a monster because no other name would fit. But no, turns out his mummy didn’t breastfeed him as a child or something. All the stuff with his sister is interesting, the warcrimes and everything intrigue me greatly, but I don’t want to know why Hannibal is how he is, he is supposed to be uncrackable, this unnattainable mind, but we are told everything and all mystery is gone. (end of spoilers)

Anyway, it is still an amazingly written, complex, clever, powerful series that has influenced me a great deal.

Speaking of influences, I picked up a copy of Hell’s Angels and Kingdom of Fear, both by Hunter S Thompson. I won’t read them until after Christmas, as I’m still getting through Fear and Loathing in America and I’d also like something to read when I go away to the USA for a few months after Boxing Day some time. I’ll be staying with a friend of mine over there, which should be good. He lives in Colorado somewhere, I’m not great with geography, but he has a nice little place out in the woods for a hangout. It’s generally a relaxing time, I went there last time and there was a lot of sitting, talking, bike riding, shooting, smoking, drinking, reading, sleeping, the good things in life.

Bikers and bike culture have been instrumental to what is cool in the world of style since the first piston pumped and the first knitted sweater was raced in. Not that Hell’s Angels are the most stylish of bikers but this set of shots from Bill Ray are some of the coolest Angels I’ve seen. Biking with a stobey like you just don’t care and being frisked by the fuzz (who really just want to check out your rather dapper hat), very cool.

Six Hells Angels motorcycle club locations were raided today in an investigation of a brawl that left two people with stab wounds at a Las Vegas wedding chapel nearly a year ago, police said. 

There were no confrontations or injuries when heavily armed police SWAT and intelligence unit investigators served warrants at dawn at sites that included a Hells Angels clubhouse about five miles northwest of downtown Las Vegas, police Lt. Dave Logue said. 

Homes in Las Vegas and Henderson, Nevada also were searched. 

“It involves the wedding chapel stabbings as well as another current investigation regarding our local Hells Angels club,” Logue said. “We were looking for specific items … including business records.” 

No arrests were made and the sealed warrants were not released. 

KLAS-TV in Las Vegas showed a broken front door and window at a white, two-story Hells Angels clubhouse marked with the letters “HAMC” and “Sin City.” SWAT officers pushed through a red garage door, but it was not clear if anyone was in the building. 

A lawyer who represented the Hells Angels in the past did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment. 

The raid came 11 months after authorities reported two people were stabbed in a brawl between rival motorcycle gang members at the downtown Special Memory Wedding Chapel. Officials said the violence erupted when two weddings were merely booked at the same time. 

Police said one of the injured men identified himself as a member of the Mongols motorcycle club and said his assailants were Hells Angels. 

A 2002 casino brawl between Hells Angels and Mongols left three dead and dozens injured, disrupting the annual Laughlin River Run motorcycle rally.

Seven Hells Angels members pleaded guilty to federal and state charges in that confrontation. 

Six Mongols members also pleaded guilty in November 2007 to various state felony charges in the case but avoided trial in state court on charges including murder, attempted murder and conspiracy.

The Altamont Free Concert was held in 1969 at the Altamont Speedway in Northern California. The festival included many famous rock acts with the Rolling Stones performing as headliners. The Hell’s Angels were hired as security, and throughout the day, the biker gang became increasingly violent with fans. During the Rolling Stones’ set, a member of the Hell’s Angels killed a fan who they thought was brandishing a gun. The concert, along with the accompanying violence and killing, were shown in the Rolling Stones documentary Gimme Shelter.

Han jobbar åt ATF som under cover agent och får i uppdrag att infiltrera Hells Angels, de rödvita, åtta-ettorna. I sin strävan att bli en Hells Angel försummar han sig själv och sin familj. I två år jobbar han med fallet och “Bird” svävar hela tiden i livsfara.

En mot hundra – Jag infiltrerade Hells Angels är en sann historia, Jay Dobyn’s självbiografi. Den är spännande och gripande. Jag tycker att den var bäst i början och mitten, mot slutet blev den lite trög, inte dålig alls men trög. Jag rekommenderar boken till alla. Jag tror att det är viktigt att man vet om vilka Hells Angels är på riktigt, något som denna boken berättar. Jay Dobyns skriver väldigt bra och man känner hela tiden olika saker, allt från sympati till hat till obehag.

Dies ist eine US Serie, die von dem US-Sender FX produziert wird. Im Mittelpunkt der Serie steht Clay Morrow (Ron “Hellboy” Perlman), der Mitglied einer Motorrad Gang im San Francisco Bay Gebiet ist. Clay entstammt dabei einer Dynastie von Verbrechern und war somit schon immer für ein Leben im Untergrund bestimmt. Der größere Handlungsbogen spannt sich darum, ob es ihm gelingt, dieses Leben, das einzige was er kennt, abzustreifen.

Auf die Serie bin ich gekommen, als mein Lokaler DVD-Store vor kurzem die Vorgängerserie „The Shield“ und die erste Staffel von „Sons of Anarchy“ bewarb (Als US-Import). Vorher kannte ich ehrlich gesagt weder eine der beiden Serien noch den Sender FX. Eine echte Neuentdeckung in jeder Hinsicht für mich. Auf Serienjunkies.de kommt Sons of Anarchy auf Platz 261 der Beliebtheitsskala womit es ganz klar zu den unbekannteren Serien gehört.

Ende der 90´ziger gab es im Orange County (Kalifornien) einen großen Rocker Krieg und auch heute, bei uns in Deutschland kommt das Thema immer mal wieder hoch, zumindest bei Spiegel TV. Das dürfte wohl auch der Grund sein, warum ich mich für die Serie entschieden hab.

An dieser Stelle mache ich einmal das Fazit am Anfang und sage, dass die Pilot Folge eigentlich nichts besonderes ist. Sex and Crime und ein Hauch von Intrige wehen die Serie, ohne Sie wirklich voranzubringen, fast wieder aus. Es hat mich also nicht so vom Hocker gerissen.

Zu Gute halten möchte ich der Serie drei Dinge: Erstens, Pilotfolgen fallen  immer ein wenig anders aus, als die spätere Serie.  Zweitens, sind die Kommentare in anderen Blogs zu der Serie durchweg positiv ausgefallen. Drittens, finden sich bei YouTube viele Ausschnitte aus Serie in der der Audiotrack gerippt wurde. Die Musik scheint also den Geschmack der Masse zu treffen.

Bleibt als Letztes zu sagen, dass in den USA bereits die zweite Staffel gesendet wird und eine dritte wohl schon in der Mache sein soll. Die Amis haben Gefallen an der Serie gefunden.

Im Mittelpunkt der Serie steht ein Motorrad Club namens “Sons of Anarchy” in der fiktiven Stadt Charming. Während sie am Tag ganz normalen und gutbürgerlichen Arbeiten nachgehen, gehens sie nachts und am Wochenende ihrer kriminellen Passion nach. Hauptsächlich heißt das: Verkaufen von Waffen an rivalisierende Gangs. Jack, der Hauptdarsteller der Serie (Charlie Hunnam), ist Mitte oder Ende zwanzig und in dem Club aufgewachsen. Sein Vater hat den Club gegründet und sein Stiefvater ist zurzeit der President des Clubs. Seine Mutter Jenna, übrigens der wohl stärkste Charakter in der Serie, wird von Katey Sagal gespielt, trat schon als Al Bundy’s Ehefrau Peggy auf. Für so eine gute Schauspielerin hätte ich sie dann doch nicht gehalten.

In 1959, the Chosen Few MC officially formed out in LA on the cusp of the chaotic 60s.  As they tell it — “The 60s was a hell of a time. With the Civil Rights Movement, The Viet Nam War, Flower Power & Free Love. Sex, Drugs, and  Rock & Roll. Also the Crazy World of the Outlaw Bikers.”

If this sounds as foreign to you as it did to me, a kid who grew up in the world of white biker culture – well, consider the cultural stereotypes around bikers.

From the Chosen Few history–

“When you talk of the Outlaw Bikers you automatically think of ‘Them Crazy White Boys’ doing what a lot of folk wish they could do. Live Life Like You Want & F*ck You And Your Rules. Well Guess What? There was some crazy Black bikers who felt the fame way, and didn’t give a F*ck. Thus was born the Black Outlaw Bikers ! ”

Black motorcycle clubs emerged throughout Cali in the 50s & 60s, and fought against racism and stereotypes of the day for their right to live the outlaw biker lifestyle — like the East Bay Dragons, Fresco Rattlers, Outlaw Vagabonds, Defiant Ones; down South in LA were the Choppers, Soul Brothers & of course, the Chosen Few.

The first White boy to come to the Chosen Few MC was “White Boy Art.” He came around 1960, followed by “White Boy Tom”. Soon we started to attract other White outlaw riders that wanted to join us. The Chosen Few became a multi-racial MC with chapters that were, all Black, all White, half White and half Mexican, half Black and half White, all Mexican, half Mexican and half Indian, a few Asians & one Iranian dude.

Our “Take None, Give None” 1%er diamond was given to us by “69 Jim” who was a 5 foot 6 inch radical Mexican. This patch has stood the test of time. The club may have started out Black, but our White brothers took us head-on into the outlaw biker world. The White clubs knew about the Chosen Few MC. They knew it was a Black club. Then they saw the White brothers flying the same patch as the Blacks — The Sh*t Hit The Fan.

The White Brothers Didn’t Give A Sh*t. They fought for there place in the outlaw biker world & flew the Chosen Few colors proudly. The White bro’s brought a true brotherhood to the club. The Chosen Few was the 1st fully integrated outlaw biker MC.  It soon became well known all around by the other clubs that — “In Black & White, We Really Had Might.”

Nachdem immer offensichtlicher wird, dass die Bundesliga-Teams mit der internationalen Spitzengruppe nicht mehr mithalten können, kam diese Nachricht wie ein Befreiungsschlag. Der Kampf zwischen Hells Angels und Bandidos wird immer brutaler und könnte bald in einem “Krieg” eskalieren. Hurra!

Wie lange haben die deutschen Kulturschaffenden darauf gewartet! Endlich gibt es auch hierzulande eine Gewaltkultur die den internationalen Vergleich nicht zu scheuen braucht. Filme wie “Bang Boom Bang” mit ihren Kleinkriminellengeschichten haben uns viel zu lange gelangweilt. “Chiko” war ein großartiger Film, aber leider wenig glaubhaft.

Neidisch blickten wir über den Atlantik. Keine Kultur hat eine lebendigere kriminelle Subgesellschaft hervorgebracht. In den USA hat Gewalt sogar eine äußerst spannende Geschichte. Angefangen mit den Cowboy und Sheriff geschichten, über Al Capone im Chicago der 20er Jahre und etliche weitere Mafiageschichten oder Kämpfe zwischen rivalisierenden Einwanderergruppen im New York der Jahrhundertwende (“Gangs of New York”).

Auch heute noch bietet die amerikanische Gesellschaft eine breite Fülle an möglichen Handlungsorten eines guten Gangsterfilms. Kriminelle und korrupte Cops (“Departed”; “Training Day”), schwarze und asiatische Gangs in LA (“Street Kings”), kubanische Drogenbarone in Miami (“Scarface”)… die Liste ist fast endlos.

Endlich also, können auch die deutschen Filmemacher Inspiration aus der Realität ziehen und Deutschland wird als Handlungsort für Gangsterfilme glaubhaft. Auch hier muss man sich nicht unbedingt auf die Rockerbanden beschränken. Meister Sun Tsu schreibt in der Kunst des Krieges: „Jene, die sich als erste am Schlachtfeld einfinden und den Gegner erwarten, sind entspannt; jene, die als letzte am Schlachtfeld eintreffen und sich übereilt in den Kampf stürzen, verausgaben sich.“

 Ich weiß nicht, ob hier alles nach Sun Tsus Plan läuft. Als ich am Montag abend die Charlottenstraße passiere, bietet sich mir ein beunruhigendes Bild. Vor ihrem Headquarter ist ein 30, 40 Mann starker Trupp Bandidos aufgezogen, einige 1%er, außerdem Prospects, Supporter. Harte Blicke. Stumme Umarmungen, wenn ein neuer Brother eintrifft. Die Männer sind angespannt, ernst, nüchtern, konzentriert lehnen sie an der Hauswand. Wachsam. Kein Alkohol. Ihnen gegenüber, kaum eine Armeslänge entfernt auf dem Bürgersteig SEKler in schwarzer Kampfmontur, Maschinenpistolen im Anschlag, den Lauf etwa in Kniehöhe der Bandidos zielend. Jetzt, zwei Tage nach dem Gewaltausbruch, scheinen sie sich stark genug zu fühlen. Sie stehen breitbeinig und grinsen. Tatüü, ta daa: Die Staatsgewalt ist auch schon da. Zwei Tage zu spät, aber mit wiedergewonnenem Selbstbewusstsein und frischen Hosen. Schwer zu sagen, was das SEK jetzt hier gegen wen verteidigt.

Die Tür zum Fat Mexican ist weit offen. Rock der härteren Gangart ist von drinnen zu hören. Man demonstriert: Soo schlimm waren die Verwüstungen durch den Hell’s Angels-Überfall nun auch wieder nicht. Man wechselt harte Blicke. I’ll gonna kill ya, versprechen sie. Sure I’ll do, no kiddin’! Manche dieser Blicke wirken dunkler und bedrohlicher als das dunkle Auge im Lauf der MP. Noch hat die Nacht nicht begonnen.

Echt wahr: Grad hatte ich mir genügend Mut angespart, mal die Einladung anzunehmen und meine Nachbarn zu besuchen. Was soll schon passieren, dachte ich. Zwar bin ich nur Drahtesel-Biker, aber ich bin andererseits auch weder Bordell-Kunde, noch brauch ich derzeit eine Waffe, und meine Drogen gibt’s legal im Fachhandel. Ich muß also heikle Dinge gar nicht ansprechen und kann in Ruhe die neue, heiße Kaffeemaschine testen, die es im Fat Mexican gibt.

Aber nix ist, bzw. der Himmel über der Hood ist schon wieder blaulicht-beleuchtet und es riecht nach Street Fightin’ Men. Das Fat Mexican hatte bereits „Besuch“ – weniger friedlichen und freundlichen, nämlich die Hell’s Angels. Zwischen dem Großbordell „Laufhaus 26“ und dem Bandido Place  gabs die nächste Runde Rockerkrieg. Baseballschläger, Dachlatten, Totschläger, Tränengas-Kartuschen, Molotow-Cocktails. Das Vereinsheim der Bandidos wurde verwüstet. Wenigstens waren diesmal keine Todesopfer zu beklagen. Trotzdem, die Lage ist angespannt.

Was mich angeht, ich bin nicht Quentin Tarantino, ich bin von Gewalt nicht unbedingt fasziniert, aber entgangen ist mir nicht, daß die Rocker zig mal besser ausgerüstet, effizienter organisiert und rascher vor Ort waren, als die Polizei, deren SEK-Kräfte gerade noch rechtzeitig eintrafen, um sich sagen zu lassen, sie mögen sich heraushalten. Ein Polizeisprecher dazu: „Das haben wir denn auch getan“.

Der Presse entnehme ich, an einem durchschnittlichen Samstagabend hätte man in ganz Duisburg rund 20 Streifenwagen im Einsatz. Die MCs mobilisieren, wenn’s  sein muß, innerhalb von 30 Minuten zwei-, dreihundert motorisierte Kräfte. Mir gibt das zu denken.

Schläge, Schüsse und eine Granate: In NRW eskaliert die Gewalt zwischen den verfeindeten Hells Angels und Bandidos. Die jüngste Attacke zeigt, wie organisiert die Rocker vorgehen und wie hilflos die Polizei bisweilen zusehen muss.

Hamburg – Am Anfang war ein Einsatz, von dem es viele gibt in einer Samstagnacht und einer Stadt wie Duisburg. Um 21.10 Uhr erreicht die Polizei ein Notruf aus der Vulkanstraße 26, einem Laufhaus im Rotlichtviertel, das von den Hells Angels kontrolliert wird. Von “Randalierern” ist in den ersten Funksprüchen die Rede, ein Streifenwagen jagt los.
