Well there certainly is a winter wonderland covering most of Virginia right now!!!

It started yesterday around 2:30pm…and by 3pm the roads were nasty to say the least. Therefore, I’m stuck here. *Here being…my new home, not where I want to be which is home with Tracy and Carly an hour away*

At 7pm it looked like this outside.

So much snow!!!!

And by this morning….

See that? There's usually a step DOWN on to the deck...not so much anymore.

So…I sit. And wait.

However this nice person did come by!

<img title="I don't know your name, TractorMan, but I sure do love you!!! Thanks for diggin my car out!" src="http://i539.photobucket.com/albums/ff354/PinkDsnyPrncess/To%20The%20Blog/PC190061.jpg" alt="I don't know your name, TractorMan, but I sure do love you!!!

So, I guess we should go in to it.

The Work Week:

Well, technically I think it’s been 2 weeks…but they were a blur. Main points were the last few days before break. The kids were NUTS and they all seemed to think rules should fly out the window. I made several of them quiet upset by still enforcing all the rules and writing them up for infractions.

Too bad. So sad. Fairness sucks.

At school for the last two weeks there has been a plethora of goodies and junk. Biscuit breakfasts, Holiday lunches, cookies, cakes, candies as far as the eye can see. And I packed on about 5lbs because of it. Or rather because of my lack of self-control. *glare* But let me tell you something, you just can’t say no to a cookie you didn’t have to bake!

So that leads us nicely in to….

The Workout Week:

Well, the good news is I ran some!!! The Jingle Bell Run was last weekend and I ran the WHOLE thing which was my goal considering I only ran once the week before it, and barely 2 miles for that one. So I’m proud that I ran it, and mom came VERY close to placing in her age group…the competition is steep at that race with nearly 1500 participants!

Here are some highlights!

Here we are...getting ready to go. Can you spot us???

<img title="It's a train, it's faster than a....no. It's not fast. It's just me and dad being less than great at photography. Love him anyway!" src="http://i539.photobucket.com/albums/ff354/PinkDsnyPrncess/To%20The%20Blog/PC110014.jpg" alt="It's a train, it's faster than a....no. It's not fast. It's not fast. It's just me and dad being less than great at photography. Love him anyway!

"I'm bored, it's cold, and let's hurry this thing up!!!" says Dad.

"Silly dad, they have panera catering and I planned for this. HA!"

So I didn’t come close to placing, but mom probably got 4th in her AG. I should check these things. But that’s ok. I ran.

Then this week I ran…once I think? I can’t remember. But I need to get back on the training wagon like woah. I’ve been looking at several halfs and fulls for spring. It’s time to kick it in to gear once and for all!!!

Let’s hope I can start tomorrow…the snow is making it kind of impossible for today.

The Knitting Week:

Um…I packed all my projects to take home and work on? That….is where the knitting starts and ends.

OH! But I did enter a knitting-related contest over on Meghan’s blog/podcast!!! *fingers crossed*

Other than that…no news.

Favorite:

I’m gonna steal the favorite that I used for Meghan’s contest.

This week’s favorite thing is holiday traditions!!! My personal favorite is The Official Uncle Jimmy Christmas Present.

Uncle Jimmy and dad always exchange tool-type items. Dad is a retired professor turned contractor, and Jimmy does excavation. Hence the tools.

So every year at Christmas, dad gets Jimmy a present, and I am in charge of wrapping it. Originally, it was just normal, boring wrapping…but several years ago, Jimmy decided to give me a gag-gift for Christmas. Then the next year it was a present wrapped in layers and layers of paper. Then a present in a box in a box in a box….

So he really started it. It’s so not my fault.

And about 5 or 6 years ago, I started getting revenge.

One year the present consisted of layers of paper, layers of duct tape, wall paper, and fireworks.

See? It had a warning label and everything!!!

Then there was the one that had battery powered christmas lights and barbed wire.

Last year I got a maze that you can put something small in…like a key. So Uncle Jimmy had to un-wrap the maze, which was in multiple boxes…then work the maze to get the key out, and the key then unlocked the padlock and chain that were wrapped around his real present…which had hardened insulation (The stuff in the can, “Great Stuff”) and dryway spackle. Mom…less than amused. Jimmy couldn’t stop laughing.

I'm holding the box with the maze in it. Beside me is the real present, under lock and key.

So far this year I haven’t made it home to wrap the present yet, because there is about 16 inches of snow outside and…I can’t drive the hour home because the interstates are shut down. But I have a pile of stuff ready to wrap the present. The pile includes curtain rods, cammo pants, dryer vents, cell phone chargers, cell phones, and bubble wrap. It’s starting to get hard to out-do myself.

It wouldn’t be Christmas without the “Official Jimmy Walker Christmas Present”. This is my first year living this far away from my family…so coming home to wrap that present is something I’ve been looking forward to for weeks. It’s my favorite part of the holidays, and I prepare for it all year long. I can’t even begin to put in to words how much I love this tradition. It’s more than playing a prank…I really feel like the effort I put in to this present, is equal to how much I love my whole family, and the holidays. Now my cousins take the present that their parents get me, and they wrap it in much the same fashion that I wrap their dad’s. Everyone is involved at this point.

So. That’s my faaaaaaavorite Christmas Thing.

Other Junk:

Well you heard about the snow already…so I’ll skip that part. In fun news I got to give Carly her Christmas/Graduation presents last week! She loved them.

Pretty gloves!!!

And we also baked cookies. A metric ton of cookies.

Mmmmmmmm. And yes, I ate ALL the cookies.

And my neighbors got a puppy…

Olive!!!

And…oh yeah…I GOT A DOG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where am I? Why won't you let me sleep?

He’s 2 years old, and his original name is/was Miho…but I’m thinking of changing it to Hemingway. I really wanted something that sounded like Miho, so as not to confuse him too much…but I just can’t find anything I like. So I’m pretty sure his name is now Hemi.

Paco…wasn’t too happy, but he’s slowly warming up to the idea. Last night he got semi-comfortable with the idea.

This is as close as Paco was comfortable getting to the new addition.

So far the new doggy is doing well. He has had a few indoor accidents but that’s kind of normal for confused/stressed animals. He was/is house trained according to his previous owner, but I think it’s just the confusion of the situation. I’m pretty sure he’ll get over it in a week or so. I hope.

He knows “sit” and “no” and today we worked on “stay” and “lie down” He did pretty well! We also are working on “don’t pee in the house” and “don’t put shoes in your mouth”.

Mostly, he just sleeps though. He seems really unsure about what’s going on, and what I want him to do. And he really does not like to go outside in the snow to use the bathroom. Haha. Poor guy. It’ll take time, but he’ll adapt. The good news is he is MUCH more accepting of Paco than Paco is of him. He has barely looked at Paco, but doesn’t fear Paco like Uri does. I think they will eventually be friends.

I’m also SUPER excited for Uri and Hemi to meet. I think they will get along well. They are about the same size I think. Hemi is really not very big for a boxer!!!

Well anyway, that’s all I have for this week. Time for the…

Sucking Up Shoutout:

This week’s shoutout goes to my family…in particular mom.

Mom, if you read this. DON’T KILL ME!!!!!!!! I KNOW I don’t NEED a dog right now. I KNOW you will not be happy about the dog and I especially know dad is NOT going to let the dog come to the house for Christmas….but….just try to be understanding.

The doggy is good with cats and doesn’t beg for food like a certain overweight gray feline we both know.

He’s a sweet dog….he really would behave if he can pretty please come over for Christmas!!!!! Mom, don’t freak out. I have wanted a dog for years….and I shouldn’t have to beg for your permission at this point in my life, but I feel like I do…

So just don’t freak out, and don’t make me feel bad about getting a dog. I wanted a doggy.

I got a doggy.

Don’t get mad.

Love you, mommy.

HOLY CRAP IRONMAN IS ON AND I FREAKING FORGOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! UGH!!!!!!!!!

And lastly…here’s my “Go dig the car out” outfit.

Yay for public humiliation.

<img title="Long sleeve tee.
Just in folks!!! The 5.o liter V8 that Ford is dropping into the 2011 Mustang will be churning out 412hp!

What’s that, you say? Not as much power as Camaro and Challenger? Dude, like it matters!! The 4.6 liter V8 was never too far behind the Camaro 0-60 time and just ahead of the Challenger’s. Need I remind you, that was back when the Mustang only had a 315hp answer for 422-426hp of the competition.

412hp isn’t as much as 426, but the Mustang started out being lighter than both of it’s rivals. Even if the 5.0 liter V8 weighs more than the old iron 4.6 (it shouldn’t because the 5.0 is aluminum), it won’t be enough to matter. This isn’t just a chess game of power numbers, but of power-to-weight ratios.

The Mustang had the new muscle market corner right until the Challenger hit the streets. Then the Camaro put up it’s dukes and claimed superiority in 2009. But like a lot of things in the universe, the car industry is cyclical, and the Mustang is poised to be the leader of the pack again in 2010. Oh look! A rhyme!

One of my good friends ErikB just started a business Baycustoms.com , he is still working on the website so stay tuned to that. This is their demo car, its a Chrysler 300c with a Built 7.0 liter Hemi, with a kenne bell supercharger. On its old turbo setup it ran 11.6’s, i can’t wait to see it in action next season now with the new kenne bell powered setup. I’m gonna have to schedule a more formal photoshoot for this beast, as i just snapped a few pics at the SF autoshow few weeks back.

To start this off I’m going to set straight exactly what show we attended. We drove to Plum Corner in Rochester for the one and only “Flathead Jacks” 10th annual Gathering of the Faithful New England Speed Meeting. We have attended this show for a few years now, every year guarantees cool cars and cold people since it’s in October in New England.

This show draws a lot of cars that don’t go to everyday cruise nights and local shows. The type of cars that show up are old roundy rounds, midgets, vintage racers and of course the enthusiasts. This pre- 1960 show draws mostly hot rods, though you will see some customs and muscle cars in the mix. The Gathering is one of the only shows around where you can see a variety of cars from vintage slingshots, old race cars and hot rods in the same place.

On the front row sat a black on black 1931 Ford Model A roadster which wore old salt flat numbers 37b. Under the louvered hood was a warmed over 1941 Flathead motor. The motor had been bored to 239 cubic inches with Edelbrock heads ported and polished to let the flatty breathe deeper. Bolted to the top of the motor is a Thickstun 2×2 manifold with two Holly 94’s (Ford of course) to complete the hopped up motor. This roadster is a real driver and has frequented the salt flats on the west coast numerous times in the last few years.

A few hours into the show everyone huddled around the stage with coffee in hand while a seminar was put on by Mac Van Pelt. Mac is the author of the How-to manual ”The Ins and Outs of Early Ford Transmissions”. Mac pulled apart and went through an early Ford transmission in great depth with lots of questions and answers interspersed enabling the studious crowd to absorb his knowledge.

This was the ending show of my Massachusetts season and what a way to end the year. I can’t wait for the spring!

Celebrating the American Roots and Growing New Green Branches ©2009 Isaac Hernández Bob Lee, the man

Celebrating the American Roots and Growing New Green Branches
©2009 Isaac Hernández

Bob Lee, the man behind the rebirth of the Hemi V8 engine in 2003 has recently been replaced by Paolo Ferrero as senior Vice President of Chrysler Powertrain. Lee continues at Chrysler, but now Ferrero, who served as vice-president of product engineering at Fiat, calls the shots when it comes to engines.

Fiat owns 20% of Chrysler Group LLC and has management power. As part of the investment deal, Fiat will provide its fuel-efficient engines to Chrysler. If Fiat were to manufacture these engines in the US, the Italian company would be allowed to purchase an additional 5% of the American brand.

Some people in America are afraid that the Fiat takeover would represent the end of the Hemi engine. At Chrysler LLC, they love the Hemi and they’re making sure that the Italians learn to love it too.

During a recent visit of the Italian Minister of Economic Development, Claudio Scajola, to the Chrysler headquarters, the Italian delegation was shown the wind tunnel with no other than a Hemi Chrysler Viper SRT-10 ACR in it.

During the MotoGP Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix races in Laguna Seca, California, Fiat Yamaha Team riders former World Champion Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo drove a 425-horsepower 6.1-liter HEMI-powered Dodge Challenger SRT8.

I have been lucky to drive the Dodge Challenger HEMI on the Willow Springs racetrack first by myself, and then with Eric Heuschele at the wheel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eu3G-HthIh4). Eric, Supervisor of Vehicle Dynamics SRT Engineering, is passionate about the Hemi. He later gave me a ride in the Viper ACR (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcbLujK2Gy8)

Today I saw some extremist Americans in Seattle holding posters of Barack Obama with a Hitler’s mustache. I don’t know what far right Republicans find in common between the US president and the German dictator, and didn’t care to stop and find out… If Fiat stops production of the HemiI, soon we may also see posters of a bald Obama as Benito Mussolini. The only reason we haven’t seen them already is because most Americans probably wouldn’t know who Mussolini is. If they only knew that the Hemi V-8 is built in Saltillo, Mexico…

But I’m getting distracted by non-sense politics. Today I want to celebrate the Hemi heritage, in honor of those men and women who have given their ingenuity to develop the hemispherical combustion chamber, which with its arched shape, allows for the spark plug to be placed in the center of the chamber and the position of the valves allows for better breathing of the engine.

The first Chrysler HEMI engine was an inverted V-16, rated at 2,500 horsepower, developed for WWII aircraft, but it never made it into production.

Fiat’s own history has a hemispherical engine, the one that powered the A.L.F.A. 40/60 GP car in 1914. There have been other hemispherical engines before, in racecars from Peugeot, Pipe and Miller, as well as production cars from Duesenberg. Stutz and Offenhauser, among others.

Chrysler continued developing the Hemi after WWII, but it wasn’t until the Chrysler C300 came out in 1955 that the legend began to be written. It was the first production car in the US with over 300 hp. Chrysler won the NASCAR Grand National title and the AAA Championship, with a whooping 33 race victories. Many say the C300 was the first muscle car. The FirePower engine came to propel different models of Dodge, Chrysler, Imperial and DeSoto cars. The Hemi engine died with the 1959 model year.

The legend was reborn in 1964, specifically to win at NASCAR. And win it did. Richard Petty dominated in 1964 and 1966 with the blue Plymouth Superbird Number 43, powered by the 426 Hemi (426 for its cubic inches, or 7 liters). It became such an important part of American car culture, that in the 2006 film Cars, Pixar included a car inspired on the Superbird, named “King”, voiced by Petty himself. It was for this second generation that Chrysler trademarked the name Hemi. Its life came again to an end in 1971.

The first Chrysler Hemi lasted for four years, the second one for twice as long. If we were to follow mathematical logic, the third generation (built in 5.7, 6.1 and 6.4 liter variations, so far) born in 2003 should be around until 2015. Will it? Unfortunately, as much as Americans love their Hemi, sales are not supporting its long-term survival.

The Hemi of the future?

American ingenuity will find a way to have fun with cars and be environmentally friendly, now that our main focus ought to be to reduce carbon emissions, so that our children don’t have to suffer extreme global warming.

Popular Mechanics (PM) modified a Dodge Challenger SRT8, turning it into an Eco+Muscle car. The idea is to use “inexpensive aerodynamic aids, a state-of-the-art electric drive system and some other helpful bits” to turn the Challenger “into a parallel hybrid plug-in/solar/electric that burns no fuel at all in everyday driving.“

The car, featured at the Las Vegas SEMA Show in November, will be auctioned in Scottsdale, Arizona in November.

PM paid $30,740.00 for the Challenger, and quite a bit more on gasoline, doing 9.0 mpg in stop-and-go traffic. On the freeway, because of the computerized cylinder deactivation, they could get as much as 25.4 mpg on the highway.

The tuners went all out, trying to squeeze as much power out of the V-8, even adding a nitrous system. Then they added a UQM electric motor, at a weight penalty of 89 lbs. producing 125 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque. The electric motor provides all torque from the very beginning, improving acceleration for the Challenger. How do you power it? With 28 Exide Select Orbital lead batteries in the back seat, producing 336 volts. This was the best compromise between power and price, according to PM. They’d prefer a lithion-ion system, but pricing was out of their range.

The racing stripes on the carbon fiber hood are actually flexible solar panels, which help charge the batteries. “On a sunny day, they recharge the battery at a rate of 2.5 amps”.

The rear axle was modified and so was the fuel tank. There’s also a fuel cell under the trunk. Making everything fit took some genius. You can read more about it in http://media.origin.popularmechanics.com/documents/ecomuscle/index.html.

The cool thing about the Eco+Muscle Challenger is that the foot pedal controls the combustion engine, while a hand throttle sends powers the electric motor.

To compensate for the extra weight, many body parts were replaced with carbon fiber. The front seats were replaced by lighter ones, and the rearview mirrors were replaced by more aerodynamic video cameras.

There’s still work to do. The engineers are still trying to make the car work on fully electric mode in the city. Right now, the Hemi has to idle to power the power steering and power brakes even if the electric motor is driving the car.

The Eco+Muscle maybe a crazy idea, and an expensive one (PM doesn’t say how much it would cost to build one without all the sponsors), but it’s definitely a fun idea. My hat goes off to the people who want to reconcile the muscle with the eco, the past with the future.

We quickly give Joe’s shoebox Ford a tagteam cleaning scrubbing the oh so protective and stubb

We quickly give Joe’s shoebox Ford a tagteam cleaning scrubbing the oh so protective and stubborn elusive blue coating off the whitewalls of the four freshly mounted Goodyear Super Cushions. A hand off of the quick detailer and I’m wiping down the body and chrome. Final stretch, the interior including polishing the windows for a glare-free ride, disposing of the never ending pile of fliers of past shows and we’re on the road to the AMVETS Post 79 in Natick, MA. Remembering that this show in the past was quite possibly the best representation of traditional Hotrods and Customs in the New England area, Joe keeps the throttle wide open as we sail up the expressway.

The superb crowd and club friendliness makes me remember why I have been looking forward to this show all year. I’ve seen this club at shows all over New England for the last couple of years, they really put the extra effort into making their cars the coolest which gives them a very stellar reputation.

Turning onto Speen Street in Natick we quickly see the Alter Boys’ sign painted appropriately on two old car doors marking the entrance. We are greeted by two of the Alter Boys who mark our hands and head us to Pete Flaven who is on traffic duty lining up the cars. (Pete’s 33 Ford was also in Piecrust’s June 29th Sin Alley Saints story.) We slide out of the Ford and head to the show taking a quick glance at the vendors in the first lot. We approach the second lot in record time to check out the altered wheelbase and front engine dragsters lined up for a group photo.

I look at the nostalgic dragsters but I am quickly drawn to 1948 Fiat that reads Brady&Mahan that is owned by the lucky lucky Jack Brady of Cumberland, RI. I have seen this car run at New England Dragway numerous times throughout the years and it’s by far my favorite altered to see blast down the strip. It’s a real race car, meaning it has three pedals(gas, brake and clutch). Those pedals react via its hopped-up small block Chevy which exhales through zoomie style exhaust. Atop this growling beast sits a six pot intake with six Stromberg 97s. The power is fed through its 1965 Chevy three speed manual transmission hooked to a Ford 9 inch that turns its big Mickey Thompson hides.

The next group of cars we see are the cars of the Alter Boys. This section clearly has the most foot traffic of the day. In the back of their area the Alter Boys sell their Jalopy Jamboree shirts under a tent which is also shared with Tony “Flash” Dowers of Mag-Neto Magazine who is selling shirts as well as new and past issues of Mag-Neto Magazine. Eli English had part of his collection of cars at the show including his beautiful black 1955 Ford Customline which laid in the grass behind the other alterboys cars. Eli also brought his 1931 Ford Model A coupe with a stump pulling 1959 Buick Nailhead mounted neatly between the 1932 Ford frame rails. Next to the coupe is John Schols’ fresh 1931 Ford Model A roadster with a 1954 Oldsmobile 324 also sitting on 1932 Ford rails. Jared Brouilett drove his Model T roadster which is propelled by a vintage Ford Flathead with a 2 pot intake. We stand and watch carefully while Pete Flaven’s Green 1933 Ford coupe gets its aluminum hood and grille lettered by a very talented pinstriper named Don Fearon. When Don finished striping we check out his work and find amazing perfect crisp dark lines which read “Edmunds racing equip. and Sta-Lube” on the grille.

Down the hill I see a plethora of 1932 Fords, Model A s and T s, Coupes, Sedans and Roadsters all of which share the same concept which is the traditional Hotrod. I am quickly overloaded with the sight of bias ply tires, Buick brakes, quickchange and two speed rear-ends, chopped tops and channel jobs. The shutter on my camera just wants to stay open to absorb all the detail and colors of the cars. I see a crowd of people standing around a 1932 Ford coupe that is giving off a vintage aura. I get closer to the car and see four Stromberg 97s that feed a small Cragar blower that is mounted upon an iconic small block Chevy. Which in turn is connected to a 1939 Ford transmisson and is modified with Lincoln Zepher gears leading to the almighty holy grail of vintage rearends the Columbia two speed. The car also has the perfect stance with its 16×3 1/2 front V8-60 wheels with 4.50/4.75 16 Firestones and its 16×5 rears wrapped with massive 8.90 16 Firestones.

Across from the 32 there lies a 1954 Chevy that is absolutely stunning, its paint and chrome are simply amazing. Checking the car out I hear the owner talking about how there was 7 inches added to the roof top during the chop which explains its perfect proportions. Its dechromed, shaved and Frenched exterior are only the start of the body mods. The pristine bodywork was done by a guy at the show, who painted the car in his garage. I would have never believed it if I didn’t hear it myself. The black paint soaks me in and it seems a mile deep. The ebony interior and trunk are designed perfectly to complement the exterior. The Chevy’s chrome smoothie wheels and wide white walls tuck nicely inside the wheel wells with the help from the airbag suspension at all four corners.

I am happy to see all the club jackets and clubwear being worn through the day, including Sin Alley Saints, Double-Crossers, Road Lords, Rod Knockers and of course the Alter Boys. The show continues into the night playing videos of the “Alter Boys do Bonneville” and then “Devil at Your Feet” . Just as I suspected another amazing show put on by the Alter Boys. You guys never seem to let us down! Hopefully I will be bringing my coupe next year…We will see!

Pictures from the show are in the column on the right marked Alter Boys and Alter Boys 2

I really arrived at the posting page to see if there actually was a future posting thing so you could have your posts be published at a certain time after you write them. After I found out it did exist I started to think of all the possibilities. How about a blog written while you are slowly dying and then published, post by post, after you are gone. IMAGINE HOW CREEPY THAT WOULD BE? so we will not be trying that toda(what about a kid planning to commit suicide???? still creepy?)y. I insure you that I am a minimum of 82.5% alive at the time of writing which IS ALSO THE TIME OF POSTING THANK YOU VERY MUCH!(well sort of)

On another thought completely, I, myself, the person writing this, am none to partial to American cars, the build quality stinks and they cant turn without the aid of a turntable (I know I’m being to critical but……..forgot what I was going to say…. anyway). The somewhat new Dodge Challenger is awesome, it’s cool, has nice wheels, and the engine isn’t bad….. Well there you have it, now you know of the only American I would spend money on……..

M3’s, it’s weird, everyday when I walk home, I always see at least 1(my record is 3), it’s strange, I didn’t think it was THAT popular of a car…. hmm what do I know?

OOOO now I can be contacted at cwylie27@ymail.com e-mail me so I can ignore all the fan mail and feel self-righteous…. actually I will probably be so excited, I actually got an e-mail because of this blog that I will spontaneously combust…… If you’re too lazy I’ll make it easy for you here are some links to possibly your e-mail provider
