Österrikaren Jules (Oskar Werner) och fransmannen Jim (Henri Serre) är bästa vänner och de delar allt. De förälskar sig till och med i samma kvinna: Catherine (Jeanne Moreau). Jules blir den som gifter sig med henne. Men efter andra världskriget – där de två männen strider på olika sidor – så kommer Jim och flyttar in hos Jules och Catherine. Det gifta paret har nu barn men de verkar inte så lyckliga och Catherine är otrogen med många olika män. Hon försöker även förföra Jim, vilket lyckas. När Jules inser att han håller på att förlora Catherine ber han Jim att gifta sig med henne så att de alla tre kan fortsätta umgås och ha hand om barnet tillsammans. Men Catherine verkar bli mer och mer psykiskt instabil och krävande…

En väldigt intressant polyrelation. Jag skulle inte kalla Jules och Jims relation som homoerotisk på något sätt, men de älskar varandra väldigt mycket och de tävlar inte mot varandra om kvinnan.  Sen är ju inte allt happy happy heller, men det är en klassisk film som man kanske borde se någon gång.

Criança gosta de ouvir toda noite a mesma história antes de dormir. Eu também. Não precisa ser sempre do mesmo jeito, desde que seja bem contada. Eventualmente até conto minha própria história pra mim mesmo, sempre de um jeito diferente. Mas as vezes encontro minha história nas palavras ou nas películas – de algum gênio. O gênio da vez é Truffaut, e a história é o clássico Jules et Jim.
Jules et Jim conta a história de um triângulo amoroso na França, no início do séxulo XX. Com essa fórmula eu poderia apresentar Os Sonhadores, mas esqueça a sonolência cult e ao mesmo tempo hiperativa deste: Truffaut é sensível, poético e trágico. Jules et Jim é uma história sobre amor, fidelidade e fracasso. Sobre liberdade também. E uma das coisas que mais gostei foi ver que é uma história sem vilões, onde qualquer julgamento moral exige a adoção da perspectiva de um dos três personagens principais, com quem o espectador provavelmente se identificará em algum momento – até porque os personagens encarnam certos estereótipos humanos muito gerais, ainda que por vezes suas condutas sejam um tanto excêntricas.
A história é simples: Jules e Jim são dois amigos inseparáveis. Jim é um sedutor e Jules um fracassado com as mulheres. Até que Jules encontra Catherine, por quem se apaixona e com quem decide viver. Mas sobre essa linha de história tão simples Truffaut enriquece infinitamente a narrativa através de um bombardeio poético de sutilezas. Sim, os personagens são riquíssimos e seus modos de responder às situações criam uma trama delicada onde valores como “amizade”, “fidelidade”, “amor” e “respeito” vão se  chocar, se transformar e aparecer sob diferentes perspectivas nas quase duas horas de filme (onde, por pelo menos uma hora, os mais românticos estarão engasgados de angústia).
Através das relações dos personagens Truffaut impõe a reflexão ao espectador: é necessário refletir, junto com Jim, Jules e Catherine, sobre a natureza do amor. Jules e Catherine se casam e vão viver longe do mundo. Tem uma linda filhinha chamada Sabine. Mas o que parece ser um quadro típico de felicidade conjugal e amorosa – que é o clima transmitido na cena em que Jim visita o casal pela primeira vez – é, por força da complexidade dos personagens, uma situação bem mais delicada. Jules é irremediavelmente ingênuo e compassivo. “A solicitude de Jules” conquistou Catherine. Mas como todo ingênuo, Jules é tolo e magoa Catherine sem perceber. Assim, Jules assiste com resignação sua amada Catherine adentrar por um caminho de traição que lhe serve como catarse do ressentimento: quando ofendida, Catherine trai. E se Jules é um tolo, sempre ofende Catherine o suficiente para mantê-la plena de pretextos para a traição.
A reaproximação de Jim e Jules (que haviam se afastado durante a guerra) insere um terceiro elemento fixo que instalar-se-á liquidamente na vida do casal. Até, finalmente, instalar-se também em sua casa e passar a viver como amante de Catherine. Com o beatífico consentimento de Jules que, por amor, cede a própria dignidade.
Catherine, contudo, é uma mulher de difícil convívio. É plenamente lúcida dos próprios desejos, mas completamente fria no que tange ao respeito para com seus dois cônjuges. Assim, é com frieza que ela lidará com o ciúme de ambos, embora ao próprio ciúme ela permita uma manifestação passional. Mesmo Jim começará a ser julgado na balança do ressentimento de Catherine: quando este lhe ofende, é pago com traição.
Jim, finalmente, é o elemento mais razoável do trio. Não é nem o santo nem o libertino. Tem uma espécie de namorada em outra cidade e passa pelo menos metade do filme resolvendo a própria angústia: deve ficar com Catherine ou com sua outra amante? É também através de Jim que compreendemos, em um dos últimos e mais brilhantes diálogos, de que maneira podemos ler essa história de um modo racional: Catherine tem um compromisso consigo mesma e sua aversão à hipocrisia da convenção da monogamia à levou a inventar uma forma de amor. Que também fracassou. Assim, Jim diz à Catherine que não se casará com ela, pois ela não lhe oferece o que pede em troca. Entrevemos, então, como será o final do filme: Catherine tenta matar Jim. Este escapa. Mas não por muito tempo. Em um inocente passeio de carro, Catherine atira o veículo em um rio, suicidando-se e levando Jim consigo.
O filme é riquíssimo e preenchido por reflexões – sempre presentes nos diálogos dos personagens – e narrativas paralelas. Como, por exemplo, a história que Jim conta sobre um soldado que foi seu colega na guerra e que apaixonou-se perdidamente por uma mulher à quem vira uma vez e com quem trocou intensa correspondência nas trincheiras. Esse homem ficou noivo por correspondência e seus sentimentos respeitosos se transformaram em uma paixão avassaladora. Infelizmente ele morreu nos campos de batalha antes de poder viver o amor.
De qualquer forma, vale comentar que no início do filme tive a impressão de que não iria gostar do filme. Que talvez fosse injustificada sua presença em algumas listas de “maiores filmes da história”. Mas a sutileza de Truffaut e sua delicada forma de contar uma história onde a moralidade esteja em um segundo plano diante dos projetos e desejos dos personagens individualmente considerados definitivamente valem as duas horas de atenção – e muitas outras de reflexão.

Jules (Werner) is an Austrian and Jim (Serre) is a Frenchman.  They are best friends, though that is tested when a free-spirited woman, Catherine (Moreau), comes between them.  Over the years, this love triangle changes shapes and directions, all the while spinning perilously towards a dark conclusion.

This was my first exposure to the film styling of Francois Truffaut.  In fact, the only thing I really knew him from was his appearance in the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind.  I do know he’s influential and beloved by many people, and that this movie is a particular fan favorite.  I can see why, for the most part, though it does get pretty dark and depressing in the latter stages of the film.

The initial relationship between the 3 main characters is fun to watch.  Catherine leads the two men on random adventures that they’ve never experienced before.  You can see why both men would be attracted to her, though Jim promises Jules not to pursue her.  It’s almost like a brotherly relationship where the “I called it” rule applies.  Unfortunately for Jules, Catherine is a woman who simply can’t be possessed like that.

As Catherine grows bored and has a relationship with another man before then bouncing to Jim, the film just gets more and more depressing to watch.  I really felt bad for everyone, Jules in particular, as he seemed like the only one who knew what would truly make him happy – being with Catherine.

The more the meanness and conflict grew, the more my patience for the movie waned.  Then the final, rather shocking, scene just left me sort of baffled.  Though, I guess it makes sense in the context of the movie.  It’s interesting how much my opinion of Catherine changed from the beginning of the movie to the end.  At first she seemed like a fun, charming person, but in the end I saw her as sort of selfish, lonely, and sad.

I can’t say I loved this movie, but I do respect it from a story point of view and a style point of view.  I can see its influence in various movies and even music videos I’ve seen over the years.

Crazy can be mistaken as “free-spirited” quite easily…especially when it’s pretty.

A recomendação do Cinerama de hoje é um DVD raro de achar em locadoras, mas que vale a pena procurar.

“Jules e Jim“, dirigido por François Truffaut, é um dos poucos filmes realizados com a preocupação de ser fiel ao livro que lhe deu origem. Nos dias de hoje, poucos sequer sabem que o filme teve origem num livro. A obra, cheia de força, acabou adquirindo seu próprio status.

Feito em 1962, o filme abordou de forma bastante polêmica para a época o tema do triângulo amoroso. O alemão Jules (Oskar Werner) e o francês Jim (Henri Serre) são dois grandes amigos. Lutaram de lados opostos na Primeira Guerra Mundial, mas nem assim deixaram de manter contato.

A amizade dos dois é inabalável até que Jules se casa com Catherine (Jeanne Moreau), uma mulher de gênio inconstante; bela, porém maluca. Jim acaba se apaixonando por ela também e os três acabam vivendo, durante algum tempo, na mesma casa, num relacionamento a 3 bastante chocante para aqueles que ainda não tinham vivido a era de “Paz e Amor” dos hippies, que aconteceria na década de 70.

Catherine não sabe o que quer. É a típica indecisa, que fica fazendo os dois amigos de capacho. Jules é um homem extremamente submisso, quer ficar com a mulher a qualquer custo. Em certo ponto, Jim se cansa da situação, mas a egoísta e bipolar Catherine fica bastante aborrecida em ter de escolher entre os dois.

A mulher é realmente maluca. Na cena mais famosa do filme, ela se veste de homem e aposta corrida com os dois numa ponte. Essa cena até inspirou o clip da música Kiss Me, do grupo Sixpence None The Richter. Em outra parte do filme, ela se joga num rio, tentando se afogar. Mas, ao invés de aborrecer, seus rompantes conseguem divertir o público, que fica na expectativa do que a personagem vai aprontar. Esse filme é o ponto alto da carreira de musa de Moreau, na época namorada do diretor.

O jeito de Truffaut filmar é único, com uma montagem bastante peculiar, narração constante em off, além de congelar alguns frames na tela, para mostrar uma idéia ou provar um ponto de vista. O final nos deixa bem atordoados, supresos e chegamos a achá-lo idiota. Faz um pouco de sentido. Mas para você saber do que cargas d’água estou falando, só assistindo mesmo.

I think I can understand why Jules et Jim is revered by some and reviled by others.  It is a film which doesn’t make a great deal of sense rationally and, in many ways, I can imagine its modernist extra-contextual content could be construed as pretentious.  Truffaut’s film centres on three flawed characters and proceeds to examine the nature and shift of their relationships.  So, yes, I can also imagine people thinking that it is conceptually arid.  And some of the dialogue is barmy- “Your breasts are the only grenades I love” being a particularly fine example of that.  There is plenty here that critics can get their teeth into.  But they’re missing the beauty of the film.  It is high art, no doubt.  But it is also- and this is something I feel that the nouvelle vague usually got spot on- breezy and whimsical and entertaining and pacy and endearing.

If I was to examine the film as a purely intellectual piece, I would focus upon its exploration of conflicting love: when romantic and fraternal love come into conflict; when a person loves two people or two people love a single person; when a person loves another so much that he will endure any heartbreak not to lose her; when being in love becomes fraternal love, etc.  I would also look at the film in the context of the time it was made rather than the setting, to see Catherine’s matriarchal dominance as a reflection of the French feminist movement and read her impulsive free spiritedness as a signifier of liberation from male dominance in a wider context.  I would consider the way in which Truffaut objectifies Catherine as an ideal woman- and how that idealism includes the capacity for great cruelty and selfishness.  I might also consider what the film has to say about the affection between Jules (the German) and Jim (the Frenchman) which is their overriding concern during the war and whether this speaks of a deeper humanist disdain for national identity and patriotism- or is simply a commentary upon the fractious state of Europe during the preceding half a century.  I would also wonder about the significance of the breezy nostalgic mood which is interrupted by the harsh realities of a stupid and futile war.

On the other hand, if I was to consider the film technically I would be looking at Truffaut’s choice of camera angles and the fluid style he utilises- which would certainly have been innovative at the time.  I would consider the lighting and how this impacts upon the mood of the film- enhancing the breeziness I spoke of earlier.  I would be interested to understand more about the decision to move the films narrative (successfully, I may add) at such breathtaking pace and the exclusion of all details not pertaining to the main thrust of the story.  I would discuss the success of the narrator as a device to achieve these aims.  I would focus upon some of Truffaut’s little conceits- the intermittent freeze-frames which say to the viewer “I want you to remember this just as it is now” and especially the visual objectification of Jeanne Moreau.

But you know what, pretentious little twat though I may tend to be, I ignore all of these things and just focus on the beautiful whimsical representation of deep affectionate relationships centred around impulsiveness and the desire to be happy.  And I really enjoy Jules et Jim on that basis.  8/10

After watching this bizarre love triangle I was surprised that Catherine, the female tempest, wasn’t given a title credit. Interesting also to note how much Amélie, the most successful French film of the last decade, mimicked the quirkiness and playfulness of this entertaining and intriguing gem. JJ
