Words can’t explain the sorrow I feel for Henry Jones. I’ve come to know him well during the past few months. He hired me to videotape the celebration of life for his wife Vi who had recently passed away.

During this time he stopped by my office several times. We talked, he told me about his work in the Methodist church and the utter devotion he and Vi shared for making the world a better place to live. He sold her Cadillac and gave the money to charity.

Then his own car was stolen from in front of his office. he didn’t care that much about the car, but he wanted back the bible Vi had given him so many years ago. Luckily he was able to borrow back the Caddy he just sold.

To be around Henry is to be humbled. He gives of himself and then gives more. He wants to end world hunger. He wants to share the good things his faith has given him. He is the epitome of goodness. I share the sentiment of my friend, Bill McGarvey Jr., who said “being around Henry makes you feel like you haven’t done enough for the world.”

Billy was also telling me today about how he and Henry were having dinner the other night when Henry got a call that his daughter Kristi had fallen ill with the flu and that there were some complications. She was either going to get better with an aggressive treatment the doctors were applying, or, well, things weren’t going to go so well.

Not more than two hours after Billy was telling us about Henry we got word that Kristi had died.

Such sadness. Such sorrow. So unfair.

1. Hi Chris,
 
Do you think the Bills will remain with the huddle for the remainder of the season? I think it helps a lot with a young offensive line when it comes to getting the play count down.

Also I really think some of the most successful plays on offense have been when they move the pocket and Fitzpatrick bootlegs to the right and when they run draw plays with Jackson (it’s a great way to break a blitz). Do you have any information on whether these will become more implemented into the Offense?

CB: I do believe huddling up will continue to be the main approach. The offense has so many other problems right now where if huddling up can eliminate the false start penalties they’re going to stick with it.

As for some of the plays you mentioned I believe moving the pocket is a good idea in light of the deficiencies in pass protection at times. If I remember right on the touchdown pass from Fitzpatrick to Evans in the Jets game, they rolled Fitzpatrick away from where the pressure appeared to be coming from (left side) and slid protection in that direction to hold it up.

I do like draws plays particularly with Jackson in the lineup, but I’d also like to see the screen game return to the offense. It’s been used sparingly since Week 1.

2. Hey Chris,
I was wondering, why doesn’t the league make every QB wear the double helmet, ala mark kelso, to deter concussions? Why dont you see ANY player, for that matter, wear them?

CB: The league has a contract with one specific company (Riddell I want to say) to use their helmets, which to this point do not include the extra protection technology being developed by Mark Kelso and a couple of other outfits. One of those outside companies hope to pitch to the NFL their helmets for the sole purpose of preventing head injuries.

But you make a good point. In a quarterback-driven league where they develop extra rules to protect QBs to keep them on the field, to keep offenses entertaining and keep fans in the seats and watching on TV, you’d think they’d be eager to move forward with such helmet technology. It’s coming, but when exactly I don’t know.

3. Hey Chris,
Byrd looks like the next Ed Reed do you see him making it to the Pro Bowl THIS YEAR?

CB: I’d like to say yes, but he’s not on the ballot. A lot of fans have asked how can he not be on the Pro Bowl ballot in light of the season he’s had. That’s the problem, the ballots are printed up before the season really gets rolling so what happens during the season can get a bit lost in the shuffle.

Byrd was not even a starter at the beginning of the season, so being put on the ballot was unlikely back then. That’s not to say he’s not a viable candidate by any means. Heck he leads the league in interceptions. I just think it’s going to be tough because he’s not on the ballot, he’s a rookie and he’s playing for a team that’s doesn’t have a winning record.

4. Hi Chris-
I’ve been thinking about what the Bills do when Whitner & Scott come back from injuries. Byrd has to start. He may be our best draft pick in the last decade.

So I would keep him at free safety, maybe bring back Whitner at strong safety.DW is pretty good at run support & the occasional safety blitz. However Scott may be even better at run support than Donte.

Considering the sorry state of affairs with the linebacking crew, any thoughts on trying Scott at LB? He couldn’t be any worse than Buggs or Palmer were, & Draft doesn’t impress me either. The Bills toyed with the idea of trying Scott at LB during training camp, didn’t they? What do you think of that idea?  I’m comfortable with George Wilson backing up at both safety positions.

CB: Well the Bills gave Scott some reps at the LB position during the bye week. It looks as though he’s a reserve option if Keith Ellison’s quad injury keeps him out of next Sunday’s game. Donte Whitner however, still is not practicing. That could change next week, but if not Scott will likely be plugged back in at SS.

It’s tough to say how it’s all going to play out with all the variables, but I think if Ellison plays, Scott starts at SS. If Ellison sits we just might see Scott at LB with Wilson staying at SS in the starting lineup, provided Whitner can’t return. It all depends on how comfortable the defensive staff would be in playing rookie Nic Harris.

5. Hey Chris,
 Being from Ohio I got to finally watch the Bills again (after the season opener) vs the Browns then again vs the Jets. I noticed in the Cleveland game that Byrd was all over the field. So I ask you this, is it too early to jump on his bandwagon and make the argument for defensive rookie of the year? Has Buffalo ever had a DB start off this hot before?

CB: Don’t think it’s too early at all. His stiffest competition right now is Houston LB Brian Cushing, who you saw turn in some big plays against the Bills last week. He’s leading all rookies in tackles and has made game changing plays with forced fumbles, fumble recoveries, sack and interceptions.

Right now I see it as a two-horse race, but Byrd is the real deal. We’ll see if any other rookies join the competition in the season’s second half.

Whether or not a Bills defensive back has ever started as hot as Jairus Byrd (7 INTs in 8 games and 6 starts), the answer is yes. Butch Byrd, the franchise’s all-time interception leader with 40 in his Bills career actually has seven interceptions in the first six games of 1969. The only problem was he didn’t post another interception the rest of that season.

Henry Jones (1992) had six interceptions in his first seven games and Nate Odomes (1993) had six in his first eight in their career-high interceptions seasons, so they were pretty close to Jairus. 

The Bills’ record holders for most interceptions in a season (Billy Atkins-1961, Tom Janik-1967) got off to decent starts as well, but not as good as the rookie Byrd. Atkins had seven interceptions in his first 10 games and nine in his first 11 games that season before finishing with 10.

Janik had six interceptions in his first 12 games, but had a three interception game in Week 13 that season to have 9 heading into the final game where he posted one more pick to finish with 10.

After calling a Perris pastor and one co-defendant “economic predators,” a federal judge in Los Angeles sentenced the men to prison terms for bilking investors of almost $30 million in a Ponzi scheme.

U.S. District Judge Percy Anderson sentenced pastor Robert Jennings, 59, to 12 years in prison Monday for his role defrauding 500 people of more than $28 million, according to a news release from the U.S. attorney’s office.

Defendant Arthur Simburg, 64, of Oregon, was sentenced to nine years in federal prison, according to the news release.

The judge also ordered Simburg and Jennings to pay $28 million in restitution to their victims.

Co-defendant Henry Jones, 53, formerly of Marina Del Rey, is to be sentenced next year. Jones was extradited from Hong Kong in December, according to the news release.

The defendants promised investors huge returns — up to 300 percent within two months, but the company made no profits and had only two coal mines, according to the indictment.

Jennings had told investors he was president of a coal-mining company that had four mines and a stockpile of more than $1 million worth of coal, according to court records.

They also took money for what they called a secret sale of 20,000 tons of gold between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, according to the U.S. attorney’s news release.

There were group prayers and a claim the gold transaction was divinely inspired during the groups’ calls to investors, the indictment said.

Jones spent more than $21 million of the victims’ money on exotic cars, his Marina Del Rey-based music business and a house in Marina Del Rey, according to court records.

Voglio provare l’esperienza di guardare i film “aiutandomi” con i contenuti del diario, i suggerimenti e gli appunti.

Allora, questa è la mia opinione su INDIANA JONES E IL REGNO DEL TESCHIO DI CRISTALLO: a distanza di tutti questi anni essere riusciti a fare un film conservando ritmi e atmosfere dei film originali è un MIRACOLO. Spielberg è riuscito dove molti hanno fallito (vedi Lucas con Star Wars). Dobbiamo poi aggiungere che si tratta di un QUARTO episodio! Molte trilogie degli anni Ottanta a cui eravamo abituati, solitamente erano riuscite fino al secondo episodio, mentre già il terzo faceva cagare, nonostante era girato non più di due-tre anni dopo il precedente. Qui invece sono passati vent’anni dall’ultimo Indy! E nonostante ciò abbiamo un film che ha tutte le carte in regola per essere magari non all’altezza de I predatori dell’arca perduta, ma sicuramente per essere un OTTIMO quarto episodio, non so se mi spiego. I personaggi funzionano, il ritmo c’è, non ti annoi mai, godi a vedere un 90% di scene girate senza effetti digitali (dimostrando che si possono fare ancora film così; le uniche scene in CGI sono quelle finale con gli alieni e l’ufo), le battute sono simpatiche etc. etc.
Ovviamente il film ha i suoi difetti. I personaggi non tutti sono all’altezza dei precedenti: di MARCUS, SALLAH, e soprattutto di HENRY JONES SR. si sente decisamente la mancanza. Ma ripeto, è un quarto episodio, e quindi va più che bene. Indy è attorniato comunque da personaggi che riescono ad interagire con lui alla grande, se la cavano, sono simpatici, degni di condividere le sue avventure… insomma vorresti essere lì con loro, e sicuramente questo è un tipo di sensazione che Spielberg ci tiene a comunicare, uno dei motivi per cui un film d’avventura riesce o meno. A differenza di molti, mi è piaciuto il personaggio di MUTT WILLIAMS, secondo me è riuscito. Molti hanno detestato la scena alla Tarzan, ma secondo me è che i tempi sono diversi e quindi siamo tutti più critici. Il film è infatti costellato di trovate che oggi giudichiamo ingenue ma che quindici-vent’anni fa non avremmo avuto problemi ad accettare. Ad esempio la scena della bomba atomica… Ma la verosimiglianza qui DEVE essere sacrificata a favore dell’avventura e del divertimento… E’ un film di Indiana Jones, e Indy se la cava sempre. Spielberg è stato bravo a capire questo e a fare un film in linea coi precedenti. Non convince del tutto il McGuffin della storia; l’arca dell’alleanza e il Graal erano più affascinanti, c’era un che di mistico, vedi le prove che Indy deve affrontare nell’Ultima crociata per salvare il padre… Ma d’altronde ci siamo spostati dagli anni Trenta ai Cinquanta, e Spielberg e Lucas con questo soggetto hanno comunque fatto un furbata (parentesi: Indiana Jones e l’ultima crociata per me è il migliore della serie, con quell’incipit eccezionale in cui il compianto River Phoenix interpretava il giovane Indy). GIUDIZIO: Un ottimo film, Spielberg è sempre Spielberg e sa come fare il suo lavoro. Ma poi, mettetevi nei suoi panni: fai conto di essere uno scrittore, e ti dicono: devi fare un libro in base al tuo stile di vent’anni fa! Ma nel frattempo tu sei cambiato, scrivi in maniera diversa. Spielberg va ammirato solo per questo. E lo stesso vale per Harrison Ford che ha saputo cavarsela alla grande. Insomma, esperimento riuscito.

NOTE: Spielberg, Lucas e Ford al festival di Cannes hanno annunciato che se il film andrà bene non avranno problemi ad andare ancora oltre con la saga… C’è in giro il rumor secondo cui il sequel sarebbe incentrato più su Mutt Williams che su Indy, un po’ come avveniva nell’Ultima crociata dove c’era Sean Connery che faceva il padre. Effettivamente a me questo nome così immediato e incisivo – Mutt Williams – mi ha fatto subito pensare a possibili titoli di futuri film i cui “Indiana Jones e…” potrebbe essere sostituito da “Mutt Williams e…”. Staremo a vedere.

Look, it’s not as if I expected the classic brilliance of ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’, or the gory humour of ‘Temple of Doom’. It’s virtually impossible to eclipse chilled monkey brain dessert, but I expected more, I did. After all, Steven’s had 19 years to polish the wry jokes and construct a compelling storyline. What’s the man been doing?

Just after the opening credits, Harrison Ford pilots a fridge out of a nuclear blast, but the stunt evidently wore him out for the remainder of the movie. He may be 65 years of age, but that’s no excuse for strolling into a burial chamber to pick up his artefact and ambling out again. There was a tragic lack of ingenious booby traps. Where were the poison darts, boiling lava and lethal giant trundling boulders? As far as I’m concerned, if Harrison can’t roll, charge, swing or leap out of airplanes in inflatable dinghies, it’s time he retired the whip. Even swarms of killer ants failed to add menace to the picture. It simply felt like the movie suffered from an ant infestation.

On one occasion, Indy escapes a pit of dry quicksand when it’s BARELY UP TO HIS CHEST. His chest! And if he’d been left there, it might have been up to his chin by the end of the movie. The only thing in any mortal danger was the sense of drama.

I’m still not sure what the story was about. Something about a crystal skull which has to be brought somewhere or other for some reason or other. Even the skull was a disappointment; far from being a special effects triumph of glass with fully functional hinged jaw, it looked more like a gob of fluorescent chewing gum.

The arch villain, Irina Spalko, stumbled into the film after taking a wrong turn on her way to a Bond movie. In a brave career move, Cate Blanchett brings an evil pantsuit to the role which makes her arse look about three times bigger than it is. Spalko spends a lot of time and energy running around after a big gob of fluroescent chewing gum, when she could have fulfilled her vocation as a dominatrix by simply stealing Indy’s whip. I spent most of the movie fantasising about being spanked by Cate Blanchett.

Unfortunately, the fantasy was better than the film

Wer sich noch gut daran erinnern kann, wann er das letzte Mal mit kindlicher Begeisterung dem Kinostart eines Films entgegengefiebert, alle Vorberichte gierig verschlungen, dann mit zitternden Händen endlich die Eintrittskarte zum Abriss bereitgehalten hat und schließlich die letzten Meter zum Vorführsaal mit einem wilden Rudel Schmetterlingen im Bauch entlanggeeilt ist, um schnell noch den bestmöglichen Sitzplatz zu ergattern, bevor die Lichter ausgingen und der Projektor endlich, endlich zu rattern begann, der hat entweder ein lebhaftes Erinnerungsvermögen, das problemlos Erfahrungen wiederbeleben kann, die schon mehrere Jahrzehnte zurückliegen, oder aber er gehört zu jener fragwürdigen Spezies, der die Leinwand ein echtes Ersatzleben bietet. Mit dem großen Ereignischarakter ist es im Gegenwartskino nämlich leider nicht weit her. Der mediale Overkill von Werbekampagnen, die gerne mal die 200 Millionen-Dollar-Marke knacken, gibt sich zwar alle Mühe, selbst mittelmäßige Produktionen zu vermeintlichen Sensationen aufzublasen, den Adrenalinanteil beim Publikum können sie jedoch nur geringfügig ankurbeln, und das Zeitfenster zur DVD-Auswertung ist in den meisten Fällen ohnehin allerhöchstens nur noch ein Bullauge. Wer allerdings daraus schließen will, dass sich das Publikum und seine Bedürfnisse eben verändert hätten (und nicht etwa in erster Linie eine pappsatte Industrie schuld ist), der muss sich gehörig darüber wundern, wie groß die Sehnsucht nach Anachronismen werden kann, wenn nur das richtige Angebot da ist. Dass dazu eine altbewährte Formel und ein Filzhut schon ausreichen können, wer hätte das ernsthaft bezweifeln können? Welcome back, Dr. Jones, good to have you around again.

Nicht, dass die Rückkehr des Mannes, der sich selbst unter heißester Wüstensonne nicht von seiner Lederjacke trennt, ohne omnipräsenten Werbeaufwand vonstatten gegangen wäre – im Gegenteil natürlich (und zwar mit einem Budget von mindestens 150 Millionen US-Dollar). Den Sensationscharakter allerdings bringt die bloße Existenz des Films bereits ganz von selbst mit sich und reicht zurück bis in den peruanischen Dschungel von 1936 oder einen Nachtclub in Shanghai im Jahr zuvor. Wie auch immer man sich da entscheiden mag, spätestens beim Öffnen der Bundeslade jedenfalls war das Schicksal des unkonventionellen Archäologieprofessors mit krankhafter Schlangenphobie und ausgeprägtem Vaterkomplex (von dem damals allerdings noch niemand wusste) bereits besiegelt. So wie seine kreativen Wegbegleiter sich in der vielleicht berühmtesten Überblendung der Filmgeschichte das Paramount-Logo einfach mal schnell zueigen gemacht hatten, war Indiana Jones 1981 unumkehrbar in das kollektive Bewusstsein westlicher Popkultur eingetaucht.

Doch dabei ging es nicht um die bloße Figur alleine, sondern vielmehr um ein ganzes Stil- und Erzählkonzept mit klaren und unumstößlichen Koordinaten, von denen her sich der Wiedererkennungswert eines Phänomens definierte, das auch nach 27 Jahren ganz offensichtlich immer noch keinen einzigen Funken seiner Faszination eingebüßt hat. 1989 hatte Henry Jones jr. zwar bereits sein (vermeintlich) letztes Leinwandabenteuer bestanden, doch weder in den Köpfen und Träumen seiner Fans noch den Bilanzbüchern seiner Lizenznehmer war er tatsächlich für immer in den Sonnenuntergang geritten. In einer Flut aus Comics, Romanen, Videospielen, Themenparks und der endlosen Palette von Merchandising lebte das Prinzip Indy weiter und sorgte beständig dafür, auf keinen Fall in Vergessenheit zu geraten. Selbst das eher verhalten entgegengenommene TV-Spinoff „The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles“ mit ganzen drei Indy-Versionen in verschiedenen Altersstufen (und sogar einem winzigen Gastauftritt von Harrison Ford selber) konnte die Figur nicht entzaubern. Warum also sollte eine Rückkehr auf die große Leinwand fast zwei Jahrzehnte später etwas anderes sein als die logische Konsequenz aus echter Unkaputtbarkeit?

Für Lucasfilms und Paramount war dabei sicherlich vor allem die eine große Zahl ein ganz entscheidendes Argument: 1,2 Milliarden. So viele US-Dollar nämlich sollen „Raiders of the lost ark“, „Temple of doom“ und „Last Crusade“ angeblich bislang eingespielt haben, Lizenzrechte vermutlich nicht eingerechnet. Das ist eine Menge Holz (oder Papier), und so lag es eigentlich nur am Duett Lucas / Spielberg, das Prinzip Indiana Jones noch einmal dort auszuspielen, wo es ursprünglich hingehört – auf der großen Leinwand eben. Wie viele Storylines und Drehbuchversionen dabei entstanden sind, und wie viele Autoren verschlissen wurden, wissen wahrscheinlich nur die Buchhalter von der Skywalker Ranch. Der MacGuffin sei es gewesen, der Lucas über all die Jahre Kopfzerbrechen bereitet hätte, derjenige archäologische Plunder also (Bundeslade, Sankara Steine, heiliger Gral), der den Film zumindest auf der Oberfläche in Gang setzt. Nichts sei gut und groß genug gewesen, bis, tja, bis für Lucas die Erleuchtung in Gestalt eben jenes sagenumwobenen Kristallschädels kam, um den sich dann endlich eine echte Indy-Geschichte stricken ließ. Das mag man glauben oder auch nicht, die Erwartungshaltung schürt es aber allemal.

Mit dem unglaublichen Druck von 19 Jahren auf den Schultern also und einem Millionenpublikum, das die originalen drei Filme in- und auswendig kennt, genau weiß, wer, wie und was Indiana Jones ist, hat, darf und will, und das eine ebenso abstrakt-klare wie konkret-diffuse Vorstellung davon hat, wie die Rückkehr ihres Lieblingshelden auszusehen hat, und wie eben nicht, flimmerte schließlich am 18. Mai 2008 auf der ungemein werbewirksamen Plattform des 61. Filmfestivals von Cannes und begleitet von echter Vorabhysterie dasjenige zum ersten Mal über die Leinwand, worauf so viele so lange gewartet, und vor dem nicht wenige auch gehörige Angst hatten. Beunruhigendes gab es kurz zuvor bereits mit fragwürdiger Quellenlage im Netz zu lesen, und so war die Premierenpresse schon mal vorgewarnt. Ziemlich gemischt fielen demgemäss auch die ersten Reaktionen aus, und es war eingetreten, wofür Lucas bereits im Vorfeld aktive Schadensbegrenzung betrieben hatte: der Kritik gefiel sein Film nicht besonders. Zu bemüht, zu unoriginell, zu unzeitgemäß – so oder ähnlich war man sich weitestgehend einig, erst recht an der Croisette, wo Indy als alles überschattender Platzhirsch aufgetreten war, ohne überhaupt irgendetwas mit dem Wettbewerb selber zu tun zu haben. Das nahm man ihm selbstredend gerne übel.

Mit dem Film selber jedoch hat das alles herzlich wenig zu tun, und man würde einen entscheidenden Fehler begehen, ginge man davon aus, dass Indy 1981 von der professionellen Kritik merklich wärmer empfangen oder auch nur eines der vorherigen Sequels nicht gegen seine Vorgänger ausgespielt worden wäre (selten etwa wurde zum originalen „Raiders“ Unqualifizierteres gesagt als in jener legendären Kritik des damaligen Spiegel-Kulturchefs, die heute nur noch verständnisloses Kopfschütteln hervorrufen kann). Von einer Verbesserung der Bedingungen war also kaum auszugehen, und wie um alte Traditionen noch einmal aufleben zu lassen, war sich selbst der Archäologenverband nicht zu schade, dem Treiben des Mannes mit dem Faible für mythologisch vorbelastete Fundstücke allen Ernstes wieder einmal Rufschädigung vorzuwerfen – man kann es eben nicht allen recht machen. Und so waren es vor allem die Fans des Franchise, deren Zustimmung im Fokus der Macher lag. Die große Aufgabe des neuen Films müsste es schließlich sein, Tradition und Erneuerung unter einen (Fedora-) Hut zu bringen, und dabei dennoch nicht so zu tun, als sei die Filmgeschichte zwischenzeitlich stehen geblieben.

Vielleicht war es die klügste Entscheidung von allen, Indy etwas zu erlauben, was anderen Filmhelden im Normalfall eher den Hals brechen würde und deshalb meistens mehr oder weniger trickreich ausbleibt. Während der bekannteste Geheimagent seiner Majestät etwa alle paar Jahre einer Verjüngungskur unterzogen werden muss, um überleben zu können, ist Dr. Jones tatsächlich mit seinem Publikum gealtert – freilich ohne merkliche Anteile an Kondition und Schlagkraft einzubüßen (und das ganz ohne Martial Arts). Exakt 19 Jahre zeitliche Deckung erlaubt sich der Film, und so darf Harrison Ford zwar immer noch in derselben Montur, zugleich aber auch mit ehrenhaft ergrauter Mähne auftreten (wobei die Legende natürlich den Vortritt bekommt, und wohl deshalb die berühmte Silhouette das erste ist, was Indy als Indy identifiziert). Und weil Spielberg seit „Hook“ die ewige Kindheit gegen die Vaterschaft ausgetauscht und Lucas mittlerweile (für manchen Anhänger schmerzhaft) bewiesen hat, dass er den fiktionalen Generationswechsel für ein probates Mittel hält, um Altbewährtes fortzuführen, bekommt der (vermeintlich?) lebenslange Junggeselle Indy im Verlauf des Films tatsächlich einen unehelichen Sohn an die Seite gestellt. Die Funktion von Shia LaBeouf war zwar trotz akribischer Geheimniskrämerei frühzeitig, vielleicht aber auch ganz absichtlich durchgesickert, doch selbst der unbedarfte Zuschauer kann schon nach den ersten Minuten ohnehin ahnen, was da für ein Verhältnis vorliegt, wenn er Zeuge wird, wie Indy mit dem etwas ungestümen Mutt Williams (ein weiterer Beleg dafür, dass Lucas seine große Begabung für griffige Namen wirklich eingebüßt hat) mal im Wortgefecht liegt, mal eine gemeinsame Flucht auf dem Motorrad besteht (eine schöne Variante der umgekehrten Vater/Sohn-Konstellation aus „Last Crusade“). Und daran ändert sich auch solange nichts, bis es Gewissheit gibt und beide schließlich der Frau gegenüberstehen, die als einzige jemals ein ebenbürtiger Partner für den doch eher anti-emanzipatorischen Professor war: Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen, die wie die meisten Spielberg-Frauendarstellerinnen keine nennenswerte Karriere aufbauen konnte), Indys weibliches Gegenstück aus „Raiders“ und der Zeit davor. Dass Mutt als wilde Mischung aus Brando und Errol Flynn das ungewollte Ergebnis einer gemeinsamen Liebesnacht ist (vermutlich jener einzigen, die es jemals in einem Indy-Film gegeben hat), muss man erst mal verdauen – aber warum eigentlich nicht? Marion jedenfalls ist damit endlich auch im Spielberg-Universum angekommen, in dem Frauen bekanntlich und ausnahmslos nur dann akzeptabel sind, wenn sie als Mütter fungieren – vermutlich also auch ein rückwirkendes Zugeständnis von George Lucas an die in Genderfragen geordnete Weltsicht seines Partners.

Unabhängig von dieser zentralen Figurenkonstellation, die „Crystal Skull“ zum echten Familienfilm macht und dem Sohn über weite Strecken diejenigen Actionsequenzen zumutet, die früher der Vater selber abgeliefert hätte, ist der neue Film vor allem eine gutgelaunte Variationssammlung aller bewährten Indy-Ingredienzien rund um Skorpione und Schlangen, Treibsand und Tempelbauten, versteckte Geheimgänge und verdeckte Falltüren, wenn auch ohne die obligatorischen Nazis, dafür aber mit einer Abordnung nicht weniger allmachtbesessener Russen (an deren Spitze eine akzentsichere Cate Blanchett sichtliches Vergnügen am bösen Spiel zeigt), vor allem aber mit einem gehörigen Augenzwinkern angesichts auch der absurdesten Plotwendungen und der unübertrefflichen (oder ganz einfach: saugeilen) Coolness Harrison Fords, der endlich wieder dort ist, wo er hingehört (und so selbst das filmische Entsetzen von „Firewall“ vergessen lässt). Das ist alles nicht neu, aber das soll und darf es auch nicht. Indiana Jones ist Indiana Jones ist Indiana Jones, und damit die unendliche Variation eines fest abgesteckten Regelkanons, in dem man sich selbst nach zwei Jahrzehnten Funkstille jederzeit willkommen, geborgen und zuhause fühlen kann – und für 124 Minuten ein bisschen das Gefühl haben darf, dass die Indy-Filme vielleicht selber magische Artefakte sind, die es auf ganz unerklärliche Weise möglich machen, die Zeit doch tatsächlich für einen Augenblick zurückzudrehen.

It’s 3am PST.  I just got home from a midnight showing of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.  I was the only person in the theatre (Rio Theatre by Commercial Drive Station in Vancouver) who actually dressed up as Indy, although, to be fair, even I hedged my bets and went as geriatric Henry Jones Jr. III (replete with walking stick and a bent-over, cantankerous gait).

Quick review before I try to catch a wink.  It’s a goddamn work night, people.

REVIEW FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN’T SEEN IT YET:

You should see it.  I mean, who goes to see only 2 movies out of a trilogy or only 3 movies out of a quadwhatever.  Brace yourself for a gray Indy with very loose face skin, and brace yourself for “modern” special effects and some pointless CGI, which makes for some scenes where you go “ain’t no way they survived that” or “yeah right, they’re still conscious after that kind of impact.”

Thankfully, though, it’s kept sufficiently on a leash to be able to suspend your disbelief one more time.  For old times’ sake.  And for a good time.  Call on Indy.

REVIEW FOR THOSE WHO HAVE SEEN IT (spoilers!):

It wasn’t as bad as I braced myself for, but could have been better.  I mean, aliens?  Roswell?  51?  Shit that’s “kinda” magnetic, but only sorta?  The Nazca lines were a nice touch, but their mention merely superficial.  The gophers/prairie dogs/rodents were totally pointless and should have been left on the cutting room floor.

Indy is DEFINITELY too old to be doing this, and the special effects just made things worse.  I guess you could say I like things a little more low-tech.  Some of those falls appeared buttery soft, like a splish-splash in a bird bath.  Seriously now.  You don’t just tumble down a Niagara-sized waterfall as if it were a waterslide at some freeway motel.  This movie should have been made a decade ago at the latest so that Harrison Ford would be sprightlier and less saggy, and special effects wouldn’t have to be used so extensively.  Nor would we need a Henry Jones, Jr. IV to divert our attention from Grampa Simpson’s Ravages of Old Age ™.

Still, for all this whining, it’s worth seeing if you’re in any way an Indiana Jones fan.  And who isn’t?  No, I don’t want to know those of you who aren’t.  It’s got some feverish chase scenes, is good-humoured without too many cheesy lines (though there are some, pointlessly stuck in there as if a Shrek writer walked into a room), and has visual appeal to the Machu Picchu set.

It has some overt references to pop culture and itself, like the giant 51 on the warehouse door, or the Ark itself peeking out of a crate freshly busted open during a pursuit of some other relic.  However, more subtle ones are in place also, like the Atomic Café.  Or McCarthyist witch hunts.  Or a drag race on an arid road out in the desert somewhere, while we wait for the first appearance of the actor known as Bob Falfa in one of his prior incarnations.  And that bomb detonation scene kicked ass—which also means that if Indy doesn’t get killed by bullets first, then he’ll most definitely eventually succumb to some kind of radiation exposure-related illness, ridiculous lead-lined fridge ride or no ridiculous lead-lined fridge ride.

All in all, it’s not the best one in the series.  In fact, it might be the worst one.  But, like Isaac Davis’ orgasms, even the worst one is still right on the money.  And to riff off those posters in the office of Murray Hewitt, Deputy Cultural Attaché to NZ, I’d have to sum this one up with: “Don’t expect too much… you won’t be disappointed!”

Escena de Indiana Jones y la Ultima Cruzada

Como es sabido, estaba planeado que el Profesor Henry Jones apareciera en la cuarta parte de la saga Indiana Jones, pero cuando Sean Connery se negó a repetir el papel, el guión tuvo que ser cambiado. Sin embargo, para la anunciada Indiana Jones 5, Lucas y Spielberg están nuevamente negociando con el actor para que vuelva. Si bien por un lado Connery es famoso por su terquedad en asuntos profesionales, ya una vez lograron convencerlo en una situación igual, en la cinta Never Say Never Again. Pero por otro lado, está el “pequeño” problema de la situación del personaje, que quedó muy clara en la cuarta entrega, y será cuestión de ver como piensan subsanarla.

Erst diese Woche rutschte Harrison Ford und seiner Filmpartnerin Karen Ellen unabhängig voneinander die Nachricht heraus, dass ein fünfter Teil von Indiana Jones bereits in Arbeit sei und bislang aktiv am Drehbuch gearbeitet werde. Doch die Produktion ist wohl noch nicht so weit fortgeschritten, als dass nicht noch jemand entscheiden könnte, dass er bei diesem Film mitspielen wolle – zumindest wenn dieser jenige Sean Connery heißt. Dem ehemaligen Darsteller von James Bond stehen laut den Produzenten Steven Spielberg und George Lucas angeblich alle Türen offen, wieder in die Rolle Henry Jones als Vater von Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) zu schlüpfen. Sean Connery verkörperte Henry Jones bereits im dritten Indian-Jones-Film “Der letzte Kreuzzug” (1989), lehnte aber ein Engagement in Teil 4 “Indiana Jones und das Königreich des Kristallschädels” ab. Eigentlich wollte der 79-Jährige überhaupt mit der Filmerei endgültig Schluss machen, doch vielleicht gibt es nun ja den berühmten Rücktritt vom Rücktritt. Bislang ist all dies nur ein Gerücht, in dem ein Insider von Sean Connery erfahren haben will, dass er “gerne noch einmal in mein Kostüm schlüpfen wolle, wenn das Drehbuch gut ist.” Wir warten gespannt auf neue Information diesbezüglich. Bei einer Zusage wären wir jedenfalls gerührt, und nicht geschüttelt, Mr. Ex-Bond…

Justice has finally prevailed for one of the oldest and shadiest cases the justice system had to offer. California state prosecutors elected to drop their case against four of seven men accused in the grisly murder of a San Francisco officer of the peace nearly forty years ago. Henry Jones, 73, Ray Boudreaux, 66, Richard Brown, 68, and Harold Taylor, 60, were allegedly involved in the infamous Black Liberation Army, an extremist offshoot of the Black Panther Party, alleged to have robbed banks, bombed a police funeral, and waged a vicious war against those of societal authority in a ruthless, vicious, five-year campaign that spanned from coast to coast.

The men were named in the murder of Sergeant John V. Young during an attack on San Francisco’s Ingleside police station during the summer of 1971. “Certainly, the state’s decision was unexpected,” said Jones’ defense attorney, John Philipsborn. He added, “Our hope all along, especially for the four whose cases were dismissed, was that there was not enough evidence to pursue cases against them.”

This case was peculiar as it could never seem to be fully resolved. That mattered little as California resurrected the case in two years ago, filing charges against eight men whom were alleged members of the organization. One of the eight men, Anthony Bottom, pleaded no contest to conspiracy to commit voluntary manslaughter after a pre-trial hearing. He was sentenced to a year of jail time and three years of probation; the jail time was waived as he already served the same amount of time while awaiting trial.

Prosecutors were victorious in securing a sentence of five years probation for 61-year old Herman Bell, the alleged gunman in the Young murder, after he pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. Both men are currently serving life sentences for the murder of two New York police officers before the Young homicide.

All members of the B.L.A. involved in the Young murder have had to come face to face with a judge except for one. 60-Year old Francisco Torres stands as the only member of the group to abstain from a court appearance, a reality that is quickly about to change. California state prosecutors believe that they have a fingerprint of Torres on an abandoned cigarette lighter that was jettisoned at the scene of the crime.

Torres’ attorney, Charles Bourdon, said Monday that his client “steadfastly maintains his innocence.” They have chosen to reject a plea deal with Bourdon planning to file a motion to dismiss the charges outright. Torres is scheduled to return to court on Aug. 10 to set a preliminary hearing date.

Tras revisar Vértigo con una lectura más profunda, es imposible dejar de cuestionarse los supuestos logros argumentales de los trhillers psicológicos actuales. Películas que nos maravillan con sus inesperados giros de guión, donde nada acaba siendo lo que parece y donde el personaje principal sucumbe ante una crisis mental que le está alejando de una realidad que sólo el espectador cree conocer. Hace más de cuarenta y cinco años Hitchcock cocinaba con ese material… borx

Hitchcock nos presenta una historia que parece simple: un policía retirado que debe vigilar la esposa de un amigo. Sin embargo desarrolla el guión de tal forma que nos va atrapando con cada minuto que pasa y a pesar de ser una la idea principal, en nuestra cabeza se tejen innumerables incógnitas.
Con esta película, este estupendo director da una clase magistral de como utilizar un reparto escaso en cantidad pero enorme en calidad. Además no le es necesario crear una intriga insostenible como en las películas Premoción o Deja Vu, sino que el suspense se genera espontáneamente por el espectador a ver las escenas.
Sin duda es una película que yo recomiendo para los amantes del suspenso y la intriga, créanme que no los va a defraudar. NicoWilton Mdq

Indiana Jones, der Held meiner Kindheit. Ich weiß noch genau, wann und wo ich ihm zum ersten Mal begegnet bin: Ich war mit meinen Eltern auf Mallorca und schaute mir an der Rezeption den kleinen Goldmann Taschenbuchständer an. Ich sah einen Mann mit Hut und die Figuren der Osterinseln und wusste, noch ehe ich den Titel („Indiana Jones und das Geheimnis der Osterinseln“ – im Übrigen ein eher schlechtes Buch aus der Reihe) gelesen hatte, dass ich es haben musste. Nun, leider weigerten sich meine Eltern, da sie der Meinung waren, es wäre noch nichts für mich. Aber in der Mitte der Ferien besuchte uns ein Arbeitskollege meines Vaters, der selbst Indiana Jones Fan war und er schenkte mir eben dieses Buch. Was war ich stolz. Blöd nur, dass mir das Buch damals so gar nicht gefiel (was mir aber mit allen Büchern Wolfgang Hohlbeins bis heute so geht). Kaum aus dem Urlaub zurück bekam ich von eben diesem Arbeitskollegen das Adventure zum Film „…und der letzte Kreuzzeug“ geschenkt. Nach der Schule musste ich fortan erst einmal mindestens eine Stunde spielen, bis ich auch nur im Entferntesten bereit dazu war, Hausaufgaben zu machen. Es war der Wahnsinn. Doch Indiana Jones wurde durch ein allgemeines Interesse an Geschichte und Archäologie abgelöst, bis ich ihn in der 6. Klasse wiederentdeckte (in der Chronik des Films). Bald schon sollte ich zum ersten Mal „Indiana Jones und der Letzte Kreuzzug“ sehen. War das toll! Bis heute habe ich diesen Film an die 20-mal gesehen, wenn nicht öfter. Ich kann die Texte mitsprechen, die Musik (dank meiner Musikalität) mitsummen und weiß sogar, wie viele Minuten Indiana Jones nach dem ersten Treffen mit Elsa Schneider dazu benötigt, sie zu verführen (es sind 15). Der Satz „Die Suche nach dem Gral ist die Suche nach dem göttlichen in uns allen“, den Henry Jones Senior zu Indiana, Marcus Brody und Sallah am Ende des Filmes sagt, ist meines Erachtens einer der besten Sätze, die jemals in irgendeinem Drehbuch standen. Die anderen Filme sollten mich ähnlich, wenn auch nicht ganz so sehr begeistern. Die Spiele habe ich mir wenig später gekauft und bis heute unendlich oft durchgespielt. Schon bald werde ich mit das neue Spiel kaufen und auch „Die Legende der Kaisergruft“ wird irgendwann noch mal über Ebay ersteigert. Ja, Indiana Jones hat einen großen Teil meines Lebens mitbestimmt. Doch etwas fehlte immer. Zwar hatte ich die tolle DCC / Silver Screen Ausgabe von „Raiders Of The Lost Ark“ und die (grottige) Warner Version von „…und der letzte Kreuzzug“, doch Teil 2 war nicht zu bekommen und jetzt, da es Internet gibt, bezahlt man dafür ein Vermögen. Gut, als Bootlegs noch legal zu kaufen waren, habe ich natürlich zugegriffen, aber die Soundqualität ist eine Frechheit – aber dazu später mehr. Als nun endlich Teil 4 in die Kinos kam (der mal abgesehen von den Aliens und der Hochzeit wirklich nicht sooo schlecht war) gab es plötzlich die Pressemitteilung, das Ende 2008 die Soundtracks komplett veröffentlich werden sollten. Geil! Das Ding wurde gleich bestellt. Ja, jetzt ist der Moment gekommen, wo es wirklich nur um das Boxset geht. Ich bewerte die CDs in der Reihenfolge, in der ich sie gehört habe.

CD 2: Indiana Jones Und Der Temple des Todes

„Temple Of Doom“ ist wohl der von Fans am meisten gesuchte Soundtrack, da er seit Mitte/Ende der 1980er Jahre erst nur noch in Japan und dann überhaupt nicht mehr erhältlich war. Zudem ist er der wohl experimentellste, wie z.B. das Liebesthema von Indy und Willie bezeugt, dass dann auch gleich mal fehlt. Was für ein Honk ist daran schuld? Man sollte ihm alle Haare ausreißen und ihn über die Weinberge jagen! Aber egal. Der Soundtrack ist auch ohne diesen Cue extrem toll. „Anything Goes“ wurde in der Original kantonesischen Version dargeboten, die man auch im Film hört (ja, Kate Capshaw singt und das gar nicht mal schlecht!). Es macht einfach Spaß, diesen alten Soundtrack in super gemastertem Ton hören zu dürfen. Die düsteren Gesänge des Kaliordens, das verspielte „The Scroll / The Pankot Palace“ und das majestätische „Short Round’s Theme“… fast alles, was sich Fans seit jeher in dieser Qualität wünschen. Ja, diese CD werde ich noch sehr oft hören.

CD 3: Indiana Jones Und Der Letzte Kreuzzug

Wie schon gesagt hat dieser Film mir immer am meisten bedeutet. Ich habe versucht, zu ergründen, warum das so ist und die Antwort ist so simpel wie logisch: Der Film hat eine sakrale Atmosphäre, die fast vollständig auf der Musik basiert. Der Soundtrack von 1989 gehört allerdings zum miesesten, was neben „Tempel des Todes“ veröffentlich wurde: Schlechte Tonqualität (man muss sich mal überlegen, dass die Einspielung der City Of Prague Philharmonics besser klang!!!), über die Hälfte der Musik fehlt (vor allem wichtige Themen) und die Musik wurde laut John Williams so sortiert, dass sie am besten ins Ohr geht (und ab und an schnitt man einfach die Musik nach Belieben zusammen). Tja, Klassenziel verfehlt. Wo sind wir denn? Easy Listening gibt’s einen Raum weiter. Auch die Verpackung war ein Graus, alles wirkte so lieblos und ungeschickt. Ganz anders die aktuelle Version. Anstelle der willkürlich angeordneten 13 gibt es hier 19 Tracks, die Musik hält sich strikt an den Ablauf des Films und nein, das stört den hörfluss in keiner Weise. „Indy’s Very First Adventure“ ist endlich komplett drauf, die erste Version des Gral Themas fehlt zwar, ist aber später auf der Bonus CD zu finden. Die Tonqualität hat endlich einen audiophilen Level erreicht. Es ist eine Freude. Was da vorher alles nicht zu hören war… das erinnert mich ein wenig an die Neuveröffentlichungen der Genesis CDs. Sehr entspannend ist auch der Fakt, dass der totgedudelte „Raiders March“ (ist inzwischen Standard einer jeden Bläserklasse diverser Integrierter Gesamtschulen geworden) fehlt. Steven Spielberg fand das auch schon in den 80ern anscheinend sehr toll, zumindest hat er diesen Umstand extra im Booklet vermerkt (ein Schelm wer denkt, dass er für den Rerelease neue Linear Notes geschrieben hätte…). Richtig schön wird es auf der CD ab Track 16 („The Canyon Of The Crescent Moon“). Wer die Star Wars Soundtracks für das Maß aller Dinge hält (oder gar Harry Potter) soll da einfach mal hinein hören. John Williams hat soviel mehr drauf. Ab 02:30 hört man im Rerelease plötzlich Themen, die einem vorher, dank des schon erwähnten miesen Mixes, bisher entgangen waren. Selbst ich als Hardcorefan musste überrascht aufhorchen. Sind meine Ohren wirklich so eingerostet, dass mir das Gral Thema in „The Penitant Man Will Pass“ entgangen ist? Oder war es wieder einmal der Mix? Ich glaube es muss dieser gewesen sein, denn im alten Mix klang einfach alles dumpf. “A Riverside County pastor will spend 12 years behind bars for his role in a multimillion-dollar investment scam that drew in more than 500 people who, in some cases, believed they were giving money to“divinely inspired” causes, a prosecutor said today.

Robert Jennings, 59, of Perris, was one of three men who took part in the three-year scheme that cost victims more than $28 million, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Ruth Pinkel.

The defendant, who ministered at the New Life Community Fellowship, was convicted in August of mail fraud and multiple counts of wire and securities fraud. His co-defendants, Arthur Simburg, 64, of Portland, Ore., and Henry Jones, 53, of Santa Monica, were convicted of similar charges.

Los Angeles-based U.S. District Judge Percy Anderson imposed the 12-year term on Jennings, and a nine-year term on Simburg, on Monday.

Jones, the mastermind of the scam, will likely be sentenced early next year, according to Pinkel, who said the defendant has changed attorneys four times since he was indicted last year.

According to court documents, Jennings and Simburg, who pleaded guilty in April, were promoters of the scam, while Jones, a former record company executive, handled most of the ill-gotten funds.

Jennings and Simburg ran Tri Energy, a Kentucky coal mining venture the defendants led investors to believe was profitable when that, in fact, was not the case, according to the government.

The purported mining venture raised more than $17 million. The men also actively promoted an investment opportunity offered via Jones’ firm, Marina Investors, later renamed Global Village Records, according to court documents.

The investment entailed securing funds to facilitate the transfer of 20,000 tons of gold — a figure that would have constituted roughly 16 percent of the world’s stock of the precious metal — an extremely unlikely scenario, according to the government.

Victims were told that if they supplied funds to cover the cost of moving the secret stash, they could realize 300 percent returns in several months, court documents show.

The defendants claimed legal and security risks were extraordinary because the gold was being transferred from Israel to the United Arab Emirates — a transaction that would stir international controversy due to the “sensitive political relationship between the countries involved,” the court documents state.

Investors were solicited at spiritual retreats, and Jennings and Simburg would often hold evening conference calls that would include group prayer, during which “investors would be told that profits from the gold investment were going to be used to fund `humanitarian projects”’ and the “gold investment was `divinely inspired,”’ according to the indictment.

In reality, investors’ money was sunk into a Ponzi scheme, in addition to funding the defendants’ personal expenses, prosecutors said.

Jones, who could draw a 200-year sentence, bought a Porsche, a Ferrari and several homes, and also used some of the ill-gotten gains to prop up his record business, Pinkel said.”
