In 1998, i was diagnosed to have been infected with Hepatitis B Virus. Like all Filipinos setting their eyes on working abroad for economic reasons, and found out they won’t qualify because they failed the blood tests, i was devastated.

After the initial shock had settled down, i began reading all about hepatitis B by standing for 2-3 hours beside one bookshelf in Ali Mall National Bookstore, because i can’t afford to buy the book. Back then, 60% of Philippine population have hepatitis, 20% of these were “carriers”. (I wonder how it is now.)

Later on, i went to the PGH to get another blood test for free, hoping that the first tests could be wrong.

After looking at the result, the PGH doctor confirmed that i do have hepatitis B. I then asked “what are my options”. He said, there are undergoing research on the subject and i just have to wait for it. He also added that i should come back after 6 months for another test. (All they could do was to monitor how my condition is progressing.)

In the meantime, i was advised to accept my case as one of the sad realities of life – that i potentially have to live with it ’til my last breath. And so i did.

I went living like a normal person and married somebody who could not be infected or is properly immunized from the virus and had a son with her. Aside from vaccination, we had to separate the kid’s utensils from ours, just to protect him, or so we thought.

One day, my son complained to me about dark spots on his foot where mosquitos have bitten. I checked and found out the same symptoms i have for vasculitis (confirmed in 2006 at St. Luke’s). Vasculitis is the hypersensitivity of the immune system – a condition when one’s own immune system is attacking not just the bacteria but our own cells as well, hence the blackening of the skin. To add, vasculitis, in my case, was a direct result of my having hepatitis according to the experts at St. Luke’s Hospital. And without doubt, my son also had the same hepatitis i had.

My son’s infection of the virus was never acceptable. And so i cranked up my independent research on the subject, until i came across a patent titled “Electrically Conductive Methods And Systems for Treatment of Blood and Other Body Fluids And/Or Synthetic Fluids With Electric Forces” by Steven Kaali & Peter M. Schwolsky.

If you try to examine this patent, it was granted to the inventors on August 18, 1992. Remember, i was diagnosed in 1998, and the doctors then were saying that “there is no cure for the hepa virus infection yet” and “research are still ongoing”. Aren’t these doctors doing their homework?

I studied the whole patent, and constructed a device based on Dr. Robert Beck’s circuit design. (Note: Dr. Beck is a DSc. or Doctor of Science, not MD.)

We started using the gadget ever since, and have not purchase a single antibiotic from then on. No more dark spots for my son and me. We even invited mosquitos by opening our screen doors at 6:00 pm just to test and prove to ourselves that the device really work. And it works and continues to be so even today – not just for hepa but for his asthma, too. (Asthma was the reason why we relocated to San Pablo City, in the first place. Less pollution, that is.)

The Hepatitis B virus (HBV) targets men more readily than women, triggering serious complications like cirrhosis and liver cancer, says a new study.

 Men infected with HBV are also six times more likely than women to develop a chronic form of the disease.

 About 400 million people worldwide have chronic hepatitis B, including a form that is highly infectious and can be transmitted through blood, saliva and sexual contact.

 In lab experiments with mice, researchers led by Shuhan Sun, geneticist at the Second Military Medical University, China, found abnormal forms of a protein, apolipoprotein A-I (Apo A-I), in the livers of infected male mice but not infected females.

 They then identified abnormal forms of these Apo A-I proteins in the blood of men infected with HBV, but not in women, says a release of the American Chemical Society (ACS).

 Besides explaining the gender differences, the proteins may provide important markers for tracking the progression of hepatitis B, the scientists suggest.

 Their study has been published online in ACS’ Journal of Proteome Research.

NEW YORK (AP) — Shares of InterMune Inc. fell Tuesday after the biotechnology company said it would discontinue a high-dose of its experimental Hepatitis C treatment in a study because of potential liver damage.

The stock fell $2.03, or 14.5 percent, to $11.99 in midday trading. Shares have traded between $8.66 and $19.12 over the past 52 weeks.

Let me start right here by saying that one of the best things that has ever happened to me, is the fact that I was diagnosed with Hepatitis C about 1 1/2 years ago now. I say that for a couple of reasons. One, is that now I know what has been wrong with me for quite some time now, and that it is not in my head, or a figment of my imagination. It allows me now, to be sick, when I am sick, instead of trying not to be, because I feel guilty.

The other reason, is that since my initial diagnosis, I have put a higher value on life, and the world around me. I think that it is the first time I have seen many things. I look at everything and everyone from a different angle now. For that, I am grateful.

Since I have only made the decision to start blogging about my journey today, for I was not sure if I wanted to lay my life bare for all to see, and for all to know about. My partner tried to deter me, for he is a very private person. He is private to a fault, and I am open and honest to a fault, I suppose. I’ve decided to go ahead with this because it is a way for me to get it out, and I hope to help others go through their journeys with less pain and embarrassment than necessary.

Since it has been a year and a half, the way I’ve decided to do this is to blog whenever the whim strikes me and take you with me on my journey thus far. I have made a lot of notes, and have journaled along the way, so that will help.

Simply put, my initial diagnosis was this, (well, not initial precisely, since it took 7 months from the family doctor’s prognosis to the specialist’s office, and then another 2 months to get all the blood work back) I have HepC, and have had it for over 20 years, with advanced liver disease and cirrhosis.

Being my first blog about this subject, I will leave it here for now, and will get back to you soon.

WASHINGTON, July 8 /U.S. Newswire/ — The (AAPS) is calling for an immediate moratorium on mandatory hepatitis B vaccines for schoolchildren pending further research about dangerous side effects, and has accused school districts which require the shots of practicing medicine without a license.

“Children younger than 14 are three times more likely to die or suffer adverse reactions after receiving hepatitis B vaccines than to catch the disease,” said Jane M. Orient, M.D., executive director of AAPS. “It’s one thing to bar a student from school if he is carrying an infectious disease posing a threat to other children. But to require a questionable medical treatment as a condition of attendance crosses over the line to practicing medicine,” said Dr. Orient.

In the US, hepatitis B is primarily an adult disease, not spread by casual contact. Risk is highly dependent on lifestyle, i.e. multiple sex partners, drug abuse or an occupation with exposure to blood. Yet the CDC recommends all newborns be given this vaccine, and many school districts require it. Even state legislatures are guilty of this medical malpractice. For example, earlier this year, the Ohio State legislature passed a law requiring all schoolchildren to receive three doses of the vaccine.

According to a recent federal government study, serious adverse events after the vaccine — including 48 deaths — are reported three times as frequently as cases of hepatitis B in children under the age of 14. “We suspect the adverse reactions are vastly underreported, as formal long-term studies of vaccine safety have not been completed,” says Dr. Orient. “We find it shocking that government health officials cavalierly dismiss reports of serious adverse vaccine effects as coincidental and that school officials ignore them altogether.”

In calling for the moratorium on hepatitis B mandates, Dr. Orient warns the increasing “vaccine cocktails” administered to children may be hazardous to their health. “Mandates effectively use schoolchildren as research subjects subjected to unproved medical treatment without informed consent, in violation of the Nuremberg Code. If school administrators and government bureaucrats were subject to that code, they could be prosecuted as war criminals,” says Dr. Orient.

A recent study of national vaccine policy published in the Medical Sentinel, the official journal of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, exposes the secret process stacked with special interests that decides vaccine policies of the federal government. The members of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) are often nominated by the drug companies and have substantial financial ties to the drug companies….Members are forbidden to publicly discuss what happens during closed portions of the meetings. The precise scientific, medical, and political bases for the vaccine recommendations are never revealed. 2. Diet diberikan secara berangsur, disesuaikan dengan nafsu makan dan toleransi pendeita.

3. Cukup vitamin dan mineral.

4. Rendah garam atau cairan dibatasi bila terjadi penimbunan garam/air.

5. Mudah dicerna dan tidak merangsang.

6. Bahan makanan yang mengandung gas dihindakan.
Macam-Macam Diet Untuk Penderita Penyakit Hati

Diet 1
Untuk penderita sirosis hati yang berat dan hepatitis akut prekoma.

Biasanya diberikan makanan berupa cairan yang mengandung karbohidrat sederhana misalnya sari buah, sirop, teh manis. Pemberian protein sebaiknya dihindarkan. Bila terjadi penimbunan cairan atau sulit kencing maka pemberian cairan maksimum 1 liter perhari. Diet ini sebaiknya diberikan lebih dari 3 hari.

Diet 2
Diberikan bila keadaan akut atau prekoma sudah dapat diatasi dan mulai timbul nafsu makan.

Diet berbentuk lunak atau dicincang, tergantung keadaan penderita. Asupan protein dibatasi hingga 30 gram perhari, dan lemak diberikan dalam bentuk yang mudah dicerna.

Diet 3
Untuk penderita yang nafsunya cukup baik.

Bentuk makanan lunak atau biasa, tergantung keadaan penderita. Kandungan protein bisa sampai 1 g/kg berat badan, lemak sedang dalam bentuk yang mudah dicerna.

Diet 4
Untuk penderita yang nafsu makannya telah membaik, dapat menerima protein dan tidak menunjukan sirosis aktif.

Bentuk makanan lunak atau biasa, tergantung kesanggupan penderita. Kalori, kandungan protein dan hidrat arang tinggi, lemak, vitamin dan mineral cukup.

Kelompok Makanan Sehari-hari
Secara praktis, makanan sehari-hari dapat dibagi menjadi 3 kelompok :

1. Kelompok kuning

Makanan yang digunakan sebagai sumber energi seperti nasi, kentang, minyak, gula, dan kue. Asupan makanan dari kelompok ini harus ditetapkan jumlahnya perhari.

2. Kelompok hijau

Kelompok makanan yang harus dimakan sesuai kebutuhan. Contohnya sayur-sayuran dan buah-buahan. Karena mengandung serat, makanan ini bisa mencegah sembelit. Makanan ini mengandung pula vitamin dan mineral.

3. Kelompok merah

Terdiri atas makanan banyak protein misalnya daging, telur, ikan dan lain-lain. Konsumsi makanan kelompok ini harus berhati-hati karena bila dikonsumsi dalam jumlah berlebih akan mengakibatkan peningkatan kadar ammonia dalam darah.

Pemilihan Bahan Makanan Bagi Penderita Hepatitis :

1. Hindari makanan yang dapat menimbulkan gas, seperti ubi, singkong, kacang merah, kol, sawi, lobak, nangka, durian dan lain-lain.

2. Hindari makanan yang telah diawetkan seperti sosis, ikan asin, kornet, dan lain-lain.

3. Pilihlah bahan makanan yang kandungan lemaknya tidak banyak seperti daging yang tidak berlemak, ikan segar, ayam tanpa kulit.

4. Sebaiknya pilih sayur-sayuran yang sedikit mengandung serat seperti bayam, wortel, bit, labu siam, kacang panjang muda, buncis muda, daun kangkung dan sebagainya.

5. Bumbu-bumbu jangan terlalu merangsang. Salam, laos, kunyit, bawang merah, bawang putih dan ketumbar boleh dipakai tetapi jangan terlalu banyak.

6. Hindarkan makanan yang terlalu berlemak seperti daging babi, usus, babat, otak, sum-sum dan santan kental.
Bagi penderita hepatitis, terapi diet sangat penting untuk dilakukan. Kandungan gizi pada terapi diet penderita hepatitis berbeda-beda tergantung pada kondisi penderita. Total kalori yang diberikan juga berbeda, tergantung besar badan dan aktifitas penderita. Selain itu, pada umumnya kurang baik jika terlalu banyak mengurangi lemak kecuali bila ada gejala kuning pada mata atau kulit. Lemak yang mengandung banyak asam lemak esensial seperti minyak nabati atau minyak ikan boleh diberikan seperti biasa.

Napas tersengal-sengal pada malam 25 Juni 2007 itu menjadi awal petaka Waskito. Malam itu Waskito sulit bernapas sehingga keluarga melarikannya ke sebuah rumahsakit di Surakarta, Jawa Tengah.

Hasil diagnosis dokter, Waskito positif paru-paru basah.  Sebelas hari lamanya ia opname di rumahsakit itu sembari mengkonsumsi antibiotik jenis streptomycin. Namun, kondisi ayah 5 anak itu tak kunjung membaik.

Muka pucat, tubuh kerap letih, dan nafsu makan berkurang. Selain itu demam dan batuk menghampiri tubuh Waskito yang kian ringkih. Suami Nuk Sudaryanti itu pun segera dilarikan ke sebuah rumahsakit di Jakarta. Di rumahsakit itulah dokter mendiagnosis hepatitis C. Peningkatan kadar SGOT dan SGPT 20 – 40 kali dari ambang normal menandakan adanya kerusakan hati. Ambang normal SGOT 17 – 20 IU dan SGPT 12 – 17 IU.

Penyakit lama

SGPT (Serum Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase) dan SGOT (Serum Glutamic Oxaloacetic Transaminase) merupakan parameter untuk mengetahui kesehatan hati akibat infeksi virus atau bakteri. Hasil cek laboratorium juga menunjukkan kadar bilirubin mencapai 3,48 mg%. Padahal, kadar normal maksimal 1 mg%. Peningkatan bilirubin menyebabkan urin berwarna kemerahan – seperti teh kental – serta bola mata dan kulit kekuningan.

Sayang, kondisi Waskito yang dirawat di Jakarta tak ada perubahan berarti. Oleh karena itu keluarga memutuskan untuk membawanya pulang ke Surakarta. Namun, upaya itu belum menyembuhkan. Virus hepatitis C masih bercokol di tubuhnya. Virus itu sebenarnya telah lama mendekam di tubuh Waskito. Pada 1983 ia divonis positif hepatitis C. Saat itu Waskito bekerja di pelabuhan sebagai tukang las. Waskito kurang memperhatikan kebersihan makanan yang disantap dan kurang berolahraga.

Teripang

Menurut dr Primal Sudjana SpPD-KPTI, spesialis penyakit dalam Rumahsakit Hasan Sadikin Bandung, hepatitis akibat serangan virus. Bila dibiarkan hingga 6 bulan, menyebabkan hepatitis akut. Enam bulan berikutnya, berubah menjadi sirosis atau pengerasan hati. Dalam perkembangannya sirosis berpotensi menjadi kanker hati.

Wiwiek Ady Pramesti tidak pernah menyangka kesibukannya bekerja mendatangkan penderitaan. Awalnya ia menganggap nyeri ulu hati yang beberapa kali menyerang adalah penyakit biasa. Makanya wanita bertubuh jangkung itu tak pernah memeriksakannya ke dokter. Toh hanya dengan mengkonsumsi obat-obatan yang dijual bebas di apotek, penderitaannya bisa diatasi.

Suatu sore di pertengahan Maret 1997, Wiwiek tengah mengikuti rapat perusahaan. Tiba-tiba ibu 1 anak itu menelungkupkan kedua tangan ke bagian ulu hati. Ulu hati sakit sekali serasa dicabik-cabik, kenang Wiwiek. Coba herbal

Thirty-five percent food grade hydrogen peroxide is used. In the eighteenth century, doctors prescribed food grade hydrogen peroxide diluted in water to people to drink. I have been to clinics where AIDS patients use food grade hydrogen peroxide for bathing. They take a gallon of 35% hydrogen peroxide, and dilute it in a bathtub filled with 10 to 20 gallons of water. Thirty-five percent hydrogen peroxide is so strong you can’t put it directly on your skin or drink it except when properly diluted. Otherwise, it will burn you. Three percent peroxide can be sprayed on food, or put 1 tbsp. in a liter of water and soak your vegetables for 20 minutes. You can use it to spray your body after a shower. Ozone is nothing more than oxygen, O2, turned into O3. Ozone is found in nature. Electrical storms produce ozone. The premiere water sterilization technique used by municipalities all over the world is bubbling ozone through water. It doesn’t hurt anything else but it kills all the bacteria, viruses, fungi and pathogens. Ozone is harmless to the human cells when correctly used. However, there are different types of ozone. Ozone electrically produced from air is highly toxic. But, ozone from pure oxygen isn’t. The main difference is that air-produced ozone has nitric acid, nitrous oxides and other nitrogen compounds present with it, but the pure oxygen ozone doesn’t. Even negative ion generators produce ozone and form minute amounts of nitric acid. The contaminants are the toxins, not the ozone used at proper levels. There is a water purifier that outputs a medical grade of ozone. You can apply ozone to yourself at home, either injecting it if you are trained to do this, or by using rectal insufflation. It is absorbed into the blood and carried all over the body. It takes months of flooding the body with oxygen. And people work up to that level very slowly, because if you rush it, if you put too much oxygen in, you are going to stir up so much garbage that the organs of elimination will plug up or become irritated. So there are protocols. There are established dosages. You have to spend time doing this therapy. For example, people who have AIDS have to go to a clinic if they want to sero convert to HIV negative. They have six weeks of IV injections with the ozone therapy on a daily basis.

STABILIZED OXYGEN PRODUCTS

There are stabilized oxygen products, commercially available, about 12 brands of them including Aerox, and Aerobic 0₇, which are very inexpensive. I have interviewed people all over the world getting rid of every disease you can think of, and sports athletes using oxygen therapies to increase their endurance.

TOXINS IN YOUR FOOD, AIR AND WATER

If you were to look at your blood under a microscope, you would see that there are viruses, bacteria, fungi, pathogens, all kinds of garbage pollution in your blood that don’t belong there. That is the reason you are aging prematurely. That is the reason you have a fungus, Candida. That is the reason you are tired and cranky. You need more sleep, and as you get older, you wind down and lose your energy. You figure you should live to be 60, 70 if you’re lucky. But there are people around the world who are living to be 140, 150. We are speaking about the Hunzas, the ancient tribal peoples living in the Indus Valley. You can also live that long and you could give birth when you are over 100. The only difference between them and you is that they have lots of oxygen in their food, water and air. They get their water from ancient glacier melts which are loaded with oxygen, formed back when the oxygen level on this planet was 38 to 50% oxygen. The atmosphere today is around 20% oxygen. Everybody all day long is breathing dirty air. If you live in a city your body is trying to filter two tablespoons full of dirt out of the lungs alone, every single day all day long. The ancient glaciers also have up to 60 trace minerals which are supposed to be in your diet, but which you don’t find anymore because the soils have all been depleted and demineralized in the United States since the 1930s. When you go to the supermarket, you bite into a carrot and it’s bitter because there were no minerals to grow that carrot with. Natural organic carrots grown in mineralized soil are sweet. All the food you eat is contaminated with pesticides and fertilizers and aren’t grown in mineralized soil. The cows in the fields have a time-release hormone-antibiotic compound in their ear, released right into the blood stream hour after hour every day – and you eat the steak. Pesticides are sprayed on the grain given to the cattle and chickens. Do you wash your vegetables in hydrogen peroxide before you eat them so that you won’t be absorbing the pesticides on the skins of the vegetables? The food colouring, the preservatives, the drugs, as all these things come into your body, your body’s white blood cells are used up constantly trying to defend you against this invasion of toxins.

And now they are trying to radiate the food, which is the worst thing you could possibly do to our society. The reason the radiation can make the food sit on the shelf and look pretty for weeks upon weeks, and it doesn’t turn rotten, is because the radiation kills all the enzymes. You won’t be able to digest it because you don’t have any enzymes to digest it and the auto-intoxication from the undigested proteins floating around in your blood stream, is what viruses latch right onto, leading to this rising incidence of AIDS, herpes, hepatitis and everything else. If they start irradiating the food, within a generation we are going to be in big trouble. The water is also toxic. If you live in a city, it is full of chlorine and fluorine, chemicals which are unnatural to the human body. All the organic compounds, the trihalomethanes, all that stuff in the water, all are carcinogens and have to be filtered out by the body. They are unnatural substances. The body has no enzymes to digest them, so what happens is that your liver, kidneys, your lymph system, your organs of elimination, your colon, start to become clogged up.

INVASION OF MICROORGANISMS

Then what happens? The invasion into the body of bacterial viruses, fungi, pathogens, microbes, microplasms, microtoxins, all this stuff, all the little bugs and viruses come into the body and live on the garbage. They are able to do that because they are anaerobic: they can’t live in oxygen. There is not enough oxygen in your body and this is the only way that these things can infect you and infest you, create colonies of themselves to the point where you come down with a disease, HIV, Epstein Barr, herpes, hepatitis, the common cold, flu, strep throat, bacterial infections, colitis, all the microbes that come into the body and they are eating you because you look like lunch because you look like garbage. If your body were flooded with oxygen, and these things can’t live in oxygen, what would happen when they try to invade your body? They can’t, because there is so much oxygen they can’t live there. So it is a struggle of survival. It is you against them. If you do nothing they win. If you keep the oxygen level up in your body, the bacteria can’t come in. I have seen patients reabsorbing tumours, and completely healed AIDS patients and cancer patients. Oxygen therapies don’t heal you. They simply give you back what you are missing and your body heals itself. You won’t get the common cold, you won’t get the flu. They are anaerobic and can’t live in oxygen.

CANCER

When toxicity reaches the cell, the cells do one of two things. They either mutate into cancer, or they stop working. As everybody gets older, they stop digesting their food because of the toxicity which you have been breathing, eating and drinking your entire life to the point where the organs that are supposed to be creating the enzymes for digestion have become so filled with pollution and toxicity that they slow down their function and eventually quit. Dr. Otto Warburg who won two Nobel Prizes said the cause of cancer is when any cell is denied 60% of its oxygen requirements. To continue living, it mutates into 31 steps lower on the evolutionary scale, from a higher order human, high functioning cell to a low order plant type cell that has no higher functions and just grows and grows and grows. In other words, the cell switches from an oxidative respiration mechanism to a fermentative respiration mechanism. The cell stops breathing oxygen because there isn’t any, and it starts fermenting the body sugar, glucose, to keep itself alive, because there is lots of that. That is the cause of cancer. Lets postulate the cure for cancer: perhaps removing the cause. If the cause is low oxygen in the body, if you were to flood the body with oxygen long enough you may cure it. I have many people calling me saying, “Mr. McCabe, I’m so glad I read your book. I went out and got some oxygen therapy and my stomach cancer is gone, my lymphoma is gone, my leukemia is gone”, and on and on.

OXYGEN THERAPIES

You are supposed to be getting oxygen in your food, air and water. The oxygen comes from the new growth in the forest, from the plankton in the ocean; it rises up into the air six miles above the earth, turns into ozone, that ozone layer created by nature, falls to earth to clean it up, clean up the air, get into the roots of plants, but it is not there. It has all been used up in the pollution along the way, in the transportation. So it is up to you to put it back. And that is what oxygen therapies are all about. I am convinced after 25 years of investigating all sorts of alternative health and healing methods, the one important thing is oxygen. The lack of it in your body is the root cause of your diseases. If we were to replace that oxygen, mineralize your body and give you enzymes, you would be amazed at how much happier you are, how much more energy you have, how fewer diseases you will get if any at all and how much longer you live. I know people who are flooding their bodies with oxygen and do not get sick. It’s not just for AIDS and cancer, but for the flu, or the common cold as well. I have seen almost every disease you can think of made better by oxygen therapies. Get enough oxygen, then herbs and all the other therapies have their place.

The milder forms of oxygen therapy are available in Toronto through the Wolfe Clinic (now in Nova Scotia -Ed.), and other clinics. You can get direct IV forms of ozone in Mexico, but this is not available at present in Canada. The vast majority of people using oxygen therapies don’t go to a clinic. They may go there to learn about the therapy and ask questions but the majority of people that I interviewed are treating themselves; they are using this on a daily basis and they are not in clinics. I have had hundreds of people call me and tell me they have gotten rid of cancer and every other disease using ozone, hydrogen peroxide, stabilized oxygen or homozone, along with a course of bowel cleansing, colloidal minerals, enzymes, that sort of thing. The people who have success with serious diseases use multiple oxygen therapies, all day long, day after day, month after month.

POLITICS

But, none of this is taught in your medical schools. One of the heads of the FDA Enforcement Surveillance Division for Drug Enforcement said the medical schools teach not what the patient needs, but what the pharmaceutical companies want taught. Why? Because they want to sell more drugs. It’s the largest business on the planet, $55 billion dollars a year. The political situation is so bad in the United States that this company Medazone (Medazone Canada Ltd. is the Canadian company) were trying to get a clinical trial using ozone therapy to decontaminate human blood and also to give ozone directly to AIDS patients. But the FDA is opposed to ozone therapy and are removing ozone machines and trying to revoke the medical license of practitioners using it.

Chief medical officer Paddy Phillips says the risk of the patients getting hepatitis C is extremely low.

“There’s one estimate that was published in the Medical Journal of Australia that reported roughly one in 2,000 to one in 16,000 risk and it depends on the particular type of patient contact,” he said.

This is my way of channeling my negative energy and turning it into something positive. Ladies, this post is mostly for you, but all you boys out there can read this and hopefully get the inspiration to really take what I’m saying seriously and to protect yourselves as well. I hope that this at least affects one person reading this, because being smart about your health and actively guarding yourself against infections is something you’ll thank yourself for later on.

Most of us have made some poor decisions in regards to our sexual health, whether that means the partners we engage with or the activities themselves that we engage in. Until now I’ve always listened to people who preach about abstinence and thought they were living on an unrealistic plane, but if you know what I know about the dangers associated with being “free spirited”, abstinence really seems to look like the better choice. It’s not about religion or about having your nose in the air; it’s about protecting yourself. Abstinence is the best thing you can do to ensure your safety.

Unfortunately, we live in a world where we risk our well-being by having casual affairs, by virtue of the fact that sex now comes with a serious price. Today’s generations obviously exchange body fluids more frequently, so naturally infections are more rampant. Most people I talk to don’t seem to understand the very real consequences of it, and we live in 2009. This information is out there, so how come nobody knows about it? Because nobody cares unless they have a scare. I’ve got skeletons in my closet; we all do. We’ve had the courses that taught us all about STIs and we’ve seen the herpes commercials, and (hopefully) all of we sexually active folk have paid a visit a time or two (hopefully every year) to the clinic to get tested. But I’m not so sure that any of my friends really get that STIs are extremely common and some are so easily contracted that you might have one (or more) and not even realize it. I remember when I had sex-ed. I was in the sixth grade and what did I take from that class? The memory of myself and my classmates laughing hysterically when the instructor pulled out “What is a blow job?” from her hat full of anonymous questions. Do you think I gained any serious information about STIs when I was 12 and still years away from having to face these issues? No. I didn’t even know where my vagina was, let alone how you contract diseases through it. I don’t even remember HPV being discussed back then, because I hadn’t even heard of it until two years ago. Then I come to find that a big chunk of my female friends have contracted it – some having been infected with more serious forms of it that put them through invasive procedures like LEEP therapy, cone biopsies and ablations. As an added plus, they get to live with the fear of cervical cancer for the rest of their lives, having it in the forefront of their minds every time they have to go for a pap test, hoping and praying that they don’t get another abnormal result informing them that they have cervical cell changes, including pre-cancerous or cancerous cells.  After undergoing therapy for it, some might be informed they might never be able to bear children. That happened to one friend of mine. She was 22 at the time when she went for her routine pap and discovered she had an abnormal reading. Consequence? Being told that her cervix might need to be reconstructed if she ever wants to conceive, as a result of it being burned and scraped thanks to HPV.

HPV is serious. It’s responsible for the majority of cervical cancers, as well as some throat and neck cancers, and you don’t even have to have sex to get it. Women as young as me have died from this. Sometimes paps won’t catch it, which means you can progress to late stage cancer without any abnormalities ever being detected. All it takes is skin-to-skin contact, and the next thing you know you could be laying on a gurney having your cervix carved or being given a premature hysterectomy. I know it’s graphic, and I haven’t even walked down that plank yet. I’ve been lucky that my paps haven’t been abnormal, but I have years ahead of me (fingers crossed) to worry about that. Women unfortunately draw the HPV card more often than men. We’re more affected by it than they are, even though they run a rare risk of developing penile or anal cancer from it. Typically, they carry it, pass it to us, and we suffer from it. There are 15 strains of it that are cancer-causing, and at least two that can cause warts, plus over 100 more. Because HPV is a virus, that means there’s no cure for it. If you get it, you have it for life… unless your body fights it off. Most people’s immune systems combat it within 8-12 months, sometimes within two years. Others aren’t so lucky and might have to face outbreaks or abnormal paps that haunt them for years to come. It’s estimated that by the age of 50, 80% of the sexually active population will have contracted some sexual strain of it. So it’s out there, and if you have sex, odds are you’ll get this at some point. Whether or not you know about it is another story.

There is currently one vaccine on the market against HPV called Gardasil, but it only prevents against the two strains that most frequently cause warts, and the two most common cancer-causing strains. Look it up on the internet – there are countless articles detailing the rough side effects of the vaccine, and a couple of deaths. All these complications for four strains out of over 120 – granted, it’s four strains that could save your life. It’s only available right now to women between the ages of 9 and 26, and men will have access to it soon… I’ve heard there’s another vaccine coming out. Where were these when I was a pre-teen? I look around at all the women I know who are afflicted by this and my heart breaks for those who have already been through hell.

Speaking of diseases that are transmitted through skin, that brings me to herpes. Herpes is a dreaded, terrible virus that is permanent, just like HPV… except your body WILL NOT clear it. Typically the outbreaks become less and less frequent over the years, but they’re painful, unsightly and come with a stigma attached. Think you’re safe from it just because your partner tells you they don’t have it? Think again. Medical experts guess that 1 in every 4 or 5 people have one of the two strains of it – herpes simplex I (the cause of cold sores), or herpes simplex II (genital infections), and most won’t even know. The two strains don’t discriminate where they become exchanged, either – meaning, if someone has a cold sore (or has the simplex that causes them), you can get that infection on your genitals, and vice versa. That’s one of those things where, just because you don’t see a cold sore, it doesn’t mean the virus isn’t shedding and that you won’t get it. Also, there is no vaccine against herpes.

I watched an interesting series on YouTube the other night by a woman by the name of Pam Stenzel, who talked about these STIs in depth. She talked about bacterial infections like gonorrhea and chlamydia, which don’t seem like a very big deal, right? You take some antibiotics, it clears up and then you can continue on like nothing happened. But what I didn’t know was that every time you catch one of these, your chances of becoming infertile increases by 25%, and women especially can end up with scar tissue inside their reproductive organs, making it more and more difficult to conceive.

Then you get into more serious diseases, like the three Hepatitis infections (A, B and C) and the most feared – HIV. Most people who become infected with hepatitis will clear the virus from their systems. Thankfully there are vaccines for both Hep A and Hep B, but there are none for Hep C. Although there’s a good chance your body can clear the virus, there’s also a risk that it’ll progress to chronic infection of the liver and lead to sirrhosis or liver cancer, and ultimately liver failure. These risks fluctuate depending on how stable your immune system is, and if you have other STIs or health problems. And HIV… well we all know about that. It generated one of the biggest scare campaigns of the century, and rightfully so. Even though antiretroviral drugs can allow people infected with it to live long, healthy lives, it’s a lot of drugs to take and it’s not fun to live with. I know this, because one of my childhood best friends died of AIDS five years ago. She didn’t get it from a wreckelss lifestyle; she acquired it from a tainted blood transfusion when she was two years old. I saw what that girl went through when her family went public about her illness, and I saw what living with it did to her life. I hadn’t seen her since I was 10 years old, but I was reading all the articles in the paper at the time (I still have them) about how her life had become since she “came out” (so to speak). My mother had no reservations about letting me hang out with her. She drove me to see her after we moved away and I spent an entire day with her, and it was like nothing had changed. We both moved away and lost touch, but I loved her, and I was crushed when my 9-year search for her came crashing down when I pulled up her obituary online. I’m in contact with someone now who knew her in her final years who told me she got into drugs before she passed away. My heart breaks for her every time she comes to mind.

Hepatitis is mostly transmitted through blood, and HIV can be transmitted easily through body fluids/unprotected sex. Be wary if you meet someone who confesses to a former drug addiction. How do you know if that does or doesn’t include intravenous? A person’s word is worth as far as you can throw them… at least when your body is concerned. The only way I’m ever jumping into bed with another man is if he shows me he’s serious about me and is willing to get tested with me. I might be a little late, but I’m promising myself that I will be safer in the future.

None of this makes me think that casual sex is worth the risk anymore, and nor does it make me think the experienced guys are sexy – far from it. The more women they’ve been with, the dirtier (and more likely to be carrying some disease) they are. The old saying holds that you sleep with every person your partner has slept with, because whatever they were exposed to in prior relationships is what you are exposed to. It’s a nightmare if you think of every person they’ve been with, multiplied by the AVERAGE number of partners each of those people has had. And that still doesn’t come close to the real danger. As for you guys out there, “easy women” come at a pretty high price too, don’t they? It’s too scary to sit on a bed of nails waiting for time to pass and results to come in. The waiting period is the hardest part, especially when you have to wait three months from the most recent exposure before you can get an accurate HIV result, and some peace of mind. Do yourself and your blood pressure a huge favour, and just don’t put yourself in that situation at all.

I know how great sex is and how hard it is to pass up – I’ve been there. I love it as much as anyone else. But I am making a personal self pledge for abstinence, at least until I meet someone I love and who I plan to be in a long-term relationship with. Any sex is risky, but at least take the risk with the right person. Don’t just give it up. Imagine how much better it will be when your mind is cleared of all the worries of what you COULD be contracting in the heat of the moment.
