Social interaction and coping with stress is difficult for him because of his syndrome, which is a form of autism. His frantic parents and police searched for days until he was spotted by a transit cop. JOSE MA. HERNANDEZ

(1904-1982)

Dramatist, Author and Educator

A distinguished man of letters, Jose Ma. Hernandez was born on June 19, 1904.  Hegraduated valedictorian from the Mabini Intermediate School and received the degree of Bachelor of Science in education from the University of the Philippines in 1928.  After graduation, he enrolled at Columbia University for the summer term of 1929.  He earned his master’s degree in English, cum laude, from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.  His thesis was, “The Philosophy of Joseph Conrad.”

While still a student in UP, Hernandez taught at the Zaragoza Elementary School inManila.  This was until 1925, when he was transferred to Santa Ana Elementary School.  In 1928, he taught at the Welfareville High School, and was appointed instructor in English at the University of Santo Tomas and in education, with assignments in high school, at the UP.

However, he later gave up such appointments because of poor health.  From being professor in English at UST in 1931, he rose to become dean of its English department in 1933.  In 1935, he began teaching English at San Beda College and, in 1937 at St. Theresa’s College and San Juan de Letran as well.

The holiday season is in full swing at West Palm Beach. From the snow falls at City Place to the peppermint mochas at Starbucks, Christmas is here.

Before any chestnut roasts under an open fire and after the turkeys have been eaten, the stores all over West Palm Beach will be flooded with shoppers of all ages on Black Friday looking for the best deals for Christmas.

For the college student, the black in Black Friday can mean death because of college expenses and lack of transportation. For those stuck on campus this Black Friday, there are affordable options just around the corner.

One of the scariest gifts to buy someone is clothing. My first tip when it comes to shopping under budget is to go designer. I know going designer sounds expensive, but I am not talking about Chanel and Gucci.

Collections from well known designers are hitting department stores. For Mom, you may find some elegant options within Macy’s Michael Kors collection. The collection is made up of solid colors, metallics, day wear, evening wear, shoes and jackets. Though the prices of some of these pieces are $150, these clothes are a steal at these prices.

Macy’s will be cutting down the prices on these expensive items during their Black Friday Sale, so this is the time to go designer. If you feel your wallet is pinching you at the idea of buying a $150 dress, Target’s Converse collection may be right up your alley.

Aimed toward the early twenties to early thirties brother and sister, the Converse collection at Target offers a variety of pieces that lean toward the trendy look; there is a lot of color, fun shapes and plaid as well as a variety of accessories from fedoras to scarves.

Although not tied to a designer’s name, the collection is very well constructed and, for a price range of $30 to $40, you can have your brother or sister anticipating the next time they receive clothing for Christmas.

Being the coffee nut in my family, I love the taste of Starbucks in the morning, afternoon, in between classes and at night for those long studying sessions. Since PBA is a few blocks away from a Starbucks, a gift from there is a convenient option.

A gift card doesn’t say, “I didn’t know what to get you,” as much as it says, “I know exactly where you like to shop and will let you find what you love.” With a lot of emphasis placed on Black Friday, there is a lot taken away from the after-Christmas sale.

During this time, many places are overstocked with items and need them to disappear. With low prices due to this sale, a $15 gift card can go a long way. It is good for five tall white mochas, a CD or a few bags of coffee that can last months after purchasing.

A great way to save money on Black Friday is to purchase items that are on clearance. Items on clearance already are marked down and are eligible for the 20 percent off sales, making these items extremely affordable.

Another great inexpensive gift option is music. CD’s range from $8 to $80 box sets. With Target and Wal-Mart near campus, you can get your Britney Spears’ obsessed sister the new singles collection; the rapper in the family Jay Z’s “The Blueprint III” or Lecrae’s latest; and for the friend in love with Switchfoot, their new “Hello Hurricane” record.

A great place for music, if you don’t feel like traveling to Target or lack a car, is Barnes and Noble in City Place. While there, you can get the reader in the family the latest from Francis Chan, Stephanie Meyer or Dan Brown.

Barnes and Noble also sells classic books such as “Persuasion” by Jane Austen and “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelly. Music and literature open up a new tip for low budget Christmas shopping: buy low and create a memory.

For best friends and close family, a mix CD full of songs that remind you of “that one time” or a cheap gag book that takes you back to “that one day” will tell a person you thought about them this Christmas.

Who am I when I look into a mirror? This question has been haunting me lately. Over the fall break, I had the opportunity to attend a National Christian Multicultural Student Leaders Conference conference at Houghton College in Buffalo, New York.

What is “white privilege?”
I attended seminars on facilitating diversity in my college and worshipped in various languages. All in all, the experience was transforming.

The conference made me aware of issues that affect students from diverse backgrounds, and it made me aware of the issues I face as a person of color on Palm Beach Atlantic University’s campus.

The question of identity, when faced with a mirror, was brought up in a class discussing the existence of “white privilege” in America. I took the class because I was interested in knowing what people had to say about a topic that I felt was dead. When I think of white privilege, the first thing that pops into my head is the “Whites Only” signs of the 1950s and ‘60s.

Frankly, I don’t see those signs around anymore so why is discussion on white privilege relevant?

The definition of white privilege supplied by the facilitators of the discussion came from an article written by Peggy McIntosh entitled “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack.”

White privilege involves the advantages present for white people in a system or society. I understand the definition; nevertheless, aren’t we living in a society where everyone has an equal opportunity?

For some people in the group, the answer to that question was no. Even though I found it extremely hard to empathize with the girl who talked about the slavery of her people hundreds of years ago, I found the story of the African American girl who couldn’t find quality hair products that fit her hair type intriguing.

There was also the story of the girl from Thailand who came to an American private school just to become aware that she was different; she was the “Asian” girl.

Seen as a color instead of a person
When these students spoke, I felt myself slowly becoming aware of the subtle yet impactful form white privilege has in their lives, yet I couldn’t help but feel disconnected from the issue still.

I have “white” hair and was the only Latino in my graduating class yet never felt like “the Hispanic.”

A black man from Seattle Pacific University stood up and told the class that when he woke up in the morning and looked in the mirror, he was black.

He continued to say that he wanted to look in the mirror and classify himself as a poet, musician, dancer or friend, but he couldn’t.

He felt like he was the black poet, the black musician, the black dancer and the black friend. This man’s illustration brought a mirror to my face.

Looking into it, I realized the impact white privilege had on me. I don’t see myself as the Latino journalist, Latino friend or Latino student when I look into my mirror.

Instead, the mirror had a different effect on me. I saw myself as the white journalist, white friend and white student.

Personal white privilege impact
Growing up partially disconnected from my culture (never having to speak Spanish and eating predominately American food), being Hispanic has never come naturally to me.

Sure I could check the Hispanic box on the SAT and college applications, but I saw that as something I was and never something I felt.

I would say my feelings of feeling white arose because I was never put into a situation to think about my race.

For the various people around me who grew up in Mexican homes where the father drove his children to work rather than to college, who have been labeled the “black” friend, and who have watched their race negatively portrayed by the media, having never to think about race is not an option.

After getting over the initial shock of what I found in my mirror, the idea kept haunting me until a fresh idea about identity was brought up in another seminar, “Can’t I just find my identity in Jesus?”

At first glance, Wendy Martinez may look like just an average college student, but this former police officer has seen in real life what her classmates only see in gory cop shows.

Her first call as a police officer came in as a reported suicide. As Martinez interviewed witnesses, she realized she had stumbled onto a domestic dispute turned deadly. When the victim’s boyfriend found out she was cheating, he stabbed her in the face 36 times.

“It was just the whole rush of the crime scene: people writing down the accounts and taping off the area,” Martinez said.

Now she’s put that rush somewhat behind her, becoming just a reserve police officer and studying pre-law. She hopes to become a criminal defense attorney, and she heads toward that goal with a perspective born out of personal trauma.

“I grew up with the cops around all the time because of my parents,” said Martinez, whose father was abusive. “It’s hard to see the kids in domestic disturbance calls because I knew what they were going through. I can see it in their eyes.”

Having allowed time to heal the wounds of the past, Martinez has since forgiven her father and has so much love for him. However,
“I saw my mom with no power. She was belittled by my father,” Martinez said. “During these situations of domestic disturbance, I show the women that you can be strong and put your foot down and say, ‘I am not going to take this from you. I am not going to tolerate this abuse.’

“My biggest issue was domestic disturbance because I had to put my emotions aside,” she said.

Martinez feels that during these situations it is essential to put the title of cop behind and be a confidant, a friend to the abused.

“I like to not be like I came, I called, and I left. I want to leave an impact,” she said.

Martinez misses the rush of being a police officer, but school is her main priority now. She wakes up every morning, goes to class and then works at an internship in a law office from 2 to 5 p.m.

When work ends, she goes back home to catch her favorite show on A&E, “The First 48,” a show documenting real-life crime scene investigations. At any time, she may be called to enforce the law as a reserve officer.

A full time cop, according to Martinez, works eight to 12 hour shifts, has 24-hour access to a SWAP car, carries a gun and is called in for traffic related instances, domestic disturbances, fender benders and homicides. She has weathered the adrenaline-driving scenes and also the mundane.

“Fender bender reports are super long,” she said. I felt like I was writing a paper for school.” Now she’s in school for real.

“I wanted to go to school and be a cop,” Martinez said. “With the economy I knew I needed to get a degree. They are laying people off all over the place.”

Along the way, Martinez has already showed perseverance as a female in a male dominated profession. One of four women during her days in the police academy, she recalls the varied attitude toward women.

“They treat you like you are different,” she said.

“They would say, ‘If you want to do girl push-ups, that’s okay,’ or give us a shorter distance to run, but all of us would just do just as much as the guys. We were all so strong willed,” Martinez said. “It’s always like they are the strongest. It makes us women work twice as hard or three times as hard just to prove ourselves.”

Martinez said the toughness taught at the academy has definitely spilled over into the love portion of her life.

“I’m really funny and easy to get along with, but my job required me to be tough,” she said. “It has shaped me and is part of who I am.”
Martinez feels this is the reason that long-term relationships have never worked out.

“It’s not that I am not laid back,” she said. “It’s just I am very demanding.”

“When I have children,” Martinez said, “I want to show them that there is no specific gender for any specific career. It’s beneficial to dirty your nails as long as you are happy doing it.”

(Note: The lack of recent posts has to do with missing several episodes of WWE programming. In this case missing is strictly in the physical sense, as in I didn’t watch them, not that I felt bad for not watching.)

TNA currently is in a weird spot. The company claims to be making its big move, it’s ’swing for the fences’, as president Dixie Carter eloquently put it last week. However, it can’t really make that move until this guy shows up on TV:

Until then, which, hopefully, is right after Sunday’s pay-per-view, TNA is just buying time. The big picture is staying in neutral, if you will. However, there were some little things that, needless to say, entertained and refreshed fans on the most recent Impact.

• Beautiful People, ugly stick: Madison and Velvet have claimed to be cleansing the world, one ugly person at a time. With their newest member, the lovely Lacey Von Erich, comes a new prop. Lacey literally carries around an Ugly Stick. OK, so it’s a bubble-gum pink nightstick. It still kicks ass.
• Old dogs, no tricks: As if adding 56-year-old Hogan wasn’t enough, TNA debuted two ‘new’ competitors this week — Raven (45) and Jim ‘The Anvil’ Neidhart (53). Raven rejoined the promotion via a lights-out run-in that included changing the outcome of the Abyss/Stevie Richards match and shooting a fireball into Mick Foley’s face. Well done. The Anvil made what supposedly was his TNA debut during the Black Machismo Invitational, in which Jay Lethal (a hilarious Macho Man knockoff) vows to face/defeat a legend each week. Neidhart, who looks like he ate the rest of the Hart Foundation, somehow went over. So much for that.
• Double turn, triple personnel: Team 3D started a heel turn last week, when Brother/Bubba/Buh Buh Ray used a chair in their match against Matt Morgan and Hernandez. They completed the turn in a promo that showed them buying into Rhino’s conspiracy theory (basically the young guys are trying to take out the old guys…a solid plan if you ask me) and going a bit racist on Hernandez. In the same promo, it is brought to the attention of the faces that they need a third man for their 6-man street fight at the PPV. Out comes D’Angelo Dinero, who makes a face turn to join ‘the future’ against ‘the past.’ Not often you see three guys turn at once, probably because it’s confusing, but I liked it.
• X Division, simply Amazing: I now am convinced there currently are three things that keep me watching wrestling — Randy Orton as the best heel I’ve ever seen, Kurt Angle as a face, and Amazing Red as…well…Amazing Red. He’s young (27), risky, innovative and energetic…a classic luchador. Think Rey Mysterio in WCW, without the mask (or hip-hop makeover, depending on the era) and before he was doomed to a life of David vs. Goliath matches. If you’re a wrestling fan, you will *love* this guy.

A sad tale may be the best for winter, but does such a tale befit the fall?

Every three years, Palm Beach Atlantic University’s theater department chooses a Shakespearean play to produce. This year, that play is “The Winter’s Tale,” which is partially set in the imaginary countries of Sicilia and Bohemia.

According to Bruce Coville, author of the retelling of the play, “There is a disease that can twist men’s hearts and make them mad, and the name of that disease is jealousy.”

The “disease” manifests itself in the character of King Leontes, whose jealous actions set the stage for the various plot points of the play.

Drawing inspiration from Coville’s book, PBA’s version centers around a grandfather telling the story of “The Winter’s Tale” to his grandson. The story is then played out for the audience with the grandfather and grandson taking on roles in the tale.

“The Winter’s Tale” becomes a game of imagination that invites the audience into the world of Shakespeare in an original way that maintains the play’s literary integrity.

“Some people might say it is a bit of a mix of the light and the dark, but I think that’s the thing that makes it fascinating,” Director Robert Homer-Drummond said. “It covers the heights and depths of human experience.”

To sophomore Pierre Tannous who plays Leontes, the blend of tragedy and comedy makes the play more realistic and relatable since tragedy and comedy are usually such polarities with no middle ground.

“The Winter’s Tale” illustrates the intermingling of both.

The importance of performing “The Winter’s Tale” for the actors in the production is essential to learn their craft.

According to Homer-Drummond, it is imperative for students to be exposed not only to the literature of Shakespeare, but also to have the opportunity to perform Shakespeare at some point during their four years in the Theatre Department.

“Many people have said Shakespeare is the Olympics for actors, not easy stuff to do,” Homer-Drummond said.
Junior Bridget Williams said that playing the character Paulina is like riding a rollercoaster of moods. The role forced her to realize her own weaknesses, Williams said.

For senior Christy Lawler, who plays Hermoine, taking on Shakespeare is different from anything she has done. She believes that the language of Shakespeare is its driving force because it carries the emotion of the piece; the language carries the character.

“I’ve gained a greater sense of peace and trust,” Lawler said. “I have gained a calmness, inner steadiness and peace.”
Stepping up to the “Shakespearean Olympics” is just one challenge facing the cast, for there is the added stress of the Kravis Center.

For the first time, the Kravis Center’s Rinker Playhouse will host a PBA production. For the director, the excitement stems from having a great stage on which to play. The actors feel a sense of honor and accomplishment.

“I am humbled and privileged,” Lawler said. “So many actors have used that space to create.”

For senior Kyle Schnack being able to play Polixenes at the Kravis is a sweet feeling.

“It looks good on resumes,” he said. “It’s also nice to be in a space that feels like a theater.”

Above the imagination and wonder of the Kravis center, Homer-Drummond wants the audience to leave the production having experienced Shakespeare for more than its face value.

“‘The Winter’s Tale’ is a redemptive story but it is not easy redemption. It is not cheap grace,” he said. “We see that the possibility for healing and for forgiveness exists but that somebody usually pays the price for that forgiveness.”

Homer-Drummond added that Shakespeare’s language and characterization have the power to get this message across, taking his “audience on a journey that, like the works of the great Greek playwrights, is cathartic.”

A couple days ago, I relayed a message — Hulk Hogan is returning to professional wrestling via TNA — and I was none too happy about it. He’s a mid-50s man with mid-80s knees, hips and back…carrying as much weight (a legit 300-plus  pounds on a 6-foot-4 frame) and doing steroids for as long as he did will do that to a brother. *inserts Hogan impression* He was damn near immobile during the last match many would have seen, his win over Randy Orton at SummerSlam 2006. He can’t get it done in the ring, and he doesn’t really do business.

Still, the son of a bitch sucked me in on Thursday night’s Impact, which ended with taped footage of his initial press conference Tuesday at Madison Square Garden. A bold move, to say the least, since MSG is the Mecca of a certain wrestling promotion he helped launch to the stratosphere in the 1980s and has a No. 3 show with ratings comparable to the show he will soon join.

He looks like he always has, which means he’s an outstanding physical specimen for 36, let alone 56…the pythons are still in full effect. He sounds the same. Most importantly, he still has that undeniable charisma that, despite the inevitable letdown in the ring, still gives fans that glimmer of hope. That belief that, just like he did when we were young(er), he can take on whatever comes and get the job done.

No matter what, if only for a few moments, he makes you a Hulkamaniac all over again.

Obviously the Hogan signing was the big focus, which was good since Impact (which was taped last week) was a bit dull and needed something to prop it up.

Speaking of the show: Kurt Angle’s face turn is complete thanks to the utter despicability (is that a word?) of one Desmond Wolfe. However, Wolfe clotheslined the shit out of Angle and ‘injured’ him. He took the full force of the throw with the back of his head, which is Bubba’s fuck-up. Good to know Sabin’s OK, but his dome still can’t feel too well.  Awesome Kong spent her week just coming to the ring and beating the shit out of people. Well, the second time she wasn’t too successful (thanks to Tara), but it was still pretty sweet. I wish someone in WWE would do that. Imagine Orton just snapping and making a couple sneaky run-ins, chair swinging. … The TNA championship storyline involves A.J. Styles just chillin’ in the back, then getting jumped every week. It seems like you would use your best storylines on the strap, but clearly Vince Russo is seeing things differently (of course). … Get Rhino off the air. Hell, put Hogan in his place. This is already more ink than Rhino deserves. … Give Hernandez a belt! … Speaking of belts, Eric Young has supposedly retired the TNA Legends title and called it the TNA Global championship. He won’t defend it on American soil or against American wrestlers because we don’t deserve it. I like this guy. … But I like the Beautiful People more.
