Day Three: Medal of Honor Heroes 2 Developer: EA Platform: Nintendo Wii Price: ~$30 USD ESRB Rating:

Day Three: Medal of Honor Heroes 2
Developer: EA
Platform: Nintendo Wii
Price: ~$30 USD
ESRB Rating: Teen
Multiplayer: Yes, online multiplayer for up to 32 players.

First Impressions:
Nazis? Check.
Guns? Check.
If you still need more of an explanation, read on.

Being a big fan of arcade shooters and light guns myself, the Wii sounds like it should make a great platform for shooting games. The Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 provides two very different modes of play. The Arcade Mode gives a very true to form arcade experience with movement on rails so the player need only focus on aiming and shooting. The Campaign Mode allows the player freedom of movement and changes other mechanics to fit the broader scope in addition to adding a storyline.

The visuals are good for the Wii platform, though in the multiplayer the player animations seem choppy and always leaning heavily to the side even while running.

User Interface/Usability:
Reloading sometimes takes a few shakes of the Wiimote to take and turning took some getting used to. The tutorial menus for learning how to use the different weapons was unintuitive. The button used for backing out of an demonstration changed between B and -. An option like this should be consistent. Some other button options were inconsistant across the Arcade and Campaign modes. This forces the player to relearn controls while in a game, again, not an optimal interface. This probably won’t be noticable to players who pick and stick to one of the two modes.

Learning Curve:
The tutorials would have been more useful if they provided a shooting range or other more visual represeatation to illustrate the controls. A check appearing after you’ve rotated the right direction doesn’t tell the user as clearly as shooting a target or watching the weapons or items being manipulated as they would be in the game would.

The learning curve for MH:H2 makes good use of the arcade mode to ease the player into the motion sensing control scheme for the Wii and appears to basically be at first an extension of the tutorial.

Because the controls in the Arcade Mode and Campaign Mode are different, it takes a bit to relearn them for the shift. The free form movement takes some getting used to after playing Arcade Mode for awhile.

Similar to Other Games:
The Arcade Mode vividly recalls all the light gun style game machines. Besides the engaging control scheme for the Wii, the Campaign mode is fairly typical of the World War 2 shooting genre.

Keep Playing:
I’ll probably play a mission every once in awhile in Arcade Mode and eventually churn Campaign Mode for the story, but I most likely won’t be spending much time in multiplayer.

Summary:
The Arcade Mode serves up an excellent tracked shooter experience great for quick play and getting a solid grasp of the Wii’s control scheme. Campaign Mode expands on this experience and improves on the mechanics while adding a better than average WW2 storyline.
Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 is great for fans of arcade style shooters, and a decent game for the free form shooters crowd.

Wishlist:
MH:H2 would benefit from a shooting range or other more visual interface as part of the tutorial to practice things like throwing grenades, firing bazookas, and other weapons instead of just getting a check mark when the player jukes and jives the correct way.

Epilogue:
The instruction booklet gives credit to the Congressional Medal of Honor Society for their work with veterans and provides the URL for the organization’s website. It’s nice to see a company referencing the history and lives of the real people affected by what a game is based on. The gaming industry would benefit greatly from honoring the history and other inspirations for games.

We should see a lot more than a paragraph in the back of an instruction manual, but at least it’s a start.

From creator/writer Tim Kring (NBC’s “Crossing Jordan”) comes “Heroes,” an epic drama that chronicles the lives of ordinary people who discover they possess extraordinary abilities… for a destiny they have yet to find.

The second season begins four months after the events of Kirby Plaza. Peter Petrelli,
Matt Parkman, Nathan Petrelli, and Sylar have all survived the events of the season one finale, and are trying to return to ordinary lives despite their extraordinary abilities, with the exception of Sylar, who is on a quest to regain the use of his abilities. The main plot arc of “Generations” deals with the Company and its research on the Shanti virus. This research is explored through the Company’s founders, whose identities are revealed, as well as through the effects of various strains of the virus on The Haitian, Niki Sanders, Sylar, and others. An amnesiac Peter Petrelli observes the potential devastation of the virus in a future New York City. The “heroes” ultimately come together in an attempt to stop the release of a deadly strain of the virus and avert a global pandemic.

Interwoven with the main plot are several secondary plots. These include Nathan Petrelli’s recovery following the events at Kirby Plaza; the journey of new characters Maya and Alejandro from Honduras to the United States, and their interaction with a powerless Sylar; Claire and Noah Bennet and their family adapting to a new life in southern California; Claire’s relationship with her boyfriend West; Monica Dawson discovering her powers in New Orleans, with the help of her cousin Micah; Matt Parkman’s reunion with his estranged father, leading to discovery of new abilities; the Company’s manipulation of Mohinder Suresh; Ando Masahashi trying to piece together what happened to Hiro Nakamura; and Hiro’s journey to Feudal Japan, where he meets his childhood hero, Takezo Kensei.

Jogo bacana, primeira pessoa, divertido no modo Ad-Hoc.

“Heroes is an American Emmy Award-nominated science fiction drama tv show, created by Tim Kring, which premiered on NBC on September 25, 2006. The show tells the story of several people who “”thought they were like everyone else… until they realized they have incredible abilities”" such as telepathy, time travel, flight and instantaneous regeneration. These people soon realize they have a role in preventing a catastrophe and saving mankind. The series emulates the writing style of American comic books with short, multi-episode story arcs that build upon a larger, more encompassing arc. Kring said “”we have talked about where the show goes up to five seasons.”"

When the series premiered in the United States, it was the night’s most-watched program among adults aged 18-49, attracting 14.3 million viewers overall and receiving the highest rating for any NBC drama premiere in five years.”
