Pushover is a all ages music festival held in Melbourne every Labour day and the line-up of the 2010 festival has just been released.

Anybody who went to Pushover this year can breathe a sigh of relief: Mcfly will not be playing the 2010 Pushover festival.

The bands who will be playing are:

50 Lions

Break Even

Built on Secrets

City Escape

Dash & Will

Heroes for Hire

Horrorshow

I Explode Like

Kisschasy

Lovers Grave

The Mission In Motion

The Sundance Kids

Urthboy

Wherewolves

Yacht Club DJs

Young Heretics

Yves Klein Blue

I can’t say I’m completley sold on the line-up, although hopefully I’ll get a chance at volunteering at the festival like I did this year. Too much hardcore and Kisschasy for my liking. Still it’ll be worth it to see Yves Klein Blue.

Anyway, let me know what you think.

So, I decided that since today is the 30th Daily Sketch (meaning I’ve been doing this for damn near a month now) I’d branch out a bit, and have 2 characters tangibly interacting. After all, almost all of the stuff I do on here is static poses, which ain’t the stuff stories are made of. So, I’m going to start kicking it up a notch – try to have two or more haracters interacting in some way more often.

I’ve started by having Iron Fist kick the snot out of a HYDRA agent because, well, it’s damn fun to draw, and I need to work on my fluidity of motion for action shots.

Annual #1 Danny Rand aka Iron Fist debuted in Marvel Premiere #15 in 1976. Back then he was Marve

Annual #1

Danny Rand aka Iron Fist debuted in Marvel Premiere #15 in 1976. Back then he was Marvel’s answer to the kung-ful craze of the 70s.

Don’t believe it? Check out that costume and that disco collar.

In the 30+ years of his existence, Iron Fist was a C level Marvel character at best. His original solo series was remarkable mainly for debuting future Wolverine baddie, Sabretooth.

Iron Fist enjoyed a lengthy run as part of “Heroes for Hire” with Luke Cage, but even that series eventually ran its course. After 1986, Iron Fist bounced around without any real direction or motivation.

Fast forward to 2006, and someone finally figured out how to really energize this character. Those people were the creative team of Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction. It has been in the pages of this duo’s “The Immortal Iron Fist” that the character has finally found a true creative voice.

I picked up the first trade paperback volume, “The Last Iron Fist Story,” late last year and was immediately hooked. Brubaker and Fraction added liberally from the staples of pulp fiction to give Iron Fist a depth heretofore unseen.

They made him part of a long line of Iron Fists (Phantom). They introduced us to the previous Iron Fist, Orson Randall, and then to his exploits with a group of wacky adventurer buddies (the Shadow, Doc Savage), one of whom turns out to be Danny Rand’s father. They gave Danny a new future as a humanitarian. They evolved his powers to make him stronger, but keep that power within the confines of the character.

There has been a martial arts tournament featuring Iron Fist and the champions of the six other heavenly cities. There have been appearances by Luke Cage and Misty Knight. There has even been a civil war in the city of K’un L’un.

It has been a first class reboot of a very average character, and one I can highly recommend to anyone. The series has been collected into three (so far) trade editions: The Last Iron Fist Story, The Seven Capital Cities of Heaven and The Book of the Iron Fist.

Start with The Last Iron Fist Story, as strange as that sounds.

You’ll be glad you did.

Matt Fraction, (Writer) David Aja, (Artist) and Matt Hollingsworth (Color) With this being the final

Matt Fraction, (Writer) David Aja, (Artist) and Matt Hollingsworth (Color)

With this being the final issue of Immortal Iron Fist before the new creative team takes over, it was surprising to find the entire story devoted to Danny Rand making some big changes to his personal life. In every respect, a new status quo is established in this issue and it sets up some interesting possibilities for Danny Rand and company. Danny is a changed man after the events of the Seven Capital Cities of Heaven tournament, so if you are interested in seeing exactly what this “new” Danny is like and what he overlooked in his study of the Iron Fist legacy, make sure to check this one out. While this is, to be honest, a pretty slow issue, it never feels like it drags thanks to the excellent writing by Matt Fraction and some strong artwork by David Aja.

Matt Fraction is considered one of the rising stars in the comic industry for good reason. With this issue of Iron Fist, he takes what could easily be a boring story of personal transformation and makes it flow with personality and heart. Fraction makes us truly understand Danny Rand’s state of mind and the choices he makes never come across as cheesy or half-hearted. With Fraction at the helm, Rand is a man with heart, vision, and the conviction necessary to live a new kind of life. Iron Fist #16 is a feel good story through and through, but never once did I wish for an action scene and that speaks volumes about how well the writer handled this issue.

It was definitely a pleasant surprise to see David Aja and Hollingsworth back together for this issue. They make quite the team and the work they do here makes the package even better; there’s a whole lot of heart behind it and the artwork reflects that. Aja does wonders with facial expressions and there is a genuine sense of friendship and admiration felt between various characters. It’s a story about a man getting his life back on track and it couldn’t work half as well as it does without the artwork complimenting and elevating an already compelling emotional tone.

Outside of a nice twist at the very end of the book, Iron Fist #16 is a low key passing of the torch between creative teams. If you’re looking for an action-packed romp, then steer clear of this one. However, if you want some fantastic writing highlighted by some great character moments and unbelievably complimentary art work, make sure you don’t pass this one up. Oh yeah… keep an eye out for a cameo by two of the best writers in the business. (Grade: A)

So, 2007 is nearing an end, and I figured I’d poll anyone who visits this site on what they

So, 2007 is nearing an end, and I figured I’d poll anyone who visits this site on what they’ll be changing in their pull list. I find this time of the year is a good time to sort that stuff out, and while I’ll tweak my pull list throughout the year, this is the time of the year in which I make larger changes.

Daredevil: dropped

I feel like nothing has been happening too much, it’s all been more of the same false leads following up on them for nothing. Daredevil has never been one of the fastest paced comics out there, but not I feel that Murdock could sneeze and that’d be enough for the editors. The annual was amazing, I was a huge fan of that, but the lead up to issue #100 was so big, and in the end that flopped. It pains me to drop this title, especially considering that he is one of my favourite characters in the Marvel universe.

The Order: dropped

Yeah, not much has been happening in The Order either, well, no, that’s a lie. Things have been happening, and they’ve been reasonably interesting, but to be honest it just feels so disconnected from everything else Marvel. I like it when stories at intertwined, and figuring out how everything fits together, like a giant puzzle, and The Order just doesn’t have any relation to anything else. Also, I find the characters to be very stereotypical and shallow, and that makes it very hard to me to like them, or become invested in their interests and well being.

Heroes for Hire: dropped

I started reading this during World War Hulk, and decided I’d give it a chance to grow on me. It hasn’t, I’m not really sure why, I like the characters, the stories aren’t bad, I’m just not enjoying reading it.

Amazing Spider-man: dropped

There has been a lot of hype about this recently. While I DO have a major issue with what they have done to Spider-man, my reasons for dropping this title are slightly more shallow than that. I don’t want to pick it up three times a month, for a couple reasons. It’ll get too expensive, that’s an extra two issues a month I’ll have to pick up to keep on top of the story, and also, I don’t trust Marvel (or any publisher) to bring out GOOD issues almost weekly. I mentioned Daredevil’s attitude of “sneeze and the comic is over,” and they have a month to bring each one out.

Cable & Deadpool: dropped

Sadly, it’s ending. So I really don’t have a choice about this, but I will be picking up Cable, and if there’s any Deadpool titles coming up, you can bet I’ll be picking them up too.

Incredible Hulk: added

For better or worse, I really like Amadeus Cho. Probably because I like math, but hey, as long as he’s continuing to be in it, I’m going to keep reading it. I even like his character most of the time. Something about the boy that can stop a train with a pebble really intrigues me

Anything Conan: added

I read a single issue of Conan, and let me tell you, I loved it. Everything about it. I’m working on a review of it which will be posted in a day or two once I’ve had a chance to proof read it (I put a significant amount of effort into these reviews)

That’s it for me, how about you guys, what will you be picking up, and what issues are getting left on the shelves? Not a WordPress subscriber? It’s cool, I allow unsubscribed comments.

The Prequel to the Heroes for Hire series, Daughters Of the Dragon shows you how Misty and Colleen put together their team, and how the offices of Heroes For hire is Formed. The six-book series is action-packed, dramatic and as hilarious as the Sequel as Misty and Colleen take us on a gut-flipping adventure of crashing cars, blazing guns, charging Rhinos, and a lot of slicey-dicey sword-action. The series also has appearances by other Marvel heroes like Iron Fist and The Punisher.
