well, we’re here. it took us 5.75hours. we stopped 3 times because i insisted on recreating some of the highlights of celine’s performance. specifically, the one-legged air guitar ending in a lifted point-flex, point-flex. the calabasas 76 station got the left to right peace sign across my eyes, as i bobbed my head off beat, front teeth to chin. when i had to pee, and didn’t want to use the public restrooms i’d just borrow celine’s quick, little, grapevine steps around the car; totally solved the problem. the only time things got awkward was when i held her tyrannosaurus rex (1:17) move? HH and the beasts started barking at me to stop, locked me out of the car, and refused to let me in until i promised to cease my homage to miss dion.

i complied. but i must say, the ride was definitely not as fun. hmph. gobble gobble.

the car is packed. the playlists are complete. this evening, after my last class, the beasts, hh and i will depart for a 7 hour road trip.

tonight begins my favorite week of the year. pebble beach.

my entire family under one roof for 6 days. thursday we’ll feast at the lodge. i think i’ve had halibut the last 5 years. no mom’s stuffing, no aunt charla’s pumpkin pie, no dad carving the turkey. and thank god, no marshmallows amidst yams???!??! (seriously, are you kidding me with that?) this thanksgiving tradition is the only i know, and i crave it all year.

13 of us in one house.  a lot of ativan prescriptions.

divorce. reconciliation. secrets. court. businesses. loans. illnesses. death. this is family. this is my family. this is my beautiful, perfect family. for all the painful tears shed, there have been more tears cried out in hysterics playing cutthroat matches of michigan rummy, or spilt over mugs of coffee during marathon morning fireside funnies. pretty much all my brother has to do is look at me a certain way, and any beverage i’m drinking squirts out my nose in convulsive laughter.

don’t get me wrong. i’m sure we will always tote along our buckets of bitterness and “our” versions of the past, but it doesn’t change the fact that i bloody love these people to death. and, for this one week when we are together, i have a smile in my stomach, and my face, and i twirl from my eyes to my toes.

Seriously, I heard my school was cliquey but figured, please!  I am way too old for that to bother me!  Uh, no!  Long story short – I chose wrong the first week of school and can you believe it is TOO LATE for me to hook up with any group or to have any substantial friendships now???  WTF?

I mean don’t get me wrong – people are extremely nice to me and there are A LOT of nice people.  Problem is, they are all connected and like in high school, don’t seem too keen on adding to their group.  It could just be me they don’t want, but I am more thinking they are just comfy in their groups and that’s that!

I was with this group of girls – not at all sure how I connected with them, but we had a lot of fun!  I was much older than them, but it was fine.  Then, things happened and it just didn’t work out.  Now, I feel a bit alone in a section of 120 people.  Like I said, don’t feel sorry for me – I’m fine and having a great time, but I do wish I could have those close friendships I see people developing.  I miss getting the invites to the parties.

It’s also like high school because you can hear people talking shit about other people alot!  That drives me CRAZY!  I hated that in high school – it does nothing but make people feel self-conscious! 

Also, there are the pretty girls and hot guys everyone wants/hates/envies!  As I’ve said before, I’m thankful I don’t have to get caught up in that whole game/competition but it is fascinating to watch!  There was a discussion one night about how many hot girls there are in my section (this was a group of girls talking) and they were pissed.  Then 2 girls who I adore said “Yea, I thought I’D be the hottest girl in the class!”  And I think they were serious!!  WOW, the confidence!!!  They are lovely, adorable girls, but as much as I love them, they are right – there are hotter girls (which is QUITE annoying!!!   

The guy situation is interesting!  Most of the girls in the section think there are slim pickings.  Either the guy is hot but not too bright or hot and way too reserved.  Most girls think the guys are just so-so! 

I wish I could shake them!!!  When I was 20-something, I too chased the hottie, bad-boy and where did it get me???  PLEASE!  What I finally (thanfully) became attracted to was the decent looking guy who was the smartest in the room!  NOT the guy who KNEW he was the smartest (cause he ususally was just an ass who was way too cocky for my tastes!) but the guy who really was the smartest!!  Around 25 yrs old I began noticing this gooey feeling I’d get for older men who were the men people called when they needed to get something done.  I even married one of those guys.  Cute, sure, but what made them more attractive was their intelligence!  Now, when taken in those terms, there are a TON of guys in our section that are total hotties!!  I could name 20 off the top of my head! 

Problem for me is two-fold:  still married and too old!!    (Not old enough to be their mom, but their mom’s younger sister, perhaps!!!) 

It doesn’t hurt to look!  And, since I have been back in school these last 4 years, I have found classes are much more interesting when I develop an innocent crush on someone in the class.  Some classes have end and I’ve never even spoken to the guy, so this is not about follow-through!  This just helps make a dull situation more interesting.

My new crush – let’s call him HH (Happy Hottie)!  Now, HH is more empirically hot than most of the others I’ve crushed on in years past, but I can see how maybe some might not think so.  I don’t want to say too much about him to give it away, but let’s just say he’s a really nice guy and one of the smartest ones in the room (which is saying a lot in a law class full of geniuses!!!)  It’s almost the end of the semester and I’ve spoken to him MAYBE once – possibly a whole 2 minutes!!    It’s perfect for me – worship from afar!  I believe he is secretly dating someone in our section – hope so – they’d be great together if I couldnt have him!!

So, as you can see – law school is totally high school!!  Even I, an “older student” has crushes and crap!!  Can I click my heels like Dorothy and it be 3 years from now – I’m a Jr Associate at some great firm and all of this nonsense is behind me…

well, if HH doesn’t want me putting up a bubble gum pink, Christmas tree (again,) he should be a little more courteous whilst  primping for his Sunday 6am tee time.

as he channeled his inner John Daly, whacking the silly white ball through the dragon’s mouth, the early awakened beasts and i begrudgingly made the most of our unexpected wake up call. we decided to yield to madison avenue, the malls, markets, and plain ol’ holiday madness. the four of us surrendered to starbucks: their evil eggnog lattes 1 friggin day after Halloween?!?!!?! we put up the christmas tree.

two french presses later, we four were cutting a rug to Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass Christmas Album (a must for tree decorating) and erected the pepto bismo-like sapling.

why such a hue for a Christmas tree you ask? well……..my mother IS Christmas. i think last year she had 7 trees? each more beautiful than the next with tulle, crystals, feathers, fresh flowers, real life fairies, etc. Preston Bailey would have pee’d himself. one gigantic wall in her house just……..nutcrackers (giant, wee, grisly, angelic, russian, asian, ???) there isn’t a room in her house that does not emit clover, amber and orange spice. the woman knows how to stage a holiday home. one walk through jane’s house during christmas time, BOOM!!, osama bin laden, on his knee’s, saying the apostles’ creed, giving his life up to jesus. she’s that good people.

anyhow, i know my time constraints: limited. and i know my talent for being crafty: nil. i need a tree that requires zero ornaments that comes pre-lit!! and what girl doesn’t want a pink tree?!?!?! i may not convert muslims with this tree, but i may help some boys come out of the closet. it’s the season to give people!!!!!!

The Wire a achevé sa course au bout de cinq saisons l’an dernier, et  reste, et restera, sans conteste, la meilleure série télévisée de tous les temps. Il serait inutile de la comparer à d’autres afin de remettre en question l’affirmation d’un tel présupposé, car si Six Feet Under, The Sopranos, Deadwood, Homicide, ou même BSG ou Lost parviennent, à mon humble avis, à s’élever très haut, aucune ne parvient à la perfection de The Wire. Vraiment aucune.

La série n’a pourtant jamais gagné un seul Emmy, quoique nominée pour l’épisode “Middle Ground” et le finale “30″, dans la catégorie du meilleur scénario, ça dit a quel point, qu’il s’agisse des oscars ou des emmys, les remises de prix ne veulent vraiment rien dire et sont toujours à côté de la plaque – n’en déplaise aux fans des Sopranos ou de House, dont je fais partie – l’organisation est passé à côté de The Wire, et c’est presque criminel.

Mais ces deux nominations ont au moins le faible mérite de souligner ce qui fait la force de la série, au delà de sa mise en scène sobre et réaliste et de sa distribution extraordinaire. Son écriture. Ainsi, avant de me lancer dans la rédaction d’une critique en bonne et due forme – qui suivra, après avoir fait quelques provisions, notamment en RedBull, coupé mon téléphone portable, et dit à mes proches que je les aime – de ce chef d’œuvre signé David Simon et Ed Burns, je vous propose un petit cadeau de Noël avant la date (les fans le verront ainsi en tout cas) une vidéo signé par le pajiban hh déjà responsable de The Other 100 Best Movie Quotes of All Time et de Heart Of Darkness.

Il ne me restera plus, après celle-ci, qu’à mettre en évidence l’infinie justesse des situations et de la caractérisation, la beauté du vernaculaire policier, ou de l’argot des gangsters, la force et la pertinence des dialogues, qu’ils soient signés par les deux créateurs, respectivement ancien journaliste au Baltimore Sun (autour duquel tourne la saison 5) et ancien policier, ou par les scénaristes George Pelecanos, Dennis Lehane, ou Richard Price, de cette histoire aux accents de tragédie grecque de la corruption et l’incompétence de ceux qui nous dirigent et du pourrissement du tissu social américain, et de combat entre un Bien parfois impossible à garder intact, et un Mal bien difficile à définir. Car honnêtement, cette vidéo condense à merveille l’essence de cette série hors du commun.

I år understryker talarna på SIME-konferensen nyttan med webben med realtid som slagord. Den sociala webben har växt från det vi tidigare refererade till som webb 2.0 ett tydligt lekstadie till vad som idag är ett webb som faktiskt kan vara ett verktyg till att förändra världen, och inte bara i syfte för ekonomisk lönsamhet. Jag minns faktiskt en diskussion jag hade med en god vän med frågeställningen om social media verkligen kan hjälpa till att förändra världen. Idag har vi sett häpnadsväckande demonstrationer och modeller om precis det vi diskuterade på Falafelkungen för två år sedan, för mig råder det ingen diskussion längre.

Dagen inleds starkt med Jesper Kärrbrink (VD på Eniro) som berättar om Eniros övergång från offline till online. Eniro har synnerligen gjort en framgångsrik övergång och på kuppen även intagit stora marknadsandelar på sin onlinemarknad. Kärrbrink berättade att 70% av Eniros sökningar ledar till konvertering (transaction).
En viktig punkter som Kärrbrink tar upp är att man i alla verksamheter bör ta ett steg tillbaka och fråga sig “What are we actually selling”. Vad är det som vi egentligen säljer? Exemplifierat är nyheter med begreppet newspaper. Why is it called Newspaper and what is paper? -A carrier of content.

Claudia Gonzalez, jobbar på UNHCR och FNs expert inom social marknadsföring visar en makalös demonstration på hur FN har anammat sig den sociala webbens funktionalitet i syfte att göra världen till en bättre plats. En problematiken som har varit i fokus är ge förståelse i nyttan av att skänka pengar.
I flyktingläger har de i samarbete med Nokia delat ut mobiltelefoner och undervisnat människor hur de kan dokumentera sin vardag. De har markerat upp alla flyktingläger i Google earth och kopplat det till människors dokumentationer. Kort och gott så kan man då se dessa olika flyktingläger på världen och gå in på individnivå där vardagliga filmpresentationer talar om människornas vardag. En kombination av ambition, genialitet, vilja och några förhållandevis enkla tekniska lösningar ger möjligheten att skapa en relation mellan två världar.

Sara Öhrvall som nyligen klivit in i “sveriges häftigaste tjänst” som chef över Bonnier reserach and development berättar hur Bonnier ska lägga upp sina strategier för innovation på webben genom att bland annat inspireras av andra. Sara Öhrvall jämför Apple, Microsoft och Googles förhållningssätt till innovation och vart Bonnier ligger. Hon menar det i mångt och mycket handlar om att se och innspireras av små, snabba och effektiva aktörer vilket är anledningen att de mer än gärna är med och sponsrar evenemang så som 24 hour business camp, Geek Girls meetup och liknande.

Steven Overman grundare av the realtime prodject tar upp några aspekter av att sätt upp delmål i projekt som gör att helheten inte blir övermäktigt “Short winnings”. Steven Overman talar om värdet av live med madonna som första exempel och fortsätter med  hur download har blivit streaming och vi nu befinner oss i “the time of real” Foursquare är ett företag som nämns i sammanhanget.

Linda stone (author and thought leader with a background as VP at Microsoft and long time executive with Apple who coined the term “continuous partial attention” ) lyfter nivån av tankegånger.

Linda stone tar upp djupare tankegångar och reflektioner om vår interaktion med webben i hennes forskning om continuous partial attention. Det som i en lite knacklig direktöversättning blir “Fortlöpande partiell uppmärksamhet” (rätt mig gärna) beskriver hur vi använder vår uppmärksamhet och förhåller oss till det vi kallar multi-tasking samt att dessa två skiljer sig genom de impulser som driver dem.När vi utför flera uppgifter samtidigt så motiveras vi av en önskan att bli mer produktiva, effektiva och uppdaterade. Vi gör ofta  saker som är automatiska och som kräver minimal kognitiv bearbetning.

Linda stone talar om hur vi kvantifierar vår prioritet likvärdigt när vi gör flera saker samtidigt – vi chattar, kopierar papper, prata i telefon, äter lunch och vill få så många saker gjorda samtidigt som möjligt för att bli effektivare och mer produktiv. När hon frågar hur många som till exempel ibland prioriterar att pilla med mobiltelefonen framför sitt sällskap så sätter hon pricken över i:et i sin tes.
Paul Holman (även kallad Pablos) är en världskänd innovatör och hacker. Pablos visar inledningsvis upp hur man med några enkla knep kan få kotokortsuppgifter utan att röra kontokortet, kan hacka in i någons mobiltelefon eller på hotellnätverket genom en TV.

Pablos (som för övrigt sa upp sig från NASAs rymdforskning) är en internationellt framstående futurist, expert inom IT-säkerhet och som besitter kunskaper som är få förunnat. När han börjar tala om sina nuvarande projekt på Intellectual Ventures Lab (som är ett av de mest framstående labben i världen) så förstår man även att hans ambitioner sträcker sig långt bortom det han till en början visade upp. Modeller och teorier visas upp för hur man kan förhinra cykloner, och väderkatastrofer, få polarisen att sluta smälta och laga ozonlagret.

Im Hamburger Hafen entsteht seit geraumer Zeit ein neuer Stadtteil, die Hafencity. Das “Oval” am Kaiserkai wurde von der Düsseldorfer Architektengruppe Ingenhoven & Partner entworfen. Das Gebäude hat einen elliptischen Baukörper.

Wer viel Beton, Stahl, Glas und verschachtelte Häuser liebt ist in der Hafencity gut aufgehoben. Wer das alles nicht mag, dafür gibts ja noch die schöne alte Speicherstadt.

O.S.T.R. – muzyk, raper, producent, absolwent Akademii Muzycznej w Łodzi i laureat kilku renomowanych konkursów skrzypcowych. Własne próby z Hiphopem rozpoczął w wieku 12 lat – wtedy jeszcze przy pomocy domowego radiomagnetofonu “Kasprzak”. Pierwsze poważne kroki stawiał w ramach łódzkich grup BDC, LWC i Obóz TA. W późniejszym okresie działał już solo.

So HH and I are planning our next honeymoon, and we need your help. We can’t decide whether to go on a relaxing vacation: think lounging by the pool somewhere tropical (Bali, Costa Rica, Belize.)

Or do we go on a “trip” where we actually learn something, see new things, smell new scents, etc; thinking along the lines of Egypt, Russia, or New Zealand.

So what do you think? Rest, relaxation and foo-foo drinks under an umbrella? Or the camels and I comparing toes in the desert?

For the record, our first honeymoon was both a vacation AND a trip. We Eva & Juan Peron’d our way all over Buenos Aires for the first five days, and then rejuvenated in Carmelo, Uruguay for the last five. The perfect honeymoon combo bite.

Nu kā, pirmā bija rasēšana un uz rasēšanu mēs bijām laikā (tā bija tāda vienīgā un īpašā stunda, kur bijām laikā). Mums bija jārasē maziņš darbiņš uz atzīmi (kuru es nesapratu, bet dabūju 7). Jaj!! ^^. Lai nu kā, mēs ar mazo cilvēciņu palikām vēl pusstundu ilgāk kā vajadzēja, jo pirmkārt, skolotāja man paskaidroja kā bija jārasē tas mazais darbiņš un otrkārt runājām arī par mājas rasējumu… He he. :> Tā nu mēs uz gleznošanu aizgājam ar 30 minūšu nokavēšanos.

Labi tas vēl tā, skolotāja tāpat neievēroja, ka mēs nebijām (nu labi ievēroja), bet viņa tāpat neko neteica. Labi, tad mēs uzzīmējām jauno uzstādījumu (puķes, kuru citi jau iesāka gleznot un kurš nākamajā stundā jau ir jāpabeidz), bet nu pofig (atvainojos par izteicienu :>). Tad mēs no gleznošanas aizgājām kādas 20 minūtes ātrāk. Nogājām uz savas nodaļas stāvu un sāku mazajam cilvēciņam paskaidrot rasēšanu, ko taisījām klasē. Nu vo, tā pagāja apmēram puse no pusdienu starpbrīža, tad aizgājām paskatīties, vai rasēšanas skolotāja nav klasē (uz ko mēs īpaši necerējām un, protams, viņas tur nebija).

Tad aizgājām uz kojām, mazais cilvēciņš nolika mantas un paņēma zīmēšanu, tad aizgājām uz veici nopirkt kaut ko ēdamu pusdienām. Atnācām atpakaļ, kad zīmēšanas stunda bija jau sākusies pirms 10 minūtēm, aizgājām pie rasēšanas skolotājas (kur stunda bija pirmajiem apģērbiem o.O), tad mazais cilvēciņš parādīja mūsu kopdarbu, kas tapa pa ~35 minūtēm un dabūja 6. :> Tad aizvilkāmies līdz zīmēšanai ar 20 minūšu kavēšanos, bet viņi tāpat neko nebija sākuši darīt (tā kā neko mēs nenokavējām) un sākām zīmēs ģipša lūpas! ^^.

Pēc kaut kur pusstundas mazajam cilvēciņam pazvanīja mamma un tad mēs nogājām pie viņas, papļāpājām, mazais cilvēciņš iegāja vēl kancelejā un paņēma paraugu kā rakstīt izziņu. Tad atvadījāmies no viņas mammas un uzgājām atkal uz zīmēšanas klasi, paņēmām jakas un gājām uz kojām pakaļ divām lapām, lai uz vienas uzrakstītu  izziņu un uz otras uzrakstītu paraugu (lai visu laiku nav jānēsā līdzi). Tad atnācām atpakaļ uz skolu, gaitenī uz soliņa mazais cilvēciņš sāka rakstīt izziņu un es uzskrēju uz zīmēšanas klasi, lai paņemtu pildspalvu un uzrakstītu viņai paraugu. Pēc tam viņa aiznesa izziņu uz kanceleju un mēs gājām atpakaļ zīmēt ģipša lūpas (ko mums vairs tiešām negribējās darīt ;D ). Bet nu kas jādara, jādara. Pēc kaut kur 40 minūtēm mēs sapratām, ka neko neuzzīmēsim un izdomājām, ka jāaiziet pakaļ fotoaparātam uz kojiņām un jānofotografē. Tā nu mēs atkal gājām uz kojām, kad atnācām atpakaļ kursa biedri domāja, ka mēs esam dīvainas, jo visu laiku kavējam un ejam kaut kur laukā. ;D

Tad vēl kaut kur pa vidu es satiku savu draudzeni, no paralēlkursa, kuru nebiju tik sen satikusi. Pastāstīju visu savu īpašās dienas plānu un viņa sāka par mani smieties, jo domāja, ka esmu galīgi jau sagājusi sviestā, bet tā nemaz nebija. ;D Man ļoti patika, ka man šodien bija garāka rasēšanas stunda kā parasti, galu galā tā taču ir mana mīļākā stunda! (mm) ;D Vienkārši (love)! ;]

Tāpēc es saku šo dienu var nosaukt par “sporta” dienu, jo mēs visu laiku kaut kur staigājām un reāli vienīgā stunda, kur mēs kaut ko normāli izdarījām bija rasēšana. Ā, tad vēl par zīmēšanas mājasdarbiem mazais cilvēciņš dabūja 7, bet es tikai 6, bet tas ir tīri subjektīvi, jo man no diviem mājas darbiem bija tikai viens. Reāli, ja es būtu kaut vai tikai otro mājasdarbu nedaudz ieskicējusi es būtu arī dabūjusi 7. Damn it! ;[

Jā! Šī diena tiešām ir bijusi pilnvērtīga, ņemot vērā, ka es rasējumu varu izlabot un nodot pirmdien! ^^. Ehh. Vispār esmu tik nenormāli laimīga par šo dienu. ;D Reāli, pat ja mēs neko nedarījām (un mums nekas nesanāca ne zīmēšanā, ne gleznošanā) šī diena bija jautra! ;D

Jā, gan jau šo bullšitu neviens neizlasīs, bet man vienalga! ^^. Man gribējās kaut ko uzrakstīt, jo pirmkārt, sen neko nebiju šeit rakstījusi un otrkārt, gribējās kādam pastāstīt par šo dienu. ;P Tā kā paši vainīgi, ja nelasījāt. ;D

(mm) Iesaku izlasīt visiem, kuri vispār kādreiz lasa grāmatas. Reāli tā tagad būs mana pati, pati mīļākā grāmata! ^^. Jaj! Es dievinu detektīvus. :> Heh. Tāks. Laikam vairāk neko es arī negribēju rakstīt. Ā, nē, kā jums vispār klājas? :> Nu jā, jums jau ir brīvlaiks (vēl pagaidām) nekā dažiem labiem, bet nu enīvej, man arī var iet tik pat jautri pa skolu kā jums pa brīvlaiku! ;]]

Huh. Tikko izlasīju visu to, ko biju sadrukājusi un palaboju dažus vārdus, kur iztrūka kāds burtiņš. Vispār nedomāju, ka sanāks tik gari. ;D Bet nu vismaz jums būt, ko darīt lasot.. :> He he. Nu jā, vispār es nedomāju, ka varu kaut ko tik garu arī kādreiz uzrakstīt, bet kā saka vienmēr pienāk pirmā reize. Ā, pareiz, man šodien ļoti iepatikās rasēšanas skolotājas mīļākais teiciens “Lai ir grūt, vajag spēt, stipram būt un pārrasēt” /Rainis/. :> Vai nav feins? ;D Nu jā, labi, tagad gan čau, vēl tikai pameklēšu, vai nav kāda bilde, ko ielikt. ^^.

Well this pretty much sums up the view of my weekend.  Except for the two classes I taught on Saturday I pretty much have been in my bathtub trying to get warm. Even though, remarkably, the thermometer reads I am QUITE toasty??!!?!?!

Swine flu you will not have me! I do not eat swine, I do not socialize with swine (by choice), and I’m certainly not going to be infected with your silly cliche’d virus. I’ve decided instead that this is the canine flu. If I were to get a virus I would much rather it be of the pooch variety, so that is the way it will be (arms crossed.)

Grand illusions of tag sales, planting succulents, reading Tolstoy, adopting a Korean orphan (with special needs of course,) and re-picketing the front fence were dashed friday afternoon when my fever spiked so high I started conversing with my nightstand.

Six shots of Nyquil, 4 doses of Comtrex, 100,000 Oscillococcinum pellets, and a partridge in a pear tree later, and I was not only still sick, but I was crazy high from all the Nyquil.

Sunday night I felt I owed HH. He had scrapped all of our weekend hijinks in exchange for taking care of Althea Flynt. I rarely cook for my beloved. It’s not that I don’t love to cook for him, but it’s so much easier to nap instead.

Two different stir fry’s with the intent to arm us both with the phytonutrients necessary to stave off any other virus’ and or bacterium that try to come knock us down. Watch out muthafucka’s we’ve eaten our veggies!!! GRRRRRRR!!!!

And lastly, because it’s that time of year, and because he is the hunkiest of hubby’s’ I made pumpkin bread for HH. I must say the recipe I use is AMAZING (I omit the walnuts,) but another incredible recipe (and 90% less time and energy) is the Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Muffin/Bread Mix.
