<p>Just five months after it&#8217;s US release, <em><strong>Metal Gear Solid</strong></em> is coming to Europe as a PS one Classic via PlayStation Network this Thursday. Costing <strong>£7.99 </strong>or <strong>€9.99</strong>, the 3D reimagining of Hideo Kojima&#8217;s classic elevated the lesser known series to a cult phenomenon and can now be played on our PSPs &#8211; finally. Five months is a long time to wait considering it&#8217;s a port of a PS1 game but at least now we can take a little bit of Snake with us where ever we go.</p>

<p>This is the one that instigated this particular post. I was looking up tour dates for Video Games Live, then YouTubing some of their past performances when I came across some live Black Mages stuff. Man, they rock it out. I own their first two CDs, so I hadn&#8217;t heard any other tracks of theirs. Until this one! I&#8217;m actually replaying FF VIII now, so it made this even better!</p>

<p>Final boss music doesn&#8217;t &#8220;work&#8221; for me unless it has a certain feel. I can&#8217;t describe it any better than &#8220;no second chances, if we fail now everyone we know will die.&#8221; That particular emotional connect with me happens in the first 10 seconds of this track. It&#8217;s from a friggin&#8217; Game Boy, too! I mean, damn.</p>

<p>Let&#8217;s end on an emotional note. If you&#8217;ve never played MGS4, you may want to play the ENTIRE DAMN SERIES so it&#8217;ll make sense. This song is the culmination of 20 years of suspense and cliffhangers for me. Literally &#8211; 20 years. Metal Gear came out when I was wee lil&#8217; gamer.</p>

<p>There&#8217;s got to be a word for this punch-in-the-gut feeling this song gives me. It&#8217;s sad, but on a level I can&#8217;t really describe. This might be &#8211; and probably is &#8211; because I&#8217;m directly connecting it with the moment in the game where the song is played (arguably one of the greatest gaming moments ever). This track makes me think &#8220;we&#8217;re going to fail, things are going to get bad for those left behind, now they&#8217;re on their own.&#8221; It&#8217;s strange how I can&#8217;t connect music to emotions &#8211; I have to connect them to fictional events that I make in my head. Perhaps that&#8217;s due to how emotionally and structurally complex music can be. It can&#8217;t be easily simplified.</p>
<p>I just realized that Nobuo Uematsu was three of my choices. Must be good, right?</p>

<title><![CDATA[MGS4: Release, Reaction, Retrospect]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Well, it&#8217;s been over a year since I wrote on this blog. Life took various twists and turns and I ended up one thousand miles from home. In that regard, I suppose, you could say my life is similar to the game I&#8217;m discussing in this post.</p>

<p>Metal Gear Solid 4 has been discussed to death. No doubt about it. However, even if you dig elbow deep into the recesses of the internet, you&#8217;d be hard pressed to find reviews that weren&#8217;t clouded in the excessive  hype, inflated scores and deep seated nostalgia that the finale of a series spanning two decades would naturally bring with it. Couple that with a fandom that goes to extreme lengths to defend even the most embarrassing aspects of their beloved franchise and you&#8217;ve got yourself a game that carries itself on name alone.</p>
<p>These articles weren&#8217;t without criticism, however. Many focus on the complaint that MGS4 often feels like watching a movie that intermittently asks you to play a video game to progress the plot. Others slam series creator Hideo Kojima&#8217;s penchant for the self referential and his less than subtle attempts to weave callbacks into the plot itself.  Attention is frequently drawn to the convoluted narrative, uneven game play, lazy explanations and frequent load screens.</p>
<p>So how did something that could be collectively summed up by critics as &#8220;a game that&#8217;s more of a poorly written, confusing, cliche-ridden movie than a game&#8221; receive <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_Gear_Solid_4#Critical_Reception" target="_blank">nearly perfect scores?</a></p>
<p><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_Gear_Solid_4#Critical_Reception" target="_blank"><!--more--></a></p>
<p>MGS4 effectively streamlined some of the shortcomings of its predecessors, it took the trademark stealth approach of the series to some new locations, introduced some novel game play concepts and even managed to be visually stunning while doing so. But are these merits deserving of such acclaim when we take into account the aforementioned criticisms leveled against it? In retrospect, I believe the answer is no.</p>
<p><strong>This is mostly because Metal Gear Solid 4 did not and could not work as a standalone game in the series.</strong></p>
<p>For such a highly anticipated game that was being hailed as a &#8220;platform savior&#8221;&#8211;even getting its own PS3 bundle&#8211; it&#8217;s hardly accessible. I cringe to think of the level of WTF experienced by the unsuspecting gamer who picks this title up without any previous MGS experience. The plot tries to be a little more user friendly by having frequent &#8220;flashback&#8221; scenes that can be triggered by hitting the X button during cut scenes.</p>
<p>But who are these really for? They&#8217;re not expository enough to help the uninformed and as a lifelong Metal Gear fan, I didn&#8217;t need to see 15 pieces of dated character art and screen shots to remind me who Naomi Hunter is whenever her name is mentioned. If I choose not to watch these flashbacks, I have to endure an awkward, unnatural moment of silence during a cutscene brandished with a neon orange &#8220;X&#8221; symbol.  Things like this make me think that Kojima was so busy beating me over the head with nostalgia that he forgot to include the aspects of his works that <em>make </em>me nostalgic for them.</p>

<p>The codec is a perfect example of this.  In previous installments, the codec served as Snake&#8217;s connection to the world outside his mission. A team of analysts, weapons experts, medics and the like provided him with back up, humorous banter and optional expanded plot exposition every step of the way. In MGS4 , Snake is a more experienced soldier and the narrative seems to suggest that he doesn&#8217;t need back up anymore. But Otacon&#8211;one of the only two contacts in the entire game&#8211;still feels the need to tell Snake that he&#8217;s on a mission, how to fire a gun and that he needs to get from Point A to Point B. Unfortunately, with a few exceptions, that&#8217;s all Snake&#8217;s best friend really has to say. Whether you hated the codec conversations in the past or not, they were largely responsible for creating the feeling that Snake was on a solo mission and breathed life into the world around him. Having the option of hearing unnecessary amounts of detail about seemingly insignificant in-game objects was part of the magic of MGS.</p>
<p>And while the game still gives you the option to avoid fighting all together in favor of sneaking past guards, the level design and game mechanics in many ways make full force combat the more attractive option. Why would I care about hiding the body of a guard when so many areas of the game are full blown war zones? Why would I care about avoiding an alert status when I have close to thirty militiamen to assist me in combat? Kojima advertised the game with the slogan &#8220;No Place To Hide&#8221; at TGS 05, but it becomes clear that with nowhere to hide and no real places to infiltrate, the titular Tactical Espionage Action aspect is no where to be found.</p>
<p>At first glance, these sound like mild complaints that one could counter with the argument that Kojima could not have possibly addressed every fan desire. But when one recognizes that he went to painstaking lengths to do just that, it&#8217;s hard to understand how he managed to overlook so many elements of what separates Metal Gear from other action games.</p>
<p><strong>So, again, if MGS4 doesn&#8217;t entirely work as an MGS title and it&#8217;s not accessible enough to stand on its own two feet; why was it lavished with praise by pretty much every gaming publication on earth? </strong></p>
<p>Probably for the same reasons that I initially thought of it as a good game.<br />
It wrapped up the story that many dedicated gamers had been following for a decade or two, even if the explanations weren&#8217;t as cool as we expected them to be. We got to be Solid Snake again&#8211;for the first time since 1998&#8211;for the entire game, even if the game itself wasn&#8217;t that long. And even though there were instances that made us cringe, the fan service was effective enough to make us smile at least once. In a sense, Kojima could do no wrong. He delivered on his promise,  even if it wasn&#8217;t in the way we wanted. He let us bid farewell to a character and a game that at some point in our lives, we really cared about and even managed to give us a few more very memorable sequences along the way.</p>
<p>And for those reasons, game journalism took a break from objectivity.<br />
Even if it doesn&#8217;t make much sense in retrospect.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="color:#000000;">Boktai: the Sun is in your Hand pode não ter tido o destaque merecido na época de seu lançamento, mas vendeu o bastante para garantir sua continuação. A grande inovação do game foi ter implementado um sensor solar no portátil.</span></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="color:#000000;">Este sensor possibilta ao jogador fazer coisas bem interessantes como carregar a energia para canalizá-la em ataques especiais ou mesmo melhorar atributos do personagem, ou ainda resolver puzzles. O problema disso tudo é justamente o sol. Afinal o sol não está em nossas cabeças 24 horas por dia, ou seja, nada de jogatinas noturnas!</span></p>

<p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="color:#000000;">Os traços são em 2D e os gráficos se assemelham muito a um anime. As batalhas são por tempo real (um dia RPGs por turnos serão lendários), mas enfim, customização de armas e personagens? Ok.</span></p>

<p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="color:#000000;">Mais de sete localizações no mapa.</span></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="color:#000000;"> Sensor solar com sensibilidade a variações de temperatura. (Quer dizer que não adianta acender uma lâmpada em cima do cartucho espertalhão).</span></p>

<div style="text-align:justify;"><span style="color:#000000;"><strong>Um relógio</strong>, grande coisa, mas o relógio em Boktai faz diferença pois com ele é possível ver variações nas horas do dia no jogo e dependendo de que horas sejam os eventos do game variam, como alguns inimigos que podem estar dormindo as 18:00hs ou outros que podem estar caçando as 15:00hs.</span></div>

Vocês acreditam nessa, minha gente??? A comunidade virtual de artistas <em>Pixiv</em> (equivalente japonesa do DeviantArt) está promovendo o concurso, que terá mais dois juízes: Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, criador do anime <em>Neon Genesis Evangelion</em>, e Ryuji Gotsubo, ilustrador das edições japonesas dos livros <em>Twilight</em>. Segundo o pessoal da <em>Pixiv</em>, todos os três são grandes fãs da série dos vampiros adolescentes.</p>

Nada contra <em>Twilight</em>, mas vamos concordar que isso foi totalmente aleatório, né? <p>Depois que <em>Hideo Kojima</em> prometeu, no seu blog (<a href="http://cavves.wordpress.com/2009/10/19/kojima-promete-novo-z-o-e/" target="_blank">aqui</a>), que uma sequência para <strong>Zone of Enders</strong> seria lançada no futuro, o criador de <strong>Metal Gear Solid</strong> confessa agora que a reação foi muito superior à esperada.</p>
<p>Kojima voltou a escrever <a href="http://ameblo.jp/kp-blogcast/entry-10366236399.html" target="_blank">no seu blog</a> e revelou que a reação foi das maiores vistas no blog, a contagem dos níveis de acesso alcançou níveis apenas vistos na <strong>Tokyo Game Show</strong> e o seu texto percorreu o mundo através da internet e imprensa.</p>
<p>Kojima ouviu ainda rumores que o preço para a versão usada de Anubis, o nome da versão Japonesa de <strong>ZOE 2</strong>, subiu e agora é encarado com manifestações de entusiasmo por parte de funcionários.</p>
<p>Internamente, na <strong>Kojima Productions</strong>, quando encontra membros que trabalharam em Anubis estes dizem que, &#8220;Eu li o teu BLOG. É verdade?&#8221; e também, &#8220;Quando vamos fazer Anubis?&#8221; e ainda, &#8220;Por favor deixa-me participar nele!&#8221;</p>
<p>Alguns já começaram mesmo a colocar o Anubis nas suas mesas mas Kojima pede para esperar mais um pouco.</p>

<p>En una reciente <a href="http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3176582">entrevista</a> concedida a Famitsu, entrevista en la que también estaba <strong>Patrice Desilets</strong>, productor creativo de <strong>Assassin´s Creed II</strong>, <strong>Hideo Kojima </strong>ha hablado del título de Ubisoft, de <strong>Uncharted 2 y de Modern Warfare 2. <!--more--></strong></p>
<p><strong> </strong>&#8220;<em>Se lo he dicho a todo el mundo que me ha entrevistado, creo que </em><strong><em>hay tres juegos que destacan sobre el resto este año. Uno es Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, otro Uncharted 2 y el otro Assassin´s Creed II. Los tres son increíbles</em></strong>&#8220;.</p>
<p>Además, <strong>Kojima</strong> asegura que hay mucha presión de la industria, tanto por parte de los jugadores, como de la prensa sobre <strong>Assassin´s Creed II</strong>, pero sabe que &#8220;<em>Patrice (el productor del título) se ha sabido imponer a la presión y llevará el título a buen puerto</em>&#8220;. Preguntado por esta presión <strong>Patrice Desilets</strong> afirma que:</p>
<p>&#8220;<em>nunca he sentido esa presión, pero con Kojima diciendo esas cosas empiezo a sentirla</em>&#8220;.</p>
<p>Pa mi que a ese pinche Kojima le dieron un buen billete para que hablara bien de esos juegos, todo es manipulado y están creando una conspiración secreta tipo Fringe.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="color:#000000;">O game conta com um visual melhorado dando-se impressão de estar jogando um MMORPG (massive multiplayer online role-playing game) com um sistema de batalha inovador (que foi o motivo de todos os fãs de FF acostumados as batalhas por turno largarem este e irem jogar os clássicos) porém o jogo não tem nenhum defeito ao meu ver e ao ver da Famitsu, pelo  contrário o jogo possui um visual mais realista, cenários grandiosos e um sistema de exploração incrível. </span></p>

Je gebruikt gewoon de pictogram-functie op je DS, je zet een vriend of vriendin in een nabijgelegen klaslokaal, of gewoon in de struikjes onder het raam. Weet je even niet wat je moet antwoorden, dan krabbel je iets op het beeldscherm van je DS en nog geen twee tellen later ben je weer wat minder ver verwijderd van een voldoende. Of je spreekt de verplichte stof in op de MP3 functie en luistert ze tijdens het maken van het tentamen af. Zo blijkt wel uit een forumtopic op <a href="http://www.ngamer.nl" target="_blank">[N]Gamer.nl.</a> Ik grapte nog, dat ouders nu geen enkele reden meer kunnen hebben om te beweren dat gamen niet educatief is.</p>
<p>Het valt me op dat kritiek op de maatschappij in meer en meer games door begint te dringen. Vaak zonder theoretische assumpties, gewoon als statement tussen neus en lippen door. Een kniesoor die er echt op let, maar het is er wel. Natuurlijk kennen we allemaal de core business in games als Zelda (het bestrijden van het kwaad), maar ook een game als het nog uit te komen Rabbids Go Home (waarover binnen enkele dagen meer) blijkt zich af te zetten tegen de huidige consumptiemaatschappij. Toch blijft het tot op heden beperkt tot een lichte noot in de verhaallijn van diverse games.</p>
<p>De Japanse gameontwikkelaar Hideo Kojima vormt een uitzondering op de regel. Een nieuwsbericht op <a href="http://www.gamez.nl" target="_blank">Gamez.nl </a>zette me vandaag aan het denken. Kojima werkt namelijk aan de uitvoering van de aankomende PSP game Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, waaruit verschillende theoretische noties uit de internationale betrekkingen af te leiden zijn. Bijvoorbeeld de klassiek liberale gedachte dat conflict en oorlog af te leiden zijn van de menselijke natuur; de oorlog van allen tegen allen ligt besloten in de spreekwoordelijke aard van het beestje. Maar ook Immanuel Kant’s theorie dat oorlogen voorkomen moeten worden door internationaal recht en het creëren van samenwerkingsverbanden als de EU.</p>
<p>Kojima heeft zelf ook een duidelijk oordeel over de vorming van een rechtvaardiger wereldorde. Zo zegt hij op zijn eigen website (bron: nu.nl):</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;President Obama, die een wereld zonder nucleaire wapens bepleitte in Praag, heeft de Nobelprijs voor de Vrede gewonnen”, schrijft Kojima op zijn website. “Is het tijdperk dan eindelijk aan het veranderen? Het begin van een echt Peace Walker-plan? Ik hoop dat het werkelijkheid wordt. ‘Vrede zal niet naar je toe lopen, je moet elkaar tegemoet komen. Vanuit de sportschool.’&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Een opvallende uitspraak voor iemand die laat zien zoveel van theorieën uit de internationale betrekkingen te weten. Hij gaat daarmee lijnrecht in tegen een redelijk dominante discours, waarin gesteld wordt dat vrede en stabiliteit juist bevorderd en in stand gehouden worden door het bestaan van nucleaire wapens. Natiestaten zijn namelijk veel minder snel geneigd deze wapens ook in te zetten, omdat de gevolgen ervan enorm kostbaar en gevaarlijk zijn. Als ontmanteling wereldwijd doorgevoerd wordt, zullen grootmachten naar nieuwe instrumenten op zoek moeten om hun positie te behouden.</p>
<p>Het gaat te ver om hier een discussie van dergelijke orde te gaan voeren, dus ik zal niet verder ingaan op deze theoretische hypothesen. Wel is duidelijk dat ik deze game absoluut ga spelen, omdat ik erg benieuwd ben naar de uiteindelijke uitwerking en nog meer naar de handtekening van Kojima. Dit kan echter pas medio 2010. Just on this years GDC in San Francisco, Jideo Kojima, designer of the Metal Gear series, stated how the initial restrains in hardware capacity were the driving force before his initial design of the stealth action genre defining game. Not being able to handle enough enemy characters on screen, the mechanic evolved seemingly naturally. Additional examples of this principle abound on many other design domains. One of them: Computers.</p>
<p>Initial development had many constraints. Processing capacity was limited, memory was expensive, input was analog. Then this constraints started to disappear, and an emphasis was placed on achieving new things with this innovative tool, expanding its possibilities. There was a new focus on achieving results. Some improvements took place on the interfaces, both for inputs and outputs. And computing power started migrating to other product domains, to add new capabilities; add new possible results.</p>
<p>Today, processing capacity is high enough to perform many regular mundane tasks with precision, and memory is relatively inexpensive. However, many companies still have the original engineering, results oriented approach. Some have figured out this might not be enough, and have shifted to improve the aesthetic design of their products. </p>
<p>The truth is that a new constraint needs to be set to spur the new wave of innovation: The user. Designers need to start thinking to create solutions that are bounded by its preferences and needs. It can&#8217;t be about providing them with results; they also need to be usable and simple to get. And it can&#8217;t be restricted to computers. It is a need in all design domains. The few that have already embraced this approach are thriving.</p>

<p><strong>Metal Gear Solid: Philanthropy</strong> es una película <strong>sin fines de lucro</strong> realizada por un grupo de estudiantes llamado <strong>Hive Division</strong>. Claramente no guarda relación ninguna con la empresa que realizó el juego (<em>Kojima Productions</em>) pero si mantiene el hilo argumental del mismo. Es decir, sí, tenemos a Snake y tenemos <strong>una película sobre Metal Gear Solid</strong>.</p>
<p>Hace años que se viene trabajando esta idea, y realmente acá es donde yo introduzco un aplauso vía internet a estas personas por el <strong>MAGNÍFICO</strong> trabajo que realizaron. Sí, esa misma palabra.<br />
Es decir, básicamente son personas que por amor a la saga y al cine decidieron hacer por su cuenta una película que realmente les quedó MUY bien para haberse gastado <strong>únicamente la suma de 10.000 euros</strong> y <strong>cinco años de trabajo</strong>.<br />
La película, pese a venir de italianos, está completamente en inglés y tengo que admitir que se pasaron con la voz de Solid Snake, les quedó muy muy bien. Lo mismo con los efectos 3D, los Metal Gears, en fin, la mayoría de los efectos están perfectamente logrados. Quizás deberían pulir un poco las explosiones (?).</p>

<p>Sobre la música&#8230; ¡Otro buen punto!.<br />
Aunque obviamente quiero decirles que mi crítica se basa en el argumento de <em>&#8220;No se gastaron fortunas como en Hollywood, así que si lograron algo decente vale como bueno-excelente&#8221;</em> (y encima me salió una especie de rima).</p>
<p>La película tiene algunos guiños del juego, como la inclusión de escenas estilo-codec, con el sonido y todo (Cuando lo escuché pensé <em>&#8220;Ahora si que valió la pena bajar 700 mb&#8221;</em>) y algunos chistes bastante usuales en la obra de Kojima (es decir, hicieron un buen trabajo con esas cosas para que se mantenga cierta esencia de lo original).</p>

<p>Ahora pasemos a la historia.<br />
La resumo sin spoilers ni nada raro: Philanthropy <em>-como bien sabe cualquiera que haya jugado Metal Gear Solid 2-</em> es el grupo que crearon Snake y Otacon para prevenir la creación de nuevos MGs y pelear contra la tiranía del mundo (?). En esta película, situada temporalmente antes del título antes mencionada, la idea es que Snake se ve envuelto en una misión en la que debe rescatar a un Senador en un lugar hostil. Bastante común y siguiendo la plantilla de lo que ya conocemos.<br />
No voy a contar nada más ya que tampoco llegamos a conocer mucho.<br />
Podría mencionar la aparición de dos nuevos personajes: un francotirador llamado <em>Pierre Leclerc</em> y una chica bastante rara (ya sabrán por qué) llamada <em>Elizabeth Laeken</em>.</p>

<p>Digo <em>&#8220;tampoco llegamos a conocer mucho&#8221;</em> ya que lo que hay hasta ahora (desafortunadamente) <strong>es solo la primera parte</strong>, con una duración de una hora. El resto llegaría basándose en la recepción por parte de la gente para con el estreno.</p>
<p>Sobre la distribución, como dije, es sin fines de lucro, por lo cual podremos encontrar la película online (en su página principal), en descarga directa y otros métodos más. También tendremos dos versiones en distintas calidades (yo bajé la de 700 mb desde Megaupload). Tendremos también disponibles subtitulos &#8220;oficiales&#8221; en casi todos los idiomas (incluido Español de España y Español de latinoamérica, este último siempre agradecido).</p>
<p>Más no puedo contarles. Solo puedo mantener mi postura de que me encuentro muy satisfecho después de haber encontrado esto y ver que existen proyectos así me pone muy feliz. Es decir, repito, gastaron únicamente 10000 euros e hicieron un trabajo impecable.<br />
Realmente tengo que felicitar a Hive Division y recomendarles a todos mis lectores (solo a los que hayan jugado MGS y tengan algún tipo de amor por la saga) que vean la película. En cuanto lean cosas como <em>&#8220;Outer Heaven&#8221;</em>, o <em>&#8220;Philanthropy&#8221;</em> incluso, van a saber que están volviendo a ver a Snake en acción. Aunque no sea oficial ni nada.
