Audrey Hepburn once said, “Happy girls are the prettiest.”  On a daily basis my mom always tells me something similar to that, “Nobody likes you because you are too sarcastic and mean.”

Am I supposed to infer something from this?

I mean, I think I’m pretty awesome.  Haven’t you ever seen the movies High Fidelity? Say Anything? Better Off Dead?  Sixteen Candles? The Breakfast Club?  I am John Cusack and Molly Ringwald’s character in all those movies.  How does that not make me awesome?

Sure, I might care about playing my 7″ records over hearing my friends “life” problems that usually consist in getting too drunk and sleeping with some low life slob.  And yes, I may judge a person based on the type of music and films they like, but is anything wrong with that?  I mean, even in High Fidelity, Rob (Cusack) says, “…I agreed that what really matters is what you like, not what you are like… Books, records, films – these things matter. Call me shallow but it’s the fuckin’ truth, and by this measure I was having one of the best dates of my life.”  I’m not alone here.  At least I know there is a fictional character who believes in the same thing as me.

For decades they were sitting pretty at the bottom of stiff cartons d’invitation. Good, old fashioned smart dress codes. Smart like in Cary Grant. Smart ass!

Then came management by objectives and project management science. MBO. PM. And other acronyms. Such as S.M.A.R.T. objectives. Challenging…

The brain child of a car- and a watch-maker. Colorful and small, they colonized Rome and other maze-like Italian cities. Not so sure about the rest of the world. They were not made of chocolate, but they could be parked like thrash bins. They took up roughly the same size. Smart Mercedes Benz cars. Wow!

Then also cars became obsolete. Enter the smart cards. We can now check-in with them and unblock ubiquitous car-sharing vehicles. Cool.

Yes, you can liaise with the office from home, and the office liaises with you just everywhere else. Smartphones. Multitasking. (Or the end of cool).

Since a couple of years we’re reading more and more about them. Now we’re understanding better what they are. MeinMann is working now on their costs/benefits, who still protect their mystery fiercely, though. Smart grids are coming. They are the future. Awesome.

De Mazière, the new Interior Minister of the Merkel government, said stop to Aufbau-Ost. He said now innovation is needed. And growth. Guess what? A smart one. Ach so…

O que eu mais gosto nesse filme? A mania de fazer listas.

Top five things I miss about Laura:  1 - Sense of humor. Very dry, but it can also be warm and forgiving. And she’s got one of the best all time laughs in the history of all time laughs, she laughs with her entire body.  2-  she’s got character. Or at least she had character before the Ian nightmare. She’s loyal and honest, and she doesn’t even take it out on people when she’s having a bad day. That’s character. 3 – miss her smell, and the way she tastes. It’s a mystery of human chemistry and I don’t understand it, some people, as far as their senses are concerned, just feel like home. 4 – I really dig how she walks around. It’s like she doesn’t care how she looks or what she projects and it’s not that she doesn’t care it’s just, she’s not affected I guess, and that gives her grace. And 5; she does this thing in bed when she can’t get to sleep, she kinda half moans and then rubs her feet together an equal number of times… it just kills me. Believe me, I mean, I could do a top five things about her that drive me crazy but it’s just your garden variety women you know, schizo stuff and that’s the kind of thing that got me here.

Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?

I feel bad about this loyal FilmWipe readers.  For the second night in a row of my long awaited comeback, I am going to talk about how much I have hated a film.  Don’t get me wrong this film is no Rudo y Cursi. There are actually moments that are actually enjoyable.  However, the plot made my eyes, ears and brain wish that I was being kidnapped by the SS and whisked of to Krackow for instant execution.  Every single predictable minute was as excruciating as sand papering my genitals and then squeezing lemon juice on to them.  I would guess that within 30 second of the film making itself clear I knew what exactly what was going to happen.  I will be h0nest I feel the need to give a bit of the plot of the way in this review to clearly explain what is so bad about this.  Anyway, sit  back relax and find out why you should avoid, avoid, avoid An Education.

The film follows Jenny (Carey Muligan) a school girl growing up in suburban 60s London, aiming to go to Oxford.  She is repressed by her father, Jack (Alfred Molina) who makes her work obsessively in order to fulfil the ambition.  One day she is caught waiting for a lift in the rain.  After waiting for a long time for a bus on a rainy day, she is offered a lift home by David (Peter Sarsgaard).  He chases after her for several weeks impressing her normally hard line parents enough to letting her go on trips with him.  He shows her a life she could only imagine.  However, things turn sour when he proposes.  This leaves Jenny in the position of trying to decide whether she stays at school and goes to Oxford or leaves and gets married.

The acting in the film is generally very good.  Carey Muligan is superb as is Alfred Molina.  The father daughter relationship between the pair is both gritty and yet touching and has certain element of truth in relation to the era.  However, I did not understand the rationale behind Peter Sarsgaard and Dominic Cooper’s (Danny) casting.  The pair are both excellent actors, but should have been playing each others role.  Cooper is young and charming.  His obvious chemistry with Muligan (exhibited only for a brief second) was so intense it made the remainder of the relationship between Jenny and David seem flimsy at best.  Similarly Peter Sarsgaard would have suited the role of Danny much better.  Also it would have made the characters relationship with Helen (Rosamund Pike) seem plausible.  As it was Rosamund Pike looked as if she was doing an impersonation of Gary Glitter by dating someone dramatically younger than herself.  It looked appalling on screen and detracted from the film as a whole.

The script was excellent.  Nick Hornby (Writer of High Fidelity and About a Boy) wrote an excellent script with some absolutely brilliant lines.   However, the overall plot was dismal.  The idea of the fallen school girl seduced from her path of academic excellence, drawn instead to a sordid life of fun that almost costs her the dream but instead through hard work and determination achieves anyway, has been done so many times it might as well have been a plot line written by Plato (It probably was).  It would have been more interesting to see Jenny lose her future as a result of this relationship.  Instead the disappointing attempt to play everything safe was both weak and expected.

The worst bit of the film had to be its ending.  After rushing through the reclamation of Jenny’s life  the film flips to Oxford where she is a student.  Here Jenny gives the most patronising sentence  about the last hour and half which is comparable to the ending of the new crossroads “it was all a dream”.  Rubbish.

Overall this is ok.  It is worth watching, but is more of a present for someone you don’t like.  Treat them to this and they will get the message.

1/10 – Tiresome

Last week I saw the newly wide-released Paranormal Activity at Scotia Bank Theatre in Vancouver, BC.  After the last scene of the film (a corker), some dumbshit in the back of the theatre called out, so that everyone could appreciate his well-rounded, thoughtful opinion: “That’s it?  One scary scene?!”  I’m not sure what movie he was watching, but Paranormal Activity is an expertly-crafted nerve-rattling film involving many scary scenes.  As long as you haven’t been lobotomized by Saw and its phalanx of sequels, you will find this film pulse-quickening at the very least.  At most, you will not want to go home afterward.  You will walk around aimlessly searching for others to be with, anybody really, so that you do not have to return to the confines of your own, private, secluded, tucked-away-from-society home.  You know: that place where nobody would hear you screaming and nobody would believe your stories later because you are being terrorized by something that only comes out when you and/or your loved one are alone – and most often when you’re sleeping.

The concept behind Paranormal Activity is very simple: a couple begins experiencing bizarre phenomena at their home and so decides to attempt to record said phenomena with a digital video camera.  Each night, the couple falls asleep with the camera aimed at their sleeping selves: on the right side of the frame is their bed and on the left side is their bedroom door, wide open, almost as if inviting anything creeping around in their dark house to come on in and do what it may.  Not really a spoiler to say “Boy, does it ever.”  The film returns to this setup many times; each time, the anxiety of the moviegoer is ratcheted up another notch, for you know something terrifying is about to happen, and the ante will be upped from the previous go-around.  I won’t tell you what the camera captures, for finding out for yourself is wherein the fun lies.

The phenomena are not isolated to the bedroom however.  The entire house is under siege by a malevolent presence, hell-bent on terrorizing this young couple.  As I mentioned in two previous posts on The Exorcist and Rosemary’s Baby, the home itself becomes a major participant in the terrifying substance of many successful horror films [There will be an upcoming post later this week in which the role of the domestic spaces in The Exorcist and Rosemary’s Baby are discussed in more detail – ed.].  As evidenced in many gothic novels and thrillers – not to mention Lifetime movies –  when your own home has becomes a menacing place, there are not many safe outlets for a body to pursue.

One Scary Scene Man (OSSM) in Scotiabank Theatre cannot fire the proper synapses to gather this concept, but luckily the man behind this film, Orin Peli, has the wherewithal.  Mr. Peli had this to say in an interview with Shocktillyoudrop.com:

I think a lot of people can relate to the question of what happens at night when you’re most vulnerable. You have no idea what’s going on. This taps into the most primal fear, if something is lurking in your home there’s not much you can do about it.

“There’s not much you can do about it” is a nice way of thinking about scary situations.  When there’s some unknown and unseen entity in your home, there is not much you can do about it.  The same can be said about the motivations of strangers.  The same can also be said about the mental activity of other people in general.  For instance, if the person you have trusted, entered a relationship with, and/or moved in with, turns out to have terrifying things going on behind their eyeballs, there is not much you can do about it.  There are not necessarily any psychotics in Paranormal Activity, but the movie does tap into another “primal fear”: that of the utter impenetrability of other people.  No matter how well you think you know somebody, how much you are related to somebody, or how comfortable you feel in somebody else’s presence, you will never truly know what it is like to be that person.  You will never know another person’s true motivations, wishes, desires or thoughts.  It’s hard enough to pinpoint how one’s self feels about things, let alone how another person does.  No matter how much you feel that you know some other person, he or she will still remain other; i.e. different, alternate, opposite.  While that concept is scary, watching victims get tortured for 2 hours is not.  Torture vignettes, as found in the Saw films or movies like Hostel, may be titillating, engaging or setup cleverly, but they are not “scary”.

What OSSM misunderstands is that scary does not equal CGI.  Scary does not equal excessive gore.  Scary cannot happen via repeated visual and sonic bludgeoning.  Scary is found within concept as much as it is found within execution.  Scary is subtle.  Scary must sneak up on you.  Scary is your home, scary is another person and scary is yourself.

On a final note, I was struck by the previews that ran before the screening.  Included in the bunch were a couple for post-apocalyptic CGI-fests: 2012 and The Road.  While I’m holding out hope for The Road based on the excellence of the source material, not-to-mention its wonderful cast (shout out to Omar from The Wire!), 2012 is fairly easy to identify as a waste of time.  After bestowing the Activity audience with visuals of historical landmark after historical landmark falling to the Mayan-predicted apocalyptic forces, the preview ends with John Cusack (has he contributed to a worthwhile film since 2000’s High Fidelity?) hugging his two children and saying something ridiculous to the likes of “We’ll get through this if we just stick together”.  Ouch.  This movie cost $200 million to make, and yet a decent screenwriter couldn’t be found to put worthwhile words in the mouths of characters facing down the end of the world.  The filmmakers are apparently banking on the fact that OSSM and his ilk are solely interested in blow-ups and the pixelated destruction of tourist destinations.

Regardless of 2012’s cynical success at the box office, there is hope my friends. Paranormal Activity cost its maker $.015 million.  That’s right – $15,000.  Saw VI, a direct competitor of Paranormal Activity and a film with a budget about 733 times more than that of Activity, has made $27,000,000 as of November 15^th.  Activity, on the other hand, has made $103,847,000 as of the same date, making it the most profitable independent film ever.  This is a nice tidbit, for it suggests that proud philistines like OSSM are perhaps not as influential as one might think.  But don’t fret young OSSM: you’ll always have the Saw series on DVD and you can spend the remainder your days in the comforts of your own home despising thoughtfulness and subtlety with your tub of Cheetos and with your gray matter switch firmly in the off-position.  I know you and I have a conflicting idea of what scary is, so excuse me when I say that, for me at least, the overwhelming success of Activity is perhaps the least scary aspect of the film.  The thought of you procreating and raising a brood of glazy-eyed mouth-breathers: now that’s scary.

ก่อนที่จะถึงวิธีการใช้งานของโปรเทคเตอร์ตัวนี้ ผมขอเอ่ยถึงข้อดีข้อเสียของ BT ของคุณยิปสักเล็กน้อย

ข้อดี

Best Tractor ออกแบบมาโดยเฉพาะสำหรับโทนอาร์มและเครื่องเล่นแผ่นเสียงนั้น ๆ ทำให้มันสามารถทำงานได้อย่างดี เที่ยงตรง อย่างที่ไม่เคยมีโปรเทคเตอร์แบบยูนิเวอร์แซลตัวไหนเคยทำได้มาก่อน สิ่งที่ผมอยากได้มาตลอดสำหรับโปรเทคเตอร์สำหรับตั้งหัวเข็มก็คือ “ทางเดินของโทนอาร์ม” (Tonearm Path) จุดนี้สำคัญมาก เพราะเรารู้ว่าทุก ๆ การวาดโทนอาร์มจากด้านนอกสุดเข้าไปด้านในสุดนั้นทุก ๆ ระยะจะมีการเออร์เรอร์ (Error) จะมากหรือน้อยขึ้นอยู่กับการติดตั้งหัวเข็มนั่นเอง ดังนั้นถ้าโปรเทคเตอร์ที่สามารถตั้งทางเดินหัวเข็มให้เที่ยงตรงหรือใกล้เคียงที่สุด การเออร์เรอร์หรือความผิดพลาดก้จะน้อยลง

และที่สำคัญอีกประการก็คือมุมองศาของหัวเข็มระหว่างลากจากจุดนอกเข้าสู่จุดใน ก็จะเออร์เรอร์เช่นกัน ดังนั้นการตั้งจุดองศาบนจุด Null Point ทั้งด้านในและด้านนอกจะต้องเที่ยงตรง หรืออย่างน้อยใกล้เคียงความเป็นจริงมากเท่าทีจะสามารถทำได้ อีกประการที่ขาดไม่ได้ก็คือผมต้องการโปรเทคเตอร์ที่เป็นแผ่นเดียว โดยไม่ต้องเคลื่อนโปรเทคเตอร์ไปยังจุด Null Point ทั้งสองจุด (เพราะการเคลื่อนที่โปรเทคเตอร์มากเท่าไหร่ ความเที่ยงตรงก็มากขึ้นเท่านั้น สิ่งที่ผมต้องการทั้งหมดที่ผมต้องการจึงอยู่ใน BT

ข้อเสีย

BT ใช้ได้กับเครื่องเล่นแผ่นเสียงตัวเดียวเท่านั้น ใช้ต่างยี่ห้อไม่ได้ ถ้าคุณคิดเปลี่ยนโทนอาร์มบ่อย ๆ BT อาจจะไม่เหมาะกับคุณ (แต่ปีหนึ่งคุณจะเปลี่ยนโทนอาร์มราคามหาโหดสักกี่อัน)

ราคาค่าตัวของ BT 110 $US ทำให้ผมคิดหนักเหมือนกัน แต่เราซื้อเครื่องเล่นแผ่นเสียงมาในราคาแพงเอาเรื่อง สิ่งที่เราอยากได้คือความสมบูรณ์แบบ ดังนั้นอย่าได้เสียดายเงินเพื่อก้าวไปให้ถึงจุดที่ต้องการ

BT น่าเชื่อถือแค่ไหน ข้อนี้สิครับที่ตอบยาก และผมคิดว่าสิ่งเหล่านี้ต้องลองเองถึงจะรู้

การตั้งหัวเข็มโดย Best Tractor

ก่อนอื่น คุณต้องมีเวลาสัก 2-3 ชั่วโมง แบบว่าไม่ต้องทำอะไร ไม่มีใครโทรศัพท์มากวน หรือภรรยายเรียกไปล้างจาน

1.ข้อแรกคุณต้องใช้สก๊อตเทปปิดที่แพลตเตอร์ไม่ให้มันหมุนไปมา โดยต้องแน่ใจว่ามันจะไม่เคลื่อนไปไหน เพราะถ้าเคลื่อน สิ่งที่คุณตั้งมาแต่ต้นเป็นอันเหลว ต้องเริ่มใหม่ จากนั้นนำ BT วางลงไปบนแลตเตอร์โดยวางตรง Spindle Center แล้วจึงยกโทนอาร์มวัดบนจุดแรกของ BT ซึ่งอยู่ด้านนอกสุด วางปลายเข็มให้ตรงกับเส้นโค้งทางเดินโทนอาร์ม หากปลายเข็มยังไม่ตรงให้ขยับ BT ซ้าย-ขวา ที่สุำคัญหัวเข็มของคุณต้องขนานกับหัวที่ติดตั้งหัวเข็ม วัดจนคิดว่าปลายเข็มวางบนเส้นอย่างพอดี จุดนี้คุณต้องใช้แว่นขยายช่วย มันจะช่วยได้เยอะมากครับ

2.เมื่อวัดจุดแรกได้แล้วคราวนี้ยกโทนอาร์มามาวัดจุด Overhang หรือ จุดด้านในสุดของ BT ถ้าหากหัวเข็มยังไม่ตรงกับเส้นทางเดินโทนอาร์มให้คุณขยับหัวเข็มเข้าออก โดยให้หัวเข็มขนานกับหัวติดตั้งโทนอาร์ม (เห็นไหมครับว่าการติดตั้งสองจุดนี้การขยับเพื่อตั้งแตกต่างกัน) เมื่อขยับจนหัวเข็มจรงทางเดินดทนอาร์มแล้ว ให้คุณกลับไปทำในข้อหนึ่งอีกครั้ง ถ้ายังไม่ตรงก็ให้ขยับ BT เมื่อตรงแล้วก็ทำซ้ำ ข้อสอง ทำซ้ำไปซ้ำมาจนกระทั่งทั้งสองจุดใกล้เคียงทางเดินโทนอาร์ม เป็นอันว่าสำเร็จ

จุด Overhang

ก่อนที่จะพักเพื่อเริ่มใหม่ ให้คุณนำสก๊อตเทปมาติดกับ BT เพื่อมิให้มันเคลื่อนที่ ทำอย่างระมัดระวังที่สุดอย่าให้มันเคลื่อนเด็ดขาด มิฉะนั้นคุณต้องเริ่มใหม่ทั้งหมด

พักดื่มน้ำพักหนึ่งกลับมาตั้งหัวเข็มกันต่อ

ขั้นต่อไปคือการปรับมุมองศาของจุด Null Point

1.นำหัวเข็มมาวางลงบนจุด Inner Null Point วางมันอย่างระมัดระวัง โดยให้ปลายเข็มวางลงบนจุดตัดระหว่างเส้นขนาน ขอให้คุณวางในจุดนั้นแบบตรงที่สุดเท่าที่จะทำได้ ใช้ไฟฉายส่องเป้นการช่วย และใช้แว่นขยายช่วยมอง

วิธีการตั้งก็คือ ให้ก้านเข็มขนานกับเส้นขนาน BT ทำจากกระจก ถ้าคุณเคลื่อสายตาไปทางซ้ายหรือขวา เจ้าเส้นขนานนี้จะกลายเป้นสองเส้น นี่เป็นคำตอบว่าทำไมมันจึงทำจากกระจก ก็เพราะว่าเราต้องเล็งก้านเข็มให้ขนาดกับเส้น จุดที่สังเกตที่ดีที่สุดก็คือ คุณต้องเคลื่อนสายตาจนกว่าเส้นขนานบนด้านบนกับเงาของมันตรงกัน นั่นแหละครับจุดนั้นเป๊ะมาก แล้วดูง่ายด้วย ง่ายกว่าโปรเท็คเตอร์ที่พิมพ์ลงบนพลาสติกมาก เคลื่อนตาจนเงาเส้นขนาน นั่นแหละครับตรงมากๆ

ตอนแรกอาจจะไม่ค่อยคุ้น แต่คุณทำบ่อย ๆ มันจะง่ายขึ้นเองอย่างไม่น่าเชื่อ

ถ้าก้านเข็มไม่ตรง ให้คุณขยับให้ขนาน จากนั้นก็วัดใหม่ วางหัวเข้มลงตรงจุดตัด จนตรงที่สุดนั่นแหละครับ

จุด Null Point ด้านใน ตั้วก้านเข็มให้ขนาน โดยหัวเข็มวางอยุ่บนจุดตัด

2.นำหัวเข็มไปตั้งบนจุด Outer Null Point ทำเหมือนข้อแรกทุกอย่าง

This week in TimeOut Chicago, I read a review about the Chicago Reckless Records chain.

The biggest complaint about Reckless Records was the attitude of the staff. While I have never had a bad encounter with an employee of Reckless Records; there are vinyl stores around town with better reputations for customer service.

Another complaint TimeOut Chicago brought up was the lack of new-release sections in the store. I would say, however, when I decide to go record hunting, the last thing I look for is a well signed “New Release” section. Part of the culture of vinyl stores is the idea of spending hours in the store flipping from album to album in search of one calling my name.

Reckless Records has three city locations, one in the Loop, another in Lakeview, and one in Wicker Park.

Reckless Records was the inspiration for the fictitious Championship Vinyl Store in the 2000 film High Fidelity. High Fidelity is a hilarious film about a record store in the city, and I recommend it to anyone interested in Vinyl.

Over dinner last night, I decided to pop in the High Fidelity DVD, starring John Cusack.

The critically acclaimed flick (certainly by my brother) was pretty darn good. Touched on a lot of issues and as a result was at risk of not knowing how or when to close. For my part, I liked that it had a happy ending – yes, I’m that kind of person. 

But it was a relatively mature happy ending. Bob (Cusack) comes to a realisation about his relationships. He grows. And the importance of this is a lesson worth pulling from anywhere and everywhere and drumming into your soul as often as you can.

He’s just fun to watch. As is Jack Black – an absolute riot.

Alright, so I have decided to blog more. Why, you might ask? Could it be that I have something interesting to say? No, not particularly. Perhaps I am embarking on some sort of quest/journey that could be interesting/informative? Nope. Do I plan on posting pictures of cute animals? Maybe, I can’t really say a definitive no. Is it because I have nothing else really going on in my life right now? Precisely.

So…how to begin…

I am going to borrow from one of my favorite movies of all time: High Fidelity (staring John Cusack and Jack Black, check it out). No, I am not going to display Cosby sweaters or chronicle epic breakups of my past. Rather, I am going to delve into the world of ALL TIME TOP FIVE lists. It is a pretty much epic game that is played in one form or another when getting to know a new friend/group of people/significant other/potential significant other until you find out Savage Garden is in their ALL TIME TOP FIVE musical artists.

So come along my friends, it’ll be fun, and perhaps give you a better sense of who I am (although then we’d have to discuss whether or not we are defined by our likes and dislikes, but I digress…).

With the miserable failure of her Friedman-inspired policies staring her in the face like a scythe-wielding wraith, Maggie could have — should have, perhaps? — folded.

Regardless of what you think of Maggie Thatcher (and, having never lived further than 30mins drive from the South Wales valleys, you can guess my opinions), this move took balls. Big ‘uns…

O.K, O.K, this extravagant and preposterously-long-winded blog intro is to make sure that 99% of readers won’t read this lame admission: my balls are not as big as Lord Thatchers’.

I am performing the blogging-equivalent of when Russian ships turned around, miles short of the US blockade, in the Cuban Missile crisis. I concede defeat.

I should explain.

In creating this blog, I set out to deconstruct, in a technical yet accessible way, using a series of contemporary case-studies, why pop music ‘works’. Having played music from a very young age, and being reasonably classically-qualified to talk about it, I thought it would be a good thing to write about.

However, I realise now that my heart isn’t really in it.

At Cardiff school of journalism, we were today given a lecture by BRI head of blogging Adam Tinworth. I wont lie; it wasn’t very engaging. Mostly, it regurgitated the ‘blogs-are-essential-but-the-media-is-on-its-arse-so-we’re-all-bricking-it-a-bit-this-end’ mantra that we’ve heard all too often. I was fairly unimpressed.

There was, however, one nipple of information which stuck in my head. He was adamant that we MUST be passionate about whatever we are blogging about. He said it also had to be of interest to the wider community.

I don’t think my blog fulfills either of these criteria.

Don’t get me wrong, I LIKE pop. I can tell you why a particular chord sequence are harmonic interval evokes a certain feeling or listener-response. But it isn’t my passion. Similiarly, while people may be interested in why pop is such a scientific beast, no doubt once they’ve heard one case study, they won’t want to hear another.

That is why, starting with my next post, I will blog about my true passion. Independent music.

It’s hardly niche (a prerequisite of our individual topics at JOMEC), but it is something which I immerse myself in far more than the average listener. I truly think I will be adding more to the general forum by journaling my two-hour-long trawls through the underground music sites which have become regular ports-of-call of mine.

I have an iTunes, the size of which would make Mark Lamar blush, and I think imparting some of this esoteric knowledge has much more chance of garnering an audience than talking about the joys of the chord E minor7.

Of course it wont be news to everyone, but I will see each blog as a widely-distributed mixtape of info. Ergo, I am hoping that I will both be able to inform and be informed.

Job done. Discovered a few dodgy worship CDs, a couple of dodgier U2 CDs and a few gaps in my collection but I had a great time.

I did have a crisis of confidence beforehand and wondered whether I should reorganise the albums by year of release but then remembered that I did this before and it requires instant recall of an albums original release date. This became annoying as soon as I had finished.

I also wondered whether I could organise it autobiographically like John Cusack in high fidelity. I tried explaining this to Vix and was met with glazed eyes.

So, boring won and I went alphabetical.

Anyways this great reorganisation meant that I rediscovered this small piece of fried gold.

นักเล่นแผ่นเสียงทุกคนปรารถนาที่จะตั้งหัวเข็มของตนกับโทนอาร์มสุดที่รักให้ได้แม่นยำที่สุดเท่าที่จำทำได้ ทว่าความฝันนี้มักฝันสลายเสมอเนื่องจากเครื่องมือในการตั้งหัวเข็มมักจะไม่สนองตอบกับความต้องการได้ทั้งหมด เนื่องจากผู้ผลิตเครื่องเล่นแผ่นเสียงแต่ละเจ้า แต่ละสังกัด แต่ละทวีปต่างคิดค้นระยะความยาวของโทนอาร์ ระยะการติดตั้งโทนอาร์มแตกต่างกันไป เอาเพียงความยาวโทนอาร์มที่ไม่เท่ากัน ความสูงของหัวเข็มที่ต่างกัน การตั้งหัวเข็มให้เที่ยงตรงด้วยเครื่องมือชิ้นเดียว แบบเดียวแทบจะเป็นไปไม่ได้เลย

ส่วนโปรแทรคเตอร์ที่ผมยังควานหา ทั้งข้อมูล และการใช้งานกับโทนอาร์ม ผมยังพบว่าโปรแทรคเตอร์แบบยูนิเวอร์แซลที่น่าสนใจอยู่อีหนึ่งตัวคือ Feickert Universal Protractor แต่เท่าที่ผมอ่านรีวิวและคู่มือของเจ้านี้ มันยังไม่สามารถใช้งานกับโทนอาร์มของเรก้าในแบบที่สมบูรณ์ และราคาของมันอยู่ที่ 250 $US ถามว่าแพงไหม แพงครับ แต่ถ้ามันใช้งานได้ดีผมคิดว่าคุ้มค่าแน่นอน เพราะโปรแทรคเตอร์มีความสำคัญมากสำหรับคนเล่นแผ่นเสียง

ในระหว่างที่ผมกำลังค้นหาข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับโปรแทรคเตอร์ตั้งหัวเข็ม บังเอิญผมไปพบกับโปรแทรคเตอร์ที่ประหลาดสุดตัวหนึ่งเข้า มันคือ Mint Best Tractor (MBT) Mint Best Tractor ถือกำเนิดโดยชาวฮ่องกงนาม Mr.Yip ผมไม่รู้อะไรเกี่ยวกับนายยิปคนนี้มากนัก นอกจากข้อมูลในเวบไซต์ของเขามีข้อมมูลเกี่ยวกับโปรแทรคเตอร์เท่าที่จำเป็น แต่ก็ไม่มากนัก และนอกจากนั้นก็เป็นรีวิวจากผู้ที่นำไปใช้งานจำนวนหนึ่งจากทั่วโลก

นายยิปคนนี้เขาจะจัดทำโปรแทรคเตอร์สำหรับเครื่องเล่นแผ่นเสียงและโทนอาร์มของเราเท่านั้น ซึ่งหมายความว่า MBT ทำตามออร์เดอร์ของเรา ซึ่งผมคิดว่ามันเวิร์คมากถ้าเขาจะทำโปรแทรคเตอร์เฉพาะโทนอาร์มขึ้นมาได้จริง ๆ (ในใจผมคิดว่าถ้าบริษัทโทนอาร์มหรือเครื่องเล่นแผ่นเสียง แถมโปรแทรคเตอร์ที่ได้มาตรฐานสักอัน มันจะยอดเยี่ยมมากแค่ไหน)

เมื่อทราบข้อมูลแล้วผมจึงตัดสินใจสั่งซื้อโดยการเขียนอีเมล์ไปบอกเขา MBT จะจัดทำและส่งของเดือนหนึ่งสองงวด ยกเว้นโทนอาร์มที่มีคนนิยมสั่งอย่าง Rega, SME, VPI ฯลฯ จะมีอยู่ในสต๊อคแล้ว จัดส่งได้ทันทีภายในสามวัน ราคาค่าตัวของ MBT อยู่ที่ 110 $US โดยเราจะได้ โปรแทรคเตอร์ที่ทำจากกระจกหนึ่งอัน คู่มือ แว่นขยาย ราคานี้รวมค่าส่งเรียบร้อยแล้ว

ถามว่าราคา 110 $US แพงไหม แถมยังใช้ได้กับโทนอาร์มเดียว มานั่งนึกว่าถ้าอนาคตเราจะเปลี่ยนโทนอาร์มจะต้องสั่งซื้อใหม่ มันจะคุ้มหรือ ซึ่งจุดนี้ผมว่าการเปลี่ยนดทนอาร์มคงทำกันไม่บ่อยนัก โทนอาร์มที่ดีขึ้นราคาก็สูงตามไปด้วย และผมคิดว่าภายในสามสี่ปีนี้ผมคงไม่มีโอกาสเปลี่ยนโทนอาร์มแน่นอน ดังนั้นผมจึงตัดสินใจทดลองซื้อ MBT มาใช้ให้มันประจักษ์แจ้ง เพราะถ้ามันสามารถตั้งจุด Null Point จุดในได้อย่างดี ไม่ทำให้เสียงแทรคในของแผ่เสียงซ่าเบลอร์ได้ ผมว่ามันจะคุ้มยิ่งกว่าคุ้มเสียอีก

หลังจากศึกษาข้อมูลในเวบไซต์ของ MBT ผมจึงตัดสินใจร่วมหัวจมท้ายกับโปรแทรคเตอร์เจ้านี้

I’m no hipster.

I wish I had more indie cred. I enjoy indie movies, but I don’t know anything about indie music and, as all hipsters and aspiring hipsters know, music is the heartbeat of the indie scene.

Well, I recently had an amazing musical experience that might also have been my initiation into independence.

And of course it happened at Fingerprints.

Fingerprints is an independent record store. And when I say “record,” I mean “record” – they boast a fine collection of vinyl on top of an excellent stock of regular CDs (mostly for indie newbies like me). It’s a smallish place with a hippish vibe worthy of comparison to Championship Vinyl (if you’ve never seen High Fidelity, go and rent it. IMMEDIATELY).

The owner may not be as hot as John Cusack (no offense, dude), but he could certainly go head-to-head with Rob Gordon in a “Top Five” challenge. He always has two fingers firmly on the pulse of the indie scene and he’s a master at keeping the store up-to-date and relevant.

But my favorite thing about Fingerprints has to be the in-stores.

Fingerprints will occasionally invite indie artists to play a show in their store. They’ll shut down for the night (or the afternoon, if the in-store is on a Sunday) and anyone who buys the artist’s CD (usually about $12-$13) gets free entry for himself and a friend.

Space is limited, so the shows are always intimate. And the artists are unlimited, so the shows are always amazing.

Sure, they’ve featured known artists like Ingrid Michaelson and, more recently, The Swell Season. But they’re also committed to supporting local indie artists. They know that this helps them as well as the artist. And it certainly doesn’t harm the fans who come to see the shows.

If you’re a budding hipster, then I’d highly recommend that you check out Fingerprints. Not only will they give you a quality indie education, but they’ll ease your transition to the road less traveled – and have you dancing down it to the beat of a different drummer.

Fremont Chic review
It’s appropriate that Nine N Out title their CD Fremont Chic: This second CD seems rooted in the kind of lasting influences people associate as classic Seattle music: garage-based rock, catchy lyrics, a driving beat, and guitar solos galore. Fronted by a powerful female vocalist, this also hints at new wave, at least the kind I associate with Blondie, or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Like Fremont, this CD straddles both the funky past, and a more chic and modern future….

This five-piece ensemble is a flat out refreshing change to much of Seattle’s washed out indie dribble. Huge sound, big hooks and get-off-your-ass-and-dance-or-we’ll-kill-you rhythms make a Nine ‘n Out show the best cardio aerobic workout you can get this side of a Billy Blank video. JCB says two thumbs up for Slim’s Last Chance and for Nine ‘n Out’s audio Redbull show. Ciao friends, live well. -Jason Childs September 2008

I was reading some stuff about the London Film Festival, when I noticed these pictures of a beautifully styled movie. The movie’s set in one of my favorite periods, the early sixties, so that explains the beautiful dresses, suits and interiors. The film is getting excellent reviews, not very surprising, because Nick Hornby (he also wrote one of my favorite movies, High Fidelity) has written the screenplay.

The story is about a bright 16-year-old schoolgirl named Jenny (played by Carey Mulligan). Bored with her own smalltown life, she dreams of a glamorous, Gauloise-scented existence as she sings along to Juliette Greco in her bedroom. She’s a brilliant student, plays chello and her parents want her to study in the future at Oxford University. One rainy day, she meets 30-ish David (Peter Sarsgaard), who offers her a lift on her way home from music practise. David introduces Jenny to a glittering new world of classical concerts and late-night suppers with his attractive friend and business partner, Danny (Dominic Cooper) and Danny’s girlfriend, the beautiful but not very bright Helen (Rosamund Pike). David replaces Jenny’s traditional education with his own version, picking her up from school and whisking her off to art auctions and smoky clubs. Much to Jenny’s amazement, David even manages to charm her conservative parents, despite being nearly twice her age. Their romance flourishes, and David whisks Jenny away to Paris for her seventeenth birthday under the pretence of being chaperoned by his “Aunt Helen.” Upon her return home, Jenny is the subject of intense scandal as her headmistress (Emma Thompson) and English teacher (Olivia Williams) accuse her of throwing away her future. Will David be the making of Jenny or her undoing?

Based on journalist Lynn Barber’s real-life experience as recounted in her book An Education, the film won the Audience Award for best film at the Sundance Film Festival and had tremendous acclaim at the Berlin Film Festival too. It will be released in the UK in October 2009. Unfortunately no information about when the movie will be released in the Netherlands.
