High Five Winners

Nate Bellegarde is cool beans comics artist drawing cool stuff. He’s a got a sweet-buns (I say “buns” because you can’t actually  write the word “ass” on the Internet) sketch blog where he very actively posts concept sketches for his Image Comics series such as Hector Plasm and Invincible presents: Atom Eve and Rex Splode. He also drew this image of Scott Pilgrim and Superman high-fiving and it’s actually the sole reason  for the existence of this post.

Tonight begins what could be the toughest two weeks of the Tar Heels’ season. The defending champs are taking on the team they ousted for the title just eight months ago. The headlines back on that glorious April day: “A Legacy Fulfilled” – DTH and “High Five” – Durham Herald Sun, among others.

The headlines might be a little different tomorrow as the Spartans are the favorites favored about equally tonight, but the test could prove to be a turning point for the Heels. Win or lose, I can’t see the impact of tonight’s result being negative. A win could start a wave of confidence that helps the Heels plow through December. A loss would identify the main weaknesses in a young team, preparing them for their other Top 10 match-ups this month and getting them ready for the ACC season.

Some think we’ll win, others think we’ll lose. (No link for the lose crowd. After all, who actually picks the Heels to lose?)

BTW that was the first time I’ve ever used the term “we” when talking about Carolina on this blog. I’ve tried staying away from it, but c’mon. You know you say it, too.

Here’s a Rafters-worthy prediction:

The Heels bigs hassle the tiny Spartans side-to-side and up and down the court. MSU shoots a horrible percentage while Big Z, Easy Ed and damn-he-needs-a-sweet-nickname Deon Thompson corral the boards and teasingly hold the ball above their heads. John Henson, who is also in need of a sick nombre, will have a breakout game and play 20 minutes, scoring 20 points. LD will teach Kalin Lucas to respect the wood — as Lucas will be on the floor after his ankles get broken so many times — and UNC will win by 15.

Virtual High Five goes out to my Sailor Man who passed his final exam for Naval Nuclear Power school today. He is now qualified to operate parts of nuclear reactors. IMpressive.

Un peu trop bas, un peu trop «fin»…

La diplomatie exige sans doute le respect des us et coutumes locales mais cela pose évidemment certains problèmes lorsque celles-ci ont un exotisme quelque peu «shocking».

Le Capitaine Lemuel Gulliver a rapporté que dans un certain Royaume, la manière de saluer le Monarque consistait à avoir l’honneur de lécher la poussière saupoudrée devant les Pieds du Souverain à la suite de quoi, le visiteur pouvait, la bouche pleine de la Royale Poussière, formuler son humble requête (pour les fâcheux, un peu de poison était ajouté à la dite poussière).

De son côté Alain Peyrefitte dans «L’Empire immobile ou le choc des mondes» rapporte les avanies de la mission britannique de Mr. Mccartney en Chine (à l’époque de la révolution française) alors que les ambassadeurs de l’Empire Britannique devaient choisir entre l’échec de leur mission ou la pratique du Kotow, salutation exigée par les Rites de la Cour Céleste pour saluer correctement le Fils du Ciel.

La salutation en question consistait simplement à se mettre à genoux et à frapper son front à trois reprise sur le sol et à répéter Très Humblement l’opération par trois fois.

Mr. Mccartney et ses adjoints ont tenté par différentes contorsions linguistiques, d’argumentations fallacieuses et d’acrobaties intellectuelles de trouver un prétexte leur permettant d’éviter le Kotow sans offenser le Fils du Ciel mais en vain: les “hommes aux longs nez” devaient se soumettre aux Rites Impériaux comme n’importe lequel des envoyés des tribus barbares en marge de l’Empire du Milieu. Après de multiples rebuffades, la mission britannique échoua lamentablement.

N’oublions pas, puisque nous parlons du Japon, que la photographie du général Douglas McArthur avec l’Empereur Showa Hiro-Hito avait été jugée fort choquante alors que Sa Majesté Impériale, vêtue d’un Haut-de-forme et d’un Tuxedo (un “Dinner Jacket” en anglais britannique: ne pas confondre avec un “Spencer” beaucoup moins chic!) fut reçue par McArthur vêtu de l’uniforme kaki habituel plutôt qu’en Grand Uniforme chamarré.

L’épouse de McArthur, cachée derrière un rideau lors de cette première entrevue suite à la défaite calamiteuse du Japon en 1945, avait remarquée que le Mikado avait salué son époux “comme l’aurait fait un domestique”… Il est vrai que les circonstances étaient quelque peu insolites. (Voir Edward Behr, “Hiro-Hito, l’empereur ambigu”).

En ce qui concerne la salutation du POTUS (President Of The United States) à l’endroit du NIN (Nabot Impérial Nippon), j’estime que la profonde courbette présidentielle fut quelque peu exagérée et m’amène à penser que le Président est mal conseillé par le service du protocole.

À Notre Toujours Très Humble Avis, les responsables du protocole de part et d’autre n’auraient ils pas été mieux avisés de mettre un peu d’eau dans leur saké (ou leur Coca Cola) et en arriver à un compromis honorable évitant ainsi à chacun de perdre la face?

Une harmonieuse combinaison du Salut Nippon et du High Five par exemple?

For all you travelers out there who happen to be driving through Cordova TN and need some kind of auto services I highly recommend looking at going to the Gateway Tire & service Center on Macon Road in Cordova.  Click here for the web link.

  Last week my I stopped to buy some groceries at Schnucks on Germantown Road and when I attempted to start my car it would not start.  I called a local friend and after he messed around he suggested we go over to Gateway, which we did.  I discussed my car problem with Michael and asked if he had a towing service he would recommend and he gave me a name.  I called the towing service and because Gateway was closed by the time the tow truck came, they towed my car over to Gateway and dropped my keys in the night box.

  The first thing the next morning Gateway called and we discussed my problem and they said they would check several options.  They promptly called back and by the end of the day I picked up mu car and was on my way.  I must say that this entire experience was handled professionally and I was very impressed with the folks at Gateway.

  So if your traveling on the highways and byways that go through Cordova TN and need some auto assistance, give Gateway a call for your needs

  I have nothing more to say except “Thanks you guys at Gateway!”

Congratulations to seminary student Jewel Davis, the grand prize winner of the contest created in honor of Theological Libraries Month! Jewel won a $25 gift certificate to the bookstore. Runners up were fellow seminarians Russ Williams and Penny McPhaul.  Russ and Penny sure do look happy with their prizes!

Prizes were awarded at the Seminary’s Fellowship Dinner held in the library last evening. The event was the culmination of Theological Libraries Month. Thanks to everyone who entered the contest and everyone who attended the dinner. A good time was had by all! Such a good time, in fact, that the a write-up of the event, with a few pictures, is now on the American Theological Library Association site!

It isn’t too hard to successfully pull off a handshake or fist bump, but executing a crisp high five is another matter. Not only can hand-eye coordination fail, leaving high fivers swatting at air, but if you don’t slap hands at just the right spot, the auditory effect is lackluster. I, for one, have fallen prey to such pitiful high fives in the past – that is, until my brother-in-law passed along an invaluable tip for making a sharp, satisfying high five every time.

Most high fivers pay too much attention to their hands, when, in fact, they should keep an eye on the elbows. To never miss a high five, look at the other person’s elbow as you go in for the slap instead of staring at their hand. I searched around fruitlessly for a scientific explanation to this trick but can tell you from experience that the results are impressively accurate (unless you’re practicing this tip with someone who intentionally misses to skew the outcome…). Not only will you make solid contact with the other person’s hand, but that glorious high five sound will also echo far and wide, heralding the message of your joint jubilation.

Now, high five tips might seem like the lowest common denominator of how-to advice, but the celebratory gesture’s origin is surprisingly interesting. For one thing, the high five has only been in use since the late 1970s, and sources disagree about who invented it.

According to Slate and The Phrase Finder, basketball player Derek Smith performed the first official high five in 1980. The University of Louisville forward supposedly devised it with his teammates during their bid for the NCAA championship. Others attribute the high five to former LA Dodger Glenn Burke, who allegedly used it to congratulate a teammate who hit a home run in 1977. National High Five Day, on the other hand, credits Kentuckian Monts Sleets. As a toddler, Sleets purportedly high fived his father’s military friends who referred to themselves as “The Five.”

Like raising the roof, bumping chests and performing a tomahawk chop, there’s a time and a place for high fiving. And now, when those perfect opportunities come along, you can make the mark every time. Just try it and see.

Aujourd’hui, je ne fais plus l’amour avec un cochon d’inde (fort heureusement me diront certain) mais  je débat bel et bien avec un Zèbre nicaraguayen issu d’une famille de coq départementaliste de la condition du bourbon en namibie. (Je n’ai aucune idée de ce que cela peut bien être …). Un débat fort intéressant, mais là n’est pas le sujet d’aujourd’hui.

Aujourd’hui, je vais faire un lien vers un site bouh caca pas beau, d’où la patate géante submentionnée provient. Oui, et ce n’est qu’un bref aperçu de ce qui vous attend, bande de pangolins mal cuits. Des choses horribles, monstrueuses (et je ne suis absolument pas responsable si vous tombez sur des images pornos, vous voila prévenu !) sont au menu. Bon, je le conçois, les trois quarts, c’est des trucs pornos, mais si vous êtes sensible à l’humour de merde et bien gras, ça devrait le faire, théoriquement (je nuance fortement mes propos, parce que là, c’est vraiment le top du top).
