Hi, and welcome to VoxScrapBox. Thank you for visiting! As you can see, we’re just getting started, for our Grand Opening post I have some CU/PU freebie graphics plus a couple new items and highlighted resources and cool products for designers, Zazzle & Cafepress shopkeepers and “content providers”,  Scrap booking, print making, card making, art etc. In an effort to bust the recession I’ve decided to build this site to offer lots of helpful goodies and tools for artists everywhere, so be sure to keep tabs, you’ll be glad you did!

What, exactly, does someone mean by, ‘provide me with a high resolution image’? I was asked this via email this morning by a person who specializes in videography which doesn’t get into pixel dimensions as a photographer does. If you’ve also wondered about the high res question, let me share my answer with you too.

You snap a digital picture and bring it into your computer. To determine what the resolution is, open it up in Photoshop (if you use a different editing system, look for find similar tools). go to Image – File Size. That brings you to a print screen like this:

Usually, digital images open with a 72dpi resolution and large dimensions

High resolution traditionally means 271 dots per inch. Just about everyone rounds that to an easy to remember 300 dpi. Printing requires high resolution for best results. Less dpi can produce grainy results. More dpi only creates a larger file size. Web resolution is entirely different. That relies on pixel dimensions which are the dimensions in the upper part of the dialog box we are looking at. Two entirely different types of measurements.

Changing the resolution number to 300 adjusts the dimensions.

So, all you do is change that 72 resolution (dpi) to 300 resolution (dpi). Watch the measurements. They should shrink in proportion to your increasing the dpi. If they don’t change, simply check the ‘resample image’ box below. Save the image. In reality, the image, direct from a digital camera set to one of its larger settings, is already high resolution.
