Min iPod blev stulen på tunnelbanan för några veckor sedan. Spasmer orsakade av brist på musik i vardagen blir bara värre och värre och nu känner jag att jag måste köpa en ny iPod! Så jag funderar kring mina valmöjligheter!

My  iPod was stolen on the subway some weeks ago. My spastic attacks caused by lack of music are heavily increasing and I felt earlier that it is now time to do something about it and buy a new iPod! So I’m looking over my options..

O ano está chegando a termo, é época de retrospectivas, balanços – e listas como a que a revista TIME fez, das melhores invenções de 2009. Selecionamos as que mais tocam o universo da arquitetura.

01. O microorganismo elétrico

Bactérias sempre tiveram má fama – mas deveríamos agradecer a uma delas, a talentosa Geobacter, que, com suas finíssimas extensões (os pili) gera eletricidade a partir de lodo e água suja. O professor Derek Lovley e sua equipe, da Universidade de Massachusets em Amherst, nos EUA, desenvolveram uma cepa (uma variação) da Geobacter que é oito vezes mais eficiente na produção energética. O próximo passo: criar células de geração de eletricidade a partir de tais microorganismos – uma energia limpa e barata. Vejam mais na página do Geobacter Project.

02. A parede viva

Parte jardineiro, parte botânico, o francês Patrick Blanc especializou-se em jardins verticais: adições verticais em prédios comerciais, shopping centers, museus e espaços públicos mundo afora. Sua última criação foi a fachada recoberta do Hotel Athenaeum, na qual 260 espécies de plantas (um total de mais de 12.000 espécimes) formam uma floresta vertical, erguendo-se por oito andares no elegante distrito de Mayfair, em Londres. O sistema baseia-se em irrigação e fertilização automatizadas, numa base de feltro e no correto posicionamento de cada espécime.

03. O ventilador sem pás

Inovar no básico sempre é um desafio – e foi isso que o designer britânico James Dyson conseguiu, ao eliminar as desconfortáveis (acumulam e espalham sujeira, sendo por vezes perigosas) pás dos ventiladores. O ar é sugado pela base, num sistema inspirado nos jatos de aviões, e discretamente impulsionado a uma estrutura circular com abertura de 1,3mm – proporcionando uma brisa mais agradável que os atuais ventiladores. Outras invenções de Dyson são um aspirador de pó (que lhe rendeu fama) e um impressionante secador de mãos para banheiros públicos, mais econômico e eficiente (a ideia original que levou ao ventilador).

04. Planetary Skin

O que acontece ao planeta quando uma floresta é queimada ou quando o consumo energético aumenta? Não sabemos ao certo, pois os dados sobre o meio ambiente são coletados individualmente, o que não possibilita a visão do todo (pois o todo é complexo, não corresponde simplesmente à união de suas partes). Levando-se em consideração que não se pode administrar o que não se pode avaliar, a NASA e a Cisco uniram-se para desenvolver o projeto “Planetary Skin”, um “sistema nervoso” global, que integrará sensores aéreos, terrestres e marítimos (e espaciais, também), ajudando os setores público e privado a tomarem decisões de acordo com as mudanças climáticas. O projeto piloto inicia suas atividades em 2010.

05. A telha solar

A Companhia Química Dow desenvolveu uma nova telha que funciona como painel de captação de energia solar. As telhas, que possuem sistema de instalação adaptado ao das telhas de asfalto tradicionalmente usadas (nos EUA, não no Brasil), usam camadas finas – e de baixo custo – de um composto de cobre, índio, gálio e selênio. A empresa pretende investir cerca de US$10 milhões nessa tecnologia na próxima década, prometendo ser este sistema 10 a 15% mais barato que os concorrentes – e mais barato e rápido para instalar. Dentre outras coisas, a arquitetura contemporânea provavelmente diminuirá a atual separação dos elementos arquitetônicos, que passarão a ser opções funcionais interligadas na mesma teia que será a edificação. Um exemplo é a pesquisa -encabeçada por arquitetos – em painéis fotovoltaicos incorporados às fachadas.

Um grupo de cientistas do Instituto Politécnico Rensselaer (RPI), nos EUA, desenvolveu um novo e mais eficiente modelo de captura de energia solar – desta vez, permitindo sua utilização ostensivamente em edificações. Através de um sistema de lentes, a luz solar é transformada em eletricidade, e o calor é convertido em água quente.

Trata-se, surpreendentemente, de um trabalho realizado por um grupo de arquitetos, que fundaram a empresa de pesquisa interdisciplinar Materialab, no Instituto Politécnico Rensselaer. O trabalho envolve também engenheiros mecânicos (os desenvolvedores do sistema, enfim) e estudantes de graduação, numa equipe que varia de dez a trinta integrantes ao longo do ano. Isso sem citar o físico de Harvard, Peter Stark, que está desenvolvendo as lentes Fresnel que concentram a luz solar.

O conjunto de lentes gira ao longo do dia, de forma a posicionarem-se perpendicularmente aos raios do sol, aumentando ainda mais sua eficiência. Eficiência, aliás, garantida pela utilização de um painel solar minúsculo desenvolvido no projeto, sobre o qual converge a iluminação captada. Trata-se de um modelo não baseado em silício, como os paineis atuais (e enormes), mas em arseneto de gálio, uma tecnologia desenvolvida pela NASA.

“Em um prédio, todos os sistemas são interdependentes”, explica Anna Dyson, fundadora do consórcio Materialab e diretora do projeto. “Ainda assim, são desenvolvidos separadamente. Em nossa cultura de pesquisa altamente especializada, visualizar a relação entre todas essas tecnologias é crucial, e é este o papel de um arquiteto”.

O resultado, que já está sendo chamado de “fachada solar”, é um sistema de manutenção simples e barata (uma vez que fica protegido por janelas de vidro) e que reduz eficientemente o consumo energético das edificações, sendo inclusive o retorno mais rápido que em comparação com os atuais sistemas de paineis solares.

O projeto é financiado pelo Departamento de Energia dos EUA, pela Autoridade Estatal de Desenvolvimento e Pesquisa em energia de NY, bem como pela Fundação pela Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação do estado de NY.

Ne mélangeons pas les torchons et les serviettes, ou plutôt le carbone et le silicone ! A GQ, nous sommes très à cheval sur le style, et les ordinateurs rebadgés par une célèbre marque de voiture de sport sont donc définitivement proscrits. Ce concept vient d’être élu officiellement comme la meilleure fausse bonne idée de l’année. La preuve par trois.

Acer sort son notebook Ferrari-One F200. La coque de l’écran 11,6 pouces peinte en rouge arbore l’écusson de la marque. 450 euros, c’est très abordable pour une Ferrari, mais un peu cher pour un notebook.

Même constat avec l’Asus Lamborghini 2S, un ordinateur plus puissant et même plus chic avec sa version premium en carbone. Mais tout de même facturé 2800 euros.

Encore plus chic, l’ordinateur Bentley recouvert de cuir surpiqué façon siège baquet et fabriqué par le designer néerlandais Ego. Seul problème à part son prix (12 000 eur) : on dirait vraiment un sac à main pour dames.

ReadWriteWeb is a must-read blog for many people interested in social media, and its coverage of corporate adoption of Web 2.o is excellent for those looking at its use in business (so-called Enterprise 2.0). Today, I read a post, Enterprise 2.0: Study Shows Adoption is Real, by Alex Williams that reported survey data from the 2.0 Adoption Council revealing social media adoption in some of the world’s largest organisations.

It shows, unsurprisingly, that high tech companies are leading the way in uses of Enterprise 2.0 technologies, although most are still at the ‘early adopter’ stage, with manufacturing businesses also bringing social computing into the work of their employees (post). But adoption by engineering/construction organisations apparently lags a long way behind.

It looks depressing, but I figure this probably has a lot to do with the small size of the Council’s sample – probably only one AEC firm figured in the survey, so the snapshot is little more than anecdotal as far as construction organisations are concerned. But even if the sample was extended to encompass more AEC businesses, I expect the industry would still be seen as lagging behind, not least because many firms actively block social networking by their employees (a recurring topic in this blog – see Why social media bans won’t work, for example), and have people, systems and processes that are often almost anti-collaborative (Not Invented Here).

No futuro, as estradas de concreto serão capazes de determinar a velovidade dos veículos, seu peso e mesmo seu estado de conservação. Mantidos pela Fundação Nacional da Ciência, nos EUA, pesquisadores da Universidade de Minnesota Duluth lançaram o conceito e publicaram os primeiros resultados no periódico Nanotechnology.

Para fabricar o concreto, são adicionados nanotubos de carbono piezoresistentes ao cimento. O resultado é uma mistura extremamente sensível à compressão, o que gera a expectativa de seu uso para monitoramento de veículos em estradas – e, também, para monitorar o desgaste natural de pontes e outras estruturas.

A palavra da vez é inteligência: aliando-se materiais de ponta (que conferem a edificações capacidades como esta, de se monitorar, ou como já relatado em outro post, se autorregenar) ao sistema de monitoramento inteligente de tráfego, espera-se obter uma relação mais vantajosa entre o custo e a vida média das estruturas de concreto.

Concluindo, os atuais sistemas de monitoramento seriam substituídos por um que requeira menos manutenção. O estudo, ainda em fase conceitual e de protótipo, é desenvolvido pelo professor Xun Yu (foto), da Universidade de Minnesota Duluth.

En attendant le prochain évènement parisien, c’est l’intervention de Tim O’Reilly, un des gourous du net, qui interpelle. Dans un article paru sur son blog, il parle sans détour du danger de concentration qui guette le web du futur. La guerre du net, c’est pour demain!

If you were to judge by the reporting of the international media, Jerusalem today is a city waiting to explode.

The Israeli government is accused of building on Palestinian land in Gilo. Actually Gilo is a full suburb of Jerusalem with over 30,000 residents, and the Jerusalem Municipal Planning Committee has also granted permits for 5,000 new apartments to be built for Palestinians in the east of the city.

In parallel, thousands of ultra-orthodox Jews have been demonstrating violently against the opening on the Sabbath of the local Intel factory.

The fact is that commercially, Jerusalem is one on the most important facets of Israel’s hightech community. And this statement does not just rest on Intel’s existing complex in the city. For example, this coming week, the corner-stone of a new IDPj factoy will be laid, which will employ a further 200 locals.

According to the BioJerusalem website, “nearly half of the biotech research and half of the medical research in Israel is conducted in Jerusalem at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and its affiliate Hadassah Medical Center”. In fact, down the road from Intel, a new nanotech centre is being completed.

Israel’s capital city hosts many of the world’s leaders in solar energy. LUZ began its history in Jerusalem. GSE has created a new technology for solar panels. Leviathan (wind energy) and Cequesta (water treatment) lead the way in other aspects of the alternative energy business.

Jerusalem has an amazing biblical and modern history. If left to the ill of extrmists or the simplistic writings of journalist meeting deadlines, the true successes of the city will be lost to the world.

The credit crisis sucks, especially because it minimized the probability that you can get away with getting investment banks and venture capital to underwrite essential purchases like the new Guitar Hero and kegs from Gordon Biersch. Luckily that might all be ending soon. Recently, movements in private equity and venture capital have started to show some indications that the most glamorous of Silicon Valley capital fountains has started to thaw. The cracks in the ice are undoubtedly motivated by the increasing demand for cleantech, technology designed to provide equal parts personal utility and environmental utility. But even if the opening shots are in the name of the environment, any sort of momentum to turn on the funding-hose will undoubtedly lead to watering the gardens of Silicon Valley with much-needed capital to thirsty startups and major enterprises looking to buy slick and undervalued intellectual property through M&A.

So yeah, there probably is another boom coming. But things feel a little different this time around. I moved to California in 1999, right as the major dot-com boom went from a quaint idea to a startling reality. My dad and stepmom ran a dot-com called Timesharevalues.com, a surprisingly resilient vacation real estate company that teamed up with eBay in their early years to sell vacation properties over the internet. Right before the boom took off (when both of them were transitioning from their jobs at other tech companies) it felt, well, crazy. Money for firms that had a relatively good idea was in such abundance after Excite and Yahoo! took off that it was literally impossible not to get funding if your idea wasn’t completely absurd and you knew how to use Powerpoint. Even then, the VC’s would sometimes come after you. My parents smartly decided not to take VC funding, but that didn’t stop the phone calls. Eventually we had to get another line and a secretary to deal with them and all of the other communication stuff (which was weird as hell by the way – coming out of my room half-dressed for breakfast during winter break and pretending to ignore some lady who’s working in your living room is always a surreal experience).  It was downright simple to start a startup, and clearly nothing could go wrong.

Nowadays, VC money is still hard as hell to get. Getting an appointment to pitch at Kleiner-Perkins probably requires a blood sacrifice. The credit crunch hasn’t just strained the budgets of the Sand Hill investors, it’s also taught them temperance. Recent history is filled with good ideas that go bad because of poor planning. And there’s cultural changes in the Valley too. The Millennials are starting to flood into technology, changing not just how we party but also how we compete and do business. The next boom, while a familiar thing to Silicon Valley, feels very, very different.

Here’s three of the big differences I see:

• It’s not about IPO: When you were a startup back in the day the IPO was the glorious “fuck-yeah” moment for everyone that got in before the cut. The glamorous millionaire lifestyle of Silicon Valley startups was predicated on the cash you’d get with your Initial Public Offering, and the young Gen-Xers that ruled the smallest and most disruptive startups were looking to IPO. That’s a lot different now.

  It’s unlikely that the posterchilds of the new boom will IPO anytime soon. Neither Facebook or Twitter seem jazzed to IPO anytime soon, and I don’t think it’s just because the stock market sucks. Call me crazy, but I think a lot of it is based around generational psychology and sociology. To IPO is to yield control of your company to investors. We Millennials are a surprisingly difficult bunch to manage because we’re fiercely down with doing it our way. Having to listen to VC’s is bad enough; having a board of directors who “don’t get it” about tech and order you around seems extremely non-ideal. To sell out in an IPO has the potential to ruin all of the hard work you’ve done by leaving it all to someone else.

• You need a college degree: Being a sysadmin (system administrator) was a pretty glamorous job back in the day. Being on near-constant beeper-duty and having the potential of working like an investment banker if stuff broke sucked, but so long as you knew what you were doing you could be paid a lot of money without having to spend four years of your life whining about how your GE courses are taking time away from your major classes. With a bunch of certifications in your hand and some skill in technical interviewing you could talk your way into Yahoo! pretty well.

  This is not the case anymore. While the bachelors-less savants are still around, it’s a hell of a lot harder to sneak into these high paying administration jobs (when they even exist). Globalization and gains from specialization are partly to blame here. Paying a sysadmin in the United States, much less in California, is an extremely expensive endeavor. Outsourcing such duties to other states or other countries with less employment competition (which will raise wages ceteris paribus) and more lenient employment laws is more ideal. Coincidentally, in the US many of these states are also places where it’s cheap to build the data centers where admins are needed. Being in IT in the Valley now is becoming less about being a Reel Big Fish-loving data center junkie and more about being an extremely flexible strategic consultant. With the heavy lifting being outsourced, these new positions require all of the expertise and rigorous training that a Bachelors+ degree signifies.

  A college degree is important in another way too: prestige.  Silicon Valley is well-known for being a meritocracy, and where you’re from has largely not been an issue until the rise of Google. Google’s is very Ivy-minded, and there are more than a few urban legends out there about Sergei writing off capable employees because they studied at less prestigious state schools rather than the Ivies or Public Ivies. With the large amount of HR poaching,  many ex-Google HR staffers trained in this sort of prestige-minded filtering have spread throughout the ‘Valley and taken their prestige-minded ways of thinking and hiring with them.

• It’s not just about technology: Excite is a great case study on how being overly focused on “legit tech” may not be a good idea. When the internet portal first came out they were flooded with Venture funding. As one of the big incumbents in the Internet Portal business, Excite wielded stupid amounts of market power and could pretty much do what they wanted. But as the boom faaded and the bubble burst, it was clear that Excite was not making great business decisions. They invested heavily into something called Excite@Home, an early broadband ISP that they got in acquiring a cable modem company called @Home. This decision seemed to make sense at first: vertically integrate internet activity to ensure that you don’t stray far from the Excite brand when you’re online. It was also an opportunity to rapidly invest in new broadband opportunities – a factor that seemed more salient given the background of Excite’s board of directors.

  This turned out to be a very bad idea. First, Excite@Home posted a $61.6 million loss in its first quarter. Then the company, which existed as a subordinate entity of Excite proper, re-neged on a deal for auditing and ditched their accounting deal for a new relationship with PriceWaterhouseCooper. As a result, they incurred serious breech of contract legal wrath and were forced to hemmorage more money. All of these struggles hit home at Excite, and the company later joined some other great names in taking the long walk towards chapter 11 and obscurity.

  The valley seems to be learning its lesson with  this one. The death of the Wi-Max market is a great recent example of how cool technology can suffer without good business planning. Lots of big firms such as Time Warner and eBay have recently divested major purchases predicated on cool technology that didn’t fit well into their business plans, AOL and Skype respectively.  This also fits into a lot of the temperance you see with VC’s and gun-shy investment banking firms, both who seem to demand a higher amount of business planning and strategy from their prospects before investment. Basically, nobody wants to be like Excite or a Wi-Max firm.

Prenons les codes barres, par exemple, quoi de plus banale qu’un code barre, en effet ? On en trouve sur tous les produits, mais on ne les remarque même pas, car ils ne sont ni attrayants ni compréhensibles à nos yeux, juste une suite de nombres, sous une suite de barres plus ou moins fines ou épaisses.

Mais voilà, au Japon, ils ont eu cette brillante idée : Customiser les codes barres ! Chez nous, c’est à peine si l’on customise nos vêtements, là-bas, ils customisent les codes barres et le résultat est plutôt surprenant ! Intégrer le branding dans le code-barre pour qu’il ne soit plus ce petit îlot de chiffres et de barres isolé dans un recoin oublié de l’emballage, à quand chez nous ?

Ils ont même placé la barre un peu plus haut (si je puis me permettre) avec la création du code QR, un code barre beaucoup plus puissant et très customisé lui aussi ! L’image sur la droite semble tout droit sortie d’un manga et pourtant c’est un code barre pour Louis Vuitton,  qui renferme l’adresse url du site de la marque. Pour la découvrir, il suffit “simplement” de posséder un portable capable de lire ces codes barres (ce qui est monnaie courrante au Japon).

Ceci nous prouve une fois encore, que non seulement les japonais sont des artistes hors paire,  mais qu’ils ont également bien plus qu’une longueur d’avance sur nous en matière de nouvelles technologies !

Superfícies Metálicas

A empresa canadense QMAAS desenvolveu, através de processos simples de corte (que admite muitas variações), chegando a superfícies cujo aspecto muda de acordo com a iluminação e com o ponto de vista do observador – gerando uma arquitetura com aspecto tridimensional que interage com o meio e com o usuário.

Tinta inteligente

Esta tinta, desenvolvida pela alemã Sto AG, neutraliza odores orgânicos como os do cigarro, da cozinha e de animais de estimação, graças a um catalisador (baseado em titânio) que quebra as moléculas dos odores, destruindo-as quando entram em contato com as paredes. Inspirado nas leves e cavas estruturas ósseas dos pássaros, esta folha de aço inoxidável é ao mesmo tempo leve e rígida. Desenvolvida pela Volvo Technology, na Suécia, este material consiste basicamente em duas folhas de aço ligadas entre si por uma rede de filamentos de aço (a camada intermediária é 95% ar) – resultando num produto com espessura de 1 a 2 mm e cerca de metade do peso das folhas de aço atualmente utilizadas! O material ainda pode curvar-se, adequando-se a formas variadas, e abrigar em seu interior elementos como sensores, instalações de aquecimento/resfriamento e cabos em geral que requeiram proteção. Mais um avanço advindo da biomimética.

NaviFloor

Este sistema de transponder via rádio, ou RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), foi desenvolvido pela empresa alemã Future-Shape e consiste em uma manta inteligente para pisos, tornando a edificação mais interativa. Não necessitando de fonte própria de carga, esses elementos são (ao menos por enquanto) incompatíveis com superfícies metálicas e condutivas em geral. Sua utilização imediata é localizar clientes em grandes lojas e supermercados, identificando seções preferidas e padrões de consumo… mas não é nada difícil imaginar a utilização em prédios corporativos e governamentais, como monitoramento de segurança.

Esta tecnologia consiste em uma lâmina de um polímero condutor com LEDs inseridos – gerando um material flexível, que dispensa fiação interna (o polímero já se encarrega de transmitir a eletricidade) e com várias aplicações possíveis em arquitetura. A empresa SUN-TEC Swiss United Technologies, detentora da patente, já desenvolveu uma folha de dimensões 1,25m x 3,5m – não há emissão de calor e a vida útil dos LEDs varia entre 40.000 e 80.000 horas, podendo ainda a superfície ser gerada sobre formas variáveis, adequadas a situações específicas.

Google zaprezentował swoje najnwosze dziecko – Google Chrome OS. Jak twierdzi Google, Chrome OS ma zupełnie przedefiniować to, w jaki sposób korzystamy z interentu. Bo właśnie tam – zdaniem giganta z Mount View – ma się przenieść całą nasza aktywnóść związana z korzystaniem z internetu. Zamiast korzystać z aplikacji zapisanych na komputerze, będziemy tworzyć i odtwarzać kontent zamieszczony w internecie . Ponieważ cały kontent znajdzie się w sieci, będzie dostępny z poziomu różnych urządzeń – komórki, komputera stacjonarnego, laptopa. W sumie Chrome OS to…bardziej rozbudowana przeglądarka, a sam system jest w stanie korzystać tylko z aplikacji webowych. Czy to będzie wygodne? Na pewno inne/ tak samo inne, jak Google Wave ma być nową inkarnacją e-maila.

Pierwsze komputery (dokładnie netbooki z napędami SSD) z preinstalowanym Chrome OS ma się pojawić na rynku w przyszłym roku. Co ciekawe, by korzystać z Chrome OS’a trzeba będzie raczej kupić urządzenie w niego wyposażóne – raczej nie będzie można samemu zastąpić nim Windowsa.
