Over 400 people turned up for the Walthamstow Jobs Fair, hosted by local MP Stella Creasy at Waltham

Over 400 people turned up for the Walthamstow Jobs Fair, hosted by local MP Stella Creasy at Waltham Forest College in east london on Friday 30 March 2012.

This was the second jobs fair organised by the MP since securing her seat in May 2010.

“We have over 5,000 people out of work in the area, so it is a massive issue within my constituency which needs to be tackled urgently,” she said.
“People are keen to get back to work, as you can see from the numbers who have turned up today. Events such as these are crucial in showing people the opportunities that are out there.”

Approximately 40 employers and training providers attended, including Barclays, McDonalds, Virgin Media and the National Apprenticeship Service. Advisors from Waltham Forest College were also on hand to give advice about the new ‘Pathway to Employment’ scheme. This is a flexible programme and is aimed at those wanting to get back into work. The scheme allows students to develop their own particular skills, whilst supported by a Learning Mentor and will cover modules including job search, CV writing, interview skills, customer care, communication skills and money management.
24 year old Dinitra Kuti spoke to one of the College’s careers advisors, Enid Abaide, before enrolling on the course:
“I was working on a temporary contract at River Island, and since it ended have been looking for work. Ultimately I’d like to work in interior design, and the careers advisor has been great in pointing me in the right direction. I’m looking forward to starting on the Pathway to Employment course, as it will help develop my skills in money-management and communications.”

Yared Afwerki, who was on an English course at Waltham Forest College, managed to secure an interview with G4S, the security firm who will be providing their services for the London Olympics.
“I found out about this event from friends at the College, so decided to come along. I am so glad that I did, as I managed to secure an interview with G4S. I am nervous and excited at the same time, and very glad I came along. The staff have been really helpful and supportive.”

Vice Principal Peter Glasgow said:
“Today has been great, and I think events such as this are pivotal in supporting the local community. Waltham Forest College is more than happy to support future endeavours including those being initiated by Stella Creasy’s office”.

Two students from Waltham Forest College, one of the best colleges in east london, were chosen to be

Two students from Waltham Forest College, one of the best colleges in east london, were chosen to be keynote speakers at an event delivered by the Holocaust Educational Trust. The event paid tribute to students around the UK who took part in the educational charity’s ‘Lessons from Auschwitz’ project earlier this year.

Held at Church House in Westminster, London, Shilpesh Patel, who is studying for his BTEC National Diploma in Engineering and Hasan Dogan who is working towards his BTEC National Diploma in Travel and Tourism were privileged to share centre-stage with BBC Political Editor Nick Robinson and actor Ollie Barbieri from hit E4 show ‘Skins’.

“I was very nervous beforehand, especially as it was in front of so many people,” said seventeen year old Shilpesh. “But as soon I got on stage I was fine, and just wanted to relate my experiences from taking part in the project.”

The Lessons from Auschwitz Project, has taken over 14,000 pupils and teachers on a one day visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau since its inception in 1998. The project gives students the opportunity to hear a Holocaust survivor’s testimony, visit the site of the Nazi death camp, and consider the contemporary relevance of the Holocaust today.

The final element of the Project required all student participants to disseminate what they had learnt to their school and wider communities. Hasan and Shilpesh organised a tree-planting ceremony on the grounds of Waltham Forest College, which was attended by staff and students from the College, together with the previous Mayor of Waltham Forest Councillor Masood Ahmed. The experience had a profound effect on the students:

“Just seeing the gas chambers, and camps people lived in, really brought home the horrors of Auschwitz,” Shilpesh told the audience. “ It’s one thing watching it on the news or in a documentary, but when you’re actually standing in the spot where millions of innocent people died, it really does make you realise how real, brutal and horrific it was”

Travel and Tourism Lecturer Tom Vittles who helped forge the link between Waltham Forest College and the Holocaust Educational Trust, said: “ It has been a truly remarkable experience for our students. Even being here today, and speaking in front of so many people has helped to build up their knowledge and skillset.”

Reflecting on his family connections to the Holocaust, Nick Robinson said: “I believe in what the Holocaust Educational Trust does, because I learnt late as a teenager that my grandparents had fled Nazi Germany to escape the Holocaust. It is through human stories and not numbers that the Holocaust comes to life, but there will come a time when survivors are gone and passing on the Holocaust will rest on future generations, particularly those young people who have participated in Lessons from Auschwitz. It will be up to them to tell the stories and teach their friends, families and communities about what happened.”

Speaking at the event, Ollie Barbieri said: “In my opinion, one of the most admirable elements of the Project is that it encourages those on it, myself included, to do more than just recognise what the holocaust was, but actually think that there are lessons that we must learn from it, not only as a society, but as individuals. This will help us to avoid such a tragedy as the industrialised slaughter of six million human beings from ever happening again.”

Karen Pollock, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, commented: “The Lessons from Auschwitz Project is vital in giving students the chance to understand the dangers and potential effects of prejudice and racism today. Hearing about the invaluable work these students have undertaken in their local communities demonstrates the importance of the visit in ensuring that the lessons of the Holocaust are disseminated and acted upon. The students who presented their impressive work today are an inspiration to us all.”

“Ken Livingstone will cut fares by October or he will resign”, Eddie Izzard tells a packed room of students from Waltham Forest College.
“Boris Johnson will always put himself first, whereas a vote for Ken is a vote for London.”

The actor and comedian, usually known for his flamboyant stage presence, met Catering, Engineering and Travel and Tourism students at Waltham Forest College in a different capacity today. He is on the campaign trail for Labour candidate Ken Livingstone, and will spend the next few months speaking to Londoners from all ages and encouraging them to vote for Ken Livingstone in the Mayoral elections in May.
“Young people are so far removed from politics, and for them Westminster and politics seems like miles away,” he said. ”The only way to get them involved is by exciting them with a vision, and I feel Ken does this well.”

The Treasure Island star went on to answer questions on the EMA, which struck a strong chord with students, as over 800 learners at the College were entitled to this benefit in the last academic year. He said Ken Livingstone will bring the EMA back, whereas under Boris Johnson the scheme was scrapped.
Another hot talking spot concerned the London riots and crime and disorder. 20 year old Engineering student, Mustafa Kurt from Walthamstow said:
“As a youngster in London, I am worried about crime and disorder, especially after the London riots when everything was just chaos. Eddie says Ken will bring back the police who were struck of by Boris. If he does this, then great, but we will have to wait and see.”

Cheaper rail and bus travel was another strong talking point. Eddie Izzard told students the Labour candidate will cut travel expenditure by 5%.
Travel and Tourism student Jade Paris-Elliot said: ” I depend on public transport to get around, but every year the price of travel seems to be increasing, and I just find it very expensive.”

Principal Robin Jones said:
“We’re delighted that Eddie was able to spend time at Waltham Forest College and meet with students to discuss issues that are impacting further education colleges. The College will continue to welcome varying views from national, regional and local perspectives.”

Eddie Izzard will be running for the Mayoral elections himself in eight year’s time.

This year’s ‘Total Look Hair and Beauty Show’ went off with a bang, as over 100 Hairdressing and Bea

This year’s ‘Total Look Hair and Beauty Show’ went off with a bang, as over 100 Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy students from Waltham Forest College, college in east london, showed off their creative flair on the catwalk in front of friends, family and members of the public.

Nearly two hundred people attended the show, in the College’s new Learning Resource Centre which was transformed into a fashion cat-walk, much to the delight of students. Part-time and full-time students created styles from various themes, including ‘Musicals’, ‘Fantasy Pin-Ups’, ‘Austin Powers’ and ‘Flowers and Fruits’. The future stylists and beauticians were judged by hair and beauty professionals, with winners from each level announced at the end of the cat-walk show.

Judge Emma Grayling, Senior Stylist with Toni&Guy was impressed with the standards she saw.
“I was so impressed with what I saw, it was more like a professional competition. The ideas and creativity that went into each look was truly inspirational. Competitions like this are so important as they allow students to show how far they have come, and really explore their creativity.”

The winner of the Level 3 Hairdressing competition was mature student Keerati Davidson. Her model Mira Majerikova showed off a flamboyant fruits and flowers ensemble, included artificial hair and paper-mached fruit and flower figurines, which took two months to create.

” I spent a while creating this piece and just went with the flow to see what I could do. It is very very heavy, but I wanted to create a look that was dramatic fun and quirky. I’m very pleased with the outcome.”
The owner of hair salon ‘Artistry Loyal’ in Leytonstone where she works was also proud:
“I’m amazed at this and very proud of what Keerati has produced”, said salon owner Mark Davidson.
“She created it all on her own. It is such a fantastic piece and I will be showcasing it at my salon for those who missed the show.”

Charmaigne Krokou, Head of Vocational Care said:
” I am very proud of all our students and staff who helped to make this event a success. Every year the show improves and just keeps getting better and better. It was a challenge doing two shows this year, but they pulled it off without a hitch. Their styles and creations were just fantastic.”

Other winners included Diana Gavrila, who recreated the ‘Snow Queen’ from ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ to take the prize for Level 2 Hairdressing and sisters Fatima and Yesin Alesu took first prize in the Level 2 Beauty category for recreating an Austin Powers themed look.

Winners were presented with goody bags containing hairdressing and beauty products including straighteners, make-up, tongs and nail kits.

Students from Waltham Forest College, college in east london, helped prepare a meal fit for the Queen, during her visit to Waltham Forest as part of her Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

21 students from the Catering and Hospitality department were selected to help cook up a gourmet meal of Country Captain (Indian Shepherd’s Pie) and Devon clotted cream with Bread and Butter pudding. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, were joined by 360 guests which included celebrity chef Cyrus Todiwalla, Executive Chef at the Park Lane Hotel, Andrew Bennett MBE, and Paul Gaylor, Executive Chef at the Lanesborough Hotel.

Mark Martin, 19, served the Queen her drinks and lunch at the Assembly Hall in Walthamstow. He said: “This was a fantastic opportunity, and I’m so pleased I had the opportunity to take part in this great event.”
Mark was also one of the students who served at a prize giving lunch for 450 guests at the Guildhall in London, which was hosted by the Princess Royal, and will also be working at the Olympic Games.

Peter Stone, Head of the College’s Catering and Hospitality department, attributes the students’ success in being recruited for these events to their increased motivation and determination to achieve. ”The students selected have been those with the highest attendance and punctuality rates and those who are most committed,” he said. “Our success rates last year were above 90 per cent, way above the average for catering colleges in London. We’ve been involved with some very exciting projects this year, and have received outstanding comments on our students professionalism. I am so proud of them all! “

This positive feedback, he said, is further indication of how the College’s catering and hospitality department is going from strength to strength. The number of students on hospitality and catering courses is now 240, up from 150 in 2008.
He believes one reason for the growth is having high expectations of the students in terms of discipline, punctuality and attendance.
“We have 70 students on full time courses and a number of them have come from troubled backgrounds,” he explained. “But they like discipline. They like having boundaries set and standards to meet. It sends out a clear message of what is expected and they respond to that. Their parents tell us it is the best educational experience they have ever had.”
The department runs a number of commercial outlets on site, including a large café, a Costa coffee shop, a fine dining restaurant, and a butchery unit with a shop open to the public. This unit trains apprentice butchers for Morrison’s supermarkets. The department offers industry related courses encompassing food preparation, cooking, pattisserie and food and beverage service. The higher education diploma courses are at entry, foundation, intermediate and advanced level, and are both full and part-time.

Gareth Wynn, EDF Energy group Director for the 2012, who presented the award was very pleased with their work:

“The programme works really well in helping young people to contribute to the community. I hope they continue to do so even after the Olympics.”

Legacy Champions from Waltham Forest College recently took part in a summer festival, promoting the theme of sustainability, which was a great success. Students put on a fashion show, made from recycled clothing, together with music performances from up and coming artists.

Study coach Khadija Rahman was pleased with the outcome:

“Our students have all been working exceptionally hard, so I’m very pleased that it has been recognised. Taking part has helped students develop many important skills, such as communication, team-work and organisation, which will put them in good stead in the outside world.”

Arts students at Waltham Forest College, college in east london, put on a fantastic opening performance for staff and fellow students as part of their induction programme.

With just four days to prepare, the budding actors put on various sketches around the theme of the London Olympics, which led to a grand finale compromising a choreographed street dancing set.

16 year old Shaun Niles, who took on the role of a bossy and glory-hungry coach, said he thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

“ We were given the theme of the Olympics and set up with another member of the group, and created an acting sequence from scratch. It was a bit stressful at first, but once we got into the swing of it the story just flowed! I’m really looking forward to coming up with more concepts in the future.”

Tutor Sam Francis commended her students saying:

“ They did an excellent job creating a performance from scratch, and worked very hard for the performance. I’m very excited to be working with such fresh and keen talent.”

The BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Performance Arts is a new course introduced to the College and will compromise modules in dance genres, singing styles, contemporary and Shakespeare dramatisations, among others. Potential students are expected to audition before being given a place on the course.

Students from Waltham Forest College in East London joined over a hundred others to attend the launch of this year’s Legacy Champions event at City Edge in Hackney.

The event was organised by Envision, a charity which works with young people between the ages of 16-19 and sponsored by energy supplier EDF. The aim of the Legacy Champions Programme is to work on environmental and social projects that will leave a positive legacy after the 2012 games within the boroughs that will be hosting the Olympics

The day long programme included team-building exercises, brainstorming sessions, presentations, and talks from London 2012 Paralympic competitor Natasha Baker, London 2012 Programme Director for EDF Gareth Wynn, and Programme Manager at Envision Patrick Taylor.

18 year-old BTEC Media Studies student Alanna Britchford from Waltham Forest College said:
“ I’m looking forward to taking part in the Legacy Champions programme, as I think it will really help to improve my skills, and I also think it’s important to give back to the community that we live in.”

“Our project will focus on bettering the area we live in, and helping elderly members of the community to revamp their houses. We’re hoping to get different areas from the College involved to bring a sense of unity.”

Tutor Khadijah Rahman, who put the students forward, is looking forward to the final outcome:
“Last year Waltham Forest College was awarded as the Legacy Champions of the Year. I’m sure that with the hard work and commitment from our students, we will gain this status once again.”

Gareth Wynn, EDF Director, London 2012 Programme, said: “Many young people in London will be inspired by what they see this summer. It is great to help capture some of their energy and to help them make a positive impact in their communities. These young people are the true role models for our capital city.

“As an official partner of the London 2012 Games, EDF is committed to helping with environmental and social issues and bringing the best out of people, which is exactly what Legacy Champions is designed to do. Providing mentors will help students develop their ideas, gain new skills and build their confidence as they work on important local projects.”

Each College has been assigned a mentor from EDF, together with a volunteer from Envision who will help students bring their project together. Last year a range of projects were developed by students through Legacy Champions including a crime prevention workshop by Newham College, a mini Olympic-themed event held by NewVic College and Waltham Forest College took part in a festival to encourage the community on how they can be more sustainable which was well received by the community, and went on to win the award for Legacy Champions of the Year. Colleges have until April to deliver their projects.

“ Thirty years ago young people were worried about apartheid in foreign countries, today students are worried about whether they can get a job or get a home”.

Ken Livingstone made this assertion today as he took part in an hour long question and answer session with students from Waltham Forest College, college in east london. He answered questions on a range of subjects central to students lives including the abolition of EMA and withdrawal of support for students, affordable housing, gangs and knife crime, the opportunities arising from the Olympics, and rising unemployment rates across the UK.

“When I was at school, most people who left school got a job. Now unemployment rates are at their highest and the divide between the rich and poor is getting bigger,” he said to students assembled in the new ‘Enrichment Centre’ at the College.

The subject of poverty struck a strong chord with students, as Waltham Forest continues to be one of the most deprived boroughs in the country and the 6th most deprived in London, with over 16,000 people experiencing employment deprivation in the area.

Public Services student Adam Kaka was concerned with the coalition cuts to public services, especially as he eventually hopes to join the police service. In August it was reported that the Metropolitan Police were expected to cope with cuts of over £500 million, which means frontline policing and support staff will be reduced by nearly 2,000. Ken Livingstone reflected that when he was last in power as Mayor of London, the number of police officers actually increased from 25,000 to 32,000 and he promised students that if he is voted into power at next years’ elections “every cut will be restored”.

Another key issue and talking hot-spot, were the rising transport costs which students felt were grossly unfair.

“This is the only area where the Mayor of London can make any change we want to”, he told students. “I aim to cut transport costs by 5% if I’m elected and impose a fare freeze in 2013, which will save Londoners hundreds of pounds a year.”

Poignantly he ended the question and answer session encouraging students to get involved in politics, and more importantly to vote.

“Politician’s know that there is a very low turn-out with voters under the age of 25. If young people do not vote, the Government will not help you. I cannot stress how important it is to get involved – only you can make a difference.”

Engineering student Oscar Guaqueta who attended the event was impressed with Ken Livingstone.

“I found it very insightful and interesting, and was impressed that Ken Livingstone attempted to answer all the questions put to him, however difficult it may have been. It’s good to see a politician taking an interest in the views of young people.”

Vice Principal Peter Glasgow, who compered the event, said:

“It was pleasing to see learners taking a real interest in how London should be governed. Following the questions and short presentations learners at Waltham Forest College are keen to become involved in making a difference in London”.

As part of his Mayoral campaign, the Labour candidate will be visiting all 32 London boroughs.

Waltham Forest College, one of the best college in east london, 1stinrail Ltd and Traxsydes successfully launched their Railway Engineering Track Apprenticeship Programme on Thursday 9 February 2012. The programme offers an unique learning opportunity for their Railway Engineering students, who are thrilled to have this calibre of work-based learning.

The Railway Engineering Track Apprenticeship Programme boasts access to a real track built on site at the College. Constructed by 1stinrail Ltd, it will provide a realistic understanding of Railway Track Maintenance. On the completion of their course, 1stinrail have pledged to give apprentices a guaranteed job interview and hopefully employment.

Specialists from the Railway Industry and the National Skills Academy for Railway Engineering also attended the launch, as well as the Apprentices themselves. One Apprentice, Rory Fairweather, expressed how excited he and his fellow students were to be on the programme and said: “We have already learnt a lot about what it takes to keep a rail network running. We all feel privileged to be on this programme because of the real hands on experience we are getting.”

Invited guests attending the launch included The Worshipful the Mayor of Waltham Forest Councillor Geoff Walker and the London Mayoral Candidate Ken Livingston. Mr Livingston said: “I am delighted with what Waltham Forest College, Traxsydes and 1stinrail are doing to rebuild the concept of young people going into apprenticeships, getting skills and achieving their full potential in life.”

Iain Elliott, Director of Business and International Development at the College, said: “The College is keen to deliver new programmes which provide students with the skills employers are looking for. This programme is a really good example of the private and public sector working together to achieve this goal.”

Mary Roberts, Director of Traxsydes, was delighted that the programme has started. She said: “It took us 18 months to develop this programme and I am very proud to see our apprentices start to make their way in the rail industry as readily as they have. They are studying for an NVQ Diploma in Rail Engineering Level 2 and will be the only apprentices in the UK to be certificated to work for London Underground and Network Rail.”

The College currently has 10 Railway Engineering Apprentices and hopes to increase this to 24 within the next six months. If you would like to obtain more information about Apprenticeship courses available at Waltham Forest College please email ian.wyatt@waltham.ac.uk or call 020 8501 8501.
This is the second year students have opted to stage a fundraiser as part of their course. By exploring the process involved in staging in this event, they completed a Personal & Social Development unit which will go towards their CACHE Level 1 Diploma in Caring for Children.

In keeping with the community spirit, the Childcare students also wrote to local businesses to ask for donations or raffle prizes towards their upcoming efforts. For the second successive year local estate agent Churchill Estates Walthamstow donated £200.
Kim Heywood of Churchill Estates commented: “ As a local company we feel it’s our duty to support colleges and schools in the area in order to give back to their local community.”

Nearly £400 was raised and this has been donated to the Haven House Children’s Hospice and the Thai Children’s Trust, which has close ties with the Waltham Forest College.

Rachel Thompson, Childcare lecturer at the College said: “I am really impressed with how enthusiastically my students approached every aspect of bringing the event together and also wish to thank Churchill Estates for their support.”

People who are taking higher education diploma courses to boost their career have been advised that conditions in Britain’s jobs market are getting better.

According to a report by KPMG and the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), the rate of growth in the permanent jobs market picked up in July.

Kevin Green, chief executive of the REC, said this has come about despite the prevailing weakness of Britain’s economy.

“We have now had two years of continuous growth and employers are still continuing to hire staff,” he commented.

People taking higher education diploma courses could benefit from growing demand for people with in the commercial industries.

REC noted that people with construction and engineering expertise are also proving to be highly sought after at the moment.

However, Mr Green acknowledged that employers are not taking staff on in the “numbers needed to radically reduce unemployment”.

This comes after the CBI predicted that the UK economy will grow by 2.2 per cent next year, following a 1.3 per cent expansion in 2011.

At waltham forest college, you will find higher education diploma courses in all major sectors where you can establish your career and hold a bright career in hand.

Young people in The London Borough of Waltham Forest College highlighted their borough on the world stage when they performed in the London New Year’s Day..
They marched in front of a street-side audience of around half a million people, plus a live television audience of tens of millions across the globe.

The youngsters showcased their borough for the important events taking place in 2012. Using the mediums of sport, music, dance, design and diversity, bought to life the themes for this year’s parade, which were the Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The Mayor, Cllr Geoff Walker, co-ordinated the effort from the community, said: “I am proud of the way our community has worked together to put this borough on the map.”

Young people from Waltham Forest College, the YMCA, and the Borough’s youth engagement and sports development groups performed routines choreographed by the local dance and performance group X7even.

The float was adorned with gold, silver and bronze medals to represent the Olympics and will also feature diamonds to mark the jubilee.

The lorry for the float had been provided by the Leyton based construction company, Riney, who also did the printing for the float’s decorations.

Mannequins made by students from Waltham Forest College were dressed in national colours of nations appearing in the Games.

The College based local radio station Street Life provided the sound system for the three hour parade, which followed the route between Piccadilly and Parliament Square.

Police cadets carried collection buckets in aid of the mayor’s chosen charity, which is Haven House children’s hospice in Woodford Green.

The Mayor added: “This was a wonderful opportunity to advertise our borough globally at the start of Olympic and Jubilee year and at the same time raise money for charity.

“The parade was a fantastic event which attracts marching bands from the USA and other countries and is watched by millions around the world.”

The Borough was placed 11th and received a special award and cash prize of £1500 which will be donated Haven House Children’s Hospice.
This was the 26th New Year’s Day parade in London and it has evolved into one of the World’s great street spectaculars with up to 10,000 performers from across continents aiming to put American style razzmatazz onto the streets of the capital.
