Germany’s top soldier has resigned over allegations of a cover-up related to a deadly Nato air strike in Afghanistan.

Wolfgang Schneiderhan’s move followed reports that key information about the 4 September action was withheld, the defence minister said.

The strike, which was ordered by a German commander, targeted two fuel tankers hijacked by Taliban militants.

But dozens of civilians were also killed in the attack, which happened in the northern province of Kunduz.

Defence Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg told parliament that Gen Schneiderhan had failed to provide proper information about the incident and had “released himself from his duties at his own request”.

Another senior Defence Ministry official, Peter Wichert, has also resigned.

The announcement came as Germany’s parliament debated whether to extend its military mission in Afghanistan, amid growing domestic opposition to involvement in the conflict.  …

The above news report by the BBC does not blame, either directly or obliquely,  the Obama administration for this disaster.

Neither the Obama administration nor the Clinton administration is responsible for what the Afghanistan war morphed into as the neocons directed America’s resources toward their own war in Iraq.

While the soldiers went to Iraq, the drones went to Afghanistan. Neither war had the manpower required but the neocons did not dare restart America’s military draft. So, manpower-wise, both Iraq and Afghanistan suffered. And the results of both wars showed it.

Under the neocons the “kill rate” in Afghanistan increased over what Bill Clinton’s administration did. President Bill Clinton’s administration was blowing up caves along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. The neocons decided to send drones to where-ever people congregated.  Perhaps there was a terrorist or two in a large gathering of Afghanistan people. So, when crowds formed the drones came. Men, women, children all perished as the neocons killed terrorists.

And some in America may have felt – “better them than our soldiers”. But America has never been known to put civilians in harms way in order to protect America’s soldiers. And it is not alright to sacrifice civilians for soldiers if there is less than a best effort put forth to save the civilians. Leaving civilians to the “luck of the draw” is not the American way.

Two of the pirates who boarded and hijacked a Basque trawler 400 miles off the coast of Somalia early on Friday were arrested by the Spanish Navy frigate ‘Canarias’ on Saturday night, after disembarking from the Alakrana onto the skiff the pirates used to assault the trawler.      

The boat was tracked by the Canarias helicopter and came to a halt after warning shots were fired across its bows.

On September 11, 2001, four planes were hijacked in the United States and turned into missiles destined for major American landmarks. Two hit the World Trade Center towers.  One hit the Pentagon, causing a portion of the historic landmark to collapse. 9:06 a.m. President Bush is notified of the second crash, but remains in the school classroom in Florida where he is doing a photo-op for his educational policies.

9:16 a.m. United Airlines Flight 93 is probably hijacked about this time.

9:17 a.m. The Federal Aviation Administration closes all New York City area airports.

9:21 a.m. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey closes all bridges and tunnels in the New York City area.

To those of you who lost loved ones in the attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, here’s what happened in their final moments.

Your father was a hero.  When the building shook from the blast, he did not concern himself with fear.  He helped unblock an office door which had been barricaded by debris and furniture that had moved. He freed three people.

Your friend who was on the plane being hijacked recognized immediately how serious the matter was and reached to calm the shaking hand of the person in the next seat.

Your wife saw a man bleeding from his head and she tore a piece from her shirt and made a bandage for him.

Your aunt helped her co-workers who could not find the exit through the smoke – they all made it. Then she went back for others.

Your nephew who was the pilot on the plane had only the safety of everyone on board in focus every second.

Your grandfather found a young man pinned under a fallen piece of ceiling and even when the young man said go on without him – he stayed until others heard the calls and came to help.

Your husband took on the hijackers believing it would cost his life. He helped save hundreds of people neither of you will ever know.

Your grandmother who worked at the Pentagon led hundreds who were physically stronger to a secure area, putting them before her own welfare as she always has.

Your uncle gave his water to a choking woman who gave him God’s blessing with every floor they arrived at, arm in arm.

Your brother who always wanted to be a policeman knew without doubt as he followed the cries for help up the stairs this was the moment why. 

Your sister searched her entire floor to make sure everyone was out of there before she began to make her own way down. 

Your friend held the exit door open for his office-mates with his wheelchair, cheering as they moved on that “We’ll all get out together.” And he didn’t so much hold on to those who lifted him down as he hugged them.

Your son would not let the tired woman stop. He cajoled her by telling her she reminded him of you; how you two had to meet. He even called her mom to keep her moving.

Your flight attendant daughter was forced to the back of the plane with all the others on board but stood in front of them in protective defiance; keeping herself between the terrorists and her passengers.

Your sister climbed back up three flights against the crowd and heat, believing her assistant was still there.

Your college buddy’s sense of humor kept all in his voice’s range smiling and moving with hope.

Your niece lent her shoulder to lean on for a man she had seen in the elevator so many times but whose name she never knew.

Your sister-in-law saw a man sitting in the stairwell coughing, and shared her asthma medicine. They moved on together.

Your firefighter brother-in-law helped hundreds of people out, redirecting them to clearer exits as he climbed higher and higher.

Your nephew and his boss carried an older woman 38 floors.

Your cousin got everyone to sing “The Long and Winding Road” as they worked their way down, making up the words they didn’t know.

Your mother’s last thoughts were the same thoughts she’s had as she lay her head down every night since you were born.

Three armed men have hijacked Aeromexico Flight 576 from Cancun, Mexico, according to local media. The plane hijacked in Cancun, flown to Mexico City Airport. According to the Mexican transport minister, the plane has landed safely in Mexico City.

According to flightstats.com, Aeromexico flight 576 operates on a Boeing 737 aircraft. The plane with 104 people on board was hijacked by 3 people who demand to meet with President Calderón. According to sources, the hijackers have not been able to enter the sealed cockpit and have threatened to blow up the plane if their demands are not met.

As of now, there is no information on the number of Americans on board. Aerovías de México, S.A. de C.V., operating as AeroMéxico, is an airline in Mexico based in Mexico City, Mexico.

Update as of 3:25 pm Central: All 104 people are off of the plane safely, at least 5 suspects have been detained by armed Mexican security forces in Mexico City. Whew, that is very good news!

On September 6th, 2009, Spamhaus blocked a /16 which is 65,536 IPs (1 Class B) on its SBL. This listing is filed under SBL68517. The IP range that is being blocked is 132.240.0.0/16. One can view the ASN information of 132.240.0.0 at robtex. According to robtex, the upstream for this range is AS3257 which is Tinet (formerly Tiscali). There are 3 current SBLs related to this large blocking: SBL68517, SBL78348 ( 207.86.112.0/21 of XO.com ) and SBL78350 ( 38.97.224.0/24 of Cogentco).

If one is rusty on subnetting (how many IPs after a / listing), one can check the CIDR entry on the wiki. Having over 65,000 IPs blocked by Spamhaus is generally a big deal to ISPs and webhosts. Spamhaus in its diligent research of the worst spam ogranisations has determined that this IP range which is owned by Oracle (AS794) is hijacked. Spamhaus classifies such activitiy under ROKSO as Zombies. Nearly all Spamhaus’ ROKSO (Register of Known Spam Operations) entries are names of companies, people or something similar which are known to engage in large scale spamming activities. Spamhaus lists such groups on its ROKSO lists if the spamming operations have been terminated with at least 3 different ISPs. Zombies (the activity of hijacking networks of IP ranges) gets its own entry.

The problem of zombies (hijacked netblocks) appears to be an issue in fighting spam and blocking various rogue networks. Spamhaus updates a list of DROP (Don’t Route or Peer) networks (hijacked netblocks or zombies) on its website for network administrators to use to block unwanted traffic to their networks, firewalls or webservers.

It would seem that the Regional Internet Registries (RIRs which are LACNIC, ARIN, RIPE, AfriNIC, and APNIC ) would be more protactive in preventing hijacking from happening in the first place. The RIRs allocate the IPs to different organizations, mainly to ISPs and large corporations. Perhaps IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) which is oversees the allocations of IP addresses should take some action as well in minimizing the stealing of netblocks on the Internet by spammers. But then again, one who watches the issue of fraudulent domain name purchases knows that ICANN is not taking direct action that often in minimizing falsified domains purchased by spammers often using stolen credit cards. These fraudulent domains are then used in many spamming activities including fast flux DNS on botnets.

To be honest with you, this whole story of nuclear arrows illegally on board on the Russian cargo first sounded too much of a James Bond plot to be taken seriously.

But it seems that every day I hear new pieces of information about this story (and it’s hard not to get the Moscow buzz) and I start to wonder if there’s not some truth into this story.

 Was the Russian cargo which mysteriously disappeared a few weeks ago in Scandinavian waters was actually carrying nuclear arrows? Nuclear wastes?

One thing sounds clear to me. There was something a lot more important on board than timber.

I must admitt that even at the very beginning of the story, I did not buy the Somali-type pirate attack along North-European shores. Who would be stupid enough to hijack a timber loaded boat in the midst of the most crowded and secured sea area on the planet?

Well, either someone very dumb, or someone who knew the cargo had a much more valuable freight than a bunch of trees…

Once that said, I would not have imagined one second that the freight was about uranium, nuclear wastes or even nuclear arrows.

The information has come around for quiet a time now around Moscow, but I first did not want to report it. I try in this blog to bring balanced and serious non reported information on Russia, I’m not here to spread all the conspiracy theory rumours that comes around (and believe me, there’s a lot of them!!!)

Well, I do not pretend that this nuclear theory is hard as a fact, but it gets more consistent every day.

If not (and I deeply hope it’s not), the Russian cargo mystery will remain intact for some time. One thing is sure now: the hijackers did not give a s*** about timber or even ransom. They took this huge risk because they knew there was something of high interest on board.

Hope we’ll know what it was soon enough.

Oh where, oh where, can that 4,000-ton Arctic Sea ship be? Yes, yet another cargo ship has been hijacked. OK, we have confirmation it has been pirated but know idea by whom and we have a ransom demand, now all authorities have to do is friggin find it! This is the first time in modern maritime history that a ship has disappeared off the face of the earth in European shipping waters. The ship is believed to have vanished in the English Channel, 50 miles from Penzance. Despite claims the ship was only carrying 6,500 tons of timber, rumors are rife that it may have been carrying a “secret cargo” in a “nuclear” kind of way. The Arctic Sea is owned by Finnish-based Russian businessmen. Read into that what you will! Oh and if for some reason you happened to sight a huge friggin ship with 15 very frightened Russian crewmen waving frantically at you, can you give the CIA a buzz.

Now isn’t that interesting? The Russian ship which has been missing since 4 August 2009 has been found back near the Cape Verde Islands. What happened to this ship and why there?

The cargo ship that mysteriously disappeared off the English Channel has been found 400 miles off the coast of the African nation Cape Verde, the French Defence Ministry said tonight.

Earlier today rumours that the ship had been spotted off the West African nation had been reported but unconfirmed.

However this afternoon the AFP, quoting a coastguard, is claiming that the ship has been found 400 miles off the coast of the former Portuguese colony.

‘The Arctic Sea is some 400 nautical miles off one of the islands of Cape Verde, therefore outside its territorial waters,’ a Cape Verde coastguard official told the AFP news agency.

French officials also said they had found a ship resembling the missing Arctic Sea near the Cape Verde islands, according to Defence Ministry spokesman Capt. Jerome Baroe.

He said details had been relayed to Russian and Maltese authorities.

Russia’s ambassador to Cape Verde said a Russian naval frigate was headed to the area.

A cargo ship with a Russian crew has disappeared off the coast of Portugal in the Atlantic Ocean, the Russian maritime journal Sovfracht reports.

It says contact with the Maltese-flagged Arctic Sea vessel, with a crew of 13, was lost on 28 July.

Russia’s navy and and security services are trying to locate the ship.

The same vessel was boarded by armed men in the Baltic Sea on 24 July. The attackers later left without taking any money or valuables, Sovfracht says.

It adds that the vessel – which was reportedly carrying timber – was due to arrive at an Algerian port on 4 August.

Arctic Sea was built in 1991 and is operated by a firm based in Russia’s northern city of Arkhangelsk, Sovfracht says.

‘Arctic Sea’, with a 15-strong Russian crew, vanished with its £1m cargo of timber at the end of July

An international maritime hunt is underway for a missing cargo ship which is thought to be the first hijacked vessel to be sailed through the English Channel in modern times.

The Arctic Sea, a Maltese registered, Latvian-owned ship with a 15-strong Russian crew, vanished with its £1m cargo at the end of July on its way from Finland to Algeria.

British coastguards were the last people known to communicate with the ship on 29 July as it passed along the Channel but it wasn’t realised at the time that anything was wrong.

It is now thought that when the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) was in radio contact with the ship that the person speaking to them was either a hijacker or a member of the crew with a gun pointed at his head.

The circumstances surrounding its likely hijacking are as puzzling as its current whereabouts. Swedish authorities were told by the Finnish shipping line operating the vessel that on 24 July the Arctic Sea had been boarded by eight to 10 heavily-armed men while it sailed through the Baltic Sea. The crew, three of whom were injured, were tied up and the black-clad and masked men, who purported to be narcotics police, searched the ship.

After 12 hours the intruders left and, supposedly, allowed the vessel to continue on its journey having damaged the communications equipment. But after reaching the Portuguese coast, having sailed along the Channel to get to the Atlantic, the Arctic Sea disappeared from the radar and hasn’t been seen since. Its destination had been the Algerian port of Bejaia which it was scheduled to reach on 4 August with its valuable cargo of timber.

Mark Clark, of the MCA, said: “It’s highly unusual. We don’t know the last time a hijacked vessel sailed the English Channel, it was that long ago. It’s very weird, very strange. There’s no parallel that we know about that comes this strange.

“We heard from this ship, not knowing it had been hijacked, on 29 July at 5.30 in the morning. Every ship has to report to us if they are on our side of the Channel. They said they had 15 crew on board and they were going from Jacobstad to Bejaia. They were carrying a load of timber.

“It wasn’t until later that we had a report from the Zeebrugge police to say it had been hijacked off the coast of Sweden. The contact we had suggested everything was OK on the ship but we don’t know if we were talking to a hijacker or a genuine crew member with a gun at his head.”

The next time the 3,988 tonne ship, which was built in 1992 and is thought to have been in good condition, was recorded was by a Portuguese coastal patrol aircraft. The timber on the ship belonged to a Finnish-Swedish paper, pulp and timber firm, Stora Enso, which has been trying to get details of the cargo’s whereabouts from the vessel’s Finnish-based management firm, Solchart Management.

Kari Numminen, of Stora Enso, said: “The shipping line has not told us anything. There is absolutely no information at all. Naturally, wild theories emerge in such a situation.”

Swedish, Finnish and Russian authorities are among those investigating the disappearance and the Russian navy is now thought to have dispatched a warship to join the hunt.

“This ship is of interest to very many people,” a Spanish coastguard official said. “There are no indications that it would have passed Gibraltar.

“It would be very strange if the ship would have managed to slip through unnoticed.”

I love FireFox.  It works much quicker than anything else and is much more reliable.  And there are all those neat little plug-in add-ons that really increase its convenience, versatility & effectiveness.  There are many great and useful little add-ons that I have used reliably and loyally. Until now, when I just noticed that something has hijacked my browser’s address bar!

It must be one of those great little FF add-ons that has hijacked my FireFox browser’s address bar, and I find that extremely annoying and a bit troublesome.  Especially since I have now uninstalled every single add-on that I have ever installed, including things like the Norton security toolbar, except for the few web designer/developer add-ons that I have found to be trusted tools.  Still, the error persists.

Or is it MY MISTAKE?  I bet it is.  Yup, it is.  Heck, the same thing happens in IE.

What is happening is that I am entering a typo when I search and I am getting Search.com results for my typo.  What is the typo?  Any name, with an extra dot com.

For instance, let’s say that you are at your home page.  Then you decide to go somewhere else, but instead of following a link on your home page or selecting a bookmark from the menu, you know the address and so you use the address bar.  Let’s just say that your home page is a dot com (.com) tld (Top Level Domain).  So in order to save typing, you just select the sometextstring in http://www.sometextstring.com/ and with that text selected, you simply start typing in the domain’s actual name where you want to visit.  But, if you also type in the extension of .com out of habit, you wind-up with the address of  http://www.foosite.com.com/.

Although http://www.foosite.com.com/ is very obviously a typo domain, c|net was smart enough to grab the domain.  So now they get all this typo traffic,  which is significant.  So obviously this is what confused me, because then c|net uses the domain at search.com to interpret the referring URL into a search term, and it looks like some search engine has hyjacked my browser address bar via some toolbar or plug-in.  So I went and uninstalled nearly all of them.

But c|net doesn’t mention any of this on their Search.com site (that I can tell in my search, using their own engine).    Instead, they seem to blame this deliberate action on a malicious software, toolbar or add-on.  VERY DECEPTIVE, c|net.  This lack of honesty and these type of deceptive business practices is exactly what I hate about corporations.  It is not immoral to do this, it is actually smart.  But if you are hassling us by deceiving us as we land there and blaming other crap over the stunt you pulled on us, you are quite simply railroading us with lies, c|net.

One has to wonder why “com” was not a reserved word in the first place, like domain (you can not register “domain” in any tld or country code domain extension).  There are simply a few words that are reserved because of such mistakes on their authority or perceived use.  Why wasn’t “com” one of those, this all seems perfectly ridiculous to have overlooked it.

One also has to wonder why c|net, usually a pretty smart cookie, can’t treat it’s visitors and patrons with any sort of respect.  I had nothing but admiration for them before now.  Now it sticks as a craw in my butt that they cannot treat me with respect and offer me the very url I am seeking.  Instead, they offer advertiser crap that I don’t want and has nothing to do with the original intended URL.  Search engines are supposed to be helpful utilities, not deceptive ad engines.  Clearly, they are making gobs on the traffic they are getting, but they could make a great deal more by treating us respectfully and honoring our intentions, which is exactly what a real search engine does.

Where is the ethics department at c|net now, in the toilet?  Don’t they understand what is considered ill-will can be hurtful to them as well as their patrons?

I am absolutely astonished that c|net has stooped so low.  Not because they did this, but because they hid it and were not honest, open and forthright about it.  They could have been seen as saints, and instead they are seen as thieves and scum spammers.

Grow up and get real, c|net.
