Ray Boltz wanted to do something nice.

He’d visited the mostly gay Jesus Metropolitan Community Church in Indianapolis and liked Rev. Jeff Miner, so he decided to give him a copy of his 1997 holiday recording, “A Christmas Album.”

It was one of 16 albums Boltz, 55, recorded during a nearly 20-year recording career that saw the Muncie, Ind., native become one of the better-known singer/songwriters in Contemporary Christian Music, a genre born out of the Jesus Movement of the early 1970s that made singers like Amy Grant, Sandi Patty, Michael W. Smith and Steven Curtis Chapman superstars in religious music with occasional excursions into mainstream pop culture.

Boltz, with about 4.5 million LPs, cassettes and CDs sold, never made a splash outside of Christian circles but he never really tried. With a handful of RIAA Gold-certified albums, three Dove Awards from the Gospel Music Association (GMA) and a string of 12 No. 1 hits on Christian radio, Boltz is a household name in evangelical circles. “Thank You,” (music) a sentimental song about a dream in which a Christian thanks the Sunday school teacher who led him to embrace Christ, is his signature song. It was the GMA song of the year in 1990 and has become a staple of Christian funerals. Other Boltz trademarks are “Watch the Lamb,” “The Anchor Holds” & “I Pledge Allegiance to the Lamb (Godtubevideo, location – Colosseum)”

Boltz brought the Christmas CD with him to MCC-Indianapolis on that cold, sunny December 2007 day and slipped it to see Jeff Miner on his way out with a note taped to it on which he’d jotted his e-mail address.

Ostensibly it was an innocuous thing to do, but for Boltz it was a big step. It eventually led to him opening up to Miner, one of the first times anybody outside Boltz’s circle of family and friends knew his long-kept secret: Ray Boltz is gay.

“I didn’t make a big deal of it,” Boltz says during a 90-minute phone interview from his home in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. “But I was trembling. I’d kind of had two identities since I moved to Florida where I kind of had this other life and I’d never merged the two lives. This was the first time I was taking my old life as Ray Boltz, the gospel singer, and merging it with my new life. Emotionally it was kind of a big deal to think about that.”

Ray Boltz was tired of living a lie.

He’d gotten to a point nearly three years before where he couldn’t continue down the road his life had gone.

His 33-year marriage to ex-wife Carol was, he says, largely a happy one. It produced four children — three daughters and a son who are now between 22 and 32 — but family life and going through the motions of being straight had grown so wearying to Boltz, he was in a serious depression, had been in therapy for years, was on Prozac and other anti-depressants and had been, for a time, suicidal.

“I thought I hid it really well,” he says. “I didn’t know people could see what I was going through, the darkness and the struggle. After I came out to my family, one of my daughters said she was afraid to walk in my bedroom because she was afraid she’d find me — that I’d done something to myself. And I didn’t even know they’d picked it up.”

The Boltz family remembers Dec. 26, 2004 for two reasons: the tsunami in the Indian Ocean but also the tsunami that their husband and father unleashed when he told them what had been bothering him for so many years.

Jeremy Shum seemed unemotional when asked by media what his opinions were.

The song starts off in the F# minor key, and switches between that and A major, which is no issue since they are related keys. Like all teen rock songs, and many popular songs, there is a sudden shift in key to G# minor/B major, which is a modulation up one tone (i.e. two semitones).

The lyrics use a dual-line rhyme system, where the first two stanzas simple-rhyme, and the last two simple-rhyme too. The structure of the song is A-B-C-D-B-E-B-F format. This is not what you’d call a classical format, but is a result of “B” being the chorus, and “D” being the bridge. Thus, it probably makes more sense to express the form as:

Verse 1 – Chorus – Verse 2 – Verse 3 – Chorus – Bridge – Chorus – Coda

The song is therefore made up of three verses, a chorus, bridge, and coda. One verse comes before the first time the chorus is played, and then followed by two verses. The chorus is then replayed, before shifting into the bridge. The chorus is repeated after the bridge, where a shift of key occurs. The song then happily finishes with a coda, like many pop songs.

The content of the lyrics utilize simple-rhyme, metaphorical language, and other poetic features. It also features a number of verbative words which are somewhat loquacious, at least in the teenage sense, in that the words are exclusive to “teenagers”; that is jargon, used by teenagers, which stress the tween/teen target audience of the song.

The voice is rather breathy, but is the “normal sound” these days on teen pop records. Phrasing is also used to express where each stanza starts and finishes.

Right. We need alternatives to the words to HEALER (now disfellowshipped). We need any creative input into the fiasco.

We need to show that we have even more imagination than Pastor Michael Gugli Mucho.

EDIT: Well, sorry about this ‘gap’ not being filled Our family got left high and dry without income by our insolvent employer and we basically had no way of getting to the CTCC where Hillsong are now based in Cape Town.  Its a fantastic venue by the way, but really out of the way for us as it is smack bang in the city foreshore area whilst we are on the other side of the Tygerberg hills.  But we are trying to get there from time to time as fuel allows and we continue to look to God for an outcome.  For those who wish to attend, the church has a fantastic website at http://www.hillsong.co.za.  You’ll have a blast worshipping the Lord Jesus and being surrounded by caring family there

Hoje estão quase 20 graus à sombra, uns 18 provavelmente, e aqui acredito que esteja ainda mais quente, porém o sopro do rio me refresca do calor (pois visto calças jeans e manga comprida) Não há uma só nuvem no céu. Pergunto-me se a Primavera finalmente chegou.

Minha leitura está sendo embalada pelo som de gaitas de foiley vindo do Irish Pub que fica atrás de onde estou. Agora ouço ainda duas estudantes cariocas tagarelando – o que é até um pouco incomodo, mas não o suficiente para roubar a minha paz.

À minha frente, meu amigo corre tranqüilo e bem acompanhado. É engraçado, quando cheguei aqui, há pouco mais de um mês, não se viam patos no rio. Talvez um ou outro. Agora, no entanto, há já muitos. Daqueles patos verdes e marrons que eu só havia visto antes nos filmes.

Todas as semanas, todos os dias – todo o tempo – acontecem coisas inacreditáveis pra mim e comigo. No último final de semana fui a um Congresso chamado “Mais que Música” com Delirious? e Hillsong London. Nunca passara pela minha cabeça que iria a algo assim enquanto estivesse aqui em Portugal. E estava bem cheio. E mais uma vez Deus me mostra Sua Onipresença, apesar de toda a idéia que fazemos no Brasil sobre o cristianismo na Europa.

Tive saudades do meu povo: da minha irmã, minha família (a do coração). Compartilhar com outras pessoas estes momentos é estranho demais pra mim. Fiquei quase melancólica. Aliás, tudo aqui é estranho pra mim. Tudo é novidade, é diferente. Tudo prova o meu coração, os meus desejos. Pra que vim. Ou melhor, pra quem vivo. As experiências são daquele tipo que a gente não consegue tirar da cabeça. Ter que tomar decisões, agir por conta própria, falar como e o que quiser. Enfim, cada dia neste ultimo mês e alguns dias tem sido um aprendizado. E não só isso, é um choque, um confronto com o que penso e quem sou.

Sinto saudades desta família, mas nada que me apavore. Penso que pela primeira vez estou vivendo Deus e pronto. Sem desculpas. Leio a Bíblia porque quero estar mais perto de Deus, ouvi-Lo e obedecê-Lo, não porque o Marco mandou fazer alguma coisa. Oro porque o meu coração deseja se comunicar com o Pai. Sou Luz porque é o meu chamado, não porque há alguém me vigiando. Deus é o meu vigia, ou melhor, minha sentinela, meu guarda.

Ao contrário do que muitos pensam desejo voltar para casa, não quero ficar aqui para sempre. Dia 16 de agosto estou de volta. É a esperança que me faz ir pra frente. Saber que aqueles que amo me aguardam e sabem que penso neles todos os dias. Estou amando este lugar, não me entendam mal. Gosto de cada pedrinha do chão de Coimbra. Hoje descobri um novo caminho para casa. E isso não é uma metáfora, apesar de cair muito bem. Subi por uma ruazinha e vim parar em frente ao meu prédio, praticamente. Mas, também descobri um novo caminho pra casa, um caminho que está no meu coração, que me une ao Brasil, à família e a Deus independente de onde eu esteja.

Vai dar uma hora da manhã e eu preciso muito dormir. Amanhã tenho aulas. Queria escrever o resto da noite, mas não posso. O coração fica apesar de o corpo ir deitar.

Like typical church-goers, we arrived late!  But once we got there, we were blessed by this church family.  The hosts (what we call ushers) were fantastic.

Worship at this church was amazing.  After the first worship set, Melissa noted the worship leader was unusually talented.  Chris thought he sounded eerily familiar.  Later we discovered his name was Matt Redman.

One of the most notable things about this church was its diversity.  The congregation was much like you’d imagine heaven to be- full of many types of people, languages and ages. 

In the afternoon, we visited a London hotspot called Speaker’s Corner where on Sundays, people stand on step ladders and exercise their freedom of speech.  People of all religious backgrounds preach from their platforms while hundreds of people gather around them to engage in argument and conversation. 

A day filled with activities of faith and religion.  It’s amazing how they’re similar, yet distinctly different.
