TWO FAMOUS explorers are coming to Scotland to share their experiences from travelling the globe.

Michael Palin and Nicholas Crane will be chatting about their adventurous pasts in a series of lectures focusing on Geography.

The Royal Scottish Geographical Society and Edinburgh University will be hosting the talks, both of which focus on recent travels of the two men.

The former Monty Python actor’s lecture is entitled ‘Twenty Years on the Road’ and will cover the sights he has seen in a travelling career that has taken him around the world.

Starting in 1989, Palin has gone pole to pole, survived the Sahara, explored the Himalayas and gone around the Pacific Ocean, establishing himself as a great travel presenter in the process.

Just back from Eastern Europe a year ago, Palin will be talking about his time travelling through some of the world’s most extreme environments, and the impact this has had on him.

Nicholas Crane is a geographer and journalist whose adventurous career spans more than twenty years with a vast number of articles, books and programmes under his belt.

With a passionate love of geography, he often writes about the joys of exploring an area with only a map and a compass.

Since learning more about global warming in the 1990’s, Crane now refuses to fly, which limits his scope for exploring and presenting.

However, the Coast star has found a niche in travelling around Britain, introducing his audience to the wonders and variety of the UK.

In the past he has explained his love of the British Isles.

He wrote: “By rights we should have a Canadian climate, but we don’t – we have palm trees in North West Scotland and we have these four wonderful seasons. Depending on what time of year you go around Britain you’ll see we have a landscape of extraordinary diversity.

“One thing we I wanted to do on Map Man and Coast is show this diversity to British viewers so I feel passionately about singing Britain’s praises.”

Bringing his enthusiasm to the lecture, Crane will deliver a talk on ‘Great British Journeys,‘ based on the BBC programme he is currently filming looking at the different ways to travel around the country.

Michael Palin will be at Assembly Hall in New College on Friday March 13 and Nicholas Crane talks at the George Square Lecture Theatre this Thursday, February 5.

The Himalayas’ glaciers may disappear entirely by 2035. But there’s good news: 2008 is likely to be only the tenth-warmest year on record, which means the crisis has obviously passed.

Zanim odwiedziłem McLeod Ganji moje informacje na temat Tybetu były dość znikome. Wszystko co wiedziałem wcześniej to tylko wzmianki medialne o tym Kraju, wzmianki o Chińskich represjach na tamtejszych mieszkańcach. I wydaje mi się że ciężko zobaczyć i być świadomym dramatu Tybetańczyków jeśli na prawdę nie interesuje się tamtym regionem, nie widzi się tego “na własne oczy”. Nie twierdzę że po 2-dniowym pobycie w “ich oazie”- McLeod Ganj stałym się :Tybetańskim” specem …. myślę że ciągle to co wiem i to co widziałem nie jest wystarczające żeby być osobą obiektywną w całej tej sprawie, ale na pewno moje spojrzenie jest ‘pełniejsze’.

Problem z informacjami na temat Tybetu jest taki, że różne strony rożnie o tym piszą … im strona bardziej oficjalna, tym jest bardziej zależna od rożnych instytucji, rządów. W ten sposób pokazują Tybet jako zbuntowaną część Chin, która można porównać do Katalonii, Czeczeni, Czy Kosowa. Brakuje podkreślenia że Tybet do 1959r. stanowił suwerenne, nie związane zupełnie z Chinami państwo najechane przez CHRL (ja to bym nazwał zaborem).

Z Chińskiego punktu widzenia “wjazd” w Tybet to strategicznie jedynie słuszna decyzja. Na powierzchni prawie 4 razy większej niż Polska żyło 6-7 milionów mieszkańców (aktualnie z powodu represji zginęło już milion Tybetańczyków), mieszkańców – Buddystów …pokojowo nastawionych do świata ludzi ze słabą armia. Dla Chin po stronie strat nie ma praktycznie nic, gdyby nie Olimpiada i szum wokół Tybetu czyli zły PR byłaby to tylko… i aż … moralność) …po stronie plusów :

“W Tybecie znajdują się bardzo bogate złoża chromu, miedzi, litu, żelaza, cynku i ołowiu oraz największe na świecie złoża uranu.” (wikipedia.org).

I teraz już wiadomo po co to wszystko ….. “… Wiedz, że to bujda, granda zwykła, Gdy ci wołają: “Broń na ramię!”, Że im gdzieś nafta z ziemi sikła I obrodziła dolarami;…” (Juliam Tuwim – Do Prostego Człowieka – 1929). Ropa, gaz, uran i wszystkie inne zasoby stanowią wystarczający powód żeby nie ustąpić …… po to zbudowano kolej do Lhasy… żeby zwozić zasoby i wsiedlać Chińskich osadników.

Jestem sceptyczny jeśli chodzi o rozwiązanie całej traumy na korzyść Tybetańczyków, żeby mogło to nastąpić ktoś musiałby stanąć po stronie Tybetu, ktoś czyli konkretne państwa potępiające Chiny, najlepiej mocarstwa. Ale niestety żadne państwo nie kwapi się żeby to zrobić, każdy chce mieć produkty ‘Made in China’ w najlepszych cenach.

Ciężko też generalizować i mieć pretensje do wszystkich Chińczyków – normalnych ludzi, którzy nie żyją w demokratycznym państwie – nie oni decydują o polityce Chińskiego rządu.

Byłem bardzo zaskoczony ilością ludzi bez palców u rąk i stóp na ulicach McLeod Ganj, zastanawiałem się czy jest to jakaś choroba, coś co ci ludzie być może mają od urodzenia ? Później dowiedziałem się, że masowe ucieczki Tybetańczyków przez Himalaje bardzo często kończą się śmiercią tych ludzi którzy przeprawiają się przez nie bez ciepłych ubrań, ekwipunku i żywności. Często kończą się też odmrożeniami….

Ciężko oceniać sportowców i wymagać, żeby bojkotowali igrzyska w Pekinie kiedy pracują na to wydarzenie 4 lata …. Podejście R. Korzeniowskiego, który z perspektywy sportowca który osiągnął wszystko …. mówi że nie pojechałby na Olimpiadę jest zupełnie inne niż dla kogoś kto dopiero walczy o swoje miejsce w historii sportu. Liczę na to i jestem pewien że w trakcie igrzysk sprawa Tybetu jeszcze bardziej będzie nagłośniona.

Może jednak coś się zmieni.

Alexander Csoma was born in Transylvanian village of Koros in April, 1784 in a poor but noble military family known as Sekler. He passed the examene rigorosum and went to the University of Gottingen to study English and Arabic. During his studentship he promised to himself to dedicate his life to visit Central Asia in search of the origin of the Hungarians. Hence, he started his journey towards the East in November, 1819. There was no Government to support his undertaking. In fact he left without a passport, he only had a permit to go to Bucharest on some business with an insufficient amount of money. But he had certain qualities which were to be of more use; he knew languages such as Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Russian and English. Other assets were his ability to walk long distance, to sleep without a bed or a blanket, to survive on almost any kind and quantity of food and to value the company of poor and simple people.

His journey was not especially lucky. He tried to enter Central Asia by the Karakorum road, he was stopped at Leh, the Capital of Ladakh.

It was not the worst place for a philologist to be stopped there. All around were ancient monasteries full of books unknown and inaccessible till then. Their language had not yet been deciphered by European learning. When the English traveller W. Moorcraft offered Korosi Csoma some assistance, he happily agreed to stay and prepare a grammar and dictionary of the Tibetan language in the hope that in the books preserved in the monasteries he would find some records about those legendary heroes he had set out to learn about.

In 1831 Csoma walked to Calcutta and presented all the papers he had compiled in the hills to the Asiatic Society of Bengal, which had sponsored his researches since 1824 by giving him a monthly stipend of fifty rupees.

His two most famous books, a dictionary and grammar of Tibetan language were printed in 1834.

His other two great works were though less known of similar significance for Buddhist and Sanskrit Buddhist Studies. The first is an edition and English rendering of the Sanskrit and Tibetan Buddhist terminological dictionary called “Mahavyutpatti” which originates from the 3^rd – 4^th centuries A. D. The other work is a catalogue and survey of the Buddhist Tripitaka in Tibetan. This work, published in the “Asiatic Researches” in 1834 and translated into French in 1881, has first given an idea of the various branches of Buddhist Sanskrit literature, which has been lost to a great extent in India.

The Asiatic Society of Bengal elected him an honorary member and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences a member. But these “successes” did not change his life-style, which was formed in the Himalayas. His food was confined to tea, of which he was very fond, and plain boiled rice, of which he ate very little. On a mat on the floor, with boxes of books on all four sides, he sat, ate, slept, and studied, never undressed at night and rarely went out during the day. He never drank wine or spirits or used tobacco or other stimulants.” In 1831 Lord William Bentick having received him warmly arranged for him a room in the building of the Asiatic Society Calcutta, and agreed to meet all the expenses for the publication of his work.

With a view to materializing his initial ambition Alexander Csoma de Koros decided to begin his journey once more to Central Asia. In a touching farewell letter he acknowleged his indebtedness to the Asiatic Society and left all his books, papers and savings at its disposal. Having travelled on foot he reached Darjeeling with fever on March 24 and passed away inspite of best medical treatment available thereon April 11, 1842.

Thus, ended the life of a noble scholar who visited India from a far off country and who dedicated his life for the cause of Indology in general and Tibetology in particular.
