I’m a hoarder by nature, so my drawers and cupboards are full of all sorts of useless old tat

I’m a hoarder by nature, so my drawers and cupboards are full of all sorts of useless old tat – buttons for shirts I’ve long since got rid of, Top Trumps cards I haven’t used since I was 11, that sort of thing.

But when I go on holiday I can legitimately hoard things, and often what looks like nothing to other people has great significance to me: sat in front of me, for example, is a big stone which I am using as a paperweight to keep an unruly pile of receipts in check. But it’s not just any old stone. It was a stone I washed Bosante the elephant with in a crocodile-infested river in Nepal in the summer.

Having a bath with an elephant - out of shot to the left is a crocodile...

I’m probably a bit sentimental with souvenirs, and I do tend to keep nigh-on anything as a reminder or keepsake. But I love buying things which show the culture of the place I’ve been to, and Nepal was brilliant for that.

Ganesh painting

Above is a painting of the Hindu God Ganesh which I picked up in Pokhara for less than £5. It is painted onto cloth and the colours and design are stunning. Held up to the light or placed in a well-lit window, the colours glow and shimmer – it took somebody hours to make, and I feel privileged to own it and be blessed by its ‘good luck’ charm.

Hand-carved wooden face mask

Hanging beneath Ganesh on my wall is this slightly scary face mask which I picked up for the equivalent of about £3.50 in Pokhara. I particularly like the third eye in the middle of the forehead, which I think is a nod to the wrath of the Hindu God Shiva whose third eye opens to see the evils of the world…

Buddhist prayer wheel

More religious iconography, this time recognising the influence of Tibetan culture into Nepal from the displaced refugees who have set up villages and monasteries throughout the country. This prayer wheel opens up to reveal Buddhist scriptures and mantras which are chanted as the wheel is spun.

An Indian wall-hanging

To diverge away from Nepal, my greatest souvenir extravagance this summer was the above wall-hanging (£10.50) which I bought in Mandawa in the northwest of India. According to the vendor, it was hand-stitched by “gypsy women” over a period of several weeks.

I don’t doubt he was telling the truth, but maybe I do doubt his judgement (or his eyesight). As I walked into his shop he beamed at me and shouted “James Bond!”

Shiva first appears as a complete god with his own myths in the epics. In the Ramayana, Rama breaks the bow that Shiva had given to King Janaka and wins Sita as a bride. Then even though he is an avatar of Vishnu he worships Shiva just before crossing the ocean to invade Lanka. The Mahabharata has passages that call Vishnu supreme and others that praise Shiva as Mahadeva, the great god. It must have been a time of strife between the devotees of the two deities because the epic is full of mutual claims of superiority.

Lord Shiva & Parvati Statue

Also there are more conciliatory passages by writers saying that in the final analysis Shiva and Vishnu are the same. One passage in the Harivamsa trying to reconcile the two warring sects says, there is “no difference between Shiva who exists in the form of Shiva.”

Shiva is usually depicted as a wandering mendicant. He is dark skinned, wears a tiger skin and his bare body is smeared with the ash from cremation grounds. His matted locks are piled on top of his head and within his locks hides the river goddess Ganga, while the crescent moon glows above his forehead. Shiva wears a necklace or rudarksha beads and carries a small drum, the Damaru; a trident, the Trishula, and a begging bowl. The Trishula is his favourites weapon but his also the divine archer and uses a giant bow called Pinaka.

Lord Shiva - Supreme God in Hinduism

Across his forehead are drawn the three stripes called the Tripundraka and in the centre is the third eye that symbolises wisdom and also anger. Snakes writhe around his neck like a living necklace and beside him sits his vehicle, the Nandi bull. He lives on Mount Kailash in the Himalayas and has no heavenly palaces, home is often in a cave or under shady trees. Sometimes, in a happier frame of mind Shiva dresses as a bridegroom in silks but even then unlike Vishnu he wears little jewellery. The simple mendicant is quite pleased wearing just a garland of fresh flowers and bilva leaves. He is an earthy god, in essence an ascetic and is never a resplendent king of the heavens like Vishnu.

Lord Shiva or God Siva is one of the main Deities of Hinduism, worshiped as the paramount lord by the Saivite sects of India. Shiva is one of the most complex gods of India, embodying seemingly contradictory qualities. He is the destroyer and the restorer, the great ascetic and the symbol of sensuality, the benevolent herdsman of souls and the wrathful avenger.

Shiva was originally known as Rudra, a minor deity addressed only three times in the Rig Veda. He gained importance after absorbing some of the characteristics of an earlier fertility god and became Shiva, part of the trinity, or trimurti, with Vishnu and Brahma.

Lord Shiva Statues & Sculptures from ShalinCraft

Shiva wears a snake coiled around his upper arms and neck symbolizing the power he has over the most deadly of creatures. Snakes are also used to symbolize the Hindu dogma of reincarnation. Their natural process of molting or shedding their skin is symbolic of the human souls transmigration of bodies from one life to another.
Shiva’s female consort and wife is Parvati; because of his generosity and reverence towards Parvati, Shiva is considered an ideal role model for a husband. The divine couple together with their sons – the six-headed Skanda and the elephant headed Shiva – reside on Mount Kailasa in the Himalayas.

The Nataraja (King of dances) posture depicts the moment of his dynamically. Here, the creator aspect is signified by the drum in the upper right hand, standing for the primordial sound. The preserver aspect is indicated by the posture of benevolence and fear not, of the lower right hand., standing for the granted consequent on the kindling of the fire of wisdom in the aspirant’s heart, the fire that is held in his upper left hand.

The fire is lighted with one’s total surrender at the feet of the Lord as suggested by the lower left hand pointed to the feet. The dance itself and the fire encircling the image stand for thee destruction of evil propensities once we open ourselves up to him, for in destruction lie the seeds of regeneration toward the state of divinity. At he base of the image evil personified is shown as equilibrium that the primordial elements – sattva, rajah and their base. The crescent moon on his forehead signifies the gradual awakening of divine consciousness in us. The snake means the awakening of the divine energy, as has already been indicated. The vehicle of Shiva is the bull which stands for our animal nature that has bee brought under his total control.

Lakshmi, when she resides in a king’s palace is Rajyalakshmi; in a home she is Grihalakshmi. On the battlefield she is the fickle Jayalakshmi who often changes sides. As the goddess of fame she is Yasholakshmi and as Bhagyalakshmi she spreads good fortune.
And the supreme ideal goddess is the great Mahalakshmi. In the north she is worshipped on Deepavali when many traditional businesses begin their new financial year. In Bengal she is worshipped on the first Purnima after Dussehra. The auspicious mark often made on the walls of Hindu homes called the Vasudhara symbolises her presence in that place.

He is also called Mahaveera (the great hero ) or Pavan-suta (son of air) or Bajarangbali. Hanuman became the greatest and the most faithful helper of Rama in his campaign against Ravana. When sent as Rama’s envoy Hanuman was given a ring to convince Sita that he was truly her husband’s messenger. With a formidable leap he crossed the seas and reached Lanka. He succeeded in meeting Sita and brought her news back to Rama.

Ravana’s guards, while he was in Lanka, had succeeded in catching Hanuman, who was then brought to the demon-king’s court. At Ravana’s command his tail was set on fire and with his burning tail Hanuman created a great havoc in Lanka. When Rama’s younger brother was lying unconscious in the battlefield and the herb that could cure him was not available, he came forward to bring that herb from Himalayas. In the hurry when Hanuman could not trace that magical herb he lifted the complete hill and flew to bring the same to battlefield. The arrow that had wounded Lakshmana was blessed in the way that whoever was wounded in the night with it could not recover if the cure was not obtained before daylight. Hanuman knew this and was determined to bring it before the sun rose. The powerful Ravana compelled the sun to arise on the mountain at midnight. Hanuman being enraged at this conspiracy, leaped up and seizing sun’s chariot placed the blazing god under his arm and put the mountain on his head.

Only after the application of the desired herb on the wound of Lakshmana, Hanuman permitted the sun to depart. Hanuman accompanied Rama on his return to Ayodhya and Rama gave him the blessings of perpetual youth and deathless existence. He was so intensely devoted to Rama and Sita that once he even tore up his chest with claws and showed that images of Rama and Sita were in his heart.

Dasaratha, the king of Ayodhya, a kingdom in the north of India at that time, did not have a son and was advised by the holy men to perform a ceremony with which he would ask the gods to favor him with one. He did so, with great pomp and piety, and was bequeathed with a cake of divine origin that he was instructed to share among his three queens. He did so but his second queen, Kaikeyi, was allotted her share last and took affront at this late treatment.

She threw the cake away and a crow flew away with. Kaikeya repented and later became the mother of Bharata, the second of the four sons which Dasaratha was blessed with as a result of the ceremony. His first son Rama, born of his first wife Kaushalla, is the seventh incarnation of Vishnu and the epic battle he conducted to rid the universe of Ravana, the tyrannous demon king of Lanka, is well-depicted in the Indian epic Ramayana. Dasaratha’s youngest wife Sumitra, bore him the twins Lakshman and Satrughna. They were the youngest and Lakshman was inseparable from Rama, his eldest brother, and his devotion to his eldest brother throughout their strife against the demon-king is still considered as symbol of fraternal devotion in India.

It is only Hanuman who wards off adverse influence of planets like Saturn and Rahu, protects from business failures, failure in examinations, politics, sports and other fields. In a strange fusion of the machine and the faith, which reveals when a road-roller, truck, locomotive engine, or a ship, painted with an icon of Hanuman or simply his name, passes across, Hanuman is believed to avert mishap at sea, rail-track and roads, and protect machine and treasures it contains.

When Agni, the god of fire, gave Dasharath, the king of Ayodhya, a bowl of sacred dessert to share among his wives so they may have divine children, an eagle snatched a part of the pudding and dropped it where Anjana was meditating, and Pavana, the god of wind delivered the drop to her outstretched hands. After she took the divine dessert, she gave birth to Hanuman. Thus Lord Shiva incarnated as a monkey, and was born as Hanuman to Anjana, by the blessings of Pavana, who thus became Hanuman’s godfather.

Hanuman, the mighty ape that aided Lord Rama in his expedition against evil forces, is one of the most popular idols in the Hindu pantheon. Believed to be an avatar of Lord Shiva, Hanuman is worshiped as a symbol of physical strength, perseverance and devotion. Hanuman’s tale in the epic Ramayana – where he is assigned the responsibility to locate Rama’s wife Sita abducted by Ravana, the demon king of Lanka — is known for its astounding ability to inspire and equip a reader with all the ingredients needed to face ordeals and conquer obstructions in the way of the world.

Then Hanuman suddenly became very small and went in through her ear, coming out of her mouth, thus fulfilling the boon. In the Ashokvatika or forest of Ashoka trees on Lanka, Hanuman spies on Ravana, who is trying in vain to press Sita into becoming his wife. Later he contacted Sita in the gardens of Ravana’s palace, told her of the plans being made for her deliverance and gave her Rama’s signet ring as a token.

Pleased with his succes, Hanuman fought the demon Meghnaath, son of Ravana, in the gardens of the palace of Lanka. He won over Meghnaath, but was finally captured by Ravana’s demons. Brought before the demon king, Ravana ordered that while as a messenger of Rama he could not be killed, his tail could be set afire with cloth and oil. But Hanuman used his powers to enlarge his tail indefinitely, untill the demons had no cloth left to cover it. While they still tried to put fire to his tail, Hanuman became suddenly very small and escaped from his ropes. Trailing his burning tail behind him, Hanuman then set fire to all of Lanka and flew back to the mainland. He rejoined Rama and gave him valuable information on Ravana’s forces. The army crossed a bridge to Lanka that was made by another monkey leader and master architect called Nala.

During the mighty battle that followed, Hanuman defeated the Demon Lankini, who was the principal guard of the city of Lanka. Hanuman’s greatest feat during the battle of Lanka however was to bring back the herb that cured Lakshman from a fatal wound. He flew al the way to the Himalayas to find it, harassed by many demons, such as Kalanemi. Because Indra was confusing him, Hanuman could not find the herb and finally brought the entire mountain to Lanka. Ravana was defeated by Ram. And Ram and Sita were crowned King and Queen of Ayodhya. Obviously Hanuman was present, remained Ram’s favorite general and continued his life in service to him. When Rama offered him any boon that he cared to name, he asked to live for as long as men spoke of the deeds of Rama.

The wind god, Vayu (or Maurta), fell in love with her and through another ‘immaculate conception’ was born a son, Maruti.

Maruti was no ordinary child. Once, when Anjana was away, he felt hungry and, mistaking the red disc of the sun to be a luscious, ripe fruit, he leap up and grabbed it. With no sun, an eclipse-like darkness cloaked all creation. Rahu, who made eclipses happen by swallowing the sun and the moon, was puzzled. Who had swallowed the sun? He set out on a mission to nail the culprit. Maruti, still hungry, saw him approaching and mistook him for yet another fruit! Rahu fled.

With the sun gone and Rahu on the runj, Indra, lord of indralok, under whose supervision the whole universe functioned, mounted his huge elephant, Airavata, to deal with the awesome child. When Maruti spotted the looming bulk of Airavata, he mistook it for a still bigger fruit and gleefully lunged for it. Indra had to use his divine thunderbolt (vajra) to strike Maruti. The child crashed down to earth and his jaw (hanu in Sanskrit, hence the name Hanuman in North India; in South India, Anjaneya, after his mother) was disfigured. A furious Vayu stopped blowing and ceased all life sustaining functions. Plants wilted, clouds stayed motionless. Without air and sunlight, life on the universe was paralyzed.

Indra and his entourage appealed to Brahma, the creator, to make peace with Vayu. The gods finally appeased Vayu by granting a handful of boons to Hanuman that made the child more powerful than ever. Indra himself promised that lightning and thunder would never harm Hanuman while the sun god decreed that no fire would singe him.

However, the ascetics, whose profound meditations had been broken by Maruti’s escapades, feared the child would, in his innocense, cause more havoc wiht his powers. So they declared that Hanuman would remain ignoratn of his great powers until a great man in pursuit of a supreme goal sought his help. Thus it transpired that years later, Rama, the noble prince of Ayodhya, awakened Hanuman’s sleeping powers. Rama was banished by his stemother for fourteen years to the forest where hiswofe, Sita, was abducted by the demon king Ravana of Lanka. Hanuman becmae indispensable to Rama in his quest of a worthy goal, rescuing Sita and vanquishing evil.
Hanuman’s life symbolises true devotion and selfless service. At a purely philosophical level, the name ‘Hanuman’ means someone who has vanquished (hanan) ego or pride (maan). In the Hindu approach to spirituality, one can only progress spiritually and find a grue guru when one has surredered the individual ego to the supreme One.

Hindus believe in ten avatars of Lord Vishnu among a multitude of gods and goddesses. One of Vishnu’s avatars is Rama, who was created to destroy Ravana, the evil ruler of Lanka. In order to aid Rama, Lord Brahma commanded some gods and goddesses to take the avatar of ‘Vanaras’ or monkeys. Indra, the god of war and weather, was reincarnated as Bali; Surya, the sun god as Sugriva; Vrihaspati, the preceptor of the gods, as Tara, and Pavana, the god of wind, was reborn as Hanuman, the wisest, swiftest and strongest of all apes.

Once the creation of Brahma has run its course and reached its final stage, Shiva destroys it all, so that the cycle of creation can start again. He dances the maddened cosmic dance of the Tandava and everything is demolished under his dancing feet. His third eye opens and its fierce rays all to ashes.

Another Shiva cult is of the Tantric way of worship which is an obscure, rather esoteric sect that uses complex spells, sacred formulas and secret rituals known only to the inigiates. Its worship includes both Shiva and his consort the Devi and offers salvation through this hidden, mysterious Tantric way. The Tantric also influenced a Buddhist sect and is popular in Tibet.

Shiva is the destroyer of the world, following Brahma the creator and Vishnu the preserver, after which Brahma again creates the world and so on. Shiva is responsible for change both in the form of death and destruction and in the positive sense of the shedding of old habits. In Satyam, Shivam, Sundaram or Truth, Goodness and Beauty, Shiva also represents the most essential goodness.

Shiva lives on Mount Kailasa in the Himalayas. Shiva’s main attributes are the trident that represents the three gunas and the snakes that show he is beyond the power of death and poison and also stand for the Kundalini energy. The vehicle of Shiva is the white bull called Nandi (the joyful). He is often seated on a tiger skin or wears a tiger skin, with the tiger representing the mind.

Shiva & Parvati dancing in the Himalayas. Shiva has many forms, which are visible in his Panchavaktra form with 5 heads, a combination of all Shiva energies : Aghora (resides in the creamation grounds), Ishana (most often appears as the shivalingam), Tat Purusha (meditating), Varna Deva (the eternal Shiva) and Saddyojat or Braddha Rudra (the old wrathful form). The last also forms the connection to the Rudraksha mala – a rosary made of the dried fruits of the Rudraksha tree.

Shiva Nataraj’s dance represents both the destruction and the creation of the universe and reveals the cycles of death, birth and rebirth. His Dance of Bliss is for the welfare of the world. In the pose of Nataraj, the King of Dance is giving darshan to his beloved devotees within the “Hall of Consciousness”, which is the heart of man. Under his feet, Shiva crushes the demon of ignorance called Apasmara Purusha, caused by forgetfulness. One hand is stretched across his chest and points towards the uplifted foot, indicating the release from earthly bondage of the devotee. The fire represents the final destruction of creation, but the dance of the Nataraj is also an act of creation, which arouses dormant energies and scatters the ashes of the universe in a pattern that will be the design of the ensuing creation.

Hindu religion believes that the three gods – Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are manifest forms of Unmanifest God. Brahma creates, Vishnu supports the creations and inspires evolutions and finally Shiva destroys all through doom.

The milk is the symbol of kindness and basic support of life as it literally fosters a newborn. The kindness and support medium are needed to keep the creations alive and thrive.

In a likely scenario the sea will become a churning mass and its entire surface will be covered with a great layer of white foam making it look like milkshake. A gifantic sea creature spread over like a mindboggling flotilla which will have thousands of hood like projections grown upwards. It will cast down thousands of tubular suspensions going deep into the sea to suck in life support foods.

Lord Vishnu is supposed to be reclining on thousand hooded Sheshnaga in the sea of milk, ‘Kshirsagara’. The scene is uncannily similar. We can visualise Vishnu as the evolutionary spirit.

For the Shastras it has already happened but for the science it is to happen, the science it is to happen the Sheshnaga, Vishnu and sea milk phenomenon.

The feminine aspect of the Preserver is Lakshmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu. The grace of God is personified in her as one who brings prosperity. One hand she holds in abhaya mudra (with the hand held open with the palm facing the devotee and fingers facing upwards) which says “Do not fear” and the other in the vardana mudra (with the hand with the palm facing the devotee but with the fingers facing downwards) symbolic of the prosperity and grace she gives to human race. She sits on the lotus and holds lotus flowers in her hand emphasising the importance of pure living without which her grace and giving are meaningless and prosperity but an empty shell.

Goddess Laxmi Brass Statues from ShalinCraft

The word Lakshmi is often used applied to define a fortunate woman. In one ancient story from mythology Lakshmi is the daughter of a great sage, Bhrigu. Once, being displeased with the gods, Bhrigu pronounced a curse on all celestial beings, which included his daughter. To escape from all curse, Lakshmi took refuge in the primeval ocean. When the gods and the demons chruned the ocean to obtain the drink of immortality, Lakshmi appeared from the waters as a beautiful woman in a lotus flower; hence she is also known as padma or Kamala, meaning lotus.
In her many incarnations she appears as the wife of the Vishnu avatars. Vishnu became Rama, she was Sita; and when he came as Krishna, Lakshmi was Rukmini.

She is shown as a beautiful woman with four hands, rising from a lotus. In two hands she holds lotus flowers, with the third she bestows wealth in the form of gold coins and with the fourth she blesses the worshipper. As the goddess of wealth and good fortune. she is offered special worship on the Lakshmi puja day during the Diwali festival.
