Starting off with cocktails and canapés in Mayfair and ending with … um … cocktails and canapés near Covent Garden (with a little bit of beer and re-appropriated graffiti viewing in Soho along the way), last night was one of those nights when during a brief pause I took a step outside myself to pat myself on the back for settling down in such a dynamic city.

That was a while back now though, so last weekend they got a fresh coat of paint from more of Bristol’s great and good. All done in conjunction with the museum, who are going to have a bit of a display about it when it finally opens to boot.

Some really nice work done, of all sorts of styles, and the usual ‘queuing to take photos’ thing going on earlier today. Here’s some results…

sitting silent on a stump in the wood
contemplating on nothing good
a saw the little nymph compose her magic spell
sneaking closer I tripped and fell
becoming the recipient of her chants
understanding not one of her rants
next I woke in someplace new
bound and caged, nowhere I knew
the mischievous creature grinning wide
her next intentions she did not hide
boiling a cauldron of human size
her gaze transfixed on her dinner prize
the guest of honor would not eat
I would serve only for my meat

struggling against my limbs’ constraints
panic stricken, I almost faint
then from the left a wondrous sight
my father’s bow, arrow pulled tight
once he felled that cursed hine
in releasing me from the sinewy binds
he now turned away from the beast
but his arrow had only grazed it’s breast
it stood now angry craving blood
approached my father where he stood
turning quickly to face the monster
a knife drawn to battle his accoster

my fear gave way to buckled knees
landing softly on it’s nest of reeds
then when I did finally wake
in my bed, at father’s place
I ran to find out what had happened
to find he thought by brain had slackened
my entire story was surreal
childish dreams that seemed too real

BFTCAA

Writer-David Hine

Artist-Jeremy Haun

A realtively new creative team for DC tackles one of the most interesting corners of the Batman universe. I originally wanted to review Gaiman’s new Whatever Happened To The Caped Crusader? ending issue but Vlaz covered it, and while we don’t look down on multiple reviews here at POW! Comics, I felt that he covered it and my review would just be an echo of his. So I decided to instead discuss another Bats title that I thoroughly enjoyed.

The narrative is from the perspective of Dr. Jeremiah Arkham, descendent of Amadeus, the resident head doctor and owner of the Asylum. We’re flashbacked to before Black Mask has freed the inmates and we’re given a different take on whats goes on inside the famous prison. Hine manages to truly make the reader do a double take and rethink what, exactly, the Asylum is there for. It’s a dark riddled labyrinth inside the mind of the good doctor, who by some standards, may be as mad as some of his inmates.

Haun, who hasn’t done much for DC before, does well at capturing the dark atmosphere of the comic withot making it too mucked up. (Take a note X-Factor.) I’m interested to see if he could handle action sequences and his rookie status as a Batman title artist shows. His Clayface is…not the best looking incarnation of the creature I’ve seen, but overall, this is a well drawn comic. Hine is the true talent behind this one-shot and he shines. His writing is atmospheric and in depth without being too wordy.

Now, the real interest is in the new inmates introduced. Three new roomies of the crazy house are introduced and they are indeed and interesting bunch. Hine spotlights this trio as Arkhams best work and it shows the reader the good intentions that Jeremiah has behind his dark thoughts. The characters are not serial killers or deluded psychopaths but instead truly troubled. They are all barely introduced, baiting us with origins, and are incredibly interesting. The end of the issue leaves us with a cliffhanger, and leaving me with a wanting for more on this new odd bunch of outcasts.

Studier organisert i samlinger
Hvordan fungerer samlingsbasert undervisning?

PlayStation reveals a sack-load of content for Christmas

Sony New Zealand has announced a significant Christmas marketing campaign which covers their leading range of PlayStation platforms and exclusive software titles.

Spearheaded by PlayStation 3, the campaign will showcase the ‘world of entertainment’ that only PlayStation can deliver to all entertainment seekers, with both hardware and software set to be promoted through an integrated campaign that includes TV, online, experiential, PR, plus a strong retail presence, all in the lead up to Christmas.

Sony NZ also confirmed that it will be offering one bonus game with every PS3 purchased during the holiday season. Consumers will have the choice between LittleBigPlanet, SingStar ABBA (with microphones), MotorStorm Pacific Rift and Resistance 2, as and when each new blockbuster title is released over the coming weeks. All games are exclusive to PS3 and valued at $119.95.

Unique content, which consumers can only enjoy through a PlayStation platform, is set to be a key sales driver this Christmas, with something on offer for everyone. For social gaming enthusiasts, SingStar ABBA on PS3 and PlayStation 2 (PS2TM) and Buzz! Quiz TV on PS3 will satisfy anyone up for some family fun this season. In contrast, Resistance 2 and MotorStorm Pacific Rift sees two of the top selling PS3 titles to date releasing sequels that up the ante on the originals, already achieving critical acclaim that will appeal to more traditional gamers.

“Whether it’s watching Hancock on Blu-ray, getting together for some family fun on SingStar, saving mankind in Resistance 2 or creating and sharing your LittleBigPlanet with the world, only PlayStation can offer such a diverse array of entertainment for everyone and anyone to enjoy this Christmas,” added Hine.

With the unfortunate deaths in our family comes the fortunate time of seeing people who haven’t been together in years- sometimes from childhood. Today was one of those days. Some of us jokingly said nametags would have been helpful! People change alot in 20 years or so! Still, it was good to be with family, to see their families, and share stories.

The other wonderful thing that has happened is by getting together we have begun to share the pictures of the past. There is an abundance of pictures from my grandma and now from my great aunt. The question is, who gets them all? The answer? Everyone! My cousin started a site for our family to put pictures, stories, geneology, and even family recipes on! http://hinearchive.blogspot.com/ It’s really a great way to share everything with everyone. And, if someone wants a picture all they have to do is print it.

It’s amazing what the world of technology lets us do! There are things that date back to the 1800’s. Can you imagine what our ancesters would think if we told them of all of the possibilities of the times now? It kind of makes me wonder what the future possibilities are!

Word Studies in the New Testament Understanding Divine Knowledge from God–Part One 2Co 4:6 For

Word Studies in the New Testament

Understanding Divine Knowledge from God–Part One

2Co 4:6

For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
(New King James Version)

_______________________________________

This verse begins with the word “for” which is translated from the Greek word hoti. One of the other English words for this Greek word is “because”. Because God performed a certain divine act in the life of the believer, there was a manifested change in the mind of the believer. The manifested change came in the form of divine revelation knowledge concerning the glory (doxa) of God. Because God infused, (breathed into the spirit) of the believer, this came about. This is the working of regeneration as a part of the salvation plan of God. This regenerative act is a part of 2 Corinthians 5:17 speaks of the “newness” the believer. What was old has passed away, and replaced with all things new. Our minds have been renewed through this divine act (Romans 12:2). We have been made alive by God’s Spirit. Old things–concepts and perceptions have been replaced with fresh spiritual enlightenment. This spiritual enlightenment is an ongoing process in the life of the believer. This renewal process began at the moment we accepted salvation. Now we are responsible to walk in the light as He is in the light on daily basis. This will help us to learn the new spiritual knowledge of Him through our growing relationship with Him.

The action God performed came through a commandment. The word “command” comes from the Greek word epo, which finds its root in a primary verb, which is used, only in the definite past tense. The other tenses of this word are borrowed from the Greek word ereo which is translated into English as say 57 times, speak 7 times, tell 4 times and speak of 2 times for a total of 71 times in the King James Version. It means to utter, to speak, or say. The other alternate form of epo is rheo, which can be understood as a pouring forth. In this divine act of God, He poured forth into the new life of the redeemed the knowledge of His glory.

God broke the silence that had existed for 400 years. All man had to go on was the laws and commandments that had been received by Moses on Mount Sinai. Since then, many more man-made laws had been added making the total number of laws 613. To break one of these laws was to break the whole law. These inconsistencies were among the many things that Jesus pointed out to his disciples. It was time for humanity to hear and receive the revealed Truth of the One True living God. It was time for them to come to the knowledge of truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ–God’s only begotten Son. It was time to set the record straight. It was time for humanity to get the true description of Who He was, and the love He had in His heart for them.

Since we have been given this knowledge, it should be understood that no man could successfully preach and be of much good if they do not have a working relationship with the Lord and His Written Word. The individual mind cannot vacillate and hesitate concerning the gospel of Jesus Christ nor did the life that must lead. When the mind is filled with doubts, there is no faith. When there is timidity in doing the work of the Lord, then the boldness that is promised has not been received. The individual who declares what he has no acquaintance with the Lord cannot be effective. If there is no deep-felt conviction concerning the words written in the Bible, then how can this individual be effective for the kingdom of heaven? There is a lack of understanding concerning what the individual affirms. How can they stand by something that they do not understand?

What then should be the standard by which to measure the effectiveness of a person’s words concerning Jesus and His gospel? This lesson teaches that there must be God-given spiritual enlightenment. The individual must be God-breathed upon in order to receive the right illumination. There are illuminations that have their source in the rulers of darkness, and then there is the true Illuminator who shines through to the heart causing a change. There must be a relationship developed through personal interaction and experience with Jesus Christ.

When photography dealer Howard Greenberg celebrated his 25th anniversary in the business last year,

When photography dealer Howard Greenberg celebrated his 25th anniversary in the business last year, he mounted an exhibition at his midtown Manhattan gallery. Amid 25 seductive highlights from his collection – including an abstract pear by Steichen, a pointillist streetscape by Karl Struss, two pieces of Americana by Walker Evans, and a print of Ruth Orkin’s An American Girl in Italy – he’d constructed a shrine to a book.

The installation made a strong case for the book’s place of honour among the dealer’s rare and expensive artifacts, with a video showing its creation, from typesetting to printing to binding, in an old-fashioned process that even Gutenberg might recognize.

The star of the 10-minute video was Michael Torosian, a Canadian little-known outside the small world of rare-book collectors. Since founding Lumiere Press in a garage at the foot of his yard in the west end of Toronto in 1986, Torosian has published 18 handmade books on photography. Printed on his vintage letter press, they are themselves works of art, limited editions in which the editorial content, design and printing is executed with an aesthete’s eye, an artisan’s hand and a perfectionist’s oversight.

Torosian’s 19th book, An American Gallery, was produced by special order for the Greenberg anniversary and includes stunning high-tech reproductions of the 25 photographs from the exhibit accompanied by the dealer’s commentaries. The book took almost 12 months to produce, slowed down only slightly by the fact that the photos had to be printed separately and then placed by hand into each copy.

Lumiere editions include three volumes on Dave Heath and one each on Lewis Hine, Edward Burtynsky, Paul Strand, Gordon Parks and others. Torosian also has published three books of his own photography work.

The title page of An American Gallery went through 53 different designs before Torosian was satisfied. The typesetting ate up half a year. He took months to figure out how to insert the photographs, which are a different thickness than a normal paper page, to ensure they didn’t cause the book to spring open awkwardly.

“You have to be focused: every day, every week, every month. You can’t just sort of go through the motions, because it’s very unforgiving,” he explains. “I guess it’s like someone who makes violins or something: There might be monetary incentive to turn out 100 violins a year, but if you can only really do 18 credibly, then you’d better stick to the 18.”

“No matter how well a conventional mass-market trade book is produced, in their nature as a physical object, they all look the same: this sort of blockish object. They’re interchangeable. But when someone picks up one of my books, it has the same pedigree as other books, and yet it’s a different species. And that’s what they’re responding to. It’s familiar but it’s outside the ordinary.” A number of Lumiere Press books are in the collections of rare-book libraries.

The Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at the State University of New York currently has a remount of the Greenberg anniversary exhibition, including the Lumiere video installation, which will stay up until June 22.

Recently I’ve been getting pissed off at some peoples attitude towards my practice. It seems they really can’t get beyond my sense of humour. To counter these problems I’ve decided to create a Servitor. To do this I have employed a technique described in Phil Hine’s Condensed Chaos (a very good book).
I’m going to describe my process although I’m going to leave out some details as I don’t want to describe exactly what the servitor does.
To begin with I created a sigil encapsulating my primary desire. I then created two other sigils. The first of these encapsulated a secondary related desire and the second encapsulated something I knew I needed to happen for the first two sigils to work. I then spent some time considering how these things could be wired together. I was literally using the form of an electrical circuit.
After working out the final form the Servitor Circuit would take, I cast it using a small ritual invoking the toilet god. I like using toilet magick because I like the way it poetically relates the physical realities of the body to the poetry of the water cycle. Also I like the idea that it’s possible to charge and cast a servitor by imbuing every molecule of your urine with it’s circuitry form and then pissing it out into the world where it will multiply through the water system to fulfil my magickal will.
I’ve scanned the circuit and attached it to this entry.
