One of the best Spanish learning sites I’ve ever tooled around on is the BBC’s interactive language program Mi Vida Loca. Truly multimedia, it’s part film, part grammar and vocabulary text, and part video game. And it’s free! The storyline is that you’ve been given the keys to a friend’s flat in Madrid, only to discover that her sister Merche is crashing there already. Merche comes off as an oddball at first—extremely paranoid, but also extremely friendly. And in order to challenge your language skills, she speaks no English. Luckily, you have a virtual friend who pops up on occasion to act as your dictionary, cultural reference, and pronunciation guide.

You quickly come to find out that Merche is a journalist working on a big story about environmental concerns with tourist developments in the Canary Islands. Her research has landed her on the wrong side of some very dangerous people, which explains her paranoia. It’s also reason enough for her to drag you around different parts of Spain. All the while, you’re put into useful situations: ordering at a restaurant, asking for directions, booking a room, renting a car, and even getting some help at a drug store (gulp!). You also sit in on a Spanish class run by one of Merche’s friends (portrayed by the BBC employee who helped developed the program), try your luck at crossword puzzles and other language games, and finish up the series with a skills exam to see how far you’ve come. And trust me, by the time you get to the end, you’ll have picked up quite a bit of Spanish. For that reason, the series is particularly good for folks preparing for a trip.

Screenshot of Merche thinking about bopping you with a frying pan.

Since the film takes place mostly in central Spain, castellano is generally used throughout. So expect to hear some “th” sounds and vosotros forms—though you do get a taste of español de Canarias in the last few episodes. And just as American and British English vary in vocabulary occasionally, the same is true for Castilian and Latin American Spanish: billete instead of boleto for instance. But that shouldn’t stop you from using this fantastic program. You’re bound to meet and speak with a Spaniard at some point in your life. Better yet, just start planning a trip to Spain! That’ll justify this course for sure.

Saying “I do”, to many, is a steep hill; a decision they cannot easily reach; for it has a potential to change their whole lives or even turn them upside down. Even though some people jump roof-high when a question prompting them into saying “I do” is pitched, it does not make it any less difficult coping with the complications and hardships that accompany such committing words…

“HELLO! Can you help me out today? I’m fundraising to go to a United Nations Conferenc

“HELLO! Can you help me out today? I’m fundraising to go to a United Nations Conference in Copenhagen! … Okay, thank you anyway! Have a good one!”

That was my constant refrain this past week. I spent a couple of days over the down at the Madeira Kroger’s (our local grocery chain) in a last-ditch attempt to fundraise some sort of meaningful cash. It wasn’t always easy going.

First, I had to share the entryway with the Salvation Army–which made me feel like a terrible person, and very self-conscious.

Next, my plans took a major hit. I set up Tuesday and was promised that I could set up on Wednesday as well (which happened to be the day before Thanksgiving) and fundraise; when I got there, they made me go home. I was ready to kill management!! I could have gotten another $250 that way. I am sure! So, I lost out on good money; they told me to come back Friday evening, after Thanksgiving, when absolutely no one wants to buy more food. This still disappoints and embitters me.

The job was not always easy, either. You had to stand right by the sliding doors in the entryway, which was sometimes very cold, and you couldn’t really sit down, lest you be overlooked. You had to jump in the face of everyone who walked in the door and beg for money (which I don’t like to do). It does teach you a few things about salesmanship and fundraising, though:

You have approximately half a second when the person walks through the sliding doors to grab their attention by saying Hello. If you do not do so, they may never notice you at all. The children generally will, but only about (I would estimate) one-in-ten adults will even glance in your direction.

You have to say hello to everyone, but there are exceptions. Some people are too busy talking on the phone or with a fellow shopper. I don’t disturb them. Some other people plow through the door like the Cavalry. I don’t disturb them either–they are clearly on a mission and in a hurry. But most people amble on through, and you must smile and say Hello to these people.

After making contact, you have another 3-5 seconds to get your message out. You must do it immediately, or you lose the momentum. You can’t possibly cram your whole mission statement into that timeframe. In my case, I recited the rather general and neutral statement at the top of this entry. Those who want to know more will then engage you, and give you a chance to talk about being a youth delegate, sustainable development, your press credentials, etc. Or, they will say “Not today” and keep on walking.

You can’t really judge a person by how they look. A lot of people really look grumpy, but you can’t let that stop you. Chances are they will smile when you address them and try to be polite.

Some folks are not polite. They outright ignore you, snap at you, or engage in some other form of rude behavior. My thoughts are that those people are afraid. They are afraid to engage or else they won’t be able to say No, or they are shy, or think you are the “lower sort”, or whatever. You can’t let it hurt your feelings, because THEY are the ones with the issue.

Not everyone has to agree with your cause to help you out. Of course some folks will not agree with you, but don’t be intimidated–most are too polite to argue. Still, even if they disagree with you or your cause, it doesn’t mean they won’t support you. One man told me climate change was all nonsense, but still chipped in $5. Someone else asked me what my stance on the United Nations was. I told him, “I think it is an excellent forum for nations to discuss their differences and try to coordinate on global issues. I certainly think the United Nations is a better idea than war.” He asked me my role there. I said, “As a youth delegate, I try to keep our lawmakers from messing things up for future generations. The Secretariat has called us the moral voice of the UN.” A Vietnam veteran, that man was convinced that the UN was a breeding ground for “communist and muslim spies”, and was not shy about telling me. But apparently he approved of the idea that discussion is better than war, and that I would be acting as a moral voice to our policymakers. He hated the UN, but he chipped in another $5 bill to help me out.

Also, it helps to know your audience. My community is overwhelmingly Republican, which is fine. But according to recent polls, only about half of Republicans think climate change is even real. I found it wise to craft my message around the United Nations, the cuteness of being a young person, and to emphasize my role as a moral voice for lawmakers and guardian for future generations. Certainly, folks who are curious will ask questions, about which you should be very open–but as a diplomat (and not an activist), I craft my speech carefully.

It’s a lot of fun once you get into it, but… I happen to hate asking for money, and I hate standing still. I could only take about two hours of it on each day. Still, I raised $137.00 and learned a few things about working a crowd, so I try not to complain too much.

Recently I was looking for something to help my reading skills when I snagged ¡Así leemos! off my wi

Recently I was looking for something to help my reading skills when I snagged ¡Así leemos! off my wife’s shelf of old Spanish textbooks. It’s a graduated Spanish reader separated into three sections: a short story, a short history of Mexico, and an adaptation of the medieval Spanish novella Lazarillo de Tormes. Each section gets progressively more difficult, in terms of grammar and vocabulary. The first section, which is the story of two high school students at the fictional Colegio Glenview, is split into six sections, each with four to six “chapters” (for lack of a better term). There are thirty chapters in total for section one, and I’m about 3/4 of the way through them.

The offending text.

The book couldn’t start off much easier; it is clearly aimed at someone who has only had a week or so of Spanish. The first sentences: “Enrique y María son amigos. Enrique es de España. Él es español.” The questions that follow the chapter are equally a breeze: “¿De qué nacionalidad es Enrique, español o estadounidense?” Er, let me see, I think he’s… But the text quickly moves forward into slightly more challenging work, though rarely departs from the present tense. Each chapter is then followed by a series of reading-comprehension questions, and every five or six chapters end in a review text and a crossword puzzle (crucigrama), which is a nice way to break up the reading.

This has nothing to do with the book. I just think it's funny: Tell me the truth, have I lost my power over men?

Now while the book has given me some practice with basic reading skills and has contributed to my vocabulary a bit, I’m looking forward to moving on to the next two sections of the book because the first story can be dreadful at times. It follows Enrique (who’s a Spaniard, if you didn’t catch that before) and his friend María, a white-bred chick who is a star in the high school Spanish program. Their friendship, of course, blossoms into more. All the while, I roll my eyes and ask myself why I picked this thing up in the first place. Masochism? The stuff that goes down at this high school is truly unbelievable. First of all, Enrique is the captain of the football team. And I’m talking American football here. Is that really possible? Do Americans studying in the UK generally excel at cricket? Are French students in Texas rodeo stars? Why couldn’t the author of this let Colegio Glenview have a soccer team instead? Enrique as the captain of that team I could see.

The colegio also has a Spanish club, Los aventureros, which is made up of native Spanish speakers (who seem to be everywhere in this town) and advanced Spanish students like María. One of their meeting places is the local Mexican restaurant El Taco. Couldn’t they have spiced that name up a little bit? How about El Taco Loco or El Gran Taco or something. Anyway, the non-native-Spanish-speaking members of the club always take part in a poetry festival that the town is famous for. Each contestant memorizes a Spanish-language poem for recitation and presents it in front of a panel of judges. Each high school that competes has its own qualification round in this way. And then the best of the best compete for the city championship. To put it another way, the small, seemingly very WASPy town of Glenview has an annual Spanish poetry recitation festival that’s the bomb. Because you know, small town America just loves the Spanish language and Spanish speakers. Oh, and you’ll never guess who wins this year. I’ll give you a hint. Her name starts with “m” and she does a beautiful rendition of José de Espronceda’s “La canción del pirata” (“Song of the Pirate”).

José de Espronceda

Okay, okay, I know what you’re thinking. Yes, the book is clearly meant for high school students (maybe even younger?). And for all the sloggishness of the story, I am getting something out of it. But don’t high students deserve a little better? Well, here’s hoping that they get it in sections two and three of the book. I’ll report back later.

There hasn’t been any “copying and pasting of news” this week – it’s been a busy one with a lot of deadlines. It’ll return come Monday. I also went to the launch on Baker Street last night of Trading Places, a new book by award-winning photographer and all-round good chap Steve Bloom. Also my dad. So that’s why posts have been scant: but it’s Friday, so I thought I’d cheer you all up with a few tips on how to survive the Christmas do…

The Christmas party: that perfect time to let your hair down and throw your reputation to the winds. What other time of year can you mock your boss, flirt with your co-workers and dance in your knickers, all at once?

But as legions of office drones know, that opportunity comes with a priceless hangover.

A good story was told by Adam, of High Street, Cardiff city centre. Things went wrong at his old job when fire fighters got more than they bargained for in a call-out.

Adam said: “My old work, a now-defunct bank, had a Christmas party in the office in 2003. There was a buffet, an awards ceremony for the year’s work, and karaoke machine, with added smoke machine.

“So the party was in full swing, people singing, people dancing and the smoke machine smoking. After about two hours of this, some men dressed in fireman outfits arrived at the office. Some of the female staff – including managers – assumed these were strippers.

“They started, well, gyrating around the men, trying to take off their ‘outfits’. The thing is though, they were actual firemen: the smoke machine had set the alarms off.

“Not surprisingly, that was the last Christmas party we were given in that office.”

So how does the humble worker bee prevent getting into pickles like these? Here are some ideas. Which type are you?

FOR THE NEW GUY

You have got to be extra-careful. For you have just entered a parallel world, in which your every move will be scrutinised to fit with the ‘banter’ of man-all-man employees who’ve been spending longer with each other than their wives for several decades.

So if you’ve been waiting for that perfect time to share your secret love of musicals, discuss French theatre, come out as gay or, worse, as a vegan, your first Christmas party isn’t it.

And beware, because it will seem like a good idea when you’re nine pints down and standing on the table without trousers or dignity.

Instead the best policy is cower in the corner, if possible with other trainees, and talk about ludicrously safe subjects.

Think along the lines of cars, ties (not shoes), bitter (not lager) and possibly politics, but make sure you tow the standard line: “Just how bad is that Gordon Brown?” Or you could stick to the ergonomic management keyboard:

FOR THE NEW GIRL

You’re over here. The punch is over there. In the middle is overweight Gwyn from accounts who always puts himself deliberately between you and the photocopier so you have to squeeze past.

This should be as good a hint as any not to drink anything. You’re young, fresh-faced, intelligent and unknown to you most people in the office are competing to be you, or worse, especially in Gwyn’s case.

So if they get you drunk, you’ll slowly turn into them: following the downward course until spring, when someone even younger and prettier comes in and sure enough, you want to be her.

Or, worse, you’ll canoodle in the corner with lovestruck Gwyn who, come 2010, will make sure he’s not only blocking the photocopier, but also the vending machine, water cooler and door.

But you’ve not got the same option as the New Guy. You can’t lurk in the corner with the fairer sex and a G&T, because unlike office guys, who mumble into their pints and keep eyes on ties, office girls will make sure they’re heard.

So it’s a no-go, especially if they have any gossip on Gwyn. The best bet is to flirt briefly with everything in the room – and walk away with your head held high.

FOR THE SAD HACK IN THE CORNER

You’re the only person older than the boss, so to rub in the fact you didn’t succeed even more you’ll be asked to toast him/her. If you’re sober, this will be an excellent exercise in brown-nosing. If you’re not, it’ll be an exercise in damage limitation.

You will be inclined to make a cruel joke. Do not bend to this temptation. It will probably come out wrong, meaning after 26 years of the same old story at the office do, you’ll be repeating yourself again in the new year. Someone else will get that promotion, and you’ll be stuck counting down the days on your free calendar to the next party.

You’ll also be inclined to do your famous boss-impression. Unfortunately, its fame is probably due to an in-joke among your younger colleagues, and isn’t actually funny. Plus, impressions at office dos are seldom better than that dance Ricky Gervais did in The Office. Often, they’re worse.

So don’t do it. And especially, please, don’t try and impersonate Ricky Gervais. Just no.

FOR THE BOSS

Finally, if you’re the boss and you’ve not been told about the office party, it could be a surprise do for you.

Be prepared to walk through that door after ‘urgent business’ calls you in to be greeted with party poppers and bubbly by the whole staff. By the time they’ve finished stroking your ego you won’t be able to get your head through the door.

But it more likely means you’ve not been invited.

So a word of caution: have a good think about how well-liked you are. Do you bend, bad breath and all, over the hunched shoulders of your well-meaning employees and whine you-could-probably-do-this advice in their ears?

Do you give motivational speeches standing on tables where you use star-charts and words like “self-fulfilment”? Do you keep everyone on past 5.30pm in the name of “building a community spirit”?

If any of these things apply to you, you are probably one of those Hated Bosses you’ve heard so much about. Your best bet would be to stay at home with your kids. They’re too young to realise how irritating you are yet.

Just one look at Djimon Hounsou’s 2007 Calvin Klein Underwear ad campaign would render most women speechless. His chiselled chocolate frame was featured on billboards around the world and no doubt were responsible for holding up traffic as women stepped out of their cars to get a better look. The model turned actor is more than just a gorgeous face. He has starred in movies like Gladiator, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life and Never Back Down.

So I’m level 37 now, and it sure as hell wasn’t that easy to get there. But it wasn’t hard either! Now I’ve learned a few things during my gameplay (ain’t stopping yet though), the most important of said things being : never camp. Camping only has a temporary advantage. You can pick off one or two enemies heading in your direction, but once they know of your position they will use a more tactical approach and you will inevitably die. So the first order of business is to keep moving around : but that doesn’t mean that you should let your guard down! No! Always be vigilant and watch your back. If a teammate is in your front, cover the both of your six. If a teammate has a riot shield, take cover behind him. Always keep an eye out for camping spots, and never leave yourself exposed too much in open areas. Use a smoke grenade to protect yourself from snipers if possible.

The second most important thing is never to use the same weapon once you unlocked most of its features. That way, your experience gained will be drastically reduced. Be diverse, and don’t be like a sprayer. You’ll find that the most common sprayer uses an AUG-HBAR, because that’s the easiest weapon to use in the game. It also packs quite a punch and can take out a noob sniper. Always be varied in choosing your weapons, and make sure you use the right perks for the type of class you need. I always go for unlocking the heartbeat sensor as I feel that is absolutely IMBA. I always use the ninja perk to avoid being detected myself, no matter what class.

The third most important thing are killstreak rewards that are dropped by helicopter. I’ve found out that in 50% of my matches I never used them because I simply didn’t have enough time and I was to immersed in the action to call them. So yeah, never waste your rewards, especially your care package, as it’s the best reward in my opinion.

What else can I tell you? Even if you’re in the lobby and you don’t like a specific map, the vote to skip fails and the match will start, don’t leave! Because every single game has its reward, and getting into a new lobby is very tedious, no thanks to the PS3 peer-to-peer system.

By the way, here’s a comparison I found somewhere on the internet between MW1 and MW2
