This T-Day I’m taking a minute to watch Terri Clark (who is looking better than ever I must say) and her video for “Gypsy Boots”!  After randomly walking around in the desert for a while (that will burn up the calories!!!  hmmm?), Terri decides to take a break and dreams of gettin’ back to her roots!!  After hanging out with a band of hippies and tellin’ her man “audios”, she mysteriously wakes up with a kickin’ new pair of boots!  I want to have that dream too!  I give this video a 5…it made me a little sea-sick!

Headbanging while making fire!

Director and producer Grant Heslov brings a psychedelic, drug-induced comedic outlook at life with “Men Who Stare at Goats.”

The film is about reporter Bob Wilton(Ewan McGregor) at a ho-hum newspaper and who is fed up with the dullness of his life. After interviewing a local man claiming to be a former “psychic soldier” and his wife leaving him for an one-armed man, Wilton jets off to the Middle East in search of his next big story. Wilton is convinced he should produce stories as a war correspondent, but is often left behind. One evening at a hotel restaurant he encounters Lyn Cassady(George Clooney), a strange figure who says he’s part of a secret U.S. military wing called the New Earth Army. This unit is described as “warrior monks” who fight war with their minds by using psychic abilities, can pass through solid walls and stop goats heartbeats by staring at them. Are you lost yet?

Wilton is intrigued and follows Cassady into the desert on a mission that Cassady isn’t even sure of. It is slowly revealed to the audience the two are tracking Cassady’s former psychic teacher Bill Django(Jeff Bridges). They must also battle the psychic warrior who made the entire unit fall apart, Larry Hooper(Kevin Spacey).

Viewing the trailer at another film, I thought this film looked really intriguing. It has a great assortment of cast (McGregor, Clooney and Spacey). After watching it, it seemed like two hours of torture. The storyline started out normal enough until Wilton met Cassady. The events of the duo seem too strange to believe, or even comprehend at times. In one scene, Wilton and Cassady are driving through the desert when Cassady says he is “cloud bursting” to keep himself in shape. He stares at a large, puffy cloud and it disburses before his eyes. A few second later, Cassady hits a large rock along the highway when there was nothing else to hit. Another instance is when Django promotes the use of LSD and marijuana so the New Army can “free themselves” from the world. A lot of people have used LSD, but really?

I had trouble engaging with the story and keeping my attention focused on the film. The plot was very jerky and disconnected.

The Hippie counterculture that started out in the 1960’s was more than just a movement advocating peace and freedom. What started out as a peaceful protest against the established societal norms and political arena that was in place, became an entire lifestyle that the hippies lived out from waking to sleeping, and from head to toe.

A lot of people followed the hippie movement. Some were motivated to become hippies themselves, while some found their views and how they expressed them quite interesting. Even if some were not exactly that passionate about what the hippies lived for, the hippie trend still managed to catch on. From long-haired men, to vegetarians, and to odd clothes, a lot of people soon had a bit of a hippie in them.

Although the hippie statement about breaking free from society and pursuing liberation and peace was the movement’s main theme, it became easy for people to know hippies more popularly because of their odd way of dressing and conducting themselves. Because of their rather eccentric clothes, they stood out quite starkly from the crowd. This is why the term “hippie” would often bring to mind a long-haired person, clad in sandals or sometimes even barefoot, wearing colorful tie-dyed shirts, a vest, bell-bottom pants, and several other accessories. For the ladies, the picture may also consist of colorful peasant blouses and long, full skirts.

These fashion threads have now been modernized and are accepted by the fashion world. Bell-bottom pants are now a worldwide hit. What used to be trendy back in the past, and went out of the trend for a long time, is now the “it” pair of jeans nowadays. The long, full skirts of the hippie women are now an option for any woman who wants to go feminine. The skirts are now designed in new and creative ways, using different fabrics, and come in various designs and colors. The peasant blouses are also a worldwide success. The blouses are even extended to become peasant dresses by maintaining its basic design. The blouses now come in many different varieties, colors, designs, just as long as it does not lose the basic peasant look. The tie dye trend is also now used in a variety of garments. T-shirts, tank tops, skirts, dresses, sundresses, hats, and even underwear are now tie-dyed. The mix of bright colors has made tie-dyed garments popular especially during the summer season.

Due to the wide fashion arena that accepts almost everything as a fashion statement, no matter how weird a piece of clothing may look at first, fashion can make it seem trendy and beautiful in the long run. As the hippie fashion threads caught on, people begun to look at them as strong fashion statements – eccentric and unique clothes that stood out from the crowd and was closely associated with freedom of expression. A lot of people, especially those who wanted to be unique, embraced the trend fully.

Up to the present, some modern-day hippies still wear the same odd clothes. But they’re not so odd anymore, because they’ve become part of the fashion mainstream. Some who wear the getup are possibly not true-blue hippies at all. We also see a lot of movie roles who sport the hippie getup. It has also somehow become a stereotype, because of the popularity it obtained.

However, no matter how commercialized the hippie fashion statement may get, in truth, it is still closely linked with hippie values. After all, when a hippie getup is seen, it is still known as “the hippie getup”. And it still epitomizes what the hippies stood for. Freedom from restrictions and of self-expression, in that they sported long, unkempt-looking hair without caring what other people may think. Liberation and opposition of the corporate pillars in place, in that they often made their own clothes and went barefoot. Peace and love, in that they use cheerful, bright colors that show off a peaceful, positive outlook in a beautifully free life.

Die Newcomerin Saint Lu beendet nun endlich die „Rock-Powerfrau“-Durststrecke! Lockige Mähne, die Arme voller Armreifen, den Hals voller Ketten, schicke Boots an den Füßen, großen Ringe an den Finger und ein unglaubliches Stimmorgan: Saint Lu verkörpert den puren, alten, dreckigen Rock! Bei dieser Beschreibung der neuen Sängerin am Rockhimmel vermutet man eins wohl gar nicht: Saint Lu ist eine waschechte Österreicherin!

Luise Gruber (aka Saint Lu) wuchs in einem kleinen Dorf in Oberösterreich auf (Nähe Wels) und wusste schon mit 8 Jahren, dass sie Musikerin werden wollte: „Meine erste eigene CD war Janis Joplin. Als ich die mit acht bekam, habe ich sofort entschlossen, dass ich Sängerin werden will. Ich habe in meiner eigenen kleinen Welt gelebt. Wir hatten ganz wenige Nachbarn und ich konnte rumschreien, was das Zeug hält und habe Zuhause meine Performances hingelegt. Meine Eltern waren wirklich froh, als ich dann auch öffentliche Auftritte hatte und nicht mehr so viel Zuhause gemacht habe.“ Zu ihren Musik-Vorbildern zählen neben Janis Joplin auch Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin und Big Mama Thornton.

Im Teeniealter gründete sie eine Band, ging mit 18 nach Amerika und studierte dann auf einer Schauspielschule. Ihren Traum mit Musik durchzustarten wollte sie dennoch nicht begraben. Bei der Castingshow “Starmania” versuchte sie ihr Glück. Es klappte nicht. Trotzdem nahm Saint Lu eine Demo-CD auf und verschickte diese an zahlreiche Produzenten. Patrick Majer (Echo-Gewinner & Produzent von “Wir sind Helden”, “No Angels”, Nina Hagen, “Rosenstolz”, usw.) wurde auf die hübsche und vor allem talentierte Rockröhre aufmerksam und lud sie nach Berlin ein. Dort blieb sie bis heute.

Letzten Freitag kam Saint Lu’s Debütalbum auf den Markt. Die erste Single heißt “Don’t miss your own life” und der Vergleich mit Superstars wie Anastacia und Janis Joplin drängt sich beim Hören des Songs automatisch auf. Im Video spielt Saint Lu das Engelchen und Teufelchen.

Die Streicher des Songs wurden übrigens in den legendären Londoner Abbey Road Studios eingespielt - in diesem Interview plaudert Saint Lu über diese wunderbare Erfahrung, ihr Album, ihr Leben, usw.!

Ich bin völlig begeistert von Saint Lu – sie hat das Zeug die Rocklandschaft ordentlich aufzumischen, internationale Erfolge verbuchen zu können und ihre zeitlosen, aber trotzdem zeitgemäßen Songs der breiten Maße schmackhaft zu machen. Ihre rauchige, leidenschaftliche Stimme geht ins Ohr und ihre sympathische Art verzaubert!

Em seus versos há críticas diretas e indiretas sobre a ditadura no Brasil.

Infelizmente, com o AI – 5 aprovado em dezembro do mesmo ano, e Médici “eleito” no ano seguinte, muitos artistas foram exilados, inclusive Caetano e Gil.

A ditadura trouxe muitas coisas ruins para o país, mas, de um modo otimista foi a razão para essas músicas serem feitas. Então, se não houvesse ditadura, não haveria essas músicas.

Esse é um disco fundamental, tanto para a história em sí, quanto para a história da música brasileira.

Vale lembrar que, com sua psicodelia herdada dos Beatles pós Revolver, a tropicália foi pré-cursora do rock nacional. Se não fosse por eles, a maioria das bandas de rock brasileiro nem teria existido e, se tivesse, seria bem diferente, em todos os sentidos.

Lucy Walsh, 26 anos. E aí, alguma explicação?

Med tanke på min sitargalna pappa och musikintresserade/kultur/indien/afrikagalna mamma borde jag vara rena rama kulturgeniet.

 Jag borde i alla fall kunna lira gitarr utan problem och böja ihop några skulpturer.

 Det enda jag har fått av dem i kulturväg är långa pianofingrar (som bara spelar kallejohansson men helst vill spela The Sacrifice) och ett rätt formbart gummiansikte som passar bra i skådespeleri.

Jag har försökt lite. Jag har målat nakna kvinnor och satt upp på vägen. En är gravid med ett regnbågsbarn och en annan går ner i vattnet för att dränka sig, med en kattbjällra i handen.

 Båda är nertagna på befallning av pappa och ex.

 Så att jag nu sitter och väljer att tjollra ner bröst på ett granatäpple härstammar från mina hippieföräldrar. Men att jag ska ge bort den i åka-tillbaka-till-usa present det vetifan vad det härstammar ifrån. En frisjäl långt bak i Ul Alam släkten? Farfar kanske?

I have this recurring hippie commune fantasy. In it, we and several other families live in intentional community with lots of land that we farm organically. We communally own some livestock that we raise, drinking raw milk and gathering the day’s eggs from the chicken coop and whipping up a nice peach pie to bring to the potluck after Sunday services.

It’s like that scene in Witness where the whole community gets together for a barn-raising. I like the idea of having work before me to do that is physical: here is a field that needs plowing. And then when I’m done plowing it, I can see that it’s plowed. I guess in my fantasy we’re all quasi-Amish.

But here’s the rub. I like my computer. And even though I can walk to work, I need to have a car. Most of the way we live our lives is made possible by people who stopped plowing fields long ago. I don’t think that everything invented after 1800 is bad, but in many respects, I do think living the simple life is living a better life.

My questions to you, oh Man Blog readers, are these:

Would we all be better off living more like the Amish?

Is anything like my hippie commune fantasy even possible?

I ate soup to day. The worst soup experience of my life. We had to pay and leave quickly because the smell was horrible.

Think the bottom of the sea scraped up and boiled. yummy. And they insisted it was vegan, I don’t believe them.  It was hilarious and we laughed our way out of there.

Laughing is good for you, soup is sometimes good for you, life is best lived strong and true.

Yesterday I saw the The Devil Wears Prada live, and it was really good. People where jumping around, moshing(my online dictionary insist that this is not a word?), and stage diving. Never seen anyone stage dive at John Dee. There where tons of Oliver Sykes look a likes there. hehe. There where also two men who where half naked appearing on stage.  They disspeared backstage after awhile.

I think I see a fringecore/metalcore wednsday in the future, if John Dee keeps on booking. Please do, it’s so fun. I will love them booking people there for ever.

Today is my mothers birthday. I made her a cake with candles. There were presents too. She is an amazing lady. This is one of my favourite pictures of her. It was taken when she was around my age. What a hippie.

This weekend was cool. I had dinner at Maxwell’s with Alexis, Mimi and Elizabeth. Then we went over to Marc’s to throw imaginary snowballs at him/ show him our hippie fossils. It was nice lil reunion. I’m going to miss you, Alexis! <3 I wish I could just go with you haha

Shameful Designs

It was so nice out on Sunday. Terry and I hung out in my yard. I started working on a paper mache-ed Rosie =)

After it got alittle chilly, we went over to hang at the Real Deal Radio studio. Like always, it was cool seeing them!

Vanessa, Mandy and I were at the Wendy Williams Show on Monday!

It was HILARIOUS. We had a lot of fun =D

All of a sudden, they wanted everyone on the stage dancing haha I think they were trying to wake us all up. It was 8 in the morning! Ya know, “get the juices flowin’”…

Then a dance contest! Haha

I kept saying this dude looked like Obama… Do you think so??? I still do!

She was so funny. Afterwards, we got some food at Schnipper’s in Times Square. Vanessa had a point, it’s kinda like Shake Shack
