Since 2004, Podcasts have become a permanent member of the iTunes community as well as a revolutiona

Since 2004, Podcasts have become a permanent member of the iTunes community as well as a revolutionary resource for artists, journalists, and various experts and influencers to showcase their knowledge and abilities to the awaiting audience. A ‘podcast’ is a series of digital files, most commonly found in the form of MP3, that are released episodically and are downloadable on various websites and portals. These podcasts are usually associated with a theme, host, or company (ESPN, for example).

Indie musicians and artists attempt to produce music without corporate interference or influence, which causes them to search for new and innovative ways to advertise and publicize their music. Podcasting allows for indie artists to target their niche audience and play to wants and needs of their fans and followers. Interestingly enough, it’s often journalists and record labels that will solicit the songs and information from the artists. The artists are able to retain the benefits of a public appearance, which would usually be coordinated by the record label/public relations department, essentially allowing them to stay independent and produce the music they want.

M.I.A in Concert

The indie music community is full of podcasters and their appreciation for music, which they translate into a contemporary prose-style mini radio show. On his blog, Jeff Caylor, a small time indie musician, describes what he believes to be the top 10 indie music podcasts. Normally I would compile my own list but Jeff did a great job in ranking and describing, in minimal words, the purpose and theme of each podcast. I’ve provided the list below:

“10 Indie Music Podcasts

If you’re looking for a new podcast or just some new music, check out one of these and support independent music!

Insomnia Radio – Tight, award-winning podcast with frequent updates and lots of good music. Tagline is “the best music you’ve never heard.”

MPR Current Song of the Day – Short but sweet: song of the day from Minnesota Public Radio. Indie stuff and unreleased songs.

Indiefeed – Great new music, one song at a time. The podcast has some nice production value as well–less talk more rock. And if you don’t like rock, try the Hip Hop or Pop flavors. Enjoyable way to find new stuff. TIP: when the page loads, you can scroll down to the cassette tape flash player to stop the music.

Amplified Podcast – Fun, sorta homegrown podcast with bi-coastal hosts. Frequency is fairly sporadic. Good music here, though. Format is hosted throughout with eight songs a week.

Indie911.com – Canadian Indie music. Good production again and good music.

The Fader is an indie music magazine. The podcast has a good variety of music in all genres.

If your style is eclectic and world, check out The Sound Culture. They feature electronica, world, reggae, dub and hip hop.

Even the BBC is hip to the Indie music scene. Check out Radio 1’s Unsigned features some of the best unsigned acts in the UK.

GarageBand.com provides a simple indie music podcast. They call it the song of the week and you can subscribe via RSS, so I’m adding it to the list. It’s just a song attached to a feed, but they are featuring some good music. There’s actually a feed for each musical genre, so the song of the week is actually 10 or 12 songs of the week.

The Timpodcast focuses on the Toronto independent music scene and there’s some great music here. Production is decent and the host is good.”

My personal favorite happens to be Indiefeed. Indiefeed serves single song episodes designed to target specific audiences. They produce podcasts in various musical genres within the indie community, they include: Alternative/Modern Rock, Performance, Blues, Hip-Hop, Indie Pop, Electronica, and Dance. Listeners can tune in via website, indiefeed.com, or download podcasts on iTunes. Indiefeed describes their intentions and reason for producing podcasts for the public, “Become the trusted, reliable source for new music on the internet, create an equitable promotion model that grants bargaining and financial power to artists, and gives control and meaningful choice to consumers.” This sort of mission statement is incredibly important for maintaining the relationship between artist and organization, as well ensuring that the music be free of influence. Only music, no strings attached.

The following Indiefeed podcast focuses on Papercuts new song “Future Primitive” (although, not so new anymore). This is a great example of a short, yet informative and focused podcast where the music is truly the center of attention. The audience is able to have an “experience” with the song, which then translates into awareness and interest for the artist. A win-win situation for all parties involved—an essential for social media success.

I am looking though this pics trying to understand why these people are so starved for attention. And news flash, Pabst Blue Ribbon is pussy beer.

I was a rave kid myself so I have seen some crazy shit and I wore the beads and 60″ pants with stars, the whole 9. That was weekend shit though. Come Monday everything was semi back to normal. Plus ravers liked to be clean. Dirtiness doesn’t look pretty on acid.

I feel like these kids are making asses of themselves, especially the guys. Don’t these boys know the hazards of wearing super tight pants? Oh well, maybe these guys don’t need to procreate anyways. I find it amazing these guys can get laid at all.

These “hipsters” are using these crazy outfits to distract from who they really are. Trying to act like they are broke as hell in their $30 leggings and $200 hobo coats. I’ll be glad when this fad is over so I maybe I will be able to tell if that was a guy or a girl who just made my coffee.

I have a fascination with the obscure. I would say I’m on top of internet memes, from Raptor Jesus to Tay Zonday and beyond. It’s no surprise that I stumbled upon Tim and Eric’s Awesome Show: Great Job! and fell in love.

Eric Wareheim

The show is comprised of a number of uncomfortable sketches. To the unsuspecting viewer it seems like public-access television gone horribly, horribly wrong.

A huge surprise to me, Eric Wareheim, the show’s co-founder is a hipster at heart. Even weirder, he’s directed music videos for the likes of MGMT, Depeche Mode, Ben Folds, and even Maroon 5.

The videos are amazing. I didn’t know they were by Wareheim when I saw the videos, but I had my suspicions pretty quickly. The flashing colours, weirdo cast, and intensely hallucinogenic properties.

My personal favourite is a tad explicit but I’ll link it right here:

Major Lazer “Pon De Floor” from Eric Wareheim on Vimeo.

And his newest video, also for Major Lazer,

Major Lazer “Keep it Going Louder” from Eric Wareheim on Vimeo.

There’s another video by Flying Lotus that’s a lot more explicit (if you can call it that), there’s animated coitus so don’t watch it if you’re at work.

Highlights of my first Critical Mass:
I ran into a bike cop. Head first. He asks me if I was OK, then looks at me with a straight face
and says “Really? I MEAN REALLY?”
Also, flat, about 10 miles in. Thank you Eric. You saved my night. Twice. However, while fixing my flat, I missed
riding through department stores at the mall.
Thirty miles total, top speed 36, fucking awesome kick ass alleycat scramble without a prize at the end. Way to make that
Leader frame look good. Fucking hipsters. Could have been worse.
-10 for the locals that drove there.

Consensus:
“San Diego Critical Mass”= proof bikes are a viable means of looking cool.
“Critical Pass”= pathetic reason to drive somewhere to unload your car to sit around while everyone is
gone riding to drink beer. You drove for this?!
“Nice bike”= you’re hot, and kicking my ass on this hill.

Not content to just read theologians you’ve never heard of, the young reformed folk also enjoy listening to music you’ve never heard of before. There are a number of ways we bring these fresh new sounds to the unregenerate masses. Some of them are Twitter, Blogs, and Facebook – all of which are linked to our Last.fm accounts. The most popular forms of obscure music come from the indie, hipster, and neo-folk/bluegrass genres, which are themselves obscure.

Were the reformers to actually perform exorcisms they would surely do so on anyone who listens to Lady GaGa, any former American Idol winner, or CCM.

Through the foreknowledge of God, you were chosen before the ages to enjoy better music. Plug in those fancy earbuds and crank up that iPod to Volcano Choir while reading Kuyper’s Lectures on Calvinism.

As if my platonic problems couldn’t get weirder… Me and the hipster are friends. I think

As if my platonic problems couldn’t get weirder…

Me and the hipster are friends.

I think he still believes it was a mutual thing. He probably tells his friends, “Well, we didn’t really break up. We just both aren’t really ready. Plus I’m sooo busy.” Oh please.

I’m fine with being friends. He’s much easier to handle. Now I can endlessly banter while “It’s Always Sunny” is on and I don’t have to plate his food. I can tell him in all honesty that he wants a 1950s housewife and he can laugh. He got drunk the other night and texted me — “I think you’re a great girl. I’d like to keep dating you.”
Um, nice one. I mean, I’m totally in love with you so just say the word and I’ll jump in the wagon. Buddy– I DUMPED YOU. Would you like me to order a fancy stamp and punch you in the forehead? Jesus.

I texted him back and it felt so good. “I’d like to be friends”.

The next morning he pleads the fifth. Of course, he thinks the ball’s in his court. I also mentioned this since my newfound bluntness is oddly exhilarating, “So you think you can just TELL me to date you, eh? I think you’re supposed to ask a girl.” He finds this amusing and tries to weasel out of his faux-pas but whatever.

We play scrabble via iPhone app everyday. It’s kinda creepy. He also has started to be oddly fascinated by who I am, as a person. GASP. He asks me questions like, do you sew?… do you want a pet? …Why don’t you like [token indie band]?

What I’ve realized about myself in this incredibly confusing and depressing process we call dating, is that we don’t spend enough time getting to know each other. If I have to be romantic on the first date, it’s so much pressure! It’s gonna be years before you see me air guitar or put straws in my nose — common occurrences for many of my friends. Whatever happened to courtship?

I’ve decided to stop dating for now and to stop building this wall. All women have this idea about how we have to be to date. We can’t be overbearing or too invested. We must be confident and sexual. However, we can’t date other people, then we’re sluts. And we can’t be too shy, then we’re just boring.

We’re not allowed to fall in love.

I’m sick of dumbing myself down or being belittled. Fix your own damn plate, I’m gonna go sing to some Britney. Yeah I said it, Britney Spears.

If I know one thing it’s that girls who only shop at Victoria’s Secret for the bras/panties/sexy lingerie are really missing out. That Vicki has a lot more to offer than lacy underthings that make your boobs look huge; Victoria’s Secret is also an awesome place to stock up on clothes, shoes and beauty products. They even have jeans that give your butt some lift!

VS is truly a one-stop-shop for all your girlie needs and the best news is, you can find things within your college gal budget (i.e. under $20). Shop on, ladies. Shop on!

Henley sweaters are a casual and comfy way to keep cozy this season, and not only is this on sale for $19, but you get a free scarf with your purchase as well! Score!

Ok, so technically this set of bras isn’t under $20, but it’s 2 bras for $32, which brings each down to only $16 a pop. (That’s only $8 a boob!) Where can you find a deal like that on good quality comfy bras? Nowhere.

Lip gloss should always be in your purse and with a 5 for $20 deal on all Victoria’s Secret makeup, you can stock up on a whole bunch of items that’ll help ya look lovely. Seriously, the VS makeup is really great quality stuff and I highly recommend loading up.

Leggings are my go-to during winter months; they tuck into boots fabulously, look adorable with oversized sweaters, and for those really cold days, you can put them under your jeans. VS has these that are 2/$20 and come in a wide array of colors. I definitely plan on stocking up (no pun intended).

No, I don’t know why this girl is wearing pajamas to go bike riding in a prairie, but I do know that when you’re looking for comfort, the Pink collection is the way to go. These pants are great for lounging in your dorm, at home during the holidays, or when you need to run out to get a Gatorade on a Saturday morning.

I happen to think that sweaters are totes cute and I always look forward to sweater weather. And this sweater is one of the reasons why. I love the turtleneck, sleeve length and button details, and at $15, you can’t go wrong.

These panties manage to pull off sweet & sexy at the same time, and the hipster and cheeky cut will do wonders for your tush. With so many cute prints/colors to choose from, I’d be hard-pressed to find a reason not to grab up multiple pairs…

Wrap tops are flattering on every figure and do a great job of accentuating your curves. Mix that perk with the fact that this cotton top will be comfortable enough to wear to lecture and sexy enough to wear for a girls’ night out and you’ve got yourself the perfect addition to your fall/winter wardrobe!

P.S. If you shop today, you can take an extra 20% off one item! Let’s all give thanks to our new BFF, Victoria!

Gensidig velsignelse
