Runyon Canyon Park

We all know that Runyon Canyon Park is THE hiking spot in Hollywood for a little bit of exercise with a small side of seeing and being seen. Regardless of its popularity, we can’t ignore it as one of LA’s best hiking options in center city. This 130 acre park of urban wilderness is the perfect escape from the city smells and noises without having to venture east or west for an entire day trip. With several levels of wide, clear paths through the canyon, there’s a great choice for everyone!

On this particular day, we jetted out to North Fuller Avenue and Hillside Avenue in Hollywood, just north of Hollywood Boulevard and west of La Brea Avenue. Parking was a challenge, but we found something just below the main entrance of the park after a few circles around the block. Don’t get discouraged! There are three ways to enter Runyon Canyon: two entrances at the bottom of the park in the South, and one at the top, in the North. There are also three levels of trails to choose from depending on how much you desire to sweat. If it’s your first time, go with the most eastward path – it’s steep, but it isn’t a mountain – this is the trail featured in this post.

Runyon Canyon doesn’t provide much shade, but is canine friendly with on-leash and off-leash designated areas. As you begin the hike, you’ll see some beautiful mixed native plants. Head through the first ravine and you’ll begin one of several climbs, at the top known as Cloud’s Rest, you’ll find a picturesque scene of Los Angeles. Next up, the stairs! These broken, wooden, but reliable stairs, are steep. Be prepared, but ignore the hardcore athletes that jog up them, past you, like it’s a Sunday morning stroll. Your reward at the top: Inspiration Point.

Runyon Canyon Park

Once you’ve reached the Point, the hill levels out a bit and you can choose to head back down to complete the circle, or there is another trail to the north that will lead you around homes and to a higher crest. If you begin to wind down through the canyon, the entire hike will be approximately 1.5 miles, with a steep incline.

Runyon Canyon Park definitely strives to create a community within Hollywood, which we can agree is a challenge. At the exit, you’ll find plenty of flyers for organized yoga and hikes in the park,  bootcamp challenges and massage therapy too. The ultimate sign of neighborliness though, must be the honor system snack bar. Drop a dollar for each item and you can have a quick bite and a refuel on water with no hassle. No joke, there is nobody monitoring the stand. That morning, we witnessed several honest patrons quenching their thirst with bottles of water.

Looking for a stretch of Silver Lake that is still under the radar? Don’t think it exists? We’re here to tell you it does. Just below Santa Monica Boulevard, where Sunset Junction commences, is the unassuming Hoover street. Between Clinton and Middlebury, as you head down Hoover, you’ll start to stumble across some hidden treasures. Need coffee? Not dressed for the scenes at LAMill or Intelligentsia? Stop by Cafecito Organico for some of the best grounds in town, minus the show.

What really brought me to Hoover Street was the saturday evening soiree that my dear friend Lu Davis was throwing at her (and friend Jen’s) vintage boutique - Hamptons Heartbreak.  While one could drown in the vintage offerings of Los Angeles, this shop stands apart with a smart, succinct collection curated by these two fabulous females. With her bi-coastal schedule, Lu scopes the east and west coasts to find the best recycled fashions gushing with the relaxed, sexy vibe of her own lifestyle. Pairing these treasures with a small capsule of emerging accessories designers from Brooklyn (by Scosha) to LA (by Copperpeace), Hamptons Heartbreak knocks it out of the park.

Gene Autry National Center

We’ve covered some of Griffith Park already and will continue to do so, as there is an abundance of things to discover in LA’s most beautiful park. This time, we’ve headed out on another hike! It’s a completely flat trail that runs about 3 miles around a section of the Harding Municipal Golf Course. Known as the Equestrian Trail, you’ll rarely spot a horse along the way, but will cross runners and plenty of dog walkers. We began our journey at the Autry National Center’s lawn. If you have some time, definitely plan to check out the museum. It’s a hidden gem of Los Angeles, with a vast collection of western and southwest art, along with a wonderful farmer’s market every saturday morning.

A portion of the path runs along I-5, but the majority of the trail leads you on the outside of the golf greens which is very peaceful. Watch out for errant golf balls! Kidding. President Richard Nixon Library

On this President’s Day, we wanted to highlight a certain president who was born and raised in Southern California. Our 37th President of the United States, Richard Milhous Nixon, grew up on the lemon ranch of his parents, in a house his father built in Yorba Linda, California. At this exact location, as the house still stands, is now the Nixon Presidential Library and Museum. Whether he’s one of your favorite historical figures or not, the museum offers a fascinating look back at some of the country’s most controversial events: Vietnam War, Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty, Environmental Protection Agency and Watergate.

The Nixon Museum & Library is not only the birthplace and final resting place for he and former First Lady Pat Nixon, but it also holds countless articles and items form his travels and life at every stage. Nixon served as a Congressman, Senator, and Vice President before defeating George McGovern in 1972 to become President.

The Watergate scandal is definitely the major part of Nixon’s legacy and is highlighted in its own exhibit at the museum. But while that and his resignation may overshadow his presidency, Nixon also achieved great things with foreign relations, especially regarding China and the Soviet Union. The gardens and landscape of the museum are worth a visit too.

We’re all for adding a little romance to the everyday and there’s no better day to make that happen than Valentine’s Day. Here are a few suggestions for trails that will inspire some hand-holding and maybe even a little more…bring a blanket just in case!

-Griffith Observatory -

Griffith park offers a vast array of  varying levels, but the most romantic should include the Griffith Observatory. From dawn to dusk, the observatory offers beautiful views (and sunsets) from way above the park. From the parking lot, there is a medium level hike to the Mount Hollywood Summit. If you begin or end at Trails Cafe, there’s a collection of steep hills that will take you to the entrance of the observatory as well. While in the park, I’d also suggest a quick jaunt over to the carousel for some added canoodling.

-Descanso Gardens -

Romance will instantly blossom as you step inside these lush botanical gardens. There’s so much to explore at Descanso with individual gardens dedicated to roses, lilacs, camellias and a California garden, showcasing the native plants of our great state. Be sure to wander over to the tranquil Japanese garden for a classic tea ceremony.

-Ernest Debs Park -

This little known park is a quiet and secluded area between Pasadena and Highland Park. There are low-impact hikes throughout the hills, great views of the foothills and coastal sage brush and native grasses abound, but be sure to make it uphill to discover the small lake atop the park. The National Audubon Society operates an environmental and conservation education center on the premise with free interpretive displays and activities.

-Will Rogers State Park -

This 186-acre retreat is perfect for romantic hikers as the three-mile loop ends at  Inspiration Point. How perfect is that? This state park was originally owned by actor Will Rogers who bequeathed his picturesque property to the public in 1944 after his widow died. The views of the entire LA basin, from the Pacific to downtown will inspire love on the spot.

-Elysian Park -

We’ve explored this east side gem before in our Get Out! series, so be sure to read our previous posts for more trails information. Elysian Park is one of the city’s largest parks, so there are many love inspiring scenes and paths to make an adventure. It would be a great stop before that dinner downtown.

Just for the record, these hikes are just as beautiful solo. In fact, it’s the only way I’ve done most of them, unless you count my pups!

Lake Arrowhead

This past weekend I escaped the city with a few friends and headed to Lake Arrowhead. This scenic mountain resort community can be found in the San Bernardino Mountains, about 2 hours east of Los Angeles and 30 minutes north of San Berdoo. If you need away, this area is perfect for the log cabin, fireplace, and outdoor hiking kind of weekend getaway.

The village of Lake Arrowhead is almost completely supported by tourism, so there are plenty of amazing places to stay or rent for a few days. With the lake, an abundance of trails and year round events, Lake Arrowhead provides a wide arrange of activities for everyone. So, we decided to break out of our cozy cabin, after cooking breakfast on our fireplace, I may add, and head out into the woods.

South Shore Trail

We headed into the Village and found the start of the South Shore Trail hidden behind the local shops and along the lake. The trails are finely paved and follow the entire length of the lake on a semi-private path. The views were gorgeous! It was a complete removal from the palm trees of Los Angeles as we pounded through packs of snow and fallen leaves. The South Shore Trail shows up clearly on any GPS and is a moderate hike with twists and turns along the backside of the beautiful lakeside homes and cabins.

Lake Arrowhead Village

The Village area acts as the town center since Lake Arrowhead doesn’t have an official town center. In the village, you can find the supplies needed, plus browse some local shops for knick-knacks and gifts. Also, be sure to grab some warm weather clothing at the Pendleton shop.

One more mention that I must make, The Grill at Antlers Inn. We dropped into Twin Peaks (one village over) to catch a sunday morning brunch as we headed out of the mountains and found this comfy lodge with fires burning. The menu offers a great selection for breakfast and lunch and the atmosphere is more upscale than you’d expect to find at a traditional inn. Don’t be put off by the promise of all-you-can-eat sushi next door, as the brunch stands alone. Trust me, this is one fuel stop that won’t hurt your wallet and will only please your taste buds.

Silver Lake Reservoir

Silver Lake is an amazing neighborhood, it was declared this by me way before Forbes chimed in. After moving here from New York City, I was thrilled to find a place where I could step off my porch and find delicious coffee in every direction, a restaurant that I wanted to show off to visitors and boutiques where I could find something for me and something for that upcoming gift-giving occasion. Since I arrived, the ‘hood has developed even more with hip shops and cafes, my neighbors have gotten younger and the parking has gotten more challenging. With that said, there’s always been one gem unaffected by these additions: the Silver Lake Reservoir.

The path around the reservoir, there’s two in fact, the Silver Lake Reservoir and the Ivanhoe Reservoir, is just under 3 miles with little incline. It’s perfect for jogging, walking dogs and just as an excuse to get out – as if you need one with SoCal weather! I suggest grabbing a beverage in the morning at LA MILL and beginning your journey there. It’s the best spot in the neighborhood and you may just bump into a low key celeb while adding cream and sugar to your coffee.

As you start your journey along Silver Lake Boulevard, you’ll pass the SL recreation center where there’s always a basketball game in progress and possibly the weekly yoga classes offered to those living in the area. Keep your eyes on that beautiful view of the Foothill Mountains, but don’t miss the architectural treasures, like an original Neutra and the John Lautner Silvertop residence in the west hills.

Beachwood Canyon

Books, Beasts and Beachwood. That doesn’t even begin to sum up the afternoon hike I recently had with my dear friend and published author Lauren Strasnick. To continue the celebration of her latest book launch (it’s her third!) she invited me to journey with her through one of her favorite LA neighborhoods: Beachwood Canyon. As an Angeleno, I admittedly do not know the ins and outs of the canyon as well as I wish I did, but Lauren lived in the hood for 10 years, and introduced me to the calm, peaceful and quiet nature of what’s hidden beneath the famous Hollywood sign.

We began what turned into a 4.5 mile walk on Vista del Mar, near the famous Cafe 101. Lauren started us off at a unique set of stairs, at the top of the Vista del Mar hill just before it veers right. It’s a hidden passageway that anyone would miss driving by, but it instantly made me feel that I was someplace special. Los Angeles is full of hidden stairwells and this is a beautiful example with a small seating area in the middle, surrounded by the early street lamps of the city.

As we winded up Hollymont Drive and back to Vista del Mar, we came across Krotona of Old Hollywood. Founded by the Theosophical Society in Beachwood Canyon in 1919, it’s purpose was to ” build a community without discrimination; study religion, philosophy and science; explore the inexplicable.”  The colony, which has now been relocated to Ojai, thrived in the Hollywood Hills from 1919-1924. These still-standing buildings and temple from the original development have been transformed into apartments.

We continued to weave through the neighborhood and made our way to the village shops and the old Hollywoodland Realty company. As we chatted,  Lauren told me about her inspirations behind her latest young adult novel, Then You Were Gone, along with a sprinkling of insider tidbits about her old hood. For instance, that broken up statue over there isn’t just junk, it’s an old Lady of Guadalupe statue that was hit by a delivery truck years ago. The neighborhood vowed to repair it, but instead it became it’s own makeshift alter with candles and flowers being dropped off weekly.

In the village there is a special memorial to Figaro the cat (Lauren LOVES cats), so we took a moment to pay our respects.

Next, we began our incline deep into the canyon. As we wandered, Lauren didn’t hesitate to point out fantastic points of architecture and hidden drives. It quickly dawned on me why she seemed to have a romantic attachment to Beachwood… any artist, writer, or musician, could hole up for days with their creative work, in any of these tucked away homes. In fact, history shows that writers Aldous Huxley and James M. Cain, and gangster Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel all had hideaways in the hills of Beachwood.

Lauren continued to dazzle me with insights of Hollywood, books, and travel, along with cooking and her self-professed “best kale chip recipe ever.” I shared that I recently acquired a Vitamix and how green juices have changed my life. Lauren swore that just like kale before it, “parsley will have it’s day.” I’m not one to argue, so I’ll be planting more leafy greens asap. As we winded back down the hill, we stopped to take in her favorite view of the city below. It took my breath away. Contemplating the miles we had covered on the road and in conversation, it wrapped up to be a lovely mid-day excursion with a friend. So, grab one and go, Beachwood is an escape within the city.

Rose Bowl Stadium

Yesterday, we found ourselves in Pasadena once again. This time we were on a different mission – The Rose Bowl Flea Market. If you’ve been there, you know it’s an overwhelming experience full of hidden treasure, cheeky finds, and bargain headquarters. If you haven’t, let this be your inspiration to get there next month! Known around the world as a destination for fashion, interior and style inspiration, this is not just any flea market, this show brings out worldly connoisseurs, designers and serious shoppers looking for that perfect piece of whatever. Let’s not forget that this flea market is consistently voted as one of the best in the country.

The Rose Bowl is an outdoor athletic stadium where the annual New Year’s Day college football game is played as well as the season home of the UCLA Bruins team. It’s also been on the world stage several times for the Olympic games of 1932 and 1984, as well as the FIFA World Cup in 1994 and 1999. Besides the expansive (2500 vendors!) market that the space offers, you may also know the name from the famous “festival of flowers, music and equestrians and sports” known as the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade which began in 1895 and brings in every new year since.

With over 15,000 to 20,000 buyers every month, a trip to the Rose Bowl can be a mental and physical challenge. The crowds can be challenging, especially in SoCal’s summer heat, but if you plan ahead, hydrate and stay focused with particular items in mind, you’ll ace it. Top finds at the flea: mid-centruy modern furniture and lighting, vintage and costume jewelry, retro toys and pop culture collectibles, linens and art, and the most expansive selection of vintage clothing, hard-to-find denim, leather bags and shoes anywhere. A trend we spotted this time out was and abundance of ivy league sports equipment, letter jackets and old-timey lawn games.

The Dress Up Truck

The Rose Bowl Flea Market happens on the 2nd Sunday of every month. Entry fee is $8-$15 per person depending on the time and entry begins from 6am to 4pm. Remember: wear comfortable shoes, sunscreen, a hat, and maybe an umbrella to shield you from the sun, plus plenty of water. Also, a small push cart may come in handy if you plan to spend the day. One more thing, don’t be afraid to barter. The vendors are friendly and ready to please, so be reasonable, but try to get you money’s worth for sure. Have fun!

Elysian Park

We’re all thinking about resolutions with the new year upon us, so what’s yours? For me, I’ve decided to dedicate 2013 to getting out more. I’m not talking about throwing on some heels and throwing back some classy cocktails, kinda get out more. I mean good ol’ nature. I vow to get outside and into all the splendid nature that Los Angeles has to offer its residents. As an Eastsider, I’m surrounded by many parks, mountains and curious hikes, so it’s just a matter of making the time to explore.

I began my 2013 journey at Elysian Park. As the oldest park in LA and the second largest, at 600 acres, I’d think it would gain more glory as a place to spend weekends and such with friends, but honestly, I don’t think enough people know about this luscious land. Sure, it’s the home of Dodger Stadium, but it’s also full of avocado trees that patrons can freely pick! And did you know that it hosted the shooting part of the pentathlon of the 1932 Summer Olympics? I didn’t think so….

For my first hike of the year, I chose an easy, flat trail above the west side of the park that totaled 1.38 miles. I’ve included the map of my exact trail via MapMyHike. This amazing mobile app traces your walk while calculating your total climb, workout details and allows you to share the information with friends. It’s pretty handy to have while exploring, plus, you can always find your way out too!

There are a variety of paths with varying levels of intensity throughout the park, so it’s just a matter of deciding how much you want to sweat. The views are breathtaking regardless of the journey. Many paths lead exclusively throughout the trees, but there are also paved pathways along various roads throughout the park.

The Chavez Ravine Arboretum is worth a quick stop too. Oh, and did I mention Elysian Park is also the home of the Los Angeles Police Revolver & Athletic Club Cafe? This old timey cafe doesn’t offer much in cuisine, but it is open to the public, just be sure there isn’t target practice that day!

Lately I’ve been watching Adam-12 reruns on Antenna TV, partially because I’m always an easy fan for cop shows & this one holds up surprisingly well. It doesn’t have the campiness of Dragnet, the other Jack Webb cop show of the era, but also shares the meticulous attention to actual police procedure.

While watching any old TV shows provide constant “Hey, it’s THAT guy!” moments of spot-the-familiar-character actor, Adam 12 has the added bonus of the tons of location shooting done for the show, centered around a pair of beat patrol cops in late ’60s-early ’70s Los Angeles. We get a double dose of location as well – the background shots while we follow their in-car conversations as well as the scenes where Reed & Malloy are out of the car talking to victims, witnesses or chasing suspects.

Being familiar with the Studio City/North Hollywood neighborhoods of LA’s San Fernando Valley is a big help. The show was done out of Universal Studios which sits next to both, so those areas tended to be the go-to locales for various episodes, along with downtown LA and some recognizable bits of Griffith Park.

It’s the commercial architecture I’m most interested in – I’ll recognize a stretch of a familiar main drag like Lankershim Boulevard or Vineland Avenue – only the banks & restaurants are all different, the gas prices are 10% of what they are now (literally), and the signage gives the streets an eerie “lost world” type vibe. I get a window into the realm of my daily errands from 40 years ago. I suppose if I wanted to see 30 years ago with a lot more of the West Side involved, I’d rewatch Rockford Files, which is unfortunately not in the regular rotation of any of my current cable line-up.

To go back even further, however, means looking at old movies, especially silent films, which were shot as the city itself grew & expanded.  In Act Of Violence from 1948, there are wonderful location shots of Van Heflin running away from Robert Ryan through old downtown Los Angeles, through Bunker Hill when it was still a residential neighborhood and not the locale of Disney Hall and the Music Center.

The other night I watched some Harold Lloyd shorts on TCM. First was Number, Please from 1920, mostly shot on the long-gone Pickering Amusement Pier in Venice, just south of the Santa Monica Pier.  Pickering eventually became Pacific Ocean Park before fires led to its demolition in the early ’70s.  Then there was  Never Weaken from 1921, which first had Harold conning people in the old Bunker Hill neighborhood (one soap gag takes place in front of the old Angels’ Flight Pharmacy) and later has him dangling up on the construction girders along 7th and Olive downtown.

And when I tried looking some of these things up, I came across this wonderful site by John Bengston I’ll pass along that shows all sorts of locations, then and now, from silent comedies of the era, from Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd as well as Laurel & Hardy.  It’s fascinating to see parts of the city from nearly 100 years ago preserved in classic film.  Sometimes places that are overly congested are totally empty (kind of like that shot in Diamonds Are Forever of Bond driving down the Vegas strip past the long-gone Dunes into a big sea of 1971 empty desert that’s totally built up now), others have the same old buildings with different occupants.

In any case, a useful source for identifying the specific street corner of where someone got hit in the face with a pie before your grandfather was born. Enjoy!

Named for silent screen actress, Norma Talmadge, this majestic art deco apartment building opened in 1924; serving as a luxurious residence to the Hollywood elite.  Even though the maid’s quarters are more likely to serve as 4th and 5th bedrooms for extended families today, the The Talmadge still boasts loads of charm and status as a “doorman” building.

The HMS Bounty - another famed old Hollywood hangout – continues to attract sizable crowds for drinks and dinner with mad kitsch and character.

Immanuel Presbyterian Church was established in 1888, but statuesque structure that looms majestically over  the south west corner of Wilshire and Berendo wasn’t constructed until 1928.  It remains one of the city’s more luminous architectural gems.

The Chateau La Martine on Normandie may have seen better days but its exterior remains marvelous.
Look out for subsequant Koreatown posts – it’s clearly an area of infinite mystique that keeps revealing itself!

The Banning Museum
Tour 18 carefully restored rooms of this historic residence and learn about the exciting life of Phineas Banning, who left his home in Delaware when he was only 13 years old to find his fortune in the West. Franklin Canyon Native American Hike
Get away from the hustle and bustle of city life at this beautiful nature-park that boasts five miles of hiking trails, a lake, duck pond, amphitheater, and endless picnicking spots.  On August 14th at 5:00 pm, “Tribal Fun for Kids” will teach your little ones about the local native Tongva people and how they lived – their houses, food, games, and what it was like to be a Tongva kid. Your kiddos will even hit the trails and learn how to live off of the land.

Leonis Adobe Museum
Experience California ranch life at this charming country home and farm, as it was over 150 years ago. Featured on the PBS series, California Gold, the lovely grounds feature living history exhibits and guided tours. Meet horses and longhorn steer, learn how to wash clothes by hand, and pump water from a trough beside the grand oak tree. Parking is free and the museum is located just next door to the Sagebrush Cantina, which has plenty of seating and is very kid-friendly, should you need some tasty vittles for your little buckaroos.

Los Encinos State Historic Park
This spacious 5-acre park features the De La Ossa Adobe, built in 1849, and a natural spring-fed duck pond that is very popular with families. Bring a picnic and enjoy an afternoon lunch on the historic grounds and feed the ducks – food is available for 25 cents.

Paramount Ranch
Take a drive up PCH or the 101 to the Malibu mountains, where this beautiful “movie ranch” is nestled amidst sprawling oak trees alongside a gurgling creek. Purchased by Paramount Studios in 1927, it became a location for filming westerns and hits like Gunsmoke, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and more recently, Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman. Stroll through the now-permanent old Western Town set and you will feel like you’ve gone back in time. It’s a great place to take pictures of your little ones, so bring a camera. Hiking trails abound, as does the open space for little legs to run wild.

The Queen Mary
This Grand Dame of famous ocean liners began her life at sea in 1936 and has been enchanting passengers ever since. Take a self-guided tour or reserve a spot in one of the many guided options, featuring the ship’s WWII history, art deco designs, a Russian submarine, and paranormal activity (though not recommended for kids!). There are several dining options, from casual cafes to upscale restaurants. For a real nautical adventure, you can even stay onboard in one of the ship’s many first-class staterooms.

The first thing we did on spring break with our niece Phenom, was go on a little hike around out neighborhood.  See our blue shed over my shoulder?  She arrived after dark last night from Indiana and woke up in the mountains.

Cool chick art on the wall of our first parking lot in downtown Los Angeles.  We went to Chinatown and looked through the shops.  The real herb and grocery stores away from the touristy stuff are really the most interesting.  We bought preserved plums, tamarind and mochi to sample later.

Tip for visitors to downtown: check out this building up close if you have a chance.  The architecture interesting inside, too, there’s a pricy but clever gift shop inside, and the bathrooms are clean, free and open to the public.  Shhhh!

Our shortcut from Disney Hall to the Grand Central Market led us to Angel’s Flight.  This is the first time I’ve ever been there when it was up and running.   Twenty-five cents for a quick taste of the past, riding the funicular downhill for about a block.  The lady sitting on the right told us that we could catch the DASH to the Fashion District.

Lunch outside the Grand Central Market.  I had a shrimp and a fish tostada.  Phenom put together an oyster and some shrimp from the Mexican seafood stand and steamed broccoli and cabbage from an Asian stand.   Mmmm.  We were hungry!  Angel’s Flight in the background.

Oh, the shopkeeper’s eyes lit up when they saw Phenom coming.  She’d look great in any of the cute styles they offered.   She’d even make this thing rock.   It reminded her of costumes from the recent production of Suessical she starred in at school.

We took the DASH to Santee Alley.  Pretty funny as we were only about four blocks away when we boarded it.  We walked back up Broadway, past the old  movie palaces and Clifton’s Cafeteria (closed for renovations, sadly).

We finished up our downtown tour with a visit to Union Station and Olvera Street.  Unfortunately we were too late to see the inside of Avila Adobe, downtown’s oldest building, so we were relegated to the kitchy trinket shops along Olvera.  But we did see an amazing photograph of a woman whose face was about 70% covered in Day of the Dead make-up, which was hauntingly beautiful and our favorite thing we saw here.

Headed home in the middle of rush hour. What are you gonna do?  It happens sometimes, but at least the conversation was good.

In the latest development in downtown LA’s revitalization, trendy boutique hotel chain Ace announced earlier this week that it will open its first Los Angeles location in the up-and-coming Historic Core of downtown. Ace, which has locations in New York, Portland, Seattle & Palm Springs has not officially announced the opening; however, The Hollywood Reporter confirms that the firm has purchased the formerly disused United Artists Building on Broadway for an undisclosed amount.

The building first opened in 1927 and housed the United Artists Company, which was founded by silent film stars Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford & Douglas Fairbanks. A series of theaters operating under various companies occupied the building for most of the 20th century, and in 1986 it was purchased by Wescott Christian Center and became home to the Los Angeles University Cathedral. Vacant since 2010, the United Artists Building will now reportedly be restored to its former theatrical glory. THR reports that sources close to the project say that Ace “intends to make a fully renovated and reactivated theater the showpiece of its future hotel.”
