If you’ve been looking for high-quality geography lesson plans that tie directly to American History, you need to head over to Maps in the K-12 Classroom: A Resource for Teaching the Geographic Dimensions of American History.

Maps in the K-12 Classroom is a project of the Newberry Library’s Hermon Dunlap Smith Center for the History of Cartography with financial support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

I was lucky enough to run into the group at a conference several years ago and was able to snag a handful of CDs with their goodies on it. We were allowed to make copies of the CD and so have been handing them out left and right ever since. At the time, they hadn’t posted their stuff online and I never really thought to check. But it is definitely worth your time to visit.

The site has 18 maps in six major categories:

• Exploration and Encounter
• Migration and Settlement
• Environmental History
• The Historical Geography of Transportation
• Political and Military History
• The Geography of American Communities

Every map has four lesson plans at different grade levels for a total of 72 lessons. And while each lesson is designed for a specific grade level, they can easily be adapted to fit your needs.

Lessons are easily printed and the maps can be downloaded as PDFs. Each lesson also has links to supplementary materials and images as well as museum curator’s notes.

The site truly is a hidden treasure!

It may seem a little early for Christmas but I thought I’d put some ideas on the website.

Globes are always popular at Christmas, as they make an excellent gift. Informative, educational and in my opinion beautiful. We do our best efforts at second guessing demand, but our globes do sell out very quickly, so we do recommend ordering early to avoid disappointment.

Here is the first part of a talk by David Rumsey about  the transformation of his library of historical maps into digital format. This is a great example of someone tapping into the huge potential of digital media.

It is exciting to see Rumsey’s engagement with Second Life. Here in New Zealand there are a number of initiatives to use Second Life in tertiary education, and I think there is a great (as yet largely untapped) opportunity for libraries to participate in Second Life learning projects as well.

I decided to try and find an article that showed a connection between GIS  and the history of music.  While searching I found the Seattle Music Map.  Seattle is one of today’s most dynamic music cities, where a rich history feeds a lifestyle that is all about innovation, inspiration, and rocking the house every day and night.  Visitors to the site are able to click on any location on the map to find out more information about music-related events that happened there.  The website covers music from the Vaudeville Era (1864- 1925), Classic Jazz era (1917- 1933), Flower Power, Light Show (1967- 1970), and the Punk Era (1976- 1983) as well as many others.  One notable attraction in the heart of Seattle is the Jimmy Hendrix Statue on 900 E. Pine St. This privately commissioned artwork shows Seattle’s legendary axeman in a typically flamboyant performance pose.

Digital History is an amazing website that documents world history in a way that is easy for all ages to understand.  The site provides visitors with an interactive map, online textbook, documents, exhibitions, an various research guides for both teachers and students.  The interactive map is a Timeline that documents the history of America from the 1500s to the 1990s. As the user navigates through the years, symbols pop up on the map representing various social, political, and cultural events.  The user can rollover the symbols to get more information and also click on them to get a better description as well as a link to a site providing more detailed research information.

The David Rumsey Historical Map Collection has over 20,000 maps and images online. The collection focuses on rare 18th and 19th century North American and South American maps and other cartographic materials. Historic maps of the World, Europe, Asia, and Africa are also represented. Collection categories antique atlas, globe, school geography, maritime chart, state, county, city, children’s, and manuscript maps.  The collection can be used to study history, genealogy and family history.

The YouTube video depicts Part 3 of a talk given by David Rumsey at the March 6, 2008 launch of his historical map library and exhibition in the virtual world of Second Life. The talk was delivered at the Rumsey Map Islands in Second Life. All of the maps in the talk can also be seen and downloaded from Rumsey’s free online map library at http://www.davidrumsey.com/index.html The site makes use of the GIS (Geographic Information System) 3D viewer, a unique 3D browser based viewer that lets you fly through historic maps in three dimensions. The maps are also available in the traditional two-dimensional GIS format. David Rumsey uses a special GIS Browser that allows integration and interaction of historical maps with current geospatial data and other historical maps. Examination of the maps in GIS reveals changes in the history of the areas shown on the maps.

Eleven historical maps of the San Francisco Bay area from 1851 to 1926, eighteen historical maps of the Boston area from 1776 through 1897, over thirty historical maps covering the area of the 1804 – 1806 Lewis and Clark Expedition, 35 maps of Washington D.C., and 32 maps of New York City are now available for viewing in the GIS Browser. Additional historic maps of U.S. cities and regions will be added in the near future including Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver, Seattle, Yosemite Valley, and Lake Tahoe. The current geospatial data that can be overlaid and compared to the historical maps includes roads, lakes, parks, state boundaries, aerial photography, topographic mapsheets, digital elevation models and satellite imagery.

This weekend our school held the 18th annual GeoTech Conference. This year’s session proved to be the most interesting of the three I have attended. David Rumsey, President of Cartography Associates, presented the keynote. As I found out during the dinner the night prior to his keynote, Mr. Rumsey is more than just a collector of maps. He is someone who is on the forefront of technology. Through Luna Imaging, Mr. Rumsey is able to share his extensive collection of maps with everyone. Even better, it is free. Mr. Rumsey received offers from prestigious institutions such as Stanford and Yale to house his collection, but after understanding that few people would have access to his collection he declined. While currently only ten percent (a number just under 15,000) of Mr. Rumsey’s collection is available on-line, it is the software that is most impressive. Those familiar with Arc View or the klm files for Google Earth will appreciate Mr. Rumsey’s hand in pushing those applications to new limits. Those who are new to these features, enjoy the tour of Lewis and Clark’s expedition. For me the biggest treat came during the Friday night dinner. During his brief talk Mr. Rumsey outlined the process of scanning such historic maps. He mentioned his goals for the future, including a collaborative project with Flickr. Seriously? This guy is one of the top men in creating digital images of historic maps and he wants to work with Flickr to see that more people can find a use for his collect. I think that is pretty cool.
