German scientists experimented with frogs centuries ago, proving that if the temperature of water where a frog is submerged is gradually increased, the frog will be virtually cooked, and dies in the water it slowly came to accept despite the alarming increase in stifling heat. If, however, a frog is faced with a sudden volume of hot water, that frog will jump and save its retched life. That story came to my mind as I read the headlines of Lebanese newspapers online today as they covered the independence day celebrations and military parade. I had to smile sadly as I read about our so called independence.

What the country is celebrating, as it did since 1945, is independence from French colonial rule. Since then, the country underwent a Palestinian uprising to take over the state, Israeli invasions, various episodes of civil strife, Israeli occupation, Syrian occupation, and now Iranian occupation by proxy. Still we celebrate, a military parade by an army having less stature and arms than the militia armed by the Persians that operate a resistance on demand that takes orders from Syria and Iran. Decisions of war and peace are taken by the mercenary militia independently of the will of the Lebanese government and its citizens. The hapless citizens’ role in the resistance adventures is to die, be maimed and lose their homes and sources of income, and the government’s role is to negotiate a cease fire by begging the international community to pressure Israel to stop bombing the country, and to later beg for funds from the international community to rebuild, reconstruct, fix the economy, and resettle the displaced (who mostly vote for Hizbollah who started the war in the first place). Then that same government is blamed for not rebuilding quickly enough, while the billions that Nasrallah, the leader of the militia, avowed to possessing as a holy gift from Iran – in front of TV cameras – are spent on getting more arms, enlarging and training the militia to make more wars when it suits Iran and Syria’s agendas and political maneuvering. So, yes, independence.

Frogs will stay in that slowly boiling water, getting used to their environment, accepting the way things are, unless there was a jolt. That jolt for Lebanon came on Valentine’s Day 2005. On that day, a sudden infusion of boiling water was dumped in our Lebanese pot, and my country frog-men and -women jumped. They jumped so high, that one of their problems, their most intractable one for the past thirty years, was suddenly solved. The majority of Lebanese felt, rightly or wrongly, that the Syrians went too far with the killing of the ex-Prime Minister of Lebanon, the ex-minister of economy Basil Fuleihan and the people who died with them as a result of the terrorist attack that day. Two million people took to the streets of Beirut, squarely blaming Syria for the terrorist attack, and pressured the International Community to help them rid their country of an oppressive military presence that they have endured for decades. The one time that they united, with one voice, things seemed to work. They jumped.

Since then, Syria and Iran have gone back to the slow but methodic boiling of the Lebanese frog pot. Things are happening so gradually, as they did during the Syrian occupation, that people are back again to their state of stupor, accepting their impending doom while enjoying the dip. Recently a friend told me that we have to be somewhat optimistic when looking at the Lebanese independence that I was questioning. He said that we needed to look at the positive 10% of what is happening, or else we would be too depressed. It is precisely that sentiment of looking at what is going well that is blinding many Lebanese to the overwhelmingly existential catastrophe that is slowly looming over the country. The temperature is slowly rising. We are accepting more and more outrageous practices with the hope of saving the country and what is left of our economy.

Here is a wake up call: There will be nothing worth saving if the country is lost. Not many people seem to be seeing the writing on the wall. As long as there is “Sky Bar” and the nightspots, going out, good food, and plastic surgery to look good and go out to listen to the hundreds of new singers and performers who dot the night scene with their plastic made up faces, the Lebanese are in a kind of coma. I remember that collective feeling when I lived in Lebanon. It’s okay, as long as we make a living, go to parties, and send our fresh graduates around the world to look for jobs and send back remittances, it’s better than an all out war threatened by the Syrians that keep reminding us that they can break the country on our heads. So we cower in the corner, accept the Syrian and Hizbollah reality, and make do with what we have.

Our own President, not too surprisingly-as he is seen by many as a Syrian invention- announced out of the blue recently that Syria and Iran are not interfering in Lebanon. Hang on a minute, where does our President live? If the daily interference and the existence of, um, Hizbollah was something that he didn’t know, it’s a disaster, and if he knows the obvious and glaring truth and is saying that to win points with the forces interfering in the country, it is a bigger disaster. Whatever the reasoning, I think we have ourselves a frog King.

The Syrians have been slowly increasing our level of tolerance of what interference we would collectively accept as a nation since they orchestrated their military advent into Lebanon in 1976. They never acknowledged our independence and have been working methodically to subjugate our country to annex it, with its wealth, water, shore and its people. We are a prime piece of real estate after all. The Syrians blame Lebanon being severed from Syria (although they fail to note that there was no country called Syria at the time) on Sykes-Picot, an agreement between Colonial France and England that divided the loots of land gained after the fall of the Ottoman Empire and created Lebanon and Syria as separate entities. The Syrian selective memory neglects to note that Lebanon had a separate and quite distinct identity since the time of the first civilizations that settled in the region, it was mentioned in the Bible several times, it had a separate form of government under the rule of the Emirs during the Ottoman Empire’s four-century rule, and under the French mandate, we had our “Greater Lebanon” border declared by General Gouraud in 1920 to give us our borders of today. Since that time Syria has carried a campaign of divide and rule, allegedly assassinating whoever threatened to unite the country, as well as waging a military campaign to occupy our land which it did from 1976 to 2005.

The only setback in this long Syrian campaign came when Rafiq Hariri, the builder of after war Lebanon was assassinated under Syrian occupation. Since that date, a steady war was again waged to marginalize the independence movement, March 14th (the day in 2005 when the great majority of resident Lebanese took to the streets to feel and express the national dignity that evaded them for decades under Syrian hegemony). The leaders of March 14th were targeted with assassinations, one by one they perished either by hits by ghost killers or torn to bit by explosives. Explosions were also planted in different parts of the country, especially in March 14-strong areas, Hizbollah started playing the Shi’a card and pulling ministers from the government to claim that it was no longer legitimate without one sect being represented (replacement Shi’ite ministers not belonging to Hizbollah were threatened physically by fatwas being issued that stopped them short of taking part in the government). Then Syria allegedly orchestrated the Nahr el Bared Palestinian camp battle, resulting in civilian casualties as well as the marked killing a large number of Lebanese army soldiers in the process. Soon after that, other Palestinian camps under Syria’s control started showing signs of unrest.

Syria at various stages closed the border with Lebanon, causing severe disruptions to the economic goods and trade movement and claimed that Al-Qaeda was entrenched in North Lebanon and threatened to invade the country. All this time, the International Tribunal for Lebanon to investigate and try the perpetrators of the terrorist attack of February 14th 2005 was going forward with a snail pace in a tug of war game between the Bush administration and the Syrian regime, a stand off that was eventually won by the Syrians by virtue of the very nature of their regime, a family dictatorship which stays in power unchallenged and waits out adversary Western administrations to change as they tend to do in democracies. That happened in the case of Chirac and Bush. Syria then proceeded to instruct its proxies to close the downtown Beirut area, a primary source of income for thousands and the pride and joy of the Beirutis in particular, who were mostly Sunnis and Christians, and while Hizbollah went on what they claimed was a miscalculated unilateral act of war against Israel at Iran’s behest in 2006, Syria was secretly negotiating peace with Israel at the same time as Lebanese children were torn to bits and Lebanese infrastructure was being vaporized by Israeli plane raids.

Much to Syria’s frustration, the independence movement still showed no signs of abetting, despite veering the mercurial General Aoun into Hizbollah’s lair by promising the weak man the presidency, and despite the failed tent city that brought downtown Beirut to a standstill. The Syrians then instructed their agents in Lebanon to attack the two moslem factions of March 14, the Sunnis and the Druze. The military aggression on the Capital and the Druze mountain served to break the resolve of Jumblatt and painted Saad Hariri in a corner. An armed militia stronger than the army had its hand on their throats and they were not armed to protect themselves, nor could they depend on the army to protect them. Hizbollah had already neutralized the army by shooting down a helicopter flying over hizbollah areas, and demanded that the army officers intervening in an armed altercation in the Shiyah area started by Hizbollah be tried and put in jail. The disastrous Doha accord ensued which gave Hizbollah the obstructing third in the government, setting a dangerous precedent in quasi-democratic Lebanon. The parliamentary elections of last June gave a clear win to the independence movement, again to be reversed by forcing the Prime Minister to form a coalition government with Hizbollah and their allies as a result of their veiled and direct threats of going back to May 2008, the date their militia attacked civilians in Beirut and the mountains.

The pressure and temperature is being steadily and slowly augmented by Syria and Iran, and the Lebanese – divided as ever- are failing to see the bubbles in the boiling water around them. One voice which seems to be aware of what is going on and the gravity of the situation is that of the Maronite Patriarch, who has been the target of a never seen before slander campaign by Hizbollah clerics and Christian allies of Syria, this in a land where the moral standing of religious figures is revered by all as has been the case for centuries of co-existence between muslims and christians in the region.

The recent government was formed with a real veto third for Hizbollah, despite appearances of the contrary.

Syrian officials make daily announcements of what should and shouldn’t happen in Lebanese politics, in a flagrant trend of interference in Lebanese internal affairs.

But my fellow citizens seem content to take the transgressions one by one, and slowly but surely, the Syrians and Iranians are gaining ground, taking the country hostage to suit their regional deals at the expense of the hapless Lebanese. And in the middle of all this alarming situation that is threatening to erase the country from the map, we see it fit to celebrate our independence. If that isn’t a shot of morphine to the population and their leaders, what is?

I do hope that enough people who believe in the country and its future as a sovereign nation stay on course, and those following leaders like Aoun wake up and see where their general’s actions are leading what is left of the country. Accountability doesn’t seem to be a buzz word in Lebanon, but I hope it gains prominence before we are served as a meal with garlic, lemon and coriander on the regional table. Frog’s legs, anyone?

Den militanta gruppen Hizbollah arbetar för att utesluta och censurera Anne Franks dagbok som lärobok i Libanon efter en kampanj där de hävdar att boken främjar sionismen. Boken är en lärobok som används av en privat engelskspråkig skola i västra Beirut.

Hizbollahs tv-kanal Al-Manar (förbjuden i Frankrike) sände ett inslag som körde över boken eftersom att den belyste förföljelsen av judar under andra världskriget. Al-Manar är en antisemitisk kanal som återkommande hetsar mot judar.

I en intervju med Al-Manar  om denna fråga yttrar sig Hussein Al-Haj Hassan, Hizbollah politiker i Libanon, där han sagt att:
-Ingen lär ut en bok i libanesiska skolor utan att känna till dess innehåll. Dessa prestigefyllda och respektabelt skolor, istället för denna undervisning om vad de kallar “tragedi” i denna unga flickas fall, så bör de undervisa tragedin för det palestinska folket och det libanesiska folket tragedi och Libanons historiska motstånd och lidande för befolkningen i södra Libanon under sionistiska ockupationen”, Hizbollah har även uttryckt oron över att Libanon på grund av detta blir föremål för ett “sionistisk kulturell angrepp.”

Förutom att jämförelsen är hemsk och allt som sägs är motbjudande så glömmer dessa islamister att Anne Frank på något sätt inte är en israelisk representant, utan en flicka som förde dagbok under andra världskriget. Man kan fråga sig var de här finner någon som helst agenda eller att Frank ens sionismen. Kopplingar mellan förintelsen och sionismen eller koppling mellan förintelsen och Palestina är obehagliga men tyvärr något återkommande.

Sverige är ett fredligt land. Här kan vi fortfarande drömma om vita jular, mysiga julgudstjänster och ett överflöd av mat och presenter. Vi kan drömma om framtiden och förväntansfullt hoppas att det nya året ska bli ännu bättre än det föregående. Vi har inte upplevt krig på 200 år. Inte ens landets äldsta invånare har några som helst krigsminnen – om de inte är födda i ett annat land än Sverige. Sen kan det vara si och så med friden, den inre freden. Idyllen hotas ibland av medborgarnas egen egoism, omoral och brottslighet. I Israel är det annorlunda. Där är landets existens ständigt hotad. Där är landets regering mer eller mindre konstant upptagen med att försöka klara landets säkerhet. Krig efter krig måste utkämpas för att landet ska fortsätta att finnas. Ständigt går landets medborgare med soldater, poliser och sjukvårdspersonal i spetsen, på helspänn i väntan på nästa raketattack eller självmordssprängning. Det har gått så långt att många israeler inte längre lyssnar på nyheter på radio eller tv. Man orkar inte höra om fler dödade människor.

 Det är i det här perspektivet som den massiva omvärldskritiken av Israel, och den nästan obefintliga kritiken av motsidan, ter sig som absurd och oproportionerlig. Befogad kritik i sig är givetvis inte fel, övergrepp skall påtalas vem som än är ansvarig. Inte minst Israels egna media för ständigt en livlig och ofta regeringskritisk debatt. Regeringen får allt som oftast sina fiskar varma. Men bristen på proportioner i omvärldens reaktioner är så skriande. När Israels 2006 tvingades ingripa mot de Hizbollah-ledda attackerna från Libanon gormade vänsterpartiets ledare Lars Ohly i tal efter tal: ”Det är inte Libanon som ska utsättas för en blockad, det är Israel som nu måste fördömas och isoleras av världssamfundet”. Och media ger gärna röst åt sådan kritik, medan Israels försvarare har betydligt svårare att göra sig hörda. Än mer högljudda var anklagelserna efter Gaza-kriget i början av äret. Röd i ansiktet och med en röst vibrerande av Israelhat anklagade han Israel för att avsiktligt mörda barn i Gaza.

Ett exempel på omvärldens överseende ser vi i behandlingen av Hamas, organisationen som har Israels utplånande som sitt främsta mål. Hamas vann ett påstått demokratiskt val och därmed skulle organisationens terrorstämpel kunna tas bort tycks många mena. Men demokrati handlar inte bara om att vinna ett val, det gjorde Hitler också. Det handlar också om att erkänna mänskliga fri- och rättigheter, att lösa konflikter med fredliga medel och att erkänna andra folks rätt att existera. När högernationalisten Jörg Haider vann ett val i Österrike på 90-talet utsattes Österrike för internationell isolering, därför att Jörg Haiders något främlingsfientliga idéer ansågs oacceptabla. Vad säger man då om en organisation som hatar judar och vill utplåna en annan nation? Hamas har även efter att ha hamnat i regeringsställning vidhållit sitt krav på Israels utplånande. En av Hamasledarna, Yasser Mansour från Nablus, säger i en intervju i Boston Globe att Hamas fortfarande vill ha ett Palestina ”från floden till havet” och att man tänker kämpa för att återta allt land mellan Jordanfloden och Medelhavet. Var finns då de högljudda protesterna och bojkottkraven mot ett sådant parti?

 Ett annat exempel är den fruktade, Iran-stödda islamistiska organisationen Hizbollah (Guds parti) som av förre biståndsministern Carin Jämtin inte fick ett ord av kritik efter Libanonkriget. I hennes offentliga uttalanden i samband med Libanonkrisen framgår det att hon ser Hizbollah som en legitim politisk kraft i Libanon. De tusentals raketerna som sköts mot civilbefolkningen i Israel beskrev hon som ”några granater”. Men Israel kan hon kritisera i de starkaste ordalag för att man uppför en säkerhetsbarriär för att skydda sig mot terrorangrepp. Då använder hon ord som ”obegripligt” och ”vansinnigt sjukt”, för att inte tala om grova svordomar. Israel protesterade givetvis mot hennes uttalanden, men i övrigt var det tämligen tyst.

Exemplen kan mångfaldigas. I arabvärlden är Israel den ständiga syndabocken. I stort sett alla problem skylls på Israel. Här frodas antisemitismen som i Tyskland under Hitlertiden. För att det ska bli fred i Mellanöstern måste ”ohyran” Israel elimineras. Syndabocksbegreppet härrör från Bibeln. Där är syndabocken den som får bära skulden för något som andra gjort sig skyldiga till. På Yom Kippur, försoningsdagen, skulle två bockar offras (3 Mos. 16). På den ena av bockarna skulle översteprästen lägga händerna och därmed också lägga över folkets alla synder och brott på bocken. Bocken skulle sedan föras ut i öknen. När bocken var försvunnen skulle också synderna vara utplånade.

 Varför ska Israel, en av världens minsta nationer, vars folk förföljts och lidit i årtusenden, fortsätta att vara världens syndabock? Det finns en som redan burit världens synd till försoning för alla. Som kristna måste vi göra allt för att det budskapet ska nå ut även i muslimvärlden. När Försonaren tas emot kan försoning ske, även mellan de oförsonligaste fiender.

• President Obama and his wife Michelle are not vaccinated for the H1N1 virus, and waiting in line like everyone else;

• Israel said Thursday that Hezbollah could have bombarded the state for a month with the weapons confiscated in the country’s largest-ever arms seizure;

• Sarah Palin’s upcoming book tour is blowing off large metropolitan centers like New York, LA, Chicago and Philadelphia for Ft. Wayne, Birmingham and Jacksonville.

The much-hated, frequently murderous Burmese Army might be about to tango with the Wa Army:

The tensions here might be glossed over by outsiders as yet another arcane dispute in strife-ridden Myanmar between the government and a mistrustful minority, except that the Wa have a well-equipped army of at least 20,000 full-time soldiers — about twice the size of Ireland’s armed forces — and are considered by the United States government as hosts to one of the world’s largest illicit drug operations.  The Wa have a significant arsenal, including about 300 shoulder-fired antiaircraft missiles, antitank weapons and ample assault rifles and ammunition, said Col. Peeranate Katetem of the Thai Army, who has spent a decade tracking the Wa.

Let’s compare this group to, say, Hizbollah – CFR notes the Iranian-sponsored Lebanese group “consists of several thousand militants and activists,” while the Middle East Quarterly note that:

Experts and analysts generally put the Hezbollah rocket force somewhere between 10,000 and 12,000 missiles. The heart of this arsenal remains rooted in Hezbollah’s massive stocks—perhaps 7,000 to 8,000—of 107mm and 122mm Katyusha rockets, virtually all of which were supplied directly from existing Iranian army stocks.

So, the Wa has more men in uniform, as well as high-tech weapons and a mountainous territory to attack and defend from the brutal but poorly-trained Burmese Army.  It’ll be a bloodbath.  This is not to say that the Wa are wonderful folks – much of their economy comes from the drug trade – but I can’t say that I’m really rooting for the tyrants in Rangoon to prevail in this 70 year old conflict.

Situationen när det gäller staten Israels framtid är oroande. Men inte bara för staten. Även för det judiska folket i andra länder tätnar orosmolnen. Aldrig har Israel varit i så starkt behov av internationellt stöd som nu. Samtidigt har stödet aldrig varit svagare. Till och med den starkaste förbundspartnern, USA, vacklar och väljer att öka pressen på Israel i stället för på Israels fiender. Det israeliska folket är ett luttrat folk, som mitt under all press och utsatthet, ändå fortsätter att leva ett normalt vardagsliv. Glädjen står högt i tak när ett barn föds eller ett ungt par gifter sig. Sorgen är djup när en anhörig dör, i sjukdom eller av en terrorattack. De, liksom vi, får möta den växling av bekymmer och livsgläjde som hör det mänskliga livet till. Men det är något av ett mirakel att de kan leva så normalt som de gör, under så pressade förhållanden.

 Judarnas liv som minoritetsfolk i diasporan är en historia fylld av diskriminering, förföljelse och förintelse. Att gå tillbaka till ett sådant liv är inte ett alternativ för de israeliska judarna efter det som skedde under andra världskriget. Landet Israel gavs dem åter när utplåningen grinade dem i ögat. De strömmade tillbaka till det historiska hemlandet och klamrade sig fast vid det som om det var det mest dyrbara de ägde. De visste att utan landet fanns ingen framtid. Det var där de hade sina rötter, där de kunde leva som fria människor, där deras tro och särart respekterades, där de åtnjöt beskydd och, åtminstone i någon mån, kunde ta ansvar för sitt eget öde.

Men trots allt blev många judar kvar i diasporan. En del blev fångade av totalitära system som inte släppte iväg dem. Andra fick det så pass bra, att de inte såg sig ha skäl nog att emigrera. Till Sverige kom många överlevande efter andra världskriget och valde att stanna kvar. Antisemitismen var i avklingande och många svenskar hyste stor medkänsla med judarna.

Annat är det idag.

De hot som Israel står inför idag är inga hjärnspöken, de är ytterst konkreta och överhängande. I öster lurar stormakten Iran, som ständigt upprepar sitt hot om att utplåna Israel. Det är inte bara hot med ord. Landet har idag enligt israeliska bedömare allt som behövs för att kunna sätta ihop en kärnstridsspets samt missiler som kan nå Israel. En enda av Irans kärnvapenförsedda missiler som når Israel  skulle räcka för att utplåna största delen av Israel från kartan. Så litet och tätbefolkat är Israel. I norr finns grannen och ärkefienden Syrien som har Mellanösterns största arsenal av kemiska och biologiska vapen, i en framtid kanske också kärnvapen. För två år sedan tvingades Israel gå till attack mot en hemlig kärnreaktor i Syrien. I norr finns också iranstödda Hizbollah, som i Allahs namn svurit att förgöra Israel. Öster om Iran ligger det oroliga kärnvapenförsedda Pakistan, hårt pressat av talibaner. Skulle den pakistanska regimen falla för talibanerna, skulle med all sannolikhet upp till 100 atombomber falla i muslimska terroristers händer. Det skulle inte bara hota Israel, utan hela världen. I det Hamas-styrda Gaza väller det vapen in från bl.a. Iran och Kina. I dessa vapenleveranser ingår missiler som kan nå Israels städer.

 Israels vänner måste se sanningen i vitögat. Ingen nation är så hotad som Israel, ingen är så missförstådd. Israels kamp för sin överlevnad beskrivs som anfallskrig och övervåld. Största delen av medievärlden upprepar med en dåres envishet sin ensidiga kritik av Israel.  Nationerna står på rad för att kritisera och fördöma Israel. Ändå skulle ingen av dem vilja byta med Israel. Om Sverige vore hotat på samma sätt skulle vi för länge sen krävt ett ingripande från världssamfundet. Omvärlden (närmast EU och USA) skulle med säkerhet fördömt den hotande parten och lovat att försvara Sverige. Men i Mellanöstern gäller det omvända. Där skall den kämpande demokratin Israel kritiseras, bojkottas och fördömas, medan de hotande diktaturländerna och terrorgrupperna hanteras med samtal och försiktig diplomati. Än värre är att hatet mot Israel också blivit till ett hat mot det judiska folket, var de än befinner sig.

 Det är med andra ord mörka olycksbådande ovädersmoln som sänker sig över världens judar i dessa dagar. Det är vår plikt i den fria världen, att stå upp för dem som hotas av förföljelse och utplåning. Vi i Sverige borde gå före och visa vägen när det gällre det judiska folket, vars lidande aldrig tycks ta slut.

Hezbollah Removes Weaponry from Explosion Site on 12 Oct 2009

On October 12, 2009, there was an explosion at a Hezbollah weapons storehouse in Tayr Filsay, in southern Lebanon. This aerial footage, taken shortly after the explosion, shows Hezbollah operatives closing down the area around the warehouse, driving in two trucks and removing weaponry from the site. They then took the weapons to a known weapons storage facility in the center of the village of Dir a-Nahar about four kilometers away. Only after Hezbollah removed the weaponry did they allow UNIFIL and the Lebanese Army to enter the site of the explosion. The IDF has submitted the footage to UNIFIL to aid in their investigation of the incident.

Perhaps it is the case that Syria does not wish to enter into a direct conflict with Israel, thus it is using Hezbollah and Hamas as proxies. But, if Israel gets into another conflict with Hamas and Hezbollah and it goes into Damascus, it would give Syria enough reason to retaliate and attack Israel which would undoubtedly pull in Iran and eventually the whole
region.

If all this is true, and you know the rumour-mill, Israel has shown extraordinary restraint and patience throughout these years.
