Face to Face after 10 years…

In Arnhem, 1999, we met for the first time. To study dance at the then called HKA. In a beautiful, old (but not very well maintained) building in the Weverstraat we spend every day from 830 am till 6 pm. Learning, sweating, rehearsing, creating, performing. Even though it was old (once the ceiling came down during class and we also went through the floor in one of the ballet studio’s…) absolutely loved that building. When people imagine a dance academy, very often the TV series “Fame” come to mind. Well, that’s actually how I would describe our school. It had such a special atmosphere. The art deco style, the canteen, the many stairs up and down, the Bartok Zaal, crazy dancers everywhere, the party’s, etc. etc. I think all of the students who went to study there will never forget it.

We came to learn, to grow as dansers, artists, people. All from different countries like Spain, Finland, Germany, Austia, Netherlands, Belgium, Iceland, different backgrounds and with different plans, thoughts, dreams. Almost 4 years we spend together in which each of us had their ups and downs. But one thing is for sure, we were a strong group, strong characters, individuals with a curiosity to explore.

With some I stayed in close contact, others I emailed once in a while, and of course some I met again on Facebook and some got lost out of sight. That’s how it goes.

Until about a year ago, when I got an email with the subject; “10 years to discuss”.

YES! Reunion time!!

We met in a lovely little village in the north of France with a residence for artists called “PAF”. I am so happy the weekend we picked stayed ‘empty’ in my schedule! Because most of the times I have to work, or perform, something gets in the way last minute, etc., but none of that this time. Perfect!

I rented a little car, picked up Janneke in Arnhem and together we drove to St. Erme.

I don’t really know how to discribe the whole weekend we had, but I can say this; it was just so so good! Comfortable, relaxing, beautiful, empowering, interesting, lovely diners, talks, massages, understanding, familiarity. I am so proud to know all of you! And I could see now how these people shaped me as a person and also as a dancer, how much we learned and gave to each other. Plus, it was so great to see what everyone does now. How inspiring it is what they do and how they grew in 10 years time. Wow!

There were a few of the group that coulnd’t make it and were definitely missed, but we thought of you guys! And who knows we meet in 10 years again?!?

Hong Kong has become my playground filled with gambling, hookers and stunts as I dive into the role as Wei Shen, former triad member turned undercover cop in what so far seems like a very far-fetched revenge plan.

Not unlike Street Of Fury, Sleeping Dogs features classic gang-member names and it’s all about giving each other Face. If the gripping story isn’t enough to keep you hooked, the streets are filled with side-missions and activities to kill time with when you’re bored of beating up strangers with pay-phones.

There are a few bad things in the mix though. I personally prefer the more simulation themed vehicle control that Grand Theft Auto IV has over the arcade one that this and many of the sandbox games have. It’s similar to the steering in Saint’s Row The Third and Just Cause 2. It’s way too sensitive and you have to be really careful and use very small movements of the stick to get a smooth feeling in the turning. It could be fixed with a small update adding the option to adjust the sensitivity.

Overall the game was great. I highly recommend it, it’s a Hong Kong bloodshed-movie styled sandbox game.

FIVE DUTCH AND BELGIUM MUSEUMS CREATE THEIR OWN CHANNEL

Through ARTtube, five Dutch and Belgian museums, including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Gemeentemuseum at the Hague in Belgium, M HKA in Antwerp, (the Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp) De Pont in Tilburg, and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam have launched an online video Channel to publish original films about art and design. A BREAKTHROUGH FOR FINE ART IN THE NEW MEDIA

The impact is that the ARTtube Channel further launches Art into the 21st century through the skillful use of the New Media. This is a significant advance. Both director Klaartje Quirijns and Anton Corbijn himself attended this event, with 4 screenings in 2 cinemas. A massive success for Cinema Zuid, because the event was sold out well in advance. Even the Dutch royal family was represented: HRH Prince Constantijn and HRH Princess Laurentien were spotted among the crowd.

Met uitzondering van 4 en 5 hieronder, de video’s op ArtTube voldoen aan de criteria voor Schone Kunst in de Nieuwe Media beschreven op de pagina Doel van deze blog:
1. Kunst in de Nieuwe Media moet toegankelijk zijn.
2. Kunst in de Nieuwe Media zou moeten zijn interactief.
3. Kunst in de Nieuwe Media zou moeten zijn kijker gericht. “Ik wil zien wat ik wil zien.”

Things get out of hand quickly when street fighting brothers Hu and Long gets bullied by the Dong Xing gang and their leader Short Sighted. In order to fight back they seek an alliance with the rival gang Hung Hing and their mental case leader King who reminds me of Tak Fuji from the Konami trainwreck conference of 2010.

Their usual way of getting revenge is to run up to and “chop up”  the rival gang-members with machetes on open streets. One might think that a scene like this would be very brutal and bloody, but it isn’t at all. There’s no blood spraying and no wounds at all actually, they just hit each other with their machetes like sticks and then they fall down.

It’s a pretty chilled movie that works well if the hours are late and your vision is blurred. It has a lot of comedy moments, some intentional, some in the crappy subtitles and some from the overly dramatic death scenes throughout the movie.

I give this movie 3 roundkicks out of 5.

I had the pleasure of speaking with HKA Head of School Steve Dare, and what struck me most in our conversation is how he has helped shape a clear mission and vision that drives the school.  At the core of this vision is a focus on building an intentionally diverse community, which from what I could tell aligns well with Mr. Dare’s values as a leader.

Describe your leadership style?

“It’s hard to say one has a style, [instead] I try to be aware of what my strengths are and the challenges I have…[I believe] I have the capacity to bring people into the leadership conversation.”  I realize building a school isn’t just about my ideas as a leader, but it’s a conversation between stakeholders.  

“[One of my greatest roles] is as an ambassador for the school and because I have a clear vision and sense of direction for the school, I want to bring as many people in as I can who share that vision.”  In this process it’s important to always remember “that we’re working with human beings” and you must always value building community and relationships.

How have you developed from place to place? Did you grow more through moving to new schools or maturing in the same position?

I think it’s a mixture of everything.  Working at very different schools has allowed me the opportunity to see how well established programs operate, as well as experiment with new ideas.

What’s been really important in my development is to see what different communities value.  “Every school context is different, the more access you have to an international community, and different experiences [help] you become a better person…because you develop a much greater perspective.”  Schools are about community so working in these different locations has helped facilitate that better.

What’s your greatest priority when choosing teachers and administrators for HKA?  How important is leadership ability?

“It can sometimes be situational and depends on the job description…Teachers are leaders in their own capacity in their classroom.”

When it comes to administrators I need leaders who are ok with making decisions and can be innovative.  Much of what administrators do is manage change, which can be difficult for schools.  However, People are often afraid to change not because they don’t want it, but because they don’t understand or know how to go through the process. 

“[Great leaders] are able to convey things with simple language, because one of the problems we have in change areas is we over complicate things, use too much jargon and language and we lose people…these leaders are able to put things in very simplistic terms that make people feel good about the change and make it seem achievable.”

HKA’s mantra is “Small School, Big Ideas”, how do you embody this?

“We’re never going to become the school that’s looking to [enroll] 2000 students, we like the fact that we’re small…[and] we believe there are many advantages to being in a small school…

 “[For example] we strive for intimacy within our community…[and we value] really knowing the people in our population…I’ve never been in a school that is so dedicated to building community as Hong Kong Academy.”  Even outside of our school walls we try to engage the community.  Many of our new building and facility decisions were made by examining what the surrounding community could already provide so we could complement that.

“[Also] just because you’re small, doesn’t mean you have to miss out on big school opportunities.”  Our new purpose built facilities will give our students many of the same experiences as other schools in Hong Kong.

What advice do you have for the next generation of international ED leaders?

Keep building connections with people.  Especially peers at other schools who can help guide you in decisions you’re considering at your own school.

Don’t be afraid to be bold but be aware of your own strengths and challenges. Nobody expects you to know or to be able to do everything, but you are expected to get the best resources for the job in hand.

Empower others around you and always give credit to that that has made a difference.

An order for 10 Airbus A380 superjumbos worth about $3.8 billion has been made by Hong Kong Airlines.

The airline’s corporate governance head Kenneth Thong is reported to have said that the aircraft were needed to help boost the airline’s growth, particularly in the development of business-class services to Europe.

HKA has previously ordered Airbus A330s, which will be used for services between Hong Kong and several European cities.

Thong told Bloomberg television in Hong Kong: “We think the business connection between Asia and Europe is going to be very exciting for the next couple of years, after the current [economic] crisis is over. We are planning for the aftermath.”

The carrier is to launch all-business-class flights from Gatwick to Hong Kong from March 8 using an A330 with 34 lie-flat beds and 82 cradle seats with a 51-inch seat pitch.

The A380 deal is due to be formally confirmed on January 17.

The contract will be a relief for the European planemaker, as the order risked being derailed by a dispute between the European Union and China.

Beijing opposes an EU plan that international airlines comply with a scheme to tackle carbon emissions.

But Kenneth Thong, HKA’s corporate governance head, told a television interview the order would go ahead.

The carrier, which has ambitious expansion plans, is likely to have got a big discount on the order for the super-jumbo aircraft.

Mr Thong said the aircraft were needed to help boost the airline’s growth, particularly in the development of business class services with Europe.

It had been expected that HKA would announce a large A380 order last year.

But the Financial Times newspaper reported that this was held up over the China’s opposition to the EU’s carbon emissions trading scheme, which would involve airlines paying additional costs.

The US also has concerns about the scheme.

The contract will take Airbus’s order backlog to 188. Airbus reportedly declined to comment ahead of a formal announcement of the contract on 17 January.

It looked as though Nobushige Kumakubo came out to join us but upon further Investigation, it turned out to be GFX Kyo. He was doing his best to make that track hate him and that Subaru. He went through every corner in that Subaru as if it was his last. I had the pleasure of leading him in tandem and every time i looked over he was right there. I couldn’t hear my car as that Impreza was so loud.

BSD HachiRoku was another face out there. He was in the white R34 you see above. That R34 was possibly the cleanest car out there…until crashes gave it some battle scars. He was throwing that car every which way on that track. He was getting angle like it was nothing. And that RB26! That engine screaming around every turn was just sex on wheels.

But, the registration thingy is broken at the moment. So hopefully it’ll be better this afternoon. I am pretty excited. I missed last time’s session.. and then missed camp too because I had student teacher obligations. But there’s always next Camp!! :)

I don’t know what I need for school supplies though.

I’m assuming Johnathon and Valla are signed up for the evening 9-12 classes yay! I hope so, that’s the one I’m signing up for. I’ll be disappointed if the class fills up before I can get there to click it.
