On the 4th December 2012, I posted an article about the pedophiles at HMS Ganges. It occurred to me I should post it on the forum at the Ganges web site. I felt it was a subject that should be discussed openly without fear or shame. The article was rejected by the Ganges webmaster who thought it a bit too controversial. He was very polite about it and I didn’t argue the point. Nevertheless, I found it odd that he didn’t think the boys from Ganges would want to be reminded of this darker side of the camp. Why would anyone not wish to talk about these things? they happened, they were a part of the Ganges system. Over the years the Ganges website has discussed many subjects, both good and bad, and the subject of pedophiles should not be something we should be ashamed of or afraid to talk about. We were not the ones responsible we were the helpless victims. I’m curious to know how many Ganges boys read my blog and I wonder if they agree with me or have a different point of view. Either way I would like to hear the views of other boys on this apparently untouchable subject. I believe the chain of command was aware but it was so prevalent throughout both senior and junior staff it was easier to just ignore. I think they felt comfortable knowing that a boy would never dare to accuse a senior officer of such a crime. And of course they would have been right back then, that was how the system worked.
We are not boys anymore, and I for one am not afraid to talk about this shameful side of HMS Ganges. I hope others will agree with me.
God Bless and keep reading.

Pedophiles at HMS Ganges is probably not what Ganges boys want to remember. Nevertheless, the camp had its share in the days when such things were never mentioned. Like all Ganges boys I’m proud to say I passed through those hard and often frightening times. I too, emerged as a well trained seaman and was well on my way to becoming a man. Ganges was in my opinion the best Naval training system in the land, maybe the world. Fifteen year old boys entered through the gates unable to talk care of themselves many unable to tie their shoes without Mothers help. They left as capable young men who could washed and iron their clothes, repaired clothing sewed on buttoms and badges. We could do dishes and cook our own food when necessary. In other words, not merely well trained seamen, we were trained for life in general. Sadly there was a blot on the Ganges system between some instructors and their innocent charges. This certainly didn’t apply to all instructors but there were a few that took advantage of our fear and compulsion to please. We were often naked while doing our laundry, a smack on the bare bum common place. We showered in a communal shower room and were inspected by instructors by standing in front of them legs apart and arms raised. We were required to turn and bend over as part of the inspection. One night I was crossing the Quarter Deck when I noticed something strange goings on in the mess at the top of the long covered way. Looking in the window I saw all the boys standing on the end of their beds their pajama bottoms around their ankles. Their instructor a Chief Petty Officer was walking up one side of the mess and down the other fondling the boys as he went. I was fairly sure he had been drinking but didn’t stay around for fear I’d get caught. We had a commissioned officer at the school of seamanship, one of his jobs was to test our piping abilities with a Bo’sun call. If we passed his test we could wear a Bu’sun chain with our uniform instead of a lanyard. Most boys saw the chain as a symbol of success and pride, and it was something I really wanted. I remember other boys who already had their chains telling me to go down to his office in the evening and be sure to wear gym shorts. At the time I wasn’t aware why wearing shorts was needed to play the bo’sun pipe. But I took the advice and off I went in gym shorts. I passed my test while the instructor had his hand in my shorts. I don’t think any of us completely understood what was happening, we knew it was wrong, but instructors were Gods and we never challenged them. If I had reported my experience at the seamanship school, I doubt I’d have been believed and I would certainly have become marked as a boy to be watched by instructors.
Ganges was without doubt the hardest year of my young life. The training was harsh and unrelenting. we rose at the crack of dawn and turned in nine each night. Cuts were the ultimate punishment, something I’m glad to say I never experienced. Cuts were administered for such crimes as AWOL or perhaps stealing. The punishment was carried out by the Master at Arms, the offending boy bent over a chair (in older times it was over a cannon) and the cane would raise welts on the boys bottom, one welt for each stroke of the cane. Cuts were usually in numbers of six and twelve. A medical officer was required to be in attendance for the punishment. Ganges is long gone today, and modern society would never tolerate such cruelty or punishment . However I survived and have built my life and character on the training I received at Ganges, whose motto was “Wisdom is Strength” At the entrance to the gym was the famous poem by Kipling “If” which ended with the line “you will be a man my son” Today, I can’t help thinking our politicians would do better if they were first trained at Ganges.
I am ashore for good now and grow wistful about my Royal Navy days, when I was young and a new adventure was ever over the horizon.

Stamped on my brain is my Official Number and an anchor where my heart is.

Numbers will never be the same again:

Uniforms: Number 1s 2s 3s 8s 10s 10As

Punishments: Number 9s, 14s

Even as times change, and young matelots take over from old seadogs, some things will never change.

The old days were always harder.

The recruits always looked younger.

Official Numbers were always smaller.

The waves were always bigger.

The girls were as good looking in Pompey (Portsmouth) as they were in Guzz (Devonport).

Your last ship was always the best.

If I haven’t been there, it doesn’t exist – or we blew it off the map.

Only a sailor knows, I was a sailor once and I know.

I look back and realise it was not just a job, it was a way of life. A life where shipmates were a family never to be forgotten.

I was part of the Royal Navy and the Royal Navy will always be part of me.

Cheers and keep reading.

HMS Ganges was a Royal Navy Boys Training Establishment located at the village of Shotley near Ipswich. I joined on the 14th March 1955, and had no idea what I had let myself in for. Twelve months training at what must have surely been the toughest training camp in the British Isles. I completed my twelve months plus three more as a instructor boy. In the 60 years since then I have always carried myself with pride and a sense of honour. I keep my hair cut, beard trimmed and my clothes neat and clean, Ganges training never leaves me. I joined the Ganges Association some ten years ago, made contact with some old shipmates and generally enjoyed being a part of a great organization. Sadly in the last four years this association has hit rock bottom. In fighting, back stabbing and general chaos within the ranks of these once proud boys. Its so sad, and so very difficult to understand from living so far from where my Naval career began. People have been sued, arrested, accused, blamed and it goes on and on. It seems members have formed groups, either for or against other parties. Monies have gone missing, lawyers have become involved, now the police are involved. I have no idea what went wrong, no idea who was responsible, and see no end in sight. I’m still proud to call myself a Ganges Boy, but no longer want to be a part of this association. Our motto is ‘Wisdom is Strength” but it appears to have been forgotten by many. The marvelous poem “IF” by Rudyard Kipling was a part of Ganges and it too seems forgotten by many.
Those in charge need to return our famous ship to an even keel. Then we can once again say “Ready Aye Ready”
Cheers and keep reading.

Paul G Allen, the co-founded of Microsoft, will offer use of his yacht to recover the bell of the battle cruiser HMS Hood, which was sunk in 1941, If recovered successfully, the bell will be used as a memorial to the ship and the 1,415 men who were lost when it was sunk by the battleship Bismarck in the North Atlantic. Hood is the largest Royal Navy vessel to have been sunk, causing the biggest loss of life suffered by any single British warship. “For those who lost their lives in HMS Hood, the recovery of her bell and its subsequent place of honour in the museum will mean that, well after the remains of Hood have gone, future generations will be able to gaze upon her bell and remember with gratitude and thanks the heroism, courage and personal sacrifice of Hood’s ship’s company who died in the service of their country.”
In 1941 Winston Churchill ordered the sinking of the Bismarck at all cost. Had this huge battleship successfully escaped into the North Atlantic she could have stood off and sunk convoys at will. Two days after the sinking of the Hood, Bismarck met her fate at the hands of the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm. Torpedo planes from HMS Ark Royal damaged her rudder making the ship un-maneuverable. She was then finished off by the big guns of the Royal Navy.
Rest in Peace brave sailors.
The plot thickens!!! just came across this second photo of the strange little vehicle believed to be an Austin Seven circa 1938. The civilian use appears to be perhaps at a holiday camp such as Billy Butlins?
Question is how did the navy get a hold of it?? Did the dept of Defense maybe take over a holiday camp during the war? Did a sailor nick it on a run ashore?(highly possible) but only if he could drive. Maybe my old shipmate Tony will know? maybe he can post the photos to the Ganges web site for me. I’m not sure how to post photos there. I also note, the trailer with the sailors in it looks to be the same one as the one in the rear in the other photo
I wonder what ever happened to the little vehicle??? guess we’ll never know.
Sunday the 6th May 2012 (First Sunday in May) is Battle of the Atlantic Sunday. The one day in the year we make special mention of this Battle. It began on the 3rd Sept 1939 and ended 8th May 1945. Churchill stated in 1941 this is the longest, largest and most complex Naval Battle in history. A total of 3500 merchant ship and 175 warships were lost, for the Germans 783 UBoats were lost. The photo I have posted is HMCS Sackville the last surviving corvette of the RCN. During the war Canada produce 400 of these tiny corvettes as escort vessels for the convoys. The RCN grew to be the worlds third largest navy after USN and RN. The vital convoys kept the British Isles in the war, Hitler had tried hard to starve England into surrender but failed thanks to the brave seaman of the Allied Navies. Remember these brave souls in a church prayer on Sunday. Bravo Zulu.
If you’d been at least twenty years old and a member of the Royal Navy prior to 31st July 1970 then it would have indeed been a black day! That was the day the last daily tot of rum was issued throughout the fleet of the Royal Navy. (Note – still issued on special occasions,Queens birthday etc). The Navy had issued a daily tot of rum for over 300 years, the end of a tradition. Probably not a bad decision though, many ranks, badges and buttons had been lost as a result of rum. Also, an inebriated sailor on duty in the nuclear missile room of a submarine might not be such a good idea. A sad but necessary change to Naval traditions. Pusser Rum was unique and exclusive to the Royal Navy, a single malt rum produced in the British Virgin Islands. In 1979 the brand was licensed to be sold to the general public. It has been incorrectly known as Nelsons Blood, but that is wrong, Brandy is actually Nelsons Blood. After the Battle of Trafalgar and Nelsons death his body was placed in a barrel of brandy to preserve it until the ship returned to
England. It is believed after his body was removed the sailors drank the brandy, which contained traces of Nelsons blood.
Oh! excuse me I have to go, they just piped “up spirits” its tot time again.

The boatswain’s pipe is one of the oldest and most distinctive pieces of personal nautical equipment and was once the only method other than human voice of passing orders to men on board ship.

A pipe or flute was used in the days on antiquity, by which the slaves of Greece and Rome kept stroke.

There is a record that the pipe was used in the crusade of 1248 when the English cross bowman were called on deck to attack by its signal. Shakespeare mentioned the pipe in the Tempest and Pepys refers to its use in naval notes.

In time the pipe came to be used as a badge of office, in some cases it was a badge of honour.

The Lord High Admiral carried a gold pipe on a chain around his neck. A silver pipe was used by high commanders as a badge of office or “whistle of command” in addition to the gold whistle of honour.

In the action off Brest on the 25th Apr 1513, between Sir Edward Howard, Lord High Admiral and son of the earl of Surrey, and the Chevalier Pregant de Bidoux, it is related that when the lord High Admiral was certain that he would be captured, he threw his gold whistle into the sea. The silver whistle of command was later found on his body.

The weight of a standard whistle of honour and names for its parts were designated by Henry VIII.

The monarch decreed that it should weigh 12 “oons” of gold (oon meaning ounce). The chain was to be of gold and to have an equivalent in gold ducats, the ducat being an unusaul gold coin formerly used in various European countries.

About 1671 it was referred to as Call, being known by in the Navy as Boatswain, pronounced “Bosun”, refers to the mate, warrant officer or petty officer in charge of boats rigging and ground tackle aboard a ship.

In old English the word “swain” meant servant of keeper. The later English term was boatswayn.

In the 17th century, British ships were required by law to carry three boats, The boat, The cock and the Skiff. The men in charge of them were called boatswains, coxswains and skiffswain.

The boatswain was the officer in charge of rigging, sails and sailing equipment. Men were rigidly trained, almost like sheepdogs to respond immediately to the piping of the call, it was easier to hear the high pitched tones of the call as a shouted order could not be heard in a storm.

The use of a call eliminates confusion and misunderstanding. there is a call for every activity, such as the hoisting and lowering of boats, argo, and even burial at sea. Of interest, only the boatswain’s mate is permitted to salute with the left hand, assuming the right hand is used with the call.

The call should be held between the index finger and thumb, with the thumb on or near the shackle.

The side of the bouy rests against the palm of the hand and the fingers close to the gun and the bouy hole in the position to throttle the exit of air from the bouy.

I’m proud to say I still have my Bosun’s call from my Navy days, and can still pipe, although I admit I have forgotten most of the calls.
Cheers and keep reading.

Oh Boy! I guess we don’t appreciate what others do until its left for us to do. The us in this case is me, Linda is in Halifax babysitting our grandchildren and have I been busy. Its 11 am and here are the things I have done so far. Dogs got me up at 6.40am, made coffee and a bowl of corn flakes, fed the dogs and the cats. Put medication in Bella’s eyes, cleaned out the two litter bowls. Stripped my bed and did a laundry. Had a shower and dressed, ironed the clothes (always do ironing, Navy Trg) washed the dishes, prepared the wood stove ready to light. Turn off pellet stove for cleaning, while it cooled took the dogs for a 50 minute walk back through the fields. I ‘m home now and writing this blog before I get to the pellet stove. Better get moving the temperature is dropping in here down to 60 degrees. Its a busy day, but hey! an old salt like me can handle it.
Cheers and keep reading. Oh! nearly forgot, took out the garbage too.

The first day of 2012 being a Sunday, I began by attending church. During the service I was thinking of what my blog should be about.( I hear you! should have been paying attention to the sermon right!)! Well, maybe I was, because I’m going to blog about a few of my early church experiences.
First story- In 1949 at eleven years of age I attended the local Church of England in the village of Brighstone, Isle of Wight. It was an old stone church and the pulpit also stone was set high above the congregation. Perhaps to encourage our enthusiasm it was rumoured the beams in the church came from a pirate ship, also an unmarked grave in the graveyard was supposedly that of a pirate. On this particular Sunday I was partly listening to a very dry sermon, I thought I heard the vicar made a joke and feeling duty bound, laughed aloud, unfortunately it wasn’t a joke! and I spent the rest of that Sunday in my room as punishment.
Second story – As a boy sailor (15yrs) at HMS Ganges in 1955 I had to attend Sunday Church Parade every Sunday. The strange thing was how we were divided into three denominations. Roman Catholic, next Church of England and the remainder (including me) were marched off to the Free Church of Scotland. I never understood how the Admiralty decided this system.
My third and final church story started in Gibraltar in 1961 whilst aboard the submarine Taciturn. We were about to leave for Plymouth on a very wet Friday afternoon , a Naval Padre requested we give him a lift back home. Naturally we were pleased to oblige this very excited Padre who had never been aboard a submarine before.
In the first two days whilst transiting on the surface the Padre went everywhere exploring the boat and asking endless questions. He also enthusiastically promoted his planned church service for Sunday morning in the forward torpedo room. Those of us off duty at that time promised to attend. Saturday night and into early Sunday morning we entered the Bay of Biscay, a place of notoriously rough seas. The Padre was a tall man and a submarine is better suited to short people. By 1000hrs Sunday morning still on the surface we were running in heavy weather. As promised we gathered in the torpedo room at the prescribed time. It was something we rarely experienced at sea other than when the Skipper held an occasional service. The poor Padre arrived, nursing a variety of bumps and bruises that obviously resulted from a very unstable deck. He was also clearly suffering from severe sea sickness. Nevertheless, a man of great faith he did his best to conduct the service, it was however, a service of one prayer and one hymn. Surely the shortest service I have ever attended, maybe the shortest in Naval history. Nice memories though and here I am years later still regularly attending church (but I don’t march and haven’t been sent to my room lately) Happy New Year Everyone.
Cheers and keep reading

This is a story from a Ganges Boy that seems appropriate at this special time of year. I’d like to share it with you.

Many years ago two young boys were called upon to serve their country . They met at a place called Shotley Gate, on a stone ship named HMS Ganges . After many months of training these now young men were drafted to their fist ship , on active service . In the following weeks the young men sailed south to warmer seas , and a bond was formed . One warm and calm night under a full moon disaster struck . The ship was lost , both young men began to swim towards a distant island , unaware of what was to come . One was unscathed , the other badly wounded they fought on , helping one another as daylight approached . Once ashore and with no other shipmates to be seen , the uninjured sailor picked up and carried his friend to safety , many miles over an unforgiving desert landscape , no food or water , just a will to survive and fight another day . Many days passed until they arrived at an oasis , the fitter of the two left the other under the shade of a palm tree with a supply of water and dates . With a guilty conscience and life slowly dwindling away he set off to find help for his friend . With God on his side and a heart of oak the young man reached his destination , he told his rescuers where he had left his friend and was then transported off of the island and sent back home . Many years passed , forty or more ,never again did he see or hear of his friend . Then one warm and calm day he attended a reunion , HMS Ganges had long been closed , her buildings and mast were showing their age and neglect , the whitewashed stones , the holy parade ground unkempt and sad , Nelson hall now cold empty and full of ghosts from his past . With a sadden heart he spoke to new found friends , swapped stories of days passed and asked about his old friend . Over in the corner and sat by himself he spotted a face , a face from days passed . With tears in his eyes and a lump in his throat he spoke to the man . For forty or more years I have searched every street, in the hope that one day we would once again meet . Through gritted teeth and a face that now frowned his friend replied with a voice that shook the ground , ” why did you leave me to die on that day , I spotted the footprints when they carried me away . One set of footprints all of the way , if it was not for my rescuers I would not be here today ” . With a voice full of sadness the old man replied , yes one set of footprints and they were mine . I carried you to safety and went to find help . They said they would find you and bring you back home , and that’s where I waited with a heart full of hope . But this is what happens when stories are told , parts that are missing and some parts untold . Friendship’s destroyed and forgotten as we get old . If only we remembered the wise words we were told , don’t listen to gossip and don’t be led astray for the rest of our lives we should remember the Ganges way . Wisdom is strength .

A merry Christmas and a happy and sensible new year to all Ganges boys and their families , and absent friends .

Cheers and keep reading.

I’m a bit remiss in posting this reminder of the famous Battle of Trafalgar that took place on the 21st October 1805. Lord Nelson’s fleet defeated the combine forces of the French and Spanish fleets. Losing this battle ended Napoleon’s ambitions of invading England, and ensured supremacy of the Royal Navy for many years to come. Having been a member of the Royal Navy I look on this date in history with great pride.
Sorry for the lateness of this post! my only excuse is the running aground of Astute and the demise of the Ark Royal taking my attention. Trafalgar Day was almost missed, but not quite!! In memory and honour of Lord Nelson and his victory at Trafalgar I will print his last prayer that he recorded in his log shortly before the battle.

May the Great God,whom I worship, grant to my Country and for the benefit of Europe in general a great and glorious victory, and may no misconduct in anyone tarnish it, and may humanity after victory be the predominant feature of the British Fleet. For myself, individually, I commit my life to Him who made me, and may His blessings light upon my endeavours for serving my Country faithfully. To Him I resign myself and the just cause which is entrusted to me to defend. Amen, Amen, Amen

The history of the Royal Navy still inspires in me a great pride in that I too served under the White Ensign.

As you know I have been hunting for another British car and to date they have been very thin on the ground. However I think I have found just what I’m looking for. We are off to New Brunswick on Friday to see the car and if all goes well drive it home. I’m going to keep you in suspense about the year-model etc until or if I buy it. After all I’m in suspense myself waiting for Friday to arrive. I will tell you its a Rover!! and I’m glad I didn’t buy the Volvo, irishvolvo just didn’t have the same ring to it as irishrover!!
Cheers and keep reading.
