I have now reluctantly resolved to the fact that I will not be leaving Korea for Christmas or New Years. Its seems the gods of budget airlines are not shining down on the land of the “mourning” calm right now. Therefore I will be slowly deteriorating into a state of insane desperation for just a little piece flexibility and freedom. If you don’t hear from me in January you will probably find me Soju bottle in hand, kim chi seeping through my pores, walking barefoot with an empty stare. Reminiscing the hip city life I once led in far away land with nice weather, oh how my laissez-faire days seem so distant.

Monday In moonlight as pale as his face, he crawls from the slime and murk of the swamp, exchanging

Monday
In moonlight as pale as his face, he crawls from the slime and murk of the swamp, exchanging a good deal of his humanity for muck. Feeling wooden and cold he knows that there is something missing but lacks the intelligence to determine what it might be. There is a familiarity to it all, a haze of déjà vu rising over the stagnant waters.

Tuesday
Climbing steep trestles, he follows the tracks out of the swamp and into the jungle. Five men huddle around a bubbling Mulligan stew smoking hand rolled squares and passing a bottle. One notices him from the shadows, invites him to call in. They seem unsurprised by his nakedness but silently sort through bindles and bags, each gathering glad rags to help clothe the strange and empty eyed man. The fire makes him feel odd as it seems utterly foreign yet kindles a melancholy nostalgia. One of the hobos asks if he’s a fool. He responds by saying he doesn’t know, he was only born yesterday. By the power of their ignoble court, they christen him.

Wednesday
Just outside of the jungle, he encounters two men wearing prison stripes and ankle irons on a tractor path between fields of corn. They leap at him and try to hack away at his limbs but he is unharmed. Enraged, he crushes the windpipe of the larger while the smaller scratches at the dusty ground with knees and fingernails, unable to flee his fate. Much like Solomon Grundy, married to myth and predestination.

Thursday
He awakens the next night long after the sun has fallen from the sky, feeling more frigid and false than ever. He watches passing cars from the roadside envious of the lives they must have, feeding the fire of his rage but never warming his body. Something is still missing and though unsure what it may be, he is certain it must still be sleeping in the slime of the swamp.

Friday
He tries to make his way home, all the while it sings and calls out to him as a mother calls for a lost child, but grows more weak and confused. He shambles aimlessly through the day and by nightfall is growing too tired to continue but just before reaching a moment of total surrender finds himself in a quiet and derelict train yard.

Saturday
He is awakened by hands lifting him, thin wiry hands attached to thin wiry arms, nearly a dozen. The hobos toss him into a Pullman and leap aboard just as it pulls away, catching a westbound cannonball. The landscape passes by like the dreams that haunt his fevered mind and he can’t tell the difference between the two, bleeding freely together. Night must be falling he thinks as the darkness rises without the moon to keep it at bay.

Sunday
The sun is risen but the swamp is still shadowed and unknowable as the train rattles across the pine trestle. His body is pushed from the boxcar funeral home and drops soundlessly into the water below, buried again like so much gold or seed or spore.

I’m a big fan of the lock_version “magic” field in Rails that provides optimistic locking (for almost 0 cost to the programmer). However recently I’ve been having problems with optimistic locking on forms that contain multiple models (I’ve been doing this in Hobo, but you could equally achieve the same thing with something similar to the Complex Forms RailsCast). Every time I tried to update an associated model through my multi-model form ActiveRecord would throw a StaleObjectError, even when I was in development mode on my own machine. Looking into the logs I could see that my app was first deleting the updated associated model, and then trying to perform the update *after* deleting it! This was failing horribly, made no sense and was confusing the hell out of me as to why it was doing something so strange.

After trying to recreate the problem in a toy application I realised that it was being caused by implementing the Comparable mixin in the model that had the problem. However, after a little googling I discovered that ActiveRecord already supports Comparable, and including it in my model seemed to be overwriting something that ActiveRecord was relying on during updates.

Solution

Remove include Comparable from your ActiveRecord models.

Public transit is entertaining. I say that in the sickest way possible.

During my approximate 6 hours per week of commute between Tempe and Downtown Phoenix, I see more crazy than a hypothetical love child of Rush Limbaugh and Lady GaGa. Sometimes it’s frightening, but more often it’s ridiculous and incredible.

In my near year of riding the Light Rail, I’ve often found myself texting friends and families photographic proof of the characters I encounter. I decided to spread the love by posting my lurky Light Rail pics to this blog. Get excited.

From extremely common Light Rail Fails– A hobo in an “I love Jesus” hat verbally harassing a 12-year-old, a pair of overweight teens swapping shirts mid-transit, the drunk chick who can’t help but pole dance and consequently face plant when the Rail starts moving, to Light Rail Wins– A wheel-chair bound Priest who gave out bags of candy corn to passengers on Halloween and the hobo who serenaded me and asked for my hand in marriage and a lifetime together with me in his box, there’s never a dull day of LR riding.

This blog is past due for Light Rail Lovers and Loathers alike.

Happy Railing,

Robby dropped me off with the folks. They didnt know what hit them because i had told them earlier

Robby dropped me off with the folks. They didnt know what hit them because i had told them earlier in the week i was going to hitchhike through Canada. But i showed up and surprised them. The way i see it, why make plans? Plans can fall though and leave people hurt. If you dont know i am coming you can’t be discouraged or disheartened when i dont show up. And seriously, Who doesnt like surprises? Probably the same people who like mustard…

Like most times i go home, nothing is going on. I hung out with a few friends, painted a boat that we would later almost sink, saw family, and “camped” with the folks. Ryan bertuzzi decided that he wanted to build a sailboat one day. So to start he figured he would build a dingy first. Good idea i thought. However when we took it on the reservoir behind my house we realized that it was not exactly seaworthy. It leaked pretty fast and we almost sunk the damn thing.

I went camping with the folks if that is what you can call it. They have a giant 5th wheel camper. It has everything. But it as nice because we all rode around on our bicycles. It was nice to take Bernice out for a real ride. I had been riding a lot since i had been home but no more than 5 or 6 miles at a time. You know, grocery runs, beer runs, bar crawls. It is funny though because people in small towns think you are insane if you ride a bike around when you have a car. So it was nice to go on a long trail ride.

I was getting tired of being home so i decided i would surprise misty for her birthday. She was having a party at the park in northpark. I kept talking about it and finally dad talked me into going. The ticket was 100 dollars to go from Pittsburgh pa to San Diego ca. I packed my pack and hit the airport. A few short hours later i was in San Diego being picked up by mason. Why do many of my San Diego stories start with mason?

I kept a pretty low profile in order to keep the secret that i was there. No one knew save mason and Elise. So we went to the ruby the first night and the second day we went to street scene. No one i knew was gong to be there. We saw some incredible bands while we were there. Eventually we got word that misty was there. Her brother told me and i asked him not to tell her. He said, “Ok, no problem matt.” I just laughed.

Modest mouse started playing and mason went to find misty and take her to a place we said to meet. As they were walking together i came up from behind and surprised misty. Mason asked her if she knew the weird guy following them and she turned around and looked at me and almost said no. She had to give me a double take! As soon as she saw though she jump hugged me and we watched the rest of the modest mouse set.

The next morning she made breakfast and I got all dressed up for operation shock and awwww. The van opened up and nightbeast came strolling out. Everyone greeted him with hugs and yelled “mason!” or “nightbeast! You must be hot in there mason.” After a few minutes mason came walking up and everyone got a little confused. I took off the nightbeast head and everyone was super surprised. It was odd because Katy had said as i walked up, “those arent masons feet.”. No one noticed it until a few minutes after i was out of nightbeast.

The rest of the BBQ went awesome. The food was incredible, the conversations friendly (save one snarky lady), a water balloon war broke out between two factions of allies, and the beer was cold. Oh how i missed you San Diego. It was strange being back. I know it sounds pretentious but sometimes i feel like i have moved forward and grown a lot.

The next few days were filled with reunions, pools, new meetings, and errands. Mace was going to hit the road with me for a little while. Before we left San Diego Katy and i went on a date. Lets just say it did not go well. Went to a sushi restaurant that is renowned for its amazing fish and she had veggies, she almost killed a dog, and i almost lost my mind. It was a good thing it happened though. I was staring to get a bad case of the puppy dog’s and now i was cured.

I hung out at the Lafayette the whole week pretty much. Cheap beer, pretty girls, and a pool. Hell yes. One night I got picked up by an unnamed friend and we went to a bar. Her new boyfriend showed up and at the end of the night we all went home and i had the awesome experience of sleeping on a cat hair covered couch, battling cats all night as well as the sound of sex.

Seriously people, if you have a friend staying over and you are making him sleep on a cat hair covered couch at least keep it in you pants for one night. It is just adding insult to injury. “Hey, heres a couch covered in the physical representation of a lonely spinsters awkward coping mechanism, and by the way in case you weren’t feeling lonely and sad enough, I am going to go have sex 10 feet away from you knowing that my walls are thin because i always bitch about it to you.” Goddamnit.

Mason and i got ready one morning and hit the 805N on ramp off of adams ave. LA was our goal. And we would be in LA that night.

Canada was tougher to get in than a nuns panties. Rob and i had passports, legit backgrounds, and the address where we were staying in while we were in Canada, and it was still hard. We pull up and the officer there immediately sends us into customs. I can’t blame him really, he saw a silver focus that was beat up and was full of shit with a hippy looking dude that smelled like patchouli and the other was a gnarly looking dude with fresh dried blood on him and a seeping superglue fixed cut in his head. Ok i would have pulled us over too.

We pull into customs and they search us hard but eventually let us go. We continue northeast towards Stratford where a bbq was awaiting us. The BBQ was a few close friends and beers. They all played and some sang along if the words were known. We went out with the motto of “tonight….we drink!”

We walked a few miles to the bar (i love canadians) and i sang “In the air tonight” and rob came up halfway through and sang with me. I met a guy named joe who took me and a few girls outside to smoke some herb.

We walk outside and light up. 3 hooters and a bowl circled 5 of us. I was smoking a doobie when a cop rolls up and says “heeeey, put that doobie out eh.”. I put it out on a wall behind me and asked “Oh sorry, I thought it was legal. It isnt?”. He looked around at the rest of the group dissapointedly and said “Awww you guys know better. Smoke that in the alley eh.” They said, “sorry your right.” and we all walked into the alley. Once there we lit back up and the same cop rolls on us again. This time he drives past slowly and tells me “Hey i almost forgot. have a good time in Canada eh.”.

The next few days were awesome, Jon creeden, the ghostwrite, and jesse LeBourdais (singer of cambridge), played at shows in Stratford, Ottawa, Toronto, trois revierre, Quebec, and london. We said farewell and hit the road. America bound….

The week had left rob and i pretty crushed. We were just so tired. We came back to the states to rest our weary and wicked heads down. We drove all the way to the Poconos to see rob’s girlfriend. We drove all dinner and we drove all night. We got into stroutsburgh pa around 2am. We drank a few beers and passed out.

The next day we decided to tube down the broadhead river. Let me stop and say, in case you dont know, what tubing is. Tubing is a hill folk activity that comprises of taking giant black truck intertubes down a leisurely flowing river that has swimming holes along it as well as bringing a separate (arguably most important) tube for the cheap beer cooler.

We had none of these things! The river was fast, shallow, and full of rebar. The beers were in shopping bags that ripped immediately. The tubes were all walmart special tubes. And there was one swimming hole that was more of a deep(er) spot. We went over a cement dam, Got banged up and bruised. It was anything but leisurely.

The whole gang, Robby, Mallory, mike, erin, jenn, brista, and I decided to go to a bar and eat. I hadn’t eaten in a few days which will explain the next set of circumstances in motion. We got into the bar after smoking a joint and i went up to the front after having a sip of beer to order food. The room started spinning and i got really light headed. I went to sit down and spilled a few drinks. As i got up to go get some fresh air it was lights out. I woke up on the floor with a splitting headache and bloody chin that needed stitches. They helped me outside and after a few minutes i felt fine. I must have fainted because i was so hungry and beat up from the river. Broadhead river one, Sam farraday zero.

The next day we drove to ebensburg a few days later so i could see my folks. It had been a few months since i had seen them but it felt like a lifetime ago.

The next few days in Cleveland were pretty uneventful. Justin and i didnt really get to hangout too

The next few days in Cleveland were pretty uneventful. Justin and i didnt really get to hangout too much because he was working so much. It’s not like he can just take time off like i can. So i got some writing done and prepared myself by relaxing.

Robby Lester was scheduled to play a show at The phoenix cafe on detroit avenue while i was there. It was literally 4 blocks from justins house. Coincident…..I think not! So i woke up one morning, said goodbye to Justin and walked around the area and saw Robby at the show.

His name is Robby Lester. He plays in an acoustic project called the ghostwrite. It is just him and he uses no amplification. Frankly it is because he broke hi volume knob off at 11. You either get 0 or 11. We caught up lightly and he played a show with some other kids and they were all really good.

Afterwards we went to a house called the milk crate and hung out and drank some beer, smoked some weed, and had some good conversation. There was a guy there that was a self-titled revolutionary. He was interning at the white house and talked about what he was going to do when he brings the revolution.

The next morning we rolled into Lansing MI and played a show at Basement 411. What a great venue. The kids were awesome and the guys that ran the place have a really good head on their shoulders. It might be around for some time. There names are jake and sprout. Look them up if you need a show. After the show we all went to some random house where there was an old lady who talked about crack tasting yucky and some crust punks, and surprisingly great conversation about copyright issues.

The next morning we headed for grand rapids MI. Once there we met up with robbys old friend Jason and his friend Megan. They were from detroit. The annoying thing about some detroit people is that they love the fact that they are from detroit because it makes them tough and street smart. Jason was not like that, Megan was.

The show was pretty hectic. It was at this bar that was super wierd. On one side was a pool bar and the other side was the venue. There were a lot of young asshole college kids there and rob started to get drunk and angry. Everyone was talking and no one was watching the show. There were some young punk kids there and Robby wanted to kill em. On the way into the bar another guy felt robs rage.

There was an upper cut from hell and it sent Robby flying backwards. I thought it was game over. Robby popped back up and delivered a massive hay maker followed by 3 or 4 quick jabs as the guy was falling backwards. I ran inside and grabbed Ryan and we all went out and grabbed rob and went inside. His knees, elbows, and forehead were all messed up.

The cops showed up and apologized to rob and they left. They actually said welcome to grand rapids at one point. It was crazy. So we left the show and went back to Ryan’s house and we patched up Robby with some super glue while watching the adventures of flapjacks.

In the morning we headed to my favorite place in the entire world. Canada.

Why do you let society drag you so far away from your true nature? All your little doo-dads and ipod

Why do you let society drag you so far away from your true nature? All your little doo-dads and ipods and tv’s are only slowly prying you out of mother natures grip. You are becoming disconnected with the Earth and all the Universe has to offer our brilliant souls. Cut loose. Who needs all those posessions? All those expensive items that you can’t use without a wall plug to charge it up? Wake up, my zombie masses. See what you have to gain in a random conversation with a stranger. I got criticized a lot when I skipped out of Asheville. For what? For listening to the call of the Universe and dropping my things and taking only what I could carry on my back. For wanting to see what was on the other side of this landmass, and everything in between. For balancing out my soul and experiencing love-filled energy flowing into and through me by simple interaction with aware strangers and comunicating with Gia and the elements of this world. You can be angry with me all you wish, but it just shows off your own ignorance and anxiety. You mean I may not be able to contact anyone for months? oh no! you mean I wont be able to pop a CD into my stereo so I can listen to someone else’s over sold music in order to calm down my anxiety instead of meditating on it and balancing out naturally? Dear goodness! that’s completely unacceptable! Just let go. Please. See what this world throws at you.

My life isnt so hard now, like some of you assume. Hell, I ate 3 full healthy meals yesterday free: Breakfast- Eggs, bacon, toast and orange juice (i cooked it myself) Lunch- homegrown/homemade vegetable soup, bread, and oranges. Dinner- Deep fried turkey, greens, potatoe soup, sweet potato pie, bread. This is aside from the 5 slices of pizza Leonardos gave us after dark and the random snack food we munched on all day. See, I’m far from starving. Im living a life of luxury in my eyes. Not to mention, the weather here in Florida is mid 80’s during the day and 60’s at night. And rain? What rain. Ha, even if it DID rain, we sleep on this sidewalk with a roof over it, so we’re all set. I just got doen drinking coffee and watching the news and eating dounut holes. And now im checking my mail on a laptop. See, you don’t need money and cool stuff to live comfortably. Step out of that mindset. Set yourself FREEEEEEEEEEEEEE Please? at least think about it. And stop criticizing me for my lifestyle, when you know nothing about it. I have reconnected myself with nature and my universe, and if that scares you, then all hope is lost for you.

Should I even start discussing all the secret messed up things going on in FEMA right now? Hm, no I think that might be to much at this time =) haha. I love you all.

The day was august 2nd. I was rocketing east with a trucker by the name of Vernon Mack. He was an interesting man for sure. We had much in common and we carried on great conversation. We dropped off a load and picked another one up somewhere in Mass. I told him i was trying to get to Cleveland by the 8th to see a good friend play a show. He said if i didnt mind sticking around a few days he could put in a message to go there. I like the company so i decided to travel with him.

We hit Connecticut, new jersey, Massachusetts, new york, Pennsylvania, and Ohio by the time our travels ended. At night i would sleep in the cab on the floor. It was pretty comfortable and i didnt mind sleeping on a floor. After all, I usually sleep in the woods or in the dirt. The days traveled by pretty quickly because of the good conversation and music. He got a message finally to get to Akron.

As we got to Akron he stopped on the side of the road and let me out. I said thank you and we parted ways. Meeting people like Vernon Mack and the ton of others (i will have a shout out page soon) make traveling the way i do worth it. It really is the only reason i am out here doing it. people love people and i am no exception. The USA truck hummed away from me as i stood on an exit ramp waving.

I got off the exit ramp and immediately realized that i had just been dropped off in the ghetto. I proceeded to walk through because there was nothing i could do at this point. As i started walking a guy jumped off his porch and approached me fast. He asked me if i had a smoke and i said sure and then he asked what i was doing. I told him i was trying to get downtown to catch a bus up to Cleveland. He said he would walk with me and show me the way.

As we walked he told me about selling crack and having hoes that are out of control. You know, normal stuff that bothers us all. We got downtown and he took me to the bus stop and told the lady inside to give me a ticket to Cleveland and she said sure thing jay and took off as we bumped fists. Told me to keep keeping it unreal.

I got on the free bus and headed towards Cleveland. I met another ghetto looking man on the bus and he gave me directions to the area of town i was going to and scored me a transfer ticket that he had in his pocket. I kept thinking that Cleveland is all about not judging a book by its cover. As i transferred buses and made my way west of the city i got into Lakewood and stopped by justin’s house but no one was home. I eft a note in the screen door and stopped in a bar up the street for a cold beer and sandwich (pronounced sammich) the bartender was a very pretty girl who let me use her cell phone and laptop. I called Justin and he said he would have to come in after work.

I sat around and talked with the pretty bartender and locals there and had a few free shots and a complimentary beer or two or three. When Justin came we all hugged and were yelling and laughing and hopping from one bar to another. By the time we got back to justin’s house i was absolutely wrecked. I went straight for the toilet and puked hard. I found the bed and fell asleep (passed out is more like it). This is how my first day in Cleveland ended. Cleveland is a rocking town apparently.

When I checked a few twitter-pages of our favorite Twilight actors a few days ago I found this on the Alex Meraz site:
What a sad story! He thinks this girl wants to give him roses and that’s just so cute, but then finds out she actually fancies Kellan. Oh what a disappointment! Honestly girl, I got no idea who you are but you meet Alex Meraz, basically ignore him and ask him to pass the flowers on to his co-star? That’s it? Haven’t you realized what a gem Alex himself is? Yes, he is married and a dad, I know. But the fact that you bring roses for your favorite celebrity gives me the impression that you’re at most 10 years old. No way you’re older than 12. So a wife and a child shouldn’t really bother you at this point… Alex knows all that martial arts/capoeira stuff, he’s got awesome abs (almost as great as Taylor’s), he’s an amazing actor (at least I hope so, we’ll see in New Moon…he’d better be!)… So what is it that draws you to Kellan instead? Is it his taste in literature because you heard he has read “The Purpose Driven Life”? No, as I mentioned you’re not even a teenager yet so literature probably doesn’t interest you anyway…

Kellan sporting a cute dog... shirtless

The fact that he runs around shirtless and looks so damn athletic? Oh no, wait, I know! It’s that cute dog running along with him in that picture. Yes, that must be it. The dog is what drew your attention to the pic in the first place and then you discovered Kellan! After that you decided to google him (Yeah, you might be pretty young but everyone knows how to use google these days…). And what did you find out? That he’s taken what seem to be prom pictures with all his female fans. And you’re so looking up to the older girls in their dazzling evening dresses and all the tiara business that you finally chose Kellan as your number one celebrity. You thought to present him with flowers would be a great idea because they fit in so well with all that prom night thing. So you googled the meaning of different kinds of flowers and this was what stuck out to you:

Rosebuds symbolize beauty, youth and a heart innocent of love or: “You are young and beautiful.” Red rosebuds mean “pure and lovely” and white rosebuds signify girlhood or “too young to love.” The moss rosebud stands for confessions of love.

So you chose a colorful bouquet of rosebuds to give to Kellan. But then he wasn’t there so you unfortunately had to give your present to his co-star and ask him to pass it along for you. What a shame you didn’t really pay attention to Alex Meraz. He was quite disappointed, really. He liked the rosebuds. A lot… You shouldn’t have ignored him, I wouldn’t. I would do him. Sorry, got carried away… So please, next time bring a few flowers for Alex as well, can’t stand to see him sad… Cause hey, he’s trying to make all the fans happy the whole time so that would just be fair. He even went out to visit all the Twi-hards waiting in line for the New Moon premiere, camping on the street for the last 4 days. He took like a million pictures and signed countless Twilight/New Moon related pieces like books, DVDs and stuff.

Alex Meraz, smoking hot with and without Dolce & Gabbana

Well, I never understood why someone would let an actor sign a book he had no part in writing, but I will make an exception here. Cause these girls have been living out there waiting for the red carpet event for the last couple of days without a comfy bed or any kind of bathroom. So if the only thing they had at hand was their New Moon book because they took it with them to read it again in order to prepare for the movie… In that case I’m not gonna say anything against it this time. Alex, you’re so down with the fangirls! Damn, why wasn’t I there? Oh right, because I promised myself to never camp out on the streets living like a hobo just to see a bunch of dressed-up celebrities. But then again… maybe… if I had known Alex Meraz would come to show me some love (that’s what she said)…Sorry, got carried away again. So that was so nice of you to visit all those girls who spent quite an uncomfortable time just to see you walk down the red carpet in your Dolce & Gabbana suit tonight looking smoking hot. Oh yes, I bet you will… Team Paul! Or rather Team Alex! Team Paulex? Whatever…

a

Off to buy Alex a cherry blossom bouquet (figure out what that means)

So here in case you don’t believe me… or in case you just want to swoon a bit more over Alex Meraz with me, watch one of the “Alex showing some love” videos:

We rolled into Lowell Mass pretty late in the afternoon and decided to hit a bar where a lot of Katy’s friends were going to be. We rolled into the bar called the werthin i think. It is supposedly famous because Kerouac and Poe and a lot of other famous writers used to chill there.

She had a friend there that was setting up some sort of open mic night and there was some good stuff and some bad stuff too. He played guitar and was pretty good. He had bright eyes and rampant arrogance as a coping mechanism. He reminded me of Raleigh cosgrove. Raleigh was…..well that is a long story and i will save it for another time.

We hung out in Lowell for the next few days and i helped her move out of her apartment. Lowell consisted of packing up boxes, having sex, seeing the sights, and smoking weed. It was a pretty great time if you ask me.

One night her roommate gave us tickets to a show in boston on the 1st of august. It was at the paradise on commonwealth ave. Rx Bandits were playing. They were incredible ! They rock 4 drum sets now and they are much much much less ska. In fact, they are not ska at all.

After the show we decided to go down to government square and see metric play for free. They are just as good live as they are on a cd. We met her friend lisa there and after the free show we went back to her house and at midnight they packed up a birthday bowl for me. 25 years old. Damn it feels good to be a quarter of a century.

The next morning I hit the road. I wanted to spend my 25th birthday on the road. I felt invincible so i decided to just walk down the freeway. This is never a good way to get picked up and cops will arrest you for it. But it was my birthday so screw it.

Within a few minutes a big rig pulled over! I have never even heard of this happening before. I ran and ran till i got there and jumped in. I was huffing and puffing as i said hello and he introduced himself as vernon mack.

The story behind the scene:

London. Some might say that it is the ‘Capital of Europe’. Others might call it the ‘Headquarters for Binge Drinkers’. Although the consumption of alcohol is now banned on public transport, in an attempt at taking a stronger stance against public drinking; it has not improved anti-social behaviour, nor morals. On the streets of London, weekend nights are filled with the dazzling colours and sparkles of the young, and the older, heading out to their favourite clubs and pubs for “a night on the pull.” In other words, they have dressed their best in search of that one person who will bring more smiles to their, often materialistically based, worlds. This show of life is portrayed in the image above, but without the glitter.

In this cosmopolitan capital, that holds over 7 million individuals, loneliness it not a stranger to any of us. Yet whilst this story has been heard a thousand times over, nothing has changed. The treasure hunt never ends. The only thing that has is fashion, and even that, like history, repeats itself. As vulnerability increases, especially for the girls, in the encompassing fear of never finding anyone, money is spent on looking good. But as The Beatles so eloquently put it, money can’t buy you love.

Generalisations and levels of materialism aside, I do believe that in search of our counterpart, “… we are all the same.”

The male subject is the most fashionable. In that sense, he is slightly out-of-place. Nevertheless, his “pedestrian” look and dark clothing have a magnetic effect on the women surrounding him, as they come in from all angles. The fact that he has more style than the female subjects implies that he has more to spend then they do. Hence rendering an atmosphere of gold-digging, which involves Fashion. This is then interwoven with one of love’s tools: Attraction. Both almost always come hand-in hand. What aids attraction? Fashion.

Perhaps these girls are looking for Love? Or Fun? Most likely Money?? Or maybe just someone interesting to talk to? Who knows! Nonetheless, upon their dark street, all collide and come together in one moment.

In a flurry of love, fashion, and the question of money, the colour red is used to symbolise drink and women for the male. Whilst on the other side of the scale, the bright red found on all three female subjects is evidence of a commonality between them, the search for Love.

“Love has changed little over the centuries. Each soul searches for it. In that sense, we are all the same.” – Brida, by Paulo Coelho. Today I find that it is the ways and means that you obtain love which have become warped. It is behind the scenes that you find reality in the darkness. With this snapshot, it does not matter who you are, where you go shopping, how you dress, or how much you spend that counts. It is in the moment that you find love, be it spontaneously on the street, and what YOU do that changes your world.

FLW.

Review remarks by Manuela Zanotti: “Slightly out of focus, good circular movement, looks like a lot of fun.”

Review remarks by Ian Macauley: “Slightly naive because of the front-on-flash.”
