The possibilities for cameos are infinite and hilarious, most are well known personalities, well known to the readers of Hola for appearing in Hola. Themselves have tried, and failed to carve a career in cinema. Some are indispensable:

Tired of the dreadful stagnation of Porto (a Port city in the north of Portugal, for the readers who are not football fans), I went to Madrid a while ago. My impression of the city was formed by several 1 or 2 night stops on route elsewhere in my glorious inter-railing days. Top priorities during those brief stays were El Prado Museum and the quaint Pequeño Cine Studio cinema. In my mind, Spain’s capital is more colorful and theatrical than anything found on these nostalgic shores. This I owe to Pedro Almodóvar.

I was not expecting to find drag queens at every corner when I alighted at Atocha. But still, the reality was sobering, immigrants were everywhere. Immigrants, from the Andes and the Amazons, who are yet to feature in an Almodóvar film, despite the director’s penchant for cleaning ladies and oddballs. His characters live in the post-Franco decade of his young adulthood, not today’s multicultural reality.

Broken Embraces, his last film, shows the director moving further away from reality. He delves into the unconsciousness of film making, with a film within a film about actors and directors, which has, unsurprisingly, been poorly received.

Insolent panache, so typical of the 80s, made him a legend. Today you already hear the critics saying that his best is well behind. Not necessarily. I’m not an unconditional fan of the director, only rarely do his films rise above aesthetics. But I can appreciate an auteur. Almodóvar tackles themes common to all primates, like jealousy, status, desire and decay.

Just like Fellini did before him, the Spanish director began by romanticizing his surroundings, elevating the everyday life of women, the mothers and actresses that he adored, to the level of opera. They are the creatures of dark habits and nervous breakdowns, fetishisized beyond meaning. In his past two films they are actually dead.

I suppose there is only so much you can accomplish with the aid of a psychoanalyst. Yet those women can still be found in Spain, and you need not look beyond the pages of Hola magazine.

Quite how Almodóvar overlooked this subject is incomprehensible, just as striking as the total absence of immigrants from his work. The magazine is a global phenomenon. Since its foundation in 1944, it has spun several versions, but the original can be found everywhere from 5th Avenue to St. Germain. Somehow it retained the flavor of that time. Hola’s glossy pages do have prefab celebrities, but mostly they are populated by Goyesque royalty and bullfighting personalities. Characters that share with Almodóvar’s drag queens a desperate beauty, gaudy life styles and doomed relationships. The monumental effort put into keeping face is endearing. It is a spectacle of tragicomic proportions, as retro as Ferrero Rocher and as glamorous as Joan Collins.

Hola is vintage Almodóvar and, unlike his latest films, very contemporary and real. But the best is happening behind the curtains, at Hola’s surreal Madrid offices, in an intrigue that mixes Eduardo Sanchéz, the heir of Hola, his nonagenarian hands-on mother, their dog, small time aristocrats and aggressive socialites. The director himself worked in an office for nearly 15 years. One can only imagine the plotting and courting that goes into every edition of the magazine. Think The Rogue September Issue. Tenía meses que no escribía algo por aquí.

Bienvenidos sean una vez más a éste su blog – casa Geek de confianza. Lamento que hayamos desaparecido así como lo hicimos, pero fué debido a cuestiones de prioridades de cada uno de los autores que solían escribir por aquí.

Gracias a Pustulio, tenemos un nuevo equipo de colaboradores a quienes seguramente ya conocen (o por lo menos dan follow en Twitter), o si no, irán conociendo conforme este blog va creciendo nuevamente. Como bien les dije a los nuevos colaboradores a través de un mail el viernes pasado: “Nuestro firme propósito es ser el homepage de muchos usuarios geek de internet para que puedan acceder a una gran variedad de contenido chingón (sorry, necesito usar esa palabra) y que a la vez nosotros podamos aprender un poco de ellos.”

Poco a poco iremos agarrando un nuevo ritmo de posteo y también irán conociendo un nuevo panorama que Bygeek tiene por ofrecer, como podcasts, entrevistas, concursos, regalos para nuestros lectores, reuniones (chelas included), tours, LAN parties… sé que les va a gustar lo que se viene encima.
