Today, I wanted to share some pictures that I took with my Toy Camera. I use an old school, Holga 120 N camera in addition to my iPhone (with multiple Apps for different stylized shots), Nikon, and Canon.

There are a few pics of Victoria House. There’s one of my favorite breakfast: Huevos Rancheros and Lobster and Eggs Benedict with Hollandaise Sauce. Some pics are of Lamanai and the San Pedro airport, too.

The Holga is available at Urban Outfitters or online. I bought mine through Amazon for $30 with free Prime shipping. I know that sounds pretty cheap for a camera, but there are lots of other costs that come along with this type of photography.

Lomo photography, or Lomography, is a type of photography where color is emphasized and the picture looks vintage and more stylized. Cameras today produce high-resolution, stunning pictures that are taken with automatic settings. Original Lomography cameras are the Holga, Fisheye, ColorSplash and the Supersampler. I’m sure you’ve seen or heard of some of these (Fisheye?) through Photobooth or iPhone apps.

With my lightweight, Holga, plastic camera, I can mess with the color, the light, and the lenses to create cool effects. Sometimes, two photos are taken over each other and you can see both images at once (called double exposure). It’s pretty cool. I also have an extra lens that makes pictures taken in the direct sunlight look better. Some people even mess with their cameras and create light leaks to produce a rainbow of color in their photos.

Now let’s get to the pricey part. Film (120 film not 35 mm) is between $6 and $25 dollars (24 exposures per roll). You can get black/white or color (I think color comes out better) and don’t forget to store it in your freezer to make it last longer. The even more expensive part is the film development. You have to go all the way to the photography store, drop it off, wait for it, and then come back to get it. Oh, and development costs around $25 dollars.

Photography like this is one of those passions/hobbies for like skiing and SCUBA diving: it’s expensive but it’s really, really fun! We’re all caught up with instant gratification nowadays….taking a picture, winding the wheel, and waiting a few days to see how it came out brings a little bit of the challenge back!

Everyone brings a compact digital camera on vacation. Why not be different and make memories with an old school film camera. If you like photography and have some cash to burn, I suggest you try going Lomo. Enjoy the photos.

Getting your bags and going through customs is pretty quick. Go and check in for your Tropic Air flight to San Pedro and have a beer at the world famous Jett’s Bar (voted one of the best airport bars by AOL) in the airport.

Tropic will give you a colored boarding pass. Get ready for your 10-15 person flight to San Pedro that will only take around 10 minutes!
