Of all the factors on the table in the current Afghan strategic review, the War on Drugs and its unintended consequences should be front and center. Our 95-year effort to create a Drug Free America by enforcing world-wide prohibition has twisted our foreign policy out of shape all over the globe and the nightmare in Afghanistan is just the latest manifestation.

It seems to be an open secret that President Hamid Karzai’s brother is a player in the heroin trade, and the whole administration in Kabul is said to be riddled with corruption. Unfortunately, the replacement of Karzai, even if that proved possible, would not change the fundamental dynamic. Nearly a tenth of the population relies on the illegal opium industry for their daily bread. Corruption will be the norm as long as the American people are willing to invest limitless resources manning an arbitrary barricade between the sellers and buyers.

Unfortunately narco-corruption, like narcotics themselves, can penetrate any border and there is growing evidence that this cancer has metastasized into every nook and cranny of the known world. Consider, for example, this headline from London: “Corrupt officers exist throughout the UK police service.”

This jarring assessment of the once-pristine Royal Constabulary comes from Britain’s National Criminal Intelligence Service. According to a document leaked to the Daily Telegraph, the head of the agency warns that “corruption may have reached ‘Level 2′, the situation which occurs in some third world countries.”

The “situation” in the colonies, current and former, is undoubtedly worse. Here’s a two-week random pick from recent U.S. headlines: August 14, a Baton Rouge deputy sheriff is sentenced to 10 years for cocaine distribution. Six days later a Georgia cop goes down on the same charges. The following week a Memphis officer is busted for distributing crack and the next day a U.S. Customs agent in Newark is cuffed for running off with a hundred pounds of cocaine. The day after that a prison guard in Arkansas is nailed for delivering meth to the Pine Bluff maximum security wing, and the head of a Michigan narcotics unit pleads guilty to diverting drugs and cash.

This is a tiny sample of lawmen who were sloppy enough to get caught. But according to Law Enforcement Against Prohibition [LEAP], the virus is everywhere. LEAP co-founder Peter Christ, a retired Police Captain from suburban Buffalo, puts it this way: “You’ve been a police officer four or five years, you’ve seen the wasted energy spent on this drug war, and now you’re standing in a motel room and lying on the bed is a hundred thousand in cash that hasn’t been counted yet. And in your back pocket is a bill from the plumber you can’t pay. And it doesn’t make any difference anyway. So you take your first taste. And then you’re gone.”

In this war as in all wars it’s the foot soldiers who bite the dust. But focus for a second on the staggering amount of cash in play — more than $300 billion a year according to the United Nations — and we would have to be brain dead not to suspect that this corrosion reaches the upper echelons of all governments including our own. As presidents Hamid Karzai, Felipe Calderón, Álvaro Uribe, Michelle Bachelet, Rafael Correa, and others have discovered, with that kind of loot lying around you can’t trust anyone. What’s worse, the exposure to people who are getting fabulously wealthy by ignoring the law inspires a corrosive tolerance for criminality. In Ohio we just uncovered two juvenile court judges who were raking in thousands of dollars a head for every kid they sent to a private for-profit prison. This is a fire alarm sounding for the court system itself.

Even more ominous, the illegal drug trade turns out to be the ultimate crime university and a godsend for terrorists. It provides weapons, training and untraceable cash for operations, and essential technologies like border penetration and money laundering have become an art form in the hands of the drug lords. We have, in effect, created a global mechanism that is in the process of eating our civilization alive.

The drug warriors tell us we have to stay the course or drugs will destroy us but they don’t like to talk about the incalculable damage being done by blind adherence to a failed policy. While abuse of narcotics can be devastating, the tragedy of addiction actually affects only about one person in a hundred. There are humane answers to this problem that don’t require putting the future of the nation at stake. We cut tobacco addiction in half through education and never fired a shot.

International drug prohibition was begun by the United States and we can end it with a simple majority vote in Congress. As for the rest of the world, several of our allies are already ahead of us. Portugal, Holland and Switzerland are successfully experimenting with legalization and three former Latin American presidents are calling for an end to the drug war because the corruption and violence in their countries is spinning out of control.

The prohibitionists insist that legalization would only increase lawlessness, but all the evidence is on the other side of the scale. When we ended alcohol prohibition the U.S. murder rate was cut in half. Then we regulated booze, taxed it heavily, and the state got the money instead of the mob. The prison population shrank and the criminal justice system was freed from the daily grind of processing drunks and their enablers and the huge burden of enforcement was lifted from the taxpayers.

We could repeat that success with the stroke of a pen. And we could cut the funding for terrorists and simultaneously pull the rug out from under the drug lords. And in Afghanistan we would no longer have to explain to the family of the poppy farmer whose livelihood we just torched that we really meant well.

Move over big brother, here we come. That is what a tiny nation of a little over 5 million people will be saying to the Czechs. In the summer of 2010, Slovakia’s footballers will be in South Africa playing in the World Cup for the first time as an independent nation. Qualifying top of Group 3 in the European zone, ahead of traditional powerhouses like Czech Republic, Poland and Northern Ireland, Vladimir Weiss’s men have done themselves and their nation proud.
There is an immense need in Bratislava to stop being the little brother to the big shot Czech Republic, especially in sport. The two countries used to be one and after their split in 1993, the Czechs have been a powerful force in European soccer. The very fact that the neighboring countries had been drawn together in a qualifying group was an exciting chance for the improving Slovaks. It had happened in qualifying for World Cup 1998 and Euro 2008, but Slovakia was always an also-ran. This time they made sure that things were different. With seven wins out of 10 and the most goals scored (22) in the qualifying journey, the Slovaks proved all their doubters wrong. Not to mention beating the Czechs in their own den, 2-1. A corner had been turned in Slovak football.

They earned their place in football’s grandest stage by beating Poland 1-0, fighting blizzard conditions and fevered expectations of a nation. “I love these players,” said Slovakia’s Coach Vladimír Weiss after the victory, earned after a third minute own-goal by the Poland defender Seweryn Gancarczyk. He said, “In these qualifiers we have played well and had a little bit of luck. Everybody made a contribution and we made the whole of Slovakia happy. This is a fantastic feeling. He added, “Several people maybe didn’t believe in us. But we succeeded. I am proud of these guys and this triumph.” The team’s achievement can best be quantified by looking at the opposition they will now face in South Africa lining up against the likes of Germany, Italy, Spain, England, Holland, Brazil, Argentina, Portugal, France and United States. With not many marquee players in the squad, this team has been a revelation throughout the qualifying campaign. The likes of Marek Hamsik, Martin Skrtel, Stanislav Sestak, Marek Cech and Vladimir Weiss Jr. will rub shoulders with the very best of the world in South Africa.

It has been a qualifying campaign full of surprises and magic. With as many as five debutants in 2010 – Slovakia, Slovenia, Serbia, Honduras and North Korea and countries like Algeria and New Zealand qualifying after long gap -, it will be a tournament to watch. The countdown to an exciting summer in South Africa has just begun.

Dutch online poker does not share the same fame as table poker because it is very difficult to find a legal online poker games in the Netherlands. Online gambling is legal at Dutch internet sites, but the government has yet to give out any licenses. Last year Holland Casino, which controls all casinos in the country, applied for a license to operate online, but the Dutch senate shut them down.

The only other option players have is to play online poker at foreign sites. There are many internet poker rooms that accept players from the Netherlands, but the Dutch government tries very actively to prevent people from using foreign online poker sites. They have even given Dutch banks a blacklist of online gambling companies that they cannot deal with. The EU is pressuring the Dutch government to change their policy, but in the meantime, Dutch online poker is not so easy to come by. Read more…

1. Name/Alias: Ouxu Cheng

2.Where are you from/ Where do you currently live?: I am from Holland and I currently live in Den Haag.

3. Where did/do you go to school and your major?: I finished high school. After that I tried several studies; European Business Studies, Fashion school and a Cultural Social Education. The subject matter was interesting to me, but studying itself was hard. Mostly because it was difficult for me to concentrate. I get distracted quickly.
During one of my studies I finished a make-up course. That was fun, cause it was like a painting class.

4. What is your Grind? My grind is currently freelance make-up and photography. I am also working on a concert photography book which consists of photos of some of my favorite musicians I’ve shot in the past few years. As long as I can create I am happy.

5. How did you get into what your doing now?: I rolled into it. It wasn’t my intention to become a make-up artist. It just seemed fun. After the course I kept assisting other make-up artists and eventually got my own gigs. Six months later I got a chance to work for a national tv production company. I got the job and stayed there for 2,5 years. I learned a lot during that period. Right now I am freelancing. Photography I started doing for fun as well. The more I did it, the more I loved it.

6. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?: When I was a kid I saw myself walking around as a successful business woman in a suit with an attaché suitcase. I dreamed of having chains of restaurants as big as McDonalds. Maybe one day..

7. What are some contributing factors that shaped the life you live now?: My upbringing. My family came to Holland to make money and survive. To create a better life for themselves and for their children. They had no choice but to work hard without the freedom to do what they would’ve liked to do. My generation is freeing itself from that. I am very happy that I have the choice to do what I like. It’s still hard work, but on a different level.

8. Any specific people that mentored or helped guide you to your current path?: My aunt is a key factor in my life. She is an inspiration to me. Aside from what she’s accomplished (after raising 5 children she became a certified doctor specialized in natural medicine) she has always supported the family. My sister has always been there for me.

9. What motivates you?: The challenge to achieve motivates me. Lots of talented people around me motivate me. In daily life it’s ‘progress in whatever i do’ that keeps me going when I feel less motivated.

10. Your favorite author and why?: I have two favorite books. One is The Prophet by Khalil Gibran and the other is Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. Meditations is my bible.

11. What are 3 goals you want to achieve within the next year?:

- Become healthier. It’s the base for everything else.
- Become an expert in photo editing and video editing!
- Decluttering my house till all I’ve left is my computer, my hard drives, my camera and my phone.

12. One person that continuously inspires you and why?: There are so many people I meet who inspire me. It’s hard to name one. I like passionate people and people who show their strength during tough times. And Rev Run.

13. 3 Indie brands you LOVE to rock?: There is no special indie brand that I like.I wear whatever I like and what feels comfortable on me. I like sneakers and dresses. If there’s a brand that combines those two, that will be my fav brand.

14. What annoys you the most?: People who complain.

15. Your best quality?: Loyalty.

Boring day Today in Amsterdam the weather is horrible. Lots of rain and wind. Yesterday we’ve got the same weather in the morning. But later on the sun was shining and it became a nice afternoon. I had to do some shopping in the city center. After that is took some shots.

The fist one is a tourist taking a picture of her family. I was impressed by her boots. They are great don’t you think.

The second one I took at one of the canals. I saw some colourful tourist on orange bikes. But when I wanted to take the picture this couple passed them. Well I was happy with it.

The last one is typical Amsterdam I think. All tourists come to Holland for the Red light district, drugs and the canals.

Infos Lady Lakritz
This is Lady Lakritz: Kassandra Papak will sound broken, she’ll whisper, she’ll yell or in the end just sing songs written by violinist Eva Cottin. Melodic lines on the violin contrast distorted parts with heavy beats created by Raphael Armin. He also plays a broken choretta (an electric accordion) that makes it sound fragile and warm at the same time. All this is built on melodic, but clearly defined bass lines played by Milan Kappe. And then there are all these small sounds you wouldn’t expect…

This last week was very special for me (Robert). After a long period without any contact of any kind

This last week was very special for me (Robert). After a long period without any contact of any kind two special people visited us here in El Gouna. We somehow lost contact with each other around 12 years ago so I was very surprised to get a friend request on Facebook from my old colleague from Holland. It was as if these 12 years without seeing or hearing each other did not exist and we saw each other just a few days ago. They immediately decided they wanted to visit us and that’s what they did this last week.

Of course we had a lot of fun digging up all the old stories and remembering all the crazy stuff we did during the years we worked together. We did some nice diving and I was very happy to be able to show them a few dolphins under water. I really hope they will visit us again next year because obviously I will not go to Holland (bbrrrrr much too cold!!).

Louk… I will keep teaching Sandy to say “zeehonden snuitje”!!

Smædekampagnerne i gammelmarxistisk stil kørte for fuld gas.

Scientology volunteers in Amsterdam demand full implementation of the United Nations Universal Decla

Scientology volunteers in Amsterdam demand full implementation of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Netherlands must live up to its reputation as human rights champion.

Members of the Church of Scientology of Amsterdam participate in petition-signing events throughout the year to educate the community on the importance of full understanding and implementation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Amsterdam—Scientology volunteers, determined to end blatant disregard for human rights, circulated a petition on the International Day for Tolerance November 16 to demand education on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in all Netherlands schools. In fact, Scientologists from Australia to Zimbabwe and Canada to Taiwan work in their communities to educate people on human rights and their responsibility for implementing them, not only for themselves, but for others as well.

“Despite The Universal Declaration of Human Rights having been adopted by the U.N. General Assembly more than 60 years ago, human rights are still infringed upon daily in nations the world over,” said Merel Remmerswaal, Public Affairs Officer for the Church of Scientology of Amsterdam, who helped organize the petition-signing event.

Last week, 20 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Nicola Duckworth, Europe and Central Asia Program Director at Amnesty International, expressed her concern that human rights are once again under attack. “Rights fall victim to the views of states with even the most basic human rights, such as protection from torture, are sacrificed to fight terrorism.”

Ms. Remmerswall, whose Church holds educational programs and human rights petition-signing events throughout the year, deplores human rights violations extant in the world today. “Young women are trafficked from Russia for sexual exploitation, African parents look on as their children die a slow death from starvation, people are tortured for their political beliefs,” she said. “These and so many other human rights abuses run completely counter to the values enshrined in the 30 articles of the UDHR.”

The petition, circulated by Scientology volunteers in partnership with the Amsterdam chapter of Youth for Human Rights International, calls upon the Dutch government to “make human rights education mandatory in schools and to conduct human rights education campaigns for all.”

The Church of Scientology of Amsterdam volunteers partner with a chapter of Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI), which provides booklets, audio-visual materials and other educational materials that broadly raise awareness about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The booklets and series of 30 short films, one for each article of the UDHR, bring this otherwise formidable document into the grasp of young people.

The preamble of the UDHR calls for “education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms.” It also states, “…it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law.”

These values are held in common by the Church of Scientology whose founder, L. Ron Hubbard, wrote, “Human Rights must be made a fact, not an idealistic dream.”

Scientologists from Australia to Zimbabwe and Canada to Taiwan work in their communities to educate people on human rights and their responsibility for implementing them, not only for themselves, but for others as well. For more information on the human rights education initiative of the Church of Scientology visit the Scientology web site.

September 18, 2003 Amsterdam, Netherlands There really is something about that “Y” chromosome

September 18, 2003

Amsterdam, Netherlands

There really is something about that “Y” chromosome. Mom and I spent the last few days packing furiously while Dad had XM satellite radio installed in his car.

For more than a week, my life has been a non-stop-flurry of erranding. With only one hour to spend at work, I misjudged the turning radius of Marty’s ubertruck and scraped the parked car next to me, instantly unpriming Marty’s primed bumper.

The background on Marty’s car is as follows: he’s a BAD driver. He runs into all kinds of stationary objects. Marty called us up one day just after Alex was born to “happily” report that he had randomly met some strangers in the parking lot of Circuit City who were now at the house banging out dents and repainting his Lexus. Needless-to-say, only one member of the family thought this was a good idea – and that member was, of course, Marty. The guys primed the car, took half their pay, and never returned.

My sister-in-law, Ali and her children, Alex, Lily and Peter, came over to help pack. Lily and Mom became fast friends and soon we heard 2 year old Lily yell from the basement, “Hey! Come on down here!” When her mother, Ali, responded, Lily yelled back, “No. The other!” She also followed Mom around the house going, “Lynne….” “Lyyyynnnne….” “Excuse me, Lynne?” and my personal favorite, “Lynne….where’s your daddy?” – meaning poor ol’ Keifer! As we hugged goodbye, Lily gave me a little extra “romp-bomp-a-chomp” and I still have the teeth marks to prove it!

So, here I am in Amsterdam, conjuring up ways to inset as much sin as possible into my lay-over before it all becomes illegal. Who needs Amsterdam when you’ve got Schipol airport filled with casinos, bars, shops, massage parlors, and a museum. And, you just know a hash house and a brood of hookers isn’t too far away!

In the meantime, I’m enjoying listening to Dutch. It’s almost English, but not quite. I feel like I’m constantly misunderstanding what everyone’s saying. For lunch: Chicken McNuggen!

Inhale the air mixed up with the smell of weed while walking down the street and round the corner to the red ligth district. The sky appears like a moldy peice of meat, grey and thick of gases. Now I’m here, in Amsterdam. Been here for 3 days now and nothing have happend really. Some walls are covered with beautiful graffiti and it makes me smile, wondering how the heck they managed to paint the whole 12 meters tall wall.

The pigeons are everywhere and are very alike the beggars in Berlin, Greedy and with big staring eyes. In this very moment I am sitting in a big library, the biggest I´ve ever seen with it´s four floors and big amounth of not just books but also people and computers. Writing in english is easyer than in Swedish on these keyboards.

Budjav lebac, a song I recently fell in love with, cheers me up a bit. But not enught to smile. I´m getting tired of traveling to places where I don´t feel wanted. I want to find people doing music, fireart, philisophy, spiritualism… or just being. All I want right now is to get my flute in London, then go to Spain and see what I can find there, peace or love at least, I hope.. I wanna find myself, not just sitting in a warm forest playing flute, but find myself within. I´m so tired of walking without knowing who this strange personne is, whom cries loundly about the past, sitting on rooftops at nighttime.

Well, I think I just have to struggle on, soon I will be there, and hopefully, be friend with the little clown inside.

Dear bewoners,

There is much I havent told you about this pretty place, Here people are letting go of themselves and putting up the sails. They goes on journeys they couldnt even imagine and ends up at a coffeeshop full of men. Others travels to other planets no one else ever been they turn insideout and make a map out of their skin so they can find their way back and again, find their way in. Dont think you enden up at the wrong place Now it´s your turn to find your inner space.

Wow. Just, well, amazing. So amazing I momentarily left my Weetabix unguarded and the milk got a hea

Wow. Just, well, amazing. So amazing I momentarily left my Weetabix unguarded and the milk got a head of itself. Soggy Weetabix. On top of everything. What a morning.

Bill, well he usually doesn’t get flustered, but, my God, he was nearly shouting. He was possessed by shouty shouty Vanessa Feltz (you’ve seen her on the London local news, well those of you in London have, shouting, great entertainment is shouty shouty Feltz – IS FAT REALLY FAT OR IS IT PEOPLE’S IMAGINATION – TUNE IN FROM NIIIIIIINE!!!!!).

Poor Sian just looked flustered. She’d never seen 12 inches. She didn’t think it was possible. The largest ever recorded and here she was, looking at it’s after affects. She closes her eyes and wonders what it would have felt like to have been there when those 12 inches came.

They go live to the Cumbria correspondent who is stood in the dark talking over dark pictures and getting vaguely hysterical, in the dark.“You can see the damage,” she witters.

I think you’ll find we can’t. It’s dark. We can’t see anything. Except your eager hopeful face that just screams “Prime time baby. This is my ticket back to big time. Thankyou rain God.”

I doubt it darling. You haven’t even found us a weeping person. Or there must be some bastard in a blow up boat rowing around smugly following the TV cameras so he gets on telly. Or even I could find a woman standing in some water saying it’s Gordon Brown’s fault and that she can’t wait for the postman to get on his jet ski to deliver the mail because then she can ring The Sun up and say he got her son’s name wrong. She hasn’t got a son. But, you know, that’s not the point is it. Brown you bastard.

We’re back in the studio and Bill just looks tired. Sian’s still dreaming of those twelve inches.

“Twelve inches!” says Bill. Sian smiles. Catches herself.

“It’s horrific,” she says. Nice save. She congratulates herself.

And, well, what more can you say, really. Twelve inches of rain, it’s quite a lot of rain. It’s wet, isn’t it? And the rivers, they don’t like it too wet. So pernickety. And 200 people got a ride in a helicopter.

You could say it was a tad ridiculous in a country where it pretty much rains every year at around the same time, where it pretty much always causes flooding, and where it pretty much always results in people saying it will never happen again, and where it then pretty much always does happen again, that we can’t cope with a downpour, even now.

Other countries must be puzzled. Poor Holland, it thought it had a monopoly on water-based danger, what with it being flat. But us Brits, we’re plucky. Given the chance, we can fuck pretty much anything up.

*Written before the death of PC Bill Barker was confirmed. Condolences go out to his family.

Source: U.S Department of State

Parental child abduction is a federal crime. It is also a tragedy that jeopardizes children and has substantial long-term consequences for the “left-behind” parent, the child, the family, and society. Children who are abducted by their parents are often suddenly isolated from their extended families, friends, and classmates. They are at risk of serious emotional and psychological problems. Similarly, left-behind parents experience a wide range of emotions including betrayal, loss, anger, and depression. In international cases, they often face unfamiliar legal, cultural, and linguistic barriers that compound these emotions.

Under the laws of the United States and many foreign countries, international parental child abduction is crime. Removing a child from the United States against another parent’s wishes can be considered a crime in every U.S. state. In some cases an abducting parent may be charged with a Federal crime under the International Parental Kidnapping Crime Act (IPKCA). This can be the case even when neither parent holds a custody decree prior to the abduction. Nevertheless, a custody decree can be helpful to prevent an international parental child abduction, or to recover your child if he/she is abducted.

The Importance of a Custody Decree

A well-written custody decree is an important line of defense against international parental child abduction. In your custody decree, it may be advisable to include a statement that prohibits your child from traveling abroad without your permission or that of the court. Ask your attorney if you should obtain a decree of sole custody or a decree that prohibits the travel of your child without your permission or that of the court. If you have or would prefer to have a joint custody decree, you may want to make certain that it prohibits your child from traveling abroad without your permission or that of the court.

If your child is at risk of being taken to a country that partners with the United States under the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction (Hague Abduction Convention), your custody decree should include the terms of the Hague Abduction Convention that apply if there is an abduction or wrongful retention (see country list).

The American Bar Association also suggests requesting the court, if the other parent is not a U.S. citizen or has significant ties to a foreign country, to require that parent to post a bond. This may be useful both as a deterrent to abduction and, if forfeited because of an abduction, as a source of revenue for you in your efforts to locate and recover your child.

REMINDER: Obtain several certified copies of your custody decree from the court that issued it. Give a copy to your child’s school and advise school personnel to whom your child may be released.

Two Parent Signature Law for a Passport

The United States does not have exit controls on its borders for holders of a valid passport. This makes preventing a passport from being issued to your child without your consent very important. Generally, if your child has a passport, it can be difficult to prevent the other parent from removing the child to another country without your permission.

U.S. law requires the signature of both parents, or the child’s legal guardians, prior to issuance of a U.S. passport to children under the age of 16. To obtain a U.S. passport for a child under the age of 16, both parents (or the child’s legal guardians) must execute the child’s passport application and provide documentary evidence demonstrating that they are the parents or guardians. If this cannot be done, the person executing the passport application must provide documentary evidence that he or she has sole custody of the child, has the consent of the other parent to the issuance of the passport, or is acting in place of the parents and has the consent of both parents (or of a parent/legal guardian with sole custody over the child to the issuance of the passport).

EXCEPTIONS: The law does provide two exceptions to this requirement: (1) for exigent circumstances, such as those involving the health or welfare of he child, or (2) when the Secretary of State determines that issuance of a passport is warranted by special family circumstances.

Read more: Passport Requirements for Minors

Children’s Passport Issuance Alert Program

You may also ask that your child’s name be entered into the State Department’s Children’s Passport Issuance Alert Program (CPIAP). Entering your child into the Children’s Passport Issuance Alert Program will enable the Department to notify you or your attorney if an application for a U.S. passport for the child is received anywhere in the United States or at any U.S. embassy or consulate abroad. If you have a court order that either grants you sole custody, joint legal custody, or prohibits your child from traveling without your permission or the permission of the court, the Department may refuse to issue a new or renewal U.S. passport for your child. The Department may not, however, revoke a passport that has already been issued to the child. There is also no way to track the use of a passport once it has been issued, since there are no exit controls for people leaving the U.S. If your child already has a passport, you should take steps to ensure that it is kept from a potential abductor by asking the court or attorneys to hold it.

IMPORTANT TO KEEP IN MIND:

The United States does not have exit controls.

The Department of State may not revoke a passport that has been issued to a child, but you can ask a court to hold onto it.

There is no way to track the use of a passport once it has been issued.

Your child might also be a citizen of another country (dual nationality). Even if he/she does not have a U.S. passport, your child may be able to travel on the other country’s passport.

The Privacy Act and Passports

Passport information is protected by the provisions of the Privacy Act (PL 93-579) passed by Congress in 1974. Information regarding a minor’s passport is available to either parent. Information regarding adults may be available to law enforcement officials or pursuant to a court order issued by the court of competent jurisdiction in accordance with (22 CFR 51.27).

Everyone rides a bike in Amsterdam, but that’s just the problem. If you avoid getting sideswiped by a bus, you may tangle with another bike, probably pedalled by a tourist just as bewildered as you are.

So try cycling into the countryside, the healthy green alternative. You’ll survive. You’ll enjoy it. I always do.

Rent a bike at any of the hire places close to Amsterdam Centraal Station and ask for a map of ‘Waterland’, north-east of the city. You can join an organised cycle tour to take you there, which is fine if you want to meet Knut from Norway or swap travellers’ tales with Betsy and Brad from Ohio. But if you’d rather save a few euros and ride at your own pace, you can easily go off on your own.

Check your tyres and saddle height, trying to look competent. Note that there’s no need to actually ride yet. The front of Centraal Station is a confusing nightmare of roads going in all directions, with trams, taxis and buses raising the degree of difficulty, so it’s not the ideal place to start your Dutch cycling career.

Instead, wheel your bike through to the back of Centraal. Behind the station people wait for little blue ferries, which putter across the North Sea Canal to “Buiksloterweg”. Fear not – you won’t have to pronounce the word, just hop aboard. Don’t fumble in your pocket for euros; the ferries are free. They’re for bikes and pedestrians only, and take just two minutes to reach the other side.

Once there, pretend to check your tyres again and wait while the cool racing riders in their revealing shorts speed into the distance. There’s a wide, flat cycle path in front of you. I repeat – wide, flat, cycle path. No cars, no-one watching, so wobble as much as you like. Turn off at a friendly sign, “Schellingwoude” – (don’t even think of saying this out loud). Then it‘s a doddle to roll along the bike path through shady parks beside the North Holland Canal. Even without gear changes or special cycling legs you’ll get out under the Amsterdam Ring Road in about twenty minutes.

Welcome to Waterland. There are cows grazing in green fields, ducks on canals, little white bridges, church towers poking up out of distant villages and flat bike paths everywhere. There are signposts at every intersection, and even if you get lost it won’t matter because it’s all so stunningly pretty.

Where you go now is up to you. A quiet 20-25km loop through old villages Zunderdorp and Ransdorp, out to Durgerdam, and back to Amsterdam will take about two hours, including a coffee break. If you’re up to riding all day and doing 75km, you can eat cheese in Edam, ride the dyke to historic Marken, zip down to Nieuwendam and still be back in town for a pre-dinner beer. There are lots of middle roads between these gentle and masochistic alternatives.

So, first through the polders, those fields rescued from total sogginess by the little canals cut through them. The villages of Zunderdorp, Zuiderwoude and Broek in Waterland are notable for their old houses and churches. It’s apparently compulsory here to have geranium pots by your windows and massed pink and purple hydrangeas in a lush garden. The farms look so prosperous they couldn’t possibly be real farms. Surely they’re country retreats owned by merchant bankers. Or are subsidies so generous in this area that a farmer with ten cows can also afford six horses?

The wetlands between the fields are protected nature reserves. There are oyster-catchers, lapwings, redshanks, a kestrel (okay, I’ve got a bird book) and thousands of geese. Every canal has its ducks, coots and resident white swans.

It’s quiet, but you won’t have the road all to yourself. You’ll meet sporty types on matching his and hers touring bikes. A mother rides with a toddler mounted on her handlebars and older children on their own bikes proudly weaving alongside. From time to time peletons of wannabe Rabobank riders whip by in tight formation. Then there’s that older couple riding at a snail’s pace, but always turning up in front of you, no matter how often you overtake them.

Sorry if you were hoping to see old windmills. Out here they’re modern ones, converting that wind you’re cycling against into clean green electricity. The power lines in the background sometimes spoil a good photo, but this is right outside a major capital city, so what did you expect?

If your legs are still functioning, follow the signs to Monnickendam, Volendam and Edam. According to my dictionary, ‘dam’ is Dutch for dam, and there are lots of them in Waterland. What used to be the Zuiderzee (South Sea) is now cut off from the North Sea by a massive dyke and has become a lake, the IJsselmeer.

Many bus tours stop in Volendam, so it’s the perfect place to shop for “I love Holland” baseball caps, but Edam and Monnickendam are my favourites. During the summer, Edam puts on a popular cheese market show on Wednesday mornings, with men in silly costumes running round carrying huge trays of the stuff and tossing it on to horse-drawn carts. It’s very crowded but fun, in a cheesy sort of way. Monnickendam is quieter, quirkier and still a working shipyard. It’s a fine place to stop at a café for “koffie and appeltaart”, neither of which are prohibited substances under amateur cycling rules.

Head east along the dyke to the island of Marken. Yes, you can ride a bike to this island, because since 1952 it’s been connected to the mainland by a causeway. In the old days, Marken fisherfolk wore colourful traditional dress. Now Marken’s main industry is selling postcards of colourful fisherfolk. However, the green wooden houses, perched on stilts or built on mounds to keep their feet dry, offer great photo opportunities, as does the lighthouse on the tip of the island.

Your backside is probably telling you it wouldn’t mind a hot bath some time soon. So turn for home past Durgerdam, with its row of fishermen’s cottages, and along Nieuwendammerdijk, recently voted ‘Amsterdam’s second most beautiful street’ in a newspaper poll. Winner was the Brouwersgracht in the centre of town, but the mere fact that Nieuwendam can claim to be part of Amsterdam suggests you’re nearly back in the big smoke.

See – you survived Waterland! As the ferry chugs over to Centraal you have two minutes to consider keeping that bike and riding it round town tomorrow. Good luck!

The past week and a half has been a blur.
Exploring the Netherlands, firguring out how to use public transport and trying everything to get a discount on the rediculously expensive trains here.

So get this, €89 to catch an hour and a half train to Amsterdam. That’s like $160AU!! Rip off! Haha. Also figured out that when you use the loo on the train that as soon as you flush, your business ends up on the tracks. Don’t worry, didn’t use the loo.

So this week I chilled out in Amsterdam, went on the cannal tours, visited a coffee shop and talked to the lovely ladies at the red light district. Although Amsterdam seems like a city of sin, with streets filled with prositutes, weed, gambling, magic mushrooms and live porn shows, there’s an atmosphere you can’t beat.

It’s actually really beautiful here, the old buildings, the people, THE FOOD, the water, the cold; i’m deffinately comming back here and bringing my friends.

I love it here, but I miss my Australia

The store is covered in Christmas trees and items like this one. She was over in a corner and when you turned around she would scare you if you were not paying attention. I should have looked at the tag to see the price. We have to visit the store at least once during the year. They had a giant comedy/tragedy masks like my small ones. I really wanted to know the price on them. I could not find the tag since the masks were tied to the tree.
