Remember the hit movie “Titanic” that came out in the 90’s? The director, James Cameron, has another movie coming out next month, titled “Avatar.” I would be hard pressed to describe the story, but it looks interesting. (And judging by the 3D trailer I saw in front of “A Christmas Carol” yesterday, it looks great.) Below is an interview with Cameron from 60 Minutes. (I think there is one mild curse word in the interview, just FYI.) The most interesting part of the interview to me was the discussion near the beginning about the story vs. special effects. “Avatar” looks like a feast for the eyes, but Cameron stresses that the story is really the key element.

The most memorable movies have stories that connect with people. They may feature great visual effects, but the movies that last and are universally loved and remembered are the ones with a great story. On the other hand, movies that are long on special effects and short on story and character may do well at the box office, but are quickly forgotten. (The “Transformers” movies immediately come to mind.) Any good director will tell you that visual effects must serve the greater purpose of telling a good story.

Special effects change over time. What was innovative a few years or decades ago seems hokey and out-of-date today because of the constant advance in technology and the tastes of audiences. So visual effects aren’t bad, and in fact can be quite helpful. But they shouldn’t exist for their own sake.

It’s much the same with worship. Every tradition of worship features some form of “special effects.” These can range from the evangelical emphasis on music and technology, to the liturgical and Catholic use of vestments and bells, and to the Orthodox use of icons and incense. Every Christian worship tradition has practices and elements that help people to worship. However, they don’t exist for themselves, but rather to help us remember and enter into God’s great Story: Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Re-Creation. They support, enhance, and focus worship, but they should never become the focus themselves.

This Christmas season, I encourage all of us to remember the heartbeat of Christmas: worshiping the God who gave himself unselfishly. The shopping, Christmas music, church programs, TV shows, Christmas traditions… all of those are great, but what really matters is the story of salvation embodied in a tiny child born in a manger.

E prima della cena ufficiale, ai Singh e alla loro delegazione gli Stati Uniti hanno offerto anche un pranzo ufficiale al Dipartimento di Stato, presenti il vicepresidente americano, Joe Biden, e il segretario di Stato, Hillary Clinton. Per nessuno dei presidenti finora ricevuti alla Casa Bianca Obama aveva riservato un’accoglienza tanto accurata, attenta e calorosa. ”E’ un onore per me accogliere a nome del popolo americano la prima visita ufficiale del premier Singh – ha detto Obama – Riflette il valore della nostra relazione, per una partnership che vuole definire il XXI secolo”. Singh dal canto suo lo ha ringraziato cosi’: ”India e Usa si fondano su valori comuni e hanno interesse a mettere a fuoco il loro immenso potenziale in una partnership strategica”. I due leader nella conferenza stampa congiunta hanno spiegato che dal nucleare alla lotta al terrorismo, dal clima all’energia, dalla ricerca alla lotta contro la poverta’, sono molteplici i settori in cui India e Stati Uniti intendono rafforzare la loro relazione. Per interessi interni, ma anche in funzione dei reciproci rapporti con la Cina. Alle ragioni di reciproco interesse tra i due Paesi si aggiungono poi quelle derivanti dalla mutua simpatia tra i due presidenti. Obama non ha mai fatto mistero di nutrire nei confronti di Singh una stima particolare. ”Ho avuto modo di intrattenermi con il premier Singh, e devo fare i complimenti ai cittadini indiani: hanno scelto come premier un uomo di grande valore e saggezza” disse Obama al termine di un G20 rispondendo alla domanda di una giornalista di New Dehli. Anche per questo Singh, 77 anni, e la moglie, 51 anni, hanno avuto il privilegio della prima cena di Stato ufficiciale. Per questo e’ stata in indiano la prima parola pronunciata da Obama nella conferenza stampa congiunta tenuta al termine del colloquio avuto con Singh: ”Namaste” (mi inchino a te). ”Il premier Singh – ha detto Obama – e’ un uomo di grande integrita’ che gode della mia stima e del mio rispetto”. ”Quanto Obama sta facendo e’ ammirevole – ha ribattuto Singh – Seppur separati da due oceani, i nostri Paesi sono vicinissimi nei valori su cui si fondano, e intendono adoperarsi insieme per farli crescere nel mondo”. E’ questa la partnership capace di ”definire il XXI secolo”. Dal clima al terrorismo, dall’energia al nucleare, India e Usa sono piu’ insieme che mai.

Grendel is an alias of several related characters in Comico and Dark Horse publications, the first of which being brilliant author and crimelord Hunter Rose.

Not much is known about the life of Hunter Rose before he returned to America. His name is not known, only that as a child he went by “Eddie”. Eddie was of exceptional brilliance, later to be discovered that the source may have been a rare genetic mutation allowing him to use virtually 100% of his brainpower. Eddie was bored and alone. School, sports, and most other endeavors did not provide adequate challenge. To say that Eddie excelled at everything he tried his hand at would be an understatement. Eddie found that he was quite fond of solo sports, particularly fencing. He went to the world fencing championship in England and easily won first place. It was there that he met Jocasta Rose, a trainer for the English team. The two quickly fell in love, and Jackie took on the role of a mentor as well as a lover to Eddie.

The profoundness of Jackie’s influence became even more evident after her death. Eddie returned to America, adopting the name and lifestyle of bestselling author Hunter Rose. He also listened closely and secretly to the inner workings of the city’s criminal underworld. Adopting the masked and identity of the assassin Grendel, Rose easily impressed mob bosses and was hired as a personal assassin. Armed with a staff with a forked blade, Grendel Rose to the top of his organization, becoming his former boss’s leader. Income soared under Rose’s leadership. Rose struck fear into the hearts of criminals in his and other organizations, still killing when it suited his purposes. His business continued to expand, and he caught the eye more and more of Argent the Wolf.

After the death of business associate Barry Palumbo, Rose adopted Palumbo’s adopted niece, Stacy Palumbo. Rose and Argent both adored young Stacy, and this allowed Rose to keep closer tabs on Argent (now Grendel’s arch-nemesis), leading to the carefully planned public humiliation of Argent in front of the affluent, the media, and particularly young Stacy. Stacy’s relationship with Argent wained, the young girl no longer looking at him as the same after Argent’s humiliation, until they no longer spoke. Despite Rose’s best efforts this had the unintended consequence of Stacy changing, becoming more sad. Argent became more ferocious than before, and continued to pit the wealth of his rage against his hated enemy Grendel.

Eventually during planning of an event which would allow Rose to take control of virtually all criminal activity on the entire seaboard, Stacy would discover that her “uncle” Hunter was really Grendel. It would take her longer to discover what this really meant, but Stacy put all of her effort into learning about Grendel. She did not like what she would discover. In her continued efforts to learn more about Hunter’s dark side, Stacy would eventually discover the secret location of the journals detailing his criminal activities and double life. She was able to break into his antiquated safe, and discovered that Hunter Rose had killed her uncle Barry. This discovery shattered her world, and she was determined to destroy him and use Argent as a means to her ends.

Stacy would act as an anonymous informant, using Rose’s own journals of his business dealings against him. She would make phone calls to Argent’s private line, giving him information about Grendel’s upcoming dealings and potential contacts. Hunter became increasingly angry and suspicious of his nemesis. Hunter Rose’s demise would come when Stacy had finally set up her plans to bring Argent and Rose into final conflict. Stacy called Argent claiming to have been kidnapped by Grendel. Argent tour through one of Grendel’s operations in order to get Grendel’s attention. Enraged at one another, Grendel and Argent decided to meet on the roof of the Masonic Temple. After the final battle, the police would discover Argent paralyzed on the roof, with the slain and unmasked body of Hunter Rose nearby. Stacy would be institutionalized for what could be determined of her role. Argent went into seclusion.

Hunter Rose’s legacy as Grendel was not over with his death. As Hunter had once seen in a demonic vision, the legacy and reign of Grendel would continue through the centuries, continually mutating through various forms.

The Times reports today about who did and didn’t make the cut for President Barack Obama’s first state dinner. Noticeably absent are top Republican lawmakers. Who did make the list? Well, Oprah Winfrey, for one.

Although many in mainstream media will attempt to discount the significance of the invite list – who made Obama’s A-List and who didn’t – the fact is this list is a solid representation of Obama’s vanity and skewed priorities in Washington.

So far, according to the Times, we know one Republican did get an invitation –

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell received an invitation but decided to skip the dinner.

“Sen. McConnell is with his constituents this week and will be at Kentucky events tomorrow and tomorrow night,” Don Stewart, the senator’s communications director, said Monday.

But the list of top congressional Republicans stiffed by the Administration is longer and says far more about Obama’s notion of bipartisan leadership in Washington.

House Minority Leader John A. Boehner won’t be there; he’s on Thanksgiving break and home in Ohio. His deputy, Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia, also didn’t get an invitation to the dinner.

The president didn’t invite his 2008 rival, Sen. John McCain of Arizona, even though Mr. Obama the candidate pledged a post-partisan presidency.

Hollywood, however – according to some reports and rumors – will be well represented.

According to rumors, talk show queen Oprah Winfrey, who endorsed Mr. Obama during the campaign, will be attending. Reports emerged Monday that Hollywood will be in the house: DreamWorks partners David Geffen, Steven Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg, along with Sony Pictures Entertainment Chairman Michael Lynton and WME Entertainment Agency co-CEO Ari Emanuel, will attend, according to deadline.com.

One of the most important abilities a singer needs in the studio is to be able to pick up a piece of music and perform it instantly. Some sessions may involve learning the music by ear, but the majority of the best paid union sessions require sightsinging.

It’s not hard to learn, but it takes lots of practice to get really, really fast at it. Not only do you need to read the notes and rhythms, but you must make it musical, with little or no rehearsal.

Singing in a church choir – or any type of choir – regularly is one of the best places to hone this part of the craft.

Now who lets a stranger into their house to stay the night over? Who? Sure as hell not me and certainly not if that stranger is 300 pound 6 feet 4inch tall and did I mention stranger! If you get past that and look at it like good things happen to good people kinda way then you’ll watch the rest of the movie. So I went into the theater expecting to love Sandra Bullock and I came out feeling just that. So how brilliant is the movie? Technically I wouldn’t give it a standing ovation yet as I watched Leigh Anne Tuohy revel in her state of happiness I couldn’t help but feel the same for an onscreen character. Perhaps it’s because it’s based on a real life story, that of Michael Oher.

It’s wonderfully crafted in terms of screenplay and S.J Tuohy just warmed up the screen with his cute smile plastered across his freckled face. I think as a moviegoer what I loved most was that the movie cut short most of the drama and just brought happiness in a quick short in an almost unbelievable way. Honestly I smiled in most of the scenes and Sandra Bullock was awesome.

She was a power house and it felt good to see someone be that way. She’s so strong willed and certain and confident that you might just walk out with a lil bit of her character. That’s a good thing right?

Coming to the man on whom this story is based on- Michael Oher. I must admit I didn’t know of him before the movie. I am sorry I’m just getting to learn football and I love the game now. My fav team- the colts but in this movie it just showed me even in the form of fiction, how are choices to lead to what we have at the end of a day. I do love the moral of the movie, gang wars and gang members are indeed robbing themselves and those around them a life that could be more than worthy than taking a life.

Quinton Aaron who plays Michael Oher in the film did a good job at least I felt so. Yes, the movie was a bit too feel good and see good which might not relate to an average guy’s life but hey there does exist a Michael Oher and he does very much seem to have Leigh Anne Tuohy and Sean Tuohy as his adopted parents. So obviously things worked out for them.

The movie works for me. But I wouldn’t add it to my ‘all time fav movie’ list or anywhere close. If you’re the kind who would like to read the brief of a novel then this movie will do just that. It’s cuts out all the bad hard times and gets to the happy stuff.

Alternando su reciente faceta de documentalista con la de productor de cine y realizador de TV, el maestro del costumbrismo contémporaneo, el futuro ganador del Cecil B. DeMille en los próximos Golden Globes, el gran Martin Scorsese, se prepara para una grata sorpresa. Y la sorpresa es su regreso al género del terror y el suspenso.

Para los que no recuerden Cape Fear y su magnífico DeNiro, Martin Scorsese en 1991 adaptó la novela de John D. MacDonald y junto a él, Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange y la jovencita Juliette Lewis armaron lo que para mi es un claro ejemplo de suspenso donde el cruento enfrentamiento entre DeNiro y su abogado defensor, Nolte, nos dejó petrificados en nuestras sillas. Para ese entonces Juliette Lewis caracterizaba a una jovencita casi de la misma edad mía; en ese entonces no concebía muy bien la diferencia de edades y pues me parecía un acto de seducción medianamente normal. Vista uno o dos veces después, el acto pedófilo se hizo más evidente y alimentó mi morbo en esta peli en particular. No hay cabida para ser tan macabro como lo fue DeNiro y tan genialmente malvado como Scorsese para lograr esta factura. La maldición de Scorsese, y de paso la de DeNiro, era la de arrasar en nominaciones y no ganar absolutamente nada (una gran injusticia con este par de monstruos), esta no fue la excepción. Qué buen guión, qué buena factura, qué actuaciones, etc… Y nada. Al final la revelación de Lewis y su virginal papel, le conllevaron dos premios y una nominación a nivel independiente.

Scorsese se prepara para un nuevo atardecer, de la mano de un reparto sencillamente impresionante, de Robert Richardson veterano de mil batallas en cinematografía al lado de Oliver Stone, el mismo Scorsese y recientemente visto en los basterdos de Tarantino, y de Thelma Shoonmaker editora que no sólo es una ganadora impresionante de óscares sino casi la mano derecha de Scorsese en todo su portafolio de largometrajes.

Apunta a ser escalofriante, impresionante, tenebrosa, ojalá muy gore y de una factura impecable. Que se lleve sus buenos premios y que Scorsese como es caballero repita Oscar como es debido.
