Save the date!
January 31, 2010 ONE GOOD WORLD ECOngress: Sourcing Legal Wood & Building Green Markets

The final phase of the Lacey Act amendments goes into effect in April 2010, reinforcing the grounds for legal prosecution of anyone found guilty of importing, transporting, selling or purchasing any furniture using illegally harvested wood from the U.S. or abroad. The Sustainable Furnishings Council is partnering with World Market Center and numerous governmental and non-governmental organizations to stage a conference better to understand the impact of this legislation on the home furnishings industry and how to build markets for legitimately sustainable products. The conference is structured as a series of short presentations followed by in-depth panel discussions open to questions from attendees. Two dozen speaker panelists will represent major organizations all points in the supply chain, including ranking staff from the U.S. government, academic institutions, forest landowners, Top 10 furniture manufacturers and retailers, interior design associations, and consumer media. The 1-day event will take the place on Sunday, January 31, the day before the opening of the Las Vegas Market. Register today by contacting susan@sustainablefurnishings.org.

Each Christmas, Christian pilgrims make their way to Bethlehem to visit the Church of the Nativity,

Each Christmas, Christian pilgrims make their way to Bethlehem to visit the Church of the Nativity, believed to mark the spot where Jesus Christ was born. Due to its location in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, travel has been rendered more difficult, especially since 2001, and souvenir shops in the Old City are hurting, according to recent news reports.

“Tourism has picked up lately,” Shibly Kando, owner of Kando Store in the West Bank, told the Detroit Free Press. “We can say that it’s a little better than before, but still if we compare with how it was before 2001, it’s still not 10 percent of that yet.”

Kando’s store feature antiques, jewelry and gifts made in the West Bank, such as nativity scenes carved out of olive wood — one of the most popular purchases.

Nearly 1.5 million people visited Bethlehem in 2008, and the number could reach two million this year, according to the Palestinian Tourism Ministry. However, the majority of visitors come on a half-day tour from Jerusalem, leaving little time for shopping in Bethlehem and leaving West Bank vendors out of the economic equation. As reported by Global Post, Palestinian Tourism Minister Khouloud Daibes says “seventy percent of all tourists to Bethlehem return to hotels in Israel, while Palestinians receive a mere five percent of total revenues from those visiting both Israel and the West Bank.”

In the village of Beit Sahour, near Bethlehem, Raja Bannoura and his family hand carve nativities from pruned olive tree branches. This fair-traded product retails for $24 at www.tenthousandvillages.com.

There are organizations trying to change things around. The Fair Trade Development Center at Bethlehem University has called for the establishment of “fair trade in tourism” movement to promote a different picture of Palestine and its people as an attractive and friendly tourism destination and to promote Palestinian goods produced under fair-trade principles. And Catholic Relief Services, the official humanitarian agency of the U.S. Catholic Community, has supported artisans and farmers in the Holy Land. Last year, it awarded $18,000 to the Holy Land Handicraft Cooperative Society for market development efforts.

The message is clear: Bethlehem is worth the effort to visit, but if you can’t there, then Bethlehem will come to you via fair-traded products.

According to the non-profit organization SERRV International, “fair trade is growing in Palestine, and farmers and carvers understand its benefits.”

“It’s very clear with fair trade that we get a fair wage,” wood carver Naji Abu Farha told SERRV. “We get work … and we always receive an advance and prompt payment…. We get the price we ask for. We get good orders.”

Until stability returns to the region, fair trade may be the best way for handicraft suppliers and vendors in the West Bank to survive.

So, after the holidays, when you’re stocking up on Christmas décor that’s 50 or 60 percent off at Walmart, consider making a special purchase that will have an impact in Bethlehem instead. It gets to the heart of the reason we celebrate Christmas in the first place.

Better yet, book your trip to the Holy Land and send us a souvenir (purchased in Bethlehem’s Old City) from your visit.

In the meantime, happy holidays from the Souvenir Museum.

Even on today’s top decorating shows you will find the stars heading off to thrift shops or antique malls to pick up “good stuff.” Today everyone is doing it, for the fun and the cost savings. Here are a few suggestions of where you will find these gems:

**Thrift shops: often the best places for decorative items and kids’ things (including all the baby equipment that is so expensive.

paint, and cleaning supplies. Great for purchasing an entire room of furniture, e.g. a kids’ room, or a dining room set. Major appliances, televisions, and even cars are common items. Be prepared to wait in line to get in, however, if you bought them at a furniture store. If you are almost guaranteed to find what you want. Beware of buying a piece here and there that will not work well together. Your items should still be cohesive, just as if you are looking for a red couch you are looking for a good, comfortable couch, in a color you can pick up a complete bedroom or living room set for reasonable (but not bargain-basement) prices.

Quality is usually very good. **Antique malls: You really have to be disappointed. However if you are buying. Prices can be new to very good. **Craig’s List: everything under the sun. Since these are businesses that rent furniture for temporary use, e.g. staging new homes, families who are renting a home for six months and don’t want to purchase what is available. If you are buying. Prices can be very inflated or very good. Shop around and educate yourself before you buy. **Be cautious of hidden problems, e.

g. odors in fabric items or children’ equipment that are not safe. ***And finally, if in doubt, don’t. There will always be another treasure hunt tomorrow…or, perhaps, next Saturday! Good Hunting! items, can as find an phenomenal item bargains, plugs but in watch line the to owner all does sorts!, not books, work decoratives, well bedding, as curtains, your clocks…just purchasing about guide. everything. *Tips: **Garage **Carry sales: the for fun electronics and jewelry they can also have unusual items e.

g. artwork. **Moving sales: frequently offering larger items that the owner does not want to move including exercise equipment, large bookshelves, older appliances, etc. With this type of treasure hunting you have to know what you are going with earth tones, with natural fibers and materials, then stick with this as your purchasing guide. *Tips: **Carry the card of a hauling company with you in case you find a great buy that is too big for your garden, food, computer parts and computers, to all kinds of electronics like big screen televisions, large furniture, and building materials.

**Habitat for Humanity stores: great resource for building materials that are left over from construction. **Charity sales: These are different from flea markets, they may be held as an auction or outright sale. People often donate entire rooms of furniture to these sales therefore you can live with, then you are looking for a red couch you are going with earth tones, with natural fibers and materials, then stick with this as your purchasing guide. *Tips: **Carry the card of a hauling company with you in case you find a great buy that is so expensive.

) They are also great for lamps, pictures/frames/art, kitchen gadgets, small appliances, tables, bookshelves, sewing machines, kitchen ware of all sorts!, books, decoratives, bedding, curtains, clocks…just about everything. **Garage sales: for many people garage sales are a little pricier but usually offer better quality furnishings of all types including tools, yard equipment, newer electronics, antiques, crystal, collectibles and even consumables like canned goods, paint, and cleaning supplies.

I came across this banner ad on a news website. It’s for DirectBuy, a company that sells home

I came across this banner ad on a news website. It’s for DirectBuy, a company that sells home remodeling products (flooring, appliances, counter top surfaces, cabinets, etc.).

The thing that struck me about this ad is that while it says “turn your house into a home”, the image doesn’t look like a home at all. At best it looks like a model home (you know, the kind of house nobody lives in but has all the latest shiny designer stuff and you can go walk through it and find out about the stuff?), at worst it looks like a room on a show floor – not part of a house at all (at least it has windows).

I guess that I just resent the idea that it takes shiny cupboards and new appliances and slick flooring to make a house a home. To me, those things make a house, a home is some place that people live and love. It’s the place where the couch looks like it gets used all the time, there might be places you suspect spaghetti sauce was once spilled, family photos or mementos are around and you find things like dilapidated teddy bears and books that have clearly been read a thousand times.

A “home” is more about the people and pets that live there than about the furnishings. A run down apartment with old appliances and cracks in the wall can as easily be a home as a shiny newly built house because it all depends on the people inside. Living room full of toys when guests arrive? No question – that’s a home, even if Mom is apologizing for the mess.

I guess what I’m saying is that a home has character. And while I agree that it’s important to love your house and make it your own, which can sometimes mean remodeling, that’s not what makes it a home. It can be a home before the remodeling happens as easily as after, even if everyone really wants the remodeling to happen. And model houses never look like homes to me. They have no books that look like anyone has ever read them, no toys that look like they were ever played with, no children’s drawings on the refrigerator, no half-finished projects tucked into a corner or in a side room (usually not even half-finished projects if there’s a sewing room), the pet food bowls don’t look like they’ve been eaten from or pushed around the floor, no half-squeezed toothpaste tubes in the bathrooms. These things don’t make a home, but they’re a good sign that you’re in one.

But I have even more obsessions… and these are the ones that actually semi rule my life (slash way of thinking): I am obsessed with art, architecture, & design.

The website I am going to introduce you to today has all three of the latter obsessions I mentioned.

It is called Design Milk.

Design Milk is arranged into seven different categories: Architecture, Art, Home Furnishings, Interior Design, News & Events, Style & Fashion, and Technology. Each category has people who simply blog about their finds within that specific topic. Their blogs will lead you on a journey to the COOLEST things you’ve ever seen. Believe me.

This website is a great way to find inspiration, Christmas gifts, decorating ideas, or simply kill time. I seriously could look at it for hours… HOURS. It’s easy to navigate and even EASIER to become an avid fan. Check it out. You won’t be disappointed.

Welcome back to the UK Homes weblog – your first port of call for the best home improvement tips and advice from the UK (or at least I would like to think so ). Well, its come to that time of year again and Christmas is nearly upon us (seriously, where do the years go?) As you can imagine – particularly if you read my blog regularly – as a young man looking to make the most of my humble lodgings I’ve been spending the last few weeks in the run up to the big day dropping my friends and relatives some very unsubtle hints for some furniture related presents that would make the perfect present for me and my house this Xmas. A couple of things I’ve been particularly considering is a decent quality oak square coffee table for the living room of my house. I’ve also been checking out some oak framed mirrors (just in case I’m not vain enough already) which I think will add a touch of class to my bedroom. The good thing about hardwood products such as oak is that they are extremely durable – and indeed a quality investment for the long-term. If you look after them and treat them regularly they can last a lifetime – as long as you don’t drop them of course (after all – who would want 7 years bad luck for smashing their oak mirror frame!)

Heath E. Combs — Furniture Today, December 14, 2009

LAS VEGAS — The Las Vegas Market will continue emphasizing sustainability with new green initiatives at the next show, which runs Feb. 1-5 at the World Market Center.

The market’s One Good World program will expand to include a supplier locator called One Good Guide, to help buyers find legitimate sustainable products at the event. These exhibitors will be listed in a special section of the market directory.

Companies interested in being listed will be vetted by the Sustainable Furnishings Council. Applications will require declarations about materials usage, transportation, wood sourcing, VOC emissions and foams used in upholstery cushioning. Exhibitors must also show and offer sustainable products at market and not merely have them as available options, the WMC said.

In addition to the listing, participants will receive window decals and showroom signage to call attention to their status, along with additional online marketing and public relations support.

WMC officials also said they plan to announce a “sustainability leadership congress” in early 2010 with representatives from government, environmental groups, manufacturers, retailers, interior designers and consumer media focused on wood sourcing.

“The green economy is not coming fast – it is already here,” said WMC President and CEO Bob Maricich. “Being ‘green’ is more than a principle and more than a trend; it is a sound business practice. Taking proactive actions to respect our environment is now a business reality and increasingly critical to our industry.”

At the February market, WMC also will offer seminars on eco-issues, including an interior design symposium with participants including HGTV’s Angelo Surmelis and brand icon Kathy Ireland.

The market also is hosting the SFC’s GREENleaders Certified Sustainability Training, a six-hour exam course for accreditation. The WMC also offered the course in February 2009.

For more information about participating in One Good Guide, exhibitors should contact the Sustainable Furnishings Council at (919) 967-1137 or e-mail susan@sustainablefurnishings.org.

A good night’s sleep is the healthiest kind of sleep. So why not get an even better night’s sleep on a healthier mattress? EcoSleep™ mattresses focus on your well being while never skimping on luxurious comfort. See how our eco-friendly memory foam, latex, air bed and organic mattresses are designed to help you get a healthier night’s sleep.

Sustainability Story

EcoSleep™ products are manufactured with the environment in mind. Using raw materials that are natural, recycled and sustainable. Take for example the castor oil we use to make memory foam for our EcoSleep™ mattresses. Castor plants are a native species in Asia, where they are grown and harvested. Non-native soybeans, the oil of which is used to make much of the memory foam sold today, are usually the product of deforestation. And while castor plants are simply pressed to extract their oil, soybeans require heavy processing. Then there is the latex for EcoSleep™, which is made of the sap of the Hevea brasiliensis tropical rubber tree. And the natural 100% biodegradable bamboo fibers used in EcoSleep™ bamboo ticking. And our New Zealand wool. The list goes on. The bottom line is this: natural ingredients make a healthier product. That is the goal with EcoSleep™ products—to provide our customers with the healthiest, most comfortable sleep available.

DECEMBER 11 is the deadline for sustainable exhibitors at the Winter Las Vegas Market to apply for its
new One Good Guide sustainable directory and signage.
World Market Center is making some big changes to make things better than ever for all sustainable
exhibitors and have asked us to help get the word out.

SUSTAINABLE EXHIBITORS NOW RECOGNIZED FOR HIGH DESIGN
First and foremost, World market Center is merging their stand alone sustainable pavilion into
their most successful showcase, Design + Living. D + L was inspired by Maison D’Objets, imm cologne
and other notable international shows as the home for high fashion, high interest temporaries that
are always a must see for visitors. It occupies prime real estate on the 2nd Floor of Building B and
regularly draws the highest buyer traffic levels at market. WMC recognizes that sustainability has
grown beyond niche status to have much more mainstream appeal and so is including green exhibitors with
other fashionable temps for the first time to give them the benefit of superior exposure and traffic
flow. Exhibitors who experimented with a move to D + L last market had great success so now it is
available to everyone. Leasing has been brisk, reflecting steadily increasing interest in the showcase
and the first signs of life in the retail furniture market at last.

A GOOD GUIDE TO GOOD COMPANIES
World Market Center is also introducing a new Good Guide under their new One Good World program to
help visitors identify legitimately sustainable products through a special section in printed and
online directories and distinctive signage. Unlike other shows that simply allow companies to self
declare, there are specific criteria and a formal vetting process to ensure the legitimacy of claims.
The Guide will include not only temporaries in Design + Living but permanent showrooms as well. There
are no costs to you…all you need to do is apply.
To find out more about leasing opportunities or how to apply for the Good Guide program, please contact
Catherine at cat@sustainablefurnishings.org or call 919-967-1137.

Despite a challenging economic outlook, green building will support 7.9 million U.S. jobs and pump $554 billion into the American economy – including $396 billion in wages – over the next four years (2009-2013), according to a new study from the U.S. Green Building Council and Booz Allen Hamilton. The study also determined that green construction spending currently supports more than 2 million American jobs and generates more than $100 billion in gross domestic product and wages.

The economic impact of the total green construction market from 2000 to 2008, the study found, contributed $178 billion to U.S. gross domestic product; created or saved 2.4 million direct, indirect and induced jobs; and generated $123 billion in wages.

The study also assessed the U.S. Green Building Council’s 19,000-plus member organizations and found that they generate $2.6 trillion in annual revenue, employ approximately 14 million people, come from 29 industry sectors and include 46 Fortune 100 companies.

The study was released at the USGBC’s annual Greenbuild International Conference & Expo, the industry’s largest gathering of representatives from all sectors of the green building movement.

“Our goal is for the phrase ‘green building’ to become obsolete, by making all building and retrofits green – and transforming every job in our industry into a green job,” said Rick Fedrizzi, president, CEO and founding chairman of USGBC. “This study validates the work that the 25,000 people gathered here at Greenbuild, and every member of our movement, do every day.”
The study considered the total value of green buildings and the results include workers from the architects who design them to the construction laborers who pour their foundations to the truck drivers who deliver the materials, in recognition of the how extensive the impact of green building is.

“The study demonstrates that investing in green buildings contributes significantly to our nation’s wealth while creating jobs in a range of occupations, from carpenters to cost estimators,” said Gary Rahl, Officer, Global Government Market, Booz Allen Hamilton. “In many ways, green construction is becoming the standard for development. As a result, it is expected to it is expected to support nearly 8 million jobs over the next five years, a number four times higher than the previous five years.”

The full report can be downloaded at www.usgbc.org/greeneconomy, where one can also find other research, resources, tools and information about green building and its role in the economic recoveries of professionals, businesses and the nation.

In support of the green building industry’s potential to drive tremendous job growth, USGBC has bolstered its commitment to education as a key component of its organizational mission toward a sustainable built environment. A new course catalog at www.usgbc.org/courses helps green building professionals find educational resources and training that support their learning needs at any level – from novice to seasoned pro – and in a variety of learning formats, including live, in-person workshops, live or on-demand online courses and webinars, study materials and reference guides, and other resources. Learn more at www.usgbc.org/education.
