We have a nasty flu in the house now. My older daughter brought it home with her yesterday. My younger one has a bad cold…so far.

I don’t like when they’re sick. It is so easy to take their health for granted and get swept up in the day to day busy-ness.

Colds and Flu’s Stop .You. Where .You. Are. No more errands. No more school. Just rest.

So I will be house-bound for the next few days, and will be resisting the urge to get sick myself.

Between making soups and warm drinks for everyone, I will be trying to finish up some things I want to get done for Christmas and Birthdays.

One of the projects is a Quilt for our almost 4 year old.

I think she is going to love this blueberry fabric!

This year I have decided to design two different Christmas Cards to send out.   Since my schedule has been hectic and it will only get worse as it gets closer to the holidays, my thought was to keep things simple.   I decided the first  card would  be light and fun with slightly non-traditional colors.  I wanted to use the snowmen from “The More the Merrier” level three hostess set.   However I have hit a bit of a glich, in designing the first card I just could not decide which basic card and background color to go with.   I think they both have merit.  The Melon Mambo and Old Olive look good together I just could not decide which would be the basic card and which would be the textured base layer on the card.   So I made one of each and decided to let you vote.   Just click on the words in green “Comments” at the bottom of this post, and let me know which is your favorite. 

CARD RECIPE: Of course all Stampin’-Up products used.  Stamp Sets – The More the Merrier & Snowflake Serenade.  Card Stock – Old Olive, Melon Mambo,  Rich Razzleberry, Whisper White.  Ink – Craft, Basic Black  Classic, Old Olive, Melon Mambo, Rich Razzleberry.  Rich Razzleberry Polka-dot Gross Grain Ribbon, ( I used the solid side up).  Background #1 Textured Plates with Big Shot.

The opening of the 2009 One Step Further exhibition

For the past 2 years Always Quilting has, on behalf of Aurifil threads,  been a proud sponsor of the “One Step Further” exhibition presented by Victorian Quilters Inc.   I think that Aurifil’s range of beautiful textile art threads is perfectly matched with this exhibition, where the artist /craftsperson is encouraged to take their skills, using threads & fabric, one step further.

Susan Cunningham alongside her piece, Landmarks 3, the winner of the Aurifil prize as runner up in the Large Quilt category.

Congratulations to Susan Cunningham, the winner of  the Aurifil prize for her piece “Landmarks 3″ .  This quilt, entered in the Large  Quilt category, was inspired by marks left on the landscape by the  bushfires near Stawell in 2008. Susan used digital imagery, overlays and thread to create a very intriguing and tactile piece.

There were many interesting pieces in this exhibition that made the viewer want to get up “close & personal” to try to work out how the effect had been achieved. I fell in love with a piece by Jenny Bacon, the winner of the 2008 Aurifil prize, so I am now the happy owner of  ”In the Night Garden #2, When the Blackbird Sings”.

Heather & I had driven from Melbourne, for the day, so we had much discussion on the way home about which pieces fitted our personal ideas about “taking one step further” and why particular pieces appealed.  One of the added values of a textile art exhibition, such as this, is the “controversy” and discusion that is generate because each individual has a different view as to what “one step further” means, and as always, the 2009 exhibition lived up to expectations. 

The exhibition runs from 21 November until 13 December (Thursday to Sunday 10am – 4pm) at the Central Goldfields art Gallery, Neill St, Maryborough, Victoria.

The Second Annual Shorewoods Holiday Craft Fair will be happening in Hansville

Saturday December 5th, 9am until 4pm

and

Sunday December 6th, 11am until 3pm.

Come on down and support local crafters….

Noggin’ Toppers and Big Bagel will be there with bells on.

Today I had a few extra children in the house (try 5), and I wanted to do something crafty with them. Since we won’t see them for the upcoming holiday, we decided to make a Thanksgiving craft.

I don’t know where I originally got the idea (it is usually done late at night while perusing Blogs). Sorry.
If you have the Blog info, please let me know and I can give credit where credit is due.

Anyhow, back to the 6 children in the house and our temporary insanity quest for crafty goodness.

Turkey crowns!

I wish I had more pictures because they all came out so great, but let’s face it, me, another Mom and 6 children- we were out numbered by little people wielding glue sticks. I was lucky to get 2 pictures.

What I really love about this was the unique personalities that shone through each and every one. We all had the same components, but the way they were assembled and decorated reflected on each child’s individual creativity.

On another creative note, our oldest Daughter just started knitting again. I can’t even tell you how happy that makes me.

I don’t knit. I do ,however admire those who can. I really am enjoying the fact that I can not help her one little bit on this because I get to see how she learns from others and how she works it out for herself. It is a safe independence.A way for her to assert herself as an individual in a healthy way. Plus, I get to see something without actually having to do it (as well as NOT getting sucked into all the different choices of yarn! I already have quite the fabric habit, I don’t need another).

I am loving these moments of individuality and creative exploration!

Rain rain all the time. This is our life right now.

Along with the cold dampness, is….coffee.
Lots and lots of coffee (and warm drinks for the kids).

…And sew so much sewing!
