Producing home videos of your holidays will be really fun and enjoyable for your family and friends, and also bring you lots of beautiful memories. The best home movies should concentrate on the most wonderful moments and should skip all the uninteresting details that may bore viewers. Trash Humpers is a new movie by Harmony Korine, shot on VHS tape and copied onto other VHS tapes for that familiar tape re-use and re-copied home movie experience. He says of the film:

“I remember when I was a child there was a small group of elderly people who would hang out in the back alleys and under bridges by my house. They always seemed to be getting drunk and dancing. One night I looked out my bedroom window and saw a group of them humping trash cans and laughing. It sounded like they were speaking a strange invented language. This is a movie about them.”

Cornell’s Dance Department features the class Hip-Hop, Hollywood, and Home Movies: Exploring Movement and Media, incorporating home video production.

This course is a laboratory for generating and exploring contemporary dance forms. Monday sessions are devoted to viewing media and discussion. We will be looking at early B-boy films, recent dance-battle documentaries, classic dance clips from Hollywood films, and other related pieces (Black Dance, Show Dance, Art Dance). Wednesday is a laboratory for trying out movements and creating simple dance/music videos (home-movies). This course will be of special value for choreographers using popular dance forms and those interested in the history of popular culture. Everyone must be willing and able to improvise dance moves, teach classmates and exchange movement ideas.

Stasera mi vedo un DVD. Lo metto nel lettore. Il tempo di avviarsi e di permettere al laser di cominciare a leggerne il contenuto. Compare il menu della lingua. Oh, ecco. Vediamo, dov’è l’italiano? Hmm… in che ordine sono queste lingue? Ah, sono in ordine alfabetico in lingua inglese, però il nome delle nazioni è scritto in lingua locale. Solo così si spiega perché Shqip (l’Albania) viene prima di tutti. Sì, ma l’Italia dov’è? Ah, c’è un’altra pagina nel menu? Davvero? Allora, allora, vediamo un po’… Clic. Oh, ecco. E l’Italia? Eccola! Clic, clic, clic. Oh, bene. Parte.

Che cosa? Ancora quelle pubblicità antipirateria? E che diam… Dovrebbero dirmi grazie che ho comprato un DVD originale! Che rabbia, certe cose ti spingono a scaricarli apposta, i film. Dài, su… Next. Come, “operazione non consentita”? Cioè, mi devo sorbire tutto il resto dello spot? Mavvamm… Nooo, che me lo ricordo a memoria. «La pirateria… è contro… la legge». Che paura, me la sto facendo sotto. Io avrei scritto direttamente: «La pirateria uccide», come sulle sigarette. Oh, finalmente è finito. No, la lista delle multe per chi scarica film piratati, no! Basta, vi prego, pietà, pietà!

Oh, dai. Anche questo è scomparso. Il logo della casa cinematografica. Su, ché tra poco inizia. Uh, che cos’è questo? Non è il film che voglio vedere. No, no, non è proprio questo il… Ah, ma è un trailer! Forza, almeno questa me la lasceranno passare. Next. Operazione non consentita? Perdiana… Cioè, mi devo beccare tutti questi minuti di strazio? Nooo, dài… Volevo solo vedere un film… Ma quanto dura? You know what’s funny? Whenever we talk about the U.S. anime industry, it’s usually names like FUNimation or ADV or Geneon USA that pop into our minds, but I have to wonder whether the term should denote those names today. As we’ve witnessed the near collapse of this so called anime industry over the course of these past three years, one might imagine that demand for anime has shrunk so drastically that the industry had to downsize. I wonder if that’s really the case though, seeing as people still download fansubs and stream anime via various video sites, even drawing in new fans that might never had the chance to learn about anime otherwise. More than anything, I believe that demand for anime is actually growing, slowly but surely, it’s just that we’re supposed to be talking about the shrinking home video market. The easiest way out of this discussion is to pin the blame on the negative economic growth; at least it’s coherent with mainstream views! People aren’t buying as much as they used to, that’s a given, then again, anime DVD sales numbers have shrunk drastically more in comparison to the numbers of the overall U.S. economy. Sure, consumers spend less these days, but they still spend money on anime-related products or the fandom, it’s just that the picture we get from the American licensees–the industry–isn’t reflective of the overall situation.

Have people forgot about anime conventions? I know this lulzy guy from Hendane (NOT the yeowee~ guy), and despite the weak U.S. dollar, they aren’t doing that badly, last I heard from him. Of course, they are not the only ones taking money from con attendees. Let’s not forget that all larger cons have some sort of entrance fee, there’s also the hotel, concert tickets, transportation, only after that there’s merchandise and art pieces. As con attendance continues to grow all across the U.S., we can again ask ourselves, how is the excess of growing fandom being harnessed?

I used to run along a joke my former IRC chatroom had been feeding for months, which was circling around my tendency to think about money in terms of anime DVD prices. If this sounds too strange to comprehend, DVD had become a new kind of currency for me and my friends. Whenever someone mentioned getting a new PC component or tickets to a concert or spending a luxurious week abroad, I applied my anime DVD currency system to the discussion and said something like, “Man, x €, that’s like y R2 anime DVDs.” I wanted others to take the hobby as seriously as I did, but naturally I couldn’t shove new priorities down other people’s throats. Despite my relatively unsuccessful attempt at that, some of them did spend money on the hobby. Whether it was by upgrading their PCs, spending bills for online community server space, or unofficial cosplay clothing, bottom line is that they did vest resources in it, even though they weren’t supporting the animation industry in any direct way, most of the time. However, other proponents of this hobby grew from their contributions.

It’s like gang territory dominance. Whites deal meth, Blacks deal crack, Mexicans deal mota, and Nicaraguans deal heroine. There is so much variety out there, but addicts have only so much money to spend and (dare to) enjoy only so many drugs. One contender forces another to downsize operations or go out of business (one way or another). In the case of the anime industry, the short end of the stick goes to the licencees and the distribution and localization companies.

There are a few things these companies could try. Nothing sells better than socialization, right? I wonder how FUNi-ran conventions or otaku parties held state-wide would look like…

Flip (s CSCO) video cameras are known for being stupidly simple, but the product’s migration to the big screen looks to be a pretty complicated affair, if what Dave Zatz is reporting is true. Flipping through FCC product announcements, Zatz found a “FlipShare TV” product manual.

From the looks of it, the set-up has three components: a box you plug into your TV, a remote control and a USB stick. Plug the USB stick into your computer and the box into your TV (via composite or HDMI) and wirelessly stream recorded video to your television. No other details, such as a ship date or pricing, were included. When we contacted Cisco for comment, a rep emailed us with:

We do not comment on alleged products coming to market. As with all our products, we will announce through proper disclosure channels when products are ready and available to our customers.

Granted, we know next to nothing about this supposed box, but it seems clumsy for the usually elegant Flip line. And while this product appears to be targeting families that want to share video easily and may not want to upload it to the Internet, do people really want yet another box under their TV for the sole purpose of watching home movies? Plus any simplicity you gain from not uploading is essentially lost when you have to use two separate devices. It would be cool to see Flip develop its own Roku channel and eliminate the extra set-top hardware. We’ll see if a formal announcement comes in time for the holiday season.
