I always thought it looked so cool when media flashed their badges and got to go behind THE VELVET ROPE. Okay, it usually isn’t really velvet but let’s play pretend here, shall we? I’ll let you in on something. It is pretty freaking cool. See press badge below for proof. You get to go in through the special door, or, in this case, beach access, since we were attending the Atlantic City Air Show, Thunder Over the Boardwalk. Yes, people in front of us got re-directed because they didn’t have the proper pass. I will say the downside to press passes is that you walk a maze to get where you need to be versus regular passes that let you walk right out on to the same beach. You spend the whole day fielding “What press are you with?” “I write online for a website” is by far the best answer since “blogger” gets blank stares even now in our technologically advanced era.

We were invited to attend as press since, well, of course we (some friends and I) write, and even better, we have families. Of course everyone knows Atlantic City, NJ for its casinos. Family friendly and casino don’t really go together. However, there is more to Atlantic City than the glitz and I can promise you, the AC Airshow is one of those things that is perfect for families. Actually, Atlantic City beaches are perfect for families all around. Did you know Atlantic City beaches are FREE? I did not. I knew Wildwood was free. I didn’t know I had another option besides trekking a mile to the actual shoreline, which I have happily done to save on those expensive beach tags.

Traffic going to the Boardwalk wasn’t bad at all. A little slower moving but nowhere near what I expected. I anticipated 30 minutes to get 5 miles. I was wrong. It was about 15. We had a parking pass good for under Boardwalk Hall, which was valued at $20 so we got out even cheaper but I can tell you that $20 is totally worth it for how close to the actual beach you get. Up an escalator and we were in front of the boardwalk. Cross the boardwalk and we were on the beach.

As “press” we were treated to all the cold drinks we could need, lunch, ice cream and snacks. I felt like a VIP. Atlantic City took such good care of us. A shout out to A Magic Mommy, Jersey Family Fun, Karen Martin, and all who made that possible.

We found a spot on the beach and crashed to enjoy the day. I think I was more excited about the airplane show than the rest of my family. I am an airplane geek. I still stop and look up at the sky when I hear an airplane (Told ya I’m an airplane geek).

The kids loved having another chance to hit the beach and splash in the water with my husband and their friend. They dug holes and built sand castles and threw sand. Er, no, that wasn’t my kid. But yeah, my kid WAS the one growling at the sea gulls and chasing them away. Thankfully it was viewed as a comedy show, with more than one person laughing. The growling was because I told him not to scream.

Oh, before I forget, the Air Show is FREE. They had $20 parking, which included being shuttled to the Boardwalk. You know me, right? FREE is my favorite word. Bring your food, pay $20 for parking, get a free fantabulous show AND beach time. You have a fun and frugal day trip or an excuse to splurge on a hotel room. The only thing I would do differently is wait until traffic cleared out a bit more before leaving. I think that if we had waited to leave until 5:30 (about 2 hours after the show ended) we would have had a lot less traffic to deal with. Be prepared!!! It took over an hour to get out to the Expressway. Once we hit the Expressway though, it was smooth sailing. The other thing you want to do is TAKE CHANGE. There isn’t a whole lot of warning that you are going to hit $0.75 toll booths until you do. Be prepared with several dollars worth of quarters.

Now on to the show. With a blimp kick off, parachute teams, Fighter jets, a Coast Guard Search and Rescue demo, GEICO Skytypers, The Caveman Race Boat, which is still not faster than a plane, and so many other jets and planes, it was a day well spent.

My favorite part of the air show was the fact that most, if not all the events were, in a way, a tribute to our military. It was also sobering and hit home that these pilots don’t learn to do this just to wow us and put on a show, they learn these tactics and maneuvers for a greater purpose. These are our Navy, Coast Guard, Army, Air Force, State Police, Medevac – people who put their lives on the line to protect, to serve, and to rescue. To you I say “Thank You.” I also loved the parachute teams. Aside from feeling slightly nauseous at the thought of hurling myself out of a jet from thousands of feet in the air and praying that my chute opened, it was great. Okay fine. My imagination is way too vivid and it scared the living daylights out of me but it was cool to watch at the same time. It’s amazing how they can change direction, keep formation, and land exactly where they want to, on an itty bitty piece of land.

A huge thanks goes to the VisitAC, A Magic Mommy, Honest Tea, and Fralingers Taffy for sponsoring this great event for us. Let me say, the swag was AWESOME!

♥ Did you know that the uncontrollable laughter that comes with being tickled is actually our body’s natural defense mechanism. Scientists have just discovered that the feeling of uncontrollable laughter is caused by panic. Some people are so ticklish that they begin laughing even before they are touched. This study come from brain scientists at the University College London.

By John Ostapkovich

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Who knew that a social experiment could taste so good?

On a South Philadelphia sidewalk between Pat’s and Geno’s, honesty was put to the test today by Honest Tea.

At the unmanned kiosk, there was a display of chilled Honest Tea products and a clear plastic lockbox into which to put money for them.

“We have a couple of Honest Tea employees around, hiding in plain sight, in plain clothes, and basically we probably have about 60 bottles up there now, and then every half hour or so we refresh them to make sure they stay cold and refreshing and delicious,” says Honest Tea’s Matt O’Brien.

Laura and her friend put money in the box.

” ‘Cuz it’s a karmic thing,” she explained. “If you’re honest, if you do the right thing, it’ll come back to you.”

This was actually an experiment into the honor system and results from Philadelphia will be compared to 29 other cities. Last year even the least honest towns were paying at near 90 percent, says O’Brien.

“Overall, it’s something that we’re happy about. It goes to show that the honor system works. The results from last year were inspiring and we hope to do better this year.”

The honesty stats will be out next Monday.

A portrait of the precocious little ELOISE hangs in the Palm Court Passage. Hilary Knight dreamed up this cute illustration of a little girl who lived in the Plaza. I have all the books…which Hillary signed for me years ago. Kay Thompson wrote the story…and when she died all the rights reverted to her estate.

Todd English has added another dozen concessioners to his FOOD COURT in the cellar of the Plaza. I savored a hugh slice of vanilla cake slathered in caramel icing…….. 1500 calories.

I was watching TV a few weeks ago and did a double-take when this commercial came on:

Honest Tea! I first became aware of Honest Tea when our campus began its journey to become a Fair Trade University. I started noticing the product in local grocery stores with the “bucket boy” Fair Trade logo (which, by the way, Honest Tea is staying with Fair Trade USA certification). And I was really disappointed that I couldn’t make it to NYC in April for The Great Recycle event – I applaud their efforts for awareness and action when it comes to recycling the bottles the tea comes in. But I had never seen any advertising for Honest Tea – until this TV commercial appeared. And not only has Honest Tea released its first television commercial, I saw a billboard today in Philadelphia for Honest Tea.

The advertising does not focus on the teas that feature Fair Trade ingredients, but all the bottles I have seen in the commercial and on the billboards show bottles with the Fair Trade logo. I wonder if this will increase purchases of the Fair Trade varieties? It would be great to see a mention or focus on the Fair Trade line of Honest Tea in this new advertising campaign – it seems that Honest Tea is missing an opportunity to inform consumers what this icon means on the bottle and what it means to the global community.

We had a chance to go to the Blogger Beach Bash in Avalon in front of the Golden Inn thanks in large part to Joey Fortman’s hard work and quite a few generous sponsors.

We did not stay at the Golden Inn this year but wish we could have and heard such great things from those who did stay. We were greeted with a smile by the courteous doorman and directed where to go by the front desk. Registering for the event was a breeze and we were given beach tags, swag bags with information on the sponsors, “You Can Dig It Sand Tools” from Sandman Matt and the Sand Masters, Text bands from Hallmark, and Boogie Wipes.

The staff at Golden Inn had prepared and laid out a beautiful continental breakfast with bagels, pastries, fruit, juice, and coffee. Denise from The Painted Home , one of the sponsors and a fellow Philly Social Media Mom, decorated the tables. Let me tell you, this lady has a creative eye and can work her magic with simple items you can find in your cabinets or a thrift store. Her business card intrigued me even more because one of the words that made it on her card is TRASHPICKER. Lady, you are my friend.

Next we hit the beach. It was gorgeous today but one of those “no matter how much sunscreen you slather on you will burn” days. That part isn’t so fun. I tried, really, I did, but it was a lost cause. My poor light skinned boys and I burned. My daughter, as usual, just tanned a little more. Once we got to the beach there was no missing the main attraction. Sandman Matt was hard at work.

I have no idea how many hours it took but his masterpieces were (are) gorgeous. Even better, he taught us all how to MAKE OUR OWN. My 9 year old was hanging on to every word. He can’t wait to try it out for himself with our “You Can Dig It Sand Tool Kit”, complements of Sandman Matt. Turreted castles with winding stair steps and brick wall detailing fit for any princess (or prince). I can’t wait to see my son’s masterpieces in the future.

Lunch was provided in part by Honest Tea (check out my kids’ review) and Pop Chips. I love Honest Tea and the Chile Lime Popchips were so good – the best way to jazz up a hotdog for lunch is with some fancy and yummy sides. Cupcakes were courtesy of Truly Custom Cakery. Oops! I ate mine before I could get a picture.

We hung out by the pool for awhile but a tired mama and tired kids made going home early just a bit easier.

Honest Tea – lightly sweetened, highly refreshing
Pop Chips – Pop another one? So addicting!
Boogie Wipes – easy to carry, easy to use.

And lastly, to my handsome chauffeur for the day – my husband.

UPDATE: I just heard that I have a chance to win a girlfriend’s weekend getaway valued at $1,000. Um, yes please!! Would love a chance to go back to Avalon.

Disclosure: I received free product for this event but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

This morning, I’m off to the Big Apple! About an hour or two after I complete my long training

This morning, I’m off to the Big Apple! About an hour or two after I complete my long training run, my mom and I will be on our way to New York City. Why, you may ask? Well, I’m attending Her Campus’ first ever Intercollegiate Conference at the Sentry Centers on Saturday!

Her Campus is an online magazine aimed at college-aged women. I recently became one of the Campus Correspondents for Her Campus Virginia Tech; meaning that I am one of two representing Tech! I’m super excited to begin my position. I was involved in journalism in high school, so when I was offered the opportunity to join, I jumped right in. I credit Her Campus to my newfound obsession with blogging. While a contributing writer, I wrote features and weekly blogs. It was a lot of fun, and I look forward to continuing that.

We had a bunch of problems my first year with HCVT, mainly because the branch itself was new to Virginia Tech. We worked hard to make our name known and gain a larger audience. While we succeeded on a smaller level, I hope we can grow in popularity in the upcoming year.

As the representative for Tech at the conference this year, I look forward to talking to other “collegiettes” about their branches and asking them for advice on how to improve our own! Aside from chatting with girls from other schools, we’ll be hearing from some great speakers! I’m the most excited to hear the Keynote speaker, Ann Shoket, the Editor-in-Chief of Seventeen Magazine! Being the EIC of some sort of print publication has been my dream ever since I can remember, so I can’t wait to hear what she has to say.

Here’s a list of the other speakers:

Anna Post – Emily Post’s great-great-grandaughter and co-author of Emily Post’s Etiquette
Jaqui Lividini – CEO & Founding Partner at Lividini & Co.
Annie, Stephanie & Windsor – Her Campus Founders
Taylor, Chelsea & Brittany – Her Campus Executive Team
Raakhee Mirchandani – Fashion Editor and Deputy Features Editor at New York Daily News
Christina Gibson of Marina Maher Communications
Michelle Murray of Contiki Travel
Christina Wallace of Quincy Apparel
Taylor Truden – Associate Blog Editor at the Huffington Post
Elyssa Goodman – Writer, Photographer & Social Media Consultant at Miss Manhattan
Amanda First – Editorial Assistant at Prevention Magazine
Alice Chen – Editorial Assistant at Lucky Magazine

The remainder of the conference will include panels, workshops, and more networking!

Okay, so let’s talk about why I’m ACTUALLY so excited to go: the sponsors. Namely, the Chipotle-sponsored lunch. Other sponsors include Juicy Couture, hint, PopChips, Lord & Taylor, stila cosmetics, Alex & Ani, candy store, svelte, and Honest Tea. Juicy Couture is also sponsoring an after party at their store in the city. I’m hoping to snag a sweet swag bag

All joking aside, I’m really excited for this conference. I’ve been to a bunch of national high school journalism conventions, but I know this one will be on a completely different level (and estrogen-filled).

When my mom and I arrive in the city early this afternoon, we plan to wander around and go out for a nice dinner. I’m hoping to go to one of my favorite spots in the city: Rockefeller Plaza (where the TODAY show is filmed). Although all my TODAY show faves are abroad covering the London Olympics, I always feel like I’m walking on hallowed ground when I’m there.

Busy weekend, wouldn’t have it any other way!

One of my Freelance Prentice services/skills is promotional work (sales model, promo model, brand ambassador, booth babe, etc). Some people may find the idea of approaching strangers and talking to them while scantily clad in a short skirt and branded camisole unappealing or intimidating, but I love it. I’ve worked all kinds of venues, from bars to concerts to liquor stores to drug stores to festivals to strip clubs. It’s fun.

Oftentimes when I work at a store, I run into employees who ask “How can you deal with ‘no’ so easily? That would make me feel awful.” Well, I just don’t take it personally. As a matter of fact, I am amused by how far people will go to avoid me, especially when I’m toward the front of the store. It reminds me of how I avoid Girl Scouts during cookie season! It cracks me-up, so I will share the most popular ways I’ve seen people Dame Dodge:

The Aisle Dodge
“Oh shit. It’s one of those girls,” some huffy, cranky sow seethes to herself. She scowls and immediately turns her cart into the first aisle possible, even though there is nothing on that row that she needs or wants. To Aisle Dodgers, it seems worth while to circle the store in the most time consuming, inefficient way possible just to get past that promo gal and her kind words and swag and coupons. “I showed that hussy,” thinks the jerk who just turned a five minute errand into half an hour.

Deliberate Refusal to Make Eye Contact
“Oh gosh, there’s one of those coupon ladies,” some shy lady panics as she makes eye contact with me for a nano second. “Maybe if don’t I look at her, she won’t notice me. Look straight ahead…oh golly…lower your eyes to the ground…I think I can still see her in my peripheral vision…ouch!” She accidentally trips because she wasn’t watching where she was going. And yes, I always see you, even if you try to use lack of eye contact to become invisible.

Fake Cell Phone Call
I highly doubt so many people suddenly get a phone call the moment they step in the door and see me. Don’t worry, bro. I won’t tell anybody that you’re chatting with your imaginary friend via cell. You might want to see a doctor about that though…

Sneaking By
“Oh no,” says a gentleman who only wants to buy a single, pint of cheap whiskey. “I don’t have time to listen to that beer chick…Ooh!” He exclaims as a couple of women are ensnared in my marketing trap. “This is my chance!” He tiptoes around the conversation and darts to the mini bottles.

Sneak a Peek From Afar
Moneybags McCheaperson wants to know what I have to offer without talking to me. Understandable. So this person will go into creeper mode and Pedobear my table, peeking from afar. If the swag, samples or coupons look worthwhile, McCheaperson will come out of hiding and approach me, usually from behind a display, and say “Hey little girl. What do you have for me?” Creepy.

GET YO ASS OVER HERE AND BUY MY BOOZE…THEN I’MMA EAT YOUR BRAINZZZ!

Run Away
This is a smart move. The average, power walker will likely be faster than a girl in stilettos who is stuck behind a table, so unless I decide to jump my station hurdle-style and sprint toward customers like a zombie stripper, this is a solid choice. Kudos.

Be a Dick
Honesty is the best policy, and being mean just makes it all the more satisfying and effective. This is the Dame Dodger that makes cashiers cringe and ask the question at the top of this post. Some customers can be honest without being dicks (“I’m sorry, Sweetie, but I’m in a hurry,” or “Not today, thanks.”), but lots of these people snap, bark, growl and give the stank eye. I honestly don’t mind because A) It saves my breath, and B) It makes other customers feel sorry for me.

Got questions? Well, allow me to quench your thirst. Instagram users: From mbuttz: Do you recommend

Got questions? Well, allow me to quench your thirst.

Instagram users:

From mbuttz: Do you recommend Crystal Light in your water? It’s only 5 calories, but I’m wondering if it’s really not a good choice or not?

A: A little background on Crystal Light: it has 5g of calories and a little sodium with 0g of sugar. There’s also different versions of the Crystal Light packets such as the energy, mocktails, and pure. The energy packets may convince you to add it into your water since it’s enhanced with vitamins and minerals, but I suggest getting those from whole foods, fruits and vegetables. To answer your question, no I do not recommend adding Crystal Light to your water. It may say that there is 0g of sugar, but if you read the ingredients carefully some have aspartame and acesulfame which are artificial sugars. Aspartame alone is one of the most dangerous artificial sweeteners out there. It also contains phenylalanine which is toxic in high doses and artificial colors which can cause allergic reactions. If you can’t muster the energy to drink plain water, try adding fresh fruit or vegetables in it, such as cucumbers or blueberries, strawberries, pineapples, etc. For more info please check out LiveStrong.com.

From stellarmichele: Second best alternative to water. I know water is best and I add lemon, cucumber, mint, etc. to mix things up, but sometimes you need something else to quench your thirst. Suggestions?

A: If I’m not drinking water then I am drinking tea. Green tea, black tea, white tea, oolong tea, herbal tea, etc. There are so many flavors out there and you can go hot or cold when choosing to drink it. Honest Tea is a great brand, using organic ingredients, but I would be careful on sugar content and the amount of concentrated juices they use. The least amount of ingredients with natural/organic flavors would be something I’d opt for. Also check out David’s Tea; they feature amazing tea flavors each month.

From oddriii: I’m really terrible at remembering to drink water. What do you do to make sure you drink enough? And do you drink just tap water or buy bottles?

A: I have so many bottles at home I can’t even count them on my fingers. I make sure I have a back up bottle in my car and in my backpack so I am able to refill at all times. Ever since I started working out I found myself always craving for water. I down one 32oz bottle the second I get in the kitchen after I wake up in the morning. Before I eat I make sure to drink water beforehand. Before I workout I drink water and my protein shake on top of that. After I workout I also drink another bottle. If you’re thirsty drink water. Yes, there are tons of benefits to drinking 64oz of water daily. Not only does it meet your body’s hydration needs but it also helps your body process nutrients and substances, it regulates body temperature, helps pass along wastes in the large intestines, etc. Try slowly with drinking water before a meal and one in the morning and one an hour before bed. I drink tap water when I’m at a restaurant and filtered water when I am home.

From _jennymarie_: I would like to know if you juice beets and if you have a recipe?

A: Yes, I do juice beets and love cooking it, as well. Here’s a favorite juice recipe called the ABC Juice:

1 apple (moderate); cut into wedges

1 beet root (moderate); cut into wedges

2 carrots

1 inch piece of ginger

1/2 lemon; juiced

Blend the four ingredients together and squeeze 1/2 lemon

From s_snipes1: What is the best thing to drink besides water? I’m addicted to diet coke.

A: Have you tried water with added fruit or vegetables in it? That would be my first option. If you can’t take it for more than a week then try tea with no added sugar in it. I know it’s hard, but try to ween yourself off of diet coke and instead drink water. You’ll be less dehydrated and you’ll feel better, too.

From soby83: What workout supplements do you suggest to better support the immune system?

A: For immune system I suggest taking in whole foods and not taking it in pill form unless you’re highly deficit in it. Your body is accustomed to taking in nutrients in food form. Probiotics are known to help with the immune system. An example would be yogurt or kombucha tea. Try taking in foods such as asparagus, beets, broccoli, carrots, kale, mangoes, spinach, sweet potatoes, watermelon, berries, cauliflower, chard and red peppers. Including these foods in your diet will help your immune system way better than consuming it in pill form.

From evilcunt: Your thoughts on two-a-days.

A: I do two-a-days three times a week, weights in the morning and cardio at night. As long as I have time for it, then I will do it, but I take an extra rest day because of the impact I put on my body and I want to make sure that my muscles are recovering. If you do decide to do two-a-days, make sure your diet is sufficient enough to sustain you through out the day and consult your physician to make sure you are healthy for this rigorous workout routine. It also doesn’t matter when you do either, but try to split up weights and cardio.

From gemslove_th: What do you suggest for a pre workout drink for energy?

A: I have always drank whey protein before my workouts, that is after I eat a balanced meal of rich protein food, a simple carb, like sweet potato, and vegetables. If you’re looking for energy during your workouts try sipping on some Gatorade.

From kimmy2too: Can I drink tequila and still lose weight?

A: Whatever poison you choose usually has a combination of carbs, sugar and ethanol. Alcohol is absorbed in your bloodstream giving you the tipsy feeling, then the carbs and sugar go to the traditional digestive route while ethanol goes to your liver. Ethanol has no nutritional value so it is burned off first. The sugar and carbs are stored as fat. Alcohol also dehydrates the muscles making muscle growth slower. There’s a lot of other factors like decrease protein synthesis, blood sugar level dropping which triggers hunger reflex, and it impairs judgement. So, no, you cannot drink and still lose weight.

Held at the Clinic’s flagship site at3787 South Vermont Avenue, the event attracted the attention of parents and children alike with its festive banners and dancing balloon man, and featured pony rides, magic shows, and free food for the whole family.

As it had every year for the last 13 years, FunFest offered a day of family-oriented fun for parents and their young children alongside access to essential community and health resources. These services included medical and dental screenings; WIC, Cal Fresh, Head Start, and Medi-Cal/Healthy Families enrollment; healthy nutrition workshops; and mental health screenings. Participating community organizations included: El Nido, USC Ostrow School of Denistry,Hubert Humphries Medical Center,CalFresh/DPSS, El Nido, First 5 LA,South Central Family Health Center,CADepartment of Insurance, USC Explorers, USC Kid Watch, Great Beginnings for Black Babies, South Los Angeles Health Project, Network for a Healthy California and the LA Lead Department.

Close to 100 volunteers worked to make the event possible for its 850 attendees. Volunteers from local businesses El Clasificado, 1st Enterprise Bank, and UltraPro formed teams to contribute their time to the community. To the delight of the children, the Los Angeles Fire Department Station #15 made a surprise appearance under the direction of Captain Burgess.

This year, the Clinic emphasized healthy eating habits at FunFest through a revamping of the traditional snack station fare. The Clinic provided healthy alternatives to festival food, including organic, salt-free seasoned popcorn, sugar-free sno-cone syrup, turkey dogs, and organic refreshments courtesy of Honest Tea.

Happy families thanked the volunteers on their way out. “This is such a great event for the whole family,” remarked one mother. “We’ll be sure to come back next year.”

Thursday means Eat by Stars. This week is five grocery items picked at random. Including a sample from some new type of mashed up animal. Very sci-fi.

Also, apparently this week I couldn’t find much worthy of a healthy rating. I promise to do better next week.

Honest Sweet Tea®

Per bottle: calories 100, fat 0g, carbs 25g, protein 0g

It’s sweet tea. Sweet tea is a sugar loaded soft drink. However, the folks at Honest Tea give you the best option if you’re hankering for this southern classic. It uses only 5 ingredients with nothing requiring a chemistry degree to decifer. Plus, for you hippies out there, they use organic sugar and free trade tea.

Jennie O’ Turkey Ham®

Per 6 ounce (palm size) serving: calories 180, fat 9g, carbs 63g, protein 24g, (salt 63% DV)

Is there a TurPiggy farm somewhere producing all these hybrid Turkey/Pork options? Turkey Ham makes no sense. When something doesn’t make sense, don’t eat it. Yes, that includes turkey bacon. Like the ham variety, it’s full of fillers and processed beyond belief. Get the real thing. Ham/Bacon made from actual pigs.

VanCamp’s Pork and Beans®

Per can: calories 385, fat 3.5g, carbs 80.5g, protein 21g, (salt 56%)

Unlike our Turkey Ham this product has pork in it. Sadly pork is listed as an ingredient in “contains less than 2%” section. So we have pork and beans with very little pork. Perhaps it should be called “Beans, other stuff, some sugar, and pork”. Doesn’t quite roll off the tongue as well, huh? Leave this on the shelf.

Light Hidden Valley Ranch Singles®

Per cup: calories 200, fat 17g, carbs 7g, protein 2.5g, (salt 29%DV)

This is one of the worst serving offenders I’ve seen. The package indicates 80 calories per serving. It’s natural to assume that’s one cup. Not a chance. You need to be a math whiz to figure out the true nutritional info. Luck for you, math was my best subject. And I have a calculator on my smart phone.

Oregon Canned Blueberries in Light Syrup®

Per can: calories 330, fat 0g, carbs 75g, protein 3g

These delicious and super healthy blueberries have been defiled by a sugary syrup mixture. For shame! Promise me you’ll never get any fruit in “light syrup”. Promise!

Today’s guest blogger is Michael Verdi, a corps member currently serving on the PS 149 team in East New York, Brooklyn. Michael graduated from Florida Gulf Coast University where we majored in Environmental Studies and minored in Journalism and International Studies. When Michael discovered there wasn’t a recycling program at his school, he decided to combine his passions and implement a “Green Team.”

The Green Team in action sorting drink pouches to earn points for their school!

In addition to fulfilling the academic needs of the students I have the privilege of working with each day at P.S. 149 in East New York, I have also worked hard to incorporate my personal passion into my service. Having just graduated last year with a degree in Environmental Studies, it is an important goal of mine to instill a sense of environmental stewardship in the students I work with on a daily basis. This led me to organize a yearlong recycling initiative at my school, run by a group of about 40 students, called the “Green Team.” Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 were given the opportunity to sign up for the Green Team back in November, as long as they had signed permission slips from both their parent and teacher indicating that their classwork and behavior were in good enough standing to participate. Every week at P.S. 149, students on the Green Team are picked up from their classrooms by a City Year corps member to collect the paper, plastic, and aluminum recycling from all the other classrooms in the building. The Green Team is also responsible for facilitating the collection and storage of used drink pouches. These pouches are packaged and mailed to a company called TerraCycle, which recycles them and awards points for each container they receive. These points are then used to earn money for the school.

On April 30, I took 24 students from PS 149′s Green Team on a field trip to an event in Times Square called “The Great Recycle” co-hosted by Honest Tea and Terracycle. The event featured a 30-foot inflated recycling bin. The night before, I wrote a comment on wall of the event’s official Facebook page. Seth Goldman, the founder of Honest Tea, and a representative from another company called Recyclebank were among the event coordinators who replied to my comment and anticipated our arrival. We brought along 303 recyclable beverage containers that we had been collecting for about two weeks, which we counted and exchanged for points. Students then climbed an elevated stage in front of the 30-foot blown-up recycling container, rang a gong, and pledged their commitment to recycle in order to earn even more points for our group. As a surprise treat, the Green Team also took it upon themselves to recite the poem, “My Mind is a Pearl,” which they recite every morning after The Pledge of Allegiance, for a large audience of Times Square tourists. Students then used their points to purchase prizes made from recycled materials. Prizes included t-shirts, backpacks, tote bags, and various organic snacks and juices. GrowNYC, a local organization focused on gardening education, was also present at the event. They provided a mini-lesson for our students on urban gardening, showcasing gardening equipment that was completely rendered from recycled materials.

“I liked the field trip because we saw a lot of cool stuff, like benches made from plastic bottles,” said Tiffany, a fourth grader on the Green Team. “I love being on the Green Team because I get to help the community and the earth with my friends. It makes school more fun.”

I take comfort in the idea that the Green Team provides my students with senses of pride and responsibility. They have truly taken ownership of the program, and I receive dozens of inquiries each day from other students interested in signing up. In addition to embracing their new leadership roles, students have also begun to show signs of increased awareness and concern for environmental integrity and the concept of sustainability. The Green Team is the legacy I have chosen to leave behind at P.S. 149, and I feel confident that the students on this year’s team are invested enough to successfully pass the torch along to their classmates for years to come.
