Acne is a very difficult skin problem to treat because it affects everyone differently. Also there are so many acne products out on the market, making it hard to choose which one is right for you.

Aloe Vera has many great uses, but one of the best uses for it is curing acne. The watery gel from the Aloe Vera plant is a highly effective natural cure against acne.

Washing your skin using harsh chemicals will cause your skin to dry out. Although oily skin is very prone to acne, it should be noted that people with dry skin can also experience severe acne problems.

Another useful natural remedy that you can prepare at home will be ICE! Yes ice! Ice can help to reduce the irritation on our face. By doing so, we will not try to scratch our face and cause further inflammation.

Zeno acne clearing device is a thermal device which is very easy to use and brings about fast results. It is most effective for pustules and furuncles in their very early stage.

Yes, you can’t get away from it. Exercise can do wonders for your skin because it makes your skin “breathe” by opening up your pores and allowing your body to “detox” through sweating.

Glycolic Acid: Some over-the-counter creams and gels contain glycolic acid that can also help control acne. It works on the pores by preventing older cells from building up and clogging the pores.

This is important knowing that most of the foods we eat do not contain all the vitamins and minerals that are required for maintaining the health of our skin.

You are supposed to wash your face atleast three times a day, but you still have that oily feeling on the T section between the forehead and the nose.

To get rid of acne you must first detoxify your body of all the harmful toxins. You will then need to follow a natural acne regime. This involves having a healthy diet and doing regular exercises on a daily basis.

Another way to help get rid of acne is not to pop your pimples. If you pop your pimples it will only lead to scaring, and feature brake outs in the same area.

To stop acne breakouts you can use a juice made from mint leaves. Mint has been used to get rid acne for centuries. Take some mint leaves and squeeze the juice out of them.

Acne has many degrees of intensity. At the lowest degree, there are many ways to get rid of acne. Cleanliness and hygiene are the most important remedies.

Simply applying Honey on the skin as a mask for 10 minutes everyday will make a huge to your infected areas. In less than a week, you will notice you skin getting more and more clearer by the day.

The act of washing your pillowcase often and using clean towels will help to prevent blackheads and pimples before they appear because they are simply clogged pores from not taking care of your skin in many cases.

Like I said earlier, I don’t like turkey and it’ll just be me by myself for Thanksgiving. All of my friends went home and I’m not visiting family this year. I don’t mind! I’ve been looking forward to it all month.

ALYAVILLE: Things did not go as planned last Thanksgiving, and as a result I had a lot of redeeming

ALYAVILLE: Things did not go as planned last Thanksgiving, and as a result I had a lot of redeeming to do. At least when it came to my bread. My friend Z had an early potluck thanksgiving dinner with her friends, and I volunteered to bring something in the bread/biscuit category, something I rarely ventured into but always enjoyed doing (I think my deep unadulterated love for bread has kept me from baking too much – I’d be a ginormous doughy ball of glee if that were the case). Having found a recipe for slightly sweet honey biscuits, I thought, “Hells Yeah! This sounds delectable!” and thus the morning of, set out to create these glorious buns.

First Mistake right there. Should have tried it out earlier. When my first batch turned into strangely unleavened rocks, I thought I best try again, step by step, ever so slowly and meticulously. Buuutt…. To no avail. Same result. Saddened and more than a little embarrassed, I arrived at my friend’s home with the strange concoctions and a few cans of Pillsbury crescent rolls. The crescent rolls were a hit.

So this year, same event, same friends, same potluck, and I nearly ran from the challenge but decided I had to try again, just had to. So I dared to do bread once more. I did some searching on the ‘net, came across a few recipes and decided to do a few trial runs early on to make sure all was well. And guess what?? All turned out supremely well.

I settled on Cheddar biscuits, which I altered slightly into honey-cheddar biscuits (my insatiable sweet tooth revealed this yummy combination to me). Then I made it Honey-Wheat Cheese biscuits when I changed the flour ran out of cheddar and mixed in some mozzarella. And this time, no crescent rolls in sight – they turned out light, soft, and just scrumptious to dip into some gravy or cranberry sauce and sink your teeth into. There would be no feeding the dog with my biscuits this year (which I believe was the ultimate fate of the monstrosities from last year). Redemption is Sweet!

Redemption is cheesy!

Ingredients

2 cups unbleached flour — sifted (wheat flour tastes really good, in my opinion, but white is just fine)

4 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

1 cup sharp cheddar cheese — grated (adding a milder cheese too will add to the texture without overwhelming the taste buds)

1/4 cup butter (4 tbsp)

2/3 cup milk

3-4 tbsp honey

Begin by Sifting all your dry ingredients togeth

er: flour, baking powder, salt, and then mixing in the cheese.

Cut your butter into the dry mix, breaking it into pieces but not mixing it in too vigorously, and then pour in your milk. Start mixing and folding the batter all together until it forms a soft dough, but again, don’t work it all in too much or else the dough will be dense and your bread will turn out tough. I learned this step from experience, oy.

Flatten your dough out a bit and dig a well to drizzle your honey into, starting with only 2 tbsp first. Fold the sticky ball over on itself a few times to incorporate the honey, then repeat with remaining honey..

Sprinkle a board or tabletop with flour and knead the dough few times there, before pressing it out to about ½ inch thick. Cut out biscuit pieces – now you can use a cookie cutter, or just a knife and trace out whatever you like. You could even be adventurous if you choose and m

ake them the shape of a turkey for Thanksgiving. Just have fun.

Place then on a baking sheet and into a preheated oven at 450 F, for about 25-30 minutes, or until they are lightly browned and springy to the touch. I can still smell the cheddary goo

dness melting inside…

Preferably serve them hot, so that your guests can instantly warm up and melt into the sweet, soft, and cheesy biscuits that are sure to steal the glory from that turkey, hehe. Or not.

Next time, I’m going to try out Cream Biscuits… hmm…

It’s been an absolute age since I last posted, mostly because it’s been a manic few week

It’s been an absolute age since I last posted, mostly because it’s been a manic few weeks and the fun (haha yes, note the intense sarcasm here) hasn’t stopped. Luckily today I woke up to a beautifully sunny, albeit cold day and having completed my mission to find pandan leaves in Chinatown yesterday, I was determined to serve up some delicious-looking and tasting delights for you all.

It’s officially winter here in the middle of nowhere (best known as Buckinghamshire), so I was in dire need of something warm and comforting, but also quite exotic. Whilst playing around in mangroves and waterfalls in Singapore and Malaysia, my friends and I often came across various local delights such as pandan leaves in desserts and beverages. These desserts would usually also contain nuts or coconut to complement the delicate taste of pandan. Pandan itself has been hailed the ‘vanilla of the East’, despite not actually tasting of vanilla at all – the allusion to vanilla is derived from the way that pandan is used to flavour desserts and sweets.

Coconut is a perfect complement to pandan, and cashew nuts are also often used in oriental cuisine so a pairing between these two ingredients would surely produce a smashing accompaniment to a calming brew of pandan tea? Although I found it amusing that in all my exotic ingredients I’ve still managed to come up with the time old classic of a cuppa and a biscuit.

Making these cookies was relatively simple, although you do need various ingredients which are easily found in most supermarkets:

240g plain flour

60g rice flour

40g cornflour

60g coarsely chopped cashew nuts

60g desiccated coconut

125g unsalted butter (at room temperature)

150g caster sugar

½ tsp vanilla extract

4 tbsp whole milk

Start off by creaming the butter and sugar together, until light and fluffy. Add the vanilla essence and beat well.

Now you can either chop the cashew nuts roughly, or you can take the easier option which is to put the cashew nuts into a resealable plastic food bag, close it and take a rolling pin to it to reduce the nuts to small pieces. This is a wonderful stress relieving activity! Then, mix the desiccated coconut with the contents of the food bag.

Measure out the three types of flour, sift them into a separate bowl and add the cashew/coconut mixture. Combine thoroughly before adding the butter mixture. Mix well to give a breadcrumb-like texture.

At this point you will probably start using your hands to manipulate the mixture into a dough. Add the milk a tablespoon at a time, mixing thoroughly to form a dough. Work the dough together with your hands until it starts to come clean away from the sides of the mixing bowl. Knead the dough onto a well-floured surface until it is smooth, then wrap in cling film and refridgerate for one hour.

Pre-heat your oven to 160°C and grease and line two baking trays generously. Once the hour has elapsed, take your dough out of the refridgerator, divide it into equal pieces (usually about 3 or so) and roll out the dough to a 1cm thickness. Using a cookie-cutter, cut out shapes and place onto the baking tray about an inch apart.

Whilst your cookies are cooling down, you can prepare the pandan tea:

Honey to sweeten

You can buy pandan leaves from most Asian food supermarkets or Thai speciality markets. I found mine in a small store in Chinatown, London. While fresh pandan leaf is ideal for this recipe, you could probably use frozen to the same effect, but would be advised to defrost it thoroughly first. Wash your pandan leaf to get rid of any dirt that might be from the packaging. Then, cut the leaf up into small sections, about 2 inches across and shred using a fork.

Place the shredded pandan leaf into a small saucepan and pour the boiling water over. Steep for 5 minutes so as to release the aroma of the pandan leaf. Add the tea bag and brew according to taste – I didn’t want a strong tea taste, so opted to brew for only 1 minute; obviously if you want a stronger tea, leave the tea bag in for longer. Remove the tea bag before serving and sweeten with honey if required.

A delicately comforting snack, cashew nut and coconut cookies provide a lovely accompaniment to pandan tea, and you can easily dip the cookies into the honey for a sweeter taste. A touch of the exotic brought to your table.

There’s an e-mail being passed around the internet suggesting people can use onions to combat the fl

There’s an e-mail being passed around the internet suggesting people can use onions to combat the flu. Apparently an unpeeled onion can absorb flu virus and bacteria. The article advocates buying some onions and, without removing the dried outside layer, placing them in bowls around your home. This décor tip obviously will not make you the Martha Stewart of your block – but then again, if Martha comes down with chills and fever and you don’t, you will have the last laugh while she hacks away in her colour-co-ordinated mansion.

I’m not advocating skipping your swine or seasonal flu shot, but I can’t see how a little backup onion therapy could hurt. After all, a footnote in the same article states authoritatively that onion and garlic “saved many from the black plague years ago.” I don’t want the black plague and I know you don’t either, so don’t dismiss this onion thing out of hand … as I tried to tell Kayak Guy, when he inquired into our updated, onion-themed décor.

K.G. isn’t buying in. Maybe because he’s still ticked about the honey. I had read on the internet that honey can help with minor burns and sinusitis. Just coat the burn with honey, it said. So when K.G. complained about his sinuses, I suggested the same approach. Turns out the honey was supposed to go into some warm tea. Who knew?

After all, my friend Lovera had previously passed me an e-mail which advocated swabbing your nostrils each day with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water. Apparently this can “bring down the viral population” and help prevent any H1N1 molecules that might have attached in there from proliferating. K.G. happened to spot me with a swab stuck in each nostril. Not my best look, I admit. But if it makes the bad bugs back off, I’m up for an occasional salty swab.

Which is more than I can say for K.G. Even when his Kayak Ear was bothering him, he wouldn’t hear of using olive oil, which I was sure I’d read about on the Net as an ear remedy. Or maybe it was yogurt? No, the yogurt was for thrush. I’m not sure what thrush is, but I’m stocking up on fruit-bottom, just in case. I’d suggest you do the same. And while you’re at the store, don’t forget the onions for your coffee table display. An ounce of prevention . . .

What home remedies do you recommend? (I can’t wait to try them out on K.G. )

11.45 am – 12.21 pm: Milk with Spanish honey — my dad is determined to find The Perfect Honey, so he has several kinds in the pantry. Also, pieces of baguette with Cabot Clothbound Cheddar, Tomme Crayeuse and Brebis Ossau.

2.35 pm: Coke Zero (!) and quarter of an orange pepper that I’m supposed to be dicing for tabbouleh. The dog begs for a piece of the pepper’s spongy innards; it’s a favorite snack, along with cucumber peels.

3.18 – 4.14 pm: Light lunch of tabbouleh and oven-roasted Brussels sprouts.

9.45 pm: La Chouffe at Vol de Nuit.

10.15 pm – 1.03 am: Dinner at Babbo with Joann and Keith. We debate over whether we want the traditional or pasta tasting menus before deciding on pasta. Our meal consists of the following: black tagliatelle with parsnips and pancetta; “casunzei” with poppy seeds; garganelli with “funghi trifolati;” pyramid-shaped ravioli with pomodoro; papperdelle bolognese; cacciotta fritters with honey and thyme; and chocolate with shaved dried chilis. I swap my full plate for Keith’s empty one, much to Joann’s dismay. I can’t eat spicy food, even if it’s chocolate. For our last course, we each get a different dessert — Joann a pistachio and chocolate semifreddo, Keith a lavender honey spice cake with sweet potato gelato and me a Tyrolean carrot and poppyseed cake with an olive oil drizzle and orange gelato. I may be a little biased, I think mine is the best.

Oven-Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Balsamic Vinegar, Pine Nuts + Parmesan
Makes three portions

2 ½ cups Brussels sprouts, cut in half lengthwise
3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
6 tablespoons olive oil
Salt and pepper
¼ cup pine nuts
¼ cup Parmesan cheese, grated

Preheat the oven to 425°. Toss the sprouts in a bowl with the vinegar, olive oil, salt and pepper until well coated. Line a roasting pan with tin foil, then arrange the sprouts in a single layer across the bottom of the pan. Roast for twenty to thirty minutes, or until the sprouts brown.

While the sprouts are in the oven, toast the pine nuts in a dry skillet over medium heat, three to five minutes, stirring often.

Remove from the sprouts from the oven and transfer to a serving dish. Mix with pine nuts and Parmesan, season to taste with salt and pepper and serve immediately.

As I was spreading this honey from a local farm on this delicious cranberry orange bread for lunch, I remembered that my Mom wondered out loud this weekend if I have quit blogging. I’ll share more about why I’ve been on blogger’s sabbatical later. Today, let’s talk honey.

Local honey, actually. Local honey and curing seasonal allergies.

Since I was pretty young, I’ve suffered from all kinds of no-fun symptoms from allergies every spring and fall. I’ve tried dozens of different medications, with varying results. Then, a couple years ago, I heard somewhere about honey as the cure-all. Eating honey that was made (by the bees) near your home can all but cure your seasonal allergies, or so the story goes. The story came from a guy selling honey raised close to my home, so I was a bit skeptical. But somehow it made some sense–after all, bees make that stuff from pollen, and pollen (for me) equals sneezes and watery eyes and chronic sinus infections. So, if I can immunize myself from colds and chicken pox by being exposed to it a little bit over time, then maybe this honey thing could actually work. Besides, I really like honey.

Bottom line: I think it might work. I still have some symptoms, but significantly less often and less harsh. I haven’t change much else I can think of, besides spreading or drizzling that thick sweet stuff on toast and tea and pancakes and all sorts of other corn syrup replacements. Come to think of it, I also started rinsing my sinuses at around the same time–a pretty gross trick my Mom taught me. So, I guess it’s a bad experiment. Bottom line is, as far as seasonal allergies go, I’m feeling pretty great compared to most of my life.

The honey in the picture above is from Grandma Wick’s nephew. I usually get my local honey from my sweet sister, but she must not love me anymore. I’ve also bought it from a nice quiet dude at the Falls Park Farmers Market–he brings some bees with him, and the girls really dig that. His honey is raw, which he tells me makes it super-powered for fighting allergies and a whole list of other ailments. Most recently, I bought a double-quart of local honey from the nearby Mayrose Farm on the silent auction at the St. Pat’s Church Soup and Pie lunch on Sunday. This whole story began there, at said Soup and Pie extravaganza, where Anne and Grandma and I talked a little honey and allergies over a bowl of chicken noodle soup.

Want more allergy-fighting honey news? Here are a few links–some supporting my theory, others not really buying it (and one warning from Mayo Clinic not to give your baby any honey):

This is a quickie but a goodie. Have you ever eaten at Outback Steakhouse? I haven’t been in a while but used to go with my dad a lot as a teenager. He was good like that- always taking me out for really great meals! When you sit down they bring you a warm loaf of Honey Wheat Bread, and if you’re anything like me, you’ve also asked them to bring the bread with a side of honey butter. The first time I had the honey butter I freaked out- it was so good. And back then I hated honey. Crazy right? (Don’t get me started on all the things I hated way back when that I love now… mustard… honey… chilies… eggplant…)

Anyway, honey butter is perfect spread on warm freshly baked bread but can also be used in tons of other ways. One of my favorite is in baked sweet potatoes. The flavors all mesh together to create a simple masterpiece.

Honey Butter

1/2 stick butter
1 tbsp honey
1 tspn brown sugar
1 pinch cinnamon
1 pinch of salt

1. Mix all ingredients well in a food processor or in a bowl with a fork. Make sure to mix well. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.

2. Chill and serve when needed.

The Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) came to an end Saturday, but unfortunately, there were some shortcomings despite it being called Asia’s best music award event.

The much-anticipated event was held at Jamsil Indoor Stadium, with young fans lined up near the entrances in hopes of catching a glimpse of some of their favorite K-pop singers.

Mnet Media scrapped its 10-year Mnet KM Music Festival (MKMF) in October, announcing that it was bringing an upgraded music event for not only fans in Korea, but throughout Asia as well. While the overall show was entertaining, it failed to truly captivate fans with its results and concept.

The red carpet entrance was a good way to kick off the six-hour event, with female singers donning stylish outfits, mostly in black, some in fur and others in leather.

MAMA offered eight main stages, or “waves,” each with special concepts and performances.

The first wave, “Asian Fever,” featured Drunken Tiger, who later won the Best Male Solo Artist. The award for the Best Female Solo Artist went to Baek Ji-young. The Best New Male Artist went to the Supreme Team, while 2NE1 won the Best New Female Artist, and two other awards eventually, including the Best Music Video and, one of the grand prizes, the Best Song of the Year for “I Don’t Care.”

The second wave, “Girls x Girls,” featured top girl groups the Brown Eyed Girls, which won the Best Female Group and Best House & Electronic awards, and KARA, which won Best Dance.

Seo In-gook, the winner of the Mnet’s popular reality program, “Superstar K,” also performed in the third wave, “Super Stardom,” while the fourth wave, “21st Street,” featured the girl group 2NE1 performing in a short musical skit. The stage was decorated like a small village with shops and a two-story house, which was where Park Bom sang her solo number “You And I.” The musical was lively with the members singing “I Don’t Care,” with a chorus line twist, but the signboards were embarrassing, misspelling a couple of words, including “coffee.”

After former g.o.d. member Kim Tae-woo received the Best Ballad/R&B award, the stage made way for the Best Asian Star, TVXQ. The first official appearance of the three members Xiah, Micky and Hero since the dispute with their agency started surprised fans for two reasons: one was because the group’s agency SM Entertainment boycotted the event citing flaws in the judging system and the second was because they appeared without the other two members. The three members are currently engaged in a legal dispute with SM regarding their contracts and cosmetic business.

“We are very happy as the award was given by our Asian fans. For our fans, and also our two friends who may be watching this somewhere, we would like to say that we love you,” Hero said.

The fifth wave “Free to the Women” brought an exciting lineup of female rappers, while the sixth wave “World of Temptation” captivated fans and singers with a vampire-inspired stage featuring sexy singer Ivy and 2PM’s Nichkhun.

Park Jin-young, the creator of the Wonder Girls, also made a special appearance to receive the Best Asian Composer award.

Big Bang members Tae-yang and G-Dragon rocked the seventh wave, “Korean Dream,” dressed in black and white with impressive dance moves. The last wave was a tribute to veteran singer Sim Soo-bong, who was the first singer to make it to the MAMA Hall of Fame. Singers Kim Tae-woo, Epik High and Seo In-young sang some of Sim’s best songs, while all the singers came on stage to congratulate the singer.

Along with 2NE1’s win for Song of the Year, the other two grand prizes went to G-Dragon for Album of the Year and 2PM for Artist of the Year.

“Thank you, Jae-beom. I know you’re watching. We love you,” Chan-sung said in tears, referring to the group’s leader who left the group after being criticized for his comments he made of Korea when he was a trainee. Fans also expressed their excitement and sorrow by screaming out Jae-beom and the group’s name.

The event ended with Tiger JK from Drunken Tiger promising a bigger event next year and, indeed, MAMA needs improvements to live up to expectations.

The event did surprise fans with congratulatory messages from famous singers, including Janet Jackson, Lady Gaga, the Black Eyed Peas and even Nicole Scherzinger from the Pussycat Dolls.

However, despite the title, there was nothing Asian about MAMA. No Asian singers other than ones from Korea were nominated in even one of the main 19 categories, nor were there any foreign artists performing on the local stage, except for two short performances by Asian Recommended winners Bang Bang Tang from China, which was carried out in Chinese with no subtitles, and Japanese group AKB 48 in Japan.

Along with frequent camera mistakes, the event did not include some of the most popular groups, including Girls’ Generation and Super Junior, while famous trot singers such as Jang Yoon-jeong and Park Hyun-bin also boycotted the event, questioning the fairness in selecting candidates for the newly established Best Trot award.

The launch of the new event this year seemed like a teaser trailer, full of catchy acts and sequences, minus some key players and reasonable ratings. According to Mnet Media, MAMA will be held in different regions in Asia next year. Perhaps this will help the event live up to expectations as Asia’s best music awards, but for now, it has a long way to go.

So all of my recipes on here so far have been recipes that I love and are tried and true classics or are new recipes that I am in love with. This one though I was not in love with. The pears are good, but they are not great. But it has a really high rating on epicurious, so who knows, maybe it is me.

If I make this again, I would definitely double, even triple the recipe. It is a lot of work for just two servings. I didn’t read the recipe carefully before I started, so I only marinated the pears for 2 hours or so. I also don’t think I boiled the syrup down enough, it wasn’t very syrupy. (Maybe that is why I didn’t love the recipe – I didn’t quite follow the directions!) The alcohol in the mascarpone was pretty strong – I loved it, but you could substitute vanilla for the extra kick without the boozy taste.

Adapted from Gourmet, February 1999

Serves 2

Ingredients
2 firm but ripe large Bosc pears, peeled, halved, cored
Juice of half a lemon
1 cup water
1/2 cup dry white wine
6 tablespoons honey
1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise
1/2 cup mascarpone cheese
2 teaspoons sugar
2 teaspoons brandy or dark rum

Peel, core and half pears. Squeeze lemon over pears and toss to coat with juice in a medium bowl. Set aside.

Combine 1 cup water, wine and honey in medium saucepan. (Spray spoon with Pam/canola spray so that honey does not stick to it). Scrape in seeds from vanilla bean and toss in pod. Stir over medium heat until honey dissolves. Add pears. Reduce heat to medium/low. Cook pears until tender when pierced, turning, about 15 minutes.

Using slotted spoon, transfer pears to large bowl. Boil poaching liquid until reduced to 3/4 cup and it has become syrup-y and thicker. Cool syrup. Pour syrup over pears. Cover and refrigerate until cold, at least 8 hours or overnight. (Or in my case, two hours).

Beat mascarpone cheese, sugar and brandy in large bowl until smooth. Add 1/4 cup chilled poaching syrup and whisk until soft peaks form. (I could not get peaks for form, but the mascarpone did get nice and thick).

Thinly slice each pear half lengthwise. Using slotted spoon, transfer pears to plates. Gently press on pears to fan slightly. Spoon a bit of syrup over pears. Dollop mascarpone cream alongside each pear half and serve.
