Good morning internet!

Today was my last training run before the big half-marathon on Thursday. I got up early enough to actually spend some time stretching and really waking up before heading out on the road this morning.

And it was a beautiful morning for running. The air was clear and the temperature was in the low 60’s. I decided to slow down the pace that I’ve been running at the past few times out. I know that there is no way that I can maintain a 9:15 pace for the entire 13.1 miles, so I decided to pace myself down a little bit in preparation for Thursday.

The result was and easy and enjoyable 3.1 miles this morning. I finished in 30:16, which is a 9:43 pace. That pace was easy and I felt could be sustainable for a long run. At that pace, I’d finish the 1/2 Marathon in about 2:07-2:08. My average pace for longer distances has been in the 10:30 range. At that pace, my time would be 2:17:33. I think given those conditions, I would like to set the reasonable goal of finishing my first half-marathon in under 2:20, but feel that it is a possibility to do it in under 2:10.

Slight non sequitur, I know that carbo-loading does not happen until the night before, but this looked too good in the office today, and I feel good about where I am at training-wise and physically as well. And let me tell you, it was delicious (worth the calories!)

Tomorrow is a rest day and Thursday is the big day. I plan to update multiple times tomorrow and Thursday, so stay tuned!

Every single week I find a handful new pop songs that both excite and delight my ears. But for every new song I like, there’s unfortunately at least three that I don’t, and some of those stinkers become quite popular and really very annoying over time. Here’s my list of the forty worst offenders of the decade. So as not to drive myself too crazy, I restricted the list to songs that made the top 40 on Billboard’s Hot 100 (which is not the same as the airplay chart, but which is easier to find by lazily browsing Wikipedia.) I also limited the list to one song per artist, because really, is there any point in weighing the cons and cons of each 3 Doors Down hit? No.

So, without further ado, part 3A of the list. For readability I’m breaking this quarter of this list into two. The higher up we’re getting, the more we’re getting to the songs I really truly despise, and when talking about some of them it’s hard to keep the word count down.

20. Michelle Branch, Are You Happy Now? (2003, #16)

This was a bad decade to be a female musician, particularly the kind of female musician that writer her own songs and plays guitar. The Lilith Fair burned a lot of people out on the genre tha was in retrospect pretty offensively termed chick rock, meaning a lot of outlets for female rockers were shut off once the backlast started. (The Fair was also a lot more diverse than many remember: Erykah Badu, Sinead O’Connor, the Cowboy Junkies and Liz Phair all played dates on the ‘98 tour, for instance.)

But the new millennium swept all that away, and the only female singer-songwriters left for a while were new faces that were very bad at rocking: Michelle Branch and Vanessa Carlton and Avril Lavigne and the thankfully-forgotten Amy Studt, all of whom sang tedious songs in the same torturous style that was devoid of life or charm.

Branch was the first and most popular with adult alternative audiences, who respond particularly well to crap. But after this Alanis-lite song was released as the lead single from Branch’s second album people began to move on. After this stinker she’d only have one more charting single, the completely forgettable #36 hit Breathe.

19. Katy Perry, I Kissed A Girl (2008, #1)
I don’t mind lesbianism. I don’t even mind the porny kind of lesbianism that’s only designed to get boys hot and bothered. I don’t mind Gary Glitter-inspired beats, and I certainly don’t mind female pop singers who try to defy convention.

What I do mind are vocal performances where every single note sounds completely unrelated to the notes coming before and after them. I Kissed A Girl is a pop version of Frankenstein’s monster, with each syllable seemingly stitched together separately from the worst of twenty or thirty possible takes. (Try singing along and matching her notes; it’s not easy!) If she were just a bad singer that would be one thing, but this is also quite possibly the most heavily-produced pop hit of the decade. It makes no sense!

Of course, it also doesn’t help that Perry is a completely annoying person who comes off like a tool in interviews, makes horrible faces all the time and sounds just as bad on her other hits, including the decently-written but intensely headache-inducing Waking Up In Vegas.

18. Artists Against AIDS Worldwide/All Star Tribute, What’s Going On? (2001, ?)

There are so many things that can go wrong with a charity record. We Are The World, the mother of them all, meant well and raised a lot of money for famine relief, but it’s also a very taxing song to listen to. Do They Know It’s Christmas meant well, too, but it begged a question best left unanswered. And don’t even get me started on Gulf War 1.0 anthem Voices That Care, which presumably also meant well but which featured Celine Dion, Kenny G, Will Smith and Nelson.

But I feel like What’s Going On, an unholy recreation of the much-beloved Marvin Gaye song, possibly didn’t even mean well. And I don’t mean for listeners, who struggled to keep up as co-producers Bono and Jermaine Dupri struggled to incorporate Ja Rule, Nelly Furtado, Michael Stipe, *Nsync and Fred Durst into the same song. (Their method: everybody emotes heavily in their signature style for half a line each, except for some of the rappers who probably wouldn’t be recognizable if they were just singing; they get longer bits.)

But even in terms of charitable intent this song’s kind of dodgy. Originally intended as a benefit for Artists Against AIDS Worldwide, the song’s was recorded less than a week before 9/11, so at the last minute tplans were changed and only half the money went towards AIDS research. The Red Cross got the other half. So as not to offend the large chunk of Americans who like America but don’t like people with AIDS, the name of the project was changed from Artists Against AIDS Worldwide to the more generic All-Star Tribute, and the song’s video—showing artists like the Backstreet Boys and Nas joylessly recording the song together—included interspersed and extremely unrelated footage of Rudy Giuliani wandering around Ground Zero.

Despite the fact that this song doesn’t feature Peter Cetera or Nelson, it’s still the most offensively awful charity record ever. And six months after its release, Pulp would say all that really needed to be said about the concept.

17. Kings of Leon, Use Somebody (2009, #4)
Remember just a year or two ago, when Kings of Leon were kind of a joke American music writers had about how lame the British could be sometimes? Though they originated in Tennessee, the band of dullards has had nine top 40 hits in the UK now, whereas in the US nobody ever gave a rat’s ass about them until this stupid song came out and proceeded to terrorize rock and pop radio for the past thirty-nine weeks (and counting!) Theoretically “indie”, this group of brothers sounds like a band that couldn’t decide whether to be sanctimonious like Creed or sanctimonious like U2, so instead aimed for the worst parts of both. It also doesn’t help that smug singer Caleb Followill sounds like the bastard spawn of Ray Lamontagne and early Chris Martin, only more incapacitatedly drunk.

16. Hoobastank, The Reason (2004, #2)
According to Wikipedia, Hoobastank singer Doug Robb said the band’s name comes from the name of a gas station in Germany. Also according to Wikipedia, Hoobastank singer Doug Robb said the band’s name was an inside joke and had no particular meaning. Additionally, according to Wikipedia, Hoobastank’s name was originally Hoobustank.

That is all the research and discussion Hoobastank warrants. Let us move on.

Song: The Reason ~Hoobastank Quote: “Have you learned the lessons only of those who admired yo

Song: The Reason ~Hoobastank

Quote: “Have you learned the lessons only of those who admired you, and were tender with you, and stood aside for you? Have you not learned great lessons from those who braced themselves against you; and disputed passage with you.” ~Walt Whitman~

Philosophy: I would prefer to be single wishing I was in a relationship, then to be in a relationship wishing I was single.

I can remember exactly where I was the first time this song found its way into my life. In 2001 I met the first man I can honestly say I loved. His name was Jason, and he was a gentle, kind man who lived a simple life which I enjoyed. I at first found comfort in him, a big bear of a man who wanted to take care of me. We found very quickly that we came from a similar upbringing, meaning it wasn’t the best. I thought at that time we were meant to go out and forge our own life in the world together.

We moved in together right way, probably too soon for most people, but we were young and in love and much to stubborn to listen to our families. Our relationship hit the rocks before the 6 month mark hit. I struggled a lot back then, with my self-image, my self-worth and my past haunted me. That didn’t help us, I see that now.

Jason and I fought, quite a bit, over whether or not I should go to school, whether or not I should change my appearance. We couldn’t agree on money, let alone talk about it, and quickly I found myself resenting him for these things. His family hated me, I tend to be outspoken especially when it’s a matter of respect, at the time I felt as though every word and action from his family was meant as a sign of disrespect towards me. His father and brother most especially disliked me and where I wanted to see Jason and I end up.

When I broke up with him it tore my heart a part. I didn’t know how to say that I loved him, but could not live with him. When I went back to get my things to find him on the couch sobbing it took all that I had to stand my ground. I will never forget that day, the hurt I caused him, the pain that came with walking away. “I’m sorry that I hurt you, it’s something I must live with everyday.” the sound of his sobbing haunted me, for days, and many nights. It came to a point I had to move out of the basement suite we shared, leaving the best landlord I had ever been blessed with.

“I’m not a perfect person, there’s many things I wish I didn’t do.” This song became my mantra, I remember driving out towards Mission with this song playing over and over again on my mp3 player. The words have since that day been engrained in my soul. I loved this man, with all of my heart at this point in my life, but I could not live his life with him. At that time I wasn’t in the place to be in a relationship at all, how can you expect someone to love you, when you can’t even love yourself.

The line that spoke to me the most was, “I’ve found a reason for me to change who I used to be, a reason to start over new and the reason is you.” Jason was my reason for evaluating my life, my reason for saying that I would prefer to be single wishing I was in a relationship, then in a relationship wishing I was single. He became the representation of everything I wanted to distance myself from, everything I one day wanted to have. In the end as harsh as it seems I found I missed the idea of him, much more than I missed him. If that’s not a sign that I made the right choice, I don’t know what is.

“I’ve found a reason to show a side of me you didn’t know.” This is one of 10 significant moments in my life, a defining moment if you will. When I was with Jason, I was trying to be what he wanted from me, and not who I wanted to be, and in my eyes settling is the worst crime you can commit against yourself. After this relationship my entire life changed. I went from being my meek and mild self to a fiercely independent woman of her own world. I changed jobs, my appearance, moved and rethought my entire outlook on life. He became the symbol of this transformation for me. I can honestly say without regret, that I made the right choice, I could never have been happy with him. However I wish that it could have happened differently, that I could have caused him less hurt than I did, I can only hope now, that I helped him as he helped me.

One thing I can say about myself is that when I make a decision, I follow through. It was a Saturday night at 11pm that I decided we needed to go our separate ways. The next morning I cried my way through church and broke up with Jason by 10:50am that day. I cannot abide a person who can remain in a relationship that they know cannot go any further. Those people who can string someone along until they find another person to fill that void, are an enigma to me. Actions like that end up causing more stress and hurt in the long run. I’ve learned over time that learning to be alone was critical for me, I spent a lot of time learning about myself before I could say I was honestly ready for a relationship.

I learned more about relationships and myself with this one man, than with all the others combined. I defined the “requirements” for potential boyfriends based on the aspects of our relationship that worked and what didn’t work. It taught me that in relationships, your parents cannot drive your decision-making, and you cannot take it upon yourself to make your family happy. All that you can do is strive to make yourself happy, live your life in a way that will allow you to succeed, and the rest should fall into place.

The moral of the story? Don’t settle for something because it’s comfortable, because you don’t want to be alone. Learn from your mistakes, your bad relationships and your set backs. Remember that life’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey, and sometimes it takes a bad storm to help you see the landscape with a fresh new set of eyes.

Today was probably a very important day for my Running Journal, and half-marathon preparation. It s

Today was probably a very important day for my Running Journal, and half-marathon preparation. It started when I awoke at 4:50 A.M. to howling winds and the sounds of rain. I hate running in the rain, and I was just about set to call off the morning run as a result.

A quick peek outside the window – it doesn’t look like it’s raining. But it sure does look like it could! So I fired up the computer to check the weather. The local radar showed all green. Well that does it! Who wants to go out and get caught in the rain? But, knowing I had you, faithful reader, to account to, and now less than two months until the half-marathon, I decided to check and see if there was any rain in the actual forecast. Turns out, it was just very overcast. No threat of rain. So I laced ‘em up and got on the road.

And of course, that was the right decision. I ran a little slower, intentionally, today in an effort to keep my heart rate in a better place. It worked out well, as I kept it in the zone between 140 and 150 for the entire run. So my time and pace was a little off today, but it is probably more realistic as to what I can expect as these mileage totals get closer and closer to 13.1 miles.

Many of you have told me that finishing is the number one goal. I agree with that, but I’d like to add an asterisk that I’d like to finish without walking. That means keeping my heart rate in check, and really working on conditioning. I think today was progress toward that goal, even if it was a step backward in time.

Weight was better today, which was to be expected. Mondays are good for getting rid of the weekend junk, and between protein shakes for breakfast and lunch, and a salad for dinner, I definitely got back on track.

That’s all I have for today. Now on to the vital statistics:

The Nice Guy and I are waiting for the train at the Lawrence stop on the Red Line. In our field of vision is the Aragon Ballroom.

The Aragon is this: a massive music venue decorated as if it was once a Medieval Times, and for all I know, it was. VIP seating is in castle turrets, and a dragon is painted on the ceiling, breathing fire across the moon.

We just left the Aragon, following a sold-out rock concert. Nothing is more exhilarating than stepping into the city after a rock show. The open space and the cool breeze on sweat-soaked skin. Cigarettes never smell better.

I look to see if there is anyone I recognize. There is one girl. I distinctly remember her as the less attractive of two girls that My Hairy Friend and I once attempted to flirt with during a night-time screening of Kenneth Branaugh’s Henry V, being shown for a Shakespeare class I was taking. My Hairy Friend was there because I told him there were more cute girls in Intro to Shakespeare than there were in our dorm. This was true. It also wasn’t saying much.

I don’t remember her name. I’m sure she doesn’t remember mine. She is there with another girl, and a gawky, lanky kid. I turn back to look at the buzzing, hazy mass in front of the Aragon. A few feet below me, a mouse weaves between pieces of train-track. I hope he doesn’t fall.

The Nice Guy and I lean against a beam, and I notice what could only be a mother-daughter pair, sitting in silence on the bench next to us. The daughter has the mother’s face. That is, she has her mother’s nose and dull eyes. But that is all of her mother that she has.

They both stare into space.

The mother is dressed in the height of fashion. The bottoms of dark-wash skinny jeans brush the tops of golden flats, and she is wearing a shimmery-blue blouse that I have seen The Righteous One wear, so I know it’s “in.”

The mother is rail thin. Which is also“in.” I think of The Nice Guy’s running joke – that he likes his girls with eating disorders. He’s told this joke so many times that I now know he’s not joking.

Her daughter is not fat. She is tall. And she is, as My Good Friend would describe, “healthy,” meaning she has some meat on her bones. She clearly takes after her father, who probably has soft, simple features. Her fashion sense is confused, and is not designed to fit her body-type. I have a thing for older women, yes, but this is definitely a case of Stacy’s Mom.

Stacy’s Mom sees me looking at her and she smiles. Her eyes are still dull. I look for the mouse again.

Things have to suck for Stacy, whose mother doesn’t know her own age, and is, admittedly, more attractive than her daughter. I feel bad for checking out her mother, not because she is 45, but because I feel like I’m slighting Stacy by doing so.

The pair doesn’t turn their heads, they don’t even seem to be watching the crowd outside the Aragon. They both just stare straight ahead. They look unhappy.

I’ve never had to deal with a parent like Stacy’s Mom. My parents have never been fashion conscious. If you see a guy riding around on a big, black motorcycle in white Keds and a tie-dyed t-shirt in Southern Minnesota, it’s probably The Old Man.

Stacy and Her Mom look a bit sweaty and bedraggled, which means they probably came from the concert. I haven’t had to go through THAT since the eighth grade, when The Old Man followed my friends and me to a Hoobastank/Lost Prophets show to make sure we behaved ourselves.

The train comes, and I keep an eye on the girl from Intro to Shakespeare, hoping her name might come to me. It doesn’t. Even if it did, the train is not the place to reintroduce yourself to anybody, unless that somebody is sitting right next to you. If they are across the train from you, that requires you to stand up, gain your sea-legs, and march on over to where they are sitting, only to go stumbling from side-to-side as the train reaches another stop.

Stacy stands on one side of the car, Stacy’s Mom stands on another. They both sullenly look out the windows they are next to, and the affect is that of a poorly designed album cover.

I watch as a young guy, standing nearer to Stacy’s Mom than to Stacy, shuffles over to Stacy and introduces himself. He doesn’t stumble. Former Navy? I can’t hear what he’s saying, but Stacy smiles. His fashion sense is also confused. He wears an Alkaline Trio t-shirt. Stacy points to it and makes it a point of conversation. She’s still smiling.

When the young guy leaves, Stacy’s Mom grabs Stacy’s arm and pulls her over, and they begin to talk animatedly, presumably about the Guy with the Sea Legs. When they get off, at Granville, their eyes are sparkling, and they’re holding hands. I assume this will probably last until another young asshole checks out Stacy’s Mom.

Here I go, again…! Guys, It’s time for yet another edition of the Worst band names. Perh

Here I go, again…!

Guys, It’s time for yet another edition of the Worst band names. Perhaps I should call it, Sick band names! Lol.
So, without much talking, let’s get down to business.

1. Hoobastank

Sigh. What does this mean dude? I’ve searched for this word’s meaning in sooo many places! You tell me, doesn’t sound weird?
The band name should be comprehensible.
In an interview, here’s what the band’s vocalist, Doug Robb, had to say about the name: “It’s really cool, it’s one of those old high school inside-joke words that didn’t really mean anything.”

2. Matchbox 20

Band names should never contain numbers. Never! Never!
If they’re doing a live show, they’ll go like, “We’re matchbox 20, are you ready to rock!?” Lol. Are they selling a household cleanser!?
It’s ridiculous!

3. Sevendust

Oh! This band probably consists of guys with great brains. They’ve counted number of dust particles.. But I don’t know where..!

4. Smashing Pumpkins

Even the band thinks Smashing Pumpkins “is a stupid name, a dumb bad joke and a bad idea,” which should tell you something. None of their songs talk about smashing Pumpkins. It’s only our brains which will probably be smashed after listening to their songs!

5. Puddle of Mudd

This band name would actually work perfectly as the name for a bohemian coffee shop where a girl in an orange tank top with a brown bandana on her head asks if you want an organic wheat muffin.(You’ll understand this only if you know about Bohemian music!)

6. Goo Goo Dolls

The band found the name in an issue of True Detective Magazine after a club owner balked at their original name, the Sex Maggots. Not only does the name sound like something an infant would gargle while bursting forth out of the birth canal, it doesn’t come anywhere near to complimenting the band’s sound (neither does the Sex Maggots, for that matter).
Their music is Nice. Name Sucks!

7. The The

The band leader probably became dumb just before he could give a full proper name. It’s also not terribly smart to choose a name guaranteed to make it impossible for people to Google you.

8. Chumbawamba

A group of British “anarchists” with strong political opinions needed a band name that resonated with the passion of their views, and so picked a gibberish word that means nothing. Rage against the Machine would make a better name!

9. Wolves in the Throne Room

Does this name make any sense? I couldn’t even make out what they were singing, in their couple of songs. This band is a perfect recipe for a Trauma. The name and their music send you directly to hell!

10. Sick Puppies

Maybe their pet dog falls ill very often. But it definitely is not a name given to a band.! The girl is very Hot!

P.S. – My pal Varun once was talking about Bands with worst names. That gave me the idea to write this topic!
I will keep writing here whenever I find some bands!

Pieces by Hoobastank – This song just makes me want to jump up and down. Have I mentioned that I’m 40 and about as close to a soccer mom as you can get without actually having a child who plays soccer? I can’t help myself, I become a spring every time I see them perform this in concert. It’s also on my Walking Playlist and I’m able to up my speed on the treadmill as soon as I hear the opening. I love the effects pedal that Dan Estrin uses at the beginning. I wish there was a way to type the sound he makes… “Suffocating, sinking further almost every day. Barely treading water, knowing I will not give up, I will not give up. I will not give up.”

(FYI – there was no official video for this song but found a nicely edited one set to Anime.)

I’m not a perfect person
There’s many things I wish I didn’t do
But I continue learning
I never meant to do those things to you
And so I have to say before I go
That I just wnat you to know

I found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
And the reason is you

I’m sorry that I hurt you
It’s something I must live with every day
And all the pain I put you through
I wish that I could take it all away
And be the one who catches all your tears
That’s I need you to hear

I found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
And the reason is you [4x]

I’m not a perfect person

Australia`s best female voice is back! Vanessa Amorosi (28) releases her new single “This Is W

Australia`s best female voice is back! Vanessa Amorosi (28) releases her new single “This Is Who I Am” in Australia in October and her fifth studio album will follow in November 2009.

Vanessa got worldwide interest when she was performing at the opening and closing ceremony at the Olympic games in Australia in the year 2000. Her song “Absolutely Everybody” was not only a smash hit in Australia, but in several european countries as well. Besides Australia, she achieved her biggest success in Germany. Last year she released the fantastic album “Somewhere In The Real World” down under with the single hits “Kiss Your Mama”, “Perfect” and “The Simple Things”. The album was a bestseller down under with “Perfect” the most played song on the radio in 2008 and the album is one of the best albums i`ve heard in 2008.

This year, Vanessa released a duet with the american band Hoobastank, called “The Letter”. Her new album was recorded and produced in America and Sweden. First single “This Is Who I Am” is a great rock-pop tune which definately will be another hit for her. The song was produced by MachoPsycho (Pink) and mixed by Chris Lord-Alge (Green Day). It`s time that Vanessa gets what she deserves, worldwide chart success. If you ever have the chance to see Vanessa live in concert, don`t hesitate to go, cos she is a great performer. She will tour Australia together with Rob Thomas in February 2010.

Here you can watch the just released video for “This Is Who I Am”:
