So yes, it is about time that I try new things in life and my friends and I have been talking about

So yes, it is about time that I try new things in life and my friends and I have been talking about going to a hookah place. Well, there is this place in the upper east side in Milwaukee where they really wanted to go, so we decided to go.

The first time that I went, I’ve been there twice now, we got a non-tobacco strawberry. Guys and gals, I could not get circles for the life of me. That was pretty much the whole point of going really, at least for me. Next, my throat really got scratchy after a while and I’m really glad you can get food and drinks there. I love pini colata smoothies. Comes to think of it, the best one I’ve had so far was in this restaurant in WI Dells just a few weeks before. This hookah experiance was ok, nothing too special, just a few guys having fun.

The second time I went I took my girlfriend with. She does not smoke, or touch tobacco. I got coconut hookah. She hates coconut. Well, as I started smoking, we were talking, and for a reason unknown to me she started asking about it. She caughed up a storm after trying the hookah, but she tried two more times, which I just found really ammuzing. Anyway, we played falling towers near the end, I won even though I may have cheated just a bit, but I didn’t know all the rules, that was my first time playing the game. I did not really like this flavor of hookah, but I can’t say that I will stop going to these. I guess I will visit one occassionally and see what happens.

If you want to go try a cigar, go for it, but hookah, that’s something else. I like it, kind of fun, but it has to be in good company.

Often due to no fault of your own your narghilla bowl may break by some freak force of nature (Ashley Fairfield). In that emergency situation I have come up with a crafty solution to that everyday Aliyah problem. For this you will need some scissors, a 1.5 litre empty plastic bottle, a food/sandwich bag and a rubber band.

Step 1: Cut your water bottle in half, leaving you with the bottom half and your replacement bowl.

Step 2: pull your food bag over the pipe at the bottom end of the narghilla, piercing a hole in the bag. And then stretch that hole around the rubber base of the narghilla.

Here's one I made earlier

Step 3: It should appear now that your narghilla is wearing a cheap dress that is facing upwards. Position the bottom half of your plastic bottle in the same place your narghilla bowl would be, and pull the plastic food bag back over the bottle.

Step 4: Ensure food bag is airtight using rubber band.

Be warned: This is purely a temporary solution and should not be used for long periods of time. Also the plastic bottle will probably struggle to support the weight of the narghilla, so it may require a holder and a smoker.

Realise that if you resort to attempting this solution that you definitely have a smoking problem. Good luck.

Well – In Toronto, there are hooka bars where you “rent” a hooka, and smoke a fruit flavored tobacco smoke puck.

A friend took me to the “Budda Bar”, and we smoked 2 pucks of the canteloupe flavor! It was a small place – full bar, and the lights were low, but complimenting and the music was upbeat – others there were in a good frame of mind. Which, come to think of it… The longer I was there the better I felt! Definetly a europhoric feeling. I would DEFINETLY do that again.

While we were there, a cop pulled someone over right in front of the club… My friend and I were chuckling to ourselves over what would happen if the cop decided to try to bust the place while everyone was smoking… What I would say to my husband should we have ended up in the slammer for the night. “Um, honey? Can you come get me?”… “Where are you?” He says… “Well, um – THE DRUNK TANK!”

This evening I met with my men’s club. Five of us dined at a new restaurant in Orland park cal

This evening I met with my men’s club. Five of us dined at a new restaurant in Orland park called Ottimo. Originally the building was occupied by a mid-eastern restaurant that was quite interesting. We dined there two years ago. First strike against it was that it didn’t serve alcoholic beverages. Not a good thing for my group. Secondly, we felt we were a part of a some terror group. The clientele were mostly Muslims. Women all around us wore head scarves. A group of dark men sat at a round table in the back smoking a hookah. We don’t know what they smoke in one of those things, but suspect it to be something mysterious. The food was mediocre, and the service the same. That’s probably why they are no longer in business. After that evening we vowed never to return.

This evening was another matter. We barely sat down when the waiter brought a loaf of hot bread and a tub of garlic butter as an appetizer. We ordered drinks off an impressive wine list. I started with a Cabernet which arrived quickly. I decided to pass the bread around, and bumped the full glass of red wine over onto the table and my lap. What a mess. Thankfully, Miguel, our waiter was right there and helped clean up the mess quickly. He also followed up with a second glass of wine to replace the one I tipped.

Ottimo offers a special on Tuesdays; spaghetti and meat balls. It comes with a garden salad, and served family style. Three of the group opted for the spaghetti. I chose Chicken Marsala. It came with a rich sauce and smothered in mushrooms. The taste was exquisite. Sherman ordered mussels over linguine. He has a case for overcooked pasta, but noted that the linguine was cooked to perfection; al dente. I ordered some ravioli with ricotta cheese as a take home for Peggy. She also commented on it’s excellence.

We completed the meal and got the check. Most of the time, the longest part our evening belongs to calculating who pays what. This evening was a little strange, in that we were able to make it work in just a few minutes. As we waited for Miguel to pick up the check, we expressed a curiosity as to which part of Italy this style of cooking came from. I hailed the Maitre-’De over to the table and asked. He told us that it was from southern Italy below Napoli. We then quizzed him about which part of Italy he came from. It was like twenty questions as we rattled off town names. He kept answering, “further north.” We ran out of towns and gave up. “Where,” we asked?

“Austria,” he replied. We were in shock. The guy was from Salzburg Austria. He left for a moment and returned with a complimentary after dinner drink of limongello. It was grand.

All in all, we gave this new restaurant five stars. A bit pricey since the menu is a la carte, but well worth the exquisite food.

The Hazards of Shisha The use of “shisha” also known as hookah or water pipe is rapidly increasi

The Hazards of Shisha

The use of “shisha” also known as hookah or water pipe is rapidly increasing in the major cities. Unfortunately most people who use shisha are not aware of its harmful effects. Most restaurant owners tell their customers that it is merely flavored smoke and that there is no tobacco in it.

Recently, however, the World Health Organization (WHO) released a report on the health consequences of shisha use and it has proved to be an eye-opener. A commonly held belief is that shisha is harmless because the smoke first passes through water before it is inhaled. Theshisha smoker may inhale as much smoke during one session as a cigarette smoker would inhale consuming 100 or more cigarettes. Even after it has passed through water, the smoke produced by a shisha contains a high level of toxins, including carbon monoxide, heavy metals and other carcinogens.

A similar hazard is posed to other people who are not directly using shisha by means of passive smoking. It is indeed sad that in spite of an ordinance in place, which bans smoking in public places many restaurants; offer shisha to their customers. Tobacco used in these water pipes is often sweetened and flavored, making it very appealing to children and teenagers. A survey done on youngsters of school-going age in Karachi recently showed that almost 70 per cent had tried shisha in the past six months, and this included children as young as seven.

Many of the commercially available packets, which are used for shisha smoking, have misleading labels such as 0.5 per cent nicotine and zero tar. WHO in its report has strongly recommended that healthcare professionals educate the public about the potential dangers of shisha use. Moreover, the sharing of shisha between people poses an additional risk of TB, herpes, flu, meningitis and hepatitis transmission. I would urge the ministry of health not only to ban shisha use in the restaurants but also to take other practical steps for the full implementation of the “Prohibition of smoking ordinance 2002” in the country.

“Shisha 200 times worse than a cigarette” say Middle East experts

left lung is normal, right lung shows cancer from smoking

Three leading experts from across the Middle East have warned that excluding “shisha bars” when England goes smokefree on July 1 could worsen the grave inequalities in health that already affect ethnic minorities.

Owners of shisha bars and cafes, which provide Arab style waterpipes to customers, are asking to be exempt from the law when it comes into force. However new research suggests that the waterpipes have three additional lethal risks over the risks of smoking cigarettes:

• Flavoured tobacco is smoked over coals and fumes from these fuels add new toxins to the already dangerous smoke.

• Shisha smokers inhale up to 200 times more smoke in a single shisha session that they would from a cigarette.

• Café owners have stress the social importance of their product but researchers say it is exactly that social aspect that results in high levels of highly dangerous secondhand smoke.

Far from discriminating against ethnic minorities, any exemption for indoor shisha smoking would only worsen health inequalities, say experts.Following the recent publication by the American Lung Association “An emerging Deadly Trend: Waterpipe Tobacco Use” (1) Mostafa Mohamed, Professor of Community Medicine in Cairo said, “Heat sources that are commonly used in Shisha pipes to burn the tobacco are likely to increase the health risks because when they burn they produce their own toxins. Shisha smokers and those around them are put at greater risk.”

Professor Mohamed is among the authors of a World Health Organisation report on shisha smoking published in 2005 (2). He was joined in his statement by co contributors from Syria and the Lebanon .

Dr Wasim Maziak, Associate Professor at the University of Memphis USA and Director of the Syrian Center of Tobacco Studies expects to publish new research very soon. The new study stresses that it is the very social nature of shisha smoking that makes the problem worse.

“Our latest study makes clear that that clean air policies should include the waterpipe, as it can be responsible for the build up of toxic levels of indoor air pollutants similar to what is seen in cigarettes. The social nature of this tobacco use method makes such regulations more needed, but perhaps more difficult to implement as well. The public health community in the meantime must wake up to the hazardous nature of this emerging tobacco use method both to users and those exposed.”

A typical hour long shisha session involves inhaling 100 to 200 times the volume of smoke inhaled when smoking a cigarette and there is no proof that any adaptation can make waterpipes safer. Professor Maziak’s latest study provides the first evidence about the potential hazards of exposure to waterpipe-associate d secondhand smoke. Hazardous particles of various sizes can build up gradually during waterpipe use to reach dangerously high levels presenting a risk to non-smokers and particular risk to pregnant women.

Dr Alan Shidaheh of the American University in Beirut suggested that the problem was only recently being addressed by western scientists and that had lead to dangerous misconceptions.

“One of the enduring legacies of colonialism is that many problems of public health which are more relevant to the global South have received scant scientific attention due to a lack of resources available there. Knowledge of the potentially detrimental health consequences of shisha smoke, first or second hand, is a good example. The historical lack of evidence has unfortunately allowed many shisha users to believe that the practice was safe, or at least safer than other forms of tobacco use. We have recently learned otherwise.”

Dr Shidaheh went on to stress that it was not only the shisha smoker who is at risk and warned that the tobacco industry will try to undermine the science, “Every recent study has found that shisha smoke contains large quantities of the chemicals that lead to heart disease, cancer, and addiction in cigarette smokers.”

In their report to the WHO the researchers stressed, “Waterpipes should be subjected to the same regulations as cigarettes and other tobacco products. Waterpipes and waterpipe tobacco should contain health warnings. Claims of harm reduction and safety should be prohibited.”

its been a while since ive had the time to repost especially since last week hit me square in the chest with mid-terms and critiques.

these are from Red Bull Soapbox race (apparently over 80,000 were crammed into dolores park) yet somehow i got a spot right where the action is. At one point, there was a soapbox team that was dressed up as a hamster wheel and they crashed right in front of me! crazy!

Sitting in an internet cafe looking out at the most extraordinary village…. picture fantastical flinstones.. and you’ll start to get the picture. Am in Goreme, Turkey… home of Faerie Chimneys – these are land formations that I can’t even begin to describe. History is admittedly sketchy. Once thought that monks moved in, and lit candles at night.. the villagers then thought the faeries (which seems the same as ‘ghosts’ here) were living in the pillars. In only three days, I’ve seen so much. So great to see my wandering daughter, who has taught me already that we don’t need showers nor clean clothes.. ever. It’s all coming back to me from my backpacking days.

Turkey is much like Iran, so as soon as I hit Istanbul I felt like ‘home’. Huka pipes, chai shops.. the gand bizaar are amazing. Turkey is brighter, more colourful, people so lovely. so far i have stayed in a multimillion dollar mansion (where the dress is currently safely awaitng us), and now in a 8 dollar a night cave. the dress already has it’s own story to tell… dungeons and dragging. okay, I won’t say more incase the bride-to-be discovers this blog. She leaves Canada in a few days, so I’ll be safe to say more than.

i’d type better but I am on a turkish keyboard.. and it’s a touch confusing.

<img class="size-full wp-image-471 " title="cappodocia" src="http://musingalong.wordpress.com/files/2008/11/imgp0793.jpg" alt="Goreme Cappodocia, Turkey.
Megan’s turn on the internet, then we will search out dinner… turkish food very good.

Cappodocia means ‘the land of beautiful horses’ so named when the persians invaded and discovered

<img class="size-full wp-image-470 " title="Meg Istanbul" src="http://musingalong.wordpress.com/files/2008/11/imgp0651.jpg" alt="So good to see my wandering daughter!
extraordinary horses. Also i was in an underground city that goes back 4000 years….. very strange…

Post Trip Addendum: Ha! Did I never write about the first day in Istanbul? Yes, my darling daughter made sure I was immersed… mosques, the grand bazaar where she led me to a piece of jewellery she had discovered much like my Iranian jewellery stolen years ago.. and now, unfortunately worth $1000, a hooka pipe with apple tobacco – hmm – she is just like her papa, thinks there is nothing ‘wrong’ with hooka tobacco!, turkish coffee, lovely turkish lunch, spice bazaar, ‘a cruise’, bahklava.. and the night with her lovely ‘family’!

IT IS SOOOOO AMAZING! Don’t get me wrong.. i love Becca to death, but it’s nice to be able to be my own person and not just her shadow… i went through at least 6 yrs of at least one teacher a year calling me Becca. It’s amazing to be myself.

I’m sunburned BADLY!!!!!!! i put on sunscreen and I’m still a damn lobster… maybe i wont be so white anymore… *ponders the thought* I kinda wanna go to a tanning bed so i can even out my tan and not have tank top lines and pale white legs. Lol.

First game tomorrow… so first performance.. it’s gonna be kinda bad… but at least I’m not alone.

I get to go Hooka tonight!! first time ever… i hope it’s as relaxing as everyone says… i need some relaxation.

Rambling done and I’m out…

Question for the audience…

Through out the United States, the hookah is gaining immense popularity amongst college students. This ancient method of smoking is an activity that keeps young students entertained for hours. Its quite odd that after several hundreds years, the hookah became popular amongst this target market. However, a lot of school officials are concerned that these students are abusing the hookah and do it way too much. The effects of Hookah are yet seen amongst this group but its recommended to smoke in moderation.

unfortunately, ngowned is correct. i will be moving back to the bay area at the end of july. i will be moving to a more chill job so hopefully i can blog with more vigor and frequency.

chill weeeknd for most part. started on wednesday

hooka in LES with BYOB. pretty bomb time. haven smoked in awhile so it was chill. watermelon n some other flavors. good conversation. 2 bottles of wine and a six pack of beerz. cant beat that. i need to hooka more

thurs went to a shitty korean bar. a bar we frequent way too much. i am going to cease to go to that joint from now on.

fri – got kicked out of club and sat was chill with buddy coming from out of town.

sun – got tasty dinner with my buddies at an all-u-can-eat japanese bbq place. swear i gained like 5lbs afterwarsd. also watched hellboy 2 (not great) with buddy of mine n his girlfriend. first time meeting her so it was neat. she didnt say much since shes basically a fob from korea but whatever. sometimes in life u just gota live with it. it was awkward because she kept on laughing at all these random parts in the movie that no one else was.

now to the title of the post. when is it OK to move on after a relationship? buddy of mine n his gf jus ended a ~2 yr relationship. long story short: she moved on with another dude less than one month after. i personally think thats too short of a gap. the worse thing is that she supposedly wanted some free time. which at first was understandable since in my eyes, the two were on the marriage track. (from socal then norcal then ny then back to norcal) what do yall think? from what my friends have told me, this guy is a douchebag too. double ouch. i feel for my friend.

The Fucking Pita Queen/ quasi crazy allergies + hookah = no voice… Catching you up on last wee

The Fucking Pita Queen/ quasi crazy allergies + hookah = no voice…

Catching you up on last weekend in 3 Parts:

I. FRIDAY:

I spent a nice friday night doing whatever the fuck i felt like:

aka- I put on my adorable apron & made Greek Avgolemono Lemon Chicken Soup, fresh Pita bread, & superior, gooey, brownies

During my pita adventures the fire alarm got spastic on me, which resulted in my precariously standing on some stray furniture trying to get to the sucker which was at the very summit of our 12-14+ ft ceiling of our apt, being very frustrated because it didn’t just have a battery you could yank out of it, but some very intense wiring going up into the ceiling that would not let me disconnect it.

The loud angry beeping persisted… resulting in me running around frantically opening all the windows, turing on the ac, & standing on a chair on my tippy-toes waving a plastic tupperware lid beneath the bloody, dangling-by-its-fucking-stubborn-wires-from-the-ceiling, stupid beeping device, trying to get it to stop. & yes it would stop & then pick right up again (you know right when i was handling hot things or flipping a grouping of pittas)… other than the fire alarm it was a really nice evening & eventually I will try to post the recipes on my food blog Blood Orange Chutzpah (which yes i suck at updating)

After all of this hullabaloo i took a bath by candle light, while listening to my all time favorite Yo La Tengo album- …And The The Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out -

& then cut off some of my hair, possibly the least amount of hair (~3/4″) I have ever cut off at one time, mostly due to the fact I still haven’t decided how I want to cut my hair

II. SATURDAY NIGHT

so another weekend, another saturday night out…

my friend, let’s call him ‘Fierro’ (he is also friends with Guy), was having a birthday party so

around 9 or so I biked over, taking a detour along lake shore drive’s bike path to meet someone first. It was so beautiful out, just surprisingly gorgeous & it felt so great riding.

So I get to Fierro’s apt & end up hanging out on his balcony with a group of people chatting, drinking Red Stripe (which is in my top 5 favorite beers… in case you were wondering) & it’s so nice to be able to finally be outside, the winter in Chicago just held on WAY too long. & it gets later & later… & then we head in doors & smoke some Hooka.

This was a mistake.

Because, apparently, I have developed some allergies here in Chicago, or due to Chicago itself… or at least that’s what the doctors think is up since I’m not dangerously symptomatic of anything else currently… & my throat is agitated.

But for some reason I am determined to finally blow smoke rings, I end up smoking a fair amount. [As a side note, it is just ridiculous how many people in Chicago smoke cigarettes... I have a theory about this, like I have a theory that all guys in Chicago turn out to be assholes, but I'll get into that another time.]

We continue to hang out & my friend… ‘Daphne’ & I are talking about how guys suck, popular topic, & there are only 3 girls total remaining at the party by this time, & like still 5+ guys… & Fierro starts to try to defend the male sex, maybe just himself… which leads to me talking to him about Guy (which I debated not doing, but was drunk & decided I needed to talk to someone about him who knew him) & we both determined at the same time that Guy is ‘fragile’ & that I ’should just call him’. Then while poor Daphne was in the bathroom throwing up, Fierro declared to me his interest in her, to which my response was ‘awwhhhhhh! I KNOW, you guys look so cute together’ (I mean seriously, if you saw how he acted around her, you too would know that he liked her… only problem is that she has a boyfriend… who is an ass I might add… or so the grapevine says)

So it was decided that everyone was going to stay the night & there would be pancakes (if we woke Fierro up & bugged him enough in the morning) but being too all allergy like, I couldn’t sleep & bid my adieus.

& it’s

it’s 5:23 am on a sunday morning

& the good people of the world were washing their clothes at the laundromat

&

It’s 49 degrees (wtf chicago) as i peddled home.

it was another nice night.

… except for when I woke up later Sunday & i couldn’t talk/was in massive pain.

III. Guy

so Guy had a said he’d call

…he sent a text message with his number (thanks Technology, that’s really what I was hoping for)

then he had a friend in town (last weekend)

I was going to call him sunday, but i lost my voice

then i didn’t know what to say

then i called & left a message… he left me a message

etc.

Yesterday was another fun event day starting out with cocktails at Banderas; an upscale eatery in Brentwood with a cool bar vibe, live music, and amazing food. The big event of the evening was the 7 Deadly Sins Charity Event benefiting Operation Smile. For those that don’t know, Operation Smile treats children around the world suffering from cleft lips, cleft palates, and other facial deformities. To date they have helped more than 115,000 kids. The Hollywood Hills mansion had an amazing view of the city and was set up with each room featuring a different “sin”. Fire dancers and belly dancers performed through the night, as well as world class DJ’s. Local restaurants sponsored the event, and I tried an amazing Kobe beef slider from STK Steakhouse and a beef skewer from Farmer’s Daughter. After a stop in the hooka lounge, the dance floor and losing my (fake) $500 at craps and roulette, I called it a night. =)

I decided to check out the Shisha Cafe this weekend because I was in the mood for something differen

I decided to check out the Shisha Cafe this weekend because I was in the mood for something different and inexpensive. After looking through the local paper’s top dining picks for Middle Eastern fare, Shisha Cafe fit the bill and was close to where I work. The cafe occupies a small spot at the end of a strip center and has indoor and outdoor seating. Despite its name, however, I am inclined to report that this place is more of a lounge or parlor rather than a cafe, and I will have to respectfully disagree with the Express News’ assessment that the fare is worth investigating.

“Shisha” is the Arabic term for what many know and refer to as a “hooka” pipe. And as the name implies, the focus of the cafe is indeed smoking (“oh, and by the way, we serve food”). Evidence of this fact became more apparent as my family took a seat inside on plastic patio furniture and torn rattan tables. Thank goodness the music is kept at an acceptable level because I can only take so much of watching overly-produced Persian music videos featuring Western looking people singing in Guiness record-breaking tone and voice modulations. Popular American board games await on a shelf at the front counter for patrons to pass their time until the place closes at 4am. Rather than visiting a restaurant, the large bong (oops, I mean water pipe) assortment made it seem like I had entered a reincarnation of a “Magic Habits” head shop sans rock music, glow in the dark posters, and age limit warning signs.

My first disappointment is with the pricing. As usual, I checked out the menu on their website (which is done pretty well, by the way) and was excited to see $2.99 appetizers. I figured we could order several to get a good sample of the fare and still stay within a budget. The actual prices for the appetizers at the cafe were $3.69. I know that sounds petty, but it is almost a 20% difference (substantial). My second disappointment (and more appalling, actually) came just as swiftly when I ordered water. If I wanted water I would have to buy bottled Ozarka (at $0.99 no less). Ridiculous! We’re not in Iraq, for goodness sake. I’m pretty sure they do not have an ice maker, thus necessitating the bottled water. In addition, a can of soda would cost me $1.29. Man, the food better be good.

We ordered two appetizers: the hummus and the fool mudammas. For the uninitiated, hummus is a dip made from mashed chick peas, sesame paste, garlic, olive oil, and lemon juice and is served with pita bread. Made well, hummus is a fantastic dip featuring a smooth texture and garlicky taste. Done poorly and you get Shisha Cafe hummus. It was just plain bland, lacking both garlic and salt. Plus, its difficult to spruce up something you serve on a disposable plastic plate. The fool mudammas was better, but not great. Similar to the hummus, it is made with mashed fava beans and served warm. This version still had a chunky texture that seemed to highlight the beans more and was seasoned well. The only weird thing about it is that it was so oily that it would not stick to the pita. You had to spoon it on and carefully aim for the pie hole. Additionally, it would be nice to be served homemade pita in a Persian restaurant (oh, right, this is a cafe).

We also ordered the Beef and Chicken Shish Kebab sandwiches, both of which come with lettuce, tomato, and pickles (in plastic baskets, thus bolstering my claim that the “cafe” is really no more than a glorified pub with no alcohol). The chicken comes with a creamy garlic sauce (hmm, I seem to have missed that) that added the moisture necessary to prevent the sandwich from being dry. The beef is supposed to be skewered and grilled ground beef with hummus. If this was ground beef then they pressed the heck out of it. The beef was like a dry and chewy piece of cheap steak and the hummus did nothing to soften the blow. Both sandwiches were wrapped in flat bread that was grilled a little too long, resulting in a chewy wrap.

After tax and tip, I spent around $26. Certainly not worth it in my book. I know nothing about what their hookas are like so I can’t comment on them. If you go to Shisha, go there to hang out with friends, not to find good Persian food. But if you are looking for a place to hang out and eat, there are other places that offer much better “pub grub.”

Well, it looks like im headed back to school tommorrow. I hope this next semester ends up as sucessful as my last one. Which reminds me of how I’ve spent my one month break from school doing ABSOLUTELY nothing. The disgust I feel with my own laziness would force me to go to the gym, only I am too lazy to even do that. However, it’s time to just go back to school and do what I do best, procrastinate. It will be all the easier since tow of my main partners in crime are now technically “defunct”. Jorge Jorge is currently in Europe – Rome to be exact, and Mike Brown, well Mike is just chill’axin in Portland Oregon. I guess things could be better but reality will have to take its place and set in come tommorrow morning when I’m back in Queens. Oh well, atleast I got my trusty hookah to take care of me through these bitter times.
