OK, the dust has just about settled on Sunday night and, just like last year, I’m left with mixed emotions.

On the positive side we aimed to put a great, varied bill on in Dundee and we succeeded at that. We’re fairly sure we introduced some people to new bands, so another positive. And the whole thing ran much more smoothly than the De Rosa show last year and the bands seemed happy with the night.

The big minus though was the turn-out. We do feel we made a reasonably effort at getting the word out, yet the number of punters through the door was disappointing. It’s maybe too early to say that you can’t do this sort of thing in Dundee, but particularly on Sunday night I did find it quite dispiriting.

Of course the music was always going to be the saving grace, just like last year.

It seems that everybody loves Panda Su at the moment and quite rightly so. See her live and I can guarantee you will be enchanted. That’s in part down to her easygoing stage presence but obviously a lot to do with the songs.

She didn’t play all the EP on Sunday but instead a couple of songs I don’t think I’d heard before whilst the backing was subtly enhanced from the twice I’d seen her before. It’s worth mentioning our gratitude for Su taking her elevation to show closer in her stride.

Kid Canaveral were everything a guitar pop band should be – boisterous, entertaining, energetic and most of all tuneful. They do come from a line of bands that stretches back as far as the Undertones and the Buzzcocks and if that may seem like high praise then the so far unreleased tunes they played on Sunday (such as ‘Good Morning’) are convincing support for that theory. Because they’re every bit as good as the gems on the singles so far and I can’t wait for the debut LP next year.

It’s fair to say that Saint Jude’s Infirmary hadn’t had the best of weeks. As a consequence Ashley and Mark played as a duo but, despite the circumstances, there was still magic in the air. The interplay of the voices is undoubtedly one of the strengths of the records and without the rhythm section, that strength was highlighted. And yet just the two of them (with vocal support from Andy from Hookers for Jesus) still managed to bring the set to an epic conclusion with an awesome ‘The Church of John Coltrane’.

Openers, the afore-mentioned Hookers, are just Andy on vocals and Graeme on guitar (and bazouki). A couple of numbers were almost John Cooper Clark-esque numbers with lots of words and minimal backing but Graeme’s role builds throughout the set. It’s interesting stuff that makes me want to listen to their demo.

And that’s pretty much it. Obviously we’re very grateful to the bands for playing and putting on such a tremendous show but also to the PA crew who made it all sound great.

Most of all though we’re grateful to our small but perfectly formed audience, not just for turning out on a cold night but for being so respectful and enthusiastic about all the performers. Thanks, everyone.

I am lucky enough to be invited to lots of interesting events from the most rocking concerts to fringe to freak flag waving nights of hedonism. Sometimes, though it may be a bit off topic for me, I am offered a curiosity I just can’t pass up on.

My friend, Harmon Leon, is the brilliant and warped mind behind Strike TV’s Infiltrator and Freedom Haters. As you might remember, I wrote an essay on the Hollywood dream for his book American Dream. I also played his tacky girlfriend in a brilliant Infiltrator piece on gun control which you can read about here.

From time to time Harmon and I will chat about what projects we are working on or events we are covering:

ME: I’m going to interview Wolfmother this weekend. How about you?

HARMON: Oh, I’m going to Vegas to join ‘Hookers for Jesus’ for the weekend.

Say wha? Well, no offense to the Cosmic Egg dudes but that kinda trumps my rock journo dealio. No question.

So when Harmon had to preach to sinners and hand out bibles in casinos with former ladies of the night, I gladly stepped in for him when he couldn’t be in LA for the 2009 PUA World Summit. That’s PUA, as in: Pick Up Artist. A whole hotel convention ball room filled with pick up artists running their ‘game’ on girls and spreading the word on how to land birds. Um, yeah. I have to go.

With Harmon’s best wishes and a little Hooker Jesus prayer, I tarted myself up in my tiger dress and went to the Renaissance hotel.  I thought about this move and knew I had two options. Wear three multi-media Cosby sweaters and glasses and make it easy for them to talk to me as an asexual journalist…or basically go dressed as a blow up doll personified and see if they can contain themselves long enough to make a slimeless impression on the world. Yes, I knew I was throwing myself to the wolves, but it’s what we embedded journalists do. We put ourselves in harms way for the story. I braced myself for the onslaught of Drakkar Noir.

I checked in as Harmon’s replacement – he being a columnist for Penthouse, and whipped out my little flip camera. I was a bit concerned I was going to be shunned – I thought I would be seen as the enemy seeing as I had ovaries and all, but I was greeted with open arms, a gift bag filled with k-y jelly and condoms, and lots of pick up lines. Someone thought their game was going to work and work fast.

I met with the PUA summit founder Vince Kelvin and he introduced me to a few of the speakers, Hypnotica, Speer, Mehow and Sexual Chocolate who all proceeded to tell me that they were NOT like Mystery and the OLD game. That was about trying to trick a woman into bed. Boo to that. The real purpose of this weekend’s conference was to help men become better men so that they could be better for us women.

Wow, that’s like just what I wanted to hear. Because I’d be a bit turned off if they were trying to pick me up or trying to just get me into bed. But I can really get behind a bunch of guys who are trying to improve their lives and be better for me. I guess I had this whole ‘pick up artist’ and ‘game’ scene wrong. Mea culpa.

True, the tables of ‘Cassanova Crew’ tees, Affliction and Ed Hardy clothes racks, and flyers promising to be part of the ‘pussy pounding posse’ didn’t quite match what they were telling me. But when I brought this up to them, I was told that all the merch was just promotional to get the guys in the door. Once the dudes were in the door, that’s when the real healing and transformation began. It was set up that way. For us women. For women all over the world.

It was very educational. From learning about how to loosen a girl up, to discovering that the holy spirit is actually spunk – I can only imagine the knowledge passed on to the guys who went through the whole weekend master class.

I’ve included some clips of my conversations below complete with bits of NLP, subliminal anchoring via touch and speech patterns, and blatant inappropriate flirting. And yes, I did get asked out on a couple dates. They seemed really nice. I think they’d like me even if I was wearing a big ole Cosby sweater. Should I go?

A while back I heard a news program about a group of Las Vegas prostitutes who found salvation through Jesus and went into ministry helping other hookers to do the same. When asked why she felt called into that ministry, one of women said something to the effect of: “I escaped a burning building but others were still trapped. I had to go back and help them out.”

Have you ever been trapped in darkness? I have. It’s a terrible feeling — lost, lonely, condemned, sad, hopeless. And then when I met Jesus, the opposite feelings — found, loved, free, full of joy and hope.

Did you know that the enemy can take us back to those feelings of being trapped in darkness? He can’t take our salvation of course, but he can deceive us. And it’s happening everywhere — we’re just going to church to feel better about ourselves. Because inside we’re as lost as ever before, or at least it feels that way. It’s time to be real with each other and ourselves.
Church isn’t a stage rehearsal for heaven.

Recently in Australia the police have been cracking down on biker gangs and now are being given powers to make it illegal to associate with the likes of these mobs who have been making the streets of Australia unsafe by shooting, stabbing, and rumbling with each other as well as dealing drugs and promoting racism. I am a firm supporter of the Police world wide and I work with police at every opportunity I get because let’s face it, without the police we would have lawlessness and total chaos. In Australia Police Minister Neil Roberts said since the inception of Queensland’s Task Force Hydra in 2007, which focused on biker-related criminal activity, police had made more than 300 arrests and laid 900 charges, including attempted murder, arson, extortion, robbery and drug trafficking.

At the Sydney airport the Comancheros and the Hells Angels got into a shootout right there in front of little children that left a biker dead on the floor. Those poor little kids will have to carry that with them in their memories for the rest of their lives.

Christian biker gangs have been springing up all over the USA as well as Australia and New Zealand claiming to be spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ, by riding with the other outlaw biker gangs. They give away food, do toy runs, and all sorts of stuff in attempt to prove their Christianity.

Although they call themselves ‘Christian Biker Gangs’, they are right there in the mix of things when it comes to criminal activities. For instance there are Christian biker gangs that not only go on rides with the non-Christian gangs, but they race bikes with them, attend their parties, hang out at their clubhouses, and are seen riding down the road with their patch colors right along side of them. Anyone that has ever been to Biker parties knows that they consist of drunkenness, dope, abuse of women and sex orgies.

Some try to make the argument that Jesus hung out with sinners and attended their parties, so they are just doing the same thing Jesus did.

The truth of the matter is that the biker gangs are known criminals and thugs that are guilty of drug trafficking, murder, prostitution, rape, white slavery, as well as ties to known racists and mafia organizations. I can not find in the scriptures where Jesus attended those types of parties and took part in the criminal activities. When Jesus was around sinners they all shut up and listened to Him. This does not seem to be the case as these Christian based biker groups are enjoying the party and are right there in the thick of things where all the crimes are taking place.

In America 150 armed police officers and members of SWAT teams swarmed across Orange County, California arresting 7 so-called ‘Christian bikers’ who are members of the Set Free Soldiers Motorcycle gang who are now being held on conspiracy to commit murder charges with bail set at $1 million each. They were also arrested along with some Hells Angels on drug charges and assault with a deadly weapon.

Founding Set Free Churches Worldwide Pastor Phil Aguilar was one of the SFS bikers arrested in the stabbings of two Hell’s Angels that led to the conspiracy charge. According to the church’s website they “love Jesus and love to ride hard.”

The Word of God says plainly in 2 Corinthians 6: 14-18 “Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever? Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said, ‘I will dwell in them and walk among them; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. Therefore, come out from their midst and be separate,‘ says the Lord. ‘And do not touch what is unclean; And I will welcome you. And I will be a Father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to Me,’ Says the Lord Almighty.”

The word “fellowship” means “joint participation toward a common goal”. Though not a religious word in and of itself, much like other words (church, faith, etc.) it takes on a specifically spiritual meaning when used in the Bible. Not all religious fellowship is pleasing to God. It displeases God when fellowship involves the wrong people (1 Corinthians 5:2), the wrong actions (Acts 15:24) and/or the wrong motives (3 John 9).

I know a girl named Annie in Las Vegas that is a hooker that started an organization called “Hookers For Jesus,” since becoming a Christian. She dresses like a hooker, attends pornography conventions, and hangs out with prostitutes, pimps, drag queens, homosexuals, lesbians, and drug traffickers. Now I know this girl, she has a good heart, she has spent years living in that lifestyle and these people have been the only friends she has ever known. Therefore as a Christian it is only natural for Annie to want to see these people get saved. However she seems to be preaching grace without repentance, or focusing too much on the love and not the judgment of God. Some of these hooker broads are attending church with Annie and then they leave and say “Whoops! I have a client waiting!” Then they are off to do perverted things for money. Now doesn’t that just glorify Jesus? Would Jesus be happy with that?

I understand what it is like to be a sinner. I was the National leader of the Ku Klux Klan in America before becoming born again twenty years ago. I was saying to my friend Jan the other day, “I wonder what would happen if I started an organization called “Klansmen For Jesus” and started hanging out at Klan rallies and meetings with them. What if I took some of my fellow Christians who were also members of the KKK at one time but who are now born again Christians and we began attending Klan meetings and racing cars with them, parting with them, and were seen hanging out with them at their clubhouse? I can picture telling people, “Well we are just there to be a Christian friend to the Klan. Whenever they hang a Black person or rape a Black female, we just stand back and don’t participate in that, but we are there to be their friend and by doing so we hope to ultimately get them to go to church with us and lead them to Christ.”

Uh huh. I would be laughed right out of the ministry and my world wide ministry would cease to exist. So why then is it OK for people to have “Hookers For Jesus,” and “Bikers For Jesus?” What’s next, “Mafia For Jesus?” How about “Drag Queens For Jesus?” Bestiality For Jesus?” How about “Terrorists For Jesus?” “Drug Pushers For Jesus?” Or could there even someday be organizations called “Child Molesters For Jesus,” or “Baby Killing Abortionists For Jesus?”

Witnessing to the ungodly is one thing but hanging out with the ungodly is an entire different matter.

Let’s clean up our act! That old way of life is passed away once we become born again Christians. Anyone who still continues to hang with the trash that they used to hang with while serving Satan has one foot in the world and one foot in the church and they just do not want to let go of those old friends when God’s word specifically states that we are to have no fellowship with them and that old things are passed away and that all things become as new.

That is what Jesus would do because His word says so. That’s the bottom line. If you are not down with that then I got two words for ya:….

I was watching the news this morning when I saw a report on Hookers for Jesus founder marries some guy in a Christian rock band.  Now I really don’t give a shit about Jesus or Christian music but hookers are a different story.  And Hookers for Jesus to me is a compelling story.  I mean, what the fuck does a hooker for Jesus do?  She sure as hell can’t blow you and recite the Ten Commandments at the same time.  My journalistic curiosity got the best of me and I visited their website hoping with all my soul that this organization was out to save the world using the transformative powers of sex.

What a fucking ripoff!  All I got was an aging porn-again ex prostitute who wants to make the world a better place and a donate button.  If I wanted the world to be a better place I would have joined PETA.   It seems that Ms. Lobert wants to stop human trafficking.  That, in and of itself is a noble ideal.  I don’t like the idea of people being sold.  But considering that you are based out of Las Vegas, I am assuming that by stopping human trafficking you really mean passing out Bibles to prostitutes and asking them to stop.

While we are on the subject of Hookers for Jesus, Sarah Palin is back in the news this week.  In a slam against the Obama Administration, the wacky wingnut from Wasilla claims that the government wants to control the people.

“ We need to be aware of the creation of a fearful population, and fearful lawmakers, being led to believe that big government is the answer, to bail out the private sector, because then government gets to get in there and control it,” she said. “And mark my words, this is going to be next, I fear, bail out next debt-ridden states. Then government gets to get in there and control the people.”

Sarah Palin pisses me off everytime she opens her dumbass mouth.  President Obama should declare her an enemy combatant and deport her ass to Canada.  Not that I have anything against Canadians but I hear that they are much more forgiving than us intolerant Americans.  There will be no New World Order Sarah.  But if I had my way Sarah, I’d send you to Las Vegas to pass out Bibles to hookers and ask them to stop.

Guitarist Oz Fox of the reactivated Christian hard rockers Stryper will marry Annie Lobért, a 41-year-old former call girl who founded the international Christian ministry Hookers for Jesus, on June 5 in Las Vegas.

Lobért worked for 11 years as a high-class prostitute and escort in Las Vegas, which included catering to celebrities and professional athletes.

Lobért gives lectures now in both secular and religious communities on the effects of the adult entertainment industry. Ever since John Piper started Christian Hedonism, it seems like everyone desires to come up with a more controversal combination of words.  I believe it is difficult to top “Hookers for Jesus”.  Even “Atheist for Jesus” seems mild in comparison.

Hookers for Jesus?

Somehow I cannot image the PCA church in Las Vegas supporting “Hookers for Jesus”.

I don’t know what to say about this site – Hookers For Jesus.

I am not making this up, there is actually a ministry out there in the evangelical world called “Hookers for Jesus.”  I found out about this ministry when I watched Mark Driscoll debate Deepak Chopra and Bishop Carlton Pearson on Nightline Faceoff.  If you haven’t seen the debate yet follow the link and watch–its worth your time and I think Driscoll did an excellent job defending the faith and exposing the absurdity Chopra’s relativism.  Anyway, Driscoll’s debate partner was a woman named Annie Lobert who is the founder of the Christian Ministry titled “Hookers for Jesus.”

After watching most of the debate, I sense that Lobert is a genuine young woman of the faith and it seems very clear to me that God soveriegnly and powerful intervened in her life to save her from destroying herself through prostitution and reconcile her to Himself.  She seems to have a real and vibrant faith–praise God for the work He has done in her life!

However, I was shocked to read that she is the founder of a ministry called “Hookers for Jesus.”  I must confess that I know very little about the ministry as I was more than a little reticent to type “Hookers for Jesus” into Google to find out more!  So if you know more about this ministry, please feel free to let me know in the comment meta!  While I don’t think that there is much in a name, names are not unimportant–often times they communicate something about our ministries etc.  In this instance I think that is surely the case.  “Hookers for Jesus” sounds like a group of prostitutes who get together and talk about how they prostitute themselves for Jesus.  Let me say that I know that is NOT the case with this ministry because Lobert is a former prostitute.  By the grace of God she is no longer living in that destructive lifestyle!

Like I said, I don’t know much about Lobert’s ministry but from what she said in the debate, I gather that it is aimed at getting the gospel out to prostitutes and seeking to help them out of prostitution and into a saving-relationship with Jesus Christ.  I am all for that.  I think it posts some obvious risks for someone like Lobert, but I respect her heart to get the gospel out to people who are in slavery to sin as she was and I respect her desire to share her powerful testimony.  But let me kindly say that the name of her ministry is poorly titled.

I know what some are going to say–the title is edgy and gets attention and will open doors for ministry . . . there is something in a title, but not that much in a title.  I think the best titles communicate exactly what our ministries are about.  If its a ministry to help women out of prostitution, call it “Helping Women out of Prostitution” or “Taking the Gospel to Prostitutes.”  But “Hookers for Jesus” just sounds terrible and doesn’t communicate what her ministry is really all about.

Furthermore it makes light of a very serious sin issue in our world.  Hooker is  a derogatory slang word for prostitute.  I am not saying that we should dignify prostitution in any way, but I don’t think calling prostitutes “hookers” is appropriate as it makes light of a deeply dark sin issue.  Further, if they really hope to reach prostitutes for Christ, why would they want to use such a derogatory and unseemly word in their title?

I feel the same way about XXXchurch.  I am glad that they are out there and trying to reach people in the pornography industry for  Christ, but what a terrible name!  It sounds like a sacreligious haven of pornography.  Again, the little I know about XXXchurch is that that is NOT what they are all about.  I think they are trying to do a lot of good things for the kingdom, but their title is just bad! Again their title makes light of a very dark and dangerous sin issue.  Especially with their “Jesus Loves Porn Stars” Bibles.  Yes Jesus loves everyone, even people deep in sin (that is everyone apart from Christ by the way), but He is also just and unless such people repent and believe they are going to experience the just and loving discipline of the Lord for all eternity (Matthew 25; Luke 13; 1 Cor. 6:9-10).

Anyway, I would be interested to hear what you think about these ministries.  I think XXXchurch perhaps presents more problems in terms of temptation, especially for the men involved.  That said, on the whole, I appreciate people trying to shed the light of the gospel into such dark places, but these titles are just not helpful!
