I was walking along the beach banks, as I do regularly, and taking some photos. The sun was shining, birds singing, there was a brisk breeze, and the sea was rougher than I’d seen lately. There were lots of waves, foaming, as they crashed upon the pebbled beach. As I walked I thought, the sea changes all the time. It changes colour depending on the skies, blue, grey, something in between. It can be smooth and slow, or crashing, powerful waves.

The landscape changes too. As I walked I noticed more flowers, yellow, purple, than I’d seen last time I’d walked that way. Now there were hundreds of tadpoles in the pond, where before there’d been none. There was a haze over the sea, which is usual around here. I need to write something about the sea for the Tall Tales project. Both Horden and Easington are by the sea, the old mines reaching out under the seabed for a few miles. Now they are gone, and the beaches are cleaner. Where the pits and spoil heaps once stood there are grasslands, nature reclaiming what was once heavy industrial land.

As a child going down to the beach was an adventure, looking for fossils, catching tadpoles in the pond at Denemouth (which has long since dried up and become grass), finding the odd crab. The beach itself was covered in fossils, and the sea coal lorries would move up and down as the men looked for coal washed up on the shore.

Now, as an adult, I walk there for my health, and because I enjoy the natural beauty of the landscape. The dank smell of seaweed, the tang of the sea air, the birdsong, the peacefulness (or not depending on the weather!) and solitude, and the ever present sound of the waves.

I feel lucky to live here, the former colliery villages surrounded by natural beauty and rural landscapes. The weather may not be the best, but it’s what I grew up with and it’s in my blood.

The Dead Woods

It slumbers now, its dark heart nestling
in the Dead Woods north of Horden Hall,
as it has for untold centuries,
a forgotten god in an ancient place.
Unseen tendrils stretch in all directions,
like a monumental spider’s web.
Neither bird nor animal abides there,
the sullen trees a silent grove.
Dark and chilling beneath their roots
lies evil incarnate, in essence and presence.
Yet even as it sleeps it feeds on black emotions,
a leech on anger, despair, depression;
a psychic vampire preying upon the hopeless.
In raptures, the rage of striking miners,
and the aftermath of unemployment
and community destruction called it forth
to feast, its tentacles spread beneath our feet.
Occasionally it awakens
and upon waking calls out for sacrifice,
with rope or gun or knife,
needing to devour the life
of someone in torment,
the cries of the suicidal soul.
It gorges itself at the cemetery to the west,
on grief and tears,
and yet it shies away from playgrounds,
places full of laughter and hope,
anathema to its desires.
It withdraws in agony from love
and joy, music and dance,
from happy times, of awe and wonder.
So arm yourselves with smiles,
reach out a friendly hand
and create here and now a beacon
of light for the world.

The Dead Woods

Easington Writers Group, of which I am a member, has received lottery funding to produce a book of short stories and poetry set in Horden and Easington. We are currently interviewing residents of Easington and Horden about their experiences and lives. We will then produce fictional stories and poetry which may be inspired by some of the information we pick up. No real names will be used in the book, although will acknowledge all those who have helped. If you have any stories of Easington or Horden you think are interesting and don’t mind us using, please get in touch.

This book will not be like others from the area, centred around the coal industry, but aims to be something new and inspiring, perhaps drawing from the past and present, and looking to the future.

Ông John Horden, giám đốc Văn phòng Khoa học và Công nghệ của Nhà Trắng, cho rằng biện pháp gây tranh cãi này được coi là cách cuối cùng để làm nguội bầu khí quyển trái đất. “Đó là giài pháp nên được xem xét, bởi chúng ta không được phép loại trừ bất kỳ giải pháp nào”, Horden nói.

Ông Horden đã trình bày ý tưởng bắn các phân tử sulphur dioxide, nhôm oxide hoặc một số loại hạt nhân tạo lên tầng bình lưu – cách bề mặt trái đất khoảng 50 km. Giới khoa học hy vọng các hạt siêu nhỏ sẽ làm chệch đường đi của tia nắng mặt trời, khiến chúng quay trở lại không gian trước khi bị bầu khí quyển địa cầu hấp thụ.

Tên lửa, máy bay, các loại súng lớn của hải quân và thậm chí cả khinh khí cầu sẽ tham gia vào nỗ lực bắn các hạt nói trên lên trời. Tuy nhiên, ông Horden cũng thừa nhận kế hoạch sẽ gây nên một số tác động phụ và không thể giải quyết toàn bộ các vấn đề phát sinh từ hiệu ứng nhà kính. Nhưng ông khẳng định Mỹ sẽ vẫn phải sử dụng kế hoạch ấy vì tình thế đã trở nên cấp bách.

“Tình hình hiện nay giống như việc chúng ta ngồi trong một chiếc xe hơi với hệ thống phanh tồi và đang lao về một tảng đá trong màn sương mù”, ông ví von.

Những người phản đối Horden cho rằng ý tưởng của ông có thể gây nên những hậu quả nghiêm trọng hơn cả hiệu ứng nhà kính. Tuy nhiên, Horden nhấn mạnh rằng loài người chẳng còn nhiều thời gian, bởi tình trạng ấm lên toàn cầu đang diễn ra với tốc độ nhanh hơn nhiều so với dự đoán của giới khoa học. Ý tưởng của ông đương nhiên không ngăn chặn hoàn toàn hiệu ứng nhà kính, song nó có thể giúp con người có thêm thời gian.

Horden cũng đề xuất ý tưởng chế tạo những “cây nhân tạo” có khả năng hấp thụ carbon dioxide – thủ phạm chính gây biến đổi khí hậu. Việc phát triển cây nhân tạo có thể “ngốn” nhiều tiền của trong giai đoạn đầu, song Horden khẳng định kế hoạch đó hoàn toàn khả thi.

Beide Nederlanders werden zesde in hun serie en dat was niet toereikend voor een plaats in de eindstrijd. Een plaats bij de beste vier was noodzakelijk. Van der Westen was er nog het dichtst bij met een tijd van 13.45. Hij kwam 0,05 tekort. Sedoc liep een tijd van 13.60.

Gregory Sedoc en Marcel van der Westen zijn doorgedrongen tot de halve finales van de 110 meter horden. Sedoc wist zich in de kwartfinales rechtstreeks te plaatsen door een derde plaats in zijn serie. Hij liep een tijd van 13.43, zijn beste tijd dit seizoen. Van der Westen werd in zijn serie vierde, maar zijn tijd van 13.48 was voldoende om zich bij de 4 beste verliezers te scharen. De halve finale staat morgen op het programma.

Marcel van der Westen en Gregory Sedoc hebben zich beide gekwalificeerd voor de kwartfinales van de 110 meter horden. Sedoc werd in zijn serie vierde in een tijd van 13,50. Van der Westen eindigde in een andere serie op de tweede plaats. Hij liep een tijd van 13,52. De Chinese favoriet voor goud Liu Xiang moest tot grote teleurstelling van het publiek afhaken wegens een blessure.

De deelname van hordeloper Marcel van der Westen aan de Olympische Spelen staat op losse schroeven. De atleet brak namelijk woensdagavond in Luzern door een val op de 110 meter horden zijn sleutelbeen. Alleen door een snelle operatie behoudt Van der Westen nog een kans om de Spelen te halen. Hij zal daarom komend weekeinde al onder het mes gaan. De Amsterdammer had zich al verzekerd van een ticket naar Beijing door tijdens de FBK Games in Hengelo de limiet te lopen.
