Get up early and go to the mountain and watch God make a morning. The dull gray will give way as God pushes the sun toward the horizon, and there will be tints and hues of every shade, that will blend into one perfect light as the full-orbed sun burst into view. As the King of day moves forth majestically flooding the earth and every lowly vale, listen to the music of heaven’s choir as it sings of the majesty of God and the glory of the morning.

The clear, pure light of the morning made me long for the truth in my heart, which alone could make me pure and clear as the morning, tune me up to the concept-pitch of the nature around me. And the wind that blew from the sunrise made me hope in the ‘God who had first breathed into my nostrils the breath of life; that He would at length so fill me with His breath, His mind, finding therein my own life, only glorified infinitely. What should we poor humans do without our God’s nights and mornings? George MacDonald

For almost 17 years of my life, I came in first. I had almost everything and I was happy. I didn’t know what it was like to lose and I took first place for granted.

My earth shook when I began coming in second. I was never early. That had always been my so called downfall. Why so called? Because no one gets up quicker than I did even by myself. I hardly realised I fell most times. But when it hit me that I fell, I will be down in total darkness and I will continue staying down until I decided to pick myself up. I am often at this dark place. There’s nothing but a glimmer of light. I guess it’s nature’s way of saying ’sorry for the inconvenience caused’. I used to hate the place, the thought of it, the cause of it. For moments, second was the most horrible place to be.

Until I opened up and broadened my horizon.

From a nightmare, coming in second turned into a dream.

The darkness with glimmer of light became a surrounding of solace. I didn’t mind remaining second. As I will always be in my place. Dropping from first to second wasn’t so bad after all. I adapted to it. I treasured it. I was completely me. It was like another home, where I belonged. For once, there was this place where nothing was ever expected out of me. I was content with the choices life had given. Yes, wrong choices were made but how else will I know what’s behind door number 2 if I didn’t open it?

Like I said, I am never early. When I find things, when I realised things, I am always late or sometimes too late. The phrase ‘better late than never’ barely existed. So sometimes when I opened a door, there’s nothing or no one there. What’s worse is when you find things that aren’t yours or when you find things that someone else had lost. From the day you found it, you already knew it won’t stick. You spent so much time preparing to let it go rather than embracing it while it last. Every now and then a repetitive mistake will be made. Those preparing to let go will always be in mourning and those embracing it will spent their life remembering. Either way, you win just so you can lose.

Being second is exactly like that. You are always giving in to the first and making way for the third. When you’re second you’re in between things or even coming in between things. When you’re second, you stood exactly in the middle of risks and sacrifices, you’re in the middle of right and wrong. It will make you feel out of place for sure, for quite some time. Time and again you’re going to need to get directions. While it wasn’t easy to stay first, it’s a different game altogether being second.

Second is practically a path on it’s own. I’m a rebellious second. I barely follow the lead, barely in the race, hardly looking back or always looking back depending on how paranoid I am capable of being. It was a little of a co-incidence when I opened a fortune cookie which could never be more right for me. It says my great attention to detail will be both a blessing and a curse. That is the exact definition of second.

I do miss being first though. But I am grateful for the lessons second is giving. Then again, if life is a test, I want a cheat sheet.

XOXO

Bioinformatics is a computer intensive field, so it is quite natural to find that experts in this discipline tend to post a lot of useful information on the web. In fact most professors teaching bioinformatics courses, book authors, and creators of important algorithms have extensive web sites filled with tutorials and educational information. The challenge is to locate the resources that you need for your personal education without spending months of your time surfing the web searching for these gems.

There is a clear need for an organized central resource that collects links to bioinformatics training material. The EXOME™- Horizon (EH) is an attempt to fill this need.

EXOME™ Horizon, an enabling service for Bioinformatics is a “Unified bioinformatics Learning Environment” that integrates the tools to learn, appreciate, explore and teach Bioinformatics in an optimal way. It facilitates the understanding of Bioinformatics among researchers and students.

The EXOME™ Horizon is an organized collection of Sequence Analysis tools, Structural Bioinformatics tools & Drug discovery tools, Comprehensive tutorials, In-built databases, On-line references, Sample test datasets, etc. In short everything that interested scientists/student’s need in order to train themselves in the emerging discipline of bioinformatics

EXOME™ Horizon is a service offering that consists of Sequence Analysis, structural bioinformatics and Drug Designing modules. EXOME™ Horizon uses workflow model through which a user can effectively and efficiently comprehend the procedural steps of sequence analysis, structure analysis and drug designing.

Listed below are just some of the areas in which training is conducted using EXOME™ Horizon:

* Genomics -Sequence/Structure Annotation, Phylogenetic Analysis, SNP Analysis, Genomics/Comparative
* Proteomics – Structural Bioinformatics, Protein Modeling and Simulations
* Cheminformatics -Pharmacophore/QSAR Modeling, Combinatorial Library design, Molecular Dockings, Structure Based Drug Designing, Toxicity Modeling and Prediction, Chemical Databases

Some of the salient features of EXOME™ Horizon other than the one mentioned above are as follows:

1. Client server architecture minimizes the cost per user.
2. Minimizes the hard ware requirement to a Server
3. User specific & secure work space
4. Comprehensive help menus for self learning
5. Limiting the use of internet bandwidth with inbuilt data bases- Nucleotide, PDB, PDBQ etc.
6. Interactive GUI removes the pain to learn and write commands to run an application.

Easy to understand the results/output through graphical representation and saves valuable time in understanding the application specific output

Dawn in the woods (see the lake? anyone see the lake?)

Tonight I am going to come clean. Admit a huge psychological problem. Time to tell you the ugly truth.

And the reason I can share this truth with you tonight is: I am almost cured.

Almost.

But it’s been a long haul, a long road.

Our road. (Anyone see the lake? Do you see it?)

Imagine yourself moving to your Little House in the Big Woods. (I am suddenly fascinated with the parallels between this life and the Laura Wilder Ingall’s Little House on the Prairie books that I read to my children before they could toddle. Well before they started kindergarten anyway.) Imagine yourself building an idyllic little cabin in the woods and raising children who ran wild and free building forts and playing amidst the trees.

Really imagine what this feels like. You are surrounded by trees. Trees everywhere. Trees to the left, trees to the right, trees behind you, trees in front of you. You carve out a space for a house and perhaps garage and lawn, but you’re in the forest.

What does this mean? It means there is no visible horizon. You cannot see the sun set or rise, except through the blanket of tree branches. You are always surrounded. Your sight can no longer stretch infinitely to the north or west or east or south. It stops. It stops when it meets trees.

And you have to learn to live in this forest-world, without the gift of a horizon.

Trees sweeping upward into the sky

So I must tell you the ugly secret. For much of my life here in the wood I have experienced horizon envy. Envy of those who have a horizon. Yes. It was quite painful. In the early years I begged my forest-loving husband “Please can we move down by the water? I must have a view! I must have a horizon!” But my pleas fell on deaf ears. He loved the woods. He couldn’t imagine what his crazy wife was talking about. And I certainly couldn’t articulate about horizon envy.

Sunset in a mud puddle (this is as good as it gets!)

The years passed. I scurried on down to the lake as often as possible. The kids and I camped on the doorstep of the neighbors for a long stretch. Well, actually we kept inviting ourselves for coffee. Because they were such wonderful people and because (this gets really ugly, I know): they had a horizon.

Until one day I started looking at the Little Things. The tiny plants. The texture of bark. The mosses. The leaves. Really looking deeply. Appreciating what was there under my feet and all around in the forest. Wow! Details that had never before been noticed. Subtle gifts.

The forest came alive and suddenly, one of those days, I realized I was no longer desiring the horizon. Well, not as much anyway. There still is a little bit of horizon envy. It may never go away. Especially when the best sunset you can sometimes view is a reflection in a mud puddle in your driveway.

The lake! The horizon!

Pa Ingalls moved his family out to the prairie. They left the Big Woods and moved to a place where the horizon was all they could see. No more being surrounded with trees. They were on the big wide expanse of endless view.

Nope, not me. I’ve decided. I like this woods just fine. As long as there is a lake you can walk to a quarter mile away. There are Michigan mountains in this county, as well. You can climb ‘em and admire the horizon all you want. And some of my friends have farms. Fields stretch in all directions around their house. You can go and breathe deep and feel like you are an eagle, looking in all directions at once.

Sometimes we just need to adjust our view

My friend Melinda visited from California once in the middle of our green and leafy summer. She lives atop a mountain. She couldn’t get over the claustrophobic feeling of being surrounded by trees.

I understood what she meant.

Yet I have learned that sometimes the things we need to see next are given to us in life. I needed to open my eyes and look at the little details, the little things. Some people may need the wider view, to live atop a mountain or beside the sea. Sometimes what we want aren’t the same things we need.

Yep. That’s what I’ve learned from this challenging case of Horizon Envy.

Sure, buying stuff isn’t exactly good for the environment — all products take energy to make and ship and, thus, contribute to carbon emissions — but Black Friday is upon us, and we’ve decided to put together an Earth2Tech slant on the annual holiday gift guide. These gifts range from gadgets that are super energy-efficient or use clean power, to technology that can help you reduce your home energy consumption, to digital goods that you probably didn’t know were helping reduce carbon emissions. Here are 10 greentech gifts from the Earth2Tech crew:

1. The Energy Detective enabled by Google’s PowerMeter: Alas, the first wave of The Energy Detectives that connect to Google (s GOOG) home energy management tool PowerMeter sold out almost immediately, explained Google’s Ed Lu at the GreenBeat conference this week. That’s not surprising because Energy Inc., maker of The Energy Detective, was the first device partner for PowerMeter. But we’re hoping that The Energy Detective 5000 (PowerMeter-enabled) will be more available closer to the Xmas season. It costs around $200 (up to $300 with additional features), can be bought online here, and requires an electrician to install.

2. Remote-controlled Tesla Roadster: Because we all know we can’t afford the actual six-figure Tesla Roadster electric vehicle, or for many of us even the upcoming Model S, there’s this $60 alternative from TrendTimes (hat tip AutoblogGreen). Tesla tells Autoblog that it gave TrendTimes permission for this 15-inch remote-controlled version, and the toy includes a battery pack, charger and wireless remote. If you don’t want the remote-control version, check out the Hot Wheels and kiddie car models.

3. Medis Fuel Cell for Cell Phones, Emergency Kit: Medis Technologies is touting one of the world’s first fuel cells that can provide backup charging power, and the company offers a mobile charging kit ($25) and an emergency backup kit ($50). While it’s great that this technology is finally on the market, there are a few drawbacks to the mobile product: The mobile kit is highly disposable given that, at $20, the refills cost about the same as the kit itself, and it only offers 20 watt hours. I don’t think the technology is ready for prime time when it comes to regular cell phone charging, but the Emergency Kit is a fun idea for backup power for when you find yourself in a powerless jam. You can buy these products at Costco (s cost), Fry’s and Amazon (s amzn), but on another down note, both products seem to be getting poor reviews from customers on these e-commerce sites.

4. The Kindle: So the reason why you would buy one of Amazon’s (s AMZN) Kindles — the popular e-reader — probably isn’t because it’s good for the environment. But one Kindle on average can displace the buying of about 22.5 physical books per year, and thus deliver an estimated savings of 168 kg of CO2 per year, a study that came out this year from the Cleantech Group found. In contrast the U.S. book and magazine sectors accounted for the harvesting of 125 million trees in 2008, and an average book has a carbon footprint of 7.46 kilograms of CO2 over its lifetime. The Kindle costs $260, plus paying per e-book.

5. Gore’s “Our Choice”: Former Vice President and Kleiner Perkins partner Al Gore seems to show up more regularly on the greentech speaking circuit when he’s got a book out. Gore’s recently released “Our Choice: A Plan to Solve the Climate Crisis” looks at the technology solutions that can fight global warming. I haven’t read the book, but I’m guessing there will be a significant portion on the smart grid, given Gore’s speech this week. It costs between $15 and $25 depending on where you buy it and hardback vs. paperback. And if you haven’t already, check out Thomas Friedman’s “Hot, Flat and Crowded.”

6. Horizon’s H-racer 2.0: Horizon Fuel Cell technologies has been selling its educational kits demonstrating how fuel cells work for years. It’s a way for the company to make a little revenue while it tries to build its other businesses selling fuel cells for the transportation, aerospace and defense industries. This year Horizon has launched the second generation of its well-received H-racer fuel cell model car, called the H-racer 2.0. Only $119 and you can teach little Susie all about the magic of hydrogen.

7. Samsung Reclaim: I haven’t been the biggest proponent of “green cell phones,” but Samsung has been a leader in at least trying to break into this market. Launched in August, Reclaim is made with 80 percent recycled materials, with 40 percent of the outer casing produced with bioplastics from corn and lacking many of the toxic chemicals usually found in mobile phones. In addition, it’s got an energy-efficient charger. One of the interesting things about the Reclaim is that it has some decent features and functionalities, like high-speed 3G network access, a slider QWERTY keyboard, GPS and accompanying location-based services, and a one-click button for mobile web access to sites like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and YouTube. For about $50 and a 2-year Sprint (s s) contract, you can buy one at Sprint stores, as well as Best Buy.

8. GPS & Traffic-Avoiding Gear: While we’re all waiting for biofuels and electric cars to make a bigger dent in the world’s auto fleets, the next-best thing you can do is use a little information technology to cut down significantly on fuel. According to mapping company Navteq, real-time traffic GPS systems, which provide updated traffic conditions and navigation routes for drivers, can cut down on driving time by 18 percent and reduce carbon emissions by 21 percent compared with drivers without navigation systems. Navigon’s got some cool ones out this season that have spoken traffic updates.

9. ClearLite Safer CFL: While companies are working on pushing down the price of bulbs made from light-emitting diodes (LEDs), better-designed compact fluorescents are still needed. For anyone who’s screwed in one of the standard twisty CFLs, they can often break, provide low-quality light, and have a hard time dimming. ClearLite has tackled the problem with breaking and developed its ArmorLite Safety Eco CFL with a coating that catches broken glass and any of the tiny amount of mercury in CFLs. The bulb also looks like a traditional incandescent, so consumers will be naturally more comfortable with them. The bulb costs $8 and just became available this month.

10. Brammo Enertia Electric Motorcycle: If the high prices of electric scooters, motorcycles and cars have given you the holiday blues, Brammo has just dropped the price of its Enertia from $12,000 down to $8,000 (and down to $7,000 with a federal tax incentive). The all-electric motorcycle uses a lithium iron phosphate battery, has a 50-mile range, and can go max 60 miles per hour.

So, this photo is the first in a series I will be posting featuring people as subjects. I’m excited, as I usually do landscapes/macro/anything-but-people!

I took this photo while at the Jersey Shore over the summer with my boyfriend (see previous post for more another product of that trip). Avalon Beach was lovely, fairly empty with lovely water. I love to body surf, so I was quite content. Some areas had larger waves that surfers were taking full advantage of. I was lucky enough to snap this shot, right as the surfer hit the top of the wave. It wasn’t until I looked at the larger image of the photo on my computer that I realized he was also touching the top of the wave. Cool stuff.

So, anyhoo, this shot was taken with the Canon Powershot G7. Contrast was fixed with Adobe Photoshop CS3.

Surf’s up!!

Sunset in Northeast Scotland, at equinox due West; at solstice at NNW

EQUINOX is traditionally the season for getting back to the time-old occupation of watching sunset, full-moonrise and the autumn heavens. It is onset of the aurora season when for some inexplicable reason there is more geomagnetic actiivity (related to solar flares) and, it seems, the time for other celestial phenomena. These include nacreous clouds – those wonderful ephemeral patches of rainbow light which appear and as suddenly disappear around the edges of evening cirrus. There have been seen lately a lot of what in American terminology are called sun-pillars and sun-dogs (in the case of Venus, Venus-dogs!) where the pillar describes a shaft of light extending vertically from the light body and the dog a similar extension of light in a lateral direction. With the gradual brightening of Venus, the chance of seeing this phenomenon becomes more likely.

midwinter full moonrise in the north-north-east at latitude 57ºN

Sun-pillars are a regular feature of sunset around autumn equinox, even lingering as a great shining after the sun has set. With the continuation of our spell of ‘Indian summer’ and exceptional clarity of light, we aren’t surprised to find a phalanx of photographers most evenings at the well-known recumbent circles in the Northeast and some even at those lesser-known.

On equinox night, a magnificent solar ‘roll-down’ occurred, as seen from Shieldon (non-recumbent) circle at NJ 823 249 near Whiterashes, due west to the Buck of the Cabrach where a little before 7pm (BST) the flaming orb of an equinoctial sun did its primeval tumble down the northern slope, setting into a notch of the Cabrach (Alexander Thom eat your heart out!) and flooding the Garioch with an almost ethereal light. It is no wonder that FOGS who were considered ‘fringe’ 20 years ago are now being joined by a growing number of sky-watchers: all meeting by chance in the stone circles of Aberdeenshire, Kincardine and Banffshire to witness such autumnal glory.

We think the practice is catching on!

Crop Circle but not a Crop Circle

Hybrid stone/crop circle at winter solstice 2002

CIRCLE-watchers may have noticed a sudden straw bale sculpture appearing as if by the wave of a cosmic wand on the Garioch-dominating plateau at Kirkton of Bourtie, NJ 801 249. However, unlike the crop circle which appeared mid-morning on an August day in 1995 in a wheat crop on a Culsalmond farm, the circular structure at Bourtie is decidedly man-made. It is the inspiration of sculptor Keiji Nagahiro, combined with dowser Peter Donaldson and farmer Ian Peddie, who with broad grin from tractor cab manipulated bulky but beautiful round bales into position (no mean feat) while the ideas men looked on and directed the final shape in an attempt to replicate the circle’s original alignment. Its ultimate position – a recumbent circle in straw – is all things to all men – or at least to these three: to one it is a fleeting glimpse of what might have been, created in rustic splendour to last no more than a single season; to another, it was something fun to do after harvest but before the ‘back end’ dictates when everything is brought in; to the dowser it is a physical shape superimposed on an energy signal received by the dowsing rod. It has been a fascinating exercise in people-watching: on the day it was created – one week before equinox – two Californians strolled up the slope, utterly unsurprised by the manifestation. BBC Radio Scotland was quick to send a researcher who was transported by the site, its structure and its vista. Others have followed, often spotting the sculpture from the road and screeching to a halt, entranced. Our members have only a little time to see it in its present glory as the farming year and equinoctial gales (so far, amazingly absent) will soon dictate its being or non-being. We recommend it, if only for the presence it brings to this ancient place, in a way regenerating in the imagination how the circle must have looked to its early architects 5000 years ago. To FOGS who follow shadow casts (especially good at equinox), the bales add another dimension to shadow outlines in barley stubble while low sunlight highlights cropmarks of an avenue approaching the circle, peppered with quartz pebbles, a hallmark of NE circle design. The imagination soars.

Post scriptum on above article: Google Earth continues to display this sculptural-stroke-agricultural-energetic phenomenon: as the aerial photo used in their GoogleEarth page for Kirkton on Bourtie will show. This clearly dates GoogleEarth’s map coverage of Aberdeenshire to the autumn and winter of 2002.

Untimely death

IT IS with sadness that we have to announce the untimely death of Dr Nick Bogdan, one of the leaders of the Fetternear Episcopal Palaces Project this autumn. He will be greatly missed. At this time it is difficult to predict how the work in which he was involved will continue, but his partner and fellow archaeologist, Dr Penny Dransart has our blessing and condolences. We wish her well in continuing the work they both began and will report when future plans are further developed.

Druidsfield Saved

FOGS might be forgiven for thinking our efforts often go unseen or, more colloquially, that we spit in the wind; but occasionally, a success is eeked out through perseverence. Such is the case with the Druidsfield (known to Historic Scotland as Broomend of Crichie) ritual henge, avenue entrance and Pictish carved stone at Port Elphinstone, Inverurie NJ779 191-6. We added our voice to local opposition to a plan for development of a certain hamburger chain to adjoin the circle and ditch – visions of half-eaten buns and related waste floating in a prehistoric context made more than FOGS’ hair curl, it seems. Thanks in great part to Inverurie businessman Bob Minto and his supporters, the burger meisters will find another site and the Druidsfield will continue to provide pleasure for local walkers. It has been reported that this very field has been acquired by Aberdeenshire Council, for unknown purpose and for an undisclosed sum. Locals are again on the warpath. We shall confirm.

FOGS Dowsing Day & AGM

MIDWAY through a week of solid rain, FOGS’ AGM turned out to be one of brilliant sunshine with not a cloud in sight. Dowsers – new and experienced – were seen lurking, bending, pacing, doing all the bodily antics that dowsers do among remnant woodland near Midmar Kirk. Visitors were drawn from Dundee, Glasgow and Inverness, along with a full complement of regular FOGS who seemed to enjoy every minute. Results not all yet in, but preliminary consensus would have it that the Midmar Kirk recumbent circle may be a later progression, with its operative stones moved a few metres downslope from an original site focused on the Balblair monolith nearby. A visiting Dundee lecturer in architecture specializing for his Ph.D. in geomancy [yes] said he came because the grid between latitudes 56º and 58ºN are considered ‘most sacred and most proliferated with stone circles in the world’ (his quote) and he wanted to feel it for himself. We are grateful to Phyllis Goodall and Peter Donaldson for leading the dowsing and encouraging so many newbies. More meetings of the like were enthusiastically recommended. Printouts of the dowsed circle will no doubt appear in due course but, as our scientist-dowser is now our new membership sec, please give the man a chance! In the meantime, his consummate dowsing and mapping of recumbent stone circle and Bronze Age cemetery at Loanhead of Daviot is here.

FEBRUARY CANDLEMAS NEWSLETTER 2002 Vol.XIII-1
Return of the Light

IMBOLC (Christian Candlemas) brings new light, the rise of spring, bird nesting activity, anticipation of the warmth and fecundity to come.

While markers within Neolithic stone circles were probably well-known to the contemporary population, we sometimes forget that each stone had its solar as well as its lunar function. We sometimes forget to experience sunset at all.

Sunset at Easter Aquhorthies one mile West of Inverurie is always a revelation. At Imbolc it is defined by a clear shadow of the recumbent ‘window’ group falling on two stones to the north of the shimmering jasper stone at the modern entrance. As sunset approaches in early February, one is mesmerized by the advancing shadow as it creeps towards the two smaller circumference stones. Precisely at the moment of sunset, they align exactly and then both sun and shadow are extinguished.

The jasper stone alone, it seems, holds a memory of the light, continuing to twinkle and gleam until dusk. Its quality of reflecting light must indeed have been revered.

Other miracles of light seem to happen at this time, significant to much later civilizations. The Hill of Barra, NJ803 257, has no known stone circle, but was an enclosed ramparted settlement of the Iron Age which continued as a hilltop stronghold in the Pictish era. From its summit, accessible via the Bourtie-Meldrum Community Walk, at least five stone circles are visible, but most compelling is the uninterrupted view of Mither Tap of Bennachie. Around 5pm, weather permitting, for 10 nights in mid-February the sun and Mither Tap do a dance. For the week of Imbolc, Bennachie’s mass engulfs the sun, swallowing the orb low into Mither Tap. But midway through this time period, a change occurs and she agrees to spit the sun back out! On February 17th, the sun starts its sunset roll into Mither Tap, is received by the mother mountain at 5pm and reappears seven minutes later on her northern crag. This rebirth, even to time-worn eyes, is a surprise. Mother mountain has given birth to the sun! One dimly understands the joy of celebration, seasonal change. The sun is almost playful in this rite of passage, setting for the next week in more of a roll than an extinction, as each of the peaks in turn along her broad back appears to rise to swallow its fire. ©2002MCY

Ringing in Changing Seasons

A FEW weeks of unseasonably fine weather called for a FOGS-run experiment at Garioch stone circles in central Aberdeenshire.

There are many 18th and 19thCC references to ringing stones at Grampian circles – among them Easter Aquhorthies, Balquhain, the Standing Stones of Dyce and Arnhill, Tillytarmont. For good measure a small group of FOGS tried to produce effects at a number of circles. Results were especially good where surrounding stones remain complete, and gave an amphitheatre of sound. One person struck or played a musical instrument within the inner ‘sanctuary’ or preciinct enclosed by the recumbent stone and flankers, while listeners stood or walked to various points within the circle.

At Easter Aquhorthies and Loanhead of Daviot, the best point for receiving the sound was on a mound [E.A.] or stone platform [Loanhead] marginally to N of centre where string chords or even voice reduced to a whisper were quite audible. At Easter Aquhorthies there is a kind of ‘tuning fork stone’ projecting inwards from the centre of the massive recumbent; it may have been set strategically as a sounding board because the human voice carries remarkably well from this stone – its vibrations spreading out and reverberating not only through the circle amphitheatre, but also creating a secondary echo resonance.

The group repeated the exercise at Loanhead, where there is no such ‘sounding’ stone, but where the recumbent is split in two. Hands clapped between the two slabs resulted in echoes felt by participants throughout the inner circle. Again the group tried the voice experiment at Kirkton of Bourtie circle – a damaged monument with much stone clearance clutter, and while they could feel resonance, much of the effect seemed to disperse, with no amphitheatre to ‘capture’ the sound.

Ultra- and infra-sound experiments recently replicated by groups in south Britain and at New Grange in the Boyne valley in Ireland, including much sophisticated equiment, gave sonic waves graphically recorded’.

The effect on our FOGS observers, to say the least, was tantalizing and exciting enough to suggest yet another side to the rituals enacted by Neolithic celebrants to mark the changing seasons.

Charting the Nation
‘CHARTING the Nation’ is a three year collaborative digital imaging and cataloguing project, whose primary aim is to widen access via the web to historic maps of Scotland and associated archives dating from 1590 to 1740. It is led by two researchers at the University of Edinburgh, Charles Withers and Andrew Grout.

Bull carved stone, one of 30 originally surrounding Pictish Burghead

UMOs
HENRY Moore Institute Leeds is currently showing a rare glimpse of Unidentified Museum Objects on loan from the British Museum. They include the unique phallic Portsoy whetstone, a carved ball and a Burghead bull. Sadly the exhibition will not travel farther north and so any FOGS keen to see the rarities will have until the end of the month to visit the Henry Moore Institute, Headway, Leeds. For non-travellers, details on the British Museum website.

Roman discoveries at Birnie

Emperor Lucius Septimius Severus (AD192-211)

TWO surprise hoards of Roman coins have been found in an Iron Age context at Birnie, Moray. In last year’s excavation, curator of Iron Age and Roman
archaeology with the National Museums of Scotland Fraser Hunter was delighted when a pot of Roman denarii turned up in excavations at an Iron Age settlement outside Elgin. The pot was broken, but contained some 300 coins dating to the reign of emperor Severus, last to attempt conquest of Pictish Caledonia, nearly 1800 years ago. Early this year another clay pot was unearthed – this one entire and undamaged – only 10 yards away from the former hoard. Both are in NMS undergoing conservation and examination.

‘Spiritual’ Tourism

FOGS has added its voice to two national bodies attempting to moderate the state-dominated attitude to digging up the past. It is based on our members’ respect for sacred sites in our own area and on the premise that laser scan and sonic technology [archaeoptics and infrasound] can arguably be used to better effect than digging into and disturbing a sacred space with the possibility of loss of ‘finds’.

‘Spiritual’ tourism – one which takes account of people’s need to visit a site for its sacredness in an atmosphere conducive to contemplation – is supported by the Cruithni Charter, ASLaN (AncientSacred Landscape Network) and countryside organizations, including SNH, Friends of the Earth, Council for Rural England and others concerned for the historic landscape. As ever, our view puts emphasis on education, in order to prevent degradation or defacement.

On montait dans la chambre
les jours de tempête.
par la petite fenêtre
- lucarne sous le toit -
on regardait la mer
grise ou verte qui roulait
d’énormes vagues blanches.

On aurait dit un bateau
ou un phare cette place-là.
Et le vent les nuages
les mouettes qui passainet
dans le rectangle de l’été.

Mais il y avait le bruit surtout
du grand dehors
quand sous les draps
nos corps minuscules
cherchaient comme des poissons
à s’enfoncer très loin
vers cette région du monde
qu’une ligne délimite
et qui n’existe pas:
l’horizon.
